Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. #6, November 1968

After years as a grizzled veteran of various wars, in the late 1960s Sgt. Fury suddenly morphed into Nick Fury, Agent of SHIELD, and went in a decidedly science fictional direction. Issue #6 was published in November 1968, and featured this spectacular cover by the great Jim Steranko showing the Earth blowing up — something that, uh, didn’t actually happen in the comic but hey, it looks awesome.

It’s a good time for some Nick Fury comics, given the recent Captain America movie and the season finale of Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D. being on Tuesday.

The lovely Karen Black appears briefly in this video directed by Melodie McDaniel. Shot in 1994(?) It never aired. I hope Melodie doesn’t get pissed at me for posting this lo-fi dub of her rough cut now; it’s the only copy of this I have. Anyway, Karen Black tolerated my doofus “acting” and was charming the whole day. I will love her always.

The important thing about Sam isn’t that he’s gay. It’s that he’s OPENLY gay, thus breaking a barrier and forcing people to eventually accept something that was simply denied in the past. Only a moron would think there were never any gays in the NFL. But a door has been opened today that won’t be easy to close.

About a year later I lucked into a rental out in Montecito, up in Toro Canyon. Massively wealthy people land where everyone had a garages and nobody had ever felt the need to alarm a car. The birds were much more polite, everything was. Suddenly I was seeing deer, coyotes, even a big old bobcat, and they were all chill.

I also heard birds imitating that alarm in different cities around CA when I was doing the field research for my Master’s thesis. I had exotic birds for years, including a couple of Congo African Greys. When I had a monitored alarm installed, I laughed and told the installer that my boys would be imitating the beep-beep-beep sound of the exterior doors being opened within a day. The guy gave me a “yeah, right”. I did err on the timeline. Bogart, my sound effects kid, had it down before the installers even left, giving them fits trying to figure out why the system kept beeping even though no doors were opened. LOL

Made for fun late nights when I’d hear the beeps - was that Bogart or an intruder? After a few nervous excursions through the house in the middle of the night with a baseball bat, I realized that my dogs could detect the difference, even though I couldn’t. If they didn’t react, I knew I could go back to sleep after a “go to sleep, Bogie!”

Circular firing squad in the Party of God:

GOP leader attacks Nevada Republicans over gay, abortion approaches

[…]

McLarty also is chairwoman of the RNC’s Conservative Steering Committee and Resolutions Committee. In her email, she slammed Nevada’s actions and urged party leaders not to allow other state parties to take similar actions, including during Alaska’s upcoming convention.

“The Nevada GOP action to remove marriage and life from their platform is a disgrace,” McLarty wrote. “The move does nothing to unify the Republican Party. Republicans will continue to lose elections if we can’t even stand for protecting the most vulnerable lives among us; or for keeping sacred five thousand plus years of natural human sexuality. Both are direct attacks on God and the family.”

Further, McLarty accused the Nevada GOP of working to ruin the party.

They are symptoms of the infiltration of the Republican Party by those who really want to destroy it,” McLarty wrote.

The Nevada GOP struck back in its letter to fellow Republicans.

“We disagree with Committeewoman McLarty where she said ‘They are symptoms of the infiltration of the Republican Party by those who really want to destroy it,’” the Nevada letter said. “The committeewoman has no right to judge the actions of the Nevada delegation, or insinuate that our delegates are insurgents when they have a long history of being active in our party. The actions of our delegates were far from ‘disgraceful’ or ‘insidious,’ and we find her judgment of our delegation wholly inappropriate.”

[…]

When I read this bit:

“They are symptoms of the infiltration of the Republican Party by those who really want to destroy it,” McLarty wrote.

I had to make sure it said “McLarty” and not “McCarthy”

I think you’re almost certainly right about that. I can’t imagine much negative mainstream media coverage, which should make other gay players feel comfortable coming out in the future.

Then we can get back to a more important question for the league. What the hell do they do about the epidemic of brain damage that they’ve finally admitted (sort of) is part of their sport?

I love football. Some of the most painful memories of my childhood involve the Houston Oilers finding a way each season to fuck things up. Even worse, we had to live in the shadow of the Dallas Cowboys “America’s Team” bullshit.

And I’ve watched every second of every SB since 1973 (Dolphins!), and can rattle off the winners and losers from each. But the thought of 26 year olds with CTE (irreversible brain atrophy due to repeated head collisions) gives me some pause about the future of the sport. It’s gonna have to change somewhat, hopefully in a way that doesn’t reduce the “good” brutality of the game, which let’s be honest is a big part of football’s excitement, while minimizing the “bad” brutality.

More from the Party of God:

Bobby Jindal talks about [H]is religious conversion, attacks on Christianity in speech at Liberty University

Gov. Bobby Jindal covered everything from his Catholic conversion as a teenager to high-profile battles over birth control and same-sex marriage in a commencement speech he gave Saturday (May 10) at Liberty University, the conservative Christian college founded by the late televangelist Jerry Falwell in Lynchburg, Virginia.

“Today the American people, whether they know it or not, are mired in a silent war. … It is a war — a silent war — against religious liberty,” said Jindal, who spent much of the speech attacking President Barack Obama and the federal government.

Liberty is an important stop for Republicans seeking the White House who need to court the evangelical Christian vote. Most Republican presidential candidates over the last three decades, including John McCain and Mitt Romney, have visited the university for a high-profile speech during their national campaigns.

They are exquisite and incredibly intelligent. Fun and fascinating to be around, though they can spout off at interesting times. We had my husband’s new boss and his wife over for dinner one evening and hubby’s boss was quite intrigued with our feathered family members. He stopped in front of Boui’s cage (Congo Grey I raised from a fledgling), talking nonsense baby-talk to get him to talk to him. Boui talked, alright. He called my husband’s boss a shithead and told him to scram. My husband I were rather horrified but fighting to keep from cracking up at the same time.

Fortunately, the boss and his wife thought it was hilarious as well. In fact, the guy wanted that bird BAD. The rest of the evening he offered us more and more money for the kid so he could have him guard his office.

The governor then went on to say he supports David and Jason Benham, Liberty University graduates who recently lost an opportunity to have their own television show on HGTV after making controversial remarks about homosexuality and abortion.

For those not keeping up with the bigot-of-the-day award, on Tues. RWW ran this story:

then two days later dug up more video:

HGTV decided these guys wouldn’t make a good product for their network.

I don’t recall there being much talk here about this, but Jindal evidently picked up on it.

Boston had a long dry spell, especially in baseball of course. But the last decade in all FOUR Beantown pro team sports makes up for that. Those of us from crappy sports towns like Houston will never experience a stretch of championships like that. Maybe I should have stayed in Boston.

True, the Oilers had some success in the AFL, in the early 60’s. But even the hapless Browns won a championship back then.

But after that, Oilers either sucked or found creative ways to lose. The worst was the 1991 playoff game against the Bills. Oilers were up 35-3 in the 2nd half, then found a way to lose. It was the biggest 2nd half collapse in NFL history, playoffs or regular season. That soured the fans on the team so much that there was barely any outrage when they moved to Tennessee.

But until the Larry Bird era, Boston was never a basketball town. Meanwhile, in the six team NHL, the Bruins would come in 5th or 6th year after year and sellout almost every game

I was living in Houston when that game happened. Watched it happen, too. I knew people who had turned the game off at halftime figuring it was a done deal only to find out the team lost later. Man, they were pissed.

I mean, people hated Bud Adams to begin with because he was an asshole. The Oilers losing that game just made it worse. By the time it got to the point where he threatened to move the team if he didn’t get money for additional renovations to the Astrodome, people were offering to help them pack up and leave.

Je$u$’ pain doctor in the news again:

Pain and gain: An Alabama clinic stands out amid data on Medicare payments

Nearly 20 patients packed the waiting lobby of the Alabama Pain Center before 10 a.m. on a warm April day. Crosses and biblical passages adorned the walls. In a hallway, a painting titled “The Great Physician” depicted Jesus assisting a doctor in the operating room.

Afflicted by pain from spinal injuries, botched surgeries or rare nerve conditions, patients from Tennessee, Georgia and Florida have flocked across state lines to see K. Dean Willis, a tanned anesthesiologist with salt-and-pepper hair who says he is among the top 30 experts on the use of pain pumps.

[…]

Nationwide, about $4 out of the $299 in total drug treatments by doctors per Medicare beneficiary is spent on unclassified drug injections. In Huntsville, the amount spent is $152 per enrollee — 38 times the national average — out of $766 in total drug treatments.

About 98 percent of the $11.4 million in Medicare’s payments for unclassified injections in Huntsville went to three doctors, all at the Alabama Pain Center: O. Jameson Stokes, Norman McCoomer and Willis were responsible for reimbursements in the amounts of $5.7 million, $3.3 million and $2.2 million, respectively, in 2012 and ranked first, second and third in the nation for Medicare payments for unclassified injections.

[…]

Last spring, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama, the largest private insurer in the state, accused the center of “fraudulent billing practices” in a court filing, claiming that among other things it charged $19,200 for one drug that should have cost $451. The center disputes the allegations.

[…]

Willis’s Christian convictions have become a hallmark of the clinic. A former employee successfully sued him in 2006 for more than $100,000 in damages for religious discrimination after she refused to attend his morning prayer meetings and was terminated. At the time, the center said she was fired for poor job performance.

The logo of the Alabama Pain Center, which is emblazoned on Willis’s scrubs, features a cross.

[…]

“Jesus” is as much a marketing slogan as anything else. But what stood out to me more was that 42% of the patients at the clinic relied on Medicare to pay the bills.

The reality is the a great number of people in the hard-right GOP dominated regions of this country depend upon payments from the US government, in one form or another.

But the last decade in all FOUR Beantown pro team sports makes up for that

you’ve got that right

But until the Larry Bird era, Boston was never a basketball town. Even when the Celtics were winning championship after championship with the likes of Bill Russell et al, they rarely sold out the Boston Garden. Meanwhile, in the six team NHL, the Bruins would come in 5th or 6th year after year and sellout almost every game

When I was a kid, in the early 70’s, NBA Finals night games weren’t even televised live. Instead, we saw replays of the games after the late local news. It’s amazing, but Bird, Magic and MJ moved the league from 2nd tier to one of the most popular leagues worldwide now.

Back in the 60’s I used to go to the Boston Garden and watch an NBA DOUBLEHEADER in the afternoon (they would have, lets say the Knicks playing the Cincy Royals followed by the Celtics against the 76rs) and they STILL couldn’t sell out

Then we would hide in the bathrooms as they cleaned the Garden, took up the floor, and we’d watch the Bruins get their ass kicked BUT to a sellout crowd

Is the FBI investigating if BLM or Metro PD threatened or pointed guns at the citizens who supported bundy? Do they plan to charge BLM and Metro PD officers for pointing weapons at Citizens? if not then they can suck a fart out of my ass. The wrong questions are being asked here. Instead of the gov asking, “How can we find the people and punish them for exercising their constitutional rights?”
They should be asking, “What did we do or how did we handle this so poorly and anger people so badly that it forced them to take up arms against us?”

More proof our government has stopped working for its people and more for it’s agendas.

I was watching the draft on NFL Network and they had a feature on Sam. I loved what one of his teammates said and this is why I’m so proud of my generation and will defend us against people who complain about us. The guy basically said that if a bunch of 17-21 year old college kids can accept Sam for who he is, there’s no reason why grown adults being paid to play the game of football should not and how he described Sam coming out reminded me of how a gay friend of mine disclosed he was gay to me. It was nothing dramatic, just I’m gay and this is who I am.

I saw some of the comments at ESPN were going off about ESPN showing Sam and his partner receiving the call from the RAMS. They were saying they didn’t want their kids seeing that two guys kissing stuff, and holding and hugging, etc.

Of course I find that strange in a way. How many kids watch the very very end of the 7th round of the NFL draft???

I figure the guys complaining were probably having the problems. If any young kids were around they probably didn’t really care.

I did have ESPN on when it was coming to the end as I was just waiting for them do to a review of the days rounds. Right before Sam got the pick, ESPN was already heading for “If Michael Sam Doesn’t Get Drafted, What Does it All Mean(?)” mode. They were then launching into names of other players that made it in the NFL as never-drafted free agents.

They were prepared to turn the story what ever way it went. Ahhh…modern media. ESPN is a machine.

Yeah no one except die hards watches the seventh round but as for kids. I think they’d be shocked at how their own kids are probably more open minded than they are. Like I will concede that my 13 year old brother is definitely more progressive minded on gay people than I was at that age. Which is precisely why so many people are dead set against things like the science of AGW, Tesla cars, or any sort of alternate energy. It’s in their interest to get people back into slavery so they can pad their profit margins.

You wouldn’t get 200 people to sign it, and 190 of those would cheat, and I’m not counting the 10 that would still be using it at work.

If we don’t get our energy act together, human slavery will return to the norm.

We’ll just call it something like Third Tier Employment.

Back in the 70’s, the Rockets would occasionally have a game with attendance under 1,000. It was funny and embarrassing. But you could pretty much sit anywhere you wanted to, it just didn’t feel like a pro sporting event.

It’s one of the conundrums of our political psyche that the preppers/survivalists/catastrophists are right wing. If the Left truly believes in AGW’s inevitable impact, why aren’t we planning defensible University States?

Too beefy for my taste, the boyfriend is more my type. If I was choosing from amongst Olympic athletes, divers and gymnasts would be where I’d look first. Then the distance runners.

Figure skaters:)

I’ve been thinking we might be due for an anti-technology counterculture movement.

I’ll sign it, but only if it’ll read my RFID chip from my living room…right this second.

Saw some video of the LA Auto Show. They were showing some of the many ‘green’ cars coming out in ‘15. BMW seems to be getting into small engine/electric motor combos. They showed the i8 and a small commuter cute ute i3. The video covered a whole bunch of makes. Hyundai had several new ones too. Showed some Audis, Nissans, etc.

That market is gonna pop. And with it, people will find they might just like them.

I am a huge racing fan, and there are rumblings about ‘green’ racing. I understand that. I love a good engine note like the next guy. But if green cars take a big part of the market, and save energy, then maybe there can still be the allowance of more and more efficient internal combustion engines running on bio type fuels.

Just need to keep funding all the science. That is why we do not need the anti-science stupidity. Yes, even the damn Koch brothers are free to do some good. Hopefully while they dick around out front, even those guys are smart enough to be doing research for new energy.

Hopefully.

Are you saying “Gus” is short for stinky pee?

DF - the “Good luck with your asparagus” is from the last time Holder dealt with Gohmert, who was so tongue tied he said, “I will not allow you to cast aspersions on my asparagus!”

(sorry…just remembered the full quote)

There are those who are hoping for that return to slavery. Or at least a return of feudalism.

Shrug. Eurovision 1974 was won with a little ditty called “Waterloo” by this unknown Swedish band named ABBA. I’ll wait on which is the greater abomination … ////////// ;)

Chiquita is a stunner! And the song is really lovely, especially if you are into James Bond theme music. It is a grand ballad, but sung with a lot of passion and nerve. I loved it and was holding my thumbs for it last night.

Ah, not Chiquita, of course. His name is Conchita.
