The Edward Snowden-Oliver Stone Convergence Is Here at Last

Bringing the special Stone magic to the story
Arts • Views: 29,134

This is absolutely the perfect choice to direct a movie about Edward Snowden — the nuttiest conspiracy-mongering filmmaker in America: Oliver Stone Will Direct Film on Edward Snowden.

The film, produced by longtime Stone partner Moritz Borman, will be based on “The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World’s Most Wanted Man,” by Guardian journalist Luke Harding, the Guardian reports. Snowden leaked the documents to Guardian columnist Glenn Greenwald in June 2013.

The film would be Stone’s latest take on a contemporary political issue after pictures like W. and Nixon, and is likely to spawn plenty of controversy.

Oh no, controversy? I’m sure they wouldn’t want that.

Now they just need to have Aaron Sorkin write it so Snowden can come off as a smooth-talking, witty strategic genius sticking it to the man. If he can do it for Mark Zuckerberg, he can do it for anybody.

I don’t disagree with today’s POTUS ruling, but Robert’s language raises a red flag.

Allowing Bond to be prosecuted under a treaty aimed at compounds such as ricin, sarin and mustard gas, Roberts said, would elevate dish detergent, stain remover and vinegar to chemical weapons status.

“Any parent would be guilty of a serious federal offense — possession of a chemical weapon — when, exasperated by the children’s repeated failure to clean the goldfish tank, he considers poisoning the fish with a few drops of vinegar,” he said.

I’m not saying that a parent poisoning their child’s pet is a war crime, but it’s kind of a fucked up, weird, random, pointlessly cruel, side-eye worthy thing for a Supreme Court Justice to readily conjure up as a benign counter example.

Key for this announcement about Oliver Stone is to see where the money is coming from, and going to. Selling an idea to Stone and getting him to comment positively about it could simply be a lead-in to a money pitch for something that will dry up shortly. And at that point any script or development can be dropped or left incomplete in “development hell”.

If it’s Stone’s money though, then it possibly might go somewhere.

Natural Born Killers is a good film; I took it as a savage satire of media sensationalism. It came out around the time of Amy Fischer, the ‘Long Island Lolita’ and all that nonsense, and I can recall how that wretched case was elevated into breathless, wall-to-wall media frenzy.

“…Oliver Stone will write and direct a narrative adaptation of “The Snowden Files,” Luke Harding’s nonfiction account of the ongoing scandal surrounding former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden. The news was announced by the Guardian, which is involved with the film. Harding, a reporter for the British newspaper, received strong reviews for his book, with some describing its pacing as akin to that of a spy thriller.”

This little factoid was brought up by RT, which shows that the Russians, and their poodles, Wikileaks and Godwald, are probably none too pleased about this turn of events.

“‘The Inside Story of Edward Snowden,’ by Someone Who Never Met or Spoke With Edward Snowden,” Greenwald referred to the Harding’s book in a tweet he sent out back in February. WikiLeaks, who has been among the most adamant supporters of both Snowden and Greenwald in the past, called Harding’s book a “hack job” composed of “unattributed re-writes of press reports.”

When it comes to the legality of the Gitmo transfers however, the president’s Republican critics are correct. I fucking hope they were dangerous, if we’ve been holding them prisoner for half a decade. Holding innocent people without trial does, in fact, seem even a little bit worse.

You know who else is dangerous? A large fraction of the hundreds of thousands of people who complete their sentences and are let out of US prisons every year.

But they’re a different shade of skin, so no biggie.

He seems to hint that he might launch search and rescue missions. In terms of risk to American lives I would think that would result in more casualties than the prisoner release. So along with the entire wingnutosphere in unison about the released prisoner, has anyone else noticed that last week at least four GOP parrots (Buckshot Cheney being the most recognizable) squawked the latest about “as I tour throughout the Middle East, I constantly hear America has lost her standing; when will America lead?” nonsense. I love how they never identify anyone as well. These fucksticks, I tell you.

The words ring hollow because they are.

Probably. From what I read yesterday they knew he was being held in Pakistan and had good enough intel to direct drone strikes away from his postion. He was held closely to high value taliban leaders and plenty of fighters. If you think about it rescue mission would be a a hell of a lot riskier than the bin laden raid. The psychiatrist Hans Prinzhorn began collecting for his famous Museum of Pathological Art the same year that Tausk published his essay (within a year Prinzhorn had acquired forty-five hundred works, which are currently housed in the Psychiatric University Hospital in Heidelberg, Germany). One of these images illustrates an Influencing Machine in strikingly graphic form. The artist was Jakob Mohr, a farmer and hawker suffering from paranoid schizophrenia, and his picture shows someone holding a small box which resembles an old-fashioned camera and transmits something like static at its victim. The structural workings of the contraption are explained in a palimpsest of scribbled notes, which Prinzhorn called “word salad.” The operator, who is thought to be the psychiatrist (he wears headphones so that he can listen in on Mohr’s thoughts), aims a radiation tube at his subject that emits “electric waves” and renders him a “hypnotic slave.” The machine’s energy flows two ways—it is a magnet as well as a gun: “Waves are pulled out of me,” Mohr scrawled, “through the positive electrical fluorescent attraction of the organic positive pole as the remote hypnotizer through the earth.” The appliance’s malevolent power over Mohr is illustrated by a series of childishly drawn arrows and wavy tentacles which unite both men in a painful-looking spasm of electricity.

It’s Seattle. Not like you can find a $600/mo apt easily. Those are hard to find around here, even in NC.

Even assuming you get 40 hrs/wk, that’s $600 before taxes, and you have utilities, transportation, clothing, medical, etc to pay, and if you have a kid or 2, it’s even harder since you might have to pay daycare, too. At that amt, you might not not be eligible for food stamps or Medicaid, either, if there is any other income, like a spouse working a similar job.

The working poor are damned if they do, and damned if they don’t.

All of it depends on location, which is why some localities and states are raising their own minimum wages.

re: #26 Charles Johnson

I actually like some of Stone’s non-conspiracy films a lot. He’s a talented filmmaker. U Turn was a great movie, for one.

The bulk of his work is at least pretty decent and most of those are pretty good: Platoon, Born of the Fourth of July, Natural Born Killers, The Doors, Nixon, World Trade Center, Wall Street (WS: Money Never Sleeps was decent but not up to the standards of the original).

However, some of Stone’s movies are either chock full of CTs or his personal political leanings (JFK, Comadante, Looking for Fidel) or just plain fucking sucked (WTH was he thinking about with Any Given Sunday?; Jamie Foxx, Al Pacino, and the rest of a pretty good cast were just wasted on that turd).

For father of released POW, growing a beard and studying captors defined the years

Bob Henley, former pastor at the Presbyterian Church of the Big Wood, which the Bergdahls attended, recalled how friends periodically would ask Bergdahl if he hadn’t crossed some line, if he hadn’t succumbed to some form of Stockholm syndrome.

“He was very cognizant of that possibility. He never resented it when that came up,” Henley said.

But Bergdahl assured his friends he was just trying to understand his son’s captors, doing whatever he could to ensure his son’s release. “I guess you really had to be in his shoes,” Henley said.

Bergdahl, who has declined to talk with the media, has said he grew his beard as a chronology marking the time that his son was missing. But, Henley said, Bergdahl also did it in a bid to win any small measure of sympathy from his son’s captors.

People are obsessing about this trade because Obama made it. Prisoner exchange is an incredibly old tradition, the Israeli’s do it, and that it went down is actually a sign of more normal warfare. The Taliban definitely has terroristic arms to it, but it’s important to not lose sight of the fact that many Taliban groups are actual fighters, guys who openly proclaim their allegiance and fight, in the field against other soldiers. Their cause is awful, but pretending all of them are terrorists starts the very, very dangerous reassignment of all guerilla forces to ‘terrorist’ status.

The idea that this is going to embolden the Taliban into capturing more US soldiers is just fatuous. As if they didn’t already have all the motivation in the world to kill or capture US soldiers? This is like people who think that the death sentence deters gangsters, who face life-and-death situations all the time.

So this family isn’t going to get the peace they deserve, they’re going to be investigated, what this poor bastard went through and where his mind is at now is going to be splashed all over the front pages, because people have a problem with Obama or have some need to ignore reality and brand all of the Taliban terrorists.

No, what they’re doing is placing doubts in people’s minds about not only the soldier but his father too. He looks “foreign” with his beard and understanding the language, and they’re using that to paint the picture they want painted. I really hope this family doesn’t have to endure a bunch of shit because of wingnuts and their idiot media.

The father didn’t react with hatred & venom. Apparently some people can’t fathom such a thing.

Charles, I have a saved Page feature suggestion now that a few days or even a week could pass before publication. Sometimes events make a Page irrelevant or undesired before publication. I don’t see a delete option for us at that point. I have one in there that I would remove and not take up space with.

Are you referring to a scheduled page?

Right now, once you schedule it, the page gets published at that time and you can’t change it.

But it’s on the to-do list to have some way of editing scheduled pages.

Top of the DKos rec list: Man with a gun? Call 911.

Short and sweet.

Silence is complicity, so if you have a problem with guns being displayed in public, call the police when you see it happening.

I await the many comments explaining why this is a simple-minded and sophomoric action to take that Very Serious People should ignore.

Fits nicely onto a bumpersticker, too.

1) It’s going to get people killed 2) calling 9-11 on legal gun owners who aren’t breaking the law is illegal.

Gus, you gotta remember, January was a couple news cycles ago. That was then, this is now.

People with little brains are like too-small hard drives in a computer. Stuff gets written over the old, time and time again. January is erased now, replaced with what they learned this week.

The Republicans have figured this out with their base. It is why they repealed Obamacare 50+ times, have been on Benghazi since Sept 11, 2012 with three hearings, keep bringing up the IRS and Fast and Furious.

You have to rewrite those files when they become a little corrupted so that they get fresh new updates when new fixes come out.

False reports to police are illegal. This is just as dangerous for the police and the public as it for the gun owner. I know a lot of people would love to instigate a shootout but it’s illegal. immoral and dangerous.

Who decides what’s false? In some states just feeling threatened by someone’s actions and demeanor is assault—a police matter. How the hell else do you get to stand your ground? A dipshit with a long gun locked and loaded in a restaurant is legal until he pulls the trigger. At that point the silent bystanders have failed their duty to stop a massacre.
