The Sneering Dishonesty and Hypocrisy of Glenn Greenwald, Part 294

A public service announcement from LGF
Weird • Views: 45,892

It won’t come as a shock to anyone who reads LGF that I have zero respect for Glenn Greenwald; the man is a raving egomaniac with no ethics or honesty who poses as the most ethical and honest person in the world, and a vicious smear artist who specializes in character assassination of anyone who criticizes him. And he’s been this way for as long as I’ve been aware of him.

And yet, the US media almost universally continues giving him a pass on his sleazy tactics, and almost never calls him out when he trips over his own feet — which isn’t really that rare.

I’d like to draw your attention to two examples of this egregiously dishonest behavior today.

First, as most people know by now, Edward Snowden’s claim that he sent numerous emails to the NSA reporting abuse and “whistleblowing” has now exploded. It turns out that the only email he sent to the NSA General Counsel has absolutely nothing to do with whistleblowing; it was an innocuous question about a legal point that was already publicly answered on the NSA’s website. Furthermore, Snowden sent the email in April 2013; at that point, according to his own accounts, he was already stealing as much top secret material as he could, was already committed to fleeing the country, and was already in touch with Greenwald — which renders absurd any claim that he was “whistleblowing” or trying to go through channels.

On the night of Edward Snowden’s interview with Brian Williams, NBC News claimed to have “confirmed” that Snowden sent emails reporting abuse, causing Glenn Greenwald to exclaim triumphantly:

The “biggest news!” But unfortunately for the Mighty Greenwald, this turned out to be completely false. So how did he respond when it became clear the email didn’t “confirm” his (and Snowden’s) claims at all? Well, now it suddenly becomes “irrelevant.”

From “biggest news” to “irrelevant” in a single day. I think Greenwald has set a new world record for speed of hypocrisy.

Our second example of Greenwaldian sleaze: remember when he got into a huge, very public fight with Julian Assange of Wikileaks about redacting the name of a country from one of his reports? Greenwald said he was completely convinced that revealing the name of the country would “cause deaths.” And since Greenwald’s default position is to assume everything the US government says is a lie, the argument they made for redacting the country must have been very compelling indeed.

Then, Wikileaks carried out their threat to reveal the country. Since Greenwald said he was utterly convinced that doing this would cause people to die, you’d think he would condemn Assange for being so incredibly cavalier with human lives.

You might think that, but you’d be wrong; Greenwald has not said a single word about this subject since Wikileaks revealed the country. No condemnation, not even mild protest. Nothing.

This has been your public service announcement for today, trying to blow the whistle on a destructive, malignant libertarian extremist masquerading as a journalist.

The information cannot have caused deaths, and will not cause deaths, because it came from Snowjob information, and Snowjob carefully vetted all of the millions of documents he stole, and Snowjob took nothing that might cause any harm to anyone, so therefore no deaths will be caused.

It’s just science.

Mr. Greenwald is selling the rights to his book and may include his own life rights. But his journalistic collaborator, Laura Poitras, and Mr. Snowden have not put their own life rights for sale, according to the people briefed on the film. That leaves potential buyers to rely on legal precepts of fair use in portraying them, or on their assurances that they will not seek to interfere with a movie.”

Look at this transcript of 5/29/14, which Godwald is promoting as “proof” of Kerry’s hypocrisy about Snowjob. I do believe that “Matt”, who is going after Jen Psaki like a bulldog, is Taibbi who now works for The Intercept.

state.gov

I find this line of questioning pretty interesting, considering there has been no definitive proof from Snowjob, Godwald or any of them that information collected by the NSA has damaged one single person thus far.

QUESTION: Thanks. In the interview, Mr. Snowden says that his disclosures have not caused any damage. Does this Department agree with that assessment?

MS. PSAKI: Well, Secretary Kerry spoke to this yesterday during an interview with NBC about his view that it has caused damage, and that’s one of the reasons we’re so concerned. And a range of Administration officials have made that point as well.

QUESTION: But there hasn’t been actually - hasn’t been any proof that it’s caused damage. It’s easy for you to say it’s caused damage, but without actually providing proof that it has, how do we know that’s correct?

MS. PSAKI: Well, because a countless number of Administration officials, some under oath during testimony, have stated that it has, and they have talked as extensively as they can.

QUESTION: But can you give a specific example or even a broader example of where it has compromised your counterterrorism operations, for example?

MS. PSAKI: I’m not going to lay out specifics along those lines. A lot of those obviously don’t happen out of this building. If there are more to share, I’m sure we will. But again, there have been a range of testimony, interviews on this issue, and there’s been broad agreement on that front.

Sorry, I was preparing some dinner over the last hour and didn’t get to answer some of your comments/questions in the previous thread.

Regarding some of MakeItStop’s comments about noisy single coils. He is right, they can be noise generators. If you missed it, I mentioned I had the local guitar guru put in a Seymour Duncan double stack. It looks just like a single coil in a tele or strat, but it is two coils deep so one cancels out the hum of the other…just like a Humbucker. My main Tradition ‘58-like Tele is as quiet as a guitar with humbuckers. It gives it a deep growling sound and very different from a normal Tele. Check into double-stacks.

About the Vox amps. My Vavletronic is a 100 watt class A-B type amp. I don’t know if you have studied the differences, but the Vox AC30 is a class A amp. A 30 watt class A is about as strong and loud as a 100 watt AB. That is a simplified answer, but something else for you to check into.

Further proof that Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden is quite possibly the most awesome man alive.

We are thrilled to announce a very special treat for all attending Sonisphere Festival on Saturday July 5th. The Great War Display Team, a group of pilots which includes IRON MAIDEN vocalist Bruce Dickinson among its illustrious members, will stage a spectacular 12 minute air display in the skies above Knebworth at approximately 6pm.

This unique and audacious “dogfight” will commemorate the 100th Anniversary of The Great War; a 21st Century tribute to the daring - and often downright dangerous - exploits of both the English and German pilots who ruled Europe’s skies between 1914-1918. The show features nine aircraft of 5 different types, all exact replicas of the planes used in WW1 combat. Bruce will be flying his very own Fokker Dr1 Triplane, the same model used by infamous German flying ace Manfred von Richthofen aka The Red Baron. Also from the German side there is a Junkers CL1. Of the British planes in the show, there is a Sopwith Triplane, a BE2c and a SE5a. I’m still not sure how much he is a True Believer, and how much he’s just going after a juicy target of opportunity. Lots of money to be made turning over dirty stones of any government, but he can rest assured that his current shit-on-the-US venture is less, uh, polonium-flavored than some other options.

Maybe he wasn’t a true believer last year when he broke the story, when dollar signs just popped up everywhere. But he’s been on the exact same beat the whole time. Maybe he’s convinced himself that the government is spying on everybody all the time for nefarious ends.

How can one live with that kind of paranoia hanging over their minds? I don’t see a lot of joy in their lives.

I have to retell this classic joke, if you’ve heard it before just upding. :)

Bryan Fischer was walking along the beach when he stepped on something in the sand. He looked down and picked up an ancient lamp. He rubbed off the sand and sure enough, out came a genie!

“Master!” cried the genie. “I am here to grant you three wishes!!”

Bryan said “How do I know you are not an evil demon sent by Satan to tempt me!”

“On no” said the genie, “I am an angel sent to Jesus himself to grant you three wishes.”

“Well,” said Bryan, “in that case, I wish that the South had won the War Between The States!”

“It is done!” cried the genie, “you are now standing upon the shores of the Gulf of Mississippi of the Confederate States!”

“And I wish the gays were banned!”

“There are no gays in Mississippi any more,” said the genie.

Bryan said, “and I wish that I lived on a big plantation!”

“Your wish is my command!” The genie snapped his fingers and Bryan found himself standing in a cotton field, in bare feet, a burlap sack around his neck. The overseer yelled “You lazy N-word” and Bryan felt the lash on his back.

“Wait wait!” cried Bryan, “this is not what I wished for!”

He heard the genie’s voice: “You had three wishes, and I didn’t hear you say that you wanted to be a white man.”

Yes the genie was an angel sent to teach a very important lesson.

It really bothers me that not only do a lot of journalists agree with Glenn Greenwald, they downright revere him. They can’t see for the life of them that Glenn Greenwald hates this country and wants to destroy its government.

There’s *headslap*, then *headdesk*. What’s the next level up?

I think the reason the journalists are big on Greenwald right now is because he is in the news. He is the big man right now. Which is rather odd seeing as a journalist isn’t supposed to be the news, just dig for and report the news.

More example of how they really are not journalists. Like Justanotherhuman comments, they are too into themselves. It’s all ego-stoking, back-patting bullshit. Notice there seems to be an age line here too. Old journalists are retiring and being replaced by the new. It seems the new have been trained to go for the big hit and ratings. That wasn’t that important as a fact-based, well-researched big news busting story to the old timers. Of course, that is just my opinion.

Eh, yellow journalism was certainly a thing. I’ve heard the name “Hearst”, and so have you.

It’s always been shit, we just see more of the shit now that we have THE POWER OF THE INTERNET.

Oh yeah, we have had yellow journalism. But we also had good journalism too. And a lot of it was small outlets that were independent from politics, corporations, etc. I think it also stemmed from competition. Look how many papers used to exist in just one major city. Look how many different magazines existed just in news. Almost all gone.

Hearst actually is a great example of what has happened to much of the newer stuff. As much as many hated him and his publications, it also appears many studied his power and influence and use it today. Hurst compared to Murdoch. But where are the smaller papers. They are either out of business or Gannett(ed).

As far as the ‘net goes. It will be interesting to see how it works out. Still somewhat new and there are some decent different viewpoints. For now. But, what happens if Comcast gets to dictate who gets to be more easily accessed than others? The whole ‘net neutrality thing could really pinch the ‘net too.

But let me ask you one thing. If it is all shit, who do you look to and who do you trust?

You seem more cynical about it than I am. And, if you say, you trust your own thoughts based on the information you can glean from wherever, how do you know you can have any amount of trust in any of it? Especially if it is all shit.

I still don’t know who that guy is. But Martinez was a Democrat until…

“Martinez decided to run against the incumbent district attorney in 1996 while still a registered Democrat, like most voters in Doña Ana County. Local Republicans invited her and her husband, Chuck Franco, to lunch to discuss issues such as the death penalty, taxes and government spending. Martinez suspected they were on a recruiting mission.

“I remember telling my husband, ‘We’re going to be very polite. We’re going to say thank you very much and we’re going to leave,’ ” she said. Afterward, “We got in the car, we looked at each other and said, ‘Oh my God, we are Republicans! Now what do we do?’ “

“She switched her party registration, fully expecting to lose the election, but drew enough Democratic crossover votes to defeat her opponent. She handily won three reelection races — the last time running unopposed.”

If he were a Republican candidate, it would probably increase his support in the primary.

Since he’s a Democrat, I suspect it will result in the opposite.

But hey, most people are smart enough to realize that there are going to be racists in both parties. I end up paying more attention to what the party policies are, and there is a substantial difference there.

Martinez knew very little of her own roots (including a great-grandfather who was a Mexican general in the Mexican War in 1910). In fact, she asserted that her grandparents arrived in the US illegally, until she found out differently. I can’t imagine not knowing something about my own relatives, such as my own grandmother, her parents, etc. In fact, we have old photos of my great-grandparents (maternal) and my grandmother as a small child. I also have studio and candid photos of my grandmother as well.

Her opponent is a racist asshole, no question. And I hope he gets beaten over the head with his racist bullshit until he loses the election.

That doesn’t invalidate my criticism of Latino Republicans, however. They vote for and pass laws that hurt their fellow minorities because they think they’re rich and above everyone else. That’s a fact.

I fiscal conservative who doesn’t believe in female bodily autonomy?

That’s what Gov. Martinez is.

Okay. Pro life I see.
I’m referring to my friend though. I really don’t know anything about the candidates.

After a look at Wiki I see she is said to be very popular, odd in a majority Dem state.

Polling and opinion[edit]
Martinez has one of the highest approval rating of current governors in the United States, according to A Public Opinion Strategies survey, conducted for Martinez’s campaign.[36] Her approval ratings have not dropped below 60% in her tenure as governor.[37][38][39][40] In an April 2012 edition of the Washington Post, Martinez was named 8th most popular governor in the United States.[41]
As of May 2013, Martinez had an approval rating of 66%,[42][43] with over 44% of Democrats in New Mexico stating they approve of her.[44]
As of January 2014, A poll conducted by Research and Polling Inc., an Albuquerque-based pollster, on behalf of Common Cause New Mexico pegged Martinez’s approval rating at 55 percent.[45]
Political positions[edit]
In 1995, Martinez changed her membership from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party.[46][47][48] On August 29, 2012, Martinez gave a speech to the Republican National Convention where she spoke right before Paul Ryan and described her decision to switch parties. She told the story that she was taken to lunch by Republican friends who wanted her to switch parties. She stated that she was going just to be polite, but when she left the luncheon with her husband, she had changed her mind. She told the convention, “When we left that lunch, we got in the car and I looked over at Chuck and said, ‘I’ll be damned - we’re Republicans.”[49]
Martinez supports a balanced budget and lower government spending. She favors putting taxpayer money into a rainy day fund, and refunding taxpayers to attempt to stimulate growth.[50] Martinez is pro-life and is opposed to elective abortion.[51] Martinez is opposed to same-sex marriage, but has no record on civil unions.[52] Martinez opposes New Mexico’s medical marijuana program, but has indicated that repealing New Mexico’s existing law is not a priority.[53]

OA, thanks for the answer. My Tele has a horrible hum, which is usually drowned out by all the other instruments lol. I’ll look into the Vox’s more. I’ve heard positive and negative about the Line 6’s. I like some of the tones, but want to consider all options. Love the warmth of the tubes. Especially liked them on my bass. Soooo warm!

Part of the problem is single coil pickups are giant antennas, but a surprising amount of the problem is the wiring inside the guitar. The electronics on high-end guitars are constructed to a standard that would make Chinese manufactures of cheap knock-off mp3 players blush. Generally, you’ll see no shielding what-so-ever and ground loops.

I’ve got two electrics (one maple and one rosewood), I shielded both. One with aluminum foil, one with copper tape (with conductive adhesive). Both work, the copper tape was easier to work with. The instructions here: guitarnuts.com are what I followed. They’re specifically for Strats, but are adaptable to all guitars (one of mine is a strat clone, and the other is an ‘89 Peavey Nitro).

It’s not perfect, but it can help a lot. You do also have to be pretty handy with a soldering iron to get it to come out well (I was working as a technician in a physics lab when I did my first guitar). If you aren’t terribly handy, it is possible to add shorts to the circuitry and make things a lot worse.

Bruce Schneier: NSA Spying Is Making Us Less Safe

September 23, 2013

Bruce Schneier, a cryptographer and author on security topics, last month took on a side gig: helping the Guardian newspaper pore through documents purloined from the U.S. National Security Agency by contractor Edward Snowden, lately of Moscow.

In recent months that newspaper and other media have issued a steady stream of revelations, including the vast scale at which the NSA accesses major cloud platforms, taps calls and text messages of wireless carriers, and tries to subvert encryption.

This year Schneier is also a fellow at Harvard’s Berkman Center for Internet and Society. In a conversation there with David Talbot, chief correspondent of MIT Technology Review, Schneier provided perspective on the revelations to date—and hinted that more were coming.

Bruce Schneier: Technology Magnifies Power in Surveillance Era
Excerpts:

“I think this is the issue by which we will be judged when our grandchildren read the history of the early days of the Internet,” said Bruce Schneier today during his Source Boston keynote.

Schneier, who has been involved in reviewing the Snowden documents and advising journalists on how to best disseminate them, has been lecturing not only at security conferences, but to public policy makers on the risks of ubiquitous data.

“Surveillance is the business model of the Internet,” Schneier said. “We build systems that spy on people in exchange for services.”

IMO, Schneier seems to know what he’s talking about. Greenwald, not so much.

So at what point is it not merely the MBF to call out a racist from the left side of the aisle?

Good question.

For me it depends greatly on who is doing the calling out, even though that may seem completely unreasonable and unfair at first. When Republican leaders and elected officials do so, I think it fair to regard this as intrinsically MBF bullshit because these are the very same people that perpetuate the GOP’s ongoing problems in this area. Since they could not possibly care less about racism etc. based on their own policy positions, it is clear that any time they criticize Democrats for being racist it is pure political opportunism.

When people who aren’t so closely tied to the crimes of the GOP (but still identify as GOP or conservative) do this, it gets murkier. Racism on the left is fair game for criticism, but people who identify as GOP/conservative are on really shaky ground for making such criticism. After all, what are these people doing about the racist jackasses in charge of the GOP?

IMO, the sensible GOP/conservative types badly need to get the GOP back on track as a sane and acceptable alternative (although I have to admit I see no way at all for that to happen).

Because of that exchange with Ben Ward, the embedded tweet routines are now a bit snappier — previously I needed to use a delay of about a quarter of a second before displaying the tweet, to make sure it had been correctly rendered by Twitter’s code.

Now I’m able to completely get rid of that delay and show the tweet the instant it’s rendered and ready. Much nicer.

The bit about detecting deleted/etc. tweets also helped a lot — I also got rid of a one-second delay there, that was necessary to detect whether the tweet had actually been rendered. So deleted tweets now pop up almost instantly.

Snappy is good.

…keeping in mind that that average number is going to include the (substantial) effect of higher infant mortality.

And hey all

Just spent three days with a friend I haven’t literally seen in 38 YEARS

We reconnected about 8 months ago via FaceBook, been talking online since. He arrived Tuesday, left this afternoon.

I’ve heard it said that sattv4u2 is an acquired taste, sort of like natto or durian fruit.

So at what point is it not merely the MBF to call out a racist from the left side of the aisle?

Aisle implies the person holds a seat on either side of it, so I’d say when they have actually occupied elected office ever in their lifetime, or are an official candidate, or represent the Democratic Party officially, as something other than just a random assclown in a five way primary.

I’m aware. He’s also in the NSA camp (some recent and not-so-recent consultations) and the US Congress camp.

I just have some real problems with libertarians and those who consort with them.

I don’t want govt to be so transparent that every bit of our business is “out there” for even those who would tear us down or harm us to have notice of it.

If the internet was as secure as some want the govt to be “open”, we’d be a lot better off.

Possibly, but if you made it to age 21 in medieval Britain, you could expect to make it to about 64.

AND ,,, 25 years old ( the age that started this) would be almost middle age with 64 being what you could expect to make it at

But it (to pardon the pun) paints a very different picture of the 25 year old artist painting a portrait.

Very true. They only claim to care about the life of a fetus because that gives them a weapon to use in the war on women.

I think the major word is control.

If you are being selfish and scoring points toward heaven, then saving others must up the score. Controlling others and how they think and behave must help you ‘save’ the others and up the score.

All of it flies against Christianity as far as it has been explained to me. But they pass over the big lessons all the time. I guess saving yourself is not as big a deal of manipulating others.

re: #232 sattv4u2

Life expectancy in the 1600’s was somewhere just north of 35(ish)

But that’s largely the result of high child mortality. If you survived childhood you could expect to live into your 50’s, and a significant number of people made it into their 70’s.
