Is Rand Paul Really Against Voter ID Laws? Well, Actually…

Another word for this is “lying”
Wingnuts • Views: 22,785

Remember just a few days ago, when libertarian extremist Rand Paul got some press for telling a group of black pastors in Tennessee that the GOP needed to stop pushing voter ID laws? And remember how I scoffed at his statement?

Well, today the director of Rand Paul’s PAC “clarified” the Senator’s statement, and guess what?

Senator Paul was having a larger discussion about criminal justice reform and restoration of voting rights, two issues he has been speaking about around the country and pushing for in state and federal legislation.

In the course of that discussion, he reiterated a point he has made before that while there may be some instances of voter fraud, it should not be a defining issue of the Republican Party, as it is an issue that is perhaps perceived in a way it is not intended. At no point did Senator Paul come out against voter ID laws. In terms of the specifics of voter ID laws, Senator Paul believes it’s up to each state to decide that type of issue.

So basically, he still supports disenfranchising minorities Voter ID laws, but he doesn’t think the national GOP needs to make a big deal out of it.

4 S'latch  May 13, 2014 10:11:01am

So, if he said that the GOP needs to lay off voter ID because “It’s offending people.” no one should have interpreted that to mean he is actually opposed to voter ID laws. I see.

States Rights to do what they want with Voter ID, except every state must allow gun ID for voter ID which will be made Federal law for everybody. And states can do what they want except for allowing college ID to count because that = FRAUD. Also states can do what they want except allow people on the Welfares or Unemployed or food stamps to vote.

Another pandering elected GOP official exposed. Why would anyone object to characterizing these people as jackals or worse?

The GOP base has preferentially accumulated those with irrational resentments against the modern US, including racists, confederates, creationists, know-nothings, misogynists, homophobes, religious cranks, free-market fundamentalists, gun nuts, states-rights fetishists and assorted other loons.

One simply has to be at least a bit of a low-life to appeal to this crowd.

See how it works?

He said if Clinton runs for president, voters must be told what happened when she suffered a fall in December 2012. The official diagnosis was a blood clot. Rove told the conference near LA Thursday, “Thirty days in the hospital? And when she reappears, she’s wearing glasses that are only for people who have traumatic brain injury? We need to know what’s up with that.” Rove repeated the claim a number of times to the audience.

I wonder who he learned that from?

Reagan Remark Spurs Dukakis Health Report

Democratic presidential nominee Michael S. Dukakis on Wednesday released a detailed medical history, responding to press inquiries that have followed weeks of unsubstantiated rumors about his mental health.

The release of the report, showing that he is in good physical and mental health, was prompted by a remark by President Reagan on Wednesday morning. Asked about Dukakis, Reagan said he did not want to “pick on an invalid,” then later insisted that he had meant the remark in jest.

Nothing ever changes in the GOP.

The Federal government should be allowed to set standards for elections to all national offices, these should include the President and the US Congress.

The state can have its own standards for state elections, but since these are held simultaneously, it would be ridiculous to have separate ballots and voting booths.

That’s the big lie. The perception is of reality; the purpose of voter ID is to deny voting rights to Democrats. The Republicans are trying to CREATE the perception that it’s about voter fraud. It’s not working.

From Weigel’s article linked at the top:

Steve Chapman, a libertarian columnist I used to work with at Reason, used his space today to deride the claims of widespread fraud that justify new ID laws. “Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott brags of successfully prosecuting 50 cases of election fraud,” he wrote. “But the list his office sent me included only three cases in six years of someone being charged with voter impersonation at a polling place.”

Chapman could have gone further. Last week Iowa’s Republican secretary of state, Matt Schultz, released the results of a two-year investigation into possible vote fraud. He got the early headlines he wanted: There had, indeed, been illegal voting in Iowa, at a rate as high as 0.008427933 percent. But there had been no voter impersonation. Illegal votes had come, allegedly, from people who had committed felonies or had voted in two states. None of that could have been stopped with a one-state ID law.

I’m afraid the Republicans will see that as a seriously big number. Decimal points are almost like science, ya know.

I actually don’t mind them. I do it myself because I would rather see what’s coming. I can’t tell you how many times I have to give a cyclist extra room because he/she is riding loosely (not quite straight). If that cyclist knew what traffic was coming up, I’m sure he/she would ride straighter. When I see oncoming traffic I just tuck in a little bit tighter to the curb or the parked cars. I just feel that I know and the cyclist knows the situation, but a cyclist with his/her back to me doesn’t have the same awareness.

It’s 25 times more dangerous to ride against traffic than it is to ride with traffic. Most people aren’t looking for someone coming at them, but the real danger is when auto traffic wants to turn and doesn’t see the cyclist.

Just in my experience in Philadelphia, I’ll wait for the pedestrians to clear the intersection, and then when I start to make my right turn, a bike comes up from behind on the right to pass me on the inside. I have never had such a close call with a cyclist who is approaching from the front.

That’s an error on the part of the cyclist, assuming you had your signal on, or really, even if you didn’t. If the cyclist was in a bike path, the error was on the people responsible for installing infrastructure that contradicts the rules of the road and lures the cyclist into stupid maneuvers.

Yup again. Although my biggest fear riding is having a car overtake me and then cut me off to make a right turn. Cyclists should work from the assumption that the driver doesn’t see you. I make it point to get eye contact with a driver before I assume that he/she is stopping; not turning in front of me; etc.

Nope. Bikes function just fine under the rules for the road. It’s when bike lanes are put in that they can’t.

I will disagree due to seeing how they interact with motor vehicles here in Philadelphia - especially in places where there are two tight lanes. They (unfortunately) do not get treated as full vehicles by too many drivers, and all too many of them are not willing to act like full vehicles and demand the appropriate space.

Instead you see a hodge-podge of behaviors where they go up the middle or past cars on the parking lane side while the cars are awaiting an intersection to free up (see Steve’s post above for what happens sometimes as a result.) They run red lights and stop signs. And all too often switch between using the roads and the sidewalks. And this is just the adult riders, the children and teens are often worse.

Not that the automobile drivers are much better mind you. There seem to be enough assholes on bikes or driving cars to go around.

That’s a poorly skilled rider. Even when there is a bike lane, I am constantly checking behind me to see what is back there. I don’t weave.

Amateurs. I sometimes drift left on purpose while looking in my mirror to see whether the driver notices and starts to move left also. If not, I keep drifting into their path. Once they react, I know I’ve been seen and I give the driver more room.

You go where you look when you’re on two wheels. Looking over your shoulder, unless you have remarkable muscle discipline, naturally shifts your torso and thus your arms in that direction. Thus the bike starts to lean and veer. This is why motorcyclists are taught to look through the turn, and to avoid target-fixating on the outside.

That being said, yeah. Bike lanes cause huge problems. Bicyclists face the same hazards as Motorcyclists, only amplified because they’re even smaller, even quieter, and even more rare. Having two wheels instead of four should not grant you any less entitlement to full use of the lane. The number one concern of two-wheeled transportation is to make sure that you can be seen, and a tiny lane off to the extreme side of the road is not the way to do that.

It’s 25 times more dangerous to ride against traffic than it is to ride with traffic. Most people aren’t looking for someone coming at them, but the real danger is when auto traffic wants to turn and doesn’t see the cyclist.

I watched the movie Premium Rush, which seemed to glorify reckless biking in much the same way Hollywood likes to glorify car chases.

Maybe there’s some sort of metaphysical duality with bicycles. They are part pedestrian and part motor vehicle, with an extra helping of uncertainty.

90 wrenchwench  May 13, 2014 11:24:29am

re: #82 Feline Fearless Leader

I forgot to add, ‘if there’s a wide right lane.’ I’m for lots of enforcement, especially against bicycle operators. The bad behavers are making it more dangerous for the rest of us.

I don’t consider that a proper “bicycle lane”. I’m of the same opinion as David Byrne in _Bicycle Diaries_ in that a bicycle lane should be barriered well enough that a motor car cannot enter it. Which is not a quality of the marking only “bike lane” that sits between a traffic lane and the curbside parking. Simply too much interaction there and temptation for a motor car to double-park there “just for a minute”.

I also see it a couple of times a day that when a cyclist looks over his/her left shoulder the bike veers a couple of feet out into the street. (Edit) If the cyclist didn’t have to keep looking over the shoulder, the bike would go much straighter and the cyclist would always see the traffic that was most important. Also, the oncoming traffic would be more confident that the cyclist knows the situation

I’m really surprised I don’t see mirrors on many bikes. I have seen some slick little ones that looked very helpful awareness of the immediate area.

Asked which issue was most important to me: Obamacare, national debt and two other pretty useless issues. I said none. Pollster said “none?” I said, “none. jobs is the issue.”
Then he asked since I didn’t support Bevin or McConnell, who did I support? There or two even bigger nutcases on the Republican primary ballot next week.
I said, as a Republican, I support the Democrat, Alison Lundergan Grimes.

I have a small helmet mounted mirror and also generally carry one that sits on the back of my left hand. Use them both to “check my 6”, plus a look over my shoulder before turns or swerves if possible.

The biggest factor (walking, biking, or auto driving) is looking ahead and anticipating issues of course.

Yeah, I get a little furious every time I’m on the bike and I see some squidjockey lanesplitting at a red light. It’s hard enough to ride without all the four-wheelers around me being pissed off at every biker they see because of that.

Fortunately, motorcycles are prevalent enough in my general area that I haven’t had to aggressively defend my lane — yet. Still, going out of my way to make sure I’ve got space and am visible is an ingrained part of how I ride. Lightly pulsing the brakes to flash the tail light before slowing down, flashing the high beams before passing, etc.

Miles Davis Film ‘Miles Ahead’ Starring Don Cheadle To Begin Filming In Cincinnati This Summer

The Greater Cincinnati & Northern Kentucky Film Commission announced that Don Cheadle will star as iconic jazz innovator Miles Davis in a movie filming in Cincinnati this summer.

Cheadle (“House of Lies,” “Iron Man 2,” “Iron Man 3”) also will direct and produce “Miles Ahead” from a script he wrote with Steven Baigelman.

Local musicians and actors will be needed for the movie about trumpeter Davis, a major jazz figure in the bebop, cool jazz and jazz fusion movements in the 20th century.

… “We look forward to exploring the culture, musicians and backdrop of this city. We are hoping to work closely with the community to bring this project to (the) screen,” said Cheadle in the film commission release today.

Zoe Saldana and Ewan McGregor also will star in the film.

Sounds good. I’m looking forward to it already.

OPERATION AMERICAN SPRING - UPDATE 51 LEAVING FOR D.C.

—-

False Flag!!!

COUP ALERT: Operation American Spring is a Trap

On Tuesday, May 13, 2014, President Obama will award the Medal of Honor to former Army Sergeant Kyle J. White at the White House. Sgt. White allegedly risked his life to save fellow service members during a 2007 ambush in Afghanistan.
.
Three days later on Friday, May 16, 2014, Retired Colonel Harry Riley will lead a march of thousands of so-called “patriots” to Washington D.C. to “remove Obama, Biden, Reid, McConnell, Boehner, Pelosi, and Attorney General Holder from Office”.
.
Interestingly, Col. Riley has termed the march “OPERATION AMERICAN SPRING”, a name synonymous with Islamic terrorism. In essence, “Operation American Spring” is a trap to set-up well-meaning “patriots” for acts of state-sponsored terror so that Obama’s political opposition can be vilified and a civil war can commence.
.
It is during one or both of these seemingly harmless events that a state-sponsored coup d’état and/or terror attacks will likely take place. Although terror plots are always subject to change, most likely target is Washington, D.C., namely the Obama White House and the Washington Monument.

The kicker is that however you break it down the sheriff is a representative of a higher power. Going back historically the “shire reeve” from which the term sheriff is derived was the local magistrate responsible to and appointed by the king. He was a representative of a central government even then.

I presume the counter argument to that is that the current sheriff is locally elected and thus only a representative of the local people without any responsibilities towards the state or federal level. If that separation is held true, then the posse commitus folk are simply in rebellion against the state and federal government and should be treated as such.

Update: Assad still using chemical weapons
French Say Assad’s Forces Used Chlorine Gas 14 Times

France’s foreign minister said Tuesday there were strong indications that the Syrian government had carried out attacks using chemical agents, especially chlorine, as many as 14 times in recent months, despite its promise to renounce such weapons in joining the global treaty banning them last year.

The minister, Laurent Fabius, who met here Tuesday morning with Secretary of State John Kerry, also said that he regretted that the Obama administration had decided against using force to enforce its “red line” after a chemical weapons attack in Damascus last Aug. 21 that Western nations, led by the United States, blamed on forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad.

France, Mr. Fabius indicated, had been prepared to use force as part of an American-led coalition, but did not want to act alone. Had such a military strike been carried out, Mr. Fabius said, “we feel that it would have changed many things.”

Yemeni Jet Hits 3 Trucks Carrying Weapons in South

A Yemeni military jet struck three trucks packed with weapons in a restive southern region on Tuesday, killing eight people including suspected al-Qaida militants, military and local officials said.

The trucks were moving arms and ammunition, including artillery equipment, from Shabwa to Marib governorate, where al-Qaida militants have been retreating after the military drove them from nearby strongholds, military officials said. Three of those killed are the drivers of the trucks, while the rest are thought to be al-Qaida fighters, they said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media.

CNBC Anchor Loses It: ‘I Don’t Know Who the Republican Party Is Anymore’
by Evan McMurry | 9:34 am, May 13th, 2014 VIDEO 170

“Can we stop saying ‘The Republican Party?’” Sullivan said. “As somebody that grew up in a conservative household, I don’t recognize the Republican Party of even my youth. I don’t like what I see. I don’t like the far right. I don’t like the extremism. They’ve pushed me away.”

He very much continued:

“As someone pretty much not religious, pro-same-sex marriage, pro-legalization of marijuana for the most part — what party is this? What party am I supposed to be in? When I’m a fiscal conservative who believes that small government can often be better — there are times for larger government.

“So we keep saying ‘The Republican Party.’ I don’t know who the Republican Party is anymore. I don’t know if the Republican Party knows who the Republican Party — because it’s not a party, unfortunately, that I can get on board with, because I don’t like the small-minded attitude of a lot of the far right wing stuff that comes out. I should go home now.”

Archaeologists have confirmed the presence of a long-lost Roman military camp deep in eastern Germany. The 18-hectare site, found near the town of Hachelbich in Thuringia, would have sheltered a Roman legion of up to 5000 troops. Its location in a broad valley with few impediments suggests it was a stopover on the way to invade territory further east.

Additional evidence of an ancient encampment includes traces of eight makeshift bread ovens not far from the camp perimeter and a handful of artifacts, including four nails from the bottom of Roman boots, a piece of horse tackle, and part of a scabbard. The style of these artifacts—and a few radiocarbon dates—place the camp somewhere in the first 2 centuries C.E., too broad a range to be linked to a known specific event in Roman history.

Just days after HashFast’s CEO told Ars that his company was “as poor as church mice,” a group of five customers has filed an involuntary bankruptcy petition against the Bitcoin miner manufacturer-turned-chipmaker. It’s the first step in an attempt to recover over $330,000 in payments that were apparently never fulfilled.

That affects a wide range of rockets should this continue for a prolonged period - Atlas V use Russian RD-180s and it would screw with US DoD/NSA/NRO satellite launches, to say nothing of commercial launches and launches requiring the Atlas V lift capabilities.

In a way that helps Musk’s Space X, since they aren’t relying on Russian designed engines in the way that Boeing-Lockheed are.

The Walkback of Shame has begun:

CNBC Anchor: ‘I Wasn’t Praising The Dems’ When I Went Off On GOP

Sullivan revisited his “Morning Joe” bit Tuesday afternoon on his CNBC program, “Street Signs.” He said that he wasn’t commenting on the GOP’s handling of the Benghazi attacks, as some of the other MSNBC panelists were, but instead was making a point about the direction of the party.

“When I look at all of the different social issues, I would be willing as a voter to sacrifice a bad economic policy — or one maybe I didn’t agree with — if it was better than some big social agenda I cannot get on board with,” Sullivan said. “And I know a lot of people that have been faced with the same decision. That’s the point I was trying to make.”

Longtime CNBC host Larry Kudlow chimed in and said that in recent years the Democratic Party has silenced people who stand against the party’s social messaging, including those who oppose abortion.

“I wasn’t praising that side, Larry, I wasn’t praising the Dems,” Sullivan said, adding that American politics looks extremely polarized to outsiders.

re: #210 b_sharp

Atheists are pretty much against all religions.

There’s a big difference between not believing in religion (i.e., atheism) and anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, anti-Catholicism etc.

Unfortunately, some atheists tends to conflate these by using their skepticism about religious belief as a justification for bigoted smears, blindly unaware of the massive irony involved.
