Maya Angelou Passes Away, Right Wingers Spew Hatred and Racism

Wingnuts • Views: 51,396

Beloved American poet Maya Angelou passed away today at age 86.

Maya Angelou, the memoirist and poet whose landmark book of 1969, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” — which describes in lyrical, unsparing prose her childhood in the Jim Crow South — was among the first autobiographies by a 20th-century black woman to reach a wide general readership, died on Wednesday in her home. She was 86 and lived in Winston-Salem, N.C.

And of course, right on cue, wingnuts on Twitter erupted with their trademark racist rage.

TOO SICKENING TO EMBED. (This may be a “parody” account in which case it’s a complete FAIL—this type of “parody” is just an excuse to post racist shit)

Let us, for a moment, suspend reality and say she’s right and Ms. Angelou was talentless. Why would you need to take to the airwaves (metaphorically speaking) to carry on about it?
The only danger would come from someone with talent that you are trying desperately to denigrate.

Really, whenever a person of color talks about racism and it having an impact on their life. Almost like Pavlov’s dogs, wingnuts are on the case to cry about how that person should shut up or how the real racists were liberals. I mentioned Hank Aaron above. He recently talked about how racism did effect him and how he saw some of the same racism in regards to how President Obama is treated by some. So what do the usual suspects on the right do? Attack Hank Aaron as a bigot. Tell him that he should know that the real bigots were Democrats and liberals as if Mr. Aaron is too stupid to know that the forces that fought to keep racism alive were not liberals at all but proud and staunch conservatives who saw themselves as defending “traditional Southern values.” These people claim to be color blind but they’re blinded by hatred above all else. Hatred for anyone who dares to speak out about experiences at the hands of right wingers being primitive dickbags.

Why does Debbie capitalize w in “white”?

But she inherits her White father’s estate and finds White suitors when she is of marriageable age (while her White cousin cannot find suitors because she is penniless, and men of higher rank in society are looking for money and land in a marriage, according to this movie). But Belle does not really want to be with the racist White suitor she agrees to marry.

“If growing up is painful for the Southern Black girl, being aware of her displacement is the rust on the razor that threatens the throat,” she wrote in “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings,” making clear the lethality of a constant litany of slights and insults.

That autobiography, a revelation when it was published in 1969 for its frank treatment of sexual violence, economic discrimination, racism and the inadequacies of the justice system, now feels a bit like “Casablanca.” If you read the former or watch the latter after first being exposed to their many imitators, it is easy for both to seem like cliches. But while “Casablanca” entered the flow of the culture, “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings” changed the course of that river, letting new tributaries feed into it, providing new jetties from which readers who did not see themselves in much literature could set sail in its waters.[Emphasis added.]

People love her for the same reason other people hate her.

Much baking to do today. Gluten free cookies, gluten free bread, gluten free chocolate shortcake to go under some really, really good strawberries. (The hubby is gluten-intolerant.)

I’ve got the gluten free baking down pretty well now, though let’s face it, people bake with wheat flour for a reason. It works better.

I really need to help the aforementioned husband work on his g-f skills. He is a good baker, but since he can’t use wheat flour any more, and as he hasn’t had a chance to work on his g-f skills, he hasn’t done much the last 2 or 3 years. If I get hit by a truck or something he’ll be in trouble, and we wouldn’t want that.

President and Mrs. Bush Attend Ford’s Theatre Gala
The National Theatre
Washington, D.C.
2008

MRS. BUSH: Welcome, everyone, to the Ford’s Theatre Gala, and thank each and every one of you for your generous friendship to Ford’s Theatre.

Tonight, we present the Lincoln Medal, an annual award given by Ford’s Theatre. The Lincoln Medal brings Abraham Lincoln’s legacy to life by recognizing his wisdom and vision in the work of today’s leaders. It honors those who, through their accomplishments or personal attributes, illuminate the character of our most beloved President.

Earlier this year, at a Lincoln birthday celebration at the White House, we honored two Lincoln Medal recipients: Sandra Day O’Connor and Benjamin Carson. A former Supreme Court Justice and a renowned pediatric surgeon, these honorees have upheld Lincoln’s ideals of equality and service.

Tonight, we reflect on Lincoln’s love of the arts by recognizing two magnificent artists: the poet Maya Angelou and the actress Ruby Dee…

I always did enjoy reading about the Harlem Renaissance in school. I always being on the spectrum could relate a little to Dunbar’s We Wear the Mask.
WE wear the mask that grins and lies,
It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes,—
This debt we pay to human guile;
With torn and bleeding hearts we smile,
And mouth with myriad subtleties.

Why should the world be over-wise,
In counting all our tears and sighs?
Nay, let them only see us, while
We wear the mask.

We smile, but, O great Christ, our cries
To thee from tortured souls arise.
We sing, but oh the clay is vile
Beneath our feet, and long the mile;
But let the world dream otherwise,
We wear the mask!

146 Lidane  May 28, 2014 11:41:07am

And when great souls die,
after a period peace blooms,
slowly and always
irregularly. Spaces fill
with a kind of
soothing electric vibration.
Our senses, restored, never
to be the same, whisper to us.
They existed. They existed.
We can be. Be and be
better. For they existed.

—Maya Angelou, “When Great Trees Fall”

147 HappyWarrior  May 28, 2014 11:43:21am

I think AA literature by writers like Angelou, Wright, Dunbar, and Ralph Ellison and James Baldwin to name a couple of others make the TCOT types uncomfortable since they write and wrote about subjects that make them feel uncomfortable. The one common thread I’ve observed among conservatives even the less batshit insane ones is they have a tough time relating or wanting to relate to people who have vastly differing experiences tahn they do. So a book dealing with the experiences of Jim Crow as a black woman will at the very least perplex them or in some cases even anger them.

re: #192 Justanotherhuman

Well, I suppose this could be interpreted in different ways:

“So, maybe someone should remind Obama that maybe he shouldn’t do any selfies at Maya Angelou’s funeral”

I saw it as an implication that he was at her funeral when this was done. Others might have seen it as a “reminder” not to do it at her funeral.

It would be “shouldn’t have done” then, and the use of “remind” in such a context would be out of place, IMHO.

At any rate, it was just another RWNJ vile jab.

On that we agree ;)

i’ve certainly heard him called a ‘closet liberal’ by our friends in freeponia

They turned on Bush as soon as they realized it was convenient to do so. Until then he could do no wrong. Hell in that sense, I do have some empathy for Bush since he wasn’t a bigot like these clowns are. How sad is it that George W. Bush is a sane face of conservatism.

Statement from Dr. Maya Angelou’s Family:
Dr. Maya Angelou passed quietly in her home before 8:00 a.m. EST. Her family is extremely grateful that her ascension was not belabored by a loss of acuity or comprehension. She lived a life as a teacher, activist, artist and human being. She was a warrior for equality, tolerance and peace. The family is extremely appreciative of the time we had with her and we know that she is looking down upon us with love.

Or is the hate a reaction to fear of lost privilege and control that’s relatively new?

Whatever.

I’d just show him this:

Former military service members using Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals are just as happy with their care as patients using private medical clinics, according to a leading customer-satisfaction survey.

The American Customer Satisfaction Index for 2013 shows that the VA health network, which serves more than 8 million veterans, achieved marks equal to or better than those in the private sector.

The entire VA scandal is predicated on a lie, that they perform worse than private hospitals and should be privatized.

I think in a way that the sharing has made it worse. It’s allowed people who might have shared these thoughts with a close friend, in private, to have their hatred and bigotry publicly validated. Worse than that, it’s as if they see it as a competition to see who can say the most vile, hateful thing and get virtual backslapping from their fellows.

Yes, and if you give them all vouchers and overload the private system just when the ACA means more people have insurance, maybe you can “prove” that broadening access to healthcare is a really bad idea and we should just go back to the way things were.

I don’t know. Cynic in me says it’s always been like this. Only more people have a platform for their hate. But another part of me does think that the reaction to fear of lost privilege and control is definitely there too i.e. Rodger resenting the fact that blonde white women were going out with non-whites rather than himself.

Yeah - that interesting approach I’ve seen to criticizing the ACA by saying that because so many more people now have access, it’s harder to find doctors and all that. with the concomitant belief that the solution is to deny those people access. IOW, that America, the richest country in the world, cannot afford to provide healthcare to its citizens, unlike a lot of other, less rich nations.

By and large Veterans like the care they get in the VA system, as much or more than patients at private hospitals. Be nice if self aggrandizing douches like Montel and everyone pushing the idea of a scandal heard that. People die wating for care at private hospitals too.

Man found dead in NYC hospital waiting room more than 8 hours after entering

And while it’s an inexcusable tragedy, nobody treats it as an an indictment of the entire private hospital system. The conservative and media need to manufacture a scandal and run with it is beyond pathetic at this point.

re: #243 GeneJockey

When you have to go back 50 years or more to make your party the heroes, you really are scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Not even that. The Democrats did Jim Crow ignores that the Republican party and the right began to turn a blind eye to segregation when they saw that they could win the South in elections because of it. In 1964, the GOP nominated Goldwater for President who opposed the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Meanwhile the Dems nominated the guy who signed it into the law. Plus the Republicans today have a presidential front runner named Rand someone who has said on the record he would have voted against it and their model supreme court justice someone Scalia has said he would have voted against Brown. The right wants to say libs were the real racists yet their own contemporary officials who they vote for or want to be the model of a judge have problems with the legislation. It’s the ultimate having their cake and wanting it too moment.

245 HappyWarrior  May 28, 2014 1:46:34pm

And honestly Jim Crow wasn’t only Democrats. One of the ways the Republican Party began to grow in the South is when Southern white Republicans usually disenchanted Democrats who hated the national party for turning pro civil rights tried to out-dixiecrat the dixiecrats. Yes, the Dixiecrats were Democrats but it’s also true that their only nominee for president ended up having a very long career in the Senate as a Republican. And it’s also true that a Republican Majority Senate leader not a Democratic one mind you said that “We wouldn’t have had all these problems had we elected him.”

They can never answer that. They just stupidly convince themselves that segregationists were liberals even though segregation was and is the embodiment of a conservative position just as integration is the same for a liberal position. They want to wave their rebel flags yet they want to be associated with any of the negative parts of that flag. In short, they’re cowards politically speaking. They want to take credit for the actions of a Republican Party whose platform would resemble the Democrats more so than the contemporary GOP one.
