Gus, you gotta remember, January was a couple news cycles ago. That was then, this is now.

People with little brains are like too-small hard drives in a computer. Stuff gets written over the old, time and time again. January is erased now, replaced with what they learned this week.

The Republicans have figured this out with their base. It is why they repealed Obamacare 50+ times, have been on Benghazi since Sept 11, 2012 with three hearings, keep bringing up the IRS and Fast and Furious.

You have to rewrite those files when they become a little corrupted so that they get fresh new updates when new fixes come out.

And there is something deeply disturbing about the Obama administration’s just brushing aside a federal law about informing Congress before any release from Gitmo because the President just deemed it unnecessary. Imagine what the Democrats would be saying if President Bush had ignored a federal law because he’d made a signing statement saying he wouldn’t follow the law.

i have been staring at it wondering if the author actually forgot or never knew about the notorious signing statement mania that bush was famous for… really?…

And Bergdahl has neither admitted his guilt nor proclaimed his innocence as yet. There’s been no Article 32 hearing, no trial, no court martial. The military and the intelligence agencies haven’t even begun his debriefing. All we know for certain is that an American solider was taken captive by the enemy, held for years, and returned as part of a prisoner exchange. That’s it. That’s what we know. Would Risen protect anyone who came to him and admitted murder or any other major crime? Or if he knew a crime was going to be committed?

Even the lede in this story is not factually correct:

Further down,

“But Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. hinted last week that the Justice Department might choose not to ask the trial judge to jail Mr. Risen for contempt should he refuse to testify.”

Being a part of the press does not mean you expose every single conversation, confession, or idea you hear from a source.

Additionally, one could draw a fine line and say that Mr. Risen was not acting in his capacity as a reporter for the NYT when he wrote his 2006 book in which this material was exposed. He was acting as an author in search of profit.

Looks like there may have been a bit of an exorcism last night.

Outside that is the world still on its access? With all the blowup of Obama ‘ignoring’ the U.S. Constitution to get a P.O.W. back, I figure the Obama Coup may have happened last night. So, I looked out on the street to see if F.E.M.A. had dropped off my new home, but all I see are recycle containers, a little too small for me to move into.

So they HAD to dig her current photos up and plaster them in print and online. Why? So she can fuel some more hate and be harassed? Because that’s what it looks like to any thinking human.

While the internet has been a blessing to people who love to read and find information, it’s also a curse that’s obvious in situations like these. Sure, we’ve always had hateful people among us, but being online simply brings out the worst in a lot of people and makes it really easy to be much nastier than you might be if you actually had to face the person/people you’re destroying with your hate.

Unless someone comes along pretty much out of nowhere between now and this time next year - when the 2016 campaign will begin in earnest - the GOP is looking at upgrading from clown car to clown 747. It’s the same old bunch of reactionaries, bigots, atavists and fools.

I suppose Jeb Bush could challenge Mrs. Clinton, but the reaction of the GOP base - and by that, I mean the wingnuts - would be tepid at best, and most likely, outright hostile to a Jeb Bush candidacy.

Indeed; 2016 has all the potential to be an electoral debacle for the GOP. Add to that the longer-term problem the GOP is facing - a shrinking voter base - and 2016 could well up being the point where the GOP is no longer competitive on a national level.

That in turn will (hopefully) force the GOP leadership to do some serious soul-searching as to what kind of party that want to be going forward from the point. They will face a Hobson’s Choice - either ditch the wingnut base and try to build a new, more appealing base that reflects modern realities - a choice in which they can expect to lose a few election cycles while the new voter base is being constituted - or stick with their shrill, ever-more extreme wingnut base, and resign themselves to being a regional party in the Deep South and parts of the intermountain West.

Which comes back to a previous point: Sitting out an election because of poutrage is just another sign of immaturity.

Even in my most radical moments when younger, I always voted Democrat. I mean, I wasn’t going to vote for Nixon, Ford (a placeholder), Reagan or any other Republican. Carter may not have been a terrific choice, and I don’t agree with him on some things, but I didn’t think he was evil, either, just somewhat moralistic and a bit too Baptist.

OK, quick reality check.

It does not matter who gets the Dem nomination, the Republicans will be throwing tons of horrible and sad bullshit. The difference between what we see with Hillary and what we see with this unknown other is that we already know the shape, color, and texture of most of what gets thrown at Hillary.

Once I realized that, I became a lot more comfortable with Hillary. I have other potential candidates I prefer, but I no longer cringe at the crap coming if it’s Hillary. (Well, no more than I cringe at the crap because a Democratic candidate is running.)

Where are the front lines, what territory are we taking back or pushing an army out of, etc.? Is AQ or the Taliban an army or are they a terrorist group and a religious political party. No one stuck a flag in the ground or drew a line that was visible.

Americans do not understand terrorism, but they sure do understand the word war. So, war it was.

And I think we pay for that lack of definition. Everything is all messy with terrorist groups.

Now, if you ask me, the Constitution clearly states that as CiC, Pres Obama has the authority to arrange an exchange of prisoners as well as granting a reprieve or a pardon for any offenses which Sgt Bergdahl might have committed.

So everything else is purely political.

There was a provision in the recent defense authorization bill that required a notification of Congress before a prisoner release. The administration says that they’ve let Congress know that talks had been pursued, but that the time of the essence prevented the 30 day notification as required.

Let the GOP hold their hearings. They’re going to get their soundbites, and it will come off as though the GOP doesn’t care about the troops - the optics will be pretty bad for slamming the president for making the deal to get Bergdahl home.

Where the GOP might have traction - is why Hagel was sounding a victory lap when the Army might be pursuing desertion charges against Bergdahl. There’s still a lot that has to be determined before we know what really happened and why. Do we really want to do a prisoner swap to get a guy we want to charge with desertion anyways? Could there have been fewer or less dangerous detainees that could have been swapped? Those are relevant questions, but also suppose that there was another alternative in the release.

We saw that with the Shalit exchange too - releasing hundreds of Palestinians, including those convicted of terrorism against Israel, in exchange for a single Israeli soldier. It’s a lopsided exchange, and the optics don’t look great, but it means the soldier comes home and the military gets to leave no one behind - as true for the US as for Israel.

After all, the whole POW/MIA effort in the US is to make sure all the service members return home. That’s true here as well.

MAybe a little bit. There’s the technicality of 30 days notice to congress but that seems a minor infraction. The possibility of a prisoner swap had been discussed publicly months ago, so it’s not like this was a secret. From what I’ve seen the White House can influence the military to forgo court martial but I think that’s unwise. Let the military do their thing, they aren’t going to throw him in prison but it’s likely they’ll give him short term care to help him readjust but if he’s guilty of desertion (or worse) it would be unfair to give him lifetime benefits, etc. I’d let the military handle the disciplinary issues.

But these same people, these very same people, would leave an American soldier to die at the hands of the Taliban and they refuse to cheer his safe return, solely because they hate Barack Obama beyond all rational bounds and they will not allow this administration any victory no matter how small - even when they themselves have been condemning Obama for leaving an American serviceman in the hands of our enemies.

A few posts up, folks were talking about apathy winning out in the California primaries? This is why. This is a country where a non-zero percentage of people support this kind of obvious, craven bullshit. This is a country where a party that has continually shit all over Obama for not initiating a Rambo-style invasion of Benghazi to save four people, and are now shitting all over him for getting a soldier home, enjoys enthusiastic support from roughly half of the population (give or take). Seriously. The Bush administration is somehow ancient history but the actions of the Democratic Party during the Reconstruction should be used to judge contemporary Democrats. Hehehe. I have the Dan Patrick Show on NBCSports right now. I use it as background noise in the mornings. For those that don’t follow, that is Dan Patrick the sports commentator who has his morning radio/tv show and built his name and rep at ESPN.

Anyway, he just read an email from some secretary of a Baptist church in Texas chiding him to remove his campaign signs from their property left now for a week since the elections.

Uh, that would be Texas Senate member Dan Patrick who won the run-off for the Lieutenant Governor of Texas as the Republican candidate for this fall’s elections. Just a different guy altogether.

I think that would fall under some of the embarrassment Gus was talking about. Really…when you do a search it would help to know who you really are trying to find to contact. But that would require a bit of reading. Well, if they can read.

That’s why I am probably closer to neoliberalism (Keohane and Dye) than to neorealism (see Kenneth Waltz, Theory of International Politics, which was a response to Hans Morgenthau’s Politics Among Nations) at this point. There are ways nations can work towards goals, which can be to mutual benefit, but neorealism doesn’t address non-state actors on the international stage - eg failed states, terror groups, emerging groups, etc., which include the Taliban. Neorealism also doesn’t account for a group like the Taliban that had no problem siding with OBL in protecting him rather than giving him up, which most any other country would have done. A fusion of the two political theories would go a long way to explaining how nations/groups interact.

I don’t think there’s ever been a concerted effort by the Democratic party to cast aspersions on his service or dedication to his country.

Back in ‘08, there was some dark muttering going around that some fellow POWs had accused him of collaborating with his captors for better treatment. But I also remember a lot of prominent Democrats and leaders on the Left putting the kibosh on that pretty quick, saying that we would not win the election by questioning the man’s time as a POW. Even if we didn’t consider him a hero, we had to at least respect his service to this country.

I think the Kerry experience in a way helped with that. Not that I think the Democratic machine would have done it if Kerry hadn’t been the nominee in 2004 but I think the Kerry experience showed a lot of high ranking Democrats that the right would attack one’s military service if they felt it was justified. And the Dems while they’re not saints obviously know that’s a low blow and instead went after McCain’s lack of political scruples.

Of course as someone who is pretty familiar with Kerry’s biography and time in the Navy, it annoyed me how the media and subsequently Joe Public would focus on the Swift Boat Vets but never the guys who served directly with Kerry who had good things to say about him as an officer and ignored that many of the same Swift Boat Vets who appeared in the ads against him had supported him in his past runs for office. Hell Zell Miller who savagely attacked Kerry at that year’s RNC had as recently as a few years prior spoken highly of Kerry.

This isn’t unique to women-and no worse than celebs announcing whose designer clothes they’re wearing. I’m sure someone out there is busily figuring out how to play to men’s insecurities that can be fixed with Google Glass as well. (Maybe Google Glass-and-assault-rifle combo?/)

Personally, I view one of the great gifts that either my genes or my family background gave me is that I figured out at about 16 that I was never going to be a world famous celebrity-and that I was probably happier that way. I’m not terribly interested in trying to impress the world with Who I Am.

I’m willing to give Berdahl some slack. We don’t know what he’s been through but we do know it’s been very difficult. However it does seem he was at least careless and possibly stupidly reckless and his actions may have contributed to his own predicament. I’ll give the same slack to his fellow soldiers. Some of them may be overstating their case but Bergdahl’s capture (and possible desertion) was a big pain in their ass and put a lot of people at risk. Military discipline is there for good reason. It’s dangerous work and reckless decisions in the battle field can get people killed. I won’t begrudge the soldiers he left behind for grumbling. They have a right. Like everything else these days this situation has devolved into a partisan pissing contest.

Well Killgore, unless and until he either faces a court-martial or is sent home without word, I’ve no word either way as to whether he deserted or not. What I do have are a bunch of his “buddies” who, either because he didn’t fit in or because they hold a grudge towards their superiors, are taking it out on him. I’ve no doubt that the talk his being a deserter started as barracks talk, the guys who didn’t like him to begin with floating it as an excuse for his capture. And until there’s any hard evidence otherwise, that’s all I consider it.

Before I lost weight, I used to be a meat and potatoes type. Still am to some degree but dieting has really made me appreciate foods I didn’t think about before. Really want to give Pho another shot. Tried it once when I was younger but it really didn’t do it for me but but my tastebuds are in constant evolution.

Hummus and oven baked veggie chips (parsnips, sweet potato, beets, carrots, etc.) have become our go-to snacks since we gave up the pre-packaged snack foods.
My favorite hummus recipe uses sweet potatoes. Depending on the consistency, it can be a dip or a sandwich spread.

I have long thought they were contemptible, superficial, and dishonest, but to attack a young man who has been retrieved from the clutches of head-chopping barbarians, from the very gates of Hell? To vilify his parents in what should be a moment of ecstatic celebration? To assault those who have worked this miracle of deliverance?

As I mentioned shortly after the events (but seldom since), I was in Iraq when Privates Kristian Menchaca and Tommy Tucker were captured, tortured, and mutilated by Al Qaeda savages. I arrived at the pump house where their bodies had been found just a a half hour or so after the bodies had been removed. I did not see the bodies, but I did see the ashen faced soldiers and Iraqi officials who had. The chief perpetrator, AQ commander Abu Ayyub al-Masri, was eventually hunted down and killed like a rabid dog, and another Iraqi (the actual torturer) was hanged after being convicted by an Iraqi court, but how much better it would have been if we had somehow managed to trade a few captured terrorists for the soldiers.

Apparently we have a good many people who would have preferred a similar outcome for Bowe Bergdahl, yet they represent themselves as compassionate, moral, and patriotic. If they win in 2016, we will be in the hands of devils.

I imagine one of the first things that would have happened is they would have moved him to a new location further into Pakistan, making talk about sending in the military to retrieve him all the more perilous.

On the other hand, it would have put the GOP between the proverbial rock and hard place, trying to argue that releasing “terrorists” is not worth getting this guy back, but sending soldiers to possible death to retrieve a “deserter” is totally worth it.

Technically, they were listed as POWs and were not facing any criminal charges in military or civilian courts.

Definitions other than a strict legal one based on specific, formal charges are equally valid in this context. They had aided and abetted Al Qaeda by their own admission and they have been freed through the efforts of a designated terrorist organization, the Haqqani network.

For contrast and perspective, Bush and Cheney have not been charged with war crimes, let alone convicted, but I would not claim that this absence of formal charges, by itself, refutes those who assert their guilt.

Cain was asked about remarks he made earlier in the day during a CNN interview about whether he would consider a prisoner exchange involving suspected terrorists jailed at the naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and an American soldier, similar to the deal that freed Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit along with more than 1,000 Palestinians.
It has been a longstanding policy of the United States not to negotiate with terrorist groups, but Cain didn’t say that.
“I could see myself authorizing that kind of transfer but what I would do is I would make sure that I got all of the information,” Cain told CNN before the debate. “I got all of the input, considered all of the options. And then, the president has to be the president and make a judgment call. I can make that call if I had to.”

Prisoner swaps like Sgt. Bergdahl’s are nothing new

For some, the fight over Guantanamo seems to have unmasked opposing views of executive power - Obama’s exercise of it and Congress’s attempt to restrain it. But the true motivation behind the Guantanamo dispute is mostly about an attempt by Republicans to shield the Bush presidency and legacy from being held accountable for the torture and inhumane acts it perpetrated in the name of security. That is why trials for detainees in federal courts have been blocked and why transfers out of Guantanamo have been all but shut down.

With little to show for their partisan attacks on everything from health insurance to the deaths of four Americans in Libya, Republicans now hope to tar the freedom of a single American by suggesting it may have endangered the rest of the country. Such a claim doesn’t withstand scrutiny when it comes to the practices of allies, and doesn’t erase the practices of a Republican president who released hundreds of detainees - including some who actually returned to fight U.S. troops. It does, however, draw renewed attention to a detention facility that Obama himself described as a strain on America that needs to be washed away.

THIS. I’ve posted numerous Pages & links about Islam, Muslims, extremism, terrorism resources, etc. but most of them generate little interest. People claim they’re “concerned”, but really all most of them do is make inflammatory (and often ill-informed) comments and post link after link to stories involving horrible things Muslims have done—even when the acts have nothing to do with Islam (i.e. it’s some cultural or criminal shit, but the guy is named Abdul so…)

It’s annoying and makes people look like shallow idiots.
