Nigeria Accepts Israel’s Offer to Help Find Kidnapped Girls

The Nigerian government announced today they will accept Israel’s offer of assistance to find the young girls kidnapped by the Boko Haram cavemen.

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has accepted an Israeli offer to assist in the efforts to find hundreds of schoolgirls who were kidnapped by the extremist Islamist group Boko Haram, AFP reported.

The offer was made on Sunday by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who spoke with Jonathan by phone. “Israel expresses deep shock at the crime against the girls,” Netanyahu told the Nigerian president, according to the prime minister’s bureau. “We are ready to help in finding the girls and fighting the cruel terrorism inflicted on you.”

A statement from the Nigerian president’s office in Lagos later on Sunday said that Jonathan had “briefed Mr Netanyahu on actions already being taken by Nigeria’s armed forces and security agencies to locate and rescue the girls, saying that Nigeria would be pleased to have Israel’s globally acknowledged anti-terrorism expertise deployed to support its ongoing operations.”

France’s Hollande calls for African summit

French president Francois Hollande is calling for a summit in Paris on security in west Africa focusing on the Islamist sect Boko Haram which has abducted more than 200 schoolgirls in Nigeria.

‘I suggested, with Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan, a meeting of Nigeria’s neighbouring countries,’ he said during a Sunday visit to the Azerbaijan capital Baku.

The meeting will take place [next] Saturday ‘if the countries agree’, he added.

The leaders of at least five African nations - Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon, Niger and Benin -may take part, a source close to the president said.

The Israelis are probably the best in the world with hostage rescue. If this does end up with and actual rescue attempt , and not a ransom payment, I can’t think of anyone more qualified than the Israelis.

That might be best for the families, but a liability in the longer fight. The fact that the two nations are talking about it in public makes it seem like a ploy, not a serious operation.

I disagree. Best to make a maximum effort, even if for a short while and make it plain to the rank and file of Boko Haram just how bad fighting competent special forces is for the ordinary members of a terrorist organization. The resulting demoralization may go further than the enemy’s propaganda. This goes double if Western forces are able to inflict heavy losses on the terrorists during any rescue operation.

Islamists already hate Israel, it’s not really possible for them to hate Israel anymore. Direct military involvement would also be politically much easier for the Israelis than anyone else. They’d be in and out without political grandstanding and bureaucratic delays.

It’s an offer that makes Israel look good, but accepting that help would come with immense political penalties and encourage Boko Haram and their allies hugely. Being able to paint themselves as literally fighting Israel would be great for them, being able to paint the Kenyan government as working with Israel would be great for them, too.

This discussion means the grandstanding has already started. My fear isn’t that they will hate Israel more, but that they will use it to spread hate of the Nigerian government for selling out both Islam and African independence.

Exactly. This kind of stuff is (thank god) rare and stochastic. Calling anyone the ‘best’ at it is fatuous.

The biggest reason I see to give Israel a lot of credit for this move, despite the political problems it obviously causes for Kenya, is if this goes bad, if this fucks up, Israel will take an inordinate amount of the blame, and they know that.

I don’t have a problem with it. It emphasizes the idea that these kids are not Boko Haram’s, but “belong” to the rest of the world, especially their family and friends. I doubt FLOTUS was suggesting the girls “belong” to the USA, or should somehow be granted asylum here.

It’s also a way to show solidarity with Nigeria and the girls’ loved ones.

That debate was going on while I was sleeping, so I couldn’t throw in my two cents then. I’ll do it now.

Suggesting that the love and/or admiration of guns needs to be shared more widely is reminiscent of bringing people to Jesus. It’s got the same kind of “everyone needs to do this” vibe. The adoration some Americans have for their firearms really comes off as a kind of religious faith.

Sadly at some points the time must be spent putting some things right, or the permit process for shooting ranges to operate becomes an impossibility. The critics were responsible in no small part for the bans that were struck down. IMHO rightly so. Or the criminalization of harmless bits of gun related items.

How stupid was it to have a law in the way of David Gregory showing off a high capacity magazine to make a point about the problem? Selectively I guess would be the thing.

Mexico: Zetas founder among 6 dead in shootout

MEXICO CITY (AP) - A security official in Mexico says one of the military deserters who helped found the gang that grew into the brutal Zetas cartel was among six people killed during a gunbattle in a border town Friday.

The official said authorities confirmed that Galindo Mellado Cruz was one of five gunmen who died in a shootout that also killed a Mexican soldier in Reynosa, which is across from McAllen, Texas.

76 Kragar  May 11, 2014 8:25:35pm

GFI’s report, published on Monday, said most of the funds are lost through multinational companies illegal misinvoicing the value of imported or exported goods. It means that importers pretend to pay more for goods than they actually pay and the extra money is slipped into offshore bank accounts. In one notable case an American company invoiced for plastic buckets at $972 each.

“We are talking about a huge drainage out of these countries,” GFI president Raymond Baker said: “People are making millions and millions at the expenses of the world’s poorest people.”

Baker said virtually all household name companies dealing in Africa have used the scheme, which he said is effectively “stealing from African governments”.

20 unsecured guns found in house where toddler shot

“…Sharina Marion told a detective she wasn’t aware that there were unsecured guns in the home and indicated she believed the gun safe was locked. The family said the pistol in the shooting was usually kept atop a kitchen cupboard, out of reach of the couple’s children, and said it must have fallen.

The Marions told detectives they taught their children, ages 3, 7, 9 and 10, firearms safety, and that they knew the guns were for protection and only to be accessed in an emergency with parental approval. They said all the children had fired guns, including the 3 year old, on a “church shoot” the day before the incident with several members of their church. The toddler pulled the trigger but did not handle the gun alone, according his parents.

One of the couple’s four children told detectives he knew the safe was not locked; another said his father “did not remember the combination to the safe.”
