A great victory for tolerance and diversity has been achieved

How Condoleezza Rice’s Rutgers commencement appearance fell apart in 88 days

“I am honored to have served my country. I have defended America’s belief in free speech and the exchange of ideas. These values are essential to the health of our democracy. But that is not what is at issue here,” she said. “As a professor for thirty years at Stanford University and as (its) former provost and chief academic officer, I understand and embrace the purpose of the commencement ceremony and I am simply unwilling to detract from it in any way.”

Rice wished good luck to the Rutgers graduates.

Journalists shouldn’t be hosting such. They shouldn’t be socializing with politicians outside the office period. And the WH Correspondents Association (or whatever the formal name is) is utterly useless bunch of prima donnas preening because of their vaunted seats in the press room, which used to be a swimming pool (and is really tiny, at that).

re: #65 sattv4u2

Any journalist married to a politician should be reassigned to another beat nowhere near politics (I’m looking at you Andrea Mitchell).

Any politician married to a journalist should recuse him/herself from any legislation related to media, and should refuse coverage from his/her spouse.

For that matter, any self-respecting journalist who marries a politician should probably find another line of work, like P.R.

As for the politician/lobbyist thing, I have nothing to say about that. Most lobbyists could be scourged from K Street and I wouldn’t shed a single tear.

My opinion is that a SC Justice, being one of only nine, has a hell of a lot more influence on the laws of this country than a politician who may only be one of 100 or 500+.

Of course, you might think that a SC Justice, having a lifetime appointment and not having to scramble for money would have higher standards of propriety.

Apparently not, though.

As is normal, it’s an article that is tangentially related to the topic at hand, mostly due to the phrase “conflict of interest.”

Although I agree that the effect lawmakers can have on companies that they may own stock in is one that should be addressed, it is a somewhat different one than the topic under discussion which primarily related to spousal conflict of interest.

(And, for the record, the bill under discussion a) died in committee and b) seems consistent with her overall positions.)

I do wonder if in decades to come there will be a WHCA. I can easily imagine a future where a new President decides to open up press interviews to online sources only.

The current WHCA president mentioned he worked for McClatchy. They have had to fight off rumors of being bought. So many old time news organizations are already gone, and many that are left still have not secured a good business model in the new digital world.

Okay, totally different subject before I call it a night. I was just checking to see if there was some setting that would let me change the default thumbnail size when searching with Google Images and I found this in the settings:

Um… NO.

The link goes to this page. NO, Google, I don’t want you to give me “private” results based on what you consider “relevant information” from my other Google products, nor do I want you to help me with any other damned thing, I just want you to return search results.

Yeah, I’m gonna worry about the NSA looking at my phone call meta data when Google & every other private company’s marketing department is up in my business all day every day. How many of those little “member” discount cards do you carry around? You know, the ones for the drug store, the grocery store, the pet supplies place, etc? Credit cards? Debit card? Library card? Those people know every damned intimate detail of your life, all they way down to how much toilet paper you use every month. Gah!

Joel McHale is made for scripted TV like his show Community. He’s not a very good stand up comic at all. His delivery isn’t warm enough for live shows, IMO. It’s like going to see Bill Maher live. Apparently there have been complaints from certain quarters about the BBC paying too much to on-air personalities. The BBC is looking to downsize their payroll, lowering salaries for the top presenters. To reach that end they are trying to push some of the older and more highly paid presenters out the door, the replacements for whom will be younger and get smaller salaries.

Oobleck

Oobleck is a non-Newtonian fluid that behaves unlike other fluids. Flowing freely, it behaves as a regular liquid, but when a force is applied, it is more like a solid. If you pick oobleck up with your hands, it will easily flow through your fingers. If you squeeze or punch it, it will resist and feel like a solid. In large enough quantities, you can even walk on it! Oobleck can also dance to music, when spread out onto a sheet pan or plastic wrap and placed over a subwoofer. The pressure from the sound waves causes it to thicken as it moves.

For this experiment, you will need:

It’ll mostly be in Dublin; we’ll see what I find in the way of bus tours or whatever.

Also, Waterford. MUST GET TO WATERFORD.

On the black and white thing, I’ve posted this shot of OF before:

Old Faithful in B&W.

Here’s the same shot in color.

[Embedded image]I much prefer the B&W.

I reconverted the color to b&w, because flat imagery makes me sad. Also cropped it to get rid of the distracting fence rail, and made it square because it really wants to be square.

re: #227 goddamnedfrank

If you have pretty much any version of Photoshop made in the last decade there’s a really good easy to remember method for b&w conversion that gives you decent control over tonal relationships.

First make two hue / saturation adjustment layers.

On the top adjustment layer bring the saturation down to zero.

Play with the hue slider on the bottom adjustment layer. You’ll see the various parts of your black and white conversion change in relation to one another depending on the corresponding color hues in the original image. This essentially duplicates the use of traditional color filters on the camera without having to alter exposure.

The nice thing about this method vs. more sophisticated tools like the channel mixer or selective color layers is that it’s very quick and intuitive, you don’t have to think about the colors, you just stop the slider where you think the best overall image is.

I’ve had to go into Charlotte 2 days, Fri and Sun. I noticed far more motorcycles, “crotch rockets”, mopeds and bicycles on the road there who have to share the road. Although there are bicycle lanes in many places, the mopeds and other motorized 2 wheelers share the same lanes as autos, of course and Charlotte is one of those “sprawling” metros. I was mainly on the eastside of Charlotte, but most cars seemed to be 5 yrs old or older; saw very few really late model, or new vehicles. I don’t think these days too many people can afford both a house and car payment, and used cars are in demand. They are around here, also.

I think the economy over the past dozen years has managed to establish a very large lower working class of people who struggle to keep up and aren’t being helped by those “titans of capitalism” who seek only to increase their own coffers. Used goods are also in demand; the thrift stores are always crowded. The lower working class are renting apts or buying used mobile homes in lots tucked within the city limits (skirting middle class suburban enclaves), actually cheaper than renting in many cases. You can buy one of those that are covered under City regs for less than $10K, and pay a tiny lot rent of about $300/mo. I know this because my ex-DIL just did it, paying $4K for a 2BR, 1-1/2 bath. Her total pmt is around $600 for both the lot rent and trailer (and that will be paid off in about 4 yrs).

I’d rather rent and let someone else take care of repairs and the landscaping, and now just look for collectibles. Sat I scored 4 Johnson Bros fruit dishes that are probably 50-60 yrs old (pattern was from 1954 to 1965) and they’re in excellent shape. $2 for the lot. Like everything else, this venerable old English company was bought by Wedgewood in 1966 and now all of what’s left of its brand is made in China now—1,000 jobs were lost in Stoke.

Nope. Putin needs Odessa and Ukraine is going to have to learn to live without it. Ukraine can’t win and it’s very doubtful we are going to go to war with Russia over this. Puntin can have Odessa and then he’ll move on Transnistria. Not much we can do about it.

The US may still have the largest share of the world’s wealth (even though people like us don’t get it), but that doesn’t mean that we’re the policemen of the world, either.

I think Europe and NATO have a bigger stake in what’s going on than the US, and they would be the obvious defenders of Ukraine. The US can help with “boots on the ground” only as a part of NATO, not an individual country. Otherwise, we can send Ukraine equipment and supplies, as much as we wish.

I really don’t see how Ukraine could function as a democracy at all while its leaders, like Yanuk, were taking direction from Russia and enriching themselves at the same time. A veil of fascism remains over Ukraine at the moment, which would take years and a number of reforms to make democracy a real feature of the country. “Democratic” elections don’t ensure that; they’re just elections and can always be manipulated by those who want to maintain power, as we’re seeing in country after country.

Yup. The weird thing is most of the properties Putin is absorbing into his tax union are pretty shitty economies on their own. I don’t understand the economics of it but I assume the Russians have some plan to make this all work out for them. Maybe the plan is just as simple as milking these shitty economies dry, enriching Moscow while leaving them to rot.

re: #290 wheat-doggha — oo bird outside my window

Sounds like the 18th century Stamp Act and similar tariffs. Tax the colonies to enrich the crown, as it were.

This totally has nothing to do with anything, but the Stamp Act is actually fascinatingly convoluted. Basically, the UK kept a big standing army, but Parliament didn’t like having it in the UK in case a Napoleon type situation occurred or a crisis between the monarchy and the parliament. So most of the troops were garrisoned throughout the empire. The US didn’t actually need as many troops as it had to defend against American Indians, the British campaigns probably just inflamed problems and most actual indian attacks were beaten back by Colonial forces. This is complicated by Britain and France using the US as a proxy battlefield, but it was mostly Britain as the aggressor.

The Stamp Act was part of a series of taxes to get the Americans to pay for these troops, even though they were mostly just part of the political favor system in Britain; it was a good place to stick lower sons of the nobility and for middle-class guys looking to get ahead to get some service time. So it didn’t really wind up enriching the crown, but it enriched the people selling commissions.

The Americans didn’t like this shit first because of economic reasons, it was a big admin cost as well as the direct cost of the ‘stamp’, and most of the British manufacturers didn’t like it because it lowered their exports to the colonies and raised overhead for those that had invested in stuff in America. It later became important as an actual ‘constitutional’ issue for the Americans.

The Stamp Act was basically something that benefitted a certain narrow class (the officer class) and was opposed by a lot of other British interests. It got repealed in 1766, but the power to enact such taxes didn’t get repealed, so the Americans who had agitated against it weren’t satisfied by just repeal.

re: #295 Fairly Sure I’m Still Obdicut

—snip—

The Stamp Act was part of a series of taxes to get the Americans to pay for these troops, even though they were mostly just part of the political favor system in Britain; it was a good place to stick lower sons of the nobility and for middle-class guys looking to get ahead to get some service time.

I’ve learned recently that it is common in China for government officials to buy commissions in the PLA. This entitles them to wear a middle rank officer’s uniform, and I presume, to gain some additional economic benefits. When my friend told me he had just bought himself a colonel-ship in the PLA, I thought he was joking. He wasn’t.

A nation that uses its military to gain social status has serious social problems.

Yeah, I’m a victim of watching Meet The Press again. However, I’m kind of glad I did watch today. They have Will I. Am as part of their round table panel today, and I have to give it to him. He is doing a good job and is making more sense with his questions to the panel than Jason Chaffetz is with the answers. He asked about health care and why that is even an issue and Chaffettz went and mentioned Obamacare.

Immediately Anita Dunn, Fmr. White House Communications Director jumped in and said that she understands Will I. Am’s question and how Chaffetz’s answer goes to Will I. Am’s frustration as a younger communicator with politics. She rightly pointed out that Will I. Am’s question was about Washington doing something through politics, but Chaffetz’s answer was just pure party politics and that is what it has done what Will I. Am called the younger peoples frustration and turn-off and disconnect.

Good stuff. I wonder if the larger point made in that exchange got through Chaffetz? Probably not.

And Will I. Am just closed the show with a nice comment about last evenings White House Correspondents dinner. He said there were politicians and a lot of “Celebriticians”…and Gregory cut the show with everyone chuckling.

I think Will I. Am has a good political future, should he go down that road. He impressed me and I am glad he is active in his community and working to help inner city kids turn it around.

Why do I get the feeling what you are really concerned with is how bad this could all possibly look for President Obama and how you hope it affects Hillary come 2016?

Add in the Kerry outrage from last week and it looks like that is the real motivation.

Rising Russian Intelligence Activity in Hungary

He also has an excellent and reasonable post on Benghazi
Ground Truth About Benghazi

The White House today finds itself in an awkward place of its own creation. What could have been a brief, manageable scandal has now become an extended one that may dog the administration for the rest of its second term, while trashing Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential ambitions to boot. Mainstream media outlets are no longer burying the story, and the White House ought not expect a pass anymore, particularly as reporters generally sympathetic to the administration are calling it out for its dishonesty over Benghazi. For this, the White House, again, has nobody to blame but themselves.

I hope the American public learns the truth about what happened at Benghazi, why, and what came in its aftermath, both in Libya and in Washington, DC. There are more than academic questions at play here. Truth and justice, by no means always the same thing in our nation’s capital, deserve an audience. I especially hope that the coming investigation avoids excessive partisanship of the sort so many Americans, including this one, feel is corroding our entire political system, but I’m not overly optimistic on that point, given the recent track record of both parties. I’ll settle for knowing what really happened to Chris Stevens, Sean Smith, Glen Doherty, and Tyrone Woods - and why.

Yeltsin Opposes Expansion Of NATO in Eastern Europe
By ROGER COHEN,
Published: October 2, 1993

President Boris N. Yeltsin, apparently under pressure from his armed forces, has sent a letter to President Clinton opposing any expansion of NATO to include East European nations like Poland or the Czech Republic, Western diplomats said today.

Sent after President Yeltsin dissolved Parliament on Sept. 21 and embarked on a collision course with members opposed to his reforms, the letter amounts to sharp retreat from the position the Russian leader outlined during a visit to Warsaw in August. At the time he expressed understanding of Poland’s desire to join NATO and said it did not threaten Russian interests.

“Yeltsin calls it an elaboration of his position, but I’d describe it as furious backpedaling,” one diplomat who has seen a copy of the letter said. Clinton Undecided

NATO officials said that while debate on the issue of expanding the NATO alliance had been intense in Washington in the last month, President Clinton had not made up his mind on the question.

And now…off to stripping a bunch of old white oak woodwork pulled from my hallway. Got a lot to strip and it is beautiful, but has been through the inner city slum-landlord years. It’s too bad too, since it is all quarter-sawn and has the most interesting striping running through it. I figure, even if it has it’s gouges and scrapes and holes, all cleaned up, sanded and stained with a nice clear gloss varnish it is still going to look great.

When I get it done. This part is so, well…gooey, smelly and just sucks. Yuck. Luckily it is only a combination of what appears to be shellac with a coat or two of varnish on top of that.
