At the 9/11 Memorial

Come kids, I want to show you where your grandfather’s name is…
History • Views: 50,500

This isn’t the first time I’ve been inside the WTC since the 9/11 attacks, particularly since I’ve been taking PATH since shortly after service was restored in November 2003. But it is the first time I’ve seen the completed 9/11 Memorial in person.

The fencing surrounding the memorial was taken down over the weekend and you no longer need to get a timed pass to enter the memorial (the 9/11 Museum is a separate issue, with a $24 admission fee imposed).

So, here are a few pictures taken earlier today of the memorial.

My observations of the memorial? The enormity of the attacks is hammered home by row after row of names, of those responding to the towers and to the thousands caught inside the towers or the planes that struck them. If you focus on the sound of the waterfalls, it is a serene oasis in the heart of a busy and bustling rebirth of Lower Manhattan.

But the most moving part is what you can occasionally overhear.

“Come kids, I want to show you where your grandfather’s name is…”

Considering that so many people have never been able to bury remains of their loved ones - more than a thousand people have never been identified from the remains that have been gathered at the site, these names are a silent tribute and memorial.

I’m so, so very glad that I didn’t have any friends/family who were lost in the attacks. There’s one person I knew who died in the towers: Mohammed Shajahan, who was a Bangladeshi immigrant who ran a gas station in my neighborhood where I grew up until he got a degree in information systems and got a job doing IT with Marsh & McLennan (I think). He left a wife and young kids behind. His story is as American as apple pie, until the part where the religious nutcases came to destroy it.

And yes, Pam Geller, Muslims can aspire to the American dream too, and they too were victims on 9/11.

Those photos were all taken on my Motorola Droid Razr Maxx. It was actually the panorama mode (which worked for a change).

I’m actually going to head back there with my regular gear (Canon 60D) at a later date to get some other shots, and to show progress on the rest of the site from the new vantages afforded by the opening of the memorial.

Those were really quite good shots, LH.

I watched every minute of what went on that day; it was surrreal, unbelievable. We were paralyzed in front of the TV like so many millions of others (my son was off work that day).

Pretty sure that the fact that W didn’t show up for the dedication of the memorial will be exploited by the troofers.

Your comment about the grandfathers name really got me. I think I’m just sick of the complainers, the infighting etc. To me that is sacred ground that best illustrates a very compelling lesson about what hate does to humanity. Nothing lasts forever but I’d hope to see that same building there, teaching us that lesson in a hundred years and more.

12 HappyWarrior  May 19, 2014 11:23:26am

These are touching photos LH. Honestly I can’t think of the 9/11 tragedy and not think of my kid brother. He was born that year and I’ve had the opportunity to watch not him grow up but him and many of his friends since I coach basketball in the winter months and score baseball here in the spring. It just makes me think about I guess how different our childhoods were. I think in a way mine was more innocent than his. Certainly we had terrorist attacks before 9/11 but 9/11 was something that hit really close to come especially if you live in the DC or NY area.

Most people just ignore ‘em. A few look on them like circus freaks, and then move on. Most people are just trying to get to/from work, or to/from the memorial/museum area.

There’s plenty of security in the memorial/museum area, so I’m not sure what rules they’ve got in place about selling those brochures (or even handing them out there).

I just imagine how I’d deal with assholes like that had I survived. That’s the thing that pisses me off when people try to trivalize real horrors like 9-11, the marathon bombing, or the Holocaust when they try to claim an Obama policy they dislike is like that. Just sickening.

Yeah, see Kragar up at #5.

There’s a part of me that wants to go over there on Wednesday and confront these people, not in a threatening way, of course, but it a “you really think this?” kind of way. I’m guessing the majority of people who profess to believe 9/11 conspiracy theories haven’t really thought about it. They just distrust the Bush administration (not wrongly, of course) and are being preyed upon by charlatans.

re: #33 Iwouldprefernotto

You’re not. I’ve long said it should be free, and that the Memorial/Museum be turned over to the NPS for curating, maintaining, and securing. The NPS can do the job better, and with less overhead than the Memorial Foundation.

The museum was able to open only after Mayor Bloomberg donated a bunch of money, and the admission fee covers only part of the overhead cost.

So, when you hear politicos complaining about the admission fee, tell them to make the funds available in the NPS budget to make it happen. Or if they’re NYS politicos, make a line item in the state budget to cover the costs.

It is a site and museum that should be free for all to visit and understand what happened on 9/11, who perpetrated the attacks, and who were the victims of al Qaeda on that day.

I lived right next door to the Fire Station on E 2nd St. I said hello to them every day as I walked to work in the morning. They lost 6 men and both of their fire engines. By the next day they had pulled the wrecked Co. sign off the side of one of the smashed trucks and leaned it up against the outside wall of the firehouse. A huge memorial of flowers went up around the sign to the point you had to walk into the street to get around the flowers and tributes.

It pains me that after the attacks I never again saw some familiar faces I’d seen every day there in front of the station. The photos of those 6 men hung outside the station for months undisturbed. I learned throughout this that the will to inflict pain and suffering can never be allowed to triumph over the will to explore, to learn, to experiment, to develop, and to love.

He was arrested in 2003 in Britain, and in 2005, the Muslim Association of Britain took over the mosque, sacked the board of directors (Hamza’s buddies), and ran Hamza’s followers in the congregation out.

On the other hand, the MAB also organized a speaking tour of the UK for Anwar al-Awlaki back in 2007. Yeesh……not something I’d do, that’s for damned sure.

Judge overturns Measure 36, legalizing same-sex marriage in Oregon

A federal judge on Monday struck down Oregon’s voter-approved ban on gay marriage, saying it is unconstitutional.

U.S. District Judge Michael McShane said the ban unconstitutionally discriminates against same-sex couples and ordered the state not to enforce it. State officials earlier refused to defend the constitutional ban in court.

McShane joined judges in seven other states who have struck down gay marriage bans, though appeals are underway.

Describing the 9/11 site as “New York’s hottest tourist attraction” is very jarring.

Yeah, but just because a lot of people are visiting doesn’t mean that they aren’t treating it with solemn respect. I mean, Auschwitz and Gettysburg get a lot of tourists too, but that doesn’t make either a hot party zone.

That being said, why the hell is there a gift shop?

There’s a motherfucking gift shop?!

Stop the world. I want off.

I get that there’s a gift shop, because they have to fund the museum/memorial operations somewhere (there’s no public funding for it otherwise).

How do you suppose it is funded, when the feds and GOP refuse to fund it, and NYS doesn’t have a budget line for it?

It’s going to come from admission fees and gift shop sales. Sad, but that’s where it’s at.

92 dog philosopher  May 19, 2014 1:02:50pm

New York’s hottest tourist attraction

an aspect of it from the point of view of a native of NYC (even though i have undergone the formal conversion to being a californian) is that it marks the re-integration of NYC into the rest of the united states

california it seems has taken the place of NYC as the area of the u.s. that wingnuts hate the most

And up in Oregon,

Judge overturns Measure 36, legalizing same-sex marriage in Oregon

katu.com

It’s amazing how fast this is moving. I’m going to make a prediction that in 5 years SSM will be legal across the entire country. In some cases by the will of the people, and in some case by the courts holding that equal protection clause holds.

In any case, it doesn’t affect me, I have no desire to get involved in a SSM, heck I h’ve got no desire to get involved in ANY kind of marriage, but it does impact people I know and care about. Pretty much a foregone conclusion that my neck of the woods (Tennessee) will be one of the last of the group to realize that the times, they are a-changing.

Going in some ways means wrestling with the very real, raw emotions I still remember from that morning, with the pain I saw on classmates’ faces as they were looking for information about family or - in at least one case - got the bad news.

I know that for some people, the memorial is a very important place for their healing, and I don’t begrudge them that. I just don’t know when I’m going to be able to bring myself to see it.

They’d have a hard time calling that ‘immodest’ dress.

ah…but they can fall back on “Not wearing Gender Appropriate Clothing”, since women aren’t supposed to dress like men.

There’s always an angle…. it’s like Catch-22. It’s a hell of a Catch, that Catch-22.

My high school had red caps n gowns for girls and black ones for boys. I thought the red looked bogus, so I put my order in for black. The secretary who was handing them out when I picked mine up had a daughter in my class and said, ‘there must be a mistake’. I told her no, I ordered black. She said, ‘You can’t do that!’ The principal came out. By that time, he knew me, he knew my mom, he knew our lawyer friends, and he said, ‘Yes she can.’

We call them chips here too.

Here’s a picture of Regina. Just to show how frikken flat it is here.

Regina

been there

reminds me of driving thru Kansas or Nebraska. You can actually see a city off in the distance miles and miles away. Drive an hour, and it doesn’t appear to be any closer!

There’s a bend on RTE 80 going thru Nebraska after you leave Lincoln heading west. You can actually see the bend about an hour and a half before you get there!!

No, Regina is the queen city.

I thought Cincinnati was the “Queen” City… At least that’s what Dr. Johnny Fever told me.

Is that why we have no butthurt from Bryan Fischer about Oregon?

C’mon wingnuts, we’ve got a violently active volcano in Mt. St. Helens sitting right across the Columbia River from Portland. Since you all seem to know exactly what God is thinking about gays, can’t you tell us exactly when he plans to make St. Helens explode Toba-style and destroy both Washington and Oregon for their wickedness?

Yeah. Again, re: Nebraska and Kansas. 1st time driving thru, I could not believe how many miles and miles and miles (and miles and miles and miles) we would drive without seeing anything but corn fields on both sides of the (flat) highway

Those aren’t mountains though. The valley is cut into the flat prairie so the hills are only 100ft high or so

I don’t think I can make myself go into the museum part. But I would like to go to the memorial site itself. There are many things I’d like to see in NYC, I’ve never been there and have always wanted to go because it just seems like I should for some reason. But I just don’t think I can bring myself to look at all the broken and sad things there, it doesn’t seem like I have the right to do that for some reason, I’m not sure why.

Several years ago we went to Pearl Harbor when we went to Oahu/Hawaii for vacation. It was beautiful in an odd way. You have to get to the memorial by boat and the crowd we were with were chatty, kids running around, etc. But when we walked into that place above the USS Arizona everyone fell silent. It’s like the magnitude of the place just was, well, THERE, and even the kids began whispering if they spoke at all. There’s a gift shop at Pearl Harbor, but it’s a part of a museum that’s removed from the actual memorial site so it doesn’t seem so, crass?, I guess is the word I’m looking for. We bought some t-shirts and made a donation to a veterans fund.

I get to see corn, wheat, canola, flax, oats, cows and beefalo - but they’re all boring.

When we go to Hawaii, we’re planning on going to the Arizona Memorial. That doesn’t bother me at all.

I think it’s mostly because 9/11 is such a raw topic for me still, that this one is so hard.

Yeah, we have a few of those around here, too. We call them “little mountains”. It’s fairly hilly in places here, the farther north and west you get.

Maybe 50 yrs out the 9/11 site will be like Pearl Harbor is, more reverent and less touristy feeling. I hope so.

Rent a car and go to the North Shore if you go to Oahu, it’s so pretty. So is Haunama Bay Nature Preserve. And go to the Big Island and see Volcanos National Park, it’s totally worth it. That’s probably the biggest trip I’ll ever take, but if you can see as many of the islands as possible, you should go for it.
