Meanwhile, Glenn Greenwald retweets this, because of course he does:

Uh… no. Disease came back to Pakistan because the Taliban banned vaccinations.

We can argue over whether it was smart to use a vaccination campaign as cover for the operation, but the ones responsible for Pakistanis not being vaccinated are the Taliban.

Thanks to a post by Skip Intro I now know that the Bundisti are now insisting on their right to loot cultural treasures and historic artifacts.

This gives me an idea: I can convert to sovereign citizenhood, go to Ohio, and help myself to the historic aircraft at the US Air Force Museum. I can prove I have ancestors who robbed Indians worked the land in Ohio before the US Air Force was created in 1947 (one year after the BLM). Besides, the words “air force” do not appear anywhere in the Constitution and the whole claim of federal ownership of these artifacts is therefore illegitimate.

Airplane buffs may enjoy this.
Looking through some old family photos on my hard drive and found this one of my father when he was in the Civil Air Patrol in 1946. (He’s not the guy identified as “Joe”, however. I’m thinking my mom, who was also in CAP at the time, may have had her eyes on another feller back in the day.)

I hate springtime. A couple of weeks ago it was ants invading my apartment. Yesterday, the mouse episode. About an hour ago there was a mighty buzzing coming from the living room window, which had attracted the attention of both feline overlords. I pulled open the shades and was greeted by a ginormous bee which has since been squooshed (ewww). Enough with the critters already.

And it’s raining so I can’t use my Saturday to practice taking pictures outside.

The joys of hashtag diplomacy
Russian Diplomat Twitter-Threatens to Fly a Bomber Into Romania

The ever-quotable Dmitry Rogozin, Russia’s deputy prime minister, did not take kindly to being banned from Romania’s airspace earlier today. On his way back from visiting the pro-Russian breakaway region Transdniestria in Moldova, Rogozin’s plane was reportedly turned away as it headed toward Moscow.

The head of the Military-Industrial Commission and special envoy of President Putin, Rogozin is currently being sanctioned by the United States and the European Union. After being barred, he threatened to return to Romania. On a bomber plane. Here was the tweet:

Upon US request, Romania has closed its airspace for my plane. Ukraine doesn’t allow me to pass through again. Next time I’ll fly on board TU-160.”

As Reuters pointed out “the supersonic Soviet-era TU-160 is Russia’s largest strategic bomber.”

75 Killgore Trout  May 10, 2014 1:05:58pm

The Romanian foreign ministry has asked for a clarification to Rogozin’s comments about the fighter plane, noting that it “believes the threat of using a Russian strategic bomber plane by a Russian deputy prime minister is a very grave statement under the current regional context.”

Rogozin responded

Just as a point of info, right now 2/5 Cav has deployed to Germany and drawn from the SEP there. Now, this was a planned exercise, not a response to Russia. But it’s there nonetheless, and it’s remarkably easy to extend such a deployment (as a few of us with experience can confirm.)

Russia’s (read; Putin) isn’t looking to get into an actual shooting war with NATO but seeing that Romania (and many other EU and non EU member nations in the region) get a goodly portion of their natural gas via Russia, (in Romanias case, it’s almost 30%) Putin is just tapping them on the shoulder and giving, them a little nudge saying “Hi,.,remember us? We’ve got a tornado on the ground a few miles south of here, with damage. Some kind of microclimate seems to send far more of them through that part of the county. Heading off to S. GA now.

Just looked outside and I’m seeing something I’ve never seen before: scud clouds that have mammatus formations.

Stay safe out there. We had a tornado watch on Thursday, although nothing appears to have come from it. That thunderstorm line was pretty wicked, though. The one coming in tonight looks relatively tame in comparison.

I was in Greater Cincinnati for that one April 3-4, 1974.
On April 3, I was driving my Honda Civic on US Route 50. When I got to the eastern turnoff to Sayler Park, Ohio, I saw the highway completely covered in tiny sticks. Went through the turn and drove smack into an F5, which picked up my car and carried me the entire length of the highway there and spit me out at the western end of Sayler Park at Addyston.
Not a scratch on my car but my psyche took a while to recover. That’s when I became a tornado chaser for the NWS.

Guess who just got soaked to the bone trying to protect her camera equipment? //

Two pink dogwood trees—a small one across the street, another bigger one at the end of the block. Rain stopped; nice light, but overcast & wind blowing hard:

1) Look through the kit lens; yuck; remove it and replace with 40mm prime.

2) Take a couple of shots, results not great.

3) Try throwing the camera in aperture priority then shutter priority mode, still not doing what I want, shutter speed too slow for the wind.

4) Put it in manual mode & bump the shutter speed up to 1/160; depth of field is a bit too shallow; step down from f2.8 to f3.2; better, but still not quite right.

5) Change white balance from “Auto” to “Cloudy”; much better; head down street to other tree as it has more blossoms.

6) Put the camera in “P” (Program, mostly automatic) mode and stop to shoot a picture of the cloudy gray sky.

7) Arrive at house down the block; take off shoes and step into people’s yard, hoping no one will get angry and start screaming at me; no one seems to mind; check camera settings; open aperture back up to f2.8 and snap photo; meh; move around to other side and try again; meh, composition no good; move…. *rumble, CRACK, plop, plop, plop*

8) The heavens open up and within seconds it’s coming down in buckets.

Luckily, I’d put on a (mostly) waterproof jacket because it has big pockets that I could put extra lenses in, so I jammed the camera under under it, made sure the pockets were closed well enough to keep the other lenses dry, then started walking back.

TL;DR: Got home; camera fine (even though I dropped it about 12 inches when I tried to set it down by the strap); amateur photographer soaked to the bone and beginning to wonder if there’s a conspiracy afoot. //

Naturally, it has stopped raining again. HA! Yeah, like I’m gonna fall for that one twice in one day. Hungry—gonna go dig through the fridge.

Blogger Jim Hoft uses Nigerian sex slave teens hashtag to LOL at non-sociopath’s concerns

Normally Hoft can be counted on to bring his special brand of seething white hot unfiltered racism to any discussion, but he’s really feeling his oats today because of his big non-scoop, so why not attribute the hashtag campaign to liberals instead of, you know, the families and activists in Nigeria who actually started it?

[omitted Hoftderp]

As pointed out above, “the left” didn’t start the campaign, but did join in helping to draw world-wide attention to plight of the kidnapped girls forcing the Nigerian government to accept help they had previously refused from the international community.

I asked the guy for some light lumber and anti-mosquito screen (‘scherma anti-Zingare’). Unfortunately ‘mosquito’ is ‘zinzare’ and ‘Zingare’ is ‘Gypsy’. Took a lot of pantomime to straighten that out.

Children used to follow me around the village to see what I’d say next.

Heh. That must have been amusing - and mildly awkward. Years ago, I was looking for a cigarette holder, because at the time, I was smoking unfiltereds. So I found out the word for it is “spička”. Unfortunately, I went into the tobacconist and asked if they had “píčka”, which is Czech slang for, shall we say, an intimate part of a woman’s anatomy.

Yeah….that was embarrassing.

(Hmmm. Need to look up etymology of cigarette holders.)

Stupid. This is how they came to that clickbait headline:

“Things got bad when the bin Laden incident happened,” Mohammad Ibrahim, a Taliban negotiator, said in a telephone interview. “The militants are not against the polio drive. The campaign is not being carried out because there is a war-like situation.”

By the way, Greenwald is going to be on the Stephen Colbert show Monday night.

Colbert will find ways to let Greenwald make an ass out of himself, it’s not hard to do.
