Update: Wikileaks Carries Out Threat to Release Information That Could “Cause Deaths”

Weird • Views: 32,296

Remember this tweet from Wikileaks’ Julian Assange, posted in the heat of an argument with Glenn Greenwald about revealing top secret NSA information that could cause deaths?

Well, this deadline came and went more than two hours ago. It looks like Assange sorta forgot about that very public 72-hour threat.

Meanwhile, Pernicious G and the Wikileaks Man are the best of friends again.

UPDATE at 5/23/14 12:19:49 am

Apparently, Assange’s clock is just running a bit slow…

What is Assange, unless he’s a narcissist? Right-wing anarchist? Absolutist? Will he please go to Russia and act as cavalierly about the secrecy of the FSB’s info? Well, I think that would end the problem he is for us, too.

Assange still targeted by FBI

“WikiLeaks publisher Julian Assange remains the subject of an active criminal investigation by the United States Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation, newly published court documents reveal.

“Papers released in US legal proceedings have revealed that a “criminal/national security investigation” by the US Department of Justice and FBI probe of WikiLeaks is “a multi-subject investigation” that is still “active and ongoing” more than four years after the anti-secrecy website began publishing secret US diplomatic and military documents.

“Confirmation that US prosecutors have not closed the book on WikiLeaks and Mr Assange comes as a consequence of litigation by the US Electronic Privacy Information Centre to enforce a freedom of information request for documents relating to the FBI’s WikiLeaks investigation.”

Over $10M to provide a police presence outside the Ecuador embassy in London so far, and who know how much Australia has spent for consular services of one type or another on Assange, although they tend to buck requests from him.

Assange must be reveling in this knowledge of what it’s costing to keep him holed up there. It’s probably what keeps him pumped up, though.

Sadly, I can’t make it through all of the rest of the first season of the Wire as part of Amazon Prime’s free streaming, tonight. But I WILL be up at probably oh dark thirty to see what becomes of Avon Barksdale and his Baltimore crew. Funnily enough, in the episode I just watched, Omar is lying on the ground next to a car, shot in the leg, and in a long shot, you can see a fucking rat run across the street behind him. Not a squirrel, but an honest to fucking rat. And there is no way that was some trained rat that the director put out there: “O.k., now in this scene, there’s gunfire, you’re scared, and you run across the street…” That was just some random rat that lives in Baltimore and thought things got way too loud in that scene for his/her liking. Actually, of the 5 Dems on the Benghazi committee, she’s one of two* I have no reservations about at all. In fact, her military experience with helicopters makes her very well suited to the task.

*: I have no reservations about Smith because I know little about him. Schiff and Sanchez are left-liberal, but that just means I disagree with their views, not that they have character flaws.

As for Congressman Cummings, I do not fault his character at all. But I’d rather no one from Issa’s committee were on the new committee, as I think the matter needs fresh eyes. But Congressman Gowdy is not obnoxious, unlike Darryl Issa, so at the very least Cummings relationship with the committee chair should be less combative.

Holy shit I’m tired. Two job interviews this morning and a recruiting happy hour event for a company I’d kill to work for. The downside? My body hates me. I’m exhausted. I feel like dead weight. The upside? The interviews went well, but the big win for me was that happy hour event.

I ended up in a conversation with one of the managers that I’d interviewed with last November. I’ve seen her at a bunch of their company events since then because I’ve made it a point to stay on their radar and to keep going to their public mixers. We had a long talk about my previous interview and she got to know me a bit better and more about my experiences. She wants me to email her tomorrow with an updated resume and then she’ll talk to the recruiter I’ve been dealing with to set up another interview. I don’t want to get my hopes up but working for them would be awesome. :D

What’s not to like about a political party that has systematically organized most of those in the US that have irrational and/or bigoted resentments about the US as it is?

Perhaps we seek sanity from a GOP establishment that has used and abused these resentful people for decades as a source of free votes for plutocracy without any real attempt to deliver on Tea Party pet peeves?

Make the fight for Berlin take place just a bit later and you’ll get to see the Pike (IS-3). It’s liable to be the last thing some of your tankers ever see, though. It had a thunderous 122mm gun and excellent armor.

Also bad news for dismounted infantry and any tac air you might still have would be the M17. It’s a M5 halftrack mounting a Maxon turret with 4 .50 cal M2HBs. The US shipped the Soviet Union 1000 of those during WWII, and they normally formed the AAMG company in an SU-100 brigade, operating in batteries of 4.

The game being what it is it doesn’t take into account super late war units (at least not on the Allied side there is some silliness with flying wings, Mauses (Mice) and german four engined bombers. Either way I have already been seeing plenty of the M17 and while it can’t depress its guns enough (in game for balance reason/ps) to be much of a threat to infantry it does still pose and annoying shoot and scoot anti-air platform.

“My position was straightforward,” Glenn Greenwald writes. “By ordering illegal eavesdropping, the president had committed crimes and should be held accountable for them.” You break the law, you pay the price: It’s that simple.

But it’s not that simple, as Greenwald must know. There are laws against government eavesdropping on American citizens, and there are laws against leaking official government documents. You can’t just choose the laws you like and ignore the ones you don’t like. Or perhaps you can, but you can’t then claim that it’s all very straightforward.

Greenwald was the go-between for Edward Snowden and some of the newspapers that reported on Snowden’s collection of classified documents exposing huge eavesdropping by the National Security Agency, among other scandals. His story is full of journalistic derring-do, mostly set in exotic Hong Kong. It’s a great yarn, which might be more entertaining if Greenwald himself didn’t come across as so unpleasant. Maybe he’s charming and generous in real life. But in “No Place to Hide,” Greenwald seems like a self-righteous sourpuss, convinced that every issue is “straightforward,” and if you don’t agree with him, you’re part of something he calls “the authorities,” who control everything for their own nefarious but never explained purposes.

It may well make it impossible for either of Karzai’s potential successors to sign an agreement with the US allowing a residual force to stay in country. Though there’s an obvious risk of allowing Afghanistan to again become a staging ground for terrorism it would arguably be a very good thing for us to be truly out, to have a concrete end to the Afghanistan War.

Most Americans probably don’t care too deeply whether or not Afghanistan stabilizes itself without our troops providing training and a base for special operations, or if it devolves like Iraq. They’ll just be happy to have 13 years of war finally concluded and that position has much to recommend it.

Wikileaks did commit a huge dick move here, inasmuch as this news going public now may well result in riots and lots of innocent people dying. But in the long run this might be the final thing that kills an open ended agreement to keep troops on the ground indefinitely in a country that has become basically synonymous with a nebulous, sissyphean military commitment.

107 Justanotherhuman  May 23, 2014 3:30:13am

In April, Pres Obama said troops would be cut to around 10K; I suppose this could be an argument for total withdrawal very soon.

It’s a shitty move by Wikileaks, but one which doesn’t excuse Greenwald & Co, either, IMHO.

Karzai has been wanting the US out for years. Grant him his wish. His tenure is pretty much over, anyway, ended yesterday but he’s staying on until someone is elected in June.

“Hamid Karzai ‘preferred working with corrupt people, because they could be bought,’ Afghan lawmaker says.”

latimes.com

“Maybe he was justified personally” in opposing the troop agreement, said Davood Moradian, the founding director of a Kabul-based think tank, the Afghan Institute for Strategic Studies. “But as a president he had to show leadership by containing his personal grievances against the United States from Afghan national interests. And he failed on that account.”

“Friends say Karzai believes that in a country of swirling ethnic, regional and personal rivalries, only he has Afghanistan’s best interests at heart. As a result, he failed to encourage the growth of political parties or state institutions, preferring to strike personal deals with warlords and other powerful individuals to keep a lid on the rivalries and prevent his government from collapsing.

“Many experts say Karzai saw himself as less a president than a tribal chief, like his late father, who was leader of the influential Popalzai clan of the Pashtuns. Invested with extraordinary powers under a constitution that officials in the George W. Bush administration helped write, Karzai handed out key government posts and the money that often came with them, underwritten in part by bags of cash supplied by the CIA.”

As we’ve stated consistently, Julian Assange listens no one on this sort of manner and simply does not care who gets hurt in his vendetta against the ‘Great Satan’ America.

But while this will cause the terrorists to change tactics, I doubt it will cause any large scale turmoil in Afghanistan. Karzai will whoop and holler, but he’s already on the way out, and most Afghans don’t have the same ideals about privacy found in the US. They may see us as being dictatorial for listening in, but it’s the sort of thing they expect.

Hahahaa. Last weekend I commented about a member of a forum I take part in saying this was going on. He supposedly knows some of these guys. He had posted an image of the hamster “Nibbles” and some other comments.

They were posting about drones in the sky and all kinds of crazy stuff to throw a wrench in the OAS plans. Good stuff.

By the way…good holiday weekend everyone. Let’s get this summer going!

111 otoc  May 23, 2014 4:07:57am
We know from previous reporting that the National Security Agency’s mass interception system is a key component in the United States’ drone targeting program. The US drone targeting program has killed thousands of people and hundreds of women and children in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia in violation of international law. The censorship of a victim state’s identity directly assists the killing of innocent people.

Although, for reasons of source protection we cannot disclose how, WikiLeaks has confirmed that the identity of victim state is Afghanistan. This can also be independently verified through forensic scrutiny of imperfectly applied censorship on related documents released to date and correlations with other NSA programs (see freesnowden.is).

We do not believe it is the place of media to “aid and abet” a state in escaping detection and prosecution for a serious crime against a population.

Consequently WikiLeaks cannot be complicit in the censorship of victim state X. The country in question is Afghanistan.

I try to be a forgiving person, ignoring emotion and focusing on logic when it comes to working out an opinion. But this just pushed me to a final decision on Snowden/Greenwald/Assange.

First, there is no need for Assange to snowden me as to where this information came from: Snowden.

Second, the continual whole affair from all three leaves one question in my mind, and something that hasn’t been made clear to me. All the focus seems to be on what the US and it’s allies do, in this case during matters of war. What about other major countries which could be considered not always friendly? Russia, the host of Snowden?
wikileaks.org

Or China, who we know does it’s best at spying on other countries and companies while stating it does nothing.
wikileaks.org

Unless I’m missing something, the last entries for both countries was 5-6 years ago.

So, the truth is, this isn’t about freedom of information to make a better world. It is simply about bringing the US down. Now I can’t help but feel some emotion on the subject.

Looks like Britain’s Tea Party has won a large number of council seats over there, if not the majority on the councils, shutting out Conservatives and Liberal Democrats in this election, although Labour pulled in more votes.

bbc.com

The main gripe of UKIP appears to be immigration, esp recent waves of Eastern Europeans who are said to be the preferred hires.

“With 76 councils declared, Labour has gained 132 seats, UKIP has gained 91 seats, the Lib Dems have lost 116 and the Conservatives have lost 118.

(snip)

“Some Conservative backbenchers have called for an electoral pact with UKIP going into the general election, with Jacob-Rees-Mogg warning UKIP could split the “small c conservative vote” and let Labour in.

“Conservative Party chairman Grant Shapps rejected a formal deal between the two parties, saying there was “no question of a pact per se.” More

I figured UKIP would do well, and yes, their main gripe is largely Eastern European immigration, though they do seem to have a nativist streak as well. From what I can gather, overall they’re not as loony as, say, the BNP, but some of their candidates have expressed some pretty damned disturbing sentiments.

On the bright side, it looks like from exit polls that Geert Wilders’ party took a drubbing in The Netherlands, finishing up in fourth place in the exit polls. So that’s at least some small bit of good news. Jobbik, a really out-there, extreme-right party from Hungary, is expected to do well, as is FN of France. I don’t know how well Greece’s Golden Dawn will do.

re: #113 Dr Lizardo

It’s a disturbing trend, this reactionary kind of backlash, but shouldn’t be entirely surprising to practical-minded politicians. Culturally, immigration of any kind is seen as threatening by the most financially threatened class and that sentiment is always exploited by cynical politicians rather than helping to provide a solution.

The “internationalist” line of thought these days is from corporations—not working people. Corporations are moving country to country, seeking the cheapest labor and importing cheaper labor where they are unable to or unwilling to move their facilities out of a country (even while they offshore their profits). Business professionals, execs and mgmt types think nothing of following their companies to foreign countries, either, leaving behind work forces that cannot, and having to deal with unemployment, retraining, and in the case of some, permanent negative conditions caused by job loss.

I’m not surprised by any of it. I despise racism, and ethnic hatred, but I also can see the other side of it because I see people suffering as a result of decisions made purely on reasons of business and profits. And the rightwing has done a bang up job of convincing too many workers that it’s not a flaw of capitalism, but a personal failing on their part.

And from Mississippi (where else?):

Crooks targeting Mississippi Wildlife Officers’ vehicles for guns (VIDEO)

The latest burglary occurred during daylight hours on May 15 when a MDWFP conservation officer assigned to the state’s special response team went to Academy Sports in Jackson. When the officer came back to his vehicle, the driver’s side window was smashed and the state-issued AR-15 .223 caliber rifle was missing, pried from its vehicle lock.

This comes just two weeks after thieves struck MDWFP officers’ vehicles parked at an archery competition at the Cabot Lodge near Millsaps College, six miles from the scene of the most recent burglary. In that incident, another AR-15 and a handgun were stolen from locked units.

In January, a select-fire capable HK MP5 was stolen from a Jackson Police Department SWAT member’s car parked at his home which, like the MDWFP guns, has not been recovered.

The tactic of breaking into vehicles believed to have firearms is not unique to the Magnolia State.

Just this week, gun show attendees in Florida came out to find their car windows smashed and guns missing. In a similar incident in North Carolina, police recently arrested a group of suspects who officers say broke into cars specifically looking for firearms. Officers say that the subjects looked for various gun-related decals and bumper stickers on the vehicles to pick their targets.

Somebody found a very obscure recording, made 100 years ago, that put a bunch of shit racist lyrics to that old tune.

When I was a kid, we sang these lyrics:

I went to Cincinnati and I walked around the block
And I walked right in to a bakery shop
I took two doughnuts out of the grease
And I handed the baker a five-cent piece.

She looked at the nickel and she looked at me
She said, this isn’t any good, you see
There’s a hole in the middle and it runs right through
And I said, there’s a hole in the doughnut too!

The problem is that the tune - an old and familiar one - was used as the backing to many black face minstrel songs as well as the specific one that was talked about in the article. It’s not saying one should never sing “Turkey in the Straw” for example, but you should also be very aware of how much that tune has been used to create a hateful atmosphere over the course of American history. It ties into the greater debate about things like sport team names and the refusal of the Washington Redskins to accept the reality that his team’s name is as racist as it gets. Just imagine if there were a team called the New York (Jewish slur) or Boston (drunken Irish Slur)?

I’m not sure what I expected. It’s pretty obvious by now that conservatives like West only care about vets when they agree that the President is a “criminal.” That the woman is still serving in the Army Reserve despite losing both her legs in combat, while West got drummed out to avoid prosecution for war crimes, just requires a whole new level of chutzpah on his part.

re: #162 Pie-onist Overlord

I see Conor Friederpsdork has found his niche in the dudebro camp.

And, fwiw, no, the press is not better than the government at deciding what should remain secret, because the single overarching goal of the press in the modern era is the pursuit of eyeballs to sell to advertisers. There is no larger, overarching viewpoint of how actions beget reactions, how diplomacy works, how countries spy on each other and why, or why certain details shouldn’t be aired in broadsheet form for the public (and the enemy) to see.

Also, I read part of CF’s article (admittedly, he’s tl;dr 24/7, so I skimmed the last half), but he’s arguing against straw men, and using a select few high-profile cases to suggest that the press has a good batting average. He has no idea how many secrets the state holds, so he can’t really make that case based on limited evidence.

How PETA plans to celebrate Memorial Day…

PETA’s “Scent of Death” App Brings Smell of Slaughter to DTLA Ralph’s

Downtown hipsters beware. If you’re heading to Ralphs today for your weekly fix of PBR and pickles, you might get hit with the “scent of death” on your way out.

A 15-year-old named Joseph Arambula will demonstrating a new PETA app that the animal rights organization says will enable users to recreate the scent of decaying flesh found on corporate farms and slaughterhouses.

It’s being revealed ahead of Memorial Day weekend and barbecue season. The app includes …

… a dongle that can be plugged into an iPhone or iPad, PETA’s Liam Cronin told us. It contains a cartridge worth 100 sprays, he said, explaining this is how it works:

A shopper can scan the barcodes of hundreds of refrigerated and frozen chicken products at their local market and the app, if it recognizes the code, will squeeze off a nice spritz of dead-animal smell.

The program is in beta mode and PETA’s folks are still testing it, Cronin said. So today’s event is just a demo to raise awareness about meat.

Mmmm. Isalys. Good times. We had several in my home town here in Ohio. They also had a great little lunch counter that made the best hot chicken sandwiches. And they had the greatest orange sherbet. It had a nice acidic bite to it. And yes, Klondike bars. There was one about half way on my walk to school. My cousins and I would stop in almost daily for a ice cream cone, or a sherbet cone.

Yeah, that tweet makes me want to puke considering that two PETA employees got away with dumping the corpses of numerous animals, including a dog and her new little of puppies, into dumpsters down in NC. Two charges for possession of the drugs they were using to euthanize, numerous counts of animal cruelty, and all of that got swept under the rug in favor of “illegal dumping” that resulted in fines. Why did PETA show such mercy? Because one of those arrested is best buds with PETA’s director, who threw the might of her organization’s legal department behind making the charges disappear.

Ellsberg is way past his sell-by date, even though I think he exposed the corruption of the Pentagon regarding Vietnam at the right time and was almost ruined for doing so. Ellsberg was a highly educated 40 yr old veteran at the time and served 2 yrs in Vietnam in a civilian capacity w/the State Dept. With a top secret security clearance and working at the Rand Corp, he had help in obtaining the documents that later were published as “The Pentagon Papers”. It was an act Ellsberg engaged in after listening to a war resister willing to go to jail for avoiding the draft—it was not the same opportunistic act such as Snowden’s, even though their politics might merge on some level.

Snowden couldn’t shine his shoes, and it’s too bad Ellsberg hastily and continually endorses what Snowden did.

Not to mention that when a robot breaks down, you can’t just threaten to fire it unless it gets back to work. I wonder how many of these witless wonders who think that you can just replace minimum wage workers with machines are themselves bitter because they were replaced on the assembly line by a machine?

The beauty of the current system is minimum wage workers below the poverty threshold get subsidized help, both in healthcare and assorted other items. The infrastructure behind robotics doesn’t get the same government help. In the end, with all private costs tallied, the robot loses.

Personally, I don’t think those using the snotty “replace you with a robot” meme ever worked an assembly line. I fear it is just that typical smokescreen against people who make a living by those whom are either part of the top percents or those brainwashed to speak their bidding without thought.

Dude is a loon. I don’t care how good a doctor he is/was. He is bad for this country with his backassward thinking politically.

Dr. Carson is a columnist for the far right Washington Times, a publication so bad most conservatives don’t even take it seriously. He is not to be taken seriously either. He’s actually less qualified to run for president than Herman Cain, who not only ran America’s 7th largest(!) pizza chain but was also head of the KC Fed.

Some stores here, such as IKEA and Baumax (a hardware store) have those automated self-checkout lanes. Czechs aren’t too thrilled with them, to be honest - they’re rarely used.

Tesco did have them one of their hypermarkets here - and they pulled them out once folks figured out how they get away with, for instance, buying one kilo of tomatoes for the price of one kilo of potatoes - a 70% difference in price. The machines only go by weight and the UPC sticker you’ve put on the plastic bag…..so people would weigh up their tomatoes, and then put a potato price sticker on it.

Sneaky.

We have automated checkout lanes in a lot of businesses here in the States, like Wal-Mart or Kroger. But they’ve proven more of a bottleneck than human workers have. Nothing quite like having a machine bark at you to put the item you scanned two seconds ago in the bagging area. Or having to wait on a human to come check your ID when buying cigarettes or alcohol. Really, in the grand scheme of things, they’re little more than glorified express checkout lanes.

Yep, they will have to pay for the machine and a backup plan if the machine breaks down (like the cashiers that watch the self serve grocery checkouts), like have a second machine sitting there to take its place in case of failure (and a person that knows how to set it up when the time comes it is needed). So even at that you will be paying for at least one backup machine and a maintenance contract for that machine to sit idle, and probably someone knowledgeable enough to prep it into action when needed close at hand (who will probably want paid to be available). Then heaven forbid you change something on the menu and need to replace the whole machine (and backup) to account for that.

Polonian

PRONUNCIATION:
(po-LO-nee-uhn)

MEANING:
adjective:
1. Abounding in aphoristic expressions.
2. A native or inhabitant of Poland.

ETYMOLOGY:
For 1: After Polonius, a courtier and the father of Ophelia in Shakespeare’s play Hamlet, known for his moralistic aphorisms. Earliest documented use: 1847.
For 2: From Latin Polonia (Poland). Earliest documented use: 1533.

NOTES:
Some of Shakespeare’s best-known quotations come out of Polonius’s mouth. As his son Laertes heads for France, Polonius advises:

“Neither a borrower nor a lender be,
For loan oft loses both itself and friend.”

“This above all: to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man.”

At another time, he says: “Brevity is the soul of wit.”
As happens with quotations, some of his words have become simplified and sharpened with time, such as from the original “For the apparel oft proclaims the man.” to “Clothes make the man.”

USAGE:
“A few Polonian precepts can do something to indicate whether or not a scientist is cut out for collaboration.”
P.B. Medawar; Advice To A Young Scientist; Harper and Row; 1980.

“Derek Mahon’s admonitory phrases often sounds Polonian rather than Apollonian: ‘Everything thrives on contrariety’, ‘Equip yourself in every way you can / to take it like a woman or a man.’”
Hugh Haughton; The Poetry of Derek Mahon; Oxford University Press; 2007.

The Wegmans I frequent have scales that will weigh print out scannable price stickers in multiple places in their fresh produce area. I bag and tag my stuff well before I get near the checkout. And they are good about posting the item codes with the produce, as well as providing lookup capability in the scale software as well.

Some guys started carrying around copies of the relevant statute and showing it to the station attendants so that they could pump their own diesel. It helps that there’s a valid concern - putting diesel in a gasoline car will make it run crappy and probably stall out, but do no damage; putting gas in a diesel car will wreck the fuel pump, and that’s a several-thousand-dollar repair.

Most stores, if you’re elderly or disabled, will assist you with loading. At 73, I’m still loading my own, though (I need the exercise).

Out of necessity, I frequent the same store (they know me well—12 yrs ago I worked there, too, in the deli when I first moved here) and usually wind up buying the sale items and getting coupons from the kiosk for things I use frequently (one advantage of them tracking your purchases). And I buy a lot of store brands, because this chain has some excellent items, although I will stoop to name brands sometimes if the price if right—for instance, the 2-fers they have, in which case if I just get one, it’s half price. I’ll visit the farmers market nearby, too, at the local elementary school, but my experience is that it tends to be sometimes overpriced with not much variety, in which case, I’ll visit the little produce store nearby or stop at a roadside stand for tomatoes, squash, etc, what’s in season. I just wish chicken was not so expensive (and there are plenty of chicken producers in NC).

I can squeeze a penny until Lincoln squeals. : )

The cheapest I remember paying for gas in the ’60s was 25 cents/gal.

Nope, and they get really pissed if you try. I gave up years ago. If the attendant is busy or just slow you have to wait. I’ve always wondered if there’s some sort of penalty or jail time for an act of civil disobedience by pumping your own gas.

297 FemNaziBitch  May 23, 2014 8:18:48am

Pam Anderson is brave:

Someone like Anderson, who is both an out sexual abuse survivor and unapologetically sexual, can help people understand that those things do not conflict. You can enjoy your sexuality and share it with others—on your own terms—while objecting to people who force sex on you against your will. It has been heartening see the incredibly supportive response by most of the media to Anderson’s announcement, with very little slut-shaming or insinuations that she somehow asked for it. Perhaps people are finally beginning to learn that just because someone is a proudly sexual woman, she isn’t any less deserving of a life free from violence.

He starts out by raking Kinsley over the coals for approval of what Bush used—the signing statement—which is actually Constitutional, and which Pres Obama, and every other President, has used on occasion.

Price would be in the low 30 cents in the morning and drop to mid 20 cents by end of day.

Fun fact for the day: Kokomo, IN, has been determined to be the most volatile gasoline market in the country. Prices change multiple times a day, every day, and the prices are different in different areas of the city. It’s so bad that it’s basically required to have a smartphone and a gas price tracking app if you intend to do anything more than helplessly ride the tidal wave of price fuckery.

Yup, I’m in for this one. Might be a dud, might get really lucky and have a meteor storm. If it’s not bright where you live you might get a good show.

Timing is Great for North America

Camelopardalid meteor prediction for San Francisco
This plot shows that, from the suburbs of San Francisco, a skywatcher out just after midnight on May 24th might see more than 100 meteors in an hour from new Camelopardalid shower. You can use the same “Fluximator” to estimate how many meteors you’ll see from various cities (and using different predictions).
Peter Jenniskens / SETI Institute
Storm or no storm, they agree that the peak will likely occur between about 6:30 and 7:30 Universal Time on the 24th. This timing favors North Americans, though it means you’ll have to be out around 3 a.m. on the East Coast and just after midnight on the West Coast. The outburst will be brief, lasting just a few hours, though a somewhat longer duration is possible. Moonlight from a slender waning crescent won’t be a problem.

The vox article is about monetary reparations. The NTC article was just a catalog of racial injustice with a click bait headline about reparations to generate pundit buzz. I strongly suspect it was originally written as part of a book or some research project and he just pasted an outrageous headline on it and posted it as an article. Look at the end of his article. There’s no wrap up or conclusion, it just stops. As something to generate buzz it worked but as an article it kind of sucked.

It doesn’t “just stop.” It ends with with a specific big-dollar example, court-certified, that the race-specific robbery he’s complaining about isn’t ancient history, it’s still going on today. This very minute.

See above. If you don’t make payments, the interest still adds up since it’s based on the principal amount you owe. Don’t pay for years? Expect heartburn when you see your loan double.

People can be proactive on these loans, though; there are hardship situations, loan forgiveness if you’re willing to “work it off” in some cases, but not paying one red dime in years means everything adds up to butt hurt later.

I think there should be free universal higher education for those who are willing to study and complete courses with passing grades as required, obtaining a degree in the field they choose.

If you’re just fucking around in school on those loans, stop attending and pay them off.

[Edit: Re-worded slightly. I initially thought this article was new, but it’s actually from December.]

When the Guardian’s Alan Rusbridger testified before Parliament last December he actually publicly gave a concrete number for how many British classified documents were leaked by Snowden:

bbc.com

“We have published I think 26 documents so far out of the 58,000 we’ve seen,” he said.

This perfectly aligns with what’s been previously reported about the stolen British subset of Snowden document trove:

bbc.co.uk

Today we have learnt a little more about the electronic files seized from David Miranda - but a lot more about why the UK authorities are so concerned about it.

There are 58,000 documents, many marked “Secret” and “Top Secret”.

independent.co.uk

Information about the project was contained in 50,000 GCHQ documents that Mr Snowden downloaded during 2012. Many of them came from an internal Wikipedia-style information site called GC-Wiki. Unlike the public Wikipedia, GCHQ’s wiki was generally classified Top Secret or above.

According to Greenwald the 58K British files were just a “small subset” of the the overall leak:

buzzfeed.com

Only Laura and I have access to the full set of documents which Snowden provided to journalists.

As the Guardian reported, the New York Times and ProPublica have only the portion of the archive relating to GCHQ. That is a small subset of the documents.

[The Washington Post’s] Bart Gellman also has only a small subset of the documents, though the number is substantial and relate to NSA.

Feds won’t allow water for pot growers

WASHINGTON — Delivering a major blow to state-licensed pot growers in Washington state and Colorado, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation said today it will not allow any federally-controlled water to be used on marijuana crops.

“As a federal agency, Reclamation is obligated to adhere to federal law in the conduct of its responsibilities to the American people,” said Dan DuBray, the agency’s chief of public affairs.

The decision could hit particularly hard in Washington state, with the federal agency controlling the water supply for two-thirds of Washington state’s irrigated land.

Growers in Colorado will be less affected because the state allows only indoor pot farms.

The ruling makes clear that the Obama administration is willing to set limits on the states’ legalization experiments, even though the Justice Department said in August that it would not block their plans to tax and sell the drug.

Conservative Midland woman funds “Abortion Barbie” posters in Hollywood

SAN ANTONIO — A poster depicting Democratic gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis as “Abortion Barbie” was unveiled in Los Angeles on Thursday in advance of her Hollywood fundraiser and bankrolled by a conservative Midland woman.
Kathryn Stuard told the San Antonio Express-News she donated an undisclosed amount to conservative street artist “Sabo” to create the posters, which portray Davis’ face over a semi-naked Barbie doll with an exposed fetus in the womb.

Mattel will not be pleased.

My problem with self check out is if you’re buying things without bar codes (fresh produce) then it’s a huge pain in the ass looking up each item and clicking through all the screens.

My problem with self check-out is that I want a salary and benefits if I’m supposed to work for the fukn’ store. Hire a damn human.

Not that I have any experience with these things (go ahead, get out the shovels….) — but those look like some half-assed plants. Three leaves? They give weedgrowers a bad name, I tell ya! Nobody takes pride in their work these days! (Must be the meth….)
