Glenn Greenwald: Being Called a Traitor Is a “Badge of Honor”

A testament to the wonderfulness of the Mighty Greenwald
Weird • Views: 29,533

MSNBC

In this short clip from Pete Williams’ Meet the Press interview this morning, Williams asks Glenn Greenwald two questions about his reaction to being called a “traitor,” and Greenwald replies that he considers it “a badge of honor.”

Notice that the questions Williams asked came from ordinary folks on Twitter and Facebook, but Greenwald’s answer is that he’s called a traitor because he’s speaking truth to power — implying what? That the people who asked the questions are mindless subservient sheep doing the bidding of a brutal national surveillance state?

Greenwald: It is always the case that people who bring unwanted disclosure that makes people in power uncomfortable are called traitors, and I look at that really as a badge of honor. I think it’s a testament to the fact that we’re doing our jobs.

What a totally bullshit statement because no, not everyone who is a genuine whistleblower is a traitor. Snowden stole secret govt documents and “sold” them to the highest bidder, his accomplices, Greenwald and Poitras.

I also am beginning to think that Omidyar may have been previously involved even more than we have been led to believe. It only took him from June to Oct—just 4 months—to finalize a deal with Greenwald for the moribund start-up, “First Look” and offer $250M as seed money.

Little Eddie Snowden and Griftin’ Glenn Greenwald.

To an egomaniac like Glenn Greedwald, John Q. Public is only righteous as long as he agrees with and supports Glenn Greenwald. If J.Q. Public faults Glenn Greenwald for a wrong or disagrees strongly with a conclusion Greenwald has reached, then he instantly changes from one of the People to one of the “sheeple”.

Glenn Greenwald’s blind spot on racism and sexism

Glenn Greenwald has provided some of the most important analysis and journalism of the past decade. He continues to play an important role in our national discourse. But he is wrong on the issues of racism and sexism and how they impact our national political discussion. I hope he can learn to see the error of his analysis.

Badge of honor?
The Stalin prize used to come with one of those as well as a big pile of gold (aircraft designer Alex Yakovlev received $120,000 in 1940), a luxury dacha, and a new car. Yakovlev received a Pontiac Silver Chief which, though cool, would probably not be available.

Greenwald is neither a woman or a racial minority, so those are not his concerns (his concerns are his bank account).

Now, another reason he dismisses those concerns is also to keep his attacks open. He’s not the sharpest tool in the shed, so he has to cling to anything that he can use to attack.

Not that Greenwald doesn’t reverse himself and deny his original position.

To be a traitor, you sort of have to exploit and violate the implicit or explicit trust of the mother country. Really yank the rug out from under everyone’s feet. Be dishonest; pretend to be something you’re not.

It’s plainly obvious that Glenn has no higher loyalty than to himself. Not a sellout; just for sale.

Meanwhile, the military offensive in the Brazilian favelas continues to attract zero commentary from GG. I guess he, too, wants the howling slums across the fence from his digs cleaned up in time for the World Cup, whatever the cost.

Btw, I ran across this tidbit recently:
Brazil to boost World Cup security with unmanned Hermes 900
Brazil has operated the smaller Hermes 450 drone for several years. These aren’t known to be armed but the 900’s payload is 300 kg and arming them with any of several Brazilian made guided weapons would be a simple matter. I wonder if the Brazilians have declared a no-drone zone around GG’s pad to keep from unduly alarming their most famous guest.

GG’s pernicious-yet-silent embrace of the Brazilian police state is probably the most concise and damning argument that can possibly be made about his cause, and so I raise it at nearly every opportunity.

To move to a place like that and then weep and moan about the horrors of your old government is more than a little bit disgusting.

A rare but mild scolding of Greenwald on the Dkos front page
Glenn Greenwald’s blind spot on racism and sexism

From that post:

From Glenn Greenwald (0+ / 0-)
Hi Armando - As you know, I respect your work as well, but my views have not been fairly or accurately represented here at all.

Here are 2 statements, both of which I agree with:

(1) Anti-semitism is a serious problem, and some opposition to Israel is motivated by anti-semitism.

(2) Neocons cynically exploit accusations of antisemitism to discredit legitimate, fair-minded critics of Israel.

To assert (2) is not to negate (1). I believe both. Similarly:

(1) Racism is a serious problem, and some opposition to Obama is motivated by racism.

(2) Some Democrats cynically exploit accusations of racism to discredit legitimate, fair-minded critics of Obama.

To assert (2) is not to negate (1). I believe both. Similarly:

(1) Sexism is a serious problem, and some opposition to Hillary Clinton will be motivated by sexism.

(2) Some Democrats will cynically exploit accusations of sexism to discredit legitimate, fair-minded critics of Hillary Clinton.

To assert (2) is not to negate (1).

Your entire post is based on a logical fallacy: that because I asserted (2) (“Opposition to her is going to be depicted as misogynistic, like opposition to Obama has been depicted as racist”) then it must mean that I believe none of the opposition to Obama and Clinton are based on racism and sexism.

I’m well aware that some opposition to Obama and Clinton are motivated by those things and nothing I said suggested otherwise. I’ll grant that it could have been stated more clearly - this was an oral interview over many days, not a carefully written essay - but I think the meaning is nonetheless clear.

From that post:

dailykos.com

Who the hell knows if it is him or not, I don’t think it is condescending enough to be him.

“Greenwald does us and himself a disservice by accepting the corrosive notion that we can not recognize that racism and sexism impact even the most powerful in our society, while at the same time being able to substantively critique powerful persons of color, women and other members of minority groups. It is not true.

“Greenwald also misunderstands the powerful and reasonable allegiance that minority groups will have towards one of their own who advocates and understands their concerns. Thus Greenwald dismissively writes “women in America are going to be completely invested in her candidacy”—as if Clinton’s longstanding and persistent advocacy for womens’ rights would have nothing to do with it. It was slighting and frankly, sexist. (Of course, this is also true for President Obama and African Americans.)”

This is important, because Greenwald tries to get us into the trap of thinking that no one inside a “group” ever criticizes one of their own.

That is really a condescending, wrong-headed assumption. If he got out more, he’d hear those criticisms. But OTOH, I think he’s being more than just dishonest.

I suspect that Stanley Sea will be the first openly gay player to be cut by a NFL team. I really think that he’s undersized for the Pro game, and some articles have suggest that his work ethic may not be the best. On the other hand, he was the, if memory serves me, SCC Defensive Player of the Year, so he may have the flexibility to adjust into a special teams or limited use player.

Who knows. He’s no different than hundreds of other players who were good to great in college, some have what it takes to play at the highest level, some just can’t make the cut. Not good, not bad, just the way it is.

Gah, my kids grew up without seat belts. We used to hold babies in our arms in the front seat. There were the lap belts first, which no one actually used and it seems it took forever after the law was passed in NC to get used to the shoulder/lap harnesses in 1985. You still don’t have to have seat belts on in the back seat, but children must be in proper restraints for their age and/or weight.

No disrespect to the man, but Michael Sam won’t have earned that roar until he proves he can make it in the NFL. Ignoring the preseason, his first chance on October 13th, when the Rams play the 49er’s. If he can make good plays against San Francisco’s offense, he’ll have shown the talent he’ll need to stay in the league. The NFC West has two powerhouse offenses, the Seahawks being the other, and the Rams will of course play both times times. It will be interesting to see if Michael Sam gets playing time in those games and how well he does.

There is one other measure of talent Sam can show, as the Rams play both the Broncos and the Giants this coming season. With New York having upgraded its o-line, those teams will provide the second challenge:

Should Michael Sam be able to sack either Manning brother, then he will have shown a sign of true greatness.

Sorry, but sacking Eli or Peyton is not showing greatness. Neither one of them can move an inch in the pocket with the clay feet they both possess. Wanna impress me as a seventh round pick? Go sack Kaepernick or Wilson, which he’ll get a chance to do twice each a season as the Rams play in their division. He has to make the team first, of course.

re: #82 Killgore Trout

That video you posted suggests the big difference is the infrastructure required to separate bike traffic from motorized traffic, and the Dutch seem to be more public-spirited in their approach to spending money on the paths.
They do have the advantage of much shorter distances.

And Godzilla comes close, but falls 1.8 million dollars short of Captain America: The Winter Soldier’s 95 million dollar opening weekend.

For those who have seen this version of Godzilla, is it worth seeing?

A lot of people liked it, but I found it to be very slowly paced for the first half, the characters were flat and 1 dimensional, and even allowing for the gigantic suspense of belief you make going into a monster movie, I found the plot holes and wild jumps to be over the top.

FWIW, I actually found myself looking at my watch to see how close it was to being done. Worst part…. Godzilla has gotten really fat. Looks like William Shatner.

It’s not so much that they move (though Eli has had some impressive dodges in his career), its that they both act as a force multiplier for a decent or better offense (with Peyton having the greater effect in this aspect) and catching them by surprise is quite hard; They almost always are be able to get the ball away before they can be hit.

93 Stanley Sea  May 18, 2014 5:30:09pm

Two huge companies, ATT and Comcast will have a nearly complete stranglehold on cable/satellite content/delivery and internet access and it’s a big ho-hum. Do I also need to mention that they both rate at or near the bottom in customer satisfaction in their respective fields?

We’ll see what people think a year from now when their rates for everything take a big hike and internet throttling is just business as usual because what are you going to do about it.

re: #160 First As Tragedy, Then As Farce

I’m not much of a sports fan, but aside from a small number of Olympic events that I only cars about every 4 years, hockey is the only sport I could actually sit through for the whole game. The few baseball games I’ve ever seen seem to consist of 3 minutes of actual game activity, followed by 20 minutes of the coach shooting the shit with the pitcher, after which there will be another 3 minutes of activity. ZzzzzzZzz.

Baseball was actually better 65 yrs ago. My dad took me to a couple of games in Buffalo and I thought they were great. The most exciting one was where Hopalong Cassidy made an appearance, though. Hey, I was 8 or 9 at the time. : )

Love the color in the stone in the bottom shot

That’s probably why I took the shot. Blue sky behind it and the light was good for making the color stand out.

My brother knew what it was geologically and had a general idea where it had been quarried. If I recall correctly it’s a dolomite (metamorphized limestone) and it contains visible fossil traces.

I prefer the first one. It has a strong central focus and interest area. The second one, to me, is a bit ‘blah’. The out-of-focus foreground overpowers the in-focus image. I like the position of the cat better in the First one too, it more closely parallels the position of the cat in the poster.

But that’s just me, and I think the Pontiac Aztec was cool looking.

What the fresh hell is wrong with this idiot? I defy him to come where I live and ride a bike with no helmet AND roll through red lights and all the 4 way stops in the area. We have a few miles of bike lanes around here, but I sold my bike when my son was little because the area has become so busy and the roads have gone from 2 lanes to 4.

Seriously, if you’re really THAT offended by wearing a helmet maybe you should just stick to driving a car. Oh, and try not to run red lights while you’re doing it.

As a bicyclist, do I come to a full and complete stop at every stop sign in a quiet neighborhood? No, I do not.

But I am damned careful to make sure there are no cars around when I do that, and it’s not because I’m afraid of getting hit, or afraid of getting a perfectly legitimate ticket. It’s because nothing makes cycling more dangerous than careless or spiteful drivers, and nothing makes drivers hate bikers more than jackasses who duck through traffic and ignore signals.

Seriously, fuck those people. It takes me a month of careful, illuminated, courteous, DOT-orange-wearing biking to make up for one fuckhead who makes a driver spill coffee on themselves with a rapid lane-change or panic stop.

I don’t know if Vox is trolling for pageviews or something, Malaysia Flight Whatever Number style, but this is really pathetic and rage-inducing. It makes me have to work that much harder to cover for the shitheads.

Things I learned from Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug”:

1) When going on a quest, it is critically important to take along a hobbit. They figure out everything.

2) Closing a door will stop a rampaging bear creature.

3) Orcs are really, really overrated. Sure, they talk a good game, and scowl like your constipated grandmother, but for fierce “take no prisoners” warriors, they don’t really ever seem to kill anyone. Also, they die by the truckload.

4) It’s quite easy to survive a burst of dragonfire. I haven’t quite calculated the relative ease, but it seems to be comparable to outrunning charging Wargs when you’re on foot.

5) Evangeline Lilly is really elfing hot, if you get my drift.

6) A novel that you never want to end and a movie where you go “When the hell does this thing end?” are not the same thing.

So I will have to bake some extra rolls without egg in them. I have this recipe with whole wheat and butternut squash that I have been waiting to try out.

When one is faced with the decision to continuously attack an entity that celebrates freedom and is by definition an open society (despite its warts) like the USA and ignore a truly authoritarian espionage-based system like Putin’s Russia or a Plutocratic China, this is not bravery. This is called cowardice.

Spoke to my son in NC a little while ago. He went to his first NASCAR event in Charlotte this weekend. *whimper*

I told him that if he ever votes Republican he can consider himself disowned. //

Yup, it’s here.

He’ll be fine. I’ve been to one and survived.

I love car racing. I used to watch F1, Champ and IRL.

Never voted conservative.

Yep, runs here too. At least on the internet it does (I never watch shows on TV).

Unreal. This guy tried to tell me I was misrepresenting an article by quoting its exact headline word for word.

This is why I have a very itchy block finger on Twitter. There’s no point with some of these people.

Hey, if all he did was go to a NASCAR race, count yourself lucky. ;-P

Seriously, it’s one thing to watch a race on TV, but another altogether to be at the track in the stands; I’ve watched races at a couple of the short tracks here in Nashville (Fairgrounds Speedway and Highland Rim Speedway) and, while it’s been years since I’ve gone to one, it’s a total blast.

From a blog.

I’m starting a blog called 420NO MARIJUANA KILLS and I’ll post a bunch of jibber-jabber that “1000 people died in Denver today from pot overdoses” and “Accidental ingestion of poison pot smoke will require a blood transfusion so you don’t go insane.” Stuff like that. Because blogs are the forefront of good quality information!

The Twitter hashtag #420NO is pretty hysterical in this respect.

I was amazed with all the noise that some fans could go to sleep while they waited a few dozen laps for someone to make a move.

That’s what he said, that it’s SO different from TV and how they go really, really fast. He said it was some kind All Stars thing where it was only the best drivers and the number of laps were shorter than usual (or something like that).

That may happen at races on superspeedways like Talledega, but I’ve never seen it happen at any short track race I’ve been at.

re: #263 TedStriker

I saw it at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. Long, long races.

It’s all quite primal…the sounds, the smells, the action on the track and in the pits, the fans in the stands. Even at a really small short track (like Highland Rim Speedway here, a short oval only 1/3 of a mile long), there’s just a certain something.

The other strange NASCAR thing I recall were the groups of anti-fans who stood up every lap to yell “Kyle Busch sucks!”

See, that’s why I wouldn’t want to go to a superspeedway race…too long and drawn out.

He mentioned something about the crowds and about walking across some sort of bridge/footpath that swayed because of all the people. I think—as soon as he said NASCAR my eyes kinda glazed over and I only heard about every 3rd word ‘cause I was suddenly preoccupied with imagining him morphing into a knuckle-dragging, wingnut marching on DC and sending me Fwd:Fwd:Fwd emails about HAARP & Freemasons & chemtrails. LOL

Well, at least we know now why OAS was a flop—they were all at NASCAR! //

Have a good night, lizards.

I’m so old I still associate “OAS” with the Organisation de l’armée secrète, a very nasty French terrorist gang that opposed Algerian independence in the early 1960s.
The OAS operated mostly within the French army and had few if any scruples about its methods. They tried to assassinate President Charles DeGaulle and writer Jean-Paul Sartre and did assassinate many others. At one point in 1962, the OAS was setting off more than a hundred bombs a day. They gleefully massacred Arabs and routinely killed french civilians and fellow French soldiers. One fight between OAS gunmen and loyal troops resulted in 35 fatalities. The organization was eventually broken up and its members imprisoned. Several OAS hitmen were executed but the leaders, including General Raoul Salan, got off lightly in comparison to the atrocities they had committed. Salan was sentenced to death, but this was commuted to life imprisonment. He was released in 1968 and re-instated in the army at his former rank in 1982. He died of natural causes in 1984.
In later years, OAS veterans were a factor in many, many anti-insurgency and subversion operations in Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East.
The OAS still has a supposed presence in French right wing circles. It is generally “credited” with inventing the car bomb, or at least popularizing it.

re: #35 Testy Toad T

The emerged Libertarian ideal is that there should be no such thing as “countries” anyway. Anything that weakens the concept of “country” or “nation” is worthy of advancing, even if other countries’ Intelligence and punishment methods and like Russia or China go far beyond what is acceptable in the US. It negates the inconvenience of having to play the moral equivalency game. It is the ultimate Utopia of Dudebro Libertarians.

It is the “citizen of the world” concept re-imagined and packaged for the hard right wing, in Bizzaro-world.
