If you’re going to complain about the artist’s work, I’d say it’s because it’s highly derivative and lacks any new interpretation. It’s not bringing any new views about the subject. It treats the subject like a haigiography, rather than reveals anything new.

Shepard Fairey’s art, which also relied on stock photos/images, at least presented a different interpretation and repackaged the image with a message that the subject hoped to convey.

Quick question: What do people mean when they say Jews are Khazars? I mean I’ve heard about the Turkic Khazar people before, but I don’t get why Jews would be associated with them or why it would be used as an insult, which it clearly seems to be. Wikipedia says:

Beginning in the 8th century, Khazar royalty and notable segments of the aristocracy converted to Judaism; the populace appears to have been multi-confessional—a mosaic of pagan, Tengrist, Jewish, Christian and Muslim worshippers—and polyethnic. A modern theory, that the core of Ashkenazi Jewry emerged from a hypothetical Khazarian Jewish diaspora, is now viewed with scepticism by most scholars, but occasionally supported by others. This Khazarian hypothesis is sometimes associated with antisemitism and anti-Zionism. […]

It’s from a oped, citing a financial industry report.

By 2020, about 90 percent of American workers who now receive health insurance through their employers will be shifted to government exchanges created by the health law, according to a projection by S&P Capital IQ, a research firm serving the financial industry.

It’s not an outlandish notion. Ezekiel Emanuel, an architect of the Affordable Care Act, has long predicted a similar shift.

But the scope and speed of the shift is surprising. So is the amount of money that companies could save. The S&P researchers tried to estimate what it would save the biggest American companies. Their answer: $700 billion between 2016 and 2025, or about 4 percent of the total value of those companies. The total could reach $3.25 trillion for all companies with more than 50 employees.

They assume those savings will accrue to companies’ bottom lines, though there are also compelling reasons to think that some of those savings would end up in the pockets of American workers in the form of higher wages or other benefits.

The idea is this: Now that federal and state exchanges exist where anyone, even those with pre-existing illnesses, can gain coverage, employers might decide to give their workers a stipend to pay for health insurance on the exchanges rather than sponsor a plan themselves.

In truth, the American system of health care — in which most people get their private health insurance through their employer — has always been rather odd. Why should quitting a job also mean you have to get a new health insurance plan? Why should your boss get to decide what options you have and negotiate the cost of them? Employers don’t get to select our auto insurance or mortgage company, so why should health insurance be any different?

Trump sees all this as a bad thing, and the GOP thinks this as well, even though the pre-ACA system sucked if you didn’t have insurance, or you ran into lifetime caps, annual caps, or any other similar issues.

My biggest concern with a shift away from employer-based insurance would be that the employers would pocket the difference, and the employee doesn’t see any of the benefit (increasing the costs still more to the employee) since insurance is a benefit to the employee that is part of compensation. If you stop paying that, and don’t replace it with other compensation, you’re giving the employee a pay cut.

I think, and don’t quote me on this, it is used to make the claim that modern Ashkenazi Jews are not related to Levantine Jews of antiquity at all, and therefore have no “claim” on Palestine and the creation of Israel is illegitimate.

Or something. It’s probably more complicated than that but it seems to me like a way of saying they are “fake jews” and “zionism is bad” in one swoop.

There is an old legend that, about 1000 years ago, the pagan King of Khazaria and his courtiers converted to Judaism after interviewing a Rabbi, a Priest and an Imam for Official Religion of Khazaria. According to the legend, the Rabbi was awarded the job. There is little historic or ethnographic evidence for this legend. However it has been seized upon as “proof” that all modern, Ashkenazic Jews are descendants of “Khazarians” and therefore NOT TEH TRUE BIBLICAL JUICE FROM TEH BIBLE!!!!!.

Even this conspiracy theory excludes Sephardic Jews from being “Khazarian” imposters, but there is more DNA similarity between Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jews than between Ashkenazi Jews and Ungaro-Turkic people.

Of course there have been converts to Judaism throughout history, from all races and ethnic groups, but not entire regions or nations, since Jews have always been less aggressive in seeking converts than Christians and Muslims.

I do not recommend Googling “Khazar” since you are likely to bring up a bunch of anti-Semitic conspiracy sites, but many years ago, back in Usenet days, there was a serious Jewish history group that discussed the Khazarian theory from a geneology viewpoint. jewishgen.org

Yeah, numbers are hard. I remember one evening talking to a Houston police officer (I worked for the county and we shared national and Texas crime data with the local police, they picked up a tape or two every night).

They had just gone through negotiations on contract. They agreed to a 5% cut in pay and a freeze for 2 years, they would then get a 5% raise after the 2 year freeze. I asked him when they were going to get him back to what he was making before the 5% cut. He said it would be after the 5% raise in 2 years. I told him no, 5% of a larger number is larger than 5% of a smaller number. They take 5% from what you are making now and then give you 5% of that lesser number in 2 years, you will still not be where you are now. Then sent him off with his tapes to ponder the situation.
