Larry Wilmore Tapped To Replace Stephen Colbert

“The Daily Show’s” Larry Wilmore will host a new show called “The Minority Report with Larry Wilmore” in the 11:30 p.m. Monday to Thursday timeslot currently held by Colbert, according to Variety. Colbert is leaving the network to take over the “Late Show” on CBS next year.

“The Minority Report” will premier in January, and promises to “offer a comedic look at news, current events and pop culture from unique perspectives not typically on display in late night television,” according to Variety Jon Stewart will serve with Wilmore as an executive producer.

Help please. Everyone here knows more about computers than I do. So please explain what just happened to me.

I was commenting on CBS St. Louis site, under my second Facebook name. After making a bunch of comments, someone “hijacked” my username and started commenting. Suddenly comments started popping up with my Facebook photo and name, but they weren’t my comments. So someone is screwing with me. Is this anything to be concerned about, or just typical comment section hijinks?

Could the person who started posting as me get access to my personal info? Do I need to start changing passwords and other shit?

I’d first check if it links to your account, and not to one with the same name and image. If it does links to your account, that’s a huge security issue from Facebook.

Thanks.

When I clicked on the fake me, I got different data about the number of comments, etc, from the real me. So there were two commenters named “Joe XYZ” with the same photo, but different info attached to each. One was me, the other was the dickhead who stole me. Does that even make any sense?

A sober assessment of the “voting” in Donetsk and Luhansk districts.

Ukraine rebels hold referendums in Donetsk and Luhansk

bbc.com

(snip)

“One pro-Ukrainian head teacher told the BBC she was receiving death threats after having refused to let the rebels use her school as a polling station.

“There is only one question on the ballot papers, in both Ukrainian and Russian: “Do you support the act of state self-rule of the Donetsk People’s Republic/Luhansk People’s Republic?”

“The BBC’s Piers Scholfield, in Donetsk, says the voting process appears haphazard. There are voters’ lists in polling stations, but anyone can vote in any polling station. ” More

The vote is being held in spite of Putin’s [fake] request to postpone it.

ETA: Excellent map in this piece showing the 2 large provinces Russia could gain by this pseudo-vote, illegal act made to look “legit”, by making it a referendum of “the people”. Self-rule, my ass.

29 Justanotherhuman  May 11, 2014 1:38:05am

State Dept response to illegal Donestsk/Luhansk referenda.

“On May 10, 2014, State Department Spokesperson Jen Psaki issued the following statement on the illegal referenda in eastern Ukraine:

“As the United States has said, the referenda being planned for May 11 in portions of eastern Ukraine by armed separatist groups are illegal under Ukrainian law and are an attempt to create further division and disorder. If these referenda go forward, they will violate international law and the territorial integrity of Ukraine. The United States will not recognize the results of these illegal referenda.

“In addition, we are disappointed that the Russian government has not used its influence to forestall these referenda since President Putin’s suggestion on May 7 that they be postponed, when he also claimed that Russian forces were pulling back from the Ukrainian border.” More

re: #35 Sergey Romanov

Hey Сергей,

How popular would you say Putin is in Russia right now? I heard 80%, disappointing but I was willing to accept it at face value until the true nature of the Crimean vote was revealed. Now I’m wondering if that number isn’t juiced a bit too.

On the other hand Bush was at 90% plus here in the US after the 9/11 attacks, so I know first hand how well jingoism sells in the right environment.

I guess I’m trying to get an inside perspective of how effective Putin’s state control over media, especially TV has been.

There’s a few other questions I have, about how sanctions and the current economic situation play into support for the government, etc.

39 goddamnedfrank  May 11, 2014 2:53:01am

re: #37 Sergey Romanov

Surely she understands it was just a trick? “See, I had nothing to do with that!”

This is the kind of thing that’s rather infuriating to see, the way Putin is sacrificing the ability of future Russian governments to be taken at their word. He’s not just sacrificing his own integrity. This kind of “trick” isn’t just cynical, it comes at a serious price.

I seriously wonder what he and his supporters think they’ve gained by unilaterally abrogating a signed and ratified treaty to ensure Ukraine’s territorial integrity. Because as a result it’s going to take a hell of a long time before any sane country trusts the Russian government again.

re: #38 goddamnedfrank

I’m not in Russia right now, but by what I can gather through my daily reading of assorted blogs, tweets etc., Putin has won over - at least temporarily - quite a lot those previously opposed to him, if only because they had critiqued him “from the right” (IYKWIM). I would suggest that the support between 70 and 80 is about right - but that’s still a guess. Certainly jingoism has won the day.

JFYI, that WP piece is flawed - nothing was taken down, the report is still there at president-sovet.ru
Also to be kept in mind is that this is not an official report of this body, rather a “personal” report of a couple of its more liberal members (think a senator releasing a report and reading it into the Congress record). This is not to say that the so-called referendum was not a sham or that this report doesn’t hold any value, on the contrary, but the things above need to be kept in mind (i.e., it’s not slam dunk by itself).

re: #38 goddamnedfrank

The control of the media is total, for all practical purposes. There are still independent media, but of course they can’t compete with the bulldozer of the so-called “federal channels”, where most of the Russians get their daily news from. You must have heard about the crackdown on the Dozhd’ channel as well as on lenta.ru (which I used to read daily until it became but a mere empty shell of its former self).

Later I will have more to say on the purely Goebbelsian propaganda the state media are churning out without interruption.

Can’t say what Putin thinks, but his supporters see him as breaking the “American NWO”, so breaking of old treaties is rather a welcome sign for them than anything negative.

Surely she understands it was just a trick? “See, I had nothing to do with that!”

Oh sure, she understands it’s just a trick, but, diplomacy doesn’t allow her to be as direct as we can be.

If Putin can pretend that his annexation of Donetsk and Luhanska (and perhaps even Kharkiv at a future date) are legitimately done “by the People”, he’ll have accomplished his takeover of eastern Ukraine w/o a lot of bloodshed and little Ukrainian resistance. The Kiev govt is still not solid enough to be effective in rallying Ukraine’s citizens to resistance to Russian influence and interference, and possible, annexation of eastern Ukraine and Putin knows this.

Not to mention that Yanuk wants back in.

47 Justanotherhuman  May 11, 2014 5:15:37am

Every day is Mother’s Day when you’re a mother.

And yes, I’d find this pretty sexist. I just want a restaurant that doesn’t serve junk and pretend it’s food and which makes assumptions about women, such as we don’t tip well. I always tip 20%, regardless in a “sit-down” restaurant where I’m served by wait staff, but then, I don’t eat out a lot, either. I cook but don’t have much money, so I have high standards and try to choose carefully.

bbc.com

“Restaurants, it seems, have figured out that women eat food.

“At least that’s one explanation for the proliferation of “female-friendly” restaurants such as the steakhouse chains STK and SHe, and the Washington DC area sports bar the Bracket Room.

(snip)

“SHe, for instance, features “smaller, ‘she-sized’ steak portions, mirrors on the dessert menus so women could reapply their lipstick and ‘sexy’ decor”.” More

Luckily, I’d probably never go into any of those restaurants.

PRESS RELEASE
Statement by Russian MFA Spokesman Andrei Nesterenko in Connection with Completion of Antiterrorist Operation in Sri Lanka

782-19-05-2009

Moscow welcomes reports of the completion by Sri Lankan authorities of their operation against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) extremist organization, resulting in government forces restoring control over the entire territory of the country and freeing civilians held by LTTE as a “human shield.”
The Russian side supports the fight of the Sri Lankan government against terrorism and separatism and for state sovereignty and territorial integrity. We hope that the end to the bloody armed conflict that lasted in Sri Lanka for more than a quarter century will be a guarantee of the establishment of an enduring peace, security and stability in the country.
Moscow wishes the government and people of friendly Sri Lanka success in rapidly overcoming the consequences of the conflict and in achieving economic and social progress based on consensus among and respect for the rights of all the ethnic and religious groups inhabiting it.
Russia reiterates its readiness to strengthen further its cooperation with Sri Lanka both in a bilateral format and in regional and international organizations on counterterrorism and on other themes of mutual concern.

Voters Reportedly Allowed to Cast Ballots on Others’ Behalfs
11:41 (GMT)

Ukrainska Pravda reports on voters in today’s referendum being allowed to vote “for their neighbour and their wife” (translation by The Interpreter):

At polling stations, where the voting in the pseudo-referendum on the status of the Lugansk region is under way, you can vote for two people at once.

This is reported by a correspondent for 0642 on the scene.

According to them, the situation is calm at the moment, people keep coming up.

Notably, one can vote on behalf of people who are unable to come to the polling station.

One need only show one’s passport. Such incidents have already been observed.

Furthermore, Novosti Donbassa reports that a journalist, as an experiment, voted at 4 polling stations “for their neighbour and their wife”.

[Translation: In Donetsk the “referendum” is underway. A journalist for ND voted at four polling stations “for their neighbour and their wife”]

The publication also reports that anyone can bring an unlimited number of ballots with them.

[Translation: Separatist “referendum” in Donetsk: anyone can bring an unlimited number of ballots with them. even citizens of Honduras can vote.]

Exclusive: Iran’s illicit procurement appears to slow amid nuclear talks - U.N. experts
The key word in the title is “appears”.

The U.N. Panel of Experts, who monitor compliance with the Security Council’s sanctions regime on Iran, presented this conclusion cautiously, suggesting it was also possible Tehran has simply learned to outsmart security and intelligence services in its pursuit of sensitive components and materials.

Snowden’s treasure trove of intel could be helpful in efforts to avoid detection.
But there’s no slowdown in Iran’s support for global terrorism

the report made clear that the panel had registered no change in Iranian actions to dodge a U.N. arms embargo, especially in its weapons supplies to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in his war with rebels trying to oust him.

“Member states and the media continue to report arms transfers from Iran, including to Syria, Gaza, Sudan, and Bahrain,” the U.N. report said.

No surprise here: 2 Yemenis Shot by Americans Are Linked to Qaeda Cell

While much about the encounter remains unclear, a Yemeni official said Saturday that the two Yemeni assailants were part of a cell linked to Al Qaeda that had planned and executed several attacks on foreigners in the country. Whether by design or chance, the official said, the Americans had apparently disrupted a kidnapping ring that government officials blame for killing a Frenchman last week, kidnapping a Dutch couple last year, trying to assassinate a German diplomat last month, and attacking the central prison here in February, freeing 19 inmates.

The shooting at the barbershop led Yemeni authorities to the group’s leader, Wael Abdullah al-Waeli, said an Interior Ministry spokesman, Col. Mohamed al-Qaidi. Yemeni officials said that they killed Mr. Waeli last Wednesday during a shootout in the capital. The State Department announced Wednesday that it had closed its embassy here to the public because of security concerns.

Boko Haram’s Bin Laden Connection

In 2002, Osama bin Laden dispatched an aide to Nigeria to hand out $3 million in local currency to a wide array of Salafist political organizations there that shared al Qaeda’s goal of imposing Islamic rule.

According to an overlooked report from a well-respected international watchdog, one of those organizations was Boko Haram, the terrorist outfit that’s become globally infamous for its threat to sell girls into slavery. In other words, bin Laden helped provide Boko Haram’s seed money, this report maintains.

I think what’s instructive with all of this is the juvenile approach many Americans take with guns.

For example: these Bundy worshippers simply think that once they’ve decided someone is an “enemy”, they’re free to point their weapons at anyone they please.

And then are shocked when there are consequences for their actions.

Yum, fried turkey liver on a triscuit! Surprisingly, no one else wants any, even the dogs! More for me.

A couple of photos of the neighborhood were I live.

To the NE

An American acquaintance saw my neighborhood on a recent visit and was under the initial impression is was something like Cabrini Green. I gave her a funny look and started whistling the theme to “Good Times”, but I’m pretty sure she was too young to get the joke.

Turkey: motion in Parliament for Hagia Sophia mosque

A lawmaker, Hami Yildrim, who recently left the AKP party of Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has recently presented a motion to turn Istanbul’s famous Hagia Sophia Byzantine basilica into a mosque, Huurriyet online reports.
The initiative of the deputy, who is considered close to the Islamic brotherhood of preacher Fetullah Gulen - a former ally who has become a political foe of the Turkish premier - is the latest move in an ongoing campaign to turn the worldwide Christian symbol into a mosque.

Pardon my cynicism, but I’m filing this recounting under “fiction”.

Glenn Greenwald: the explosive day we revealed Edward Snowden’s identity to the world

“In the hours after his name became known, the entire world was searching for the NSA whistleblower, and it became vital that his whereabouts in Hong Kong remained secret. In an extract from a new book, No Place to Hide, Glenn Greenwald recalls the dramatic events surrounding the moment Snowden revealed himself in June 2013”

theguardian.com

“I thought about flying home via New York and stopping for one day to do interviews - just to make the point that I could and would. But I was advised by a lawyer against doing so, arguing that it made little sense to take legal risks of that sort until we knew how the government planned to react. “You’ve just enabled the biggest national security leak in US history and gone all over TV with the most defiant message possible,” he said. “It will only make sense to plan a trip to the US once we get a sense of the Justice Department’s response.”

“I didn’t agree: I thought it was unlikely in the extreme that the Obama administration would arrest a journalist in the middle of such high-profile reporting. But I was too drained to argue or take the risk. So I had the Guardian book my flight back to Rio through Dubai, nowhere near the US. For the moment, I reasoned, I had done enough.”

Google translation from Ukrainian and Russian. Don’t know why it turned out in both languages.

“This is loss of human life in Krasnoarmej. Just people stood in the captured city council natsgvardiey.”

ETA: OK, I figured out that the Russians are trying to blame the Ukrainian Natl Guard for shooting civilians in Krasnoarmeysk in eastern Ukraine.

See: rt.com

“I just saw the National Guard kill one and injure several others,” Russian journalist Ilya Azar wrote in his micro-blog. Later this was confirmed by Denis Pushilin, the co-chairman of the self-proclaimed People’s Donetsk Republic. “

Right. And WTF were Russians doing there?

Azar is a reliable liberal journalist hated by the Putinists. If he says so, I’ll trust him on this.

I doubt very much that there was no resistance to the Natl Guard, though, who might have felt threatened (because we know many of the “rebels” are armed to the teeth). Hopefully, there will be an outside inquiry into this. Meanwhile,
