Talking about shredding,

I just went out to cut the grass and ended up shredding our dandelion crop.
The grass must have run away during the winter and the dandelions have completely taken over.

[Embedded content]

Damn right. He could privatize it then shut it down.

McCain is trying to get someone he trusts into the post. Frankly, I’m not sure Coburn has the leadership skills needed for the job, but its worth looking into.

Moreover, its a constructive suggestion, instead of backbiting. I doubt the DoVA’s major problems will be fixed as a result of this scandal, but the only chance for that to happen will require a bipartisan effort in Congress that keeps the great majority of the department’s facilities running as part of the government.

Privatizing the care of military veterans would still leave the government with the cost of their treatment and the cost of such a changeover would be immense. Therefore such a plan is not prudent. Allowing more external care options without shutting down existing services is more viaable and will likely need to be done to clear the DoVA’s backlog.

From the NYT link in Mithter Thor’th tweet:

[…]

The latest evidence indicating that Sergeant Bergdahl, who was promoted twice while held prisoner, was still alive came in January, when a video was obtained by the American military showing him alert but also apparently in declining health.

One Defense Department official said that once Sergeant Bergdahl was safely aboard the American military helicopter flown to the rendezvous, he wrote on a paper plate with a pen — because it was so loud — “S.F.?” seeking to find out if his rescuers were American Special Forces.

One soldier yelled back, “Yes, we’ve been looking for you for a long time,” at which point, the Pentagon official said, Sergeant Bergdahl broke down crying.

I’m glad he’s coming home. Five years is a long time.

Yes! Finally fixed an annoying problem.

One of the things about allowing embedded tweets in comments is that they don’t actually get rendered in their final size until the page finishes loading.

Why is this a problem? Because if you’re on the front page, and you click a user’s name at bottom right of a post to go directly to their comment, if there happen to be any embedded tweets in the comment thread above that user’s comment, the page first jumps to that user’s comment but then it gets pushed down out of view as the embedded tweets are dynamically created above it.

Very annoying. And now fixed, thanks to the info I got from Twitter’s Ben Ward yesterday.

Now, when a page of comments loads, and there are any embedded tweets or timelines in it, you’ll automagically jump directly to the comment you wanted, immediately after all the embedded Twitter stuff is rendered.

You might see the comment briefly get pushed down, but then it will jump back up, because you gotta get up to get down.

I’m really glad to finally solve this; it was maddening.

Sgt. Bergdahl was a legitimate prisoner of war, not a kidnap victim. The exchange is in no way equivalent to negotiating for the release of kidnap victims. Exchanges of PoWs have been commonplace throughout history. GOP base ignorami do not know this, they have no idea in fact, so their money grubbing leadership can once again exploit ignorance for profit.

Expectations are low inside the Obama administration that the new outreach to the Taliban will have much success in bringing him home, however. In 2011 and 2012, an interagency team led by America’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, Marc Grossman, had several direct interactions with the Taliban over the prisoner swap idea. Those talks fizzled.

The five prisoners we don’t have to feed anymore were pretty senior Taliban, but they have been on ice for many years and their relevance to future events is unclear to say the least.

—Abdul Haq Wasiq, who served as the Taliban deputy minister of intelligence

—Mullah Norullah Nori, a senior Taliban commander in the northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif when the Taliban fought U.S. forces in late 2001

—Khairullah Khairkhwa, who served in various Taliban positions including interior minister and had direct ties to Mullah Omar and Osama bin Laden

—Mohammed Nabi, who served as chief of security for the Taliban in Qalat, Afghanistan, and later worked as a radio operator for the Taliban’s communications office in Kabul

—Mohammad Fazl, whom Human Rights Watch says could be prosecuted for war crimes for presiding over the mass killing of Shiite Muslims in Afghanistan in 2000 and 2001 as the Taliban sought to consolidate their control over the country.

Anyone who says we shouldn’t have done this is a fool, and a monstrously cruel one at that. I really have to wonder how much the Bush administration’s tough guy, line in the sand, no negotiation policy had to do with the terrible fate of our captured personnel in Iraq.

The freeper reaction to the Bergdahl release is, on the whole, probably the most evil outburst I have yet seen from them.

They accuse Bergdahl of complicity in his own capture, connect the timing to the VA scandal, and, I shit you not, compare this to Obama’s failure to spring a US Marine jailed on weapons charges in Mexico. Several of them brought up the latter case, it is apparently a meme du jour for the batshit right.

They are demonic monkeys, reveling in their stupidity.

If I am ever capture by the Taliban, I hereby authorize those whom it may concern to exchange me five Gitmo detainees and Rush Limbaugh, Todd Kincannon, Ted Nugent and Ann Coulter.

If the Taliban want the latter five, that is.

If…force ‘em to take all of them. At that point the Taliban can do what they want.

As a matter of fact, who even needs an exchange. Just tell the Taliban if you take some of our nuts, we’ll give you back some prisoners.

Deal?

But then, there is a good chance the Taliban would turn it down.

I have a bipartisan suggestion: Republicans vote with Democrats to fund the VA. This can be a complement to the bipartisan vote 14 years ago to go to war.

Interesting story I found from military.com, linking to a Dayton Daily News article from 2013:

VA Budget Skyrockets Despite Federal Spending Cuts

Despite the “THEY’RE SPENDING OUR MONEYYYY!!!” headline, it’s really a balanced look at the problems the VA has faced over the past few years:

The more than 3 million veterans since the first Gulf War in 1991 who have entered the VA ranks have overwhelmed the system, said Dr. Chrisanne Gordon, a Marysville rehabilitative physician.

“I do feel the system is overwhelmed,” Gordon said. “I would say overwhelmed and slow to respond.”

She’s worked with the Dayton VA to link Iraq and Afghanistan veterans to civilian medical centers. The mostly teaching hospitals have advanced technology to detect traumatic brain injury a normal MRI does not locate, she said.

“I really believe there needs to be collaborative effort between VA and the civilian medical community,” she said. “My belief is in the civilian world we are more accountable and we react quicker.”

The number of veterans and visits have climbed dramatically at the Dayton VA and community clinics in Springfield, Middletown, Lima and Richmond, Ind.

Both figures show why costs have jumped.

Five years ago, the VA treated 32,858 veterans who accounted for 360,946 visits at a cost of $588 per visit. Under Dayton VA projections, those numbers will rise to 36,691 veterans making 470,151 visits at a cost of $607 per visit.

This article came out *before* the current “scandal,” and reflects only the VA in the Dayton area. If you multiply those patient numbers nationwide, is it any wonder there’s a delay in seeing patients in the VA?

109 Shiplord Kirel  May 31, 2014 1:33:10pm

Btw, we released more than 100,000 NVA and Vietcong PoWs as part of the Vietnam Peace Accords that got our 591 PoWs back in 1973.

There has been an outrage
Michigan teacher suspended over blackface lesson

Barron showed the video while teaching his class about Jim Crow racial segregation laws. The video was an example of blackface minstrelsy, which got its name from the white performers who blackened their faces, and was a very popular form of entertainment in 19th-century America.

The video reportedly offended an assistant principal who was sitting in on Barron’s class when he showed it.

However, the video did not offend everyone who saw it. One child, whose father is African-American, could not understand why school officials became upset.

“She was more offended that they stopped the video,” the student’s mother, Adrienne Aaron, told the Monroe News.

“It had nothing to do with racism. History is history,” she added. “We need to educate our kids to see how far we’ve come in America. How is that racism?”

Freepers are now proposing that we round up undocumented immigrants and trade them for the Marine jailed in Mexico. (The guy claims he accidentally drove into Mexico, through a marked checkpoint, with several SA guns in his vehicle.)

What a wonderful idea! If the Mexicans are amenable, we could get all of our captured drug smugglers, gunrunners, rapists, pimps, drunk drivers and fugitive tax cheats back from Mexican prisons.
I am sure we could arrange to lodge them with respectable Texas conservative families until they can resume their former occupations.

Ya know in old movies and books, British Citizens when living or travelling in other parts of the world were “subject of his/her majesty” and that meant something. If they were caught in difficulties the crown did work to get them out of it, on principle.

I thought that was a good thing and one trait we kept after we won the revolution.

Now we have American’s saying “fuck them” about their own soldiers?

And the same people consider themselves to be patriotic?

What did I miss?

143 Lidane  May 31, 2014 2:04:18pm

Dear Open Carry morons,

This is the most important point to think about in Texas. I’ve bolded it for your tiny brains:

According to the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission: “If an individual does choose to carry a rifle or shotgun into a TABC-licensed business, the individual is placing the business owner’s TABC license at risk….a business owner may ask a patron to leave the premises. If the patron refuses, that individual may be subject to criminal trespassing charges under Texas Penal Code Section 30.05.”

There isn’t a single restaurant, bar, or business with a TABC license that is going to lose their business because of your need to bring your penis extension with you. Period. They are not obligated to lose revenue because you can’t live without your AR-15.

Deal. With. It. And leave that shit at home.

No love,
Me

The Vatican has always been very honest about where they get their perceived authority—and it’s not from the bible.

here is a conundrum:

if you quote say kosher restrictions in the o.t. to a bible literalist, they’ll tell you that they don’t have to follow them since the old covenant was superseded by the new covenant

now, some wingnut preachers who i have talked to will agree that if the above is true, then the o.t. should never be used as a source of law

yet others will continue to cite strictures out of the o.t.

for these folks, i have a question to which i have never been able to get a satisfactory answer:

where are the guidelines to what parts of the o.t. are god’s law and which parts can be ignored as belonging to the ‘old covenant’, and who wrote them and by which authority?

of course the real answer is that fundies make up their own minds on which parts of the o.t. they are allowed to ignore and which parts they are allowed to hit you over the head with

Feet are bad, back is worse. I’ve lined up a job as an 11-7 night clerk at a local motel though - tiny more pay, full time, no bennies but free use of the swimming pool. Should be far easier on me than the McD’s job though.

I start training for it on Wednesday. I seem to have clicked well with the manager - i hadn’t finished filling out the application when I was offered the position … ;)

re: #108 BongCrodny

Interesting story I found from military.com, linking to a Dayton Daily News article from 2013:

VA Budget Skyrockets Despite Federal Spending Cuts

Despite the “THEY’RE SPENDING OUR MONEYYYY!!!” headline, it’s really a balanced look at the problems the VA has faced over the past few years:

This article came out *before* the current “scandal,” and reflects only the VA in the Dayton area. If you multiply those patient numbers nationwide, is it any wonder there’s a delay in seeing patients in the VA?

I personally wouldn’t want to see the VA system privatized, I think that it is uniquely suited to the special needs and concerns of veterans, and has the resources to help the best. I do think that it’s criminal that the intake periods are so long, and the system is so overloaded.

Perhaps the best option would be something not unlike the DOD does with the “Tri-care” system. It acts like an HMO, and if you can’t be seen in the base medical facility, you get referred to a civilian one. It’s been how DOD has handled dependent / spouse health care for quite a while now.

Perhaps something like that, the VA acting as a primary provider, but using outside medical centers to also provide services. It should help with clearing the intake backlog and may also help with vets who don’t live close to a VA center.

I think there will remain a place for celibate male & female monastics. That said, married women priests will happen. It’s only a question of when. It’s taken until the past hundred years for the Protestants after all & it’s been a rough time even in my Episcopalian church. But it will happen. The Spirit is leading and trying to heal…

Bergdahl release arrangement could threaten the safety of Americans, Republicans say.

“Trading five senior Taliban leaders from detention in Guantanamo Bay for Bergdahl’s release may have consequences for the rest of our forces and all Americans. Our terrorist adversaries now have a strong incentive to capture Americans. That incentive will put our forces in Afghanistan and around the world at even greater risk,” House Armed Services Committee Chairman Howard P. McKeon (R-Calif.) and the ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, James M. Inhofe (Okla.), said in a joint statement.

Many in Congress will still be opposed to the swap, but lawmakers gave up their right to stop it. A small change in the Fiscal Year 2014 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which passed last December, now makes it only a requirement that the Defense Secretary notify Congress when releasing Guantanamo prisoners. Before the change, Congressional sign off on any Guantanamo releases would have been needed.

In response, the White House said it moved as quickly as possible given the opportunity that arose to secure Bergdahl’s release. Bismillah al rahman al rahim
quran bismillah

The Arabic phrase shown above is pronounced as Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim, and is a beautifully poetic phrase which offers both deep insight and brilliant inspiration. It has often been said that the phrase Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim contains the true essence of the entire Qur’an, as well as the true essence of all religions.

Muslims often say this phrase when embarking on any significant endeavor, and the phrase is considered by some to be a major pillar of Islam. This expression is so magnificent and so concise that all but one chapter of the Qur’an begins with the words Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim.

The common translation:

“In the name of God, most Gracious, most Compassionate”.

fails to capture either the true depth of meaning or the inspirational message of this beautiful phrase. So, let’s look deeper into the meaning of these wonderful words…

Funniest story of the year. Solar Panels using up the sunlight

Scientists at the Wyoming Institute of Technology, a privately-owned think tank located in Cheyenne, Wyoming, discovered that energy radiated from the sun isn’t merely captured in solar panels, but that energy is directly physically drawn from the sun by those panels, in a process they refer to as “forced photovoltaic drainage.”

wtf??

“If every home in the world had solar panels on their roofs, global temperatures would drop by as much as thirty degrees over twenty years, and the sun could die out within three hundred to four hundred years.”

Parents of captured U.S. soldier lead Washington motorcycle rally

Washington (CNN) — The parents of missing U.S. serviceman Bowe Bergdahl led the Rolling Thunder ride in Washington on Sunday, trailed by the roar of what was estimated to be hundreds of thousands of motorcycles.

The annual Memorial Day weekend ride, now in its 25th year, is held in remembrance of prisoners of war and those missing in action. […]

Flanked by riders wanting to offer support for the safe return of his son, Bergdahl spoke separately to CNN. He sported a long beard and wore a bandana imprinted with “POW.” His son’s official status is listed as “missing/captured.”

“The beard is a chronology,” Bergdahl said, “of my son’s captivity since June 30, 2009.” […]

How much energy does the sun produce?

September 5, 2005

Q: How much energy does the sun produce and where does it all come from and what makes it so stable?
CS, Newton

A: The sun is an average star. It is composed of a large spinning sphere of very hot gas and plasma. The sun has no surface in the conventional sense. It just gets more and more dense as you move in. By our standards, the sun is huge and that is what gives it its great stability. However, it is not as stable as you might think.

The sun radiates uniformly in all directions, mainly visible light and infrared radiation, and we can calculate the total amount of energy radiated by measuring the quantity of solar energy/second reaching every square meter of Earth and then multiplying that by the total surface area of a sphere with radius equal to the radius of Earth orbit. We get the astonishingly huge amount of 400 trillion trillion watts. To put this into a crazy context, every second the sun produces the same energy as about a trillion 1 megaton bombs! In one second, our sun produces enough energy for almost 500,000 years of the current needs of our so-called civilization. If only we could collect it all and use it!

Are you saying it will happen in the Catholic church?

Eventually? Yes. However, I am taking a longer view. My guess is that my grandchildren will be adults before they catch up to where the Episcopalians are now in terms of the priesthood. It may happen sooner though and may well be hammered through as a part of the reforms resulting from the multiplicity of abuses. I know some don’t think they’re doing enough or moving fast enough but I do think he wants to seriously change the direction of the Roman branch of the church and is pushing as hard as he can.

No, Francis is not perfect but he’s seen much more of the world than many of the old men in the Vatican & that legacy of Ignatius of Loyola is making a big difference.

Fast service and we were in and out in less than an hour (it’s not far).

Huge portions, not like I remember some years ago. I had a black bean burger w/sweet potato fries, both were really good, and there was no way I could eat it all. The burger was really big. Then I felt guilty for wasting food. But my grandson wanted to eat out somewhere different, so we did. OTOH, if we went out like this all the time, we’d be broke in no time at all. : )

So yeah, expect the next week to be filled with Republicans bitching that the President let a bunch of terrorists go and now they’re gonna start grabbing up soldiers to take hostage for more prisoner exchanges. Apparently this is something new to the field of war.

It’s not and, frankly, the kind of people that are doing it didn’t and don’t give a shit about Bergdahl, only about what kind of political hay they can make with him.

I wonder if our society has been so stuck in the war-mindset that we’ve forgotten what the back-end of a war looks like.

After Vietnam there was a protracted awkwardness of trying to wind down the mess. There are still people quite upset about the MIAs. The MIAs really are a sad story and mourning is appropriate, but we can’t mourn forever.

This is what the religious warriors won’t acknowledge - that we, the USA, really are not going to conduct an open ended war for the next 1000 years against Islam. Obama is not going to play into the religious-war meme that the coalition of the religious right and the paleo-right and neocons have built.

Gitmo needs to wind down, and this is one way to do it.

I don’t mind the GOP trying to make this an election issue because I really believe the general public isn’t in as much of a war mood as the war-coalition wants.

It’s more that we’ve isolated war from most people’s daily lives. It doesn’t affect most people, at all. We’ve also divorced the enormous costs of it from reality. A lot of people honestly don’t connect that the money spent on war could have been spent on, say, infrastructure. It’s like it’s in different areas of reality.

This kind of situation, along with a whole lot of others, is precisely why we need a properly funded, staffed and administered VA system. Our standard healthcare system can’t do this stuff, medical professionals are not trained to deal with stuff like POWs, PTSD from the battlefield, chemical exposures (Agent Orange, depleted urainium, etc), the self medicating/ addiction from PTSD and pain, battlefield wound recovery, etc. VA hospitals have staff who have the training. Unless of course everyone wants to pay money so every hospital can have a special Veteran’s Unit. Yeah right.

I’m so sick of this crap. The exact same assholes that told me I was a traitorous left wing commie who hated America for bringing up these costs of war BEFORE we even went into Afghanistan are the same ones pissing themselves in rage over Obama hating the veterans because he’s not taking care of them.

I hear you: even in the comment section to the Bergdahl piece in the New York Times, which (oddly given how many people read the damn thing) is normally a low-wingnut zone, about one out of three commenters used their pixels to spout nasty crap about President Obama. Not even so much his actions, just generic Obama-derangement gibbering, and what a shame it was that we had to “negotiate with terrorists”. Presumably the notion that we might have tried, at some point in the nearly five years of Sgt. Bergdahl’s captivity, to actually find and free him without “negotiating” seems to be too complex an idea for some people to grasp. And unfortunately, they all seem to have Internet access…

How binding are the release forms people sign with the climbing companies? I mean, IF something really really bad happened, do the survivors of (God forbid they die) families have any legal recourse??

No earthly idea. I never climbed, our job at the DustOff unit was to fly out and pick up the injured. I would image that like any release form it would make it more difficult to sue, but I would also imagine that if a company were negligent, or let unqualified climbers go on a route they weren’t capable of they would probably still be liable.

In this case, it looks like there may have been an avalanche (more details at Seattle Online), in which case you are probably pretty well screwed.

Perhaps LawHawk or one of our other legal eagles can help illuminate this for us?

No, not my words. You’re getting me mixed up with another lizard. I didn’t say anything about him thinking something was “bad” or “illegal”. That was someone else above.

As many have already commented, his posts often lack coherence. So it’s an extremely inexact science, maybe even a dead end, to try and tell us what he really meant. That can only be his job, since no one else lives inside that brain, presumably.

“Today, we are ecstatic!” the couple said. “We were so joyful and relieved when President Obama called us today to give us the news that Bowe is finally coming home! We cannot wait to wrap our arms around our only son,” the parents said.

“His mother was crying when she answered the phone — and just very excited,” said, Sherry Horton, a friend and former roommate of Bergdahl.

After the couple’s brief remarks, they thanked Obama, and Jani Bergdahl and Obama exchanged a hug and a kiss.

I suspect Congress is actually grateful for that, or at least its sane members are. Imagine Rand Paul’s reaction if Mitch McConnell had known about the swap in advance, to say nothing of that of the Tea Party. McConnell would have had to either leak the information (thus sabotaging the deal and seriously ticking off moderates and veterans) or keep quiet and be accused of being a RINO for “failing to stop Obama”.

So I’m glad that Congress didn’t know, Killgore.

Interesting

The Rolling Stone article, to be published Friday, also quotes other soldiers and associates of Bergdahl’s as saying that he had talked about walking to Pakistan if his deployment was “lame” and that shortly before his disappearance he had asked whether he should take his weapon if he left the base. Friends and other soldiers describe a survivalist mentality, and Bergdahl’s father, Bob, told the magazine that his son was “living in a novel.”

“The future is too good to waste on lies,” one email reads. “And life is way too short to care for the damnation of others, as well as to spend it helping fools with their ideas that are wrong.”

The emails were provided to the magazine by Bergdahl’s family in Idaho, which has gone public with its own discontent with U.S. efforts to free their son. There is no way to authenticate the emails.

I seem to recall some of this stuff was rumored at the time of his abduction.

The only change I’d suggest is… instead of contrasting his shop to “the corporations”, it should be “the big chains” or “a franchise operation”. You’re dealing with the boss, who does it himself to make sure it’s done right, it’s his name on the door.

GOP plant sneaks into Dem Mary Burke fundraiser

The detection of a GOP plant at a private fundraiser for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mary Burke Thursday touched off mutual recriminations about the increasingly common practice of political groups spying on one another.

An intern for the state GOP entered a low-dollar fundraiser for Burke at the home of Waukesha County Supervisor and former Waukesha mayor Larry Nelson. The intern put on a Burke button and presented herself as a supporter of the former state Commerce secretary, Burke spokesman Joe Zepecki said.

But when the intern sought to ask Burke a question and take video of the answer, Burke staffers checked out the intern’s name online and discovered the woman’s now shutdown Twitter account.

“My internship is requiring me to go to an event as an uncover Democrat today, so I’ve basically reached 007 status,” the intern had tweeted earlier in the day in a post preserved by Democrats.

Well, I’ll totally admit I was an ass about that Rachael Ray advertisement. Yup, an ass. I regret getting pulled into that.

There’s one little germ of a point there, though - a lot of people at that time were trying to argue that the kaffiyeh wasn’t a symbol of Palestinian “resistance,” and in my typical bulldog way I dug in and refused to admit that, because it really isn’t true. The symbolism is what it is, and I never like it when people try to deny reality.

Sen. Risch shares newly declassified Bergdahl intelligence

On Saturday evening, Risch told KTVB some information was declassified about how he was involved in Bergdahl’s situation. He says the government had good intelligence about the general area Bergdahl was held, and his committee would review drone strikes to make sure Bergdahl wasn’t hit.

“The agencies or departments that took the drone strikes knew that if they hit a target that was in the general area they were holding him, they were going to get a call, they were going to get a visit from me and my staff. We were going to look at the film, and we were going to cross-examine them as to exactly what information they had that they knew when they pulled the trigger that Bowe Bergdahl was not going to be a casualty or injured or killed in a drone strike.”

They knew enough about his location to direct drone strikes around him

You’re welcome, btw

Section 1035 of this Act gives the Administration additional flexibility to transfer detainees abroad by easing rigid restrictions that have hindered negotiations with foreign countries and interfered with executive branch determinations about how and where to transfer detainees.

whitehouse.gov

A signing statement can’t override a law. It can only “clarify” it. I don’t see anyone taking this one to court, however.

(a)

Authority to transfer under certain circumstances

The Secretary of Defense is authorized to transfer or release any individual detained at Guantanamo to the individual’s country of origin, or any other foreign country, if—
(1)

the Secretary determines, following a review conducted in accordance with the requirements of section 1023 of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012 (10 U.S.C. 801 note) and Executive Order No. 13567, that the individual is no longer a threat to the national security of the United States; or
(2)

such transfer or release outside the United States is to effectuate an order affecting disposition of the individual by a court or competent tribunal of the United States having jurisdiction.
(b)

Determination required prior to transfer

Except as provided in subsection (a), the Secretary of Defense may transfer an individual detained at Guantanamo to the custody or control of the individual’s country origin, or any other foreign country, only if the Secretary determines that—
(1)

actions that have been or are planned to be taken will substantially mitigate the risk of such individual engaging or reengaging in any terrorist or other hostile activity that threatens the United States or United States persons or interests; and
(2)

the transfer is in the national security interest of the United States.
(c)

Factors to be considered in making determination

In making the determination specified in subsection (b), the Secretary of Defense shall specifically evaluate and take into consideration the following factors:
(1)

The recommendations of the Guantanamo Detainee Review Task Force established pursuant to Executive Order No. 13492 and the recommendations of the Periodic Review Boards established pursuant to No. Executive Order 13567, as applicable.
(2)

The security situation in the foreign country to which the individual is to be transferred, including whether or not the country is a state sponsor of terrorism, the presence of foreign terrorist groups, and the threat posed by such groups to the United States.
(3)

Any confirmed case in which an individual transferred to the foreign country to which the individual is to be transferred subsequently engaged in terrorist or other hostile activity that threatened the United States or United States persons or interests.
(4)

Any actions taken by the United States or the foreign country to which the individual is to be transferred, or change in circumstances in such country, that reduce the risk of reengagement of the type described in paragraph (3).
(5)

Any assurances provided by the government of the foreign country to which the individual is to be transferred, including that—
(A)

such government maintains control over any facility at which the individual is to be detained if the individual is to be housed in a government-controlled facility; and
(B)

such government has taken or agreed to take actions to substantially mitigate the risk of the individual engaging or reengaging in any terrorist or other hostile activity that threatens the United States or United States persons or interests.
(6)

An assessment of the capacity, willingness, and past practices (if applicable) of the foreign country described in paragraph (5) in meeting any assurances it has provided, including assurances under paragraph (5) regarding its capacity and willingness to mitigate the risk of reengagement.
(7)

Any record of cooperation by the individual to be transferred with United States intelligence and law enforcement authorities, pursuant to a pre-trial agreement, while in the custody of or under the effective control of the Department of Defense, and any agreements and effective mechanisms that may be in place, to the extent relevant and necessary, to provide continued cooperation with United States intelligence and law enforcement authorities.
(8)

In the case of an individual who has been tried in a court or competent tribunal of the United States having jurisdiction on charges based on the same conduct that serves as a basis for the determination that the individual is an enemy combatant, whether or not the individual has been acquitted of such charges or has been convicted and has completed serving the sentence pursuant to the conviction.
(d)

Notification

The Secretary of Defense shall notify the appropriate committees of Congress of a determination of the Secretary under subsection (a) or (b) not later than 30 days before the transfer or release of the individual under such subsection. Each notification shall include, at a minimum, the following:

(2)

An explanation of why the transfer or release is in the national security interests of the United States.
(3)

(4)

I honestly don’t see what is wrong with this. It’s a public event, right? She paid her ticket price? Maybe candidates shouldn’t say things they would be embarrassed about being made public.

Quite Concur. A Democrat supporter did that at a Mitt Romney fundraiser in 2012, which is how Romney’s infamous “47%” remarks were brought to light. This was the same sort of thing, being sneaky but not dirty.

I also saw mention of “executive privilege” as a way to override the 30 day notification

Quite Concur. A Democrat supporter did that at a Mitt Romney fundraiser in 2012, which is how Romney’s infamous “47%” remarks were brought to light. This was the same sort of thing, being sneaky but not dirty.

Romney’s comments were recorded by a bartender:

Prouty said he and other staff members brought cameras to the May 17 dinner, thinking Romney might take pictures with the staff afterward. He claimed to have had no anti-Romney agenda going into the dinner but was startled by the candidate’s comments as the evening progressed.

The turning point came when Romney spoke of his former private equity group buying a factory in China, which employed young women who lived on-site under rough conditions.

Prouty revealed that after the dinner, he spent two weeks deciding if he should release the video. He lost sleep and feared he might lose his livelihood if he went public. One night he walked into his bathroom, looked at himself in the mirror and the words “you coward” came out of his mouth.

That’s when he decided he wanted to go public with the footage. He reached out to journalist David Corn, who wrote a Mother Jones article claiming Romney had invested in a Chinese firm that outsourced U.S. jobs. In a stroke of Democratic kismet, Prouty reached Corn though President Jimmy Carter’s grandson, James Carter, who worked as Corn’s research assistant. Corn helped Prouty get the video clips out and the undercover videographer also posted them on liberal blogs.

You can argue that Prouty’s recording was of a private affair and thus illegal under state wiretap law, but he didn’t go into the event under a false identity or with a political agenda. He was just an ordinary service worker who witnessed something he found genuinely objectionable.

I’m of the opinion that a public official, unless they are discussing something involving state secrets, should consider all of their meetings as open to the public.

re: #436 Killgore Trout

I’m flattered (and a little creeped out) that people find me so interesting they’re reading stuff I wrote 7 years ago looking for something to be outraged about. Knock yourself out.

Welp, since you seem to be pointedly ignoring my request for clarification in the thread upstairs, I decided to come back here (so as not to further disrupt the referenced thread) and remind you of something you said last month just in case the comment above was directed at me.

You can search the LGF archives for my previous positions on Darfur and Rawanda, Somalia, Ethiopia, Mali etc. Knock yourself out

littlegreenfootballs.com

So you yourself urged me to search the archives. I didn’t bother at the time because it didn’t strike me as something that would be especially interesting. Additionally, I’ve been here for 4+ years reading your comments and am pretty familiar with the stands you take. That said, as I already pointed out in my #409, last week Charles suddenly got in a Twitter argument with someone, during the course of which an old article was thrown at him (as evidence of what I’m still not sure).

As I’ve noted numerous times before, I try to stay away from the older articles because the anti-Muslim bile in many of them is something I can happily live without, BUT this one was exactly the sort of thing you constantly rail about nowadays. So I searched the comments for your handle. Nada.

Somewhat surprised (based on your claims and current behavior), at the bottom of that article was a link to a follow-up piece written two days later, so I clicked that one as well thinking that surely I’d find you saying something about free speech or boycotts there. Nope, no such luck.

It’s really weird that you urge people to search the archives for your old posts, then when they stumble upon some by way of someone else’s efforts and bring them to your attention, you’re suddenly “creeped out” and try to frame it as being due to some sort of unhealthy, stalker-like interest in you.

Oh, and I wasn’t “outraged” by the absence of your commentary on the things you claim are (and have always been) important to you—unless you don’t really understand what outraged means—I was simply calmly pointing out your… lack of consistency.
