Elizabeth Warren Reads the Riot Act to the House GOP

A new low
Politics • Views: 29,388

Elizabeth Warren takes the Republican Party and Trey Gowdy and their ludicrous Benghazi investigation to the woodshed.

As a Senator, I take oversight seriously because it is powerfully important. But Trey Gowdy gives oversight a bad name. The House GOP is on a waste-of-time-and-resources witch hunt and fundraising sideshow, shamefully grasping for any straw to make President Obama, former Secretary Clinton, or Secretary Kerry look bad. This stunt does a disservice to those who serve our country abroad, and it distracts us from issues we should be taking up on behalf of the American people.

With millions of people still out of work and millions more working full time yet still living below the poverty line, with students drowning in debt, with roads and bridges crumbling, is this really what the House Republicans are choosing to spend their time on? Even for guys who have so few solutions to offer that they have voted 54 times to repeal Obamacare, this is a new low.

Read the whole thing, because it’s rare to see a politician lay it on the line like this.

She’s right and I expect some lame response by the usual suspects about her being a staunch liberal as if that has anything to do with her point.

I sure hope we hear that kind of clarity and candor from the next Dem candidate for President and any or all of the legislative seats that are up. That and we need more objective news sources.

Chinese clothing designers have this curious habit of splashing random English words as some kind of fashion statement. I am sure they give little thought as to meaning. My first year teaching here I had to gently tell a freshman girl that having the phrase “I am your whore” on her left breast pocket was perhaps not the kind of sentiment she wanted to advertise.

Since many American companies have their T-shirts printed in China, I also see many T-shirts advertising obscure firms in KC, Iowa City and other cities. My friend bought one yesterday that says “Continual pleasure/National Refrigeration Service/North every-day.”

Excellent story on the “elections” yesterday in Donetsk and Luhansk, Ukraine.

46 Justanotherhuman  May 12, 2014 1:56:07am

Seems a lot of people didn’t understand what the referendum they were voting on meant at all.

Anyone notice the word “confederation” used by one commenter in the story?

Those ballots were pretty meaningless if people thought they were voting “yes” for one of several outcomes, including outright secession from Ukraine with independent rule, to continue being a part of Ukraine with self-rule, or becoming independent with a future view to being absorbed by Russia.

But no one seemed to actually know for sure what the “yes” vote meant.

re: #47 wheat-doggha — oo bird outside my window

It’s whatever the pro-Russian side says it means.

Yes, all the deliberate confusion and this joke of a “referendum” meant exactly that.

Say, haven’t we seen the same kind of thing here in the US? For example, CA Prop 8? These are the kind of referenda designed to jump over and eliminate the rights of those protected under the Constitution by a seemingly legitimate vote of the “majority”. We’ve seen plenty of those originated by the “usual suspects”, and there were a ton of them during the earlier days of civil rights legislation, not to mention recent threats of “secession” by the same reactionaries since the 2008 election.

Why do some Christians believe that at every single public event they must bear witness that they are Christian? Making such displays part of a cheerleading routine, to me, just demeans a rather serious message.

The disciples did not go around Galilee jumping up and down in short skirts. yelling, “Yay! God! Gimme a J, gimme an E …!”

Though, it would make for an interesting church service.

So I called the Roadside Assistance and told them to send a tow truck to the house and take the vehicle to the dealership. I may have to buy a new tire.

Meanwhile I took Zedushka’s (my old) car to work.

If Detroit roads are like I remember the last time I was up there (late 90s) I can see that happening. Heck, you’re lucky you didn’t lose the whole car in one.

Chances are though, you might just have some kind of a piece of hardware that punctured the tread and it slow leaked to a flat. If it is in the tread they can plug it and patch it from inside.

If you hit a pot hole it would break the tire bead or tear out the sidewall and you would have lost air almost immediately. You would have known that before you got very far. And, most cars have the tire pressure indicators that flash on your dash. If you didn’t see that it too is an indication of a slow leak.

Good luck!

re: #73 Dark_Falcon

Well, at least the car was already scheduled for service.

I think mine is ready for service, too. The dreaded check engine light is on again, so I had the guy at the Advance store put his little code checker on it. He said there’s a vacuum leak somewhere. Well, I’ve noticed 2 things—the A/C isn’t putting out cold air, and there’s a slight “stutter” in acceleration between 50-60 mph (which my grand-SIL insists is a broken belt on one of my tires).

At any rate, the car is performing well otherwise; I’ve had to trek to Charlotte about every day since April 20 and on 4/21 had an oil change but even after that, the car used a quart, so it’s also using oil, not entirely surprising since there are 140K miles on it. I probably put as much mileage on it as I would in a couple of months normally. So, when I get some more money, it’s back to Tim the Mechanic to have him look for it or at least to get some A/C going (highly recommended in our hot/humid summers here). I’ve learned the sun roof isn’t as pleasurable in temps over 80 deg. : )

What is troubling is, does he share their views on issues like climate change, the ACA and BENGHAZI?

It all goes together does it not if you accept them as being tough and dedicated. Look at what they are tough on and dedicated to.

I think any attempt to confront on those issues will lead to frustration. From all I’ve seen here item #1 for D_F is “Team GOP”. It’s the default position and he’ll retreat to and defend that.

I guess the only way to really find out his position is to manage to hold a discussion on the issue without bringing political parties or stances into it. And probably will also have to convince him that you’re simply not going to jump to the political side once he states an opinion on the subject.

If you get off the main streets in a lot of places around Center City or Rittenhouse Square there is a maze of these little streets and courts with row houses and small properties. And little park areas are squirreled away in some of them. Have to download the “good” camera since I have pictures from walks there - this set was quick iPhone stuff.

Hey, I lived in Kensington 40 yrs ago and it was a tough working class neighborhood then. And full of narrow little streets and nothing but row houses but no parks there. I lived on Hope St and N. American St., both above Girard and close to and parallel to Front St (our local shopping area)—probably not there any longer. It was an experience, for sure since there is no kind of urban industrial housing like that in the south. The south specialized in “shotgun” houses, though for its mill workers but they were cheaply built, one story, clapboard stand alones.

I drove down through that area (Kensington) last week. Basically followed the SEPTA line down Kensington Ave and along Front St. as it was the first time I came down through there. So I was on a main street rather than in the warren of row houses. Still seems very working class neighborhood as compared to the gentrified areas around Rittenhouse and the Museum District.

Yes, I think it was originally where a lot of Irish immigrants settled and there were mostly older people and poor younger ones even when I was there (most of their kids had already moved to the semi-detached houses in the Northeast and elsewhere). And the politics there were pretty mixed, but you know how those old wards were—the ward workers tried to strong arm people to vote for Nixon (we campaigned for McGovern), and we even discovered there was a Nazi cell in the back of a corner store. Not everyone was like that, though, and I got to attend a couple of great block parties, too. : )

It seems to be an expanding circle. When I first moved here it was visible going north towards Temple Univ. by apartment buildings going up and store fronts changing or disappearing. (Like a Subaru dealership on Broad St disappearing.) Towards South Street it was brown stones and row houses being renovated and then resold or rented out. In Center City it was new apartment or condo buildings, or old multi-story industrial/office buildings being renovated. And it’s still ongoing with old row buildings being demolished and more new buildings going up.

I haven’t driven through Fishtown, but from reading the local entertainment paper it seems to be a place that has a lot of clubs and renovation going on.

Williamsburg, Brooklyn. 20 years ago, it was a rough working-class neighborhood across the East River from the Lower East Side of Manhattan. 10 years ago, it was fully changed over to an artsy, bohemian enclave. Today it’s yuppies in brand-new 30 story condos.

So Fishtown has gone through the first transition that Williamsburg did.

But, we have seen the Book of Kells, the Guinness Storehouse, the lovely little town of Howth, the Kilmainham Gaol, the Jeanie Johnston, and a portion of the Giro d’Italia, less than 2km from the finish. It was intense. I have pictures.

And also pictures of the 25+ support cars rolling after the riders, each with 4+ very expensive bikes on their roofs.

Same with a working class section of Charlotte (North Charlotte) which has been renamed, of course, NoDa (for north of Davidson). So predictable. Even an old mill has been converted to condos there. It’s the artsy place “to be” in Charlotte even though it still looks somewhat seedy.

Hey all,

Had a good, long conversation with the GF’s maternal grandfather about nearly everything under the sun. The man lived through the siege of Malta during WWII as a boy and has that faraway look in his eyes whenever he begins to ruminate on the time.
He’s also a hardcore Catholic, but one who barely flinched when in answer to the question of ‘what denomination are you?’ I answered ‘none’. I can’t say how glad I am that he doesn’t consider me some sort of unwashed heathen whose goal is to despoil the faith of his godly granddaughter.
He will even admit that the age of the universe may be measured in millions of years and that there were previous forms of humanity that became H. Sapiens.
But, he cannot begin to accept that man came from still more primitive forms. And further, while he is willing to admit that the climate is indeed on the shift, mankind is, in his view, not likely the cause of it.
It was pleasant to have a debate in which we could agree to disagree, and I could hardly have stated plainly how I felt given the deference I owe him, but it was a good demonstration of how faith-as-meme, does less to affect existing intellect as it does to create foreclosure in one’s reasoning.
Quite apart from the cynical assholes who see the blindspots and seek to exploit them for political and/or financial gain…

Philly has multiple areas doing that transformation. Fishtown has been previously mentioned. Manayunk is probably further along since it already has a reputation as a working-class area that has switched to a bar/shopping area. The area around Rittenhouse Square is sort of finishing up - the “bad” areas are getting smaller, and the extension of the river trail down to South Street is going to help push renovation and development in that area to the west of the square.

And there’s still a lot going on in the Market Street corridor between City Hall and the Schuylkill River. More new townhouses going up and at least three projects building new apartment buildings or renovating existing buildings into apartments or condos. And there is almost a whole block of empty lot fronting Market in one place. (A 2-story parking garage, a fire station, three empty lots*, and a few now empty storefronts.)

* - One of the empty lots is due to the wall collapse onto a Salvation Army thrift store back last June during adjacent demolition work.

Location, location, location.

But it does amuse me, as a working class person, that the places we wouldn’t have set foot in because they had such bad reputations have been glamorized by others who have no idea that the bar they thought was “awesome” was a place you could get your throat cut. We wanted to move out of those neighborhoods, not into them or stay in them. People who grew up in those poor houses certainly didn’t want to stay there—we wanted better.

The neighborhood roughly below Fishtown, Northern Liberties, is supposedly a similarly re-gentrified neighborhood, but it seems like it still has some rough spots.

There’s two murders I’m aware of that happened there over the last few years: one was drug-related, and the more recent one involved a woman literally being gunned down in front of her mom during a mugging.

What’s weird is you don’t hear about that kind of shit going in Fishtown to the north, and Old City to the south.

It’s a complex and dynamic interaction I believe. Part of it is familiarity breeding contempt, or at least a heavy desire to get out and be somewhere else. Part of it is an ongoing search for the “perfect” living arrangement. Part of it is competing priorities. And there is an ongoing dynamic real estate market as dealers seek profit in building and renovating areas to support businesses or meeting changing living trends.

And I think the priorities also change as one ages and moves through life. An ideal spot to live as a 20-something that facilitates clubbing is probably not the spot you want to live in as a 40-something while you’re raising children or teens.

You also make a number of trade-offs between city/suburban/rural living. Ease of work access, having to use vehicles for getting anywhere, access to green space, having privacy, etc.

People who grew up in those poor houses certainly didn’t want to stay there—we wanted better.

noda.org

There’s also the aspect of regentrification forcing out long time home owners suddenly facing huge tax bills they can’t afford.

Calling back to Philly, the Society Hill neighborhood is a prime example of that. Starting roughly to the east and south of Independence Hall, from what I’ve heard it was an absolute slum until the mid-60’s.

Today, it’s one of the nicest and most expensive places to live in the city, but a lot of long time residents had to leave due to spiraling real estate taxes.

re: #150 Mattand

The neighborhood roughly below Fishtown, Northern Liberties, is supposedly a similarly re-gentrified neighborhood, but it seems like it still has some rough spots.

There’s two murders I’m aware of that happened there over the last few years: one was drug-related, and the more recent one involved a woman literally being gunned down in front of her mom during a mugging.

What’s weird is you don’t hear about that kind of shit going in Fishtown to the north, and Old City to the south.

An administrative assistant I used to work with was a long time Philly native. She said that Philly’s neighborhoods were a patchwork or “good” and “bad” spots. And there could be a small (couple of blocks) “bad” spot between two “good” spots that you could wander into without realizing it. And sort of vice-versa as an area started to gentrify.

It might also hinge on *when* you wander into those areas as well. Center City streets are busy during the day, but pedestrian traffic dries up after 7pm in a lot of areas. And I’ve heard that things can get a little dicey down around the Convention Center after 9pm.

And Philadelphia is probably happy about that since it helps maintain their tax base.

As a comparison the last time I checked the area east and south of the US Capitol building in Washington, D.C. still has a lot of boarded up store fronts going back to the 1968 riots.

Yeah, I’ve experienced that in South Philly. We were walking around there Saturday night. One block is fine, the next is dicey. Changes like Maine weather.

The Convention Center area doesn’t surprise me. The corner of Arch and 13th was a long time semi red light district.

It is amazing how desolate Center City can get at night. It’s hard to believe sometimes you’re walking around the second biggest city on the East Coast.

A lot of city centers get like that. Lots of city/state office buildings that empty out. Not much near by in terms of residencies. And the club/theater/restaurant zone is not that close by.

And Philly looks busy compared to how downtown Pittsburgh sort of closes up after 5 pm.

Where I am in, about 1:15 east of downtown Atlanta beyond the suburbs, the sub-division I’m in has 34 homes. There are half a dozen Latino households, about a dozen African American, the same number of Caucasian, 3 from Southeast Asia, 2 from India

Broken down further, 2 of the houses are owned by gay couples, and another two by lesbian couples

The discussion seems to have started with rowhouses, gone into gentrification of old neighborhoods, and I think is going to start on some of the associated issues thereof. With some side discussion of how the increased real estate values push out “older” owners, the complexity of desire for rural/suburban/city living advantages.

It does happen everywhere. This area I live in now is on a lake, and I’ve seen what used to be modest campers and trailer weekend or summer retreats on it and typical smaller suburban type houses suddenly gain such value that only the very well off can actually afford them now. A vacant lot on the main channel easily goes for $250K. It’s full of new McMansions built by Charlotteans and those now wanting luxe digs for vacations who have no history in this area of former farms, although w/I-77 close by it’s easier getting into Charlotte for work. The interstate often winds up being a parking lot, though, since a lot of these towns north of Charlotte have undergone a similar transformation. The lake was created by Duke Power (at the time) in the ’60s and they have 2 generating plants, one coal, one nuclear on it. They used to lease lots for $25/mo and long term leaseholders were able to buy them for $25K 30 yrs ago when Duke started selling them off. Now, that same real estate fever has turned this county into a BR community 30 mi from “town” and housing developments were/are popping up all over. Construction has commenced again with an improved economy.

Boko Haram has revealed themselves to be Kharijites; they - like all takfiri groups - are beyond the pale.

In classical fiqh, such groups can expect no quarter and no mercy in dealing with them. They have removed themselves from the Ummah and believe they are operating under divine sanction and they do nothing but spread chaos and dissension. They have created their own rules; that is considered bi’dah (innovation) and that is forbidden.

Boko Haram has one of two choices: Surrender at once, lay down their arms and repent of their blasphemies.

The other choice is their complete and utter destruction.

re: #184 wheat-doggha — oo bird outside my window

That second option may just happen, if they’re found.

Indeed.

This little snippet - in my opinion - sums up Boko Haram quite nicely:

The politically aggrieved (also being religious people) often seek religious interpretations that allow or justify the actions they feel compelled to take. It becomes a matter where religion does not shape politics (politics does not unfold cohesively from the principles of the religion) but rather politics of desperation or outrage may shape and distort the interpretation of the religion - in this way religion and violent politics can, at times, become dangerously conflated (and dangerously intertwined with a misanthropic impulse to purge the society of impure elements). But the root is politics (and disillusionment), not religion. Unfortunately, the impact of seeking religious justification for extreme actions is that a (mistaken) theological precedent emerges. The more extreme the actions taken, the more unbending and absolutist the theological justification becomes.

The Khawarij method was to strive endlessly to determine who among those who call themselves believers were, in reality, heretics, and then to drive out from the community all such “so-called” believers till only “true” believers remained. Some of the sub-sects of the Khawarij accomplished this through wholesale slaughter of those Muslims believed to be engaged in any form of shirk (according to the Khawarij’s own amorphous, shifting, and politically-bound ideas of what constituted shirk). They were characterized by their hasty and persistent tendency to declare Muslims who deviated even fractionally from the narrow Khawarij view of Islam as betrayers of the religion and deserving of death. Under the Khawarij, the designations of kafir and mushrik came to mean the wrong type of believer, rather than unbeliever. An unbeliever was often more palatable to them than the wrong type of believer who by his mistaken belief supposedly undermined the religion itself. This type of takfir was a praxis first widely initiated by the Khawarij. They made themselves judge, jury, and executioner in labeling, convicting, and punishing those who did not measure up to their standard (throwing aside due legal process). In the midst of the turbulent politics of that time their hermeneutic was not merely a theoretical position, and rather than engage in reflection, discussion, and exchange of ideas, the Khawarij spoke with their swords and they spoke often, and without mercy.

I once bought a t-shirt from engrish.com that had a “caution, floor wet” type sign on it, except that in English, it said “carefully slip and fall down” (the Mandarin, I presume, was correct). I’m getting all my online accounts set up for my new health insurance provider since my coverage just started May 1.

I have come to two inescapable conclusions during this process:

1) Health insurance is ridiculously complex and things that should be easy (how much should this medicine cost?) can be highly aggravating.

2) There is a special place in hell for companies that design their websites to ONLY be compatible with Internet Explorer.

This is an unresolved issue left over from the dissolution of the USSR. Back then it did not matter much, Russians in the Ukraine still saw themselves as Russians and Ukraine as part of “their” empire.

They were a privileged minority: they got the best jobs and had the best chances of advancement.

Since the USSR fell apart, they have been without a nation and often find themselves being discriminated against as a minority in the country they live in.

And Russia has been letting this resentment fester for over two decades now before moving in to exploit it.

Do you know what your out-of-network provider deductible is? Here in California this is just one of many things that can’t be found for many Covered CA providers.

The reason this matters is that even though the facility you use may be in-network, is the anesthesiologist? The radiologist? The other specialists that may be involved and are rotated in as needed?

That means that curbing birthrates tends to lead to stability, and that’s where educating girls comes in. You educate a boy, and he’ll have fewer children, but it’s a small effect. You educate a girl, and, on average, she will have a significantly smaller family. One robust Nigeria study managed to tease out correlation from causation and found that for each additional year of primary school, a girl has 0.26 fewer children. So if we want to reduce the youth bulge a decade from now, educate girls today.

If they are more closely aligned with Russia, they simply can’t decide that a land mass they live in is no longer a part of Ukraine.

It was pretty much that way before ACA, and something that really needs to be dealt with.

I still have my original health policy, and because the provider network it includes covers everyone who accepts insurance, it really wasn’t.

Because insurance companies were allowed to greatly reduce the size of the provider networks under the ACA, a lot of people are getting some bad news about something they have no control over.

Do people even think about what they say?

Yes, they do. And they mean every word of it.

They are violent primitives, and our nation continues to tolerate and coddle them. Fear of repercussions is the only thing that stops them from actually acting on their vile impulses — and with SYG laws in places like Florida, even that fear is slowly eroding.

People like that, and our continued insistence that they’re just harmless cranks, is why children get shot to death for playing their music too loud or getting into an argument in a theater. This is what happens when you absolve people of any real, impactful responsibility for the things they say and do.

If they are more closely aligned with Russia, they simply can’t decide that a land mass they live in is no longer a part of Ukraine.

When we do Japan it’s almost the easiest one to do, since the difference is such that you arrive there, go to bed, and get up on a reasonable schedule for travelling.

Germany was also not quite so bad because it wasn’t too long to stay awake from landing to a semi-legit bedtime.

We landed at 11am, and my body decided to couple that with feeling like absolute shit, so I had to go down for a nap for a few hours. Attempts to fix this have not worked since.

Neither. The Windsors came in as a German family to fill in after the Lancaster/York clans failed to reproduce sufficiently.*

Plus an interim period of trying out the Scottish Monarchy which stayed a bit too Catholic for them. So they then switched to having a Dutchman run things for a while.

Hangings and execution were considered a spectacle and entertainment well into Victorian times. The Clint Eastwood western “Hang Them High” includes showing the festival atmosphere that went around a multiple man hanging taking place in the territorial seat.

Ding Ding Ding!

GoT is pretty much just the 90s coming back around for a second pass. Violence and sex with a thin veneer of plot stretched paper-thin over it so that people who like to think of themselves as fine upstanding citizens can say they “watch it for the story”.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that. We humans have been entertaining ourselves with violence, sex, and violent sex for thousands of years. Pretending that we’re above that sort of thing is a pretty recent conceit. The marvel of the human brain is the ability to be entertained by what is clearly understood to be fake violence/sex, while actively refraining from participating in such horrors in the real world.

Suffice it to say, I don’t subscribe to the model that says that you’re a bad person for enjoying so-called “problematic” entertainment. Fiction is fiction.

The female characters are exceptionally good, something that’s very rare in modern fiction. I’m a single guy and most relationships (not necessarily sexual/romantic) bore the crap out of me in most fiction. But GoT does relationships so well.
