Slap Fight of the Day: Wikileaks vs Pernicious G

Assange: “Firstlook is acting like a bunch of racists”
Humor • Views: 37,001

Today on Twitter this happened: Julian Assange, who most people believe is the one behind the @Wikileaks account, threw a huge tantrum because Glenn Greenwald redacted the name of a country from his latest disingenuous article. Greenwald says he was convinced publishing the country’s name would lead to deaths. Assange doesn’t give a shit about that, of course.

There are some inadvertently hilarious moments here; Wikileaks’s Jacob Appelbaum says redacting the country “makes Wikileaks look extreme.” I almost fell out on that one. And then there’s the tweet in which Assange basically calls everyone in Greenwald’s crew “a bunch of racists.” And it all ends with Assange issuing a super-villain threat to release the country’s name “in 72 hours.”

Scroll through the collection below to see what it looks like when extreme libertarians have a purity war.

So why is Wikileaks waiting 72 hours?

22 wrenchwench  May 19, 2014 5:36:14pm

For four countries, ‘they’ decided there was NO risk to innocents. For the fifth, ‘they’ decided ‘we were *very convinced this 1 would —> deaths’. Presumably the arrow indicates causation.

How sure were ‘they’ about the other four?

What will happen in 72 hours when the fifth one is revealed? Who will take the blame?

I wonder if the 72 hours is Wikileaks attempt to see if they can get Greenwald to react and then they can crow about who has the real power between Assange and Greenwald.

But the real hope for me is both groups carry this pissing match out to the point that it hurts both by allowing even more people to figure out that real lives don’t matter in the race to see who has the biggest ego. And hopefully all it costs is their reputations and not lives.

Woman’s car attacked by self-identified ‘high elf’ battling evil

The last thing the woman from Northeast Portland probably expected when she got up Tuesday morning was that she would be attacked by a sword-wielding elf.

But that’s what happened around 7 a.m. as she drove her red BMW by the intersection of Southeast 7th and Morrison.

A man dressed in chain-mail with a helmet, shield and carrying a sword and staff ran into traffic and started attacking her car.

The funny part is that Chipotle wouldn’t care if it was just people carrying a concealed handgun. Even open carry of a pistol might have become accepted. But instead these goofballs had to bring in rifles and make a big show of being armed. As a result, they got asked to stop using Chipotle restaurants as places to strike their Patriot PosesTM.

Maybe it’s just me, but if I owned a restaurant, the only open-carry patrons I’d want would be cops. Everyone else could just leave their weapons at home, or go eat somewhere else. There is no need in a civilized society for civilians to carry firearms while doing their everyday business.

Slight addition, since it should be OK to simply leave the gun locked in the car if you don’t want it in your building. That or a “concealed carry only, please” policy would be your right. As for me, I’m fine with someone carrying a gun iif they’re just carrying the gun, such as a pistol in a holster. But carrying around a rifle like that rubs it in everyone’s face and is just obnoxious. It doesn’t help normalize modern sporting rifles, it just makes people carrying them everywhere look like inconsiderate weirdos.

For all the controversy about CCW, this illustrates an advantage. A concealed gun does not intimidate anyone except perhaps in a healthy way the CCW permitee.

Let just say we have an off duty or out of jurisdiction cop, or a guy that carries cash to deposit and did the whole CCW training program and then more and then more than that. Maybe has to carry a valuable item from one place to a distant one. He gets gas, he eats, he drives across that state, no one bothered at all by that little revolver out of sight.

That’s not a guy that wants to pose. He just wants to pass through on his own business. Posers are dangerous. They get in over their head. Fantasy then awful reality in some incident.

Again we have to see how different this is in town vs way out there in the remote areas of small towns separated by hunting areas. Like Alaska. Ya just can’t lump that in with Seattle. These idiots do exactly that.

THIS. There was a case earlier this year of an off-duty Army sergeant who got in some trouble for carrying a AR-type rifle while on a hike with his son. As he was out in the country and in Texas feral hogs are a danger, his rifle wasn’t a problem, IMO (and ultimately he only had to pay a small fine and his career shouldn’t be harmed). But as you so rightly put it, carrying a rifle into a restaurant is a different matter. That’s not being ready to face a threat, that’s just showing off in a very unpleasant way.

Good article on the situation in Libya and background of the General.

Khalifa Hiftar, the ex-general leading a revolt in Libya, spent years in exile in Northern Virginia

He does seem like a homegrown guy but if he does have foreign backing I wonder if the Egyptian military might be using him to limit the Botherhood’s influence in N. Africa.
His situation is interesting. How much would Western powers move to stop him from cleaning up the Islamists? As long as he doesn’t go nuts with it I don’t think NATO or US would interfere with him.

FTFY.

As I said, there is no need for civilians to carry firearms in a civilized society. We are not living inside a point-and-shoot computer game, or a zombie movie. 99% percent of the time, for everyday life, people just don’t need to carry a firearm, because there’s no need for one.

Bank security guards or police are the exception, though I’ve never seen Brinks guys on a lunch break eating in a restaurant. I suspect they have to get drive-through because they have to stay with their vehicle at all times.

Some folks are uncomfortable around guns. As a restaurant owner, I should have the right to make my place a gun-free zone, because I would want everyone to be comfortable in my restaurant.

Besides, accidents happen.

That big rifle is a WWII-era PTRS and it fires a 14.5x114mm round. It’s good for hunting… if you’re hunting armored personnel carriers. ;)

The smaller rifle in the hands of the man above the trench is an SKS, and that one clearly still has its folding bayonet attached. It fires the same 7.62x39mm round as the AK-47. A member of our forum actually owns one of those.

The MB actually lost the last election. They have only come to power by getting the Half of Parliament not elected on Party List intimidated into following them. There have been very, very frequent assassinations of Anti-MB leaders. They need to be forced out, even if at the end of a gun.

I would say the Egypt should also be given free rein to do whatever is needed to get Heftar to win. After this, I would say that the MB needs to be proscribed across the Middle East.

Hamas video raises concerns of possible train attack

A new train line from Ashkelon to Sderot may be vulnerable to missile fire from the Gaza Strip, a new Hamas video suggests. The video, found by Israeli forces in Gaza, depicts detailed Palestinian surveillance of an Israeli passenger train.

The train line, only a few months old, was built to link the southern city of Sderot to the center of Israel. All the stations are fully protected against missile attacks. But now it has emerged that the Palestinians are monitoring the train line from a vantage point only several hundred meters from the border.

An unnamed official involved in the incident told Israel Hayom that the footage was recovered after a recent arrest of a senior Hamas operative in Gaza.

Anti-tank missiles would indeed pose a major threat. And on open ground the Russian AT-4 (NATO reporting name ‘Spigot’) Hamas has used in the past has a range of over 3000 meters. Wouldn’t even need to hit the train, just the tracks close enough in front of it for the train to be unable to stop.

Gov. Scott Walker’s business claim doesn’t hold up to scrutiny

Walker’s count includes hundreds of nonprofit organizations such as Scout troops, youth athletic leagues and condo associations. It also includes thousands of limited-liability companies that often are set up by real estate investors simply as holding companies for property. Walker’s count, according to PolitiFact, includes out-of-state companies that register in Wisconsin because they might one day want to do business here. And the governor’s list includes start-ups that are barely organized.

That’s not what you’d think, to hear the governor tell it. Walker has suggested that all of the new entities he has recently cited are producing jobs or soon will be. As PolitiFact noted, Walker told a Door County business group in April: “On average — some will do more, some will do less — but if in the next year or so they each add up to 10 new employees, you add that to the more than 100,000 new jobs we’ve created and you see we surpass 250,000 new jobs.”

Walker’s goal, of course, is to deflect attention from his most high-profile campaign promise: The governor promised that Wisconsin companies would create 250,000 net new jobs during his first term. The latest scorecard shows 105,800 jobs have been created, and even the governor’s most ardent supporters realize that he won’t be able to fulfill his promise by the end of his term in January.

Sorry to hear, that is so sad. I was walking home from a bar once I saw a dog get hit by a car. I pet him til he died.

one hot and humid 3am in nyc, so humid there was an impenetrable london fog hanging over the streets, i was lying awake in my father’s apartment on the 36th floor with the window open, drinking in the gloom

there came an unearthly howling moan, a canine sound, that went on and on, but one that could have only been produced by a damaged creature, howled out of torn lungs

there was no place to go to escape it, and no way to see through the impenetrable fog down all the way to the street, no way to do anything but hear it die

Um, no.

Or rather yes, IF it could hit a rail it would create that problem. But hitting that narrow piece of metal that’s shorter than the radius of the missile requires a tricky bit of controller expertise so the missile strikes downward and clears the berm and the tie.

It’s only about a pound of high explosive and the majority of its penetration is due to the shape of the charge. That shape is deflected and wasted on high-angle shots, especially against tamped soil and timber.

Amazing how Wikileaks ignores what Russia does in Wikileaks’ own backyard in Europe. Blind spot wide enough to drive Putin’s FSB through without the slightest look.

Four years ago they had a bit of a trial balloon about Russian corruption leaks which never seemed to go anywhere:

joshuafoust.com

October 26, 2010: Wikileaks founder Julian Assange tells pro-government Izvestia: “We have [compromising materials] about Russia, about your government and businessmen, but not as much as we’d like… We will publish these materials soon.”

November 2, 2010: An official at the Center for Information Security of the FSB, Russia’s secret police, told the independent Russian news website LifeNews “It’s essential to remember that given the will and the relevant orders, [WikiLeaks] can be made inaccessible forever.”

April 17, 2012: Government-funded Russian TV station RT gives Julian Assange his own talk show.

Truthers, birthers, conspiracy theorists of all stripes all over the intertubes.

It used to be that conspiracy nutburgers were isolated - at best, harmless cranks like your crazy aunt or uncle; at worst, standing on soapboxes in parks and raving for all to hear.

Then the internet allowed them new and fertile ground to grow their fetid dreams and connect with other like-minded mentally disturbed individuals.

That’s not to say that aren’t real conspiracies - this article cracked.com clearly shows that. But the vast majority of them, from chemtrails to HAARP to 9/11 and Sandy Hook Truthers - are largely the products of fevered imaginations.

Many years ago, I was doing an English lesson on controversial media - songs, films, TV shows, etc. I pointed out this was nothing new. To illustrate my point, I played “Mack the Knife” - Bobby Darin’s 1959 version, to be specific.

Only one of the students - Pavla - picked up on the lyrics right away. When it was over, she was like, “Oh my God - that song’s about a serial killer!”. The others started ridiculing her, so I said to the class, “No, actually Pavla’s right; maybe not a serial killer per se, but certainly one bad dude.” So I wrote the lyrics on a whiteboard and played the song again.

They were all kind of shocked that a song now considered a jazz standard was so exceedingly dark - and that it was from before their parents were born.

re: #285 Dr Lizardo

BTW, that song is supposed to have first been done in 1977. I was too old by that time to have any interest in punk; I thought it was boring since I had young teenagers with whom I had to deal with, like middle-aged men preying on them (believe me, I heard those stories more than once). Both of them tended to look younger than they were and slight in build. There actually was a shoe repair shop owner a few blocks from us who liked to give “head” to very young teen boys “with their permission” (as he said) for which he’d “gift” them with a pair of boots, which most of those kids, who were fairly poor, couldn’t afford. He was arrested for soliciting sex from underaged boys when the cops had enough evidence. Several blocks along that same road got a reputation as “chicken hawk row”. There was no “consensual sex” involved—all of the victims were underaged (12-16) and this creep took advantage of them. It’s called Hebephilia and there’s been a lot of concern over whether it’s a mental disorder or a “genuine” sexual preference, although not as much, it seems, as over their pubescent victims.

It’s both, honestly.

Some people are wired a little weirdly and have a preference for kids. Only disordered people take that and say, “Well, since I like it, it’s alright to touch kids”. Because normal people do not believe that touching kids is alright, mostly on account of the fact that they’re not sociopaths and they understands that kids aren’t ready for that and cannot consent.

I remember the first time I saw a European commercial for soap or shampoo or something on TV. I was in high school, sitting with my host family, and my jaw dropped (I suppose) when the woman in the commercial showed her boobs on TV … and no one else in the room paid the slightest attention to it, because people are usually naked when they shower. American TV commercials were never that frank.

Euro TV shows also freely admit that couples, having had sex, generally remain unclothed for the rest of the night. American (broadcast) TV couples apparently put their underwear back on, if in fact it ever came off.

Libyan lawmakers to meet in secret amid standoff

Libya’s Islamist-led parliament is pushing ahead with holding a vote of confidence Tuesday to approve a disputed new prime minister in a session held in undisclosed location Tuesday, defying demands by a renegade general that the legislature disband.
The vote could escalate one of Libya’s worst crises since the ouster and death of dictator Moammar Gadhafi in 2011. Powerful militias allied to the general, Khalifa Hifter, stormed parliament earlier this week and unilaterally declared it suspended, part of a campaign that Hifter says is aimed at breaking the power of Islamic extremists in the country.
….
In Benghazi, the al-Qaida-inspired militant group Ansar al-Shariah vowed in a statement to battle Hifter’s forces, denouncing them as “advocates of sedition and corruption that we must confront and expel” because they are waging war against Islamic law.

“The choice of confrontation has become inevitable,” it said.

Maybe it’s just me, but if I owned a restaurant, the only open-carry patrons I’d want would be cops. Everyone else could just leave their weapons at home, or go eat somewhere else. There is no need in a civilized society for civilians to carry firearms while doing their everyday business.

A couple of years ago, on another political forum I used to participate in, someone started a thread asking the question, “If you walked into a bar, would you prefer to carry your gun openly or concealed?”

My reply? “I’m so glad I live in a place where walking into a bar doesn’t result in an automatic dick swinging contest.”

Do some reading on their manager Peter Grant and how he handled record companies. He brought them down to his level and told them what they were going to do for Zepplin. Not the other way around. Zepplin made the money, record companies were just glad to have a taste. And then Zepplin made their own label.

BREAKING: Dinesh D’Souza Pleads Guilty to Violating Campaign Finance Law

Author and conservative filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza plead guilty this morning to one count on federal charges detailed in an indictment accusing him of violating campaign finance laws and making false statements. D’Souza admitted in front of the U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, that he did in fact ask two people to make contributions in their name and later reimbursed them, knowing it was not proper under the law. D’Souza submitted a plea deal on May 19. Judge Richard Berman accepted his guilty plea today and set a sentencing date for September 23, 2014. The government argued attorneys would be able to prove beyond a reasonable doubt the defendant, D’Souza, is guilty. There will be no trial by jury in this case.

“Guilty your honor,” D’Souza said, adding that he deeply regrets his actions.

“The plea is now accepted and Mr. D’Souza is now guilty under the indictment,” Berman replied.

By entering a guilty plea, D’Souza waived his right to appeal and his right to sentence modification or reduction. He faces a maximum of two years in prison, three years supervised release and a $250,000 fine. There is no parole in the federal system. His right to vote, right to hold public office, right to possess a firearm and right to sit on a jury have been revoked.

HE is what is wrong with America. He can go ahead and admit that too. He and others like him.

But that would require self-examination and a certain amount of humility, traits which he and others like him lack. They seem only to find humility on a case-by-case basis, and then only when caught with their pants down. Once the transgression is forgotten, they’re back to the same old “I’m right, because God and country” shit.

The plea deal probably came after his motion was denied last week to get the charges dropped. His lawyer probably began working up a plea deal minutes after the motion was denied in order to avoid an even longer sentence that was possible (5 years on the false statements charge).

It saves the prosecutors time and effort of trying to prove this in court, and D’Souza gets certainty of not facing the max sentence.

Well, well. Found another indication that most gun owners have far more sense than some of them would make you think, like that stupid looking couple at the restaurant. An unscientific poll taken at a pro gun/pro guns for self defense advocacy site (gunssavelines dot net) If the idiots were not so loud and deliberately baiting the pro gun control advocates, creating an impression they are far more numerous than they really are I’d not bother to post this.

Now ordinarily I would not count on anything from an advocacy site like that but it’s a poll they did about long gun open carry. To their credit when they run self defense stories they include local MSM links.

In the last 24 hours many Second Amendment writers, advocates, and legal minds have voiced their concern that openly carried rifles in private businesses are not the way to advance gun rights, and only result in more businesses taking a stand on the gun issue.

What do you think? Let us know in the poll below. Note, results are not scientific and may not update in real time.

82.78% including my vote that this hurts the gun rights effort. 12.91% Think it helps and the rest unsure. I will speculate that the nature of the site would have a “helps” bias but no way to back that up really. I chose not to link to avoid appearing to endorse or suggest the site per se.

Good grief… another racist politician exposed. This one doesn’t want to resign.

Nassau Dems, civic activists call on Birnbaum to resign

Civic activists joined Nassau Democrats Monday as they kept pressuring a Democratic county legislator to resign over accusations that she made racially derogatory comments.

…Birnbaum, a former Town of North Hempstead intergovernmental director, has apologized and called her comments “insensitive.” But she has refused to resign from her elected post, which pays $39,500 a year.

…Former Nassau Legis. Robert Troiano, a North Hempstead official, read an account of Birnbaum’s remarks, which he said came from a “collective recollection” of people who heard them directly. She was speaking to staff attorneys and was overheard by an aide to Legis. Siela Bynoe (D-Westbury).

“She said, ‘Why would anyone want to go there?’ Then … she added, ‘It’s a bad neighborhood,’ and ‘It’s a ghetto’ and … ‘It’s full of those black people,’ ” Troiano said Monday.

“She then … whispered, ‘Come on, who from the rest of the town is going to go there? After all, mostly black people live there,’ ” Troiano continued. “She later added, ‘All they want to do is play basketball.’ “

Asked about Troiano’s account, Birnbaum said, “Those are not my words.” She added, “I did not use ‘ghetto.’ “

Greenwald doesn’t like the fact that the CIA used the polio vaccination program as a cover to get DNA that it apparently helped use to track down OBL in Pakistan. The CIA now promises not to do that again, in the interests of public health (because the backlash has undermined the efforts to eradicate polio in Pakistan, which is one of the few places in the world where it’s still prevalent).

The polio vaccination program was vaccinating people (a truly worthy goal) - but it was also using the injectors to pick up the DNA, and that was funneled into a CIA database.

Exclusive: U.S. Can’t Track All of the American Jihadists Home From Syria

Western intelligence services have been warning that European and American jihadists have been flocking to Syria to fight. But they’ve been reluctant to say how many Americans have joined the extremist forces there—until now. The latest U.S. intelligence estimates say that more than 100 Americans have joined the jihad in Syria to fight alongside Sunni terrorists there.

Senior American intelligence officials tell The Daily Beast that they believe between six and 12 Americans who have gone to Syria to fight Assad have now returned to America. “We know where some are,” one senior U.S. intelligence official told The Daily Beast. “The concern is the scale of the problem we are dealing with.”

I guess knowing were some are is better than none.

It was not smart to use a vaccination program this way - that much is definitely true. But it would be nice if people also put the largest share of the blame for the backlash on the Taliban cavemen, who started murdering health workers in response.

It’s not a rational response to this revelation, and there’s more than a hint of condescension in the way people seem to hold the Taliban blameless for their violent behavior.

Several factors go into higher prices, including inflation, state-based increases in minimum wages, higher capital costs, higher raw materials costs (droughts reducing herd sizes and increasing prices for a pound of beef, etc.), higher executive pay, and not all can be attributed to line-worker pay.

It would take a far greater analysis than any infographic or 140 characters would allow. Alas, any kind of analysis along those lines would be TL;DR.

Taking a slight increase in burger prices is a good tradeoff for generating more economic activity by raising the minimum wage, IMO.

Have to agree. As shown, the price of burgers has gone up even without raising the minimum wage. I don’t mind paying five cents or so more so someone can make a more decent wage.

460 b_sharp  May 20, 2014 9:46:02am

The following conclusion is the problem.

“That just debunks the myth that raising the wage increases prices.”

That the prices have gone up without any minimum wage increase shows only that there are other factors that can increase the price of goods, including inflation which is part of the free market.

It doesn’t exclude minimum wage increases from being a factor in the past or in the future as the conclusion states. It does show that this specific increase was not due to a minimum wage increase, but the conclusion goes beyond the immediate case and encompasses all cases.

Hmm. Memes by nature oversimplify, a bit like big bumper stickers. Tie minimum to inflation? I think I’d agree. maybe most folks would. Impose rather than encourage the minimum wage into the living wage across the board? Much more economically debatable, controversial.

Why don’t the overall policies of the party, the things that actually affect people, matter to you on this?

If you paid attention in the past you would know I don’t vote down party lines. I look at who is running and decide who will serve best for me. I have a feeling you vote strictly for one party only.

I haven’t accused you of only voting for one party, so this is a weird bit of defensiveness. I’m asking you why it’s not important to you that one party, the GOP, pushes policies like voter suppression and anti-DREAM act stuff—leaving aside the politics, but just looking at the policies.

It’s not just “inflation”… climate change has led to smaller crops/rise in grain price (you may notice bagels and challah have gone up by more than inflation), plus ethanol is taking a larger share of the corn crop so feedlot beef is more expensive (grass-fed beef hasn’t gone up by much, but it’s already so much more expensive than grain-fed that who’d notice).

So. It’s only semi-lame, in the sense that it simplifies the complicated. CEO pay isn’t the biggest driver of rising McD’s prices.

This isn’t a response to my question, though, it’s a dodge. I”m talking about the policies that that person is going to enforce. I know you don’t mean it this way, but right now the way you’re pretzeling is making it look like you’re saying you don’t care if the person has racist policies, as long as they serve best for you. Again: I know that’s not what you mean. But you’re not engaging with the actual question I’m asking you: do you disagree that the GOP has more racist policies, more policies negatively affecting minorities—like opposing the DREAM act, like talking about repealing the 14th amendment, like opposing the VRA, et al— and if so, why?

If you were serious about being against racists you would be outraged by what Ellen Birnbaum said. Instead you appear more upset that this racist has a ‘D’ next to her name which would make you a Democrat hack.

I think what she said is shitty and I’m glad she’s being taken to task for it. It doesn’t change the much bigger issues, like the GOP’s systematic attempts to suppress the black vote.

The GOP can’t even pass an incredibly moderate, military-service-path-to-citizenship immigration bill.

Rep. Jeff Denham labeled his bill the ENLIST Act and said he would seek a vote as an amendment to the popular annual defense bill, the National Defense Authorization Act, or NDAA.

In response, Doug Heye, spokesman for House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, said: “No proposed ENLIST amendments to NDAA will be made in order.”

Heye said no stand-alone vote on the measure would be permitted, either.
When the Associated Press asked House Speaker John Boehner’s (R-Ohio) office whether the Speaker agrees with Cantor’s decision, Boehner’s spokesperson said the GOP leadership is on the same page.

And with that, a sensible bill with broad support, which would bolster the military, support immigrants, and honor American traditions, is dead - because Heritage Action and Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) deemed the proposal unacceptable.

What’s annoying is not bringing it up to a vote.

I worked for two years to get a bill passed here in New York, and it died because the GOP wouldn’t bring it to a vote. They admitted it would pass if they brought it to the floor, but they didn’t want to. What reason? None really given. Political reason: not wanting to do anything that looked like they supported labor.

Masons = elites.
Elites = Jews, secret or otherwise, or their “shabbos-goyim”.

The anti-semites’ firm conviction of Jewish superiority is one of the weirder aspects.

I know that this Jewish-Mason conspiracy thingy is old as shit, but I don’t get why it stuck or perpetuated. Was it just that Masons tended to be more cosmopolitan and actually let Jews join and stuff? Do you know much on this?

re: #530 Sergey Romanov

Today the Russian terrorist (and former drug-dealer, as well as escaped convict) Aleksandr Mozhaev aka Babay addressed Vladimir Putin and asked for help in destroying the “kike-Masons” in the West.

[Embedded content]

Ha! I’m really glad you’re here to cut through some of the BS. I just googled him and the second link in the results was an article in Time that tries to paint quite a different, more sympathetic, picture:

Exclusive: Meet the Pro-Russian Separatists of Eastern Ukraine

Perhaps aptly, Mozhaev’s nickname among them is Babay, the Russian word for bogeyman, which is exactly what the Ukrainian government has tried to make him. Over the past week, authorities in Kiev have released photographs that purport to prove that Mozhaev is an agent of the Russian military intelligence service known as GRU, and they have shared that information with senior Western diplomats and some reporters. This claim has been at the center of their narrative that Russian special forces, controlled by the Kremlin, have taken over towns in the Donbass, the industrial heartland of eastern Ukraine.

But Mozhaev, a mild-mannered fighter with a chest like a barrel, says he only wishes that were true, and so do many of the people in the separatist-controlled towns that dot this region. If Russian forces had indeed taken over eastern Ukraine, as they did in Crimea last month, the streets of the separatist stronghold of Slavyansk would probably not be nearly as lawless as they have become in recent days. […]

Mozhaev and his comrades took control of Slavyansk about a week ago. But over the past few days there has been no evident sign that they are receiving material support from Russia. Their foot soldiers have been so short on fuel that they have asked journalists to bring them gasoline in exchange for granting interviews, saying they don’t have enough fuel to go on patrols. […]

I guess it depends on what the real plans are. If it’s some sort of grift plan the phases can continue regardless of what the expressed “phases” actually accomplished since you can simply proclaim that they succeeded and things are going according to plan.

re: #542 Pie-onist Overlord

This was in the Sunday NYT.

Always Hungry? Here’s Why

FOR most of the last century, our understanding of the cause of obesity has been based on immutable physical law. Specifically, it’s the first law of thermodynamics, which dictates that energy can neither be created nor destroyed. When it comes to body weight, this means that calorie intake minus calorie expenditure equals calories stored. Surrounded by tempting foods, we overeat, consuming more calories than we can burn off, and the excess is deposited as fat. The simple solution is to exert willpower and eat less.

The problem is that this advice doesn’t work, at least not for most people over the long term. In other words, your New Year’s resolution to lose weight probably won’t last through the spring, let alone affect how you look in a swimsuit in July. More of us than ever are obese, despite an incessant focus on calorie balance by the government, nutrition organizations and the food industry.

[…]

The sad, almost tragic irony is that the co-author’s name is Dr. Ludwig.

It works great for my purposes. I replaced a Macbook Air running Win 7 with it.

I’ve got the 256gig model (8 gigs RAM). I use it mostly when travelling, although some at home too. It runs everything I have thrown at it without any problems and can handle some gaming (although not with spectacular graphics). I was using it for Android development last week.

580 Bulworth  May 20, 2014 11:23:02am

There are many barriers to impeachment. First is, you need Congress to do it, and that takes too long and would require something like a rational debate. The invertebrates who run the GOP don’t have the spine for it there are at least some marginally sane members of the GOP. Second, impeachment is merely the indictment, issued by a House majority. That’s a many month-long arduous processand we don’t have time for that—if Obama stays in office another day, he’ll set up his FEMA death camp trailer parks for reals. The actual trial is held by the Senate. Even if the GOP gains majority this November, it will be nowhere near the 67 votes to convict required by the Constitution. so no matter what, nobody will do what we want. We need immediate action now because shut up

Ohhhh…Sergey is flying above some heads today!

I’ve mentioned it around here before, but you were not around I don’t think.

A good friend (since passed) and I used to go fishing, but it really was more like an exercise in philosophy. Anyway, we were kicking around what would happen if Jesus Christ came back to earth and we decided he would be killed again, but this time with someone assassinating him when speaking to the people as he would be seen as a radical threat.

My buddy then blurted out, well then, should that happen, would a future religion break out and the people would all wear a little silver pistol as the symbol of his death. And everyone would pray to the gun and make the sign of the gun, etc.

That thought has always stuck with me. I have never been able to look at the cross the same way ever again. I admit, my buddy and I were never what one would call normal. And I am still glad of that fact!

The price of beef in general has gone up if my trip to the store this morning is any indication. The cheapest decent quality ground beef I could find at Kroger was 4.29 a lb. Obviously McD’s doesn’t use the top notch or even the medium notch beef, but still the price of beef is a bit nuts right now, even cheaper cuts are between 5.99 and 7.99 a lb. Last year at this time I could buy a decent pot roast for about 4.49 a lb, that same cut today was 7.99. So the price of any beef is going to be higher, just as an FYI. The drought in the west and Midwest where the cows are is a big reason why. There’s not enough water for large herds and they’ve been sold off before they died off. Now there’s a shortage, comparatively speaking, and the prices are up. Chicken on the other hand is still fairly reasonable.

Of course this is just North Metro Atlanta, I have no idea what it’s like anywhere else.
