They even looked at each other once across a crowded bar
He was with Martha, she was with Tom
Neither of them really knew what was going on
Strange feeling of never
Heartbeats becoming synchronized
and staying that way forever

Most of the time it was just near misses
Air kisses, once at a bookstore, once at a party
She came in as he was leaving
And years ago at the movies, she sat behind him
A 6:30 showing of ‘While You Were Sleeping’
He never once looked around

Chorus:
It’s so easy from above
You can really see it all
People who belong together
Lost and sad and small
But there’s nothing to be done for them
It doesn’t work that way
Sure we all have soulmates but we walk past them every day, oh no

And it’s not like they were ever actually unhappy in the lives they lived
He married Martha, she married Tom
Just this vague notion that something was wrong
A naked absence, a phantom limb
An itch that could never be scratched

[Chorus]

Neither of them knew what was going on
A strange feeling of never
Heartbeats becoming synchronized
And staying that way forever

Who knows whether that’s how it should be
Maybe our ghosts live in that vacancy

Maybe that’s how books get written
Maybe that’s why songs get sung
Maybe we owe the unlucky ones

[Chorus]

Maybe that’s how books get written
Maybe that’s why songs get sung
Maybe we owe the unlucky ones

Afternoon, everyone. This May Day has been the nicest day of 2014 in NYC. Right now, I can hear whistles being blown outside my financial district office, but I don’t know if that’s a rally for May Day or not. During my lunch break, I walked past Zuccotti, but there were mainly the usual office workers eating lunch, and only 3-4 OWS types. The police presence is larger than normal, however, and there are barricades along Broadway.

This is just heartbreaking and shows the scourge of domestic violence.

Devoted mother is mourned after her death in a domestic violence shooting

A woman suddenly thrust into the role of raising her five orphaned grandchildren after their mother’s murder received an outpouring of gifts Wednesday from friends and family.

(snip)

“…she had grown into a doting mother who worked overtime at a bank’s call center to help provide for her children, ages 9, 7, 4, 3 and 1. She loved reading them Dr. Seuss books, helping with their homework and taking them to the zoo and water parks.

“Adoria Verser died Wednesday at age 29 after being removed from life support at a local hospital. Her family donated her organs.”

As an atheist, I think Dostoevsky got it exactly backwards. It’s not that without god, anything is permissible. It’s that with god, anything is permissible. Once you’re convinced that god is on your side so completely that you can do no wrong in his eyes, then of course planting car bombs and kidnapping schoolgirls (among other things) is fine.

Sarah Palin’s odious “waterboarding baptism” comments are a more diluted version of this, but it comes from the same place.

Well, if you’re going to be “saved” and “forgiven” for every single damn thing you do, why not do them?

Doesn’t that take the brakes off every thought and action?

Manufacturing picked up in April after consumer spending surged the prior month, showing the U.S. economy is poised to lift off in the second quarter.

The Institute for Supply Management’s factory index rose to 54.9, the strongest so far this year, from 53.7 in March, figures from the Tempe, Arizona, group showed today. Readings above 50 indicate expansion. Household purchases climbed in March by the most since August 2009, according to Commerce Department data.

Sales are increasing at automakers such as General Motors Co., while Whirlpool Corp. (WHR:US) is among those optimistic demand will pick up as the weather warms. The data bear out the view of Federal Reserve policy makers who yesterday looked beyond weak growth in the first quarter and projected the world’s largest economy would speed up.

“The economy is coming back very quickly,” said Robert Stein, deputy chief economist at First Trust Portfolios LP in Wheaton, Illinois, who accurately projected the gain in the ISM. “We’re seeing better data pretty much across the board.”

Oil sheen from derailed train stretches 9 miles down James River

washingtonpost.com

“Shiny crude oil residue from the derailed CSX train that lit the James River on fire Wednesday has stretched nine miles downstream, a Virginia environmental official said Thursday.

“CSX workers using two massive cranes continued cleaning up the derailed tanker cars from beside the river Thursday. They then planned to tackle the three cars that plunged into the water and set the river’s surface ablaze.

“A National Transportation Safety Board team is on site to investigate the cause of the derailment. The 105-car train originated in North Dakota’s Bakken shale region, a booming source of crude, according to CSX, and was headed to Yorktown, Va. There have been increasing concerns about the safety of trains transporting crude following recent high-profile crashes, including one that left 47 people dead in Quebec last summer and another in Casselton, N.D., in December.” More

Greenwald has a complicated relationship with WikiLeaks and Assange, whom he considers an ally, though given Assange’s controversial reputation in the United States, he admits that “Julian stepping forward and being the face of the story wasn’t great for Snowden.” But he credits Assange with having helped save Snowden from almost certain extradition to the U.S. Snowden, however, never wanted to go to Russia, which Assange acknowledges. “Snowden believed that in order to most effectively push for reform in the U.S., Latin America would be the better option,” Assange tells me. “He did not want to invite a political attack that he’d ‘defected.’”

Assange, however, disagrees. “While Venezuela and Ecuador could protect him in the short term, over the long term there could be a change in government. In Russia, he’s safe, he’s well-regarded, and that is not likely to change. That was my advice to Snowden, that he would be physically safest in Russia.

A Matter of Faith - Official Trailer

“…A Christian girl, Rachel Whitaker (Jordan Trovillion) goes off college for her freshman year and begins to be influenced by her popular Biology professor (Harry Anderson) who teaches that evolution is the answer to the origins of life.
When Rachel’s father, Stephen Whitaker (Jay Pickett) senses something changing with his daughter, he begins to examine the situation and what he discovers catches him completely off guard. Now very concerned about Rachel drifting away from her Christian faith, he tries to do something about it!”

If that’s actually the case, why does Assange continue to hide in the Ecuadorean Embassy in London?

Yeah. Evolution isn’t the answer to the origins of life. It’s the answer to how come life looks like it does now. Abiogenesis is an answer to the origins of life, though the answer is basically a shrug.

Lobotomy?

Speaking of lobotomies, let’s see what a famous speech would sound like, Palin-ized.

Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have A Dream” Speech Palin-ized:

“I have MS, oppressive heat is sweltering heat of injustice, even one day of sweltering conditions, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and equality, a dream. One day my four children, depending on their skin color, not character-rated with a dream to live in such a country.”

thedailybanter.com

The Real Thing:

“Thankfully our founders were wise enough to say we have this position and it’s constitutional — vice president will be able to be not only the position flexible, but it’s gonna be those other duties as assigned by the president. A simple thing.”

I think Original Palin wins this time, and probably every time.

Bandwagon, they jump on it. California legislators have a habit of legislating against events that have never ever happened.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A California lawmaker has introduced legislation designed to prevent sports owners from turning league fines into a business expense that can generate a tax break.

The legislation from Democratic Rep. Tony Cardenas follows the National Basketball Association’s $2.5 million fine and lifetime ban of Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling.

The congressman’s staff member say they’re not aware of any specific team owners who have used their fines to generate a business-related tax deduction, but Cardenas wants to remove that possibility entirely. Cardenas said fines are meant to be a punishment, not a business expense.

Cardenas says it’s unacceptable that “multi-millionaire owners get a tax break for egregious behavior.”

France’s Far-Right’s High Hopes On May Day Display

Decked out in red, white and blue clothing, and waving flags and banners, thousands of supporters of the far-right National Front party marched through central Paris on Thursday — known as May Day or International Workers Day — to hear charismatic leader Marine Le Pen. The traditional gathering began, as always, at a gilded statue of Joan of Arc, where Le Pen laid a wreath.

The National Front is in high spirits for its annual rally this year. In March, the party won the mayoral races in 11 cities across the country. It hopes to increase its influence by electing National Front candidates to the European Parliament on May 25.

The marchers chanted, “Non to Brussels, oui to la France,” expressing their disgust with the European Union. There were many young people in the crowd. Twenty-five-year-old Jean Baptiste Vondeville took a bus to the rally with a group from the northern city of Lille. He says this year there’s an electricity in the air.

Seattle update: May Day starts out peacefully, but threats have city on edge

May Day in Seattle got off to a peaceful start Thursday, but posters, spray-painted threats and even an effigy of a police officer set ablaze had the city on edge for possible violence that has occurred on this date the past two years.

“It’s time to break them before they break us,” proclaimed posters plastered across Capitol Hill Thursday morning.

At least one death threat aimed at Seattle Police officers was found spray painted on a utility box and Seattle Police tweeted a photo of a threat they said they had received which showed a effigy of an officer in flames.

Police also fund the words “Kill SPD” spray painted on a bank at 13th Avenue and E. Madison Street early Thursday. Other locations were tagged with similar spray paint Thursday.
