Exclusive - Shift by hard-line Taliban factions may have sealed prisoner exchange

Mistrust between Washington and the insurgents had blocked progress, U.S. officials said. So did the deep-seated fears of Afghan President Hamid Karzai that a deal between the Americans and the Taliban would undercut him and his fragile government.
….

The question now, two U.S. officials say, is whether the prisoner swap could lead to broader peace talks between the Taliban and the Afghan government for a negotiated end to the Afghan conflict.

The officials expressed hope that it might.

“We do hope that having succeeded in this narrow but important step, it will create the possibility of expanding the dialogue to other issues. But we don’t have any promises to that effect,” said one senior U.S. official deeply involved in the diplomacy.

There are indications that the Taliban will be more willing to engage in peace talks with the Afghan government once Karzai leaves office, the officials said.

But given the tortured diplomatic path needed to release five Afghans and an American, those talks are likely to be difficult.

Taliban says ‘five senior leaders’ have been ‘liberated’ from Guantanamo

The Taliban also argues that it got a good deal in the prisoner exchange. “It is worth mentioning that the Islamic Emirate, in exchange for the release of its five prominent people,…released one America soldier that it had captured five years ago and handed him over to America,” the Taliban says, according to SITE’s translation.

I can get that. I didn’t burst into tears when I saw Urban’s first appearance, but I felt like I was watching a reincarnation of DeForest Kelley. Urban has done the best job in channeling the original character of the lot, although the others are not bad at all.

God certainly does seem to like punking Republicans, though this one finally learned and switch from the GOP to the Constitution party:

Newman follows God’s instructions into the gubernatorial fray once more

Robert Newman says he was told to run for governor by the one voice he can’t ignore.

“I was praying while taking care of the pigs,” the 70-year-old retired clinical psychologist said.

He farms on the rural property he and his wife have lived on, out on the outskirts of Redlands, just over the line into Riverside County, for 27 years.

“I said ‘Lord, I didn’t get an advanced education to take care of pigs. So what do I do with the rest of my life?’” he said.

Newman, a devout Christian, prays regularly and enthusiastically.

“The response was clear: ‘Be the governor.’”

It wasn’t a welcome instruction.

[…]

But Newman has taken God’s instructions to heart, running for governor in 2003, 2006 as a write-in candidate, 2010 and now in 2014, studying the Bible to prepare for each of his runs, especially seldom-discussed sections of the Bible discussing good governance and leadership.

His past losses don’t deter him:

“The beauty of this is that I’m not a novice at this,” Newman said. “But this is a God call. I could have gone to the Bahamas a number of times, I could have bought a John Deere (tractor)” with the money he’s spent on his efforts, instead of running for office.

[…]

Although he previously ran as a Republican, he split with them after California Republican leaders said they wanted to distance themselves from social issues, and focus on raising money for “viable” candidates who could turn the party’s fortunes around in the state.

Newman is “emphatically pro-life” and said increasingly common legalization of gay marriage is leading society down a slippery slope.

“Once we say two males can marry or two females can marry, why not three people?”

This year, Newman has been endorsed by the Constitution Party of California, although he says he and the party disagree on how to deal with California’s population of immigrants […]

Yet, some remain in the GOP who are asking to be punked yet again:

Herman Cain says he might run for president again

Herman Cain, who ended his 2012 presidential campaign amid allegations of multiple affairs, said Saturday that he might run for president again in 2016.

Cain, in a speech at the Republican Leadership Conference here, brought up the prospect of another run toward the end of his speech. He then suggested he would do it if he were called by God.

“I do not know what the future holds, but I know who holds the future,” the Georgia businessman said. “And I trust in God.”

I find it amusing that a clinical psychologist hears a voice in his head that tells him to run for governor, not once, but four times, and doesn’t stop to wonder whether his own mind is playing tricks on him.

Then, there’s the question of why God would tell you to do something on three previous occasions, and each time let you fail. Why is the fourth time going to be any different?

God at least let Jonah win, once he sprung Jonah out of his fishy prison cell.

“Ekho Moskvy” (“The Echo of Moscow”) is special in that it is owned by the state (through Gazprom), and yet has a decidedly liberal take on things most of the time. It is certainly hated by the national-patriots, who have nicknamed it “Ekho matsy” (“The Echo of Matzo”). So if Snowden does take part in this, it will certainly be interesting whether he will be willing to give out his award to a journalist from the opposition, and if so, what the subsequent reactions might be.

We live in a crazy world:

Video: Shocking moment mother is murdered in McDonalds by religious cult trying to recruit her

Wu Ting was set upon by the gang at a McDonald’s restaurant when she refused to give them her telephone number

[…]

Wu Ting, 23, is believed to have refused to give her telephone number to members of the All-Powerful Spirit cult moments before she was smashed round the head with a mop.

People watch on helplessly as the attack continues with the young woman lying on the ground as the man who appears to be attacking her is egged on by fellow members of the cult.

Nobody stepped in to help the woman, instead standing around before leaving the McDonald’s before standing outside and watching through the window.

[…]

In the video a woman can be heard shouting “beat her to death” while someone else says “call the police”.

[…]

After the arrest police also recovered pamphlets that the group had been distributing about their religion. The McDonald’s is located across the street from a local police station.

[…]

The All Powerful Spirit cult was founded in the northeastern province of Heilongjiang in the early 1990s and later spread to the country’s eastern provinces. The cults philosophy is based on a distorted reading of the Christian Bible and it was banned under the country’s corporals in 1995.

Seventeen of its members had been arrested in Beijing in December 2012 for harassing people in a public park and claiming the world was coming to an end.

Here’s some info about that particular doomsday cult.

en.wikipedia.org

They’re really out there. Here’s a little more:

Zhao Wei Shan was formerly a member of The Shouters, another cult offshoot of Christianity that was founded in the 1960s (and banned by the Chinese government in 1983). He broke away from them, starting a new group called the “Church of the Everlasting Foundation.” At some point, he met a woman from the central Henan province called Deng. He eventually came to believe that Deng was actually Christ returning as a woman. Calling her The Almighty God, Zhao and Deng formed The Church of the True God, which later became the Eastern Lightning (and Deng was now referred to as Lightning Deng). (They seem to change their names so much you’d think something shady was going on.)

Eastern Lightning considers Deng the third incarnation of God, the first being Jehova (Old Testament) and the second Jesus (New Testament). They have a book called Lightning from the Orient, which further explains the female Christ’s purpose, which includes defeating the Devil. They use extreme methods to get converts, including kidnapping, torturing, and brainwashing.

Is Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl a hero or a deserter?

cbsnews.com

“A transcript of radio intercepts, publicly released through Wikileaks, indicates that Bergdahl, then 23, was captured while sitting in a makeshift latrine.

“We were attacking the post he was sitting,” according to a radio intercept of a conversation among insurgents. “He had no gun with him. … They have all (the) Americans, ANA (Afghan National Army), helicopters, the planes are looking for him. Can you guys make a video of him and announce it all over Afghanistan that we have one of the Americans?”

“Rolling Stone magazine quoted emails Bergdahl is said to have sent to his parents that suggest he was disillusioned with America’s mission in Afghanistan, had lost faith in the U.S. Army’s mission there and was considering desertion.” More

man with suspected ties to Islamic radicals in Syria has been arrested by French police in connection with the terrorist attack at the Jewish Museum of Belgium in Brussels on 24 May in which four people were killed.

The French suspect, 29-year-old Mehdi Nemmouche, a native of Roubaix in northern France, was arrested in the southern French city of Marseille in possession of a Kalashnikov rifle and a handgun similar to the ones used in the museum attack.

re: #69 Amory Blaine

Mike Gousha from WISN will be pitching softballs to Gov. Walker this morning on his show. No doubt to provide cover so Walker can get in front of the WSJ thing before Monday.

The Journal is irritated that Walker isn’t going to fight things out after the favorable court decision earlier this month. It’s editorial board wants Walker to gain a full vindication for Americans For Prosperity (AFP).

Gov. Walker, for his part, sees (correctly in my eyes) the continuing discussion of the John Doe investigation as a distraction / minor scandal that can only hurt him as his reelection campaign goes forward. Thus he wants to settle the case, pay a fine if he has to and move on. He sees the court decision as giving his legal team crucial leverage with which to cut a deal, which it likely is. Prosecutors, like most trial lawyers, tend to prefer a settlement to a gallant defeat.

Most likely, the John Doe investigation will involve the Walker campaign and AFP paying moderate fines and agreeing to some disclosure and/or non-coordination rules going forward. Partisans on both sides will not like this, but it is important to remember that settlement is the normal result for legal proceedings in this country. Hollywood aside, neither side usually wants to fight things through to their conclusion.

Cook’s Country (aka Cook’s Illustrated) only suggests using egg. :(
This is there answer to a reader:
Pie recipes call for egg washes of all sorts. Does it matter what I brush my pie crust with?

Bakers brush double-crust pies with egg wash to improve browning and lend a shiny finish. As you’ve noticed, different recipes call for different formulations. We made a list of the typical methods and put them all to the test. We started by making three double-crust pies and brushing the top crust of one with a beaten egg, one with a beaten egg white, and one with beaten yolk. The crust brushed with egg white was still dull and pale when the pie was done. Yolk alone made the crust very shiny, but by the time the pie was fully cooked, it was too dark. Moreover, the yolk was too thick to spread evenly, leaving deep brush marks and bald spots. A whole egg spread evenly and browned well but lacked the shine of the yolk-brushed crust. Some recipes call for thinning egg wash with water, milk, or cream. We tried each of these in combination with yolks, whites, and whole eggs. None produced the glossy crust we were looking for, although both milk and cream sped browning. In the end, we found that brushing the crust with a whole egg plus one yolk gave us both a glossy finish and perfect browning.

THE BOTTOM LINE Brushing pie crust with a whole egg and one yolk, lightly beaten, yields a shiny finish and moderate browning speed.

Don’t be very sure of that. But there is a decent chance it will be and that’s a factor motivating the Walker campaign to settle. Scott Walker does not want the ruling overturned in the fall, which would inflict a ‘late hit’ which might be hard to recover from. Better to settle and not run the risk.

Soldiers throughout history have bitched and complained so that’s not new but it does sound like his unit was dysfunctional and it’s entirely possible his own actions led to his capture. I’m not sure what disciplinary action from the military he might be in for, his capture and release used up a lot of valuable resources but I think he’s been through enough already.

It’s one thing to be ashamed of your country, another to be ashamed of what it does in your name, and the actions of those who represent this country.

RWers do the former and some people do the latter.

I’ve disagreed, and even been disgusted, with many things I saw reported in Iraq and Afghanistan, even done by ordinary soldiers and their commanders, but I’ve never been ashamed of the country as a whole.

7 Die in Cambodia After Looking for Money in Well

Seven people died from a lack of oxygen after climbing down a well in Cambodia to retrieve about 75 cents, police and relatives said Sunday.

The incident happened late Saturday in a remote area of the northwestern province of Siem Reap when an 11-year-old boy and six other people went into the well to collect 3,000 riel (75 cents). The boy’s older sister, Che Chhan, said their father had accidentally dropped the money when taking water.

She said her 13-year-old sister and 15-year-old brother also died, as well as four of her neighbors.

“My youngest brother thought the amount of money was huge for poor people like us,” Che Chhan said by phone.

It also has other numbers that are good news for the governor: His favorable/unfavorable numbers are noticablely better and 52% of those polled say Wisconsin is on the ‘right track’ versus 42 who say its on the ‘wrong track’.

Moreover, 32% of that new poll identified as Dems, as opposed to 27% in the previous poll Marquette ran. I don’t think the Wisconsin electorate moved 5% in party identification, so the question is: Which poll sampled Democrats incorrectly?

“Cancer survivors now number more than 14.5 million in the United States and are expected to grow to 19 million over the next decade, a new report finds. More cancers are cured, more people are living longer with the disease and people are living longer in general, which boosts the number of cases and survivors because the risk of developing cancer rises with age.

Neither of them sampled incorrectly. You expect differences in identification between polls. If they were always the same, then that’d show a problem with sampling.

Recipe i found in Hebrew for a vegan Challah a while back mentions the following for substituting eggs..

Ingredients:
1/4 cup white sugar
3 spoons water
1 spoon olive oil
A dash of salt
1 spoon cornflower
Optional - some sesame

The “Egg” for the brushing is prepared as follows:
Microwave the sugar and water in a small bowl for about 2 minutes until the sugar melts. Add the olive oil, salt and cornflower and stir for a few minutes until the cornflower is absorbed and the mix has a yellowish color (kinda like a real egg). Optional: add sesame to the mix if desired

I was just about to say that. There is never a uniform voter breakdown between polls, the electorate does not stay static from day to day. Hell, if you’d polled me 5 years ago, I’d have told you I was a die-hard Republican. Today, I’d sooner be shot dead than vote Republican again.

A singular poll, or even a pair of polls, will never show you the whole picture. You gotta go by the trend, weighing as many polls in a given period of time as possible and accounting for variables like turnout. In this particular case, Walker’s numbers have been trending downward for awhile now, so arguing that one poll showing a dead heat race is questionable based upon voter breakdown seems to missing the forest for the trees.

Actually, the new poll has his favorable numbers up from the previous poll. The other thing to say is that the challenger often gets a boost after winning the primary due to the media attention that brings and due to more people ‘tuning in’ to the election.

Walker’s favorable may be up, but the man’s been alternating between a dead-heat and a small lead for weeks now. Even RCP’s calling it a toss-up. And the first time Rasmussen weighed in on the race was in March, and that poll showed a dead-heat. Perhaps it’s because, this time around, Scotty can’t question the need for an election or blame it on the unions.

We actually prefer turkey chili to beef, but I don’t use ground turkey. I buy turkey thighs, take the skin off, boil them till cooked through then chop up the meat to bite size chunks

I usually buy a huge package of thighs and/or legs and cook them on the grill. After a few days of BBQ turkey I pull the meat off the bone and make Chilli with the leftovers. Adds a great smokey flavor to the chilli.

you can safely ignore most of the partisan noise. The same people who hate Reagan for his deal are praising Obama’s move. If the positions were reversed here it would just be different people making the same complaint. Was it a good move or not? Over the past decades, abortion providers live with increasing risk: One in five clinics annually are the targets of repeated violence. Since the early 1990s, nine doctors and clinic workers have been murdered in attacks by anti-abortion extremists, and 30 others wounded, including law enforcement officers responding to the incidents.

Each time, the killers, or attempted killers, (like Rachelle “Shelley” Shannon, who shot Tiller in both arms in 1993,) would be characterized as lone nuts. But in truth, they are often involved with extremist anti-abortion organizations that track the whereabouts of abortion doctors and deliver white-hot rhetoric that paints someone like George Tiller as a murderer rather than a healer. Anti-abortion extremists have even promoted the assassinations of abortion providers as “justifiable homicides.” So these “lone nuts,” heeding the call to violence, are as good as licensed to kill.

I don’t think the NSA wants photos of people’s vaginas and penises, either, unless they’re on some wanted criminal’s pages along w/his or her photo.

People put all kinds of shit out there on the internet, and then they complain because the NSA is using facial recognition to catch criminals?

Good mid-day everyone!

A great example of people putting themselves all over the ‘net was my recognizing the tall thin dude in the fedora with the guns in a store in a couple of images linked here both in tweets. So, identifying him as part of Open Carry Texas led me to doing a Google image search of Open Carry Texas. Surprise…who showed up? Kory Watkins, the thin dude in the fedora. Links from the images took me to his blog and other sites with others in his group.

Is Kory going to bitch and cry about that nasty NSA or any other government agency having his image? I didn’t have any motive to dig him up except to do a photoshop of him in his fedora reminiscent of an old Devo album. Actually I learned way too much about him. Who’s fault was that?

But what about the ATF? I’m betting they know Kory too. And Kory did that to himself. If Kory and his group screw up and something bad comes out of one of his protests/demonstrations, how long will it take before Kory is picked up and questioned?

But should that happen, there will no doubt be someone saying it was unfair that Kory was being watched by the Feds. Really? Seems to me the Feds wouldn’t have to do much more than a Google search. Who needs a sophisticated spy program to scan communications. I didn’t. I didn’t even need his name, that was attached to the images. I was just looking for the tall thin dude in a fedora open carrying a gun.

See “Maverick” McCain and Huckleberry Closetcase up upon their soapboxes, demanding the White House invade Pakistan just to secure the release of a single POW. The news of the prisoner exchange — in which Sgt. Bergdahl was swapped for Afghan detainees being held at Guantanamo Bay — surprised many Republicans because, they claim, it violated a law Obama signed last year requiring the defense secretary to notify congressional committees 30 days before arranging for a transfer of prisoners.

That sounds totally efficient and completely arbitrary. Much like the entirety of government according to the GOP.

The law itself actually has nothing to do with prisoner exchanges and everything to do with Republicans wanting to prevent the White House from closing Gitmo.

Now I almost wish the President had put the issue before Congress. Nothing like a month long of Republicans railing that the best thing this nation could do is leave a POW to rot in enemy custody for the rest of his life. See “Maverick” McCain and Huckleberry Closetcase up upon their soapboxes, demanding the White House invade Pakistan just to secure the release of a single POW. And hearing the Republican candidates from sea to sea declaring that, if elected to Congress, they’ll make sure the President doesn’t bring POWs home unless its unconditionally.

See, Rs want a “strong President” who gets things done—until he’s Black.

[Embedded content]

I used to like to see Michael Steele as a GOP spokesman on some of the televised political shows. He seemed like he at least understood politics and wasn’t quite so quick to turn everything into us and them.

Lately I am thinking Michael was grabbed by the leadership and read the riot act for not following all the talking points to the letter. He seems to have changed his tone lately and is now just as much a parrot as the rest of them. I hope I am wrong…but I fear the GOP Body Snatchers got him.

Is there really a middle ground any more? You know the area where probably 70% of the American people reside with their thinking? The GOP doesn’t seem to think so and they don’t seem to want to find their way back there. I guess I no longer understand politics.

I think this is the actual quote:

Wind is God’s way of balancing heat. Wind is the way you shift heat from areas where it’s hotter to areas where it’s cooler. That’s what wind is. Wouldn’t it be ironic if in the interest of global warming we mandated massive switches to energy, which is a finite resource, which slows the winds down, which causes the temperature to go up? Now, I’m not saying that’s going to happen, Mr. Chairman, but that is definitely something on the massive scale. I mean, it does make some sense. You stop something, you can’t transfer that heat, and the heat goes up. It’s just something to think about.

In the Sharpe’s Rifles TV movies, Sean Bean plays the title character. It’s pretty hard to have more than one of those movies if you die a lot.

Has anyone compared Bean’s on-screen mortality to other character actors? Michael Ironside seems to die a lot in his appearances.

Or is it because Bean plays both heroes and villains, yet it never seems to affect the lifespan of his characters?

2012 GOP threat: Sgt. Bergdahl swap will be Obama, Democrats’ ‘Willie Horton moment’

…One possible reason the president chose not to notify lawmakers is that last time he attempted to negotiate Sgt. Bergdahl’s release, Republicans both formally and informally blocked all efforts to do so.

In addition to using congressional oversight, special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan Marc Grossman was told by Republican leadership that negotiating an exchange of Sgt. Bergdahl that involved detainees from Guantanamo Bay would be the president’s “Willie Horton moment,” a reference to the infamous “Revolving Door” advertisement that George H.W. Bush campaign used to make 1988 Democratic presidential nominee Michael Dukakis look “soft” on crime…

Just reading through the BBC story makes it clear that the five we’ve been holding would, if this were any other war, be non-issues. None of them seem to have been charged with crimes towards the US, and the crimes they are suspected of committing should be prosecuted by Afghanistan, as we have no jurisdiction in such matters.

The list of reasons for not clearing out Gitmo at this point mostly boil down to one thing: There’s no way to try most of these men in a court of law without the very real danger of the cases being thrown out either due to lack of admissible evidence or because under the rules of war we can’t try POWs for crimes against us while the war is ongoing, and we can’t guarantee that their home countries wouldn’t torture or execute them upon release. So we’re stuck with men we can’t legally try but also can’t release.

Of course, another thing to keep in mind is that, technically, we did not negotiate with terrorists. Despite what Republicans on Capital Hill will assert and wingnuts will froth over, the Taliban is not listed by the State Department as a terrorist organization. In fact, according to Wiki, there’s only one nation that still classifies the Taliban as a terrorist organization: Russia.

306 Gus  Jun 1, 2014 10:08:44am
…In the 1980s while at Langley, Avrakotos led Operation Cyclone, the largest covert operation in the CIA’s history. Through intermediaries, mostly Zia ul-Haq’s ISI in Pakistan, the CIA-armed Afghanistan’s Mujahideen during the Soviet war in Afghanistan. Avrakotos eventually met congressman Charlie Wilson of Texas’s 2nd congressional district. Together they collaborated to massively increase funding for the rebels, and together helped persuade officials from Egypt, Pakistan, China, Israel, Saudi Arabia, and elsewhere to increase support for the cause. Avrakotos also plucked Michael G. Vickers from obscurity in the CIA’s paramilitary group to revamp the strategy for the Mujahideen. Vickers urged them to drop the Enfield Rifle in favor of a mix of weapons like the AK-47, and to introduce new tactics, training, and logistics.[2]

Avrakotos’ position in the agency meant that he was also responsible for Iran. In 1985 he witnessed a group within the government, including Oliver North, Bud McFarlane, certain members of the National Security Council, and others attempting to run the Iran arms-for-hostages trade using the CIA. He told his superior Clair George that the Iran Contra trade was a disaster in the making, as he did not trust Manucher Ghorbanifar nor the Israelis pushing the scheme, and he viewed the people like North as the “lunatic fringe” who had earlier tried to bring bizarre ideas into the Afghan war. Avrakotos also warned George that the scheme was illegal and wrote a notable memo distributed within the CIA to that effect. According to author George Crile, the bureaucracy punished Avrakotos for his dissent and then banished him to a do-nothing job with little responsibility, just as his greatest success, the Afghan program, was showing results.[2][5] Avrakotos was re-assigned “just as the Stinger antiaircraft missile launchers downed the first Soviet gunships” and after a brief role in an African assignment, he retired from the CIA in 1989.[1] Gust’s predictions about Iran-Contra were accurate, as the Iran-Contra affair resulted in numerous prosecutions of government officials and years of congressional hearings and controversy…

We did not negotiate with terrorists, because legally we don’t consider them terrorists. We instead did what we always do at the end of a war: We negotiated the release of POWs we were holding in exchange for a POW the other side was holding. If the five were being held for crimes committed against the US, then they should have been tried for those crimes already in a court of law. If they were being held for crimes committed on the battlefield, then we cannot try them for those crimes under the Geneva Conventions. And if they are being held for crimes committed against the Afghan people, then the Afghan government has jurisdiction and must try them.

The CIA however will negotiate with anyone depending on the USG’s FP goals.

Marine Andrew Tahmooressi had just moved to California from Florida and had all his belongings in his vehicle, including the guns, when he missed the last U.S. exit on April 1, forcing him to cross the border. Road closures because of checkpoints and construction added to the confusion, and there was no opportunity for drivers to turn around,

From the sounds of it, if he did nothing wrong, then it won’t be that hard to prove as much to a judge and be released. After all, don’t we hear all the time from wingnuts how they really wish that we had laws like Mexico’s when it came to dealing with foreigners?

320 Gus  Jun 1, 2014 10:21:52am

US Marine arrested in Mexico for breaking Mexican law. Bring him back. He’s a hero and a patriot.

Mexican Marine arrested in USA for breaking US law. Fuck him. He broke the law and needs to face justice.

In the USA they’re detained. Charged. Then further detained for a year or more until a trial in which they are either found guilty or innocent. I’m sure it’s the same in Mexico. Mexico, like the USA, won’t release someone like this “because they sound innocent.”

Texas executing Mexican nationals from time to time doesn’t help.

Maybe if they throw in an affidavit from their mom saying that he was always such a “good boy” would do it!!
