2 Rev_Arthur_Belling  May 28, 2014 8:09:37pm

They didn’t livestream that shit on nbc.com or whatever?

Also, a comment in the previous thread reminded me, the BBC has one presenter (Jeremy Paxton?) who is notorious as a bulldog interviewer. Asks the same question of a politician 6-7 times if the pol is evasive.

If Snowderp ever does a BBC interview, I hope that guy gets the call, and asks some proper questions.

The NHL playoffs are much more exciting. Right now Chicago and LA are tied 4-4 in overtime. This is some exciting fast paced hockey at it’s best.

Same can be said of Greenwald.

For a “Master of Disguise”, Snowden seems quite resourceless. All this talking just makes him look like a script kiddie, Big Ego, little original deeds.

I have actually found that for many live events, watching a live blog among likeminded netizens is preferable to yelling at my computer screen over a live stream of the actual event. Funnier too.

Re-posted from downstairs:

Thankfully, I’ve never actually heard Edward Snowden speak. I’ve avoided all his video interviews. I take that back, I’ve heard his voice maybe a couple of times offhand on TV. I only have read him speak, mostly here at LGF. And the narcissism and naïveté is grossly evident.

Edward Snowden is a traitor and a coward and will not prove otherwise until he comes back to the United States and sees a judge.

17 calochortus  May 28, 2014 8:18:06pm

So, if Snowden releases a list of everyone the government has been spying on, will it be alphabetized so I can find my name and the names of my friends?

I will reiterate a comment I made this morning: Some enterprising journalist should create a timeline of all the various stories GG and Snowden have told about this Great Adventure and note the discrepancies. Said journalist would be a viral hit and number one on the GG shitlist.

Would. Be. Epic.

Before shutting down for the evening, I want to put my last comment from the previous thread here to go along with the discussion others will have as they get to watch the Snowden interview in their time slot. I’m interested if others saw it the same way.

Meh. Typical big media interview. No real meat on them bones.

I still get the feeling all Ed really took was general outlines of how the NSA programs theoretically worked. He didn’t like the theory and its implementation so he wanted to make a big deal about it.

But really, what does it all mean to Johnny Q. Public Jr. that was all freaked out by Greenwald’s reporting of the programs? Of course Williams didn’t drill in and ask anything like that. He pitched generalized stuff that Snowden could lead to wherever Snowden wanted it to go.

Later on everyone. Remember to turn off your phones. Ed said they can use it as a mic and take pictures with it. Boo!

Am I the only one who remembers the stories during the Olympics in Sochi about how the Russians were blatantly keeping tabs on everyone? People taking cellphones and laptops to Sochi, turning them on, and watching them get hacked in minutes? All of these stories were being told while Snowden was on his “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego” world tour!

Snowden has to be judged on ALL of his actions, not just the ones that might have actually benefitted the American people. Even if his early revelations had led to a productive dialogue about the NSA (which Greenwald’s ego couldn’t let happen) all of the revelations about foreign intelligence-gathering—especially stuff that had a direct bearing on the War on Terror—counts against him as well.

We are doomed because our people are too ignorant to survive. They actually, honestly believe that it is immoral and undemocratic for our government to have secrets and we are uniquely evil in the world in this respect.
Without wanting to give anyone ideas, there are certain types of security (ie secrecy) failures that could kill not thousands but millions of people. With a whole nihilistic industry of conspiraliars, hackers and traitors working night and day to destroy every form of secrecy, the chance of that kind of failure grows by the day. Where will these bastards and their fake morality be then?

Many years ago, I saw the film City of God, which was filmed in the favelas and used extras from the favelas as well.

It wasn’t easy for me to wrap my head around the fact that all too many people actually live like that; that is alien to my life experience, I admit. And that particular film quite nicely captured that sense of resentment in the favelas. My impression was that they’re an explosion in search of a spark.

I believe so. Good catch…

It was December 11, 2012, and in a small art space behind a furniture store in Honolulu, NSA contractor Edward Snowden was working to subvert the machinery of global surveillance.

Snowden was not yet famous. His blockbuster leaks were still six months away, but the man destined to confront world leaders on a global stage was addressing a much smaller audience that Sunday evening. He was leading a local “Crypto Party,” teaching less than two dozen Hawaii residents how to encrypt their hard drives and use the internet anonymously.

“He introduced himself as Ed,” says technologist and writer Runa Sandvik, who co-presented with Snowden at the event, and spoke about the experience for the first time with WIRED. “We talked for a bit before everything started. And I remember asking where he worked or what he did, and he didn’t really want to tell.”

Agreed. Just reading the words “film” and “City of God” put together sends a flood of imagery from that film into my mind. City of God is a giant in film, I would hope.

Matthew Green (cryptographer and research professor at the Johns Hopkins University Information Security Institute):

krebsonsecurity.com

“I think the TrueCrypt team did this,” Green said in a phone interview. “They decided to quit and this is their signature way of doing it.”

Green last year helped spearhead dual crowdfunding efforts to raise money for a full-scale, professional security audit of the software. That effort ended up pulling in more than $70,000 (after counting the numerous Bitcoin donations) — far exceeding the campaign’s goal and demonstrating strong interest and support from the user community. Earlier this year, security firm iSec Partners completed the first component of the code review: an analysis of TrueCrypt’s bootloader (PDF).

Green said he’s disappointed that the TrueCrypt team ended things as abruptly as they did, and that he hopes that a volunteer group of programmers can be brought together to continue development of the TrueCrypt code. That could be a dicey endeavor given the license that ships with TrueCrypt, which Green says leaves murky and unanswered the question of whether users have the right to modify and use the code in other projects.

“There are a lot of things they could have done to make it easier for people to take over this code, including fixing the licensing situation,” Green said. “But maybe what they did today makes that impossible. They set the whole thing on fire, and now maybe nobody is going to trust it because they’ll think there’s some big evil vulnerability in the code.”

Green acknowledged feeling conflicted about today’s turn of events, and that he initially began the project thinking TrueCrypt was “really dangerous.”

“Today’s events notwithstanding, I was starting to have warm and fuzzy feelings about the code, thinking [the developers] were just nice guys who didn’t want their names out there,” Green said. “But now this decision makes me feel like they’re kind of unreliable. Also, I’m a little worried that the fact the we were doing an audit of the crypto might have made them decide to call it quits.”

From his partial audit (this seems to relate to today’s warning message):

I don’t think I’ve ever been as uninterested or frustrated in an election campaign as I am with the current primary campaigns in Mississippi.

In the House race you have our current Representative Steven Palazzo who practically claimed to be a true blood Tea Partier to get elected in 2010 only to dash considerably to the center after he got to Washington.

His opponent is former congressman Gene Taylor who spent a number of terms in Washington as a Democrat. Taylor has now switched to the GOP to take on Palazzo in this rematch but I haven’t seen much of anything from his campaign.

Palazzo’s campaign has been running ads touting the fact that when “Obama locked the Veterans out of the War Memorial”, Steven was one of the guys who stormed the gates to let them back in. They also tout the fact that he “voted against Obamacare 100 times”.

Taylor challenged Palazzo to a debate, but never got a response.

On the senate side we have long time Senator Thad Cochran going up against Tea Party darling and current MS State Senator Chris McDaniel.

McDaniel’s campaign has been busy painting Cochran as a bleeding heart, best friend of Obama liberal commie punk. Also , McDaniel is encouraging people to send him to Washington to “stop Obamacare” (aren’t we a little late to this party?).

Cochran’s campaign has been running ads against McDaniel calling him a lazy two face people pleaser who takes whatever position suits him at the time (I wonder if he learned that from Mitt Romney) and calling reference to the person who snuck into the nursing home to take and subsequently upload video of Cochran’s ill wife.

Cochran and McDaniel have ALSO refused to debate each other.

Since the Democratic party is practically non existent down here all the media attention is on the GOP races.

But you have four people hurling mud at each other and little else. No one will man up and debate, no one bothers to campaign on a platform. It’s not “vote for me and this is what I will do”, it’s “Don’t vote for the other guy, he sucks!”

Not that this is anything new to politics but I do find it a mite depressing.

I can’t vote yet (hopefully I will be a citizen next year so I will be eligible in 2016) but even if I could I don’t think I’d cast a ballot for any one of these yahoos.

To end up stuck in a place where those rights are are being challenged in ways that I would consider deeply unfair. The recent bloggers registration law in Russia I, I can’t think I’ve any basis for a law like that. Not just in Russia but in any country. The government shouldn’t be regulating the operations of a free press, whether it’s NBC or whether it’s some blogger in their living room. There’s so much that needs to be defended here in Russia but I’m limited by my inability to speak Russian and so on and so forth that it’s, it’s an isolating and frustrating thing and I really hope that Russia, the United States and many other countries will work to push back against this constantly increasing surveillance against this constant erosion and abrasion of public rights.

I had thought that there is strong social component, the left-wing component. There’s no left-wing component there, there is a purely right-wing nationalist protest. That’s where the real fascists and nationalists, neo-Nazis are. Ours, Russian, I mean. There are activists from organizations such as the Russian National Unity, National Bolshevik Party, the Russian Liberation Movement, the Cossacks, the radical Orthodox activists. The weaknesses in TrueCrypt sound just like those another writer noted about Snowden’s other fave app, Off the Record (OTR). I paged it here littlegreenfootballs.com

One trouble with open source software is the occasional lack of follow-through. Some projects, like Linux and its many flavors, have solid support and the dedication of its author to keep it alive. Others, like TrueCrypt and OTR, apparently depend on people with short attention spans.

This is something of a trouble with any smaller software company. I have had several applications that I really liked, only to watch them shuttered when the developer got bored or got a better-paying gig. CMS plug-ins too.

re: #66 Shiplord Kirel

We are doomed because our people are too ignorant to survive. They actually, honestly believe that it is immoral and undemocratic for our government to have secrets and we are uniquely evil in the world in this respect.
Without wanting to give anyone ideas, there are certain types of security (ie secrecy) failures that could kill not thousands but millions of people. With a whole nihilistic industry of conspiraliars, hackers and traitors working night and day to destroy every form of secrecy, the chance of that kind of failure grows by the day. Where will these bastards and their fake morality be then?

You’ve come closest to the truth yet.

Snowden doesn’t know anything about the world at large, just his own which began with gaming and an online forum, and it’s his own form of dismantling the work of those who came before him, “breaking it” by hackery and theft, and using encryption for secrecy of his ill gotten gains. You will note that his only “higher” education was centered around this. As a high school dropout, he didn’t particularly care about the humanities, social sciences, or anything that he didn’t think had any bearing on his own goals.

He grew up as a child in a technological wonderland at which he spent inordinate amounts of time figuring out how to bypass codes for his own benefit in an early acceptance of cynical entitlement—that is, steal some one else’s intellectual product and modify it for your own gain. This is the early, crude form of libertarianism, a philosophy in which you never actually grow, either intellectually or emotionally, although a few can fake it to a degree.

If Snowden-like creatures really are the future, we absolutely are fucked as a species.

“Yes, boss, we’ve isolated the genes, we’re going to splice them into corn, and then our puppets in Congress will mandate that everyone consume it.”

“Excellent! Our shareholders will be delighted to see our customer base shrink from 1 billion+ to 500,000 over the next 50 years. Our earnings per share will double with a rapidly dwindling customer base. You’re owed a bonus and a promotion.”

Iran link to social media spying on military leaders

US Navy admirals, politicians, ambassadors and lobbyists, as well as senior government and military figures from the UK, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan, were all targeted, said iSight.

“If it’s been going on for so long, clearly they have had success,” said Tiffany Jones, a spokeswoman for iSight, told Reuters.

In total, said the report, fake personas for 14 people were created and maintained on a variety of social media sites, including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, YouTube and Blogger. The bogus identities were for staff who supposedly worked for a fictitious news agency as well as defence workers, an accountant and a naval IT administrator.

Friends, relatives, workmates and acquaintances of targets were initially contacted via social media to establish ties that were later used to lend more credibility to requests to connect to the true targets of the campaign.

About 2,000 people were used to establish these lower-level ties, which were used to go after a smaller group of about 200 higher-profile individuals.

The VA scandal is exploding right now. Both sides are getting disgusted by what they are finding out and I have a feeling it’s just the tip of the iceberg.

NPR:

Floodgates open as Democrats join Republicans in calls for Shinseki’s resignation

Demands for Shinseki to resign reach fever pitch: Calls for Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki to step down grew louder on Capitol Hill Wednesday following the release of an inspector general report that determined agency officials at a facility in Phoenix had manipulated scheduling records to hide long wait times for former service members. The investigation found that the average wait time for a veteran seeking an initial appointment at the Phoenix VA hospital was 115 days, while the average wait time reported to the department was 24 days. The interim report also determined that the scheduling practices at the Phoenix facility “are a systemic problem nationwide.” The findings opened the floodgates on Capitol Hill, where lawmakers in both parties issued statements calling for Shinseki’s ouster. The Democrats pushing for Shinseki’s dismissal included Sens. Mark Udall of Colorado, Kay Hagan of North Carolina, John Walsh of Montana, Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire and Al Franken of Minnesota. All five are running for re-election this fall, with Udall, Hagan and Walsh facing tough contests. Democratic Reps. Bruce Braley of Iowa, Scott Peters of California and Ron Barber of Arizona also called on Shinseki to resign. Braley is running for the Senate, while Peters and Barber have difficult re-election races on their hands.

It’s a bunch of BS. A dog and pony show since the real tragedy is Congress refusing to properly fund the VA. And compared to private hospital systems the VA surveys out as well or better in terms of service.

Yes, there are issues in Phoenix. But it’s more isolated in scope than a massive system-wide scandal. Perhaps Shinseki should step down by taking responsibility for being in charge of the system. But Congressmen like McCain, etc. yelling for it is the highest form of hypocrisy since they have never taken the same level of responsibility themselves for anything.

Boko Haram kills 35 in attacks on Nigeria villages

Dozens of Boko Haram gunmen dressed in military uniform stormed Gumushi, Amuda and Arbokko in all-terrain trucks and motorcycles, opening fire on residents and torching homes with petrol bombs, they said.

“Boko Haram attacked the three villages Wednesday morning in which 35 people were killed, including 26 in Gumushi,” a military officer in the state capital Maiduguri told AFP on condition of anonymity.

“The insurgents hurled petrol bombs into homes, setting them ablaze and shot residents as they tried to escape,” he said.

He said the gunmen raided Gumushi around 6:00 am (0500 GMT) where they killed 26 residents.

Local media however put the death toll in Gumushi at 42.

Conservative Senator: Gay Marriage Will Become Law Of The Land

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch conceded Wednesday it’s only a matter of time before gay marriage is legal across the country, even though he doesn’t think that’s the right way to go.

Hatch said people who can’t see what’s happening aren’t living in the real world. He made the remarks during an appearance on KSL-Radio’s Doug Wright Show (bit.ly).

“Let’s face it: anybody who does not believe that gay marriage is going to be the law of the land just hasn’t been observing what’s going on,” said Hatch, a seven-term Republican senator who has been a proponent of keeping marriage exclusively between a man and a woman.

re: #227 Feline Fearless Leader

It’s a bunch of BS. A dog and pony show since the real tragedy is Congress refusing to properly fund the VA. And compared to private hospital systems the VA surveys out as well or better in terms of service.

Yes, there are issues in Phoenix. But it’s more isolated in scope than a massive system-wide scandal. Perhaps Shinseki should step down by taking responsibility for being in charge of the system. But Congressmen like McCain, etc. yelling for it is the highest form of hypocrisy since they have never taken the same level of responsibility themselves for anything.

Have you gone over and read the Stonekettle Station blog post on this yet? Worth the read.

Yeah, it was Bill Clinton.

The State Department is lucky they didn’t end up with Ambassador at Large for International Blowjobs. Though in retrospect that’s not a bad idea, because really when you think about it isn’t international diplomacy mostly about oral gratification? You want to get through to fanatical religious leaders, I’m just saying, hhhhhhmmmmm, spit, spit, and then cigars. We’d be pals with Iran in no time.

286 A Mom Anon  May 29, 2014 7:45:18am

re: #225 Targetpractice

I think what’s also not helping is that no one is telling the full story. The VA has had more funds thrown at it, BUT! that money isn’t being used properly, it’s not NEARLY enough and there are not enough VA facilities to take care of the influx of returning veterans. The population of the Phoenix metro area, just as one example, has doubled in the last 30 yrs, but they only have one big VA hospital to serve all the vets in that area (and probably beyond).

This is really an administrative issue, if what I am reading is correct. The VA and DOD are not sharing info either, which is ridiculous. Some vets are having to carry their actual paper medical files back and forth, which is also seriously sad and stupid. Most vets are happy with the standard of care they receive, it’s just getting to that care that’s the problem. Administrators are incentivized to cut corners, which is at the heart of this “new scandal”.

Meanwhile, the GOP keeps voting to cut everything for vets, from job training to housing, unemployment benefits and god knows what else. They want to break the system so they can let their paymasters at those billions of dollars, and sadly, I’m starting to see a lot of their idiot supporters agree with them. Not realizing of course that if private companies take over, then the primary loyalty will be to shareholders and executive pay and not the vets. Which is what the bastards do with every damned thing they touch.

I’ve come to the conclusion we don’t have a news media anymore. It’s all entertainment. Once there were 7 billion cable stations and millions of internet sites…hard questioning, digging for facts and really going for a story went out the window.

Everyone is in it for the advertising ratings, and since the audiences are split over so many outlets now, they can’t do anything to upset one viewer lest it hit their ratings points and kills their ad revenue.

I haven’t had cable in 3 yrs, and was flipping through the channels at both my granddaughter’s and DIL’s houses. Interestingly, for every channel I recognized, there were probably 20 I didn’t. Lots of infomercial channels, from both corps and individuals shilling their shit, along with quite a number of religious channels.

I think I made the right decision not to keep cable.

There are no “perfect” people in the world. We all try to blow ourselves up in a nice presentation, whether physical or mental, but the fact remains that we are all products of our genes and we are all flawed in some way, some more obviously than others and some not even diagnosed who therefore can’t get help. Therefore, it’s always incumbent on us to respect the humanity of others—totally and regardless of what condition they’re in, whether diagnosed or not. Science is evolving as well as we are, and to try to fault people for who they are is an exercise in hate and ignorance.

The very word “interviews” is something I only experienced a couple of times, both in corporate situations, once in HR and finally in the dept in which I’d be working and done by the mgr. No one else had input, no matter who I wound up working for. I don’t know if these multiple interviews is good or bad, but it’s certainly wearing on the person who has to go through it.

Also, I’d like to point out the logic fail of the “false flag” people as it relates to mass shootings.

These kind of incidents have been getting major media attention since the mid to late 1990s.

So apparently these people believe every mass shooting from Columbine onward has been engineered to attempt to get gun control laws passed.

The problem is that if this were true, it would mean this plan has been a catastrophic failure since none of those shootings have resulted in many changes to gun laws. It would also mean the “gun grabbers” are apparently content to keep bodies piling up in pursuit of a goal they haven’t even come remotely close to reaching.

Yeah, that race thing. I used to tell minority women I knew who actually had the qualifications to apply to the law firm that fired me in 1994 (the sr partner said he’d never hire a Black person). I would tell them when they showed up to ask for an application if I had to fill in the front desk for some reason (I was the only paralegal who had to do that).

I told the ones I knew they were probably as qualified as any person already there (since he hired on “appearance” more than actual qualifications more than a few times) and if they didn’t get called back or actually get hired, to file an EEOC complaint. Evidently, after I left (and had filed both a sex & race complaint of my own when I was fired and got a settlement), the face of that office changed considerably, although only at the clerical level. They still don’t have any female or Black lawyers, though. Every one of the people I used to work with, even the younger ones, are no longer there.

I cheated once as well. It was a paintball match: USN vs. USMC. The ref came to our side (USN) and gave us the instructions and then went to the USMC side to provide the same instructions. Once again people don’t quite get that the fact that there’s a drought in areas that are already classified as a desert means that those already dry areas are getting even less precipitation.

But let’s focus on a more serious issue.

How many millions of Americans have moved into areas that are considered arid/semi-desert/desert regions? That pretty much encompasses the Southwest from California to Texas. Tens of millions rely on water from the Colorado River, and it’s running with a fraction of the average water flow from earlier in the 20th century when the Colorado River compact was signed and before millions moved to Arizona and Nevada to live in the desert.

Some of these areas, including the California Central Valley, were turned into agricultural production areas due to construction of massive water diversion projects.

With the drought, those areas aren’t getting the water they need, so fields are going fallow, crops are shriveling, and aquifers are being stressed beyond capacity to easily recover.

[ed]: And now that those areas are being hit with the severe drought, that pushes food prices higher because less supply with demand remaining where it is. That’s affecting everything from the price of fruit and vegetables to beef and chickens.

Witness the rice farmers of south TX

mysanantonio.com

However, population growth and six years of drought have pitted the needs of upriver municipalities with downriver agriculture.

Though the Highland Lakes — which refers to the reservoirs west of Austin, including Lake Buchanan and Lake Travis — have provided a source of water for farmers for decades, downriver farmers have been cut off from the reservoirs for the past three years. And last week, the state environmental agency proposed changes to the Lower Colorado River Authority’s water management plan that would cut farmers off to more water in the future.

Last I checked, even the best poll numbers for McConnell showed him pulling even with Grimes. Even Rasmussen has had poll numbers in recent weeks showing Grimes with the upper hand. McConnell’s really hoping at this point that the party base is so scared come November of Democrats possibly keeping the Senate that they’re willing to hold their nose and keep Mitch in office for another term.

I had hoped the ACA would prevent this sort of thing

CA man’s treatment for dozens of tumors not medically necessary, insurance carrier says

Jeffrey Rusch, of Sonoma County, said an MRI revealed more than 20 tumors in his brain, and a CT scan two days later revealed a large tumor in his lungs and others in his liver and bones.

“My husband was having a lot of difficulty breathing already, and he was getting a lot worse, so we went to the hospital and they admitted him immediately,” said his wife, Zoe Keating.

Doctors removed a half-liter of fluid from Rusch’s lungs, prescribed steroids to reduce brain swelling, and administered emergency chemotherapy.

But the family’s health insurance carrier, Anthem Blue Cross, sent them a letter that arrived Tuesday denying coverage for the hospital stay, saying the treatments did not meet the criteria for medical necessity.

Chilling.

Ramstein, 29 May 2014 - On 27 and 28 May 2014 seven NATO nations and two Partnership for Peace (PfP) member nations trained in the airspace over Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania during the 18th Baltic Region Training Event (BRTE 18). The large training audience during this 18th sequel of BRTE became possible because NATO quadrupled its Baltic Air Policing (BAP) mission in May. The Polish are the BAP lead nation at Siauliai Air Base, Lithuania. They are supported by the British (also at Siauliai), the Danish at Ämari, Estonia, and the French at Malbork, Poland.

There is not enough salt in the sea to excuse Larison’s inclusion. Just my opinion, which seems to be fairly uncommon. I seem to surprise a lot of liberals with the news that Larison is a proud member of the League of the South.

Let me take this opportunity to say a few words about the League of the South, a group to which I am proud to belong for these past ten years. This group of ladies and gentlemen, for whom such terms still have their traditional meaning, endeavours to preserve their Southern, Christian cultural, religious and political heritage from the ravages of the same freethinking, Yankee spirit and empire that has gone on to devastate so many other societies, including that of those northern states gulled into the cause of Unionism. Though my lineage is almost entirely from the North, ours were the sort of conservative and republican people who opposed usurpation at every turn, and as much as my kinsman, William Plumer of New Hampshire, was right in arguing for secession over the illegalities of the Louisiana Purchase the Southern states were even more justified in resisting the usurpation of their rights. In the League of the South, I see the natural home of anyone who would honour and venerate the legacy of his ancestors and the early fathers of this country.

RTWT, if it’s not too close to lunch. He continues in the comments.

The defeat of the Confederacy, though the Confederate political experiment does not exhaust the richness of Southern culture and identity, was a defining moment when the United States took its steps towards the abyss of the monstrous centralised state, rootless society and decadent culture that we have today. In sum, the Confederacy represented much of the Old America that was swept away, and with it went everything meaningful about the constitutional republican system, and the degeneration of that system in the next hundred years was the logical and ultimately unstoppable result of Lincoln’s victory. All of this is in recognition that we are beholden to our ancestors for who we are, and we honour and remember their struggles and accomplishments not only because they can be established as reasonable, good and true but because they are the struggles and accomplishments of our people, who have made this land ours and sanctified it with their blood in defense against the wanton aggression of a barbarous tyranny.

Of the 1,477 persons on board the ship, 1,012 died.[1][2] The number of deaths is the largest of any Canadian maritime accident in peacetime.

More than 50 direct descendants of people who died in one of Liverpool’s greatest shipping tragedies will attend a commemoration service today, 100 years to the day of the disaster.

The service for the 1,012 who were lost on RMS Empress of Ireland will take place in Liverpool Parish Church, as did the original memorial service for those who died 100 years ago.

No log of incoming email from Snowden to IG or anyone else purporting whistleblowing or raising concerns. No provision of copy of sent email indicating the same.

IOW, he didn’t send anything raising those concerns through channels, and instead is now looking to retcon that he was trying to do things through channels before engaging in espionage and stealing NSA documents and spilling them to Greenwald and others, undermining US national security and foreign policy in the process - all in the hopes of disrupting US national security and foreign policy, as well as disrupting relations with allies and fomenting anger and vitriol against the US and other Western intel agencies that worked with the NSA or purported to share intel in some form.

He is a delusional fool who has manage to delude like minded people into thinking he’s a hero for undermining US national security. Ostensibly, it was about the NSA violating US civil rights, and yet document after document released and written about by Poitras, Greenwald, and others either indicates that there were protections in place, there were levels of scrutiny, or that the programs revealed had nothing to do with violating US law (US civil rights, US constitution or otherwise), but everything to do with revealing classified programs that had been working to gather intel on foreign persons/entities/countries.

BTW, has Greenwald named names yet on those who have been spied upon? Wasn’t there some deadly deadline he was going to wait until before revealing? I wait with baited breath.

The Dearborn automaker said it is calling back 2008-2011 Escape SUVs in North America under pressure from Canadian auto safety regulators, who have been investigating the issue since late 2011. Ford told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration it has reports of five crashes and six injuries in U.S. crashes connected to the issue.
Ford said because of poor signal-to-noise issues in the torque sensor, the vehicles’ power steering system may shut off and default to manual steering, which could make it harder to steer and lead to a crash. Ford will notify owners by July 25.

Presumably, to substitute for their lack of the real deal.

It’s pretty annoying to listen to him ask for proof of harm to US intelligence efforts. He knows damn well that giving specific proof of harm in most cases will reveal even more that should be kept secret.

Please do not insult the beloved Walter Sobchak by comparing him to John Cole.

Hey Charles!

So, what did you think of the big Snowden interview last night? Would you care to give us a few comments. I’d be interested on your take because much of it seems to go to what many around here at LGF thought just days after it broke last year.

re: #591 lawhawk

No log of incoming email from Snowden to IG or anyone else purporting whistleblowing or raising concerns. No provision of copy of sent email indicating the same.
///SNIPPAGE….

BTW, has Greenwald named names yet on those who have been spied upon? Wasn’t there some deadly deadline he was going to wait until before revealing? I wait with baited breath.

Of course there are no log, the NSA has changed the logs, and the logs of the changes of the logs…. /////

As for the baited breath, all I can say is that I’ve been that way since the initial announcement, and that piece of cheese is getting pretty nasty. I also found mice clustered around my pillow this morning.
