It’s sad. I really believe that many people who think of themselves as “opposed to abortion” and vote as such really haven’t thought through the consequences of their position, or indeed what the current legal situation allows and does not allow.

They haven’t thought it through because it’s not a matter of facts and logic. It’s a matter of Divine Duty. The Skydad says abortion is bad and therefore you must vote against abortion, because if you don’t vote with the Skydad you go to Hell.

Just a quick note to pages authors - the people who run Raw Story get upset when you post their articles here, even with a link to their site. They don’t like having their articles quoted elsewhere.

I suggest when you find a story there that looks interesting, check the original source instead (since Raw Story basically is just repackaged stories from elsewhere) and use that for a post.

And it’s always best to write something about it in your own voice, instead of just quoting the article. Tell us why you thought this was interesting or important. It makes for a much more interesting post.

Population control has a privatized side too. In Mexico, Human Rights Watch has documented how many U.S.-owned factories force women workers to submit to mandatory pregnancy testing as a condition for getting or keeping a job. Quinacrine, a chemical form of sterilization not approved by any drug regulatory authority, is promoted by private population control interests in clinics in Florida and many countries overseas. In the U.S. the organization CRACK pays poor women drug users to be sterilized.

It’s ok because it doesn’t happen on US Soil.

Lucas is, always has been, and always will be a hack. The only reason the original trilogy was any good was all of the people that were not Lucas that worked on them. As soon as Lucas got control, he not only made three new and awful movies, but also went back and screwed up the originals, even going so far as to go back and insert a BIG NOOOOOOOOOO into Return of the Jedi’s pivotal scene, presumably as some sort of middle-finger to everyone that criticized him the first time he did it.

Yes, this is right on the mark. Very similar to the reasoning I went through when I decided to de-emphasize these issues at LGF — there’s a double bind at work, where even if you’re trying to promote logical reasoned criticism of the more extreme elements in Islam, the climate of demonization causes a reversal of the intent and instead it ends up just feeding into the right’s smear campaigns.

It’s a real problem, but I decided I didn’t want to be part of that cycle any more.

Here’s the opening blurb from MacMilan on GG’s book:

In May 2013, Glenn Greenwald set out for Hong Kong to meet an anonymous source who claimed to have astonishing evidence of pervasive government spying and insisted on communicating only through heavily encrypted channels. That source turned out to be the 29-year-old NSA contractor Edward Snowden, and his revelations about the agency’s widespread, systemic overreach proved to be some of the most explosive and consequential news in recent history, triggering a fierce debate over national security and information privacy. As the arguments rage on and the government considers various proposals for reform, it is clear that we have yet to see the full impact of Snowden’s disclosures.

Now for the first time, Greenwald fits all the pieces together, recounting his high-intensity ten-day trip to Hong Kong, examining the broader implications of the surveillance detailed in his reporting for The Guardian, and revealing fresh information on the NSA’s unprecedented abuse of power with never-before-seen documents entrusted to him by Snowden himself.

I wouldn’t be surprised if GG himself wrote it. More and more I think that he, like the other Glenn, has become more an actor taking on a persona than a man making an honest representation of himself.

Giving Ukraine it’s nukes back would most likely put Russia in quite the dilemma. If you really wanted to put the fear of God into the pants of the Russians, give Ukraine its nukes back and simultaneously make them a full NATO-member state.

Imagine NATO nukes with a 30-second flight time to Moscow.

An interesting tidbit from Greenwald’s book excerpt in the Guardian — the Snowden interview that unveiled his identity to the world was actually a do-over (a first interview was scrapped by Poitras and he was allowed to try and improve his performance):

theguardian.com

We were determined that the world would first hear about Snowden, his actions and his motives, from Snowden himself, not through a demonisation campaign spread by the US government while he was in hiding or in custody and unable to speak for himself.

Poitras had spent the previous 48 hours editing the footage from my first interview with Snowden, but she said it was too detailed, lengthy, and fragmented to use. She wanted to film a new interview right away; one that was more concise and focused, and wrote a list of 20 or so specific questions for me to ask him. I added several of my own as Poitras set up her camera and directed us where to sit.

I’d love to see the real first interview leaked.

My initial thought was actually a block of wood with a cover pasted on, but the behavior of the cover made me rethink that.

I suppose glue might work, I was just thinking of the drill techniques that come to mind and most would still likely cause some ripping on the edges. I think.

I don’t have handy access to a book to try it out on + a drill press + the required bits so I guess I’ll have to wait to figure it out.

We are so screwed. Between oil companies owning the right and paranoid environmentalists on the left blocking nuclear power you just know mankind will burn every ton of coal and every gallon of oil it can find. In addition to making a few slight changes — such as adding dollar signs and commas — the DeMaio campaign added his opponent’s name, which had not been in the original. Peters had filed for an extension when the original database was published, making the information unavailable.

Testimonium Flavianum was certainly useless, but the second mention - his ref to James “the brother of Jesus, who is called Christ” - is still accepted by the majority as authentic, and I used to think it constituted sort of a convergence with Paul’s mention of the same. Carrier’s reasoning is too convincing for me though, in that this reference doesn’t fit the context and is more easily explained as referring to Jesus Damnaeus, with “the Christ” being an inadvertent interpolation of a later marginal note (this kind of thing used to happen all the time).

The dreaded Liberal Media label.

270 freetoken  May 12, 2014 2:05:13pm

While I find the know-nothing right-wing as mendacious as ever, with regard to subjects like climate change, our society as a whole has a great bit of difficulty coming to terms with the idea and even more so the implications.

Most reporters use the “IPCC” as a crutch, not realize or not caring that the IPCC doesn’t really do research itself, and as far as research is concerned is useful mostly in coordinating disparate research worldwide.

Notice how few news reports cite the source of information, and if they do any citation it will be “IPCC”.

I’m waving my hands in generalities here… but most writers on the subject in the popular media really don’t have the first clue about climate change (as with most technical subjects.)

The current political approach to emphasis the “now” in climate change sounds good to political operatives but I think will backfire, because the hard truth is that our lives are quite short compared to the changes on the surface of the planet around us. No one alive today in Florida, for example, will have to worry about Florida being flooded out of existence. Yes, during the next millenium south Florida will slip under the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. I expect our current society to have undergone at least an economic, if not also political, collapse by then.

That’s why I linked the Auk article - we’ve been at global life-web destruction for millennia, but only with the industrial revolution have we scaled up our destruction to where we can affect the globe within a couple of centuries. Previous extinctions were more or less regional, now we are eliminating life planetary-wide.

It’s not a story that sells to the crowd, who are more interested in race cars and sex - forms of immediate gratification - than in big picture, civilization scale issues.

His anti-government-surveillance stance plays well with those on the left who (rightly or wrongly) believe that the US government went too far in expanding and/or lost control of surveillance organizations in the wake of 9/11.

But yes, he has never been “left-wing” himself. As far as my limited awareness of his past activity goes, he’s basically slid around between being a more-or-less conventional right-winger and a libertarian.

When we push back against something discriminatory that they said or did, they turn themselves into the “victims” of “free speech.” And when we show then their own words, intact and beyond any reasonable debate, they act like we and our friends in the entertainment industry colluded to make up that which they themselves put on the record. If you track this stuff with any regularity, as I do, it can feel like living in a bizarro world—one where the war on critical thinking feels almost as stifling and in some ways as damaging as the fight against tangible rights.

And in which GG attempts to give Rand Paul legitimacy.

[Embedded content]

It’s something to keep an eye on. Lefty “establishment” outlets like DKos and MSNBC are trying to tamp it down but it’s entirely possible that Rand Paul could foster some cross over appeal from grass roots progressives. It’s a mixed blessing; it can potentially siphon off some votes but it does unload some of the loons on the other party.

Would guess #150 assuming that’s the Southern cross on a light blue field.

That would be a respectable position for Paul to take … if he didn’t belong to the Republican party that started the whole thing.

Libertarians of a feather flock together.

I used to respect the ACLU and, in fact, worked for lawyers who handled typical ACLU cases of the ’60s and ’70s, civil rights and so forth, Constitutional issues that had teeth in them and were for the good of individuals who were members of groups discriminated against traditionally over the years and defended their free speech issues as well.

I don’t know how to explain exactly how I see them today, but they’ve changed and I’m not so sure it’s for the better, even defending hate speech in a number of instances. Consider their position on Citizens United, for instance. aclu.org

I find I’m at odds with them on more issues than ever.

So Rand Paul being complimented by Greenwald means that Rand is going to siphon off millions of Democratic votes in 2016? ROFL. Yeah. Sure it does.

That would require ignoring everything Rand Paul actually stands for, but hey. Clearly we must keep our eyes on DKos for proof that they’re going to all vote for Rand Paul now. *eyeroll*

Oddly, while I didn’t take the quiz I was able to pick out Micronesia’s flag correctly on the first try. I can’t for the life of me figure out why on earth I’d be able to do such a thing. The human brain is a strange, strange thing…

329 GeneJockey  May 12, 2014 3:03:41pm

O-whatever the T has become, but I now know why 70 year old men are angry.

Let me start years ago, when I was just 9 years old, in 1966. I bought my first car magazine, Road & Track, with a picture of the then-new Jaguar E-type 2+2 coupe. OMG, what a beautiful car! I have been obsessed with sporty cars, basically all my life, but the American muscle cars of the late 60s through 71 - those I REALLY loved..

When you’re a kid, you can’t have one because you can’t drive. When you’re a young man, you can’t have one because you can’t afford it or the insurance. When you get married, you can’t have one because you’re supposed to be responsible. When you have kids, you can’t have one because you need a family car, AND you can’t afford it.

So, here I am, middle aged. The Big 3 started making muscle cars again, only now they don’t fly off the road when it bends gently, they get >20 mpg, they’re comfy, and even the base models have more power than most of the muscle cars did back in the day. I’ve been waiting 40 years, and I thought ‘Finally! I can get the car I’ve been wanting forever.’

Nope. Now, according to Mrs. Jockey, “It screams “Midlife Crisis!”

So there you go, why men at 70 are so pissed. Because they put off getting things they wanted for years, to be responsible family men, and when finally the kids are grown up, and you’re more financially stable, now you’re considered too old for it. You should buy a nice sedan.

I believe ‘Midlife Crisis’ is a ruse, and I think it’s as insulting as telling a woman “Don’t you worry your pretty head about that, little lady!”

/rant. Now get off my fucking lawn.

FYI, Sergey:

Something that has changed since you were last around here is KT. He’s more often concern trolling over articles he can’t be bothered to actually read or news stories that he twists in utterly strange ways. Everything he hates is leftist inspired and he still sees OWS behind every evil thing in America when it’s not under his bed trying to scare him.

It’s a shame, KT used to bring a lot of good to the conversation around here but I haven’t seen that KT for more than one or two posts since OWS started. Instead it’s passive/aggressive concern trolling to poison as many threads as possible.

I wasn’t even thinking about Skokie. The “principle” is supposed to be about constitutionality. And I just think there are a lot more “shouting fire in a crowded theater” situations out there that are indefensible, IMHO, but are receiving a hearing. Some, of course, disagree, but at the same time, defending those kinds of cases adds nothing to civil discourse, as we are finding out. Hate has become a cottage industry, to our detriment.

But yes, I suppose those who do it have every right to mutter their insanities and hate without restriction. I should not have to listen to it, day in and day out, and I elect not to. Unfortunately, enough do to make it profitable and in some quarters, influential.
