Stunning New NASA Image: Uranus Seen From Saturn

Saturn’s neighbor seen from Cassini for the first time
Science • Views: 20,968

This view from NASA’s Cassini spacecraft features a blue planet, but unlike the view from July 19, 2013 (PIA17172) that featured our home planet, this blue orb is Uranus, imaged by Cassini for the first time.

Uranus is a pale blue in this natural color image because its visible atmosphere contains methane gas and few aerosols or clouds. Methane on Uranus — and its sapphire-colored sibling, Neptune — absorbs red wavelengths of incoming sunlight, but allows blue wavelengths to escape back into space, resulting in the predominantly bluish color seen here. Cassini imaging scientists combined red, green and blue spectral filter images to create a final image that represents what human eyes might see from the vantage point of the spacecraft.

Uranus has been brightened by a factor of 4.5 to make it more easily visible. The outer portion of Saturn’s A ring, seen at bottom right, has been brightened by a factor of two. The bright ring cutting across the image center is Saturn’s narrow F ring.

Uranus was approximately 28.6 astronomical units from Cassini and Saturn when this view was obtained. An astronomical unit is the average distance from Earth to the sun, equal to 93,000,000 miles (150,000,000 kilometers).

Meanwhile, in Russia:

The European Central Bank says capital flight from Russia since the Ukraine crisis erupted may be four times higher than admitted by the Kremlin, a clear sign that sanctions pressure is inflicting serious damage on the Russian economy.

Mario Draghi, the ECB’s president, said the outflows from Russia have been large enough over recent weeks to push up the euro exchange rate, complicating monetary policy for the ECB.

“We had very significant outflows that have been estimated by some to be in the order of 160bn Euro ($222 billion USD) out of Russia,” he said, without specifying where the information came from.

Mr Ash (of Standard Bank) said the estimate is puzzling since it does not tally with the foreign reserve data published by the Russian central bank. While the rouble has dropped 9pc this year, it has not crashed.

The Russian lender Sberbank says swap contracts have masked the true scale of currency intervention, suggesting that reserves may have fallen below the stated $477bn. “From a systematic viewpoint, the central bank has loaned expensive roubles to the market, and these roubles have mainly been used to purchase hard currency,” it said. While it is possible to disguise outflows with complex derivatives to a certain degree, this is hard to keep up for long.

Smash This Anti-Capitalist Golden Calf Piñata And Win Free Money

Chilean-born artist Sebastian Errazuriz constructed the piñata for the NYCxDesign festival, which kicks off tomorrow and runs through May 20th. And though part of the fun here is the opportunity to beat the papier mâché daylights out of this Wall Street bull-esque symbol of capitalism and greed (and biblical false idol), Errazuriz is turning the tables on all of us, filling the piñata with about 1,000 one dollar bills that participants can fight over once the calf smashes. “The people will be really excited to destroy the (symbol of) capital will then end up running for the capital,” Errazuriz told the Daily News.

Errazuriz is no stranger to pointing out human cogs in the capitalist machine—one of his more recent projects was the “Occupy Chairs,” a series of fold-out chairs emblazoned with OWS slogans like “1 % Rich, 99% Poor” and “Shit Is Fucked Up And Bullshit.” Those chairs were hung at the 2012 New York Armory Show and offered up for $2,500-a-pop, a “Trojan horse for the 1 percent,” according to Errazuriz’s website.

re: #88 Skip Intro

That’s a feature, not a bug in the GOP mindset. It means that you can’t pass any new laws that regulate, tax, or pretty much anything else unless it’s in a crisis situation (like a pending shutdown). They’ll see the lack of legislation as something to be proud of, and that when you look at the budgets, instead of seeing all the pain caused, they’ll look at the deficit and say that they should have done even more (even though it’s clear that the economy has been sluggish precisely because of the austerity measures put in place by the sequester (which itself was meant to be a failsafe to get the parties to agree to a budget deal - and the GOP turned it into an axe to get even more cuts)).

very much so, it could be claimed that Sinema and Barber won thanks to the fact that there were hard care Libertarian candidates running in those congressional districts that gave them the win. √ Kyrsten Sinema (D) 48.5%
Vernon Parker (R) 44.8%
Powell Gammill (L) 6.6%

√ Ron Barber (D) 50.42%
Martha McSally (R) 49.58%
Anthony Powell (L) 0.02%

do I think that it gives the GOP cover, yes… do I think it’ll stop the GOP from using the issue as a cudgel against them… perhaps, but its not as if the GOP is especially concerned about the validity of their attacks…. You want a witness to testify. Several of your members have said there will be trials, criminal and civil. Your witness, being in a position of authority, might be subject to the criminal and would be subject to the civil based on what she says. So she exercises her constitutional right not to let you send her to prison or impoverish her.

Waaah, she’s using the constitution. We have to punish her.

Barber has already gone up against two of them, Jesse Kelly who ran an automatic weapons rally ad for the special election post Gifford’s shooting and McSally is a USAF pilot wingnut. Can’t speak to Sinema’s complete situation because her district was just created for the 2012 elections thanks to the census results…but this is Arizona, which is the place where the Governor sued the INDEPENDENT congressional redistricting commission president for not being partisan enough.

As I mentioned before, do I think it’s smart for them to run away from being Democrats, no… but do I understand it given the political realities of the state, yes I do.

We do. It’s called INEL. Pit 9 fiasco They’re still cleaning that and other messes up.

Also SL-1 reactor accident

The remains of the reactor (and the hands of the victims) are still buried on site.

One technician was blown to the ceiling of the containment dome and impaled on a control rod. His body remained there until it was taken down six days later. The men were so heavily exposed to radiation that their hands had to be buried separately with other radioactive waste, and their bodies were interred in lead coffins.”

I don’t know. This just sounds so believable.

An attorney running to become a district judge in Tulsa County says he is related to famed General George Smith Patton, despite a local VFW Post’s claims that he isn’t.

Jon Patton, one of several challengers seeking to replace District Judge Kurt Glassco, says his father and a cousin did some research before his father passed away, and determined they were related to the fabled World War II warrior.

My dad, back in his later life before he passed away, he was doing a bunch of research and everything, and basically he was doing all that with a cousin of mine, and so from what I understand they did determine that they were related,” he told KRMG.

Related the The Patton? No, but to Sarah Palin? Damn good chance.

re: #152 Gus

I’ve read the article at NBC and I’m still left curious about the action pictures. The scales are wrong - there’s no way that a photographer would be that close to those ships, moving and shooting at sea. The ships themselves are shown very dangerously close together as well.

Other pictures - the ones of sailors posing - look right for the technology of the time.

Between the SLOW orthocromatic films of the era, the lenses available in 1898 for such work, the lack of motion blur and the fact that these are all glass plates make me wonder if these weren’t “recreations” of the battle scenes for use by the yellow news of the time.

The Image of the USS Boston look most likely to be real - no wake so very slow or stopped while firing allowing the camera to actually work within it’s limitations. But between the motion of the sea, the vibrations of the triple expansion engines and the film available at the time, I find the image of the U.S.S. Raleigh hard to believe for example. Compare it to this image of HMS Lion burning after being hit during the Battle of Jutland in 1916 (18 years of tech improvement in cameras and film which was moving like computer tech today):

Understand, I’m not doubting what was found. I do think that some of the photos were made back then to be deceptive and that people are too used to thinking that old photographs can be trusted. Unfortunately the people behind the cameras then are just like those today with a digital camera and a copy of Photoshop.

Bundyville about to get interesting again.

FBI investigating Bundy supporters in BLM dispute

A dramatic development in the saga surrounding rancher Cliven Bundy, the FBI has entered the case.

The 8 News NOW I-Team has learned that FBI agents have started an investigation into the events surrounding a potentially deadly showdown one month ago.

It is one thing for Cliven Bundy and his supporters to square off against an assortment of Bureau of Land Management employees. It is quite another when the FBI enters the picture, and that is exactly what has happened.

The I-Team has confirmed that FBI agents have launched a formal investigation into alleged death threats, intimidation and possible weapons violations that culminated with a dangerous showdown on April 12, and the first people to be interviewed by FBI agents are Metro Police, starting with Clark County Sheriff Doug Gillispie.

The article is pretty supportive of the idea. I have mixed feelings about it. I’m not really comfortable with the idea of government conducting hashtag diplomacy, taunting Putin on twitter, etc. I think it cheapens what should be serious efforts.
I don’t have any real objection to hashtag activism by the public. It can raise awareness on serious issues but the quality of the effort depends on the quality of information and people behind it. Misinformation and outrage addicted puritans can be a potential problem. Mostly in efforts to get people fired from their jobs, cancelling TV shows or trying to ruin the careers of comedians. It’s a very mixed bag.

More about the Great American seditionists Sean Hannity couldn’t give enough support to.

FBI agents also spoke to an entire squad of Metro officers, who were on the scene to act as a buffer between the crowd and the BLM. Bundy supporters have insisted in emails and calls to 8 News NOW that no one in the crowd pointed weapons at BLM or Metro, but officers told the I-Team that is exactly what they saw, that many with guns set up behind women and children.

“It is not a rumor. When we first got out there and made a left to divide I-15, that is all you saw. You saw kids and women and horses in the backdrop and then men with guns, laying on the ground, in the back of pickup trucks. We’re going, ‘wow, this would never happen in Las Vegas,’ But it was there. That is not a rumor. It is reality and I saw it with my own eyes,” Metro Police Sgt. Tom Jenkins said.

Another problem is when something is officially classified by the US Army (for example) but published in detail in Jane’s Defense Weekly (or elsewhere). These are current and former employees, and detailees to the ODNI. These people will have signed all kinds of NDAs and have agreed to the terms of classified security clearances that already govern and will restrict what they can talk about long after they leave the job.

For them to be able to do an end run around the existing rules by first anonymously leaking restricted information to the press, and then citing that leak in an official publication would be insane.

Here we go. I can’t wait to see the expressions on these clowns’ faces when all their assets get frozen under a RICO indictment.

Get ready to lose lots of games and have him, right or wrong, take the blame for the next 3 to 5 years. I pity him. I really hoped the Texans would bite because that was his only real hope to do anything more than Tebow.

Yep.

FWIW, the Texans still blew it. A DE, regardless how good he is, is not what they needed. Their most glaring problem was the offensive line: forcing really good players to work hard to get basic advances. Holes were far smaller than they should have been for runs, and pockets far too small.

Republican congresspeople aren’t the devil, Will. Neither are Democratic congresspeople.

DF, I missed this earlier. It’s built more on the old saying that “the devil hates to be laughed at” and the utter lack of a sense of humor on the right wing. I have no love for this ignorance though and if scorn helps it to die the death it needs to die for the best interests of the nation, then so be it.

Night Lizards. Vacation has come to an end. Tomorrow marks the beginning of a new work week. May you sleep well and may the Deity of your choice smile down upon you. On the bright side, I get to do it all over again the first week of July.

Reading the comments at the article was a mistake on my part. It’s already got a pretty bad derp infestation.

For most of them that’s the $500 in their checking account the day after they paid the rent.
