President Obama will only be 55 when he leaves office.

Assuming he gets the best healthcare, he could be quite nimble for another 20 years.

I wonder what the hate-right will do when he starts to show up here and there, and gathers large crowds, and once unencumbered by the formalities of the office actually speaks what he thinks?

There’s some serious SciFi plots laying in here:

Young blood reverses effects of aging in mice

Can an infusion of young blood reverse the loss of physical and mental ability in old age?

In a group of studies published Sunday in the journals Science and Nature Medicine, researchers say old mice who were infused with the blood of spry younger mice showed clear improvements in memory, sensory function, strength and endurance.

Researchers say a specific protein, found in the blood of mice and humans, appears to be at the root of this rejuvenation. They say they hope to test the protein’s effect on humans in clinical trials in the next few years.

[…]

It was more than 10 years ago that researchers began to realize that if they surgically conjoined an old mouse and a young mouse — so that the pair shared the same blood — the old mice experienced improved stem cell function.

A great observation - the charity and political fund raising he does post presidency might go unparalleled for quite a while.

“The President’s stand-up comedy is improving, and he wasn’t bad to start with.”

He’s got more than enough material to work with, given the knuckle-dragging mouth breathers that make up his opposition.

I think the president really does enjoy these events. He has a certain devilish tone in that little laugh of his. Nice stabs at the three political network…Fox, MSNBC and CNN.

I imagine the two Fox “potted plants” probably didn’t find it amusing. If anyone watches Fox’n’Friends tomorrow. Let us know how they deal with the butthurt. I can already hear them…”The President is wasting time scoring petty little smack-downs on us Fox reporters while Putin takes over the world and BENGHAZI grows into an international crisis never seen in the vaults of history!”

The current US social conservative worldview is all about them doing thumbs up/thumbs down on whether you deserved the violence administered to you. They mystically can discern what people deserve to suffer and die. The Bible might be used as justification, but they ignore all the bits about mercy and empathy and forgiveness…unless it’s one of their own up for condemnation.

The punishment is administered, so a suitable crime must have been committed.

My mother has been wanting a photo of her three grandcats together, which can be tricky. This photo isn’t spectacular in that sense - indoor shooting without a flash is tricky - but it’ll work as a 4x6, so she’s happy.

Also, it requires all three together close enough to get a photo for long enough for me to get the camera.

48 CuriousLurker  May 4, 2014 2:07:55pm

Okay, how about this: I was wondering about the surname of the ex-NYPD cop mentioned upthread in anticipation of the usual suspects trying to link him to Muslims in some way (even though the article I’m about to link to says he was known to have mental health issues).

Turns out his family is from Indonesia, which is the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country, however none of his family members have Muslim first names and I don’t know squat about the origins Indonesian surnames.

Anyway, Googling Setiawan led me to a Wiki page about Sitiawan, which is a province in Malaysia whose name means “loyal friend” in Malay. That’s where it gets interesting, IMO—the folklore behind the name:

Sitiawan: History

Folklore mentions Sitiawan as Kampung Sungai Gajah Mati. It became a thriving settlement for industrious migrants from Foochow (Chinese: Fuzhou). They were mostly from the district of Kutien in Fuzhou, China.

According to legend, Kampung Sungai Gajah Mati (literally: “Dead Elephant River Village”) was the place where two large elephants drowned after one of them, overladen with tin ore, got stuck in the mud of the Dinding River at low tide. Efforts to save the elephant were in vain and eventually, everyone gave up and left. However, the second elephant refused to budge and hung on to its friend, resulting in them drowning together in the rising tide. Thus the setia kawan (loyal friend) name was derived.

In the late 19th century, tin, together with rubber sheets, formed the main commodities of commerce. They were often carried by elephants and loaded onto waiting steamships destined for Penang. In the 1870s, when an outbreak of smallpox struck the settlement, and in line with the Chinese belief of naming a place to enhance its feng-shui, the locals chose to name the locality Setia Kawan—the “loyal friend” — to harmonise with nature and appease the dead elephants. The name eventually became shortened to Sitiawan. […]

en.wikipedia.org

So yeah, I went looking for an Indonesian surname related to current events and rapidly ended up ended up mired in Malaysian folklore about elephants. Gotta love the intertubes—I still don’t know squat about the ex-cop’s religious background (he could’ve been a convert, or so Geller is probably hoping), but that quick Sunday wikiwalk was interesting.

Oh, and if asked for the name of my hometown I’d much rather say “Loyal Friend” than “Dead Elephant River Village”. LOL

All the liturgical churches do something similar. Though the recent “new” translation of the Roman liturgy went back to more literal language that the Episcopalians used to use “and with thy your spirit”.

I used to see a fellow at the state capitol get the reporters to all pay attention with “the lord be with you” because most of them were either Episcopalian, Lutheran or RC and they’d all reflexively answer, laugh & then settle down.
