And Now the Creationism Movie, “A Matter of Faith”

Deliberate anti-science ignorance gets the Hollywood treatment

It takes a lot to make my jaw drop after all these eons of blogging, but the amazing thing about this new religious right film is that something so deliberately ignorant and anti-rational is actually being made in 2014.

In “A Matter of Faith,” a good Christian girl who was raised right by her creationist daddy goes off to college, and daddy’s worst fears come true — Rachel falls under the spell of a sinister egg-headed evolutionist professor!

But daddy isn’t gonna take this lying down, no sir. He challenges this atheist science-lover to a public debate, enlisting the aid of a courageous black teacher who quit rather than “teach evolutionary lies from those textbooks.” It’s a by-the-numbers Hollywood script, with mind-numbingly trite characters, written by religious fanatics.

Cue ridiculously over the top martial music as creationist daddy puts the Satan-worshipper in his place.

Here we see the good Christian girl on her first exposure to the evil lies of Charles Darwin, causing her perfectly made-up brow to furrow in unaccustomed thought. Thought she will soon come to repent.

Christian themed movies seem to be filled with a lot of anger against modern science, evolution, secularism, and liberals in academia. Basically anyone who questions the inerrancy of Biblical text or the assumption that we are a Christian nation.

These people aren’t so much spreading the joyous good word, as making socially and politically charged movies expressing their resentment that we are slightly more religiously diverse than ever before.

And see, this is what makes me mad. If Christians would do less judging and more actual preaching, then maybe people would have a better opinion of them.

One does have to have faith to continue to take this stuff seriously, and by faith I mean blind faith. Pretty much anyone who understands science and the first amendment understands why “creation science” isn’t even allowed to be taught in our universities. It has nothing to do with being against Christianity or any other religion.

Also how many times do we have to tell these people that there are devout Christians out there that accept the scientific fact of evolution.

Doing communities on the Internet is hard, but it’s nice to see places work to combat that. I know we have a great one here thanks to Charles and my fellow Lizards. Hopefully the folks over at Comic Books Resources will be able to rebuild to the same:

To be clear: this is about more than just this one thread. While there are many examples of good conversation among great members on our old forums, hateful and ugly comments were allowed to be posted in the interest of “free speech,” which made the forums a place that wasn’t accepting or inviting. I’m ashamed to say, I didn’t take enough notice of what was happening.

That failure falls on me. And I apologize.

The funniest part of all this is that you don’t even need to use evolution to dismantle Creationism. Physics can manage it just fine.

Neil DeGrasse Tyson obliterated YEC with the simple observation that if the universe was as young as Creationists say it is, we couldn’t see any light past the Crab Nebula. Just the fact that we can observe stars and galaxies from much farther away proves these people wrong. The rest is details.

Dragons are proof of creation, dragons can breathe fire. How did they evolve the ability to breathe fire without getting burned? And they wouldn’t have developed the ability to not get burned without being able to breathe fire first. It’s irreducible complexity in action!

Therefore: The existence of Dragons is proof of creation.

Creationists have a hand-waving explanation for that: the speed of light has not been constant during the life of the universe. They have a similar argument for radioactive dating: decay rates have changed over time. How? God did it. Why? … Next question?

To be a bit pedantic, that is not a proof.

An omnipotent deity could create a universe that is young but merely looks old.

Of course, that level of unreasonable skepticism doesn’t help the creationists very much, since an old-looking universe created 5 minutes ago is just as plausible as an old-looking universe created in 4004 BC.

Ultimately, YEC is based on taking the Bible (interpreted in stupid ways) to be infallible evidence, while systematically disregarding all other evidence and reasoning. Those who do this knowingly are basically liars.

USAF receives first CONECT-upgraded B-52 bomber

The US Air Force (USAF) has received into service the first of 76 B-52H Stratofortress bombers to go through the Combat Network Communications Technology (CONECT) digital data suite upgrade.

The aircraft was accepted during a ceremony at Barksdale Air Force Base (AFB), Louisiana, on 25 April after having gone through the nine-month upgrade at the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Complex located at Tinker AFB.

Designed to give the crew of the B-52 a modern digital communications suite to tie in with USAF command-and-control centres, ground forces, and other network-enabled platforms, the CONECT upgrade has been likened to taking the legacy bomber from a rotary-dial phone to a smartphone in terms of its connectivity capabilities.

CONECT enhancements include the ability to re-task the B-52 mid-flight, rather than having to land and change the mission profile cartridges if the target changes. ‘J-Series’ messages can now be shared with mission commanders via satellite, and the system also allows for limited direct air-to-ground digital communication through nine-line ‘K-Series’ messaging.

The initial phase beginning introduces fines or jail terms for offences including indecent behaviour, failure to attend Friday prayers, and out-of-wedlock pregnancies.

There were no known events to mark Thursday’s implementation.

A second phase covering crimes such as theft and robbery is to start later this year, involving more stringent penalties such as severing of limbs and flogging.

Late next year, punishments such as death by stoning for offences including sodomy and adultery will be introduced.

2 high-speed train sets built for Wisconsin set to leave Milwaukee

At the same time, Doyle successfully secured $810 million in federal stimulus money for the new Madison to Milwaukee train line, which Talgo hoped to manufacture trains for as well.

Walker argued that the high-speed rail project would cost state taxpayers over the long term in rejecting the federal money after he was elected. Supporters maintain it would have created hundreds of jobs and given the region’s economy a boost.

The State of Wisconsin spent $52 million on the two trains before Walker and the Republican administration canceled a maintenance contract, disputed costs and halted payments, leading Talgo to terminate its contract and keep the trains.

Talgo is suing the state in Dane County Circuit Court for clear title to the trains and the money the state already has paid the firm.

It also has a claim against the state for $65.9 million, which the state Claims Board was expected to discuss Wednesday in a closed session. A decision will be made within 20 days.

Both the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and the state attorney general’s office declined to comment on the lawsuits.

Well, yes. Also on a pedantic note, the Judeo-Christian God is presented as omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent. This gives Him the ability to hear every prayer of every parent with a dying child. Unfortunately, especially before advances in medical science, He almost always said “NO.”

Which made Him, pretty much, the Biggest Asshole in the Universe. And in most of the world today, He hasn’t changed his tune.

I asked a very fundamental co-worker of mine (who was always asking me to “Come to my church sometime, you’ll enjoy it”, so I felt I was within my rights), “Simply explain the story of Job to me, how a man that was very upright, who believed in God and did all he could to please him could be used as a token in a game between God and the Devil? How he could be tortured with worse and worse disasters, ending in the death of his family simply as a bet with the Devil.” How can a loving God do that? I can appreciate the story of Job as how there are things that you don’t control, that all will work out in the end, (Always look on the bright side of Life…), but if read literally you can’t help but think of the SAW franchise of movies, and God saying “Let’s play a game…”

Because God.

More seriously, Creationists belong to a group of people that distrust “secular” universities, continuing a tradition dating back to the 11th century at least. For them, universities that encourage free thought are the Enemy, because they are well aware that appropriate education weakens blind faith and obedience to church authority. Their hero, in this case, is a courageous father who stands up to the Enemy and beats it down with his ironclad arguments for Biblical Creation.

A perhaps unwitting subtext is that no sensible Creationist would send his child to such a den of inequity in the first place, and would instead require her to attend a Bible-based college or university.

As for the idea that she’s 19 and an adult, you have not been paying attention to the Religious Right. In their minds, since she’s a girl, she is under the protection/authority of her father until she gets married. Then it’s her husband’s turn. Some extremists don’t even allow their girls to attend college, lest their marriageabiity be sullied by close proximity to boys and books and stuff.

Hollywood is full of beautiful/handsome people trying to make it big in Showbiz. Looks are usually not enough, though. Unless they are sleeping their way to the top (as it were), actual acting talent is required.

Didn’t end well….

when i actually got around to reading the entire bible, as an adult, i was astounded at how different it is from the Every Child’s Golden Book idea of it that we absorb from western culture

if you look at it purely from the point of view of literature, it has an impressive verisimilitude concerning human nature since just about every character struggles with the evil and good inextricably bound together within them without ever reaching any clear resolution - in a way the model of a first class 20th century realist novel. so many of them are so shockingly bad!

as for job, it is certainly not true that he has this famous patience that he is proverbial for. he bitches to god and mocks the friends who pester him with well meaning advice. finally god gets sick of his complaining and subjects him to sarcastic put downs: “so where were you when i laid the foundations of the earth?”. the book itself belongs to the ‘worldly urban sophisticate philosophical meditations” part of the bible, utterly different in tone from any other part, and, again, seeming very like mid 20th century thinkers…

Well, with wind chill. That Giant Lance in January of ‘83 was just brutal. SAC changed the rules after that because we put so many ratings in the hospital for contact frostbite burns.

They wouldn’t close the flight line until it was 50 below. One day we were out trying to work on one of the planes and it was just too cold. The heater wouldn’t even start. We went back in the truck and our sergeant radioed Control and complained about the temp. A few minutes later we heard “it’s 47 degrees below zero. You have 3 degrees.” You should have heard all the other trucks out there immediately complaining on the radio. Our sight said “Fuck them” and proceeded to pull a gallon of Thunderbird out from under his chair. He drove around the flight line passing the cheap wine around for 20 minutes until the gave in and closed it.

The fundamentalist mind seems wedded to a strictly patriarchal form of society. It’s hard to say whether the religion in question creates the patriarchy, or whether religion is used to justify an existing patriarchy. Regardless of the cause-effect relationship, patriarchy among Christians have God/Jesus as male at the top, with fathers, husbands, and other male relatives, and preachers/priests as representatives of God/Jesus on earth. Women and girls are seen as helpless and utterly dependent on the men in their lives.

How they deal with figures like Ruth and Esther is another question.

I wonder about the cause-effect relationship because in rural China, traditional patriarchy remains firmly in place despite the communist revolution. Here it’s a question of which came first: the Confucian principle of filial piety or patriarchal society. I know many of my female students here are swimming upstream when they decide to attend college and especially to delay marriage to their late 20’s.

I can demolish it using nothing but the book of Genesis.

Chapter 1 is a creation narrative, that starts with nothing and goes through until people.

Chapter 2 loops back again to the beginning and is another creation narrative, starting with nothing and going up until people.

But stuff happens in a different order. And using different methods. Genesis starts out, right from the word go, with two mutually exclusive, incompatible creation narratives.

That’s your big honking neon sign that the reader is not intended to take either story as a literal, factual recounting, the big clue that you’re meant to look deeper for the “real” meaning.

Metaphor is not a modern invention.

I re-read (listened) to the Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck yesterday.

First, it is so worth rereading. Just because.

Years ago, on my first reading, I noted that the protagonist neutralized his meddlesome relatives by providing opium for them. I thought it was an interesting way to solve the problem.

This time I noted this part:

“When the rich are too rich there are ways, and when the poor are too poor there are ways” (Buck 119). The man goes on to say: “When the rich are too rich there is a way, and if I am not mistaken, that will come soon.” He nodded and pointed with the stem of his pipe to the wall behind them. “Have you seen the inside of that wall?” (119-120). In having this man say this, Buck is foreshadowing a rebellion, a revolt against the “rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer” ways of the “old” China.

I linked to the article, The Politics of China During The Good Earth because I think it is not just a truth about that part of world history.

Seems we may be/are at that point ourselves.

re: #333 Jocko’s Rocket Ship

I mean this city just just raised the minimum wage to $15. In Oklahoma there are no protests today and they are trying to outlaw the minimum wage. Where are the protests there?

Not really,. The mayor says he’s struck a deal to phase in in increase to $15 / hr over a span of between 3 and 7 years depending on the size of the business in question. So if you’re working for a small employer you’re not going to see much of an increase for quite a while and even companies with 500 or more employees will have to wait 3 years to see the full $15.

The reason a lot of people in Seattle are pissed off is that in the neighboring city of SeaTac workers for large employers have been getting $15 / hr since the beginning of the year. There’s a feeling that large employers make a lot of profit and the cost of living in Seattle has grown at very high rates in recent years. Equivalent housing for instance costs 68% more in Seattle than it does in Oklahoma City, everything else costs more too.

There’s also the feeling that this is a prosperous city for a lot of lucrative businesses and wealthy individuals who can and should pay more to the service level workers who keep the place running. A ton of companies either started up there or moved to the PNW because that’s where a lot of tech talent wants to live. Much of the reason people want to live there is because of the often over-educated workforce and progressive social environment. So there’s a strong sentiment that the largest business especially shouldn’t be given a break in period at all, that they’ve benefited too long from services they should be paying much more for.

Also, anybody who’s worked for smaller employers knows that they’re often the most abusive. There may be a legitimate need to cut them some slack and phase in their compliance, but there will always be pressure on them to match wages with larger companies to avoid turnover and disruption. Making large employers comply immediately means smaller employers will have to become more competitive, or at the very least start treating their employees like actual people who have rights, and options.

It’s too late. The ERA legislation has been declared dead by the Supreme Court. The original legislation had a “ratify by” date inserted, and it’s long past. An extension time period was tacked on, but no additional ratifications came in during that time. The situation ended up in court because Idaho officially rescinded it’s ratification, and the courts had to figure out if that was legal or not, lower court ruled it was. In the end the Supremes ruled the issue moot because the required 3/5ths of the States never ratified it, neither at one time or in total.

If it’s going to be resurrected it’ll have to go through the entire process again. There’s no way any SC will rule the deadline clauses invalid, since they were cited in 24 of the ratifications. Making those ratifications explicitly conditional.

I got a similar response from a mathematician, who says he based his belief on the fact that the events described in the New Testament fulfilled the Old Testament prophecies to such an extent that the odds of it being purely chance were astronomical.

Unless, I pointed out, the NT tweaked some of the facts to make them fit.

I’m getting a strong whiff of nostalgia for the “good old days” of the Soviet Union these days. We may be dealing with Putin for quite some time.

I wondered for a long time why the USSR was simply allowed to fall apart and descend into chaos in 1991. Now it becomes clear. After a decade or so of chaos, the people were hungry for a strong, authoritarian leader who came along bare-chested on horseback and promised them order and a degree of stability, predictability and the appearance of law and order.

I’m beginning to think the Kiev govt has lost control of Ukraine, unfortunately until they step up military operations. The West has entered unsettled territory in our dealings with Russia at this point.

Ukraine’s defence ministry calls for release of pilot who was shot down by pro-Russia separatists in south east Ukraine - @ITVNews
read more on itv.com

Pro-Russian separatists seize control center for Donetsk railways, practically stopping all train movement in eastern Ukraine - @Reuters

I was always afraid something like this was going to happen, given Ukraine’s past w/Russia and the old Soviet Union. Sanctions against Russia by the West don’t seem to be having much effect, and Russian propaganda and the propensity of Russian-oriented eastern Ukrainians, on seeing how easily Crimea was taken over, to embrace Russian involvement even if at this point it’s provocateurs and a ready army at the border is very unsettling.

373 Fairly Sure I'm Still Obdicut  May 2, 2014 3:44:40am

This is the part that a lot of anti-evolutionist whackos don’t get, actually: Not only did Darwin’s observations and subsequent work by other people show that evolution had happened, the discovery of genes and how they work to recombine in both sexual and asexual reproduction showed the mechanics of evolution.

Not only do the anti-evolutionary ignoramuses have to explain the diversity of species and their adaptations that evolution explains so well, they also have to explain our genes and their mechanism of recombination, which very obviously is something that allows mutations to occur in a population and then carry on to new generations.

re: #372 EdDantes

I mean the modern synthesis; that’s it’s general scientific name. But yeah, that Darwin was able to observe evolution without knowing about genetics is a big coup for him. We obviously would have discovered evolution eventually, once we discovered genetics, but that he got to it ahead of time is really amazingly impressive.

The modern synthesis is the combination of Darwin’s theory of evolution with the discovery of the work and function of genes; Darwin didn’t know, and didn’t claim to know, the mechanism of action by which evolution occurred.

For the haters from the rightwing who proclaim their religion constantly, and those pushing these propagandistic “faith” vehicles like this awful movie, I have a reminder for them.

1 Corinthians 13:13

And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

The entirety of 1 Corinithians, Chapter 13:

1If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. [Listen up, those who preach about their “faith”!] 2If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surrender my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing.

4Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, 5does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, 6does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 7bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

8Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away. 9For we know in part and we prophesy in part; 10but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away. 11When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things. 12For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known. 13But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.

Grow up, “christians”.

I would never survive as one of those “christians” with the bullhorns we are witnessing in politics today.

re: #382 EdDantes

I believe that some bacteria are resistant to antibiotics otherwise they would be dead. Those who are resistant survive and evolve into…

You’re stating it somewhat weirdly, maybe because you don’t really understand evolution—you seem to be coming at it from a Lamarkian point of view. The drug-resistant bacteria don’t ‘evolve’; the population containing them evolves, since you’re applying a selective pressure on them through the drugs. So, you can predict, and show, evolution:

Start with wildtype (broadly genetically distributed) bacteria.

Apply drug A at high levels.

Most will die, only the drug-A resistant will remain.

Increase or decrease the Ph level of the solution.

Most will die, only those capable of living in that ph solution will remain.

Increase or decrease the oxygenation of the solution.

Most will die, only those capable of living in that oxygenation will remain.

Compare that bacteria to the original. The new bacteria will be drug-resistant, capable of living in a different ph and oxygen level than your original.

How do “ring species” advance the cause of evolution? Some populations can interbreed some can’t.

And why is that?

Yes, I believe in genes. Mendel was a genius.

So what is the output of the mechanism of action of genes?

Yes. The fossil record is a demonstration of evolution: it shows species changing over time in adaptation to their environment.

What is your explanation for the evolution of species demonstrated by the fossil record, such as:

Cambrian explosion. Any ideas on that? Just asking.

You’re citing a Victorian-era criticism of evolution—one made by Darwin himself.

I think you’re working on an older idea of what the Cambrian Explosion was; recent research into the fossil record shows a much smoother rate of change than was originally thought.

There was a high level of change, and that’s consistent with a number of things, like a high level of environmental change—like a change in oxygenation, Ph levels, or average temperature, all things that would cause most species to have to adapt rapidly, and rapid adaption means rapid speciation.

Another explanation is that the significant mutations to the Hox genes has already occurred, putting the Cambrian creatures in a position to experience more diverse evolution than previously. For you to understand this, you’re going to have to understand what Hox genes are.

Finally, there appears to have been a mass exctinction event around the same time period, which means there were tons of ecological niches available for exploitation, another thing that can cause rapid evolution, as genes that would not be selected for when established competition abounds can be when there is no direct competition. Commensurate with that may have been an ‘arms race’ between the species attempting to occupy those niches: rapid evolution in direct competition with non-established populations.

Oh, you mean ‘speciation’, not ‘evolution’. Like many people arguing against evolution, you don’t actually understand the terms you’re using.

Okay, here’s speciation:

De Vries, in 1905, found that one of his O. lamarckiana had mutated, and the new mutation had a different chromosomal number than the original and yet was fertile and stable. This new species was O. gigas.

Nereis acuminata was used in toxicology tests over a period of 20 years. At the end of these tests, the resulting populations were cross-bred. One of the species was reproductively isolated, and not capable of interbreeding with the other species—this is speciation.

Here’s a paper, by the way, showing the improvement in our understanding of the precambrian fossil record.
pnas.org

Now, after a half-century of discoveries, life’s history looks strikingly different—an immense early fossil record, unknown and assumed unknowable, has been uncovered to reveal an evolutionary progression dominated by microbes that stretches seven times farther into the geologic past than previously was known. This essay is an abbreviated history of how and by whom the known antiquity of life has been steadily extended, and of lessons learned in this still ongoing hunt for life’s beginnings.

You also asked me for evidence of speciation, which I gave, to which you’ve been unable to respond.

You confused speciation with evolution.

You are ignorant of modern developments in understanding of the precambrian era; you are using an anti-evolution argument that is woefully out of date.

You’re unable to explain how genetic reproduction could not cause evolution: given genes and mutation, and reproductive incompatibility, evolution is something that could be predicted without any access to the fossil record.

You have been unable to explain how the fossil record of the horse does not show the evolution of the hoof.

You have been unable to explain how evolved drug resistance in bacteria does not show evolution, because you don’t understand what the term means and confuse it with speciation.

But yeah, I’m sure people are going to believe I’m scientifically ignorant.

I don’t have the data to support it at hand, but I’m pretty sure resistance to the idea of evolution is driven by religious or other cultural beliefs and fanaticisms, rather than ignorance.

For example, the Japanese accept evolution widely—but they don’t accept human evolution as widely as other countries that accept evolution widely. The Japanese also have a cultural myth of being significantly different from other human populations.

I’d agree, but there are also those who do know, who have looked at the fossil record, who are aware of microevolution, and still reject evolution. The ability to know and acknowledge the facts and yet say that there’s a ‘larger truth’ is something you get a lot.

For a trivial example, the belief in the ‘trinity’ of God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit being at once separate entities and the same thing. This isn’t actually something that makes any logical sense, it’s an impossibility, and yet it’s a tenant of faith in many religions. If you asked those people if 1=3, they’d say no, but if you pointed out the trinity asserts that, they’d say that god can do anything.

So there’s a belief in a god to whom facts don’t matter, as it were, as well as the ignorance. Both are problems. There’s a distinct difference between religions that say “Deal with the facts” and those that say “Facts can be overruled by metaphysics”.

I’d say that’s a separate arena from the evolution question, as that’s dealing with as issue of theology that focuses on something that can’t be observed or subjected to scientific method, really - the logic problem I grant. But really, if you posit an omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent deity, you can illogic a lot of stuff away.

The question of evolution is, as you say, a thornier issue, because these (otherwise very intelligent) folk have seen the record, the scientific discourse, etc., and have chosen to reject it based on … whatever (blind faith, larger truths, biblical texts, hand-waving, etc.).

Those people choose to reject the evidence laid out before them because this book instructs them to, and they have come to believe (whether through being raised that way or through some other mental process) that loyalty to the book is more important than anything else, including reality.

And this is why we get so much violence in the name of religion. Because at its core, the highly religious mind is a mind that is capable of prioritizing loyalty to the book above all else, up to and including outright rejection of reality.

Greets and saluts from the bright and sunny NYC metro area. The BLS released their monthly statistics, and here’s a sample news report, which shows the rate dropping to 6.3% from 6.7%. It’s better than what analysts had expected, and earlier months were likewise revised upwards.

The labor market roared ahead in April as milder weather helped employers add 288,000 jobs — the most in more than two years.

The unemployment rate fell to 6.3% from 6.7% — the lowest since September 2008, the Labor Department said Friday.

Economists surveyed by Action Economics estimated that 210,000 jobs were added last month.

Businesses added 273,000 jobs, led by strong gains in professional and business services, retail and restaurants, and construction. Federal, state and local governments added 15,000.

Job gains for February and March were revised up by a total 36,000. February’s increase was revised to 222,000 from 197,000 and March’s to 203,000 from 192,000.

Strong job growth is a good thing, but not what the GOP wants people to think.

Here’s the BLS figures for unemployment using different measures. U-3 is the official rate (using the seasonally adjusted figures). U-6 is the one that GOPers will latch on to.

They have a limited point here. The U-6 is always higher than the official rate, but over the past few years, the U-6 rate has diverged from the official rate by a greater margin than in the past. In past years, the U-6 was about 4 points higher than the U-3 official rate. It’s now closer to 6 points higher.

The problem for the GOP is that they don’t offer up anything that would actually reduce the unemployment rate for those who have been marginalized by the job market.

And I’m betting that that “statistic” is based on those who are being paid the US minimum wage, which is lower than or equal to the state rates in 19 states. There are a number of states that have just increased their minimum wages, or are phasing in new increases to the minimum wage as well.

The latest outrageous outrage - Obama wasn’t in the room as Benghazi was underway.

Ummm…. and this matters why/how? A president could simply request others monitor the situation and let him know when they have actionable information, and to let him know what can actually be done.

Time differences and all (Benghazi is 6 hours ahead of DC).

And the one fact that is indisputable is that the DoD had nothing that could respond and save the Ambassador from being killed. Any rescue was hours away.

Oh, another uncomfortable fact? The GOP refused to fund the State Department request for additional security, and the sequester cut across the board, including diplomatic security.

True. But it does require effort to find, read, and think through.

Too much to ask of for many. I don’t know if it’s laziness as much as a comfort thing.

Interesting comment. It also holds true for The Bible.

I was by earlier when Ed was being…well Ed. Had to leave and scope out some other sites.

You know what always perplexes me regarding Christian types having trouble with science and especially evolution? I went through the Catholic Baltimore Catechism days…learning all the rote answers to the questions asked. And I always had a problem with the fact they would make us recite we were all made by God and in his image.

So, science was created by God. Man was created by God. Through science man tries to figure out how things work by using his brain and looking at all that stuff God made. I’m thinking all of that is created by God too, right?

So God created Charles Darwin and Darwin’s brain and Darwin created Evolution. Therefore God created evolution through the workings of Darwin.

Where the heck is the disconnect with religions and science? I should think denying science is denying God to the deeply religious.

We were given brains for a reason. Maybe some people are too lazy to want to use them and learn all the cool stuff the creator of all created.

Outside that…it is Friday. Thank God!

: )

Where the heck is the disconnect with religions and science? I should think denying science is denying God to the deeply religious.

I’ve always seen the religious fight against evolution as the hardcore faithful realizing the jig is up. Evolution pretty much blows the Garden of Eden out of the water, which IMO is one of the most popular go-to stories in the Bible.

If the ultimate Issue #1 origin story isn’t true, then the rest collapses like a house of cards. God; Noah; Moses; Jesus; the wicked-ass grand finale that features all the weird monsters; there either not real or greatly exaggerated tales of something that may have happened millennia ago.

Thus, the desperate attempt to put the truth genie back in the bottle. I mean, that’s what the movie featured in the OP is all about. It’s the religious cinematic version of Kevin Bacon from Animal House running around screaming, “Remain calm! All is well!”

More economic data released today.

Factory orders up. Durable goods revised up.

The Commerce Department said on Friday new orders for manufactured goods increased 1.1 percent. February’s orders were revised to show a 1.5 percent rise instead of the previously reported 1.6 percent gain.

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast new orders received by factories advancing 1.4 percent in March.

Orders excluding the volatile transportation category rose 0.6 percent after advancing 0.7 percent in February.

Manufacturing is pushing higher after a lull in the winter, but a surge in inventories in the second half of 2013 remains an obstacle to achieving a faster pace of factory activity.

A report on Thursday showed a gauge of national factory activity rose in April for a third month. The Commerce Department report showed inventories increased only 0.1 percent in March, slowing from February’s 0.7 percent increase.

Maths is hard, and a deeper dive into Rick Perry’s Toyota comments shows just how idiotic and wasteful Perry was with limited state resources.

Toyota was going to move to Texas regardless after weighing the options. They had wanted to consolidate their corporate HQ, and the combination of factors weighed heavily towards Plano. The $40 million Toyota got wasn’t the deciding factor (but what company isn’t going to look that kind of money and refuse to take it).

So, instead of creating new organic jobs above and beyond those already existing nationally, Perry spent $40 million to shift 3,000 jobs from California to Texas that Toyota was going to move anyways.

And you know why the rate is still as high as it is, and the economy hasn’t recovered even faster? Government jobs haven’t recovered as much as private sector - a feature, not a bug, of the GOP efforts to shrink/destroy government, even the parts they’re willing to nominally tolerate.

What I don’t understand about their ideology is this desire to dramatically reduce the size of government which obviously would create a lot of unemployed people in an instant. If you did what they wanted to do, you’d have even more unemployment and underemployment. But then again this is the same ideology that opposes things like welfare and food stamps all the while opposing the raising the minimum wage. See also how government’s size is so out of control but we can’t touch the defense budget. I’ve come to realize that conservatives just don’t understand economic realities. They live in a world of platitudes and sound bites.

Since I am a VW nut, I always wanted to take the complete front wheel drive assembly of a either a VW or Audi V6 and move it into the back of a Rabbit/Golf hatchback and keep it as stock looking as possible. Dropped a bit with some good coil-overs, bigger brakes and some nice tires and wheels.

A two-seater, mid-engine hatchback seems completely reasonable to me.

I have been around some guys that have done some pretty creative stuff with VWs. I know a guy that was putting a complete Audi TT all-wheel drive package in a Jetta. It all fits with some fairly easy mods in the underpan. The beauty of VW parts is so many are made to fit in all their cars.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Congress’ multiple investigations of the deadly 2012 attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, have cost the Pentagon millions of dollars and thousands of hours of personnel time, according to the department.

In a March 11 letter, the Pentagon outlined its cooperation with six investigations of the Sept. 11 assault that killed four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens, and its response to repetitive requests for information from about 50 congressional hearings, briefings and interviews.

But in Japan, fans of the original film aren’t exactly thrilled with the look of the new Godzilla. In fact, some fans are down-right annoyed with how fat the monster appears in the American trailer. “When I finally saw it, I was a bit taken aback,” Godzilla fan Fumihiko super-fan Abe told the AFP at a Tokyo exhibition of paintings of the monster. “It’s fat from the neck downwards and massive at the bottom.”

Isn’t being without insignia a violation of the Geneva Convention, thereby leaving that Russian soldier liable to summary execution?

Or am I thinking in mufti?

I think we’ll need a lawyer for this one. I’ve read over the relevant parts of the Geneva Conventions: if you consider Russia a “party to the conflict”, then yes, they’d be covered under the GC as armed forces allegiant to the government. However, if you don’t, there could be a problem as they don’t have a fixed distinctive sign, and/or you consider what they’re doing espionage or sabotage.

Anyways, you’re supposed to err on the side of giving them GC rights and would probably need a tribunal to decide unless this situation is cut and dried historically.

Vox Misleads On Keystone XL In GE-Sponsored Video

While the voiceover states that building the pipeline would “create thousands of temporary construction jobs,” the number on the screen shows 42,000 temporary jobs, suggesting that all 42,000 jobs will be in construction. But the State Department report actually projects only 3,900 temporary construction jobs if construction took one year or 1,950 jobs if construction took two years. The 42,000 figure includes tens of thousands of indirect jobs in everything from food service to finance that the State Department estimates will be supported by Keystone XL’s construction. The State Department estimates an outcome of only 35 permanent jobs would result from construction of the pipeline.

The video also repeats the State Department’s claim that the Keystone XL won’t greatly impact climate change because “most of the oil would just get shipped by rail anyway,” offering only that “green groups are disputing that analysis” as a rebuttal. But it’s not just green groups — reports from Reuters (largely ignored by the media) have found that the State Department’s projections on rail transport were way off, undermining the Department’s climate change claims.

Yeah, but doing that would just make Bundy a martyr and further embolden the nutjobs.

Think about all the hysteria that the RWNJs have been whipping up since 2008 about Obama taking their guns, the government stocking up on ammo, white genocide, and Real Muricans being rounded up and sent to the gulags. Now have POTUS order the National Guard or the Army to take out the militias at Bundy Ranch. What do you think would happen?

If anything happens here, it has to be done locally or by the state of Nevada. If the feds do it, the RWNJs will flip their shit even more and it could get even more dangerous out there.
