You may be familiar with Brian Eno’s ambient music, but that is most definitely not what’s going on here. His project with Underworld singer Karl Hyde is much more pop-oriented; in a way it’s a return to “classic Eno,” but still slightly bent, in a good way. Also somewhat reminiscent of Eno’s album with David Byrne, with a very non-ambient primal groove. Great stuff.

Afternoon Lizards. Hey Charles, Been having issues with images embedded in twitter posts. When I download new comments, I only get about a third of the image. But if after downloading the post with the image, I refresh the page, I get the full image. Any Ideas?

OS is Windows 7. Browser is Firefox Build 29.0.1

House of Worship on Lombard Street

Extended walk today. Down to the edge of Society Hill, and then back on South Street from about 6th Street all the way to the Schyulkill River (about 20 blocks) before walking along the river and back home. Feet are tired.

I also stopped for a pint and a salad at the Fox and Hound. Plus sitting on a bench in a park along the river as well for a while.

None of the browsers out there make me terribly happy these days. Although Chrome is better at reliably recovering tabs after a crash than Firefox was.

I remember to this day hearing those strange sax tones of Roxy Music’s Bogus Man from For Your Pleasure and knew right away I had never heard music like this. One of my first days at art college too. How fitting. Many parties were to come.

Love Eno, Roxy, Bryan Ferry, all that to this day.

Good to see him putting stuff out. Dude has had a hell of a career in the music biz. And unique the whole way.

If you have 5 minutes…nothing better than some Eno with Robert Fripp doing the dirty fuzz-tone lead on “Baby’s On Fire” from “Here Come the Warm Jets.”

Was running Safari for Windows before I switched and would have stayed with it if Apple would have fixed it’s most notable bug of suddenly resetting for some strange reason. But Noooooooo, Apple just quit supporting it.

In all honesty, Apple is not the company that is ever going to give you longevity and continued support. When I buy an Apple product, it is done so knowing that I will likely only receive support for the duration of the warranty period and I should not expect software updates to work on the hardware past that date.

Went and saw X-Men: Days of Future Past this afternoon. Pretty good flix, a GREAT special effects scene with Quicksilver in it. All in all a good flick, and they did a nice job of setting up a reboot of the X-men franchise.

TMZ has learned TV legend Ann B. Davis who played Alice on ” The Brady Bunch ” has died.

According to the couple she lived with Ann fell in her bathroom early this morning and hit her head causing grave damage.

She apparently never regained consciousness. Her roommate says Davis had been pretty healthy for an 88-year old woman — and her death was a total shock.

THIS. My original iPad (1st gen) is just over 4 years old, but it might as well be a doorstop for all the use I get out of it. It can’t run the newer iOS or apps, so it mostly just sits on a shelf looking forlorn. It’ll probably make a decent softbox though. // half

If my boss hadn’t gotten me the new iPad Mini last year I prolly would’ve ended up with a Google Nexus. Much as I love my iPads, I can’t afford to burn $700-$800 every 2-3 years. The iPod Touch is a little less painful, but still…

I guess I’ve found just the opposite. My current old iMac has gone longer and been more supported than any PC I’ve owned, all the way back to the XT.

I admit to having a techie-toy addiction. The original iPad still works nicely for watching movies in the trailer, on the rare occasion we do that. The newer one (with Retina display - made reading PDF articles a lot easier) is still the more general use one.

The Nexus 7 suffers a little because my new Android phone is cooler and faster (with a better screen) but may get pulled out soon for more development work. It also has a stupid major battery draining bug that means that even without use it rarely lasts a full day. Still will be fine for doing development work at the desk for tablets.

I’ve got to toss a plug in for Crossbones (on Hulu). It’s Capt Edward Teach (Black Beard) as the leader of a pirate island. John Malkovich is great in the role, brings just the right amount of civility, menace, and then sociopathic rage to the part.

I really enjoyed it, added it to my list.

That’s odd. I get a TON of battery life out of my Nexus 7. I run “Juice Defender” on it, easily get 2-3 days on a charge, and that’s with about and hour a day of surfing via wi-fi. Maybe a full reset, and let it reload all the apps. I finally did that with my Razr Maxx phone, after about 2 years it was due.

Let me take a moment to rant about the continuing move by major web sites away from a full display page design and towards a smaller screen format designed for scrolling up and down.

Along with this move are more slender scroll bars, real tiny things. On a hand held device with small screens, scrolling is fine because the touch sensors are very course and just getting part of a finger on the scroll bar will work. But not so on a desktop.

It’s not just looking awkward on a larger screen, but I notice that these sites are having less information.

Take the LA Times for example. Simply going to the web page it’s no longer clear how I can find information about the company. And the LAT is not unique in this. There is less visibility of the “About Us” kind in more and more outlets these days.

Can you install the newest OS on it? Upgrade your software to the current versions? Note I am making a distinction here between the hardware being good quality and Apple providing support and backwards compatibility for new software.

As an example, Apple decided to - with no warning - deprecate a particular set of APIs that let you copy a file of say, a graph, and paste it in another program and then ungroup the elements. Small thing, sure, but actually pretty vital to the workflow used in my lab, to graph NMR data and move it into Powerpoint for comparisons/prep for publication, etc. We found out when someone upgraded. The rest of us had a pretty serious problem at that point. I maintained a laptop running an old version of the OS and an old version of Office to get around it.

Windows, on the other hand, never really deprecates anything. Results in a mess for software? Yes. But it means that problems like what I described above are much less of an issue.

Yeah, there is a bug on the Nexus 7 that has the cell connection where it essentially stops allowing the tablet from entering “deep sleep” with the (predictable) consequences on battery consumption.

If I got another one I’d just get the wifi version and be done with it.

Gah, don’t remind meeeee! IE6 took 13 freaking years to die. And actually that’s just support for IE6 on XP—it still gets one more year of support on Windows Server 2003 machines. I stopped coding for it a long time ago though.

The warranty is one year, three with Apple Care. OS X Mavericks on the other hand will install on a seven year old iMac. On top of that they generally post security updates for the three most recent OS versions, so machines running 10.7 and 10.8 are still receiving updates, pushing the support envelope back at least another two years.

That’s nine years worth of security update support for a system that is intrinsically more secure to begin with.

Yes, not going to do it though, since 10.6.8 is the last version of OSX that will support some of the old programs (no longer available) that I use.

This is not Apple’s fault. I want to use old software. I can upgrade to the latest OSX or not, it’s my choice.

In fact, if I really wanted to (and I don’t), I can still find ways to run years old Apple software.

Apple provided a way for old Apple OS programs to run under OSX when the big change came.

Then, in an even more impressive move, when Apple moved to i86 platforms from their own PPC processors, they provided a way to run old software on the new machines, quite a feat of interoperability that no other vendor of small machines I can recall ever has done.

I’m not an Apple fan boy, but I do think they have gone out of their way to be a premier systems integrator, and that includes helping people transition.

I’m not pro-Windows or pro-Apple. I run mostly Windows these days because that is what is convenient for me on my home network and (in the case of my desktop) I build my own machine. Apple won’t let me do that.

Apple has done a fair number of things that are good. They have done a fair number of things that are really shitty. I’m not claiming they’re either bad or good.

What I am saying is that their model is one of planned obsolescence. Like most tech companies, except that other companies do a much better job of providing backwards compatibility.

It’s been interesting to play with for me, recently. I shoot in color and then do all the processing off-camera, so I can do comparisons, which is nice.

I really liked the clouds that day. None of the shots really did them justice.

I have a huge collection of ACW books, including antiquarian editions. I could have bought a early edition of 12 Years A Slave from an antiquarian shop for $200 in 1992, but I bought the paperback reprint.

And using 10.6, I can still get the latest iTunes, various browsers, and so forth.

I don’t expect longer than a 7 year support window. As it is, 7 years is longer than many product support since the advent of the personal computer age.

I think B&W does texture better in general. You lose the distraction of the color (especially when the color tones are somewhat …uninteresting?) and can just focus on the lines.

True. Though I took the original picture due to the contrast between the grey stone and the blue sky. But most of the picture is gray stone - so the texture there is the dominant theme.

Actually, one word: legacy. There are/were a crapload of independent specialized programming companies that write software specifically for a company, meant to do a very particular task. To save programming time they’ll frequently use existing systems for something - in this example IE6 as the specifically cued display. Then because they’re using it in dedicated fashion they’ll hit all the special codes for speed and control and such.

A company that drops several thousand dollars for a program that does exactly what they want does not want to have to redo the program a couple of years later.

I know I keep hitting the M$ fanboy button. But this is another example of why M$ dominates most businesses. Most companies don’t need the newest and shiniest for operations.

Color is indeed a distraction, much as I love it. When creating a logo, any graphic designer worth his/her salt will start with b&w for exactly that reason. If a logo is “strong” in b&w it’ll be strong in color, but the opposite isn’t always true.

Clients that haven’t been though the process before don’t usually get it until we get past the b&w conceptual iterations and start showing color options. Because of the strong cultural/emotional impact color can have, that’s when the lightbulb comes on and they go, “Ohhhhhh, now I see!”

IE8 had the unfortunate distinction of being horribly broken according to pretty much all the standards from the day it came out. And yet, yours is the second company I’ve heard of that has standardized their operations on it - the first being my current client. After the application I’m currently developing broke down in a very unique fashion on IE8 only, I was able to convince them to review allowing alternate browsers for the users of this particular system.

Because I was the technology contact for the new lab equipment we got while I was in grad school, I got to have the fun of working out with the IT folks why this one needed to not have all the silly requirements installed including the Windows update done on schedule.

Nothing like having the middle of a 28 hour run interrupted by the computer shutting down for an update.

I think in this case one reason for the slow upgrades is that there has to be support for three languages; Portuguese, Spanish, and English. And the primary support/conversion work is done in Brazil. That we just completed a Sharepoint upgrade without everything crashing for an extended period of time was a bit of a miracle.

On getting computers, the way I recommend.

First, choose the software. Choose it on it doing what you want it to do when you want it to do it with the least amount of difficulty. Most (not all) either works on or can be made to work on any OS via emulators/virtual systems. It’s the few exceptions that make this the first step these days.

Second it’s prioritization.
‘Just works’ is Apple, M$, Linux.
‘More options after tuning’ is Linux, M$, Apple.
‘Support now’ is Apple, M$, Linux.
‘Support in three years’ is M$, Linux, Apple.
‘Works even when the hardware is ancient’ is Linux, M$, Apple.
‘Shares work with others’ is M$, Linux, Apple. Or maybe M$, Apple, Linux.

Note that in none of those cases is the last choice “none”. It just means

If you do not want to be a techie, but just use the darn thing, and you are willing to replace it with a newer version every couple of years, go Apple.

If you’re working with large networks, sharing work - enterprise work, in other words - and don’t mind doing occasional tech work, and expect to be using the system for more than a couple of years - go M$.

If you are, or want to be, a techie and tweak everything to make it work the way you really want, go Linux.

I agree about the bunny. The texture of its fur & the grass is too similar, and there’s not enough contrast between them. If it had been in the snow, it might’ve been great in b&w.

These day’s I have a cheap 2nd hand chromebook (one of the ones with a real disk drive) with a hacked up version of Xubuntu running on it. Depends on how you do the B/W conversion. Here again is my good quick and dirty method, with control.

Create two Hue/Adjustment layers.
Take the Saturation slider to zero on the top layer.
Make the bottom Adjustment layer “Color” mode.
Play with the Hue slider on the bottom adjustment layer until the image looks good.

I also made an oval selection around the bunny, feathered, and tweaked the levels. Then inverted the selection and tweaked again. Another oval selection in the upper right hand corner, feathered, and dodged out the too dark area there.

Now the bunny pops out.

This method basically duplicates the use of color filters on b/w film, except you don’t have to do it in camera and don’t have to worry about remembering the filter factor.

Just finished the Cosmos episode on AGW. Not only does NDT explain the difference between weather and climate, but he dismantles the IT’S ALL TEH VOLCANOES FAULT! line and points out why the polar ice caps melting is a bad thing. There is also a big push for solar, wind, and alternate energy over fossil fuels.

I can’t wait to see the ‘splodey heads.

After having been inescapably exposed to Fox News earlier tonight, I have come to two conclusions:

1) John Stossel is a fucking tool
2) Mick Huckabee is not far behind

First was Stossel’s program where he was debating a Vegan woman and a Natural foods guy about whether or not eating well is really a good thing (yes, you read that right).

Stossel actually said to both of them point blank: “Americans are eating more processed food than ever before and yet we’re living longer, maybe its you two guys are out to London on this.”

Truly remarkable stupidity.

It gets better worse though. Huckabee then opens his show with a monologue about how apparently China is becoming “more like America used to be” and America is becoming “more like China used to be”. He then proceeds to make the case that we, as a country, really should adopt Chinese style regulations to get the economy going.

I really do believe sane people can’t watch Fox without their blood pressure spiking, it really is that bad.

And on another note, I’ve been doing some pondering on the 2nd Amendment lately and I have a question.

The second half of the amendment states: “the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”

Now, I’m no constitutional expert but I can’t help but think the words “when necessary” shouldn’t be beside the word “arms”.

Of course I know that would open up a whole can of worms about what exactly “necessary” would mean, but come on, would the Founding Fathers have really wanted a society where everyone was walking around with a pistol on their hip?

I’m the kind of person who will “bear arms” only when my safety is legitimately threatened or when I’m target shooting or hunting. I see nothing constructive to be gained by going shopping with my 9mm by my side.

ER sent me out at 10PM with a prescription for feel-good stuff to keep the little bastards at bay until tomorrow’s urology appointment. Did you know our town has TWO all-night pharmacies? Neither did the staff of either of them, who didn’t show up to turn off their “24 Hour” signs.

Call to Bait Shop:
‘“Yeah, we can give you another screaming meemie pain shot. (That one’s wearing off isn’t it?) You just have to come back through the ER and be re-admitted.”

I got a fifth of Tullamore Dew, and I’m going to drink it until I go NPO at midnight. If it doesn’t kill the pain, it will certainly give me a good hangover and highlight my Patient of the Year performance tomorrow.

If only I had a fuckn’ Confederate Minie ball to bite…

I feel your pain, brother. Or I did, once. At the time, we were living in a small town 45 minutes outside a bigger city, where of course we would need to go for any kind of hospital care covered my insurance. The closer hospital 15 minutes away was not in my insurance coverage.

Sometime during a day off I get an excruciating pain in my abdomen. I mean, godawful pain, worse than when I badly sprained my ankle in a fall. I figure appendicitis. WTF knows? My eldest child at the time was 16, but not yet driving. My ex was god knows where. An ambulance is too expensive. So, I chose to drive myself 45 minutes to the nearest Humana hospital and admit myself to the ER. Several tests later, I’m diagnosed with a kidney stone and they admit me. i had to specifically ask the nurse for a painkiller. Otherwise, I would going to lie in excruciating pain in bed until the little bugger passed.

Which it did. They released me the next day, and asked if someone would pick me up, since the painkiller was still in my system. I lied, and said yes. Drove back home.

Haven’t had a stone since, and it’s been 24 years.

— Straight 6 or V8?; has bearing on gas mileage and towing cap.
— Time since last overhaul of motor
— Manual or auto? (I’m guessing manual); does the missus like driving manual?
— three on the tree or four on the floor? See above.
— Time since last trans overhaul
— Rust?
— Suspension/steering: in good shape, or needing major work?

If it’s mechanically sound, and you’re both in agreement, then buy the sucker. It’s a good looking truck. Just don’t send me any repair bills.

A lot of parts may carry over between brands. I don’t know about corn binder trucks. Years ago an outfit I worked for got several International Travel-alls (Pre Chevy Suburbans). They were very heavy and drove just like tanks. But they had one bad habit. If you were driving along at 55 MPH the vehicle would take an unexpected “hop” and you would find yourself driving down the adjoining lane. The Travel-alls spent more time in the dealers shop than on the road. Never could fix the problem. Got rid of them with less than 15 K miles. The most unsafe vehicle I have ever driven.

Also the gas tank filler hole is located in the right front fender just behind the wheel. Hard to gas up.

The only Int’ls I’ve ever seen have been on farms. I remember Travel-Alls. They were the kind of truck a company might use for service calls, or transporting workers and gear to a job site. But, again, I never knew anyone who actually drove one.

The lane-hopping feature is a good argument against buying one, especially if most of your driving is on two-laners.

That lane hopping would scare the crap out of you. Got to the point where everyone refused to drive or ride in one. On the plus side they were one of the biggest passenger vehicles on the road so they had the weight advantage in any accident. But, no one wanted to take that chance.

The gas tank was between the outside of the right main frame and the rocker panels on the passenger side. It extended from the front wheel well back to the rear wheel well. Not a very safe location!!!

D.H. Lawrence argued that the Book of Revelation is actually a work of pagan literature that had been overwritten and revised to make it fit with a Christian eschatological perspective. The little book he wrote on the subject, Apocalypse, is unfortunately somewhat rambling, but it covers the idea pretty well if you can read through Lawrence’s tirades and get to the heart of the matter. He notes that one can still find traces of the Book of Revelation’s pagan origins in some of its verses, notably Revelation 12:1…

And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars:

which Lawrence argues most likely has its origin in literature from one of the pagan mystery cults so ubiquitous in the ancient Mediterranean world.

That particular verse is, to me at least, absolutely redolent with pagan imagery from Mid to Late Antiquity.

If you read the Revelation of John with some knowledge of Daniel and Ezekiel, you can find where many parts of Revelation are a repackaging of later Jewish writings, including non-canonical writings.

And the paganism is certainly there but I believe it was brought in via the adoption of Babylonian mysticism by Judahites when living there. Besides the obvious ancient pagan symbols that are spread throughout the religious works of middle to late antiquity.

Religious leaders and teachers like to believe they get new revelations, but the same ideas keep getting recycled over and over.

I guess I’m lucky I live in a place where a Lowe’s and a Home Depot are the same distance from my house. However, since we’ve remodeled our house pretty much entirely, inside and out, I’m afraid that HD has got quite a lot of our money over the years as a matter of practicality. Home Depot is based in Atlanta, I think I’ll call them up today and let them know that this really isn’t cool with me. And, if I ever happen to end up having to go there and see some gun humping idiot, I’ll walk right back out and tell the manager why. I think at this point that’s the only thing we can do with these fools. Some people have no choice, there’s no other hardware/home improvement store around for miles and if they need something, that’s that. Personally, I have no problem with firearms; I own two myself. Both are licensed and registered with the Czech Federal Police. I have permanent residence status here, so for me it’s legal to do so. Both are for hunting, a shotgun and a long-rifle. If I ever decide to sell them, I will have to obtain a criminal background check from the prospective buyer, and then go - with the buyer - to Five-O and register the private sale to show that I’ve legally sold the firearm.

This is not a problem for me. I have a hard time imagining that it would be a problem with anyone.

I just called Lowe’s corporate and talked to a guy named “Will” who, at first, wanted to know my zip code and said carrying weapons inside the stores depended on local, state and federal laws. Then, he said, let me check one thing further. Evidently he went to the “corporate rules” book and said that Lowe’s does not permit any weapons on its premises, including the parking lot (which is Lowe’s property as well).

The only exception is LE. I told him I was boycotting Home Depot for allowing weapons on its properties.

I think Lowe’s is about to pick up some business.

Even if we don’t/can’t boycott them, they still need to hear that these lax and insane gun policies are unwanted and unneeded. I think that’s honestly better than a boycott in a lot of ways. John Menard eh? I know all about him from my heavy following of CART/Indy car racing. He was one of the big team owners. Many years ago there was a web site that listed all of his quirks. Some of it was truly sick. After reading that I knew I never wanted to go into one of his stores. At that time there were very few stores in Ohio. In the last 5 years they have opened 3 of them in the Columbus area. Haven’t been in one yet. Hope to never be forced to have to buy anything from that idiot.

My brother bought a fully framed patio door to replace the one that was rotting out in his home. When he got it home and really started to work to get it in he found all kinds of issues. Basically it was a cheap piece of junk. He asked for a replacement and that broke out into a 6 month war with Menards.

William, you only touch on his creepiness. It is very deep and wide.

You’re right, but they’ve become even more “conservative” since they’ve became corporate and “went big” and international. I worked there, and while the pay wasn’t all that terrific, it was still a bit more than some retail, and you had opportunities to go from the bottom to mgmt within the stores. Before it went totally and corporately public, many old timers were able to accumulate small fortunes in their ESOP (which was changing over to 401ks when I started). When I was there in 2002, there was one old guy in our store who had over $1M in his retirement acct; of course, he had been there 30 yrs, but who accumulates 7 figures in a 401k unless they’re making big bucks and are able to stay in the same job for many years these days?

My grandson said the corporate office in Mooresville, NC has 7 entrances and security is absolutely the tightest he’s ever seen. The State even had to build an extra off-ramp on I-77 to accomodate the new hdqtrs. Here are some images: google.com

Here is just a little snippet to give you some idea of his character from the site.

Managers are prohibited from building a home, even if they purchase the construction materials elsewhere. It’s a measure to prevent employee theft, John Menard once told the media. The penalty is termination.

Even minor building projects concerned him. On numerous occasions, former managers say, Menard hired private investigators to take photos when an employee added a deck or addition, then had internal examiners cross-reference the materials in the photos with items the employee had purchased, looking for products that had been stolen.

The most infamous casualty of this policy was Eldon Helget, a lumber yard manager for Menards’ Burnsville, Minn., store. Helget’s daughter was confined to a wheelchair and the narrow hallways in the Helget home made it difficult to get around. When the Helgets could find no home that met their needs, they decided to build from scratch.

But I noticed this morning that the fair and balanced (* cough *) Washington Post, which apparently now hosts the Volokh Conspiracy, has Jonathan Adler expressing concern that this policy isn’t serious climate policy:

So what does Jonathan consider to be “serious climate policy”?

The bottom line is that if we want to achieve atmospheric stabilization, we have to make it possible — and it will only be possible with dramatic technological innovation. In other words, magic, spelled T.E.C.H.N.O.L.O.G.Y.

And his final sentence is just wrong. If innovation was an “afterthought” then we wouldn’t have spent billions of dollars addressing numerous scientific and technical challenges regarding energy production.

The problem with libertarians like Adler is that they really do believe that the “market” is a magic machine.

I don’t even think a boycott is needed in these cases. What’s really wrong is that a small minority of really LOUD, intimidating people hold the microphone. I don’t think for one minute these gun humping freakosauruses are a majority of gun owners. But they get all the attention and focus and many time end up getting their way. Why? Because they are loud,intimidating and persistent and that’s all people see and hear. So pick up a phone and call the main offices of Home Depot, tell them that this open carry insanity makes you uncomfortable and you might not come in as often for those little extras you might want. Hell, a good portion of retail in any market is add on purchases, you go in for paint, you come out with paint, a couple flats of annuals, some flower pots, maybe a couple extra roller covers that were on sale, etc. They won’t know it’s not acceptable unless people let them know, so call and email them. It takes a few minutes and those contacts do have a cumulative effect.

Internal investigations of transient matters are spread so easily. It’s a modern enabled form of gossip.

Things like that have been reported on as long as there were newspapers, too, just in smaller numbers. But the key of a game of ‘telephone’ is it distorts the story. In this case, the story actually didn’t get distorted. It was accurately reported that this guy got suspended for showing a brief clip of blackface video as a way to illustrate a lesson about this history of minstrel shows. The story was accurately reported.

What modern technology did in this case was enable a lot of people to hear and follow the story. It also has probably allowed people to try to pester the school district and others involved in this, without giving them time to handle it internally. But the thing is, it was still the wrong move to suspend this guy, and this same sort of social media attention can and has been used to expose things that really should be exposed, too.

There’s plenty of situations you could choose to show that modern media can mix up a story and make it a game of telephone, but oddly this story is pretty much the opposite. The story was reported accurately.

Bergdahl’s release is a win for the family of Bowe. After 5 years of being a prisoner, he’s finally on his way home, which will be a long journey.

US military officials apparently knew where he was being held, but ruled out a rescue mission because of the likelihood of failure/unacceptable casualties.

Heck, there were already several soldiers who were killed in the ongoing search for Bergdahl. That all speaks to the nature of the soldiers and their mission to make sure that no one gets left behind.

So, who actually wins? 5 Taliban thugs are no longer in Gitmo, and they might eventually make their way back into Afghanistan or Pakistan to pick up where they left off. Don’t doubt for a moment that their every move is being tracked. The Afghan government has been trying to figure a way to reconcile with some elements of the Taliban, and this gives them that opening. Prior efforts to work out a deal have failed because of either US or Afghan resistance to a framework for a deal and what it means to both.

The US reduces the Gitmo population by 5, and it may yet spur Congress to address the remaining detainees - either pushing them to release them to 3d parties for oversight, outright releases, or trial in the existing tribunal/justice system. It’s all part of the winding down of the GWoT/shifting to a new phase where UAV strikes will be dominant and ground forces are deemphasized.

That infographic is informative to a point. The Sandy Hook massacre involved a guy who killed his mother to take her legally acquired guns, which were then used to maximum effect in the elementary school.

So, even in that instance, you had a case where someone who legally owned guns ostensibly for their own protection was killed in order to perpetrate an even greater killing spree. What should have been a death knell for the whole nonsensical meme that a good guy with a gun beats a bad guy with a gun gets ignored even though the proximate cause for that massacre was the guy’s ability to take the guns his mother had legally purchased. Those guns made everyone less safe - not more so.

Interesting, I wouldn’t have guessed that. Boko Haram only got added last month. Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan has been on the list for a while but they don’t encompass all Taliban groups. So you are correct that the Taliban in its entirety is not technically designated as a terrorist group but many of the sub-groups they encompass are on the list.

Had a good time at Bubba’s Top Notch Surgery and Bait Shop. Reasonable waiting time in the ER, a doc we know, a quick CT scan. Then it went bad—kidney stone trifecta, or as the doc called it ‘triplets’. I can handle that, at least it wasn’t cancer of the crotch. Then it went badder. ER sent me out at 10PM with a prescription for feel-good stuff to keep the little bastards at bay until tomorrow’s urology appointment. Did you know our town has TWO all-night pharmacies? Neither did the staff of either of them, who didn’t show up to turn off their “24 Hour” signs.

Call to Bait Shop:
‘“Yeah, we can give you another screaming meemie pain shot. (That one’s wearing off isn’t it?) You just have to come back through the ER and be re-admitted.”

I got a fifth of Tullamore Dew, and I’m going to drink it until I go NPO at midnight. If it doesn’t kill the pain, it will certainly give me a good hangover and highlight my Patient of the Year performance tomorrow.

If only I had a fuckn’ Confederate Minie ball to bite…

The President is acting on the US Supreme Court’s ruling that authorizes the EPA to initiate the rules process to deal with these emissions. It’s not coming out of thin air.

But the GOP isn’t acting in good faith and isn’t a negotiating partner when it comes to this, or pretty much anything else that Congress is supposed to be acting on.

The GOP is anti-science (Boehner claims he’s not qualified to legislate on this because “science”). Umm, that’s the job of Congress - and he and the rest of the GOP have all the scientists and experts available to inform them of the state of the science and the climate. It’s indisputable despite claims from the energy lobby and right wing that climate change isn’t happening, isn’t due to human actions, and/or that there’s nothing we can do to stop it.

We can certainly reduce our emissions and reduce what we’re polluting in the environment, but they simply don’t care. States will still be able to figure out how to do this on their own - but they’ve got to reduce the emissions in-state by 30%.

Looks like - as the article noted - there may be more use of practical effects vs CGI, which is nice to see.

Even though it wasn’t exactly the best film ever, if you recall the blowing up of the White House in Independence Day, that was good old-fashioned practical effects and pyrotechnics. Which made that scene work - the eye can detect CG vs optical miniatures.

Jurassic Park is a good example because it leverages CGI without using it as a crutch. It still employs “old school” effects, IIRC a lot of the shots with T-Rex are animatronics. But the producers used CGI to accomplish what optical effects could not, which is to make the dinosaurs and their movements real enough to suspend disbelief. That should be the goal of any high concept movie, but alas it seems filmmakers are too lazy and too quick to get product to market to care.

Christopher Nolan is well-known for his preference for practical effects over CGI; I have little doubt that’s why his films are so popular, apart from good writing and taut directing.

I saw a minivan flip over twice this weekend. Happened behind me near West Chester - heard brake squeal and looked into rear mirror to see a minivan go over a low concrete divider roll over twice and come to a halt on a broad shoulder in an upright position. Some smoke, and a lot of dust.

Luckily the location was pretty close to both a hospital and a fire station. No idea on the extent of injuries or damage since I am having little luck finding mention of it via Google searches.

At least that is targeting the suspected criminals, rather than getting 20,000 nothings for every “bad” person you might just stumble across.
