Stephen Colbert to Glenn Greenwald: “Do You Believe There Should Be No Espionage?”

Weird • Views: 28,603

Stephen Colbert actually asks a couple of tough questions of the Mighty Greenwald — specifically about the fact that many of the NSA documents revealed by Greenwald and pals have nothing to do with surveillance on US citizens, but are simply exposing legitimate espionage programs.

It’s framed ironically, of course, and there’s no real follow-up when Greenwald inevitably dodges out of answering it (he blames it on the New York Times), but this is probably the roughest grilling he’ll face all week on his book promo tour.

UPDATE at 5/13/14 2:41:37 pm

Bob Cesca discovered that Greenwald’s latest article for the Guardian, which alleges that the NSA is intercepting and installing beacon devices in servers and routers being shipped overseas, is just more of the same misleading hyperbole; again Greenwald has omitted mentioning that this only applies to certain “hard targets,” not to the general public: Greenwald Misleads Again, This Time It’s About NSA and Internet Routers.

In this case Greenwald’s article uses the term “international customers” to describe which devices are intercepted, even though the actual NSA document uses the word “targets” several times. Seems clear that Greenwald omitted this important distinction deliberately to give the impression that everyone’s servers and routers are being tampered with, since his article quotes directly from that part of the NSA document but never mentions “targets.”

Stealthy Techniques Can Crack Some of SIGINT’s Hardest Targets

Here’s how it works: shipments of computer network devices (servers, routers, etc.) being delivered to our targets throughout the world are intercepted. Next, they are redirected to a secret location where Tailored Access Operations/Access Operations (AO-S326) employees, with the support of the Remote Operations Center (S321), enable the installation of beacon implants directly into our targets’ electronic devices.

Interestingly, Putin doesn’t hurry to annex Luganda and Dombabwe or even to *seriously* acknowledge the “referendums” (aside from saying he “respects” them). There’s an opinion that annexing these two poor oblasts alone was not in his plans. And the provocations in the other regions seem to have failed.

16 Justanotherhuman  May 13, 2014 12:54:52pm

Snowden gave GG all the docs (contrary to what GG said originally about not having all of them) and he trusted GG to do what he’s done? To “sort through” them and “publish” what GG deemed “appropriate” even if GG engaged in hyperbole and outright lying about them?

Just how gullible is Snowden?

Operation American Spring promises to drive Obama from office this Friday

“We are calling for the removal of Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Harry Reid, Mitch McConnell, John Boehner, Nancy Pelosi, and Eric Holder as a start toward constitutional restoration,” said retired Army Col. Harry Riley, leader of the Operation American Spring protest group. “They have all abandoned the US Constitution, are unworthy to be retained in a position that calls for servant status.”

Operation American Spring aims to pressure those lawmakers who remain – or are replaced by officials of their own choosing – “to sponsor and pass very Constitutionally crafted State legislation to dissolve the size, powers, scope and spending of the U.S. Government by 2/3rds.”

The activists say they expect 10 million to 30 million like-minded Americans to join them Friday in the nation’s capital for a rally patterned after Occupy Wall Street and Arab Spring” protests.

re: #28 jaunte

IOW, this is how spies operate. You have a target (say the Iranians or Russians) who are importing computers for what we think are clandestine actions - nuclear proliferation, annexing Crimea, etc.) so we go ahead and intercept the computer shipment, add the coding enabling the NSA to bug those computers, and then resume the shipment.

It gives the NSA and nat’l security agencies access they otherwise wouldn’t have, and it’s all totally legal against foreign targets (and with warrants, against US citizens).

I imagine that, if the GOP truly do take the Senate next year, one of the first things out of the gate will be Boehner dashing the current Senate’s immigration reform plan’s head in with a large wrench and then reintroducing his “bit-by-bit” plan with the “pathway to citizenship” taken out behind the shed and shot.

It’s all about getting the gas to Europe and money back to Russia. Even if Europe imposes sanctions, they won’t refuse Russia’s gas, which they need. The Ukrainians know this, also, and if they can cut off Russia’s supply lines, they have a bargaining tool.

So technically, you should be able to pop open any router and find one of these devices, just compare it to the specs and verify the part numbers and schematics for the unaltered device

Should be easy enough to find the post production module.

Western corporate bosses pull out of Russian economic forum

reuters.com

(Reuters) - Around a dozen chief executives and chairmen of major U.S. and European corporations have withdrawn from an economic conference in Russia as pressure between Moscow and the West grows over the crisis in Ukraine.

(snip)

“Only one company said their executive’s decision to stay away was because of political tensions with most declining to give a reason. The cancellations, however, coincide with the United States and Europe considering further sanctions on Moscow over violence in eastern Ukraine, which western governments have blamed in part on Russia.

(snip)

“The chief executives of oil producer ConocoPhillips, jet maker Airbus Group, Visa Inc, Aluminum group Alcoa, Siemens, Citigroup, Morgan Stanley, International Paper Company, Pepsi, Italian oil group Eni and the chairman of consulting group Bain & Company are among those no longer scheduled to attend the forum.” More

The German from the Volga Germans who immigrated to Kansas (and a couple of other states) is different from the German of Texas. Dutch German is found more commonly in northeastern states like New York, though you can also find large Bavarian enclaves in that state as well.

In general, though, where the map says “German” it’s German, not Dutch.

He saw Glenn remove his hat, and the quick movement combined with Glenn’s bald head, may have thrown Kenny off.

More on the Greenwald BS.

From CBC.

American journalist Glenn Greenwald is accusing the U.S. National Security Agency of breaking into tech hardware to install surveillance bugs before the products are shipped to unsuspecting global customers, in a new book about the NSA’s mass surveillance practices.

Greenwald, who broke the story of intelligence whistleblower Edward Snowden, sat down with CBC’s chief correspondent Peter Mansbridge to discuss previously unseen documents in an interview airing Tuesday night on The National.

Greenwald’s new book, No Place to Hide: Edward Snowden, the NSA and the U.S. Surveillance State, comes out on Tuesday.

The NSA practice is called supply-chain interdiction, in which the agency intercepts U.S.-made products such as routers and servers manufactured by companies such as Cisco. The hardware is physically implanted with beacons before being factory repackaged and shipped to unaware consumers around the world.

Outrage update: Why did Hillary Clinton wear those glasses after her concussion?

Rove’s comment that when Clinton appeared in public after recuperating “she’s wearing glasses that are only for people who have traumatic brain injury,” referred to a lens or lenses that the former first lady wore for a short period after her concussion and a subsequent blood clot that developed in her brain. Known as a Fresnel prism, the device helps treat double vision, especially for close-up viewing, experts said.

Special lines in the prism bend light seen by one eye and align it with the image seen by the other, according to Galetta and a representative of the company that distributes the lenses. The prism can be in the form of a clear plastic overlay that is pasted to the lens of eyeglasses in cases, such as Clinton’s, when the double vision is expected to be temporary, or can be ground into the lens for longer-term use, according to Laura Balcer, director of the Concussion Center at NYU Langone medical center. When built into the eyeglass lens itself, the prism is not visible, Balcer said.

If they know a particular terrorist target is ordering a router on the internet they’re already being tracked or listened in upon. They’d have to. If they called in the order they’d have to already be listening in on his calls. Only other way would be the NSA is tracking router or server orders from the manufacturer. So some guy in Yemen is going to order a router from the USA?

The targets might not necessarily be terrorists - one possibility could be an organization that’s placed so that some kind of targeted communication will go through its servers or routers.

Wireless routers are definitely a consumer item these days, though.

re: #273 wrenchwench

Article doesn’t mention it, but usually in cases like this alcohol is involved. It was when a 9 year old was shot near here several years back. He’s OK, but not 100% recovered.

Turkey hunting is easily the most dangerous kind of hunting, every year turkey season results in more firearms injuries than any other game season. It’s the combination of a relatively small, somewhat camouflaged target and stalking through the woods, usually camouflaged, making calls of the very prey whose calls you are ostensibly responding to that makes it so fucked up. It leads to situations where hunters are unknowingly stalking other hunters, while wearing camouflage, though these two guys should have been in each other’s known no shoot directions.

People will take more time setting up a shot on an elk or deer, aiming for the heart, but they’ll just slap the trigger when they think the bead of a shotgun is generally over a turkey whose calls they’ve been following for some time. Ducks are usually shot from a blind or a relatively fixed location, rabbits and geese out in the open.

I don’t even like eating turkey, but even if I did I wouldn’t hunt them on anything but well marked private property. Even then I’d be nervous unless the parcel was huge and the property lines far away.

12 yrs ago Greenwald has a “corporate interest” in the distribution of porn videos and playing the sleazy lawyer bit in NYC.

He’s always been on the make, ruthless in his dealings with others, and this time, if he doesn’t go to jail as a co-conspirator with Snowden, he’s set to rake in millions from his latest ventures.

Oddly, this Buzzfeed article portrays him not as a go-for-the-throat predator but more as a misunderstood, sympathetic victim.

Detained at 10.15am, released at 12.20pm and cycled home where he immediately began tweeting about arrest
Baldwin - who once considered running for Mayor of New York - tweeted: ‘New York City is a mismanaged carnival of stupidity that is desperate for revenue and anxious to criminalize behavior once thought benign’
He became enraged because police officers were ‘too young to recognize him’

Other countries have free speech and they’re not covered by our constitution. Speech can be infringed by fear, threats, intimidation, economic or social pressure by citizens without government involvement. The 1st amendment only covers the government’s role in free speech.

I don’t understand why students who have paid some four years of tuition to a University have some obligation to hear nonsensical dumbshittery from a borderline war criminal on their graduation day if they don’t want to. If the students and faculty are united in opposition to such a speaker there’s no valid “free speech” lesson the administration needs to force upon them via executive fiat.

University Presidents and their, bureaucratic, dysfunctional administrations are frequently responsible for the worst, most frustrating aspects of college life anywhere. The idea that their whimsical idiotic commencement speaker choices should be indulged, respected, or honored at all simply because it comes from a position of nominal leadership is fucking ridiculous.

Hey Kilgore…did you know Chris “Tweety” Matthews gave the commencement address at Ohio State University?

And yeah…there was all kinds of bitching and moaning about that. I guess it goes both ways anymore.

And for this year, the Students had no input…along with him being a liberal.

“The response from students is simply that we don’t know who this guy is, we don’t care about this guy,” Stepp said. “And the fact that Mr. Matthews obviously has a very liberal leaning and he’s not even a public official was irksome to me.”

My ideal commencement, as it really ought to be for the graduates and their family:

1) band plays, everyone enters.
2) head of school stands up, declares the graduates graduates.
3) at small schools people can file up to the podium and get their diploma, otherwise graduates just stand up.
4) head dismisses everyone
5) band plays

Less than an hour, not too boring.

North Carolina homeowner grabs AR-15, shoots armed intruder during firefight (VIDEO)

A North Carolina homeowner grabbed his AR-15 and shot an intruder that kicked in his door Monday morning.

The incident occurred around 9:45 a.m. when the intruder knocked on Jonathan Haith’s front door. Thinking it was just neighborhood kids playing around, he ignored it. Moments later there was a loud bang in the laundry room, so Haith grabbed the AR-15 he keeps under his bed and went to check the scene.

There was an exchange of gunfire and the intruder was hit and then fled on foot. He ran across the street, where he collapsed in a church parking lot.

The suspect’s accomplice was parked outside Haith’s residence, but sped away when he saw his partner wounded and running.

But Vance County police arrested the suspect and were able to catch up with the accomplice as well.

Earlier today, the droolies ran one of their usual hate-the-black-man posts, which is now up to near 1000 comments:

White family stalked, pummeled by black mob

Sound’s ominous, eh? And they claimed:

A family of eight, “just enjoying their Mother’s Day weekend in Savannah,” were savagely attacked by an unknown number of blacks in the Georgia city, that left several family members injured, including a 6-year-old girl who was “punched in the stomach.”

Well, here’s the actual story as linked in that drooly piece:

Family allegedly attacked on River Street

And here is supposedly a copy of one of the police reports:

facebook.com

That report makes it sound more like men fighting, with two of the supposed victims also having alcohol.

Furthermore, an additional news story has come out:

SCMPD: Altercation Involving Atlanta Family Not a Random Act

The Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Department has released a statement concerning a weekend incident on River Street that involved a family from Atlanta.

The family spoke to the Atlanta TV station WSB, claiming they were attacked by a “mob” of people and that even women and children were attacked, including a 6-year old girl who was punched in the stomach. However, SCMP say after reviewing the surveillance video they have determined the incident was a fight between two families, and there was, “no sign of a 6-year-old or 13-year-old child being punched.

Furthermore, if you go to that last link you will be able to view the surveillance video. What the droolies left out is that it was a fairly busy intersection, and as for the “mob” - nearly all people in the area are just standing around or avoiding the fight by walking around it.

While striking another person is a crime, the droolie story totally miscasts the event into a race war.

I wonder why?

Mr. Haith has an interesting past.

Jonathan Haith, against whom all drug charges were dropped

The dismissal was filed on February 24, 2010. According to the dismissal document, the case was dismissed “in the interest of justice”.

Three charges had been pending against Haith: felony possession with intent to manufacture, sell, and deliver a Schedule I controlled substance, felony manufacture of a Schedule I controlled substance, and felony possession of a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a school.

Looks like he’d been mixed up in some dirty shit in the not too distant past.

Chief K.L. Sidwell reports that members of the Henderson Police Department’s Narcotics Unit performed a vehicle stop on the public vehicular area of Kids World located at 420 Red Oak Road in Henderson, North Carolina on September 15, 2009.

During the investigation, the driver of the vehicle was detained. A search of the vehicle resulted in the recovery of a felonious amount of heroin and prescription pills.

The investigation tends to show that the suspect listed below was involved in the sale and distribution of heroin. The investigation is continuing and more arrests are pending.

Jonathan Haith 09-16-09
Jonathan Haith, arrested on heroin-related charges
Jonathan Haith, 31
2227 Thomas Lane
Henderson, North Carolina
Charges: Possession with the intent to manufacture, sell, and deliver heroin, manufacture of heroin, possession of heroin within 1,000 feet of a daycare
Court date: November 16, 2009
Bond: $70,000

Guy probably rolled over on his supplier or something and that’s why the charges were later dropped.

That’s what WND does, stoke racial tensions. It’s been clear since the start, but to me the proof positive was how that site ‘reported’ on “flash mobs” and others such in New York and Philadelphia and then said nothing about how the police in both cities swiftly adjusted to prevent such crimes, along with Mayor Nutter of Philly’s forceful denunciation of such crimes. Mayor Nutter is a black Democrat, and WND’s failure to credit him or his police with anything says all that needs to said about Weird Nut Daily.
