Erick Erickson Analyzes Isla Vista Shootings, Concludes Men Are the Real Victims

“War On Masculinity”
Wingnuts • Views: 38,442

Right wing bloggers seem to be in a race to the bottom to see who can say the most twisted, heartlessly insane thing about the Isla Vista mass murder, and today’s winner is the always effervescent Erick Erickson of redstate.com, who writes that Elliot Rodger’s killing spree proves men are the real victims.

In a “war on women” culture, some vocal voices have seized on this as what happens to men questing for a fully masculine culture. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth.

Best we can tell, Elliot Rodger lived the very lifestyle the cultural left thinks men should live and that is regularly glorified on the silver screen. For all the talk of a “War on Women,” there has actually been a war on masculinity for a few decades. And more and more twenty-something young men are getting lost and acting out while society tries to find something new to replace the tried and true.

Society used to expect men to open doors, protect their families, and be champions of modesty and virtue. But chivalry is dead. Instead of men and women complimenting each other, they’re supposed to be perfectly equal even if they are not. The hook up culture, instant gratification, and selfishness pervade our culture

Erickson is an idiot, but what I assume is a photoshopped picture of him holding the computer is in execrable taste and should be deleted. It is not associated with the actual article.

As for

“Society used to expect men to open doors, protect their families, and be champions of modesty and virtue. “

I believe the Taliban still does that.

Erick, Son of Erick’s not really saying anything we haven’t heard plenty from the “Men’s Rights” crowd over the years. They want to enshrine Rodger as a victim of society, but the reality is that Rodger is a victim of the sort of Cromagnon thinking that the MRA crowd sell, the idea that men are entitled to sex for being “nice guys.” If chivalry is “dead,” then assholes like Erickson killed it.

8 klys  May 28, 2014 5:17:04pm

Reposting from downstairs, because it’s important.

I don’t know if any of you have heard of Zoë Keating, but her music is pretty phenomenal. Unfortunately she and her husband found out earlier this month that he has cancer - in his brain, lungs, liver, possibly bones.

Today, she found out that insurance has declined to cover his recent hospitalization as not medically necessary.

Yeah, tell me again how great our health insurance system is, Republicans. Even the ACA is just trying to paper over the cracks. I’d love to believe that people will wise up soon and we can have single payer, so that stories like this aren’t so fucking heartbreakingly common.

In the meantime, if you like her music, considering buying an album or two.

Her albums are only $6 each and you can download from her in your choice of formats (and you can pay more if you want/can afford to). Really some beautiful music.

I feel stupider for having read this. Really, I’m getting sick and tired of people like Erickson who aren’t very old acting like they have some “wisdom” over us in Gen-Y. Erickson talks about a culture of instant gratification? Does he mean the culture that he’s part of that demands Obamacare be repealed or else the government shutdown? He’s nothing but a moralizing hypocrite.

Next Yayloo that tells you they love Ford because they didn’t take any government money let them know that their EcoBoost Enginge came from US Gvt. monies.

America’s love of the pickup truck is what makes us so excited by this week’s announcement that Ford has sold its 500,000th 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost(r)-equipped F-150 truck.

The EcoBoost achievement is the latest success story for the Department’s Loan Programs Office (LPO). In September 2009, the Department issued a $5.9 billion loan from the LPO’s Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing (ATVM) Loan Program, enabling Ford to upgrade facilities across Illinois, Kentucky, New York, Michigan, Missouri and Ohio, including the retooling of the Cleveland Engine Plant where the EcoBoost is made. All told, the ATVM loan helped to create and preserve manufacturing jobs for more than 33,000 Ford employees.

energy.gov

According to Ford’s news release, F-150 EcoBoost owners collectively have saved an estimated 56.8 million gallons of gas on an annual basis in the past 38 months. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, that’s equal to:

The annual greenhouse gas impact of 413,895 acres of U.S. forests
A city in which 70,000 homes going without electricity for a year
6,685 tanker trucks’ worth of gasoline
Installing 139 wind turbines

If I remember right, Erickson is a dad to a daughter, what kind of loving Dad could even begin to defend this horrendous crap?

With all the whining and tantruming about this murder and the motives of the killer, they keep making the point that women and men of integrity keep trying to explain: Women are hated, with a real seething horrendous hatred, and we’re reminded of it every time these people write another blog post, run their mouths on the radio or TV or put out yet another book or whatever else they manage to vomit their bile all over.

I saw that and was not impressed. If someone has a rotten childhood and it feels like the rest of the world is out to get them, the child eventually decides whether to feed the rage and alienation or tamp it down. God may or may not have anything to do with that turning point.

Erickson would sooner swallow his tongue than admit that Elliot Rodgers latched onto misogyny that has been deeply embedded in society by centuries of patriarchal religion (among many other factors), and that said misogyny is usually approved of by social conservatives as long as the body count is not so spectacular.

A seminary would teach theology; a Bible college makes you memorize the Bible.

Also, a seminary can be a secular school; a Bible college, which is generally evangelical or pentacostal, absolutely cannot be and they were formed in reaction to secular teachings.

There’s nothing wrong with “chivalry” when it’s used in the context of doing cute, sweet, romantic things like holding doors open or pulling out chairs (as long as the girl doesn’t get offended by it). Misogyny is not chivalry, it’s being a royal dick.

I suspect the rationale is that chivalry requires a pretty strict hierarchy, and generally men outranked women, children, elderly and others they were supposed to protect. If you stepped outside that societal structure you forfeited those protections, thus, women who don’t recognize the authority of men in general are no longer protected.

54 palomino  May 28, 2014 5:44:43pm

In the sick mind of this far right fuckwad, nothing’s funnier than a bloody coat hanger. Except maybe the woman who died and the ensuing grief of her family and friends.

And how does the shooter exemplify this evil Hollywood culture? Because his father worked in the film industry and he drove a BMW and lived in California? That description probably applies to a million people in this state, and as such has zero probative value. Furthermore, how does that explain the 30 other mass shootings in the last few years that took place nowhere near L.A.?

I love his “chivalry is dead” line though. That talking point is prehistoric. That’s the same line reactionaries have been using since the birth of the modern women’s movement. It goes back at least to the 50’s. Erickson’s a fossil.

Yeah, popular culture has been pushing the “bad boy” meme since I was a girl.

It’s a bit of both, actually; movies and TV push the whole idea that “women only want bad boys”, but in the end, they come to their senses and realize that the nice guy is the one they really want. So if the “nice guy” just perseveres (and maybe learns to knock the jock on his ass), eventually, he’ll get his hot chick.

Yeah, popular culture has been pushing the “bad boy” meme since I was a girl.

They go with the “girls want bad boys, but they settle for nice guys” bit. In recent years, that’s turned into the idea that nerds can score with hot chicks if they disguise themselves as assholes, but get found out in the end for the “nice guys” they really are.

Probably. I’m not up on the difference between seminaries and bible colleges.

Seminary is for people who want to be preachers. Bible college is for people who want to be christian lawyers, christian book publishers, christian musicians, christian car dealers, christian whatever else they’re going to do for a living as long as they marry christians and raise christian children and all their college pals will be christians who lived a christian lifestyle while attending school.

Probably. I’m not up on the difference between seminaries and bible colleges.

Bible Colleges only offer (usually) B.Div. (bachelor of divinity) or a similar undergraduate degree for their theologically inclined students. A B.Div. is basically useless in terms of becoming a pastor in some denominations. They want the Master of Divinity, which is where the seminaries come in. Seminaries are mainly graduate schools and offer the terminal Ph.D. or Th.D. degrees as well. Although, some seminaries have began offering bible school-esque undergrad programs as well.

Many moons ago, theological training experienced degree inflation like a lot of fields, thus you have the situation where E2 is going to seminary.

As a side note to the discussion of E^2’s new seminary education, one great thing about the NT Greek class was learning about the codices and fragments of the New Testament, and which ones were considered “more authentic” than others. There are several passages that scholars are pretty certain were added by later scribes during theological debates, to shore up their case, for instance.

So really, if Erickson isn’t going to bother going to the source documents, his Bible Masters is dubious.

Another side note, I can probably name off the Reformed Presby authors he’ll be studying.

A photo circulated on jihadist social media accounts showed a smiling young man who was said to be the bomber. He had a blond beard and was holding a cat to his chest.

Activists also circulated a video that was said to record the attack. It first showed rebels loading what appear to be tank shells into a large vehicle that had been armored with metal plates. In the video, there is a large explosion after the vehicle drives down a road.

Well, if he was in a suicide attack I don’t think he’s available for any more missions.

re: #162 Belafon

I don’t know. While those numbers suck relative to the general population, there way better than any tech company I have been at, and that includes a government contractor which is basically required to make sure they hire without any regard to age, gender, or ethnicity (as long as they are US citizens).

I think part of the problem is that so many are located in Silicon Valley.

Overall, Google’s workforce is only 2% Black, only 1% Black in its tech sector. I expect some companies are worse than that. Women’s employment looks bad in comparison to our presence in the general population, but the ratio is still much higher than that of Blacks. Asians are probably overrepresented because of location, also.

I would love to figure out how to get more women and minorities in engineering, but how and where you grow up still has a big influence on most people. When I was in community college in the early 70s, I met quite a few women who were were studying programming. All of us had to use computers as well, since some of the classes were self-paced and there seemed to be a general interest in “male” type courses. I even knew women who took auto mechanics and one who opened her own shop with a male partner servicing Volkswagens. It was a time when more women were going to college generally as part of the Second Wave of feminist activism. Unfortunately, as the movement died out, so did a lot of interest in pursuing male dominated occupations. I was more interested in the humanities and social sciences, not that it made much difference in my future job prospects. I still had to fall back on my office experience without a 4 yr degree.

I had this discussion with Mrs. Fish the other day. I mentioned that, out of all the automotive skills, the one I would teach EVERYbody (if I could) would be to change a tire. Right behind that is teaching them why it’s important to check, top off, and change oil. I wouldn’t even go so far as to say people need to know how to change it, only that it’s important to do.

John has a pretty good blog. He started out Republican, was evoving away from the party at the same time it was going nuts; the Schaivo fiasco finally drove him away, though DougJ’s (a FPer now) nagging helped a lot. Rating him based on his earlier views would be like rating Charles like they do at Daily Kos.

Most of the FPers are pro-release, but a number of them are ambivalent about Snowden the person.

John’s also had a number of FPers over the years, including Angry Black Lady. It’s where I first learned about people who seem to exist only to harass a certain person. A certain FPer would post, and suddenly this person would show up and say all sorts of shit just because they didn’t like the person posting.

re: #172 Justanotherhuman

I believe Google when they say they want to fix this. I, honestly, don’t think they can right now. Hiring minority and female engineers is wildly difficult. My company does better than most, and our numbers still look like Google’s (we are also a small start-up rather than a giant corporation like Google).

The reason Google can’t fix this is because of everything in Ta Nehisi Coates’ “The Case for Reparations”. That is why there aren’t African American engineers. This country is setup to deny them education. The STEM departments at my university, particularly the harder sciences and engineering departments were dominated by white males. The physics department at my school ousted a tenured professor for telling a female student that “girls don’t belong in physics” during office hours. That happened in the 90s. And 10 years ago, you could count the number of female physics graduates on one hand. They were all incredibly smart and talented, but that’s because they had to be twice as good as the guys.

Google can’t fix the diversity numbers in their engineering department until after we’ve fixed the diversity problems in education. And that’s going to have a huge lag, were we bothering to really work on it. Which we aren’t. Instead we’re gutting school budgets at all levels of education. (Who gets their education opportunities cut last is left as an exercise to the reader.)

They could probably do a bit better on leadership roles. But, a lot of the same arguments still apply. Also, there’s a habit of hiring the managers from the engineering pool, so you get folks who understand the job of their underlings, which biases the pool.

I get the sense that this is another instance where deep down Cole knows he’s hitched his wagon to an unstable juggernaut in Snowwald, and he’s too stubborn to admit it, so he’s lashing out at those who disagree with him. Wouldn’t be the first time.

But that’s enough armchair psychologizing from me for the night :)

That’s my take too and he will invariably have another meltdown, switch sides, alienate all of his current allies then proclaim moral and intellectual high ground………..again.

Doesn’t look that way. A sample:

In my estimation, there has not been in American history a more important leak than Edward Snowden’s release of NSA material - and that definitely includes the Pentagon Papers 40 years ago. Snowden’s whistleblowing gives us the possibility to roll back a key part of what has amounted to an “executive coup” against the US constitution.

ellsberg.net

296 ObserverArt  May 28, 2014 7:39:03pm

Am I getting Snowden’s main thrust correct? He is basically saying he had problems with the way the interpretations of the law were being used by the NSA. That was his beef with the whole program. Nothing so far about this huge sweeping machine that is reading every email, looking at every image and listening to every conversation.

Which if it is the right read, pretty much what everyone here thought from the get-go when it all broke.

You know Snowden had some reasonbale concerns about the NSA. It is the way he has gone about making sure his concerns are paramount.

He acts like he is God. He was asked by Williams what he would say to President Obama if he had a chance. He answered that he wouldn’t presume to advise the President. Really?

Yet he presumes to be the sole authority of what the world needs to know about US Intel. Disconnect.

Meh. Typical big media interview. No real meat on them bones.

I still get the feeling all Ed really took was general outlines of how the NSA programs theoretically worked. He didn’t like the theory and its implementation so he wanted to make a big deal about it.

But really, what does it all mean to Johnny Q. Public Jr. that was all freaked out by Greenwald’s reporting of the programs. Of course Williams didn’t drill in and ask anything like that. He pitched generalized stuff that Snowden could lead to wherever Snowden wanted it to go.

We interrupt your regularly scheduled blogging to bring you this very important message: The UPS guy was LATE today—he didn’t show up with my new macro lens until like 8:15pm. I was pissed because there wasn’t much light left and I didn’t feel like dragging out the speedlight, so I only got to take about half a dozen quick, mediocre snapshots before the cats got annoyed and ran off. Below is the best one.

As you can see, at f/2.8 the depth of field is razor thin—no wider than the cat’s nostril. For those of you who like to pixel peep, I’ve also included a crop of what the nose looks like at 100% magnification. As you can see, there’s a pretty significant amount of noise as the ISO was set to 3200, and it’s not perfectly focused as the cat was squirming and the camera chose a shutter speed of 1/25 second, which really wasn’t fast enough. Oh, and I was prolly a little further than the minimum focusing distance away (min. is 1 ft—I’d guesstimate I was at around 14-15 in).

Anyway, I think I’m going to have lots of fun with this lens and will probably end up boring you all to tears with macro shots—need to try getting closer with better light. Did I mention it’s heavy? Yeah, ugh, that’s the only part I don’t like. The lens alone weighs almost 1.5 lbs (21.1 oz to be exact), so when you add it to the camera body, which also has a battery grip… sore arms.

I now return you to whatever fights, discussions, complaints, trollings, etc. were in progress…

Don’t be jealous of my pretty pink nose

Who knew a cat’s nose has so much texture?
