Putin Signs Law to Restrict and Monitor Bloggers, Thanks Edward Snowden for Inspiring It

Glenn Greenwald has nothing to say
World • Views: 18,565

Meanwhile, in Edward Snowden’s home away from home, President Vladimir Putin is continuing to tighten his autocratic control over the Internet with a new “bloggers law” that requires Internet site owners and bloggers to register with the government, and requires any organizations and companies that host these sites to keep records (that must be stored in Russia) for at least 6 months of everything they publish.

For good measure, Putin also signed a law that criminalizes profanity with heavy fines for using “vulgarities” in TV, movies, books or plays.

The New York Times reports that Putin gave a speech in St. Petersburg at the end of April in which he signaled the start of the crackdown by thanking Edward Snowden for bringing his attention to this important issue.

“You know that it all began initially, when the Internet first appeared, as a special C.I.A. project,” he said in remarks broadcast live nationally, before adding that “special services are still at the center of things.” He specifically thanked Edward J. Snowden, the former National Security Agency contractor granted asylum in Russia, for revealing to the world how efficient the N.S.A. was at collecting information.

Mr. Putin went on to say that someone writing online whose opinion affects thousands or even hundreds of thousands of people should be considered a media outlet. He said he was not talking about a ban, only acting “the way it is done all over the world.”

Glenn Greenwald’s excuse for never saying anything about this subject is that it’s not his beat. He’s focused on other things. How dare you question him, you drooling subservient Obamabot?

Maybe it’s just me, but this issue seems to impinge directly on everything Glenn Greenwald has been writing and speaking and ranting about for years — free speech, civil liberties, surveillance, blogging — and it also directly involves Edward Snowden, the man responsible for his newfound adulation and fame … and he can’t find time to write a single word about it?

Seems odd.

Greenwald’s too busy putting the finishing touches on a book tour. /

Well, not really sarcasm. He’s got a book coming out, so he’s too busy indicating outrageous outrage over US surveillance while ignoring even more invasive and authoritarian surveillance from Russia on their own citizens, taking away speech rights from Russians of all walks of life.

The direct effect of the Russian move is to limit criticism of the government - hitting at bloggers and journalists who don’t hew the official line of RT or other Russian mouthpieces.

The law will have a chilling effect on free speech, and is it a wonder that the authoritarians in the US are salivating over this very proposition (like Fischer).

Widely known as the “bloggers law,” the new Russian measure specifies that any site with more than 3,000 visitors daily will be considered a media outlet akin to a newspaper and be responsible for the accuracy of the information published.

Fortunately, since LGF is irrelevant!!!!!1, Charles will remain safely anonymous.

Syria policy update: One U.S.-Backed Rebel Group Cooperates With Al-Qaeda in Syria

A major Syrian opposition faction is cooperating with an al Qaeda-linked rebel group along the border with Israel as the opposition chief prepares to meet with officials in Washington to lobby for weapons, in part to fight al Qaeda.

The Syrian Revolutionaries Front, part of the U.S.-backed Free Syrian Army, joined up with al Qaeda’s Nusra Front in the past few weeks to capture from the regime strategic hilltops in southwestern Quneitra province overlooking the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights, according to FSA representatives with the fighters.

In the central city of Homs, however, rebels suffered a major defeat. They began evacuating the city’s old quarter under terms of a cease-fire after a debilitating government siege that lasted nearly two years. It was the beginning of the end of the uprising in Homs.

In Quneitra, the cooperation between Western-backed rebels and extremists comes at an embarrassing time for the main political opposition group in exile. The opposition’s president, Ahmed Jarba, is now in Washington and slated to meet Secretary of State John Kerry on Thursday and President Barack Obama sometime during his visit to renew requests for American-made weapons.

A member of the opposition delegation in Washington denied the FSA was coordinating with Nusra.

It can be done: Russia bans profanity. Our 1st Amendment protects political speech, not profanity - Bryan Fischer

Obscenity

A category of speech unprotected by the First Amendment.

A comprehensive, legal definition of obscenity has been difficult to establish. Yet key components of the current obscenity test stem from a District Court case tried in 1933. United States v. One Book Called “Ulysses” 5 F. Supp. 182 (S.D.N.Y 1933), aff’d United States v. One Book Entitled Ulysses by James Joyce, 72 F2d 705 (2nd Cir. 1934) determined that a work investigated for obscenity must be considered in its entirety and not merely judged on its parts.

Currently, obscenity is evaluated by federal and state courts alike using a tripartite standard established by Miller v. California 413 U.S. 15 (1973). The Miller test for obscenity includes the following criteria: (1) whether ‘the average person, applying contemporary community standards’ would find that the work, ‘taken as a whole,’ appeals to ‘prurient interest’ (2) whether the work depicts or describes, in a patently offensive way, sexual conduct specifically defined by the applicable state law, and (3) whether the work, ‘taken as a whole,’ lacks serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value.

bryan has a problem here in that 1) obscenity and profanity are not the same thing, and 2) his standards are abnormal, not ‘contemporary community standards’

OK, can the Western media start calling Snowden a fucking Russian tool now?

At this juncture, it’s pretty damn obvious that Putin considers him (and Greenwald) to be such.

60 dog philosopher  May 7, 2014 2:21:52pm

In First Amendment law, a prior restraint is government action that prohibits speech or other expression before it can take place. There are two common forms of prior restraints. The first is a statute or regulation that requires a speaker to acquire a permit or license before speaking, and the second is a judicial injunction that prohibits certain speech. Both types of prior restraint are strongly disfavored, and, with some exceptions, generally unconstitutional.

Doesn’t suprise me Greenwald is silent on this. He is first and foremost merely a typical America-hater- not the type that wishes ill-will or anything like that openly against Americans in general. But the type that traffics in the lamest and anti-intellectual forms of moral equivalency.

A bathtub contains water so it is the same thing as an Olympic swimming pool.

This is the essence of the brain at work inside Greenwald’s head- trumped mightily however by a massive, massive, (and even more massive) ego the size of an overflowing Olympic swimming pool.

Massive ego + twisted sense of Moral Equivalency = Dudebro Extrordinaire

This is so sad, not the picture, which is AWESOME, but the whole damned thing. What in the hell is wrong with girls being educated? Haven’t studies and examples shown over and over and over that having educated women and girls is actually better for a country than not?

These assholes need to be stopped. It’s 2014, not 1014. It’s enough already. I hope they find these girls soon, and that they haven’t been hurt too badly (though I shudder to think what’s really been happening, I think we all know what).

Educated women and girls are good for a country and good for the planet, unless by ‘good’ you mean ‘an aid to highly profitable corruption through patriarchy’. It’s horrible that this kidnapping is very profitable to the terrorists who did it, and probably profitable to the government officials who looked the other way until it was too late.

No wonder at all. I’m sure Bryan and many others would like to install many Russian-type controls in America.

And after seeing Kragar’s post #67, doesn’t that group also look like some American’s in the news? Like maybe members of the Bundy Ranch protection squad.

This stuff is getting downright crazy as well as chilling. Total morons out to take over. I sure hope the good people, the real silent majority are paying attention to all this crap. What we have is self-styled conservatives destroying the U.S. Constitution and a willing bunch of lunkhead politicians serving it up.

Edit…I see backwoods sleuth beat me to associating the guys in #67 as Bundy Loons. Seems many of us see things the same way!

Agreed, but they have no official office, no official power, and no constitutional role in government. I don’t know what you’d call the spouse of the president otherwise.

As private citizens they can do what they like. I was more saying I think it’s odd that they have this semi-official status. It made sense back in the day when women essentially weren’t perceived as autonomous people in their own right, but it doesn’t make sense today (except to the extent that some people hold on to that view of the world).

The corollary is that a 5 year old can destroy things pretty efficiently. Adults with real power create things.

Forget Russia. What of Brazil and what they are doing to the “slum” areas… and their Olympic prepping boondoggle… Glenn won’t touch that stuff.

I don’t think so. 1st ladies usually do a good job at promoting some important social issues (education, health, etc). I think the position has been helpful and they’re going to be knocking around the White House anyways. Might as well put them to work.

I think, in order not to have total madmen running things, it’s useful to ensure that leaders’ families can follow them around to some extent, so you do need to have some staffing to support that.

It’s not fuzzy from a constitutional standpoint. It’s fuzzy because they use government resources, I guess. I can understand how a presidential spouse would require at least Secret Service protection, and given the requests that doubtless come in, correspondence, etc., that they would have a personal assistant, at least. Plus meeting with foreign dignitaries and their spouses, I assume.

Other than that, they have no official power. They really are the people in the White House who only have a “Bully Pulpit” to work with.

I just don’t get what happens to men (and it is a men’s issue, which pisses people off when you put it that way) to make them think this is OK. Who wants to have sex with people who are being used and abused and sold? What the hell has to happen to your head to think that’s just fine? Saudi activist sentenced to 10 years, 1,000 lashes for insulting Islam

Prominent Saudi activist Raif Badawi on Wednesday was sentenced to 10 years in prison and 1,000 lashes by a Saudi court for insulting Islam, said his wife and a source who followed the case closely.

The judgment also included a 1 million riyal fine, which is equal to about $267,000.

Badawi, a respected rights activist in Saudi Arabia, first got into legal hot water with the Saudi government after starting a liberal website and forum where users could discuss religion.

I mean the “they’re knocking around the White House - might as well put them to work” line. This is exactly what I’m talking about when I refer to the olde times idea that women aren’t actually independent people.

How about: they might actually have lives of their own and not want to be a kind of feel-good sidekick for their spouse’s political career?

I admire the work that various first ladies have done, Republican and Democratic alike, but there’s no need for the “office” in contemporary society. In fact, the point about “First Lady Bill” is exactly it: let’s see whether he takes on the “traditional First Lady” role. Two predictions:

1) He won’t.
2) The “hurr-hurr” crowd will in any case drone endlessly on about how it’s emasculating for a man to be in that position, thus confirming that it’s part of the “keep women in their place” view of the world.

FWIW, I thought that whole health care lead by her was a debacle in the making from the get-go, precisely because the First Spouse has no official constitutional authority.

Jocelyn Frye is the Deputy Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy and Director of Policy and Special Projects for the First Lady. In this role, she oversees the broad issue portfolio of the First Lady, with a particular focus on women, families, and engagement with the greater DC community.

This seems like a two-pronged appointment. As mentioned above, a First Spouse having an agenda she/he wants to pursue is not really a problem. Mostly that involves giving speeches, interviews, making appearances and the like.

Even if they won the Senate, and even that’s iffy on any given day, they’re still not in any danger of taking 2/3 of the seats. I really never thought of myself as someone who a bank would lend money to, but if you demonstrate a likelihood of being able to pay it back with interest, you’re in.

Full disclosure: I took 10 years fiddling around with my business plan, and didn’t think it was worthy until I went cycling with a bank president who said ‘just do it’, or words to that effect. Also, a good friend loaned me the money so I could pose as risking some of my own.

I’d be interested to know what is going to precipitate their precipitous departure from the Cult of Greenwald.

I think we are already starting to see it. The more Putin turns Snowden into his pet monkey on a leash and and the dudebros see that Russia is doing heavy internet limits they will be forced into reality.

At the same time I expect the other half, Greenwald, to continue to try to keep using Snowden for his own advancement and anyone with a brain will see Greenwald is selling an empty suit.

Dudebros might be a bit thick but not unintelligent. They will get the message, but they don’t seem to have the fortitude to ever admit they are wrong. They will then move about like a slinky!

Just my opinion…but I love to study the human being and their reactions.

Boko Haram believes that the only thing you need is Holy Scripture. Check.
Boko Haram believes that a woman’s place is in the home. Check.
Boko Haram believes that homosexuality should be punishable by death, along with premarital and extramarital sex. Check.
Boko Haram believes in an emphasis on God’s Law, and that God’s Law trumps civil or secular law. Check.
Boko Haram believes they are the ‘saved’ and that everyone else is a sinner doomed to Hellfire for all eternity, not to mention that they believe they have divine dispensation to kill sinners. Check.

Rather than obliterating the wall separating church and state all at once, the Roberts Court’s opinions are dismantling it brick by brick. The clear message from Town of Greece v. Galloway is that prayers before legislative sessions are allowed, no matter how much they are sectarian and from a particular religion. In fact, the practice in the Town of Greece was exactly what Justice Kennedy said could still violate the Establishment Clause: a “pattern of prayers over time” that “proselytize[d]” and “betray[ed] an impermissible government purpose.”

Islamic militant attack in Nigeria kills hundreds

As many as 300 people were killed in the assault late Monday on the town of Gamboru Ngala on Nigeria’s border with Cameroon. The extremists opened fire on a marketplace bustling with shoppers taking advantage of the cooler nighttime temperatures in the semi-desert region, then rampaged through the town for 12 hours, setting houses ablaze and shooting those who tried to escape.

The attack and hundreds of casualties were confirmed by Borno state information commissioner Mohammed Bulama, who spoke to The Associated Press by telephone Wednesday.

Boko Haram attacks Nigerian village used by military in search for abducted girls

The assault on the village came after military troops deployed to the area were called to the border area near Chad, where reports — later determined to be false — surfaced that the schoolgirls had been found with Boko Haram militants, witnesses and local officials said

Witnesses described a well-coordinated attack that began shortly after 1:30 p.m. local time Monday at a busy outdoor market in Gamboru Ngala.

Wearing military uniforms, the militants arrived with three armored personnel carriers, they said.

They shouted “Allahu Akbar” — “God is great” — and opened up on the market, firing rocket-propelled grenades and tossing improvised explosive devices, witnesses said

More GOP infighting, this time in California, where one candidate for governor accuses the other of pushing Shariah.

It’s pure bigotry & and anti-Muslim scare mongering—the guy he’s accusing is brown (parents are immigrants from India) and has a foreign name that could be mistaken for a Muslim one. He was actually raised Hindu.

No siree, there’s no such thing as Islamophobia.

Neel Kashkari, GOP Candidate for Governor Out of Irvine, Swears He’s Not Pushing Sharia Law

See the update at the end of Page 3 on gubernatorial candidate Neel Kashkari swearing he’s not pushing for Sharia law.

ORIGINAL POST, MAY 7, 7:32 A.M.: Tim Donnelly, the Tea Party favorite for governor of California, apparently noticed that his primary election opponent, Irvine’s Neel Kashkari, picked up endorsements from such nationally known “moderate” Republicans as Mitt Romney, Jeb Bush and Pete Wilson. It might explain why Donnelly, a member of the state Assembly out of Hesperia, is now playing the “Sharia” card.

Donnelly posted on Facebook Monday:

BREAKING: Neel Kashkari supported the United States submitting to the Islamic, Shariah banking code in 2008 when he ran TARP.

Shariah is “the seditious religio-political-legal code authoritative Islam seeks to impose worldwide under a global theocracy.”

This revelation is spreading fast, as people like Anita Gunn refer to Mr. Kashkari’s support of Shariah an “October Surprise.”

Donnelly includes links to a tweet by Gunn and a 2008 Washington Times column where conservative critic Frank Gaffney went off on Kashkari’s presumed role at a U.S. Department of Treasury seminar titled “Islamic Finance 101.” […]

I get so freaking sick of this shit.

Republicans have no intention of listening to Trey Gowdy.
A number of Republican candidates and conservative groups have openly used the Sept. 11, 2012, attacks in Benghazi, Libya, as a cash grab. And that’s likely to continue despite a strongly worded rebuke from the new chairman of the Republican select committee assigned to investigate the response to the attacks.

In this case it’s just Killgore being horribly awkward at expressing himself. First spouses put themselves to work, they don’t need to be put to work. It’s also entirely possible that someone might have a wife who’s really not up to doing that sort of public-facing work, and that’d be fine, too.

There’s nothing outrageous about the idea that it’s good for first ladies to work, but the weird, awkward phrasing of ‘put them to work’ threw people off.

I don’t think so. 1st ladies usually do a good job at promoting some important social issues (education, health, etc). I think the position has been helpful and they’re going to be knocking around the White House anyways. Might as well put them to work.

That’s after he tut-tutted about “the government” using hashtags in a photo of Michelle Obama holding up a sign regarding the Nigerian kidnappings, and the First Lady should be surrounded by Navy Seals.

The First Lady (whomever she may be) is under no obligation to do a damned thing. That’s her prerogative. Nobody said a First Lady shouldn’t be working to promote causes (as far as I know, the First Lady receives no compensation, so it’s volunteer work, but still). I did think putting Hillary Clinton at the helm of healthcare reform was a bad idea, because the First Spouse is not an elected/appointed position, and has no constitutional powers whatsoever.

U.S. Sending Small Military Team to Nigeria to Help Plan Search For Girls Held By Militants

A team of less than 10 U.S. military members will arrive in Nigeria in coming days to be part of the coordination cell to assist that country in the search for more than 200 school girls taken by an Islamic terror group three weeks ago. A Pentagon spokesman said there are no plans right now to conduct a broader military operation in Nigeria.

The White House announced Tuesday that an inter-agency coordination cell would arrive in Nigeria to provide any assistance in the search.

According to Pentagon spokesman Col. Steve Warren, the team, mostly from US Africa Command in Germany, will arrive in Nigeria in the next few days. Warren said this military team will be part of the larger interagency team that will assess what further assistance can be provided to Nigeria.

This larger team will also include members from the State Department, the Justice Department and the FBI, Warren said “we’re looking at this as a crisis response to a hostage situation.”

Warren said the military team will bring a range of expertise including communications, logistics and intelligence that could be helpful in finding the missing girls.

The spokesman was clear that the military team is being sent for coordination and assessment, “at this time we are not considering a US operation to rescue the girls.”

You coyly never actually mentoined what it is you envision, depriving not only us, but the world of the skilled military-political solution that you had.

Why do you hide your light under a bushel like that? I’m sure that your normal strenuous analysis of the situation—the same sort of rigor you’ve brought to bear when, after years of commenting on radical Islam you showed you had no clue what Sufism actually was—resulted in a tip-top envisioning of an action plan to rescue those girls and address the circumstances that led to their kidnapping.

Imagine how the U.S. would look (and probably does in many places) if they just showed our worst—they most ill-behaved, violent, criminals amongst us. And the most downtrodden—poor, drug addicted, prostitutes, etc. And the hateful religious fanatics, racists, science deniers, militia/sovereign citizen assholes.

It means America would look like an episode of “The Jerry Springer Show”, which - thanks to reruns here in the Czech Republic - most Czechs think Americans are actually like if they hail from the Deep South.

Boko Haram is trying to wrest control of northern Nigeria back from what it sees as “false Muslims.” The International Crisis Group estimates that the al Qaeda-affiliated terrorist group has killed more than 4,000 people in Nigeria since it began its insurgency four years ago; it perpetrated seven attacks on schools in 2013, according to Amnesty International. Well, it’s almost the top of the hour. Time for the GOP OUTRAGE at 5:00 P.M. PDT.

Tell Obama to Defend Religious Freedom

Make sure America is defending this God-given right.

President Obama is not taking freedom of religion seriously.

The Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom was established to be the top advocate for religious liberty throughout the world. But Obama has left this post vacant for the second time in his term—sending a signal to the international community that fighting against religious persecution is not a priority. This is an outrage.

gop.com

Oh yeah, could you send us a couple of thousand bucks?

Thanks.

PS: They forgot to mention that the GOP blocked his first nominee to the position. He re-nominated her, then she quit last year to try and make some money.

Donnelly, who will be the GOP nominee for governor unless he gets run over by a bus, is a total piece of crap, just like 90%+ of Republicans running for office across the country these days.

He has no self control at all, and anything bouncing around in his empty head just gets spewed out. For that, California Republicans love him.

The increasing irrelevance of the CA GOP to state governance has freed them to follow the voices in their heads.

5th District candidates declare their belief in Jesus

Congressional 5th District candidate Harvey Sparks said that as a follower of Jesus Christ, he believes in absolute truth at a Republican debate Tuesday evening at the First Baptist Church in Edmond.

Pastors of Reclaiming Oklahoma for Christ presented a 5th District candidates’ debate for Republicans running for the Oklahoma Congressional 5th District. About 450 people attended the event, according to Gary Ellis, associate pastor.

Each candidate spoke of how Jesus Christ is the Lord and Savior of their lives when they were asked what Jesus means to them by Oklahoma Wesleyan University President Everett Piper, who moderated the event.

Sparks said he believes the protection of the unborn is always right as well as the defense of traditional marriage. God has ordained marriage as the building block of life, said Sparks, of Oklahoma City.

“It’s not only against our faith. It’s against the constitution,” Jett said. “The constitution says, ‘Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.’”

Al Franken argued convincingly that the Media are not biased one way or the other politically. What they ARE biased against is doing their fucking job, because it’s easier to follow the crowd than to investigate, to cover the horserace instead of investigating which sides claims are bullshit, to make everything the next “-gate” rather than expose the hollowness of most faux scandals, and to sensationalize rather than inform.

Since Fox is obviously biased in favor of the GOP, I’ll assume this is referring to the mainstream media.

In addition to the laziness identified above, I’d say the MSM also has a systematic bias in favor of corporatism and the status quo. The coverage of OWS made that pretty clear.

I started to sour on Penn Jillette after listening to his radio show/podcast. He’s full-on in that deluded fantasy world where if only we get rid of taxes and government, the wealthily and corporations will voluntarily build roads, sewers, hire police, etc.

Yeah, I watched the first season and a half of Bullshit on DVD before it started to sink in that it was basically Libertarian Weekly.

P&T didn’t make any bones about the fact they were going to present views as they saw them. That’s fine. The big turning point for me was their episode that denied second-hand smoke caused cancer.

They kind of half-assedly admitted they were wrong about it years later.

263 Justanotherhuman  May 7, 2014 5:37:58pm

I’m sure libertarians would love to be billed every month for their police, fire, military, and every other “free” service we are provided for our taxes, along with infrastructure, schools, universities, etc. Remember the guy in TN who neglected to pay a $75 fee for his “fire service” and they let his house burn down?

MSNBC Video

I mean, can you imagine getting dozens of extra bills every month in addition to the ones you already get from private and corporate creditors?

Any country would sink before it got off the ground, if it lasted that long, and even if such political thought became the norm in an already established society, it would ensure its certain demise.
