And Now, the GOP Will Deny the National Climate Assessment

The National Climate Assessment is sobering reading — and even more sobering when you realize the entire Republican Party will reject it out of hand, and fight tooth and nail to prevent us from doing anything about it.

On the bright side, the website is very nicely designed.

Putin is doing what American conservatives adore. Yet, his actions against free speech and free expression are exactly what they accuse Obama of doing, and what he does not in actuality do.

So, if Obama really did throw conservatives in FEMA camps, shut down their websites and arrest preachers in their churches, would the RWNJ fringe then suddenly adore Obama?

I think not.

Ex-Twitter Employees Freaking Out Because They Can’t Sell Their Stock

Former Twitter engineer Sara Haider, Chad Woodford, Twitter’s former product and business counsel, Mischa Nachtigal, who used to work on media and content partnerships, former engineering manager Mark McBride, and others appear to have chimed in on a private Facebook thread about the mismanaged lockup period. I’ve reached out to Haider and others on the thread to confirm that their statements haven’t been doctored.

I also asked Twitter to verify the details and whether the issues have been resolved. An anonymous reader in Kinja, who directed us to the Facebook thread said “basically no employees have been able to sell,” except executives. According to the thread, a Schwab representative said Twitter placed a hold on exercising options and Schwab did not expect the hold to be lifted until this afternoon.

Looking at the Constitution, one can’t help but notice that it lacks any mention of “posse comitatus”, and the Founding Father actually wrote the Constitution to allow stronger Federal control of the government.

Federal judge halts John Doe probe into Walker recall

In his 26-page decision, U.S. District Judge Rudolph Randa in Milwaukee told prosecutors to immediately stop the long-running, five-county probe into possible illegal coordination between Walker’s campaign, the Wisconsin Club for Growth and a host of others during the 2011 and 2012 recall elections.

“The (Wisconsin Club for Growth and its treasurer) have found a way to circumvent campaign finance laws, and that circumvention should not and cannot be condemned or restricted. Instead, it should be recognized as promoting political speech, an activity that is ‘ingrained in our culture,’” Randa wrote, quoting from a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision.

He ordered an immediate halt to the investigation, the return of all property seized during it, and the destruction of any information and materials gained in the investigation. He told the Wisconsin Club for Growth it did not need to cooperate with prosecutors in any way.

The first John Doe resulted in 6 felony convictions among Walker’s inner circle mind you.

The private equity model is very different. A private equity adviser typically uses client funds to obtain a controlling interest in a non-publicly traded company. With this control and the relative paucity of disclosure required of privately held companies, a private equity adviser is faced with temptations and conflicts with which most other advisers do not contend. For example, the private equity adviser can instruct a portfolio company it controls to hire the adviser, or an affiliate, or a preferred third party, to provide certain services and to set the terms of the engagement, including the price to be paid for the services … or to instruct the company to pay certain of the adviser’s bills or to reimburse the adviser for certain expenses incurred in managing its investment in the company … or to instruct the company to add to its payroll all of the adviser’s employees who manage the investment.

We have seen that these temptations and conflicts are real and significant.

Also:

First, the Private Equity Growth Capital Council (“PEGCC”) itself has identified the number one myth about private equity as the myth that private equity only benefits wealthy investors.[6] “Mom and pop” are much more invested in these funds than people realize. PEGCC states it best: “Private equity investment provides financial security for millions of Americans from all walks of life. The biggest investors in private equity include public and private pension funds, endowments and foundations, which account for 64% of all investment in private equity in 2012.” To the extent private equity advisers are engaged in improper conduct, it adversely affects the retirement savings of teachers, firemen, police officers, and other workers across the U.S.

re: #47 wheat-doggha — oo bird outside my window

Apparently, it is OK to circumvent laws in Wisconsin, giving that fair state a new growth industry: graft, corruption and political machinery.

It’s not like that at all. Here’s the core of the decision:

Prosecutors contend that the Wisconsin Club for Growth is acting as a subcommittee of Walker’s campaign — and thus must report its spending on behalf of Walker and adhere to fundraising limits, Randa wrote. He called that viewpoint “simply wrong.”

When it comes to political speech, Randa wrote, the government may regulate only “express advocacy” — that is, ads or other communications that explicitly urge people to vote for or against a candidate. But Wisconsin Club for Growth and groups like it engage in “issue advocacy” — communications that promote or denigrate candidates without coming right out and saying how people should vote.

The government can regulate express advocacy only because of the danger of “giving government an expanded role in uprooting all forms of perceived corruption which may result in corruption of the First Amendment itself,” Randa wrote.

“As other histories tell us, attempts to purify the public square lead to places like the Guillotine and the Gulag.”

Campaign finance laws can be used to prevent tit-for-tat corruption or the appearance of it, but nothing else, Randa wrote. The activities at issue in the investigation don’t rise to that level, he found.

“O’Keefe and the Club obviously agree with Governor Walker’s policies, but coordinated ads in favor of those policies carry no risk of corruption because the Club’s interests are already aligned with Walker and other conservative politicians,” Randa wrote. “Such ads are meant to educate the electorate, not curry favor with corruptible candidates.”

I agree with Judge Randa’s decision. I also think the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel put out a very well-written and informative article.

But there aren’t that many Muslims in Ukraine, outside of Crimea at least. Yes, the ROC has far too much power; it’s gone back to the days of old, when the ROC was essentially part and parcel of the Tsarist government; church and state were one.

And that’s not good. I’m a firm believer in separation of church and state (or mosque and state, synagogue and state, etc.)

The Curious Case of Milwaukee’s Suburban Voters

“The most polarized part of a polarized state in a polarized nation” — that’s how Craig Gilbert of The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel describes the Milwaukee metropolitan area in the masterful first article of a four-part series on the region’s politics. The region is just as polarized as Mr. Gilbert suggests.

Milwaukee is not the only metropolitan area divided between a heavily Democratic, nonwhite urban core and overwhelmingly white suburbs. But the Milwaukee suburbs are still unusual. They haven’t moved at all toward the left, unlike other Republican-leaning Northern suburbs.

It’s that last part that bothers me. It seems reasonable to know from where a candidate receives his financial support. True, the WCfG is not making contributions to Walker’s campaign directly, but funds spent on advertising are funds that Walker’s campaign organization would not need to spend itself. It seems a clever way to evade already weak campaign finance laws.

It’s OK if that bothers you, and perhaps a law can be written to mandate disclosure while otherwise staying within the bounds set by Citizens United. But what the judge was saying was that under current law what the WCfG did was not illegal and so the investigation into the group must be halted.

Walker said that under his leadership as governor, more people in Wisconsin “have access to health care.”

He can take some of the credit, given that everyone living under the federal poverty line is now eligible for Medicaid.

But far more people are getting access to health care, whether from the government or private carriers, as a result of Obamacare.

Yet, Tillis has rammed through some of the most anti-progressive, anti-worker legislation in years after the Assembly turned majority R. He just cleans up nicely but is a real Babbitt character.

It’s OK if that bothers you, and perhaps a law can be written to mandate disclosure while otherwise staying within the bounds set by Citizens United. But what the judge was saying was that under current law what the WCfG did was not illegal and so the investigation into the group must be halted.

Well, I got problems with the Citizens United ruling, too, but I doubt this Congress (or any, realistically speaking) will do much about it. But I get your point. It would be left to some enterprising journalists or citizens to do any investigations, I suppose.

Here, in five steps, is a summation of the LSE report’s road map: (London School of Economics)

1. A “drug-free world” is not plausible.

In the opening chapter, written by Collins, the economist argues that believing we’ll live in a world free from drugs one day is not only deluded, it’s counterproductive. Collins blames prohibitionist forces in 1961 for perpetuating this fantasy—which he says still exists. In a seemingly heroic attempt to make this fantasy come true, he argues, we’ve assumed that the illicit market can be tamed through enforcement. “A global system which predominantly encourages policies that transfer the costs of prohibition onto poorer producer and transit countries, as the current system does, is an ineffective and unsustainable way to control drugs in the long term.” Collins argues for the decriminalization of drugs, which he calls a “far more effective tool.”

7 Reasons North Carolina’s ‘Establishment GOP’ Candidate Is More Extreme Than You Think

Exactly. This guy is the proverbial wolf in sheep’s clothing if you’re not paying attention, and many in NC do not.

Like I said, he “cleans up nicely” but only if you remain a sheeple. Some people have the wrong-headed idea that a “respectable” and superficial appearance means those people are “better” than they are—an idea planted firmly in the south too long ago, as our “betters”, no doubt brought here by the many English land grant owners, who copied the “lord of the manor” model in establishing slave plantations. After all, they wouldn’t be where they are if they weren’t, amirite? The idea that former poor white sharecroppers’ (the American equivalent that came closest to serfdom) descendants would wind up calling themselves “rebels” and fly the confederate flag, even today, was always mystifying to me. That mindset is the same one that resists unionization as well, even as they moved from that to mill work and other industries in the last century.

Ex-Twitter Employees Freaking Out Because They Can’t Sell Their Stock

Yeah, it was apparently a glitch with the administrator’s computer system. Sure. Right. Only affected everyone other than the key top executives.

No wonder the company’s stock price has fallen off a cliff.

But here’s the thing. The complaint is not that they’re growing, or that revenues aren’t increasing. They are.

It’s just that they’re not growing as fast as say Facebook revenues. In the chase for revenues, the stock’s being hammered because it’s not doing it fast enough.

Twitter might be a buy opportunity in coming weeks if the stock continues to be hammered to the downside. That is, if the company can figure out how to avoid the outages that continue to plague it.

The Tea Party may have lost the battle, but they’ve won the war in shifting the GOP to the far right. There’s more extremists seeking office, and winning those offices in GOP strongholds than ever.

Heck, for all the talk about Boehner trying to placate the establishment GOP, he’s run the GOP to the hard right, allowing the GOP shutdown last year, and his caucus has done everything imaginable to thwart the operation of government.

The investigation in to Benghazi is another symptom of this extremism. I’m figuring that Pelosi and the Democrats may well boycott the whole thing, knowing that it’ll be a sham investigation looking at nothing but trying to score talking points for use in 2016 or to set up impeachment talk. If any Democrats sit on that panel, it’ll give Boehner and the GOP extremists the ability to claim that the panel and whatever it concludes the veneer of bipartisanship, when the reality is that it’s a witch hunt to find fault where there isn’t, and ignoring the facts and information already known to all involved (well, to all who care to know about facts and evidence, that is).

Greenwald has a book coming out, and in it he claims the NSA and GCHQ are both looking at ways to monitor communications on board airplanes while in flight.

“Specific aircraft can be tracked approximately every 2 minutes whilst in flight.”

GCHQ’s airplane surveillance program is called Thieving Magpie. The NSA’s version is called Homing Pigeon.

Greenwald, whose book is due out May 13, got the documents from Edward Snowden, the former NSA contractor turned whistleblower now living in asylum in Russia. The Daily News obtained a copy of Greenwald’s book in advance of its release.

The ongoing NSA revelations stemming from Snowden’s leaks spurred an international debate about the balance between national security and privacy, strained relations with U.S. allies and forced President Obama to announce reforms to some of the agency’s tactics.

In other words, it’s quite possible the lack of stories from The Intercept noted by many over the past few weeks might be due to a self-imposed quiet period ahead of the book release, and they’re saving up a bunch of stories to run coinciding with the book.

1) Public education and Social Security are two of the last remaining honey pots of public funds available for looting. They know how public education works, but it doesn’t profit them (see charter schools/voucher movement).
2) Most of these folks have never actually stepped foot out of the country except probably to go to some tourist trap in Cabo on a 2-week tour of Europe (being generous here). The House Ways and Means Committee did not hesitate this week to add $300 billion to federal budget deficits over the next decade by making six heavily lobbied corporate tax breaks permanent without offsetting the cost. Meanwhile, House Speaker John Boehner refuses to even consider legislation to renew federal jobless benefits unless “it is paid for and includes something to help create jobs.” Talk about a fiscal double standard

MOSCOW — Russia has taken another major step toward restricting its once freewheeling Internet, as President Vladimir V. Putin quietly signed a new law requiring popular online voices to register with the government, a measure that lawyers, Internet pioneers and political activists said Tuesday would give the government a much wider ability to track who said what online.

Mr. Putin’s action on Monday, just weeks after he disparaged the Internet as “a special C.I.A. project,” borrowed a page from the restrictive Internet playbooks of many governments around the world that have been steadily smothering online freedoms they once tolerated.

On Nigeria’s kidnapped girls:

In the latest kidnappings, more girls were taken from their homes late Sunday in the villages of Warabe and Wala, said Hamba Tada, an official in the area. Heavily armed militants descended from surrounding hills, stealing grain and livestock belonging to villagers, forcing the girls, ages 12 to 15, into an 18-seater bus, and warning locals not to alert the authorities.

Is a heavily-armed citizenry responsible for Nigeria’s kidnapping epidemic?

On Nigeria’s kidnapped girls:

In the past, Boko Haram has frequently targeted schools, which it sees as symbols of the secular government’s overreach. Male students have been slaughtered, while the female students have been let go after admonitions to return to their families, abandon their studies and get married. The latest kidnappings appear to represent a hardening of the militants’ line, though not a wholesale departure from it.

nytimes.com

Is Nigeria’s religious-extremist, anti-secular attitude responsible for the kidnapping of 300 girls?

Hey, I’m just asking questions here…..

Sounds like they might be victims of “No Child Left Behind”.

“The seniors were in the first grade when President George W. Bush signed No Child Left Behind into law. The program called for schools to demonstrate yearly progress and to show that all students are proficient on state standardized tests by 2014. Most states have received waivers under President Barack Obama, whose Race to the Top program has pledged $4.35 billion in state grants in four years to boost education standards.”

Here are a couple of paragraphs ZooBorns had posted:

There’s a new baby Klipspringer at Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago! Klipspingers (Afrikaans for ‘rock jumper’) are dwarf antelopes so tiny that an adult can fit all four of their hooves on a Canadian dollar coin, approximately 36 mm in diameter.

Born March 30, the female Klipspringer calf is the second offspring of mom Triumph and dad Dash, who were recommended as a breeding pair as a part of the Klipspringer Species Survival Program. The female calf joins her sister Arya, who also resides at the zoo.

re: #172 Bulworth

It’s not just a secular government, but one that is pushing western ideals. Boko Haram translates as “Western Education is Forbidden”, but that’s short for the longer name, which essentially boils down to an Islamic jihad group that follows in the footsteps of others, including al Qaeda, that want to impose Sharia law, and speak of killing unbelievers and infidels.

live.wsj.com

The video gives short shrift to this, but while some think that the Nigerian government has brought this on itself by being corrupt, and using heavy-handed tactics, the terror group is looking to set up a state of its own and this ongoing terror campaign can be seen as a civil war or insurrection with the intent of forming an Islamic state in the northeastern region of the country.

With the Nigerian forces limiting their exposure and doing a better job of hemming in Boko Haram, the terrorists have focused on soft targets to maximize the carnage. That’s why they’re going after girls’ schools, which is a clear sign that they’re going after western education and improving the lives of women.

Where have we seen that before? Oh wait. Pretty much everywhere that al Qaeda has left its droppings, including in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Vocabuary Word of the Day:

Secularity

Secular and secularity derive from the Latin word saecularis meaning of a generation, belonging to an age. The Christian doctrine that God exists outside time led medieval Western culture to use secular to indicate separation from specifically religious affairs and involvement in temporal ones.

This does not necessarily imply hostility to God or religion, though some use the term this way (see “secularism”, below); Martin Luther used to speak of “secular work” as a vocation from God for most Christians[citation needed] Secularity is best understood, not as being “anti-religious”, but as being “religiously neutral” since many activities in religious bodies are secular themselves and most versions of secularity do not lead to irreligiosity.[2]

It’s just various factions wanting power and control. They just use different facades to hide it behind. So they cheer Putin for enacting controls they would *love* to enact in the US. And they boo Islamic clerics doing the same thing since it’s not *their* hierarchy that would be in charge. It’s also mutually useful for both sides to have a villain to rail about since it acts as the useful exterior threat to point to and justify the power grab.

The total garbage channels now outnumber the only semi-garbage channels by around 20:1 now. If I were to include the channels that formerly would only have been broadcast on UHF or a 10 watt radio station like the one Sarah Palin is on, it’s probably closer to 30:1.

Yeah, they’re about a quarter of an inch long. I’ve got a similar species of jumping spider here in Toronto. They appear mostly in July and August. They are fun to watch, and unlike web spinning spiders they’ve got great eyesight.

Anyone want to consider how the Republicans would handle being on a Democratic committee in a complete role reversal?

So, why should the Dems treat it any different? Of course, that doesn’t mean they will go that way. This is the Democratic party we are talking about. They seem to always try to do the right thing even if it bites them in the rump politically.

Yep. The counterpoint is that first with no Democrats it is plainly and obviously partisan, and second that regardless what the subcommittee finds and presents, with or without Dems, the house will vote to approve because majority R.

So really it’s a question of which is more effective for persuading the narrow slice of the public that has not made up its mind. With the begged question of whether that slice exists, much less is large enough to make a difference.

re: #233 ObserverArt

Your post just reminded me of something.

As many have pointed out before…”God” was added to many things in America as a reminder that we were a god-fearing country during the cold war with communist Russia (and China, etc.).

Here we now find U.S. religious and political leaders patting Putin on the head for doing good by banning foul language and placing gays back in the closet…or prisons.

What the hell???

To me it comes back to Jefferson’s observation that there are two types of political people; aristocrats and democrats.

Aristocrats ‘distrust the people and so attempt to draw all power to themselves.’ Communism, Fascism and all the other authoritarian -isms are just facades for this.

Democrats ‘trust the people and regard them as the safest and most honest, if not always the wisest, repository of power.’ I wonder if Jefferson would think the same if he saw how things were in the States now?

I recently added a third category; barbarians. According to H. Beam Piper these are people who ‘don’t understand civilization and wouldn’t like it if they did.’ Clive Bundy and the people hanging out at his tribal village are barbarians.

The ironically named “Stop the War Coalition” opposes Obama’s plan to weaken Assad
Analyst criticizes US decision on SNC

White House officials said on Monday that the Obama administration decided to let the main group of foreign-backed insurgents known as the Syrian National Coalition open a diplomatic mission in Washington. They also said the US would and increase “non-lethal assistance” to the insurgents fighting the Syrian government by $27 million — raising the total to $287 million.

The diplomatic mission office is not equal to an embassy but will now be regarded a “foreign mission” under US law.

The US has called the SNC “effectively the government of Syria”, Jim Brann, London-based spokesman for Stop the War Coalition, told Press TV in a phone interview Wednesday. By making such a decision, he said, the US has either “simply lost all sense” or they are implying that it will not recognize the Syrian government anymore.
