Just made a comment in the other thread where Gus started this particular conversation. it fits the topic.

————————————————-

Gus, you gotta remember, January was a couple news cycles ago. That was then, this is now.

People with little brains are like too-small hard drives in a computer. Stuff gets written over the old, time and time again. January is erased now, replaced with what they learned this week.

The Republicans have figured this out with their base. It is why they repealed Obamacare 50+ times, have been on Benghazi since Sept 11, 2012 with three hearings, keep bringing up the IRS and Fast and Furious.

You have to rewrite those files when they become a little corrupted so that they get fresh new updates when new fixes come out.

Awesome blogging Gus. Heh. So busted.

8 Lidane  Jun 2, 2014 6:24:19pm

I RT’d this story, and added a hashtag for TCOT.

I would also suggest sending this story to the journalist types that are writing about the RW freakout over Bergdahl’s release. They need to see that many of the same people crying Deserter! Traitor! Eleventy! were demanding his release before it happened.

How Obama Convinced His Spies to Support the Taliban Prisoner Release

…the process for exchanging Taliban for Bergdahl this time was rushed and closely held, in some instances leaving little room for any push back against a policy clearly favored by the White House.

“This was an example of forcing the consensus,” one U.S. military official said. “The White House knew the answer they wanted and they ended up getting it.”

U.S. officials say that this time around there were three factors that swayed Clapper to support the deal. To start, the guarantee from the Kingdom of Qatar to monitor the detainees for a year under a loose form of house arrest. When the deal was first explored in 2011 and 2012, there was no such offer from a third party.

Another factor that changed Clapper’s view on the trade was that the five Taliban officials no longer had access to the same network of fighters that they would have, had they been released several years ago. “A lot of their networks are decimated at this point,” one U.S. intelligence official said.

Finally, by the time the detainees will be allowed to leave Qatar, U.S. troops will be in the process of the final withdrawal from Afghanistan.

i actually found this statement on a right wing blog i check pretty often

And there is something deeply disturbing about the Obama administration’s just brushing aside a federal law about informing Congress before any release from Gitmo because the President just deemed it unnecessary. Imagine what the Democrats would be saying if President Bush had ignored a federal law because he’d made a signing statement saying he wouldn’t follow the law.

i have been staring at it wondering if the author actually forgot or never knew about the notorious signing statement mania that bush was famous for… really?…

If Bowe Bergdahl Is a Deserter, What Should Be Done With Him?

Eugene Fidell, a lecturer on military law at the Yale Law School and co-founder of the National Institute of Military Justice, doubts the case will get that far, even if warranted. “It’s utterly discretionary as a matter of clemency, a matter of judgment, and indeed even as a matter of politics. The authorities can decide this is not a case that they want to do anything about,” he says.

“Let’s assume that the facts demonstrate that he left with an intent to remain away permanently — that is desertion,” Fidell says. “Will the cognizant general officer decide, ‘Look, this guy spent five years [as a prisoner] and we’re just not going to put him through the wringer again?’ No prosecution is mandated by the Uniform Code of Military Justice,” he adds. “We don’t tend to throw the book at these people who are under quite unusual circumstances.”

From the article

“Since we found out about these transfers, members of Congress have had serious concerns based on intelligence assessments and past performance by Qatar,” said a Congressional investigator who was not authorized to comment publicly on the matter.

The State Department’s concerns about Qatar’s supervision of released militants were detailed in a diplomatic cable dated February 2009 by the U.S. embassy in Doha, Qatar’s capital, citing the case of Jarallah al-Marri, a former Guantanamo detainee released to Qatar in July 2008.

In the cable, the U.S. embassy criticized Qatar for failing to follow through on promises to bar al Marri from leaving Qatar, noting he made two trips to Britain since his release from Guantanamo, and that during his second visit, in early 2009, British authorities arrested him.

I don’t expect anything different this time. The guys might stay put for a while but if they want to leave before their year is up the won’t have much trouble. The year wait is kind of silly, I don’t think it will make any difference.

98 Backwoods_Sleuth  Jun 2, 2014 8:26:26pm
99 Killgore Trout  Jun 2, 2014 8:26:57pm
A task force appointed by the White House reviewed the case files of Guantanamo Bay detainees in 2009. Intelligence assessments raised questions about Qatar’s suitability as a destination for freed militants and its ability to impose conditions or restrictions on their movements and activities, the U.S. officials said.

Excerpt.

And Bergdahl has neither admitted his guilt nor proclaimed his innocence as yet. There’s been no Article 32 hearing, no trial, no court martial. The military and the intelligence agencies haven’t even begun his debriefing. All we know for certain is that an American solider was taken captive by the enemy, held for years, and returned as part of a prisoner exchange. That’s it. That’s what we know. We don’t know what events led to his capture, not all of them, not yet. We don’t know the details of his captivity. We don’t know the particulars of his release beyond the broad details that have been published in the press.

Nevertheless, Bergdahl has been condemned by the popular media, by social networks, by pundits and politicians, not because they know more about the situation than you or I do, but solely because they hate the president. If Obama was behind Bergdahl’s release, then Bergdahl is a traitor, Q.E.D. because the president must never, ever, be allowed even the slightest acknowledgement of patriotism.

This condemnation isn’t about Bergdahl, it’s about Obama.

So Qatar might keep them a year, or Qatar might not. This statement is most certainly true, being a tautology. Your concern, however, is based on data that is now 5 years old.

And as points out, the 5 former prisoners are but a drop on the bucket compared to the estimated Taliban forces.

This is exactly the same shit we saw after bin Laden was killed. The GOP bent over backwards attempting to make sure Obama got no credit whatsoever.

Part of it is the usual partisan dickery, but part is also the irrational hatred of Obama. It’s really sick, and these last 5 years are easily the low point in the treatment of a US president by the opposition party.

As has been mentioned elsewhere, Obama’s mistakes were:

1) Not doing a deal that involved weapons, a la St. Reagan
2) securing the release of an American POW while black

The gop reaction is both insane and utterly predictable.

If Bergdahl actually deserted, he’s still OUR deserter. We get him back first, then determine if he deserves a trial and punishment. We don’t just say, “Aah, fuck that guy, he may not be a hero, so let’s give up, let him die.”

Supreme Court Rejects Appeal From Times Reporter Over Refusal to Identify Source

nytimes.com

We should never allow the “rights” of a reporter to shield a criminal from prosecution or to interfere in the prosecution.

Would Risen protect anyone who came to him and admitted murder or any other major crime? Or if he knew a crime was going to be committed?

Even the lede in this story is not factually correct:

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Monday turned down an appeal from James Risen, a reporter for The New York Times facing jail for refusing to identify a confidential source.

Further down,

“But Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. hinted last week that the Justice Department might choose not to ask the trial judge to jail Mr. Risen for contempt should he refuse to testify.”

Being a part of the press does not mean you expose every single conversation, confession, or idea you hear from a source.

Additionally, one could draw a fine line and say that Mr. Risen was not acting in his capacity as a reporter for the NYT when he wrote his 2006 book in which this material was exposed. He was acting as an author in search of profit.

I had no love for the Bush admin, for Rumsfeld, Cheney, et all, and its overstepping and sometimes flagrant abuse of legal boundaries in reaction to 9/11, and the behavior and activities of the various actors in prosecuting the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, but to compromise the prosecution of someone who admitted his role in treasonous activities by invoking “journalistic privilege”, I draw the line.

Morning!

Looks like there may have been a bit of an exorcism last night.

Outside that is the world still on its access? With all the blowup of Obama ‘ignoring’ the U.S. Constitution to get a P.O.W. back, I figure the Obama Coup may have happened last night. So, I looked out on the street to see if F.E.M.A. had dropped off my new home, but all I see are recycle containers, a little too small for me to move into.

I keep waiting.

NRA Slams Media “Trick” Of Using The Word “Shooting” To Describe Mass Shooting
Yeah, that’s the ticket!

This comment from the comments section is brilliant:

All true patriots know that guns (or, more accurately, freedom delivery devices) emit freedom. the LIEberal media insists on ignoring this. When they say that someone like Elliot Rodgers was “stockpiling ammo”, they know this is a horrible leftist trick, when they should be saying he “stockpiled freedom.” The freedom to buy freedom delivery systems, load them with as much freedom as we want, and commit serial freedom delivery is something that cannot be tread upon.

What you are whining about, Matt Barber, is not slavery. It would be slavery if people were randomly kidnapped, chained to big ovens and forced to bake cakes all day and all night for no pay, and not being allowed to eat the cake.

Baking cakes and selling them to customers is business that operates in a public venue. Refusing to sell to a certain class of customer because you don’t approve of their marriage is discrimination.

Yeah, but I’d need a whole mess of those Camry drivers to do the job right. I wouldn’t expect anyone to do it for free. Wingnuts have no problem peering in windows at people’s countertops, why not turn the tables on them with actual truths about themselves?

But isn’t that stooping to their level you might ask? Maybe so. But you know, the reason we find ourselves here now is because there’s never, EVER been enough pushback. And now this pack of rabid wolverines (and I mean no offense to actual rabid wolverines) are digging around and making sure Bergdahl’s fellow soldiers are all over the television and using THEM as a means to their sickening ends. So, not only are they using Bergdahl and his family to add fuel to their hatred, they’re using his fellow soldiers too. How long before these guys end up on Limbaugh, Hannity, O’Reilly or any of the rest of the asshole’s shows? You know the phone calls and research is happening right now, right?

I sometimes wonder just how fucking depraved it has to get before the general public vomits all over itself and gives up on this bullshit. It’s like that NY Post article full of bikini clad photos of the young woman who spurned the asshole who killed those people in CA a couple weeks ago. When SHE WAS ELEVEN. So they HAD to dig her current photos up and plaster them in print and online. Why? So she can fuel some more hate and be harassed? Because that’s what it looks like to any thinking human.

While the internet has been a blessing to people who love to read and find information, it’s also a curse that’s obvious in situations like these. Sure, we’ve always had hateful people among us, but being online simply brings out the worst in a lot of people and makes it really easy to be much nastier than you might be if you actually had to face the person/people you’re destroying with your hate.

Based on the current offering of the GOP, I’d say nobody.

Unless someone comes along pretty much out of nowhere between now and this time next year - when the 2016 campaign will begin in earnest - the GOP is looking at upgrading from clown car to clown 747. It’s the same old bunch of reactionaries, bigots, atavists and fools.

I suppose Jeb Bush could challenge Mrs. Clinton, but the reaction of the GOP base - and by that, I mean the wingnuts - would be tepid at best, and most likely, outright hostile to a Jeb Bush candidacy.

Indeed; 2016 has all the potential to be an electoral debacle for the GOP. Add to that the longer-term problem the GOP is facing - a shrinking voter base - and 2016 could well up being the point where the GOP is no longer competitive on a national level.

That in turn will (hopefully) force the GOP leadership to do some serious soul-searching as to what kind of party that want to be going forward from the point. They will face a Hobson’s Choice - either ditch the wingnut base and try to build a new, more appealing base that reflects modern realities - a choice in which they can expect to lose a few election cycles while the new voter base is being constituted - or stick with their shrill, ever-more extreme wingnut base, and resign themselves to being a regional party in the Deep South and parts of the intermountain West.

Which comes back to a previous point: Sitting out an election because of poutrage is just another sign of immaturity.

Even in my most radical moments when younger, I always voted Democrat. I mean, I wasn’t going to vote for Nixon, Ford (a placeholder), Reagan or any other Republican. I’ve always wondered how we classify terrorists activities as war. I think it was the U.S. that declared it a war against terrorism, but did we ever really declare war in the classic sense?

Where are the front lines, what territory are we taking back or pushing an army out of, etc.? Is AQ or the Taliban an army or are they a terrorist group and a religious political party. No one stuck a flag in the ground or drew a line that was visible.

Americans do not understand terrorism, but they sure do understand the word war. So, war it was.

And I think we pay for that lack of definition. Everything is all messy with terrorist groups.

OFFS. Difference between a deal to get a soldier back that is being held, and simply releasing detainees into the wilds? Greenwald necessarily glosses over the distinction.

The US has been trying to reduce the number of detainees and has released numerous detainees, but there are legal and logistical challenges that Greenwald thinks simply disappears with the Bergdahl deal?

Some detainees still need to be shifted over for trial/tribunals, and that should be expedited.

But there are some are considered to dangerous to be simply released and there are no countries to which they can be released to.

Even the Bergdahl deal isn’t entirely clear how the 5 will be monitored in Qatar to make sure they don’t rejoin the fight. It’s not like we’ve implanted tracker explosive chips and that if they go off the reservation, hasta la pasta, don’t get any on ya. We’ll have eyes on them, but how effective those will be isn’t clear. Some percentage of detainees released have returned to the fight.

Bowe Bergdahl ‘broke that bond,’ says ex-platoon mate

Former Army sergeant Josh Korder, who served with in the same platoon with Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl in Afghanistan, joins TODAY to discuss Bergdahl’s controversial release, and the soldiers he says lost their lives during those searches.

today.com

Expect a lot of piling on.

If Bergdahl is found to have deserted and is put on trial, I want to hear what these guys have to say under oath, as opposed to what they’re saying while chatting with Megyn Kelly.

273 Justanotherhuman  Jun 3, 2014 6:50:02am

All this hoopla over Sgt Bergdahl boils down, essentially, to this, IMHO:

Article II, Section 2 of the Constitution.

“The President shall be commander in chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, and of the militia of the several states, when called into the actual service of the United States; he may require the opinion, in writing, of the principal officer in each of the executive departments, upon any subject relating to the duties of their respective offices, and he shall have power to grant reprieves and pardons for offenses against the United States, except in cases of impeachment.”

Now, if you ask me, the Constitution clearly states that as CiC, Pres Obama has the authority to arrange an exchange of prisoners as well as granting a reprieve or a pardon for any offenses which Sgt Bergdahl might have committed.

So everything else is purely political.

Am I being too literal here?

re: #273 Justanotherhuman

There was a provision in the recent defense authorization bill that required a notification of Congress before a prisoner release. The administration says that they’ve let Congress know that talks had been pursued, but that the time of the essence prevented the 30 day notification as required.

Let the GOP hold their hearings. They’re going to get their soundbites, and it will come off as though the GOP doesn’t care about the troops - the optics will be pretty bad for slamming the president for making the deal to get Bergdahl home.

Where the GOP might have traction - is why Hagel was sounding a victory lap when the Army might be pursuing desertion charges against Bergdahl. There’s still a lot that has to be determined before we know what really happened and why. Do we really want to do a prisoner swap to get a guy we want to charge with desertion anyways? Could there have been fewer or less dangerous detainees that could have been swapped? Those are relevant questions, but also suppose that there was another alternative in the release.

We saw that with the Shalit exchange too - releasing hundreds of Palestinians, including those convicted of terrorism against Israel, in exchange for a single Israeli soldier. It’s a lopsided exchange, and the optics don’t look great, but it means the soldier comes home and the military gets to leave no one behind - as true for the US as for Israel.

After all, the whole POW/MIA effort in the US is to make sure all the service members return home. That’s true here as well.

MAybe a little bit. There’s the technicality of 30 days notice to congress but that seems a minor infraction. The possibility of a prisoner swap had been discussed publicly months ago, so it’s not like this was a secret. From what I’ve seen the White House can influence the military to forgo court martial but I think that’s unwise. Let the military do their thing, they aren’t going to throw him in prison but it’s likely they’ll give him short term care to help him readjust but if he’s guilty of desertion (or worse) it would be unfair to give him lifetime benefits, etc. I’d let the military handle the disciplinary issues.

It was primarily for domestic consumption. Rally the citizenry ‘round to support the administration in its attempts to deal with the issue for the most part. But also hedging a bit for the same citizens to also potentially expect further shocks, or be expected to make some personal sacrifices, in order to deal with the threat as well. The optics won’t matter. There are only two kinds of people where this issue is concerned. Normal, decent human beings who already know that Republicans are miserable backstabbing sons of bitches, and loathsome vermin that would protest the returning of one of our soldiers to try to get cheap shots in on a president they hate.

Via Jim over at Stonekettlestation:

The staggering hypocrisy of this becomes immediately apparent when you realize that the very same folks who would grant an unconditional pardon to the traitorous Edward Snowden, a man who provably and self-admittedly gave aid and comfort to our adversaries during time of war and who continues to do so to this very day, these same people would proclaim Snowden a hero and leave Bergdahl to die unlamented in a Taliban cave - solely because they despise Barack Obama and for no other reason.

For the last two years, these very same people have been screaming for Obama’s impeachment, because the President ordered the targeted killing of Anwar al-Awlaki, an American who publicly renounced his citizenship, declared his allegiance to our sworn enemies, and who then actively took up arms against the United States and loudly encouraged others to do so as well. These same people would sacrifice untold numbers of American soldiers to capture a self-declared terrorist and give him a trial because they simply cannot and will not acknowledge that the president did the right thing, but these very same people would condemn Bergdahl and leave him to rot in Afghanistan without so much as an Article 32 hearing, solely to further their blind hatred of Barack Obama.

For the last eighteen months these very same people have been screaming for Obama’s impeachment. Impeachment? Hell, some of these silly sons of bitches, including sitting members of Congress and members of the military, have marched on the White House demanding the actual overthrow of the United States government and the imprisonment or death of the President, because four Americans died in Benghazi, Libya. They are outraged, outraged beyond logic, beyond prudence, beyond reason, because they believe Obama didn’t do absolutely everything possible up to and including an armed military invasion to save those men. But these same people, these very same people, would leave an American soldier to die at the hands of the Taliban and they refuse to cheer his safe return, solely because they hate Barack Obama beyond all rational bounds and they will not allow this administration any victory no matter how small - even when they themselves have been condemning Obama for leaving an American serviceman in the hands of our enemies.

A few posts up, folks were talking about apathy winning out in the California primaries? This is why. This is a country where a non-zero percentage of people support this kind of obvious, craven bullshit. This is a country where a party that has continually shit all over Obama for not initiating a Rambo-style invasion of Benghazi to save four people, and are now shitting all over him for getting a soldier home, enjoys enthusiastic support from roughly half of the population (give or take). This is a diseased nation that is beyond saving. The sickness has spread to the heart, and there is no cure.

This could even be a total bluff, a la Walter White in Breaking Bad’s final ep. These people should be ashamed, as well as embarrassed. One of our soldiers was a prisoner of the Taliban. The president worked out a not-so original means of bringing the man home: swapping prisoners —a technique that goes back thousands of years. No blood was shed. No money exchanged hands. Our guy comes home, and the 5 prisoners cool their heels in Qatar for a year. We came out the winners in this deal.

Instead, they trash Obama, trash the soldier, and disgrace our nation in front of the entire world.

Uh, that would be Texas Senate member Dan Patrick who won the run-off for the Lieutenant Governor of Texas as the Republican candidate for this fall’s elections. Just a different guy altogether.

I think that would fall under some of the embarrassment Gus was talking about. Really…when you do a search it would help to know who you really are trying to find to contact. But that would require a bit of reading. Well, if they can read.

Praise be to Jesus…pass that woman a brain. I bet she voted for Texas Dan in the elections too.

Yep, desegregating the military is what made the Dixiecrats start to think they may not have a home anymore in the Democratic Party and people like my UN’s namesake, Hubert Humphrey who urged the Democratic Party to leave states rights and embrace human rights.

re: #216 Pie-onist Overlord

What a shithead.

People’s views change over time. They rethink previously held opinions when confronted with new evidence. It’s called maturity.

From the WaPo article

Although he did not pledge to abstain from using signing statements, Obama said he would wield the power more judiciously.

George W. Bush used signing statements to challenge about 1,200 provisions of 172 laws he signed — twice as many as all his predecessors combined, Evans said.

As president, Obama has issued close to 30 signing statements; in the 2013 Defense Authorization Act alone, he challenged more than 20 sections of the law. Among the challenges have been assertions of his power to close Guantanamo Bay, for instance, and to disregard whistleblower protections.

Now, one can question his signing statements, but he never said he would not use them at all. It appears to me he has done what he said; use them more judiciously.

re: #317 Gus

That’s why I am probably closer to neoliberalism (Keohane and Dye) than to neorealism (see Kenneth Waltz, Theory of International Politics, which was a response to Hans Morgenthau’s Politics Among Nations) at this point. There are ways nations can work towards goals, which can be to mutual benefit, but neorealism doesn’t address non-state actors on the international stage - eg failed states, terror groups, emerging groups, etc., which include the Taliban. Neorealism also doesn’t account for a group like the Taliban that had no problem siding with OBL in protecting him rather than giving him up, which most any other country would have done. A fusion of the two political theories would go a long way to explaining how nations/groups interact.

337 Killgore Trout  Jun 3, 2014 7:55:00am

Details about the conditions for the released Taliban have been scant but it looks like there aren’t many restrictions

The Gulf official said the Taliban men, who have been granted Qatari residency permits, will not be treated like prisoners while in Doha and no US officials will be involved in monitoring their movement while in the country.

“Under the deal they have to stay in Qatar for a year and then they will be allowed to travel outside the country… They can go back to Afghanistan if they want to,” the official said.

Sympathy for the locals, you say? Gosh, we can’t have that in a counterinsurgency, can we? Best to keep running children over with Humvees.

I mean I admit, I don’t like McCain and lost a ton of respect for him but for anyone to attack his time during a POW is completely crass. If you want to attack McCain for being a crass political opportunist. I’m the first one in line but what he endured under the NVA is something that no one should cheapen. And of course, that’s exactly what McCain’s fellow Republicans have gone after him for.

The trick in an organization like the military, but really any organization, is to get far enough up the tree to be able to safely deploy your brain/humanity.

Now that is a succinct statement.

423 HappyWarrior  Jun 3, 2014 8:33:32am

re: #416 Targetpractice

Back in ‘08, there was some dark muttering going around that some fellow POWs had accused him of collaborating with his captors for better treatment. But I also remember a lot of prominent Democrats and leaders on the Left putting the kibosh on that pretty quick, saying that we would not win the election by questioning the man’s time as a POW. Even if we didn’t consider him a hero, we had to at least respect his service to this country.

I think the Kerry experience in a way helped with that. Not that I think the Democratic machine would have done it if Kerry hadn’t been the nominee in 2004 but I think the Kerry experience showed a lot of high ranking Democrats that the right would attack one’s military service if they felt it was justified. And the Dems while they’re not saints obviously know that’s a low blow and instead went after McCain’s lack of political scruples.

Of course as someone who is pretty familiar with Kerry’s biography and time in the Navy, it annoyed me how the media and subsequently Joe Public would focus on the Swift Boat Vets but never the guys who served directly with Kerry who had good things to say about him as an officer and ignored that many of the same Swift Boat Vets who appeared in the ads against him had supported him in his past runs for office. Hell Zell Miller who savagely attacked Kerry at that year’s RNC had as recently as a few years prior spoken highly of Kerry.

Well Killgore, unless and until he either faces a court-martial or is sent home without word, I’ve no word either way as to whether he deserted or not. What I do have are a bunch of his “buddies” who, either because he didn’t fit in or because they hold a grudge towards their superiors, are taking it out on him. I’ve no doubt that the talk his being a deserter started as barracks talk, the guys who didn’t like him to begin with floating it as an excuse for his capture. EPA Head Says Significant Changes Possible in Carbon Plan

bloomberg.com

“Texas alone will account for a quarter of the total U.S. reductions, with a cut of 39 percent over the next 15 years if the EPA’s proposed rule is adopted. Kentucky and other coal-dependent states like West Virginia and North Dakota face requirements of less than half that.

“Once achieved, the plan would mean the U.S. had cut emissions from power plants by 30 percent from 2005 levels, according to an administration fact sheet released yesterday.

“McCarthy today said she regretted that 30 percent was highlighted as a target, saying it’s not a goal of the plan but an estimate of what the EPA thinks can be achieved. ” More

Privacy and driver-less cars are tough goals to resolve.. After all by nature that car transmits all the details of travel. Hmm.

n the aftermath of the NSA spying revelations, our society is struggling to equip itself with the laws and public understanding necessary to deal with the spread of technology into every corner of our lives.

Self-driving cars are one place we can start to get it right. They provide yet another example of the challenges to autonomy and freedom brought by technology, and have the potential to bring the debate home for people who don’t feel as concerned by privacy issues related to email and laptops.

On Tuesday, Google unveiled a proper self-driving car, with no steering wheel, no brakes, no pedals. Google expects these no-hands-on-wheel cars to hit the roads in 2017 and it is up to us to craft the laws and policies that will govern their use. Such decisions cannot be left for tomorrow. As Google’s working prototype reveals, the robocars of the future are here. And because people have a long history of projecting personal freedom and autonomy onto automobiles, they will have an innate understanding of the stakes.

GOP: Bergdahl Deal is Obama’s ‘Willie Horton Moment’ Even Though Bush Released More Detainees

Yes, the Republican leadership went there. Back in 2012, when a deal to release Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, an American POW held by the Taliban for five years, was first on the table, Republicans reportedly described the idea as President Obama’s “Willie Horton moment.”

Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany says Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl’s timeline for release will ‘continue to be based on the pace of his healing and reintegration process’ - statement via @NBCNews
End of alert

If Sgt Bergdahl is suffering any psychiatric symptoms, what is happening with his detractors here in the US seems even more cruel.

Cruel is a feature not a bug to some people.

How could he not have some psychiatric problems? I’m sure he needs time to adjust-I don’t think he’ll even see his parents until the end of the week.

She never knew until yesterday that he had put a message on the bottom of the base.

Okay, so Obama gets the man behind the 9/11 attacks. RWers accuse him of being too happy about it or demand to see the photos or grumble because the body wasn’t brought home so it could be desecrated.

He’s able to return a missing POW home. And they accuse him of serving the Taliban’s interests and attack the soldier’s integrity and the father’s because the father zomg grew a beard in solidarity with his son.

You know, I used to think that the right in this country were merely people I disagreed with and could probably co-exist with but it’s really getting hard to when you see the shit that’s being thrown at Sgt. GOP Strategists Arranged Interviews With Angry Members Of Bergdahl’s Platoon

Platoon members said Sergeant Bergdahl, of Hailey, Idaho, was known as bookish and filled with romantic notions that some found odd.
“He wouldn’t drink beer or eat barbecue and hang out with the other 20-year-olds,” Cody Full, another member of Sergeant Bergdahl’s platoon, said in an interview on Monday also arranged by Republican strategists. “He was always in his bunk. He ordered Rosetta Stone for all the languages there, learning Dari and Arabic and Pashto.”

Considered him odd because he wanted to learn instead of swill beer. Also, I thought beer was forbidden?

Well, the Hastings article I read said that his parents started out as ski bums who went to Idaho and settled in. They’re also strict Calvinists.

“Bowe Robert Bergdahl was born in Sun Valley, Idaho, on March 28th, 1986 - the same day as Lady Gaga, as his parents like to point out. Bob and Jani had moved to Idaho from California after college, building a small, two-bedroom home on 40 acres of farmland not far from the small town of Hailey, deep in the mountains of Wood River Valley. His father worked construction, his mother odd jobs, living the life of ski bums, nearly off the grid. In 1983, the year Bowe’s older sister Sky was born, his parents pulled in $7,000 and paid off the hospital bills for her birth with weekly $20 deposits.

“Rather than put their kids in the local school system, Jani and Bob home-schooled Bowe and his sister. Devout Calvinists, they taught the children for six hours a day, instructing them in religious thinkers such as Thomas Aquinas and St. Augustine. “Ethics and morality would be constant verbiage in our conversations,” his father recalls. “Bowe was definitely instilled with truth. He was very philosophical about perceiving ethics.”

Once the illogical thinking reaches critical mass, the logic star collapses upon itself and forms a White Derp. A teaspoon of material from a White Derp is the equivalent of 3 tons of derp on earth. Until this moment, Senator, I think I have never really gauged your cruelty or your recklessness. Fred Fisher is a young man who went to the Harvard Law School and came into my firm and is starting what looks to be a brilliant career with us. Little did I dream you could be so reckless and so cruel as to do an injury to that lad. It is true he is still with Hale and Dorr. It is true that he will continue to be with Hale and Dorr. It is, I regret to say, equally true that I fear he shall always bear a scar needlessly inflicted by you. If it were in my power to forgive you for your reckless cruelty I would do so. If the “establishment” GOP guy wins, what does that make the record for Sarah Palin endorsements?

And what would her record have to be before her endorsement is properly seen as a sort of “kiss of death”?

She’s currently at 33% according to this article. Romney doing much better. I know she endorsed the tea party guy in MS so we’ll have to wait until tonight to see about that:

Bowe Bergdahl Too Fragile for Desertion Questions, Official Says

The official said there are legitimate concerns about Bergdahl’s physical and mental health, which have deteriorated over the years - so serious that doctors have cautioned officials and family not to reach out to even just say “welcome back” yet.

Though the medical facility said today that Bergdahl’s condition is listed as “stable,” it may be a long time, the official said, before Bergdahl can be questioned about his experience with the Taliban.

Now we see the wingnuts for what they truly are.

Their rank and flagrant hypocrisy, their pseudo-patriotism, their loathsome prejudice and bigotry, their single-minded fanaticism, their towering intellectual dishonesty - all are on full display.

Behold, America. This is what you’ve come to; these fatuous fools are the ones who dare to call themselves the upholders of American tradition. They endlessly profess how much they love their country, yet the contempt they have for its government defies description. They say they stand for freedom and liberty, yet all too often they fly the banner of a defunct nation and its discredited ideology - a nation that in its brief life, was the antithesis for everything the United States of America stands for.

They are not patriots, nor lovers of liberty. They are insurrectionists, separatists, and they stand not for freedom, but authoritarianism.

If America falls, it will not be because of men such as President Obama. It will be because of this malignant cancer masquerading as ‘patriotism’ growing within the American body politic.

Are Republicans even human? I have long thought they were contemptible, superficial, and dishonest, but to attack a young man who has been retrieved from the clutches of head-chopping barbarians, from the very gates of Hell? To vilify his parents in what should be a moment of ecstatic celebration? To assault those who have worked this miracle of deliverance?

As I mentioned shortly after the events (but seldom since), I was in Iraq when Privates Kristian Menchaca and Tommy Tucker were captured, tortured, and mutilated by Al Qaeda savages. I arrived at the pump house where their bodies had been found just a a half hour or so after the bodies had been removed. I did not see the bodies, but I did see the ashen faced soldiers and Iraqi officials who had. The chief perpetrator, AQ commander Abu Ayyub al-Masri, was eventually hunted down and killed like a rabid dog, and another Iraqi (the actual torturer) was hanged after being convicted by an Iraqi court, but how much better it would have been if we had somehow managed to trade a few captured terrorists for the soldiers.

Apparently we have a good many people who would have preferred a similar outcome for Bowe Bergdahl, yet they represent themselves as compassionate, moral, and patriotic. If they win in 2016, we will be in the hands of devils.

Who is calling Bergdahl a “hero” and “great soldier”?

Honestly, it sounds like the bile and hatred of a guy who no doubt got reamed six ways to Sunday over Bergdahl’s disappearance and came to the conclusion that the guy who he probably didn’t have a high opinion of in the first place had deliberately deserted just to get his leader in trouble with the brass.

Feinstein told reporters that she received a call from Deputy National Security Adviser Tony Blinken on Monday evening apologizing for what the administration is calling an “oversight.”
“I had a call from the White House last night, from Tony Blinken, apologizing for it,” she said.

“He apologized and said it was an oversight,” she added.

I imagine one of the first things that would have happened is they would have moved him to a new location further into Pakistan, making talk about sending in the military to retrieve him all the more perilous.

On the other hand, it would have put the GOP between the proverbial rock and hard place, trying to argue that releasing “terrorists” is not worth getting this guy back, but sending soldiers to possible death to retrieve a “deserter” is totally worth it.

Conservative bloggers were for Bergdahl release until Obama did it

It turns out some of the Obama administration’s most dogged critics were for the release of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl - “using all means available, including force” - before they were against it.

PJ Media promoted a White House petition in January calling for the release of the soldier held captive by the Taliban, according to links and screen shots compiled by the Little Green Footballs blog.

Don’t forget Patton’s little adventure group sent after his son in law:

On March 26, 1945, Patton sent Task Force Baum, consisting of 314 men, 16 tanks, and assorted other vehicles, 50 miles (80 km) behind German lines to liberate a prisoner of war camp, OFLAG XIII-B near Hammelburg. One of the inmates was Patton’s son-in-law, Lieutenant Colonel John K. Waters, who had been captured in North Africa. The raid was a failure, and only 35 men made it back; the rest were either killed or captured, and all 57 vehicles were lost.

Technically, they were listed as POWs and were not facing any criminal charges in military or civilian courts.

Definitions other than a strict legal one based on specific, formal charges are equally valid in this context. They had aided and abetted Al Qaeda by their own admission and they have been freed through the efforts of a designated terrorist organization, the Haqqani network.

For contrast and perspective, Bush and Cheney have not been charged with war crimes, let alone convicted, but I would not claim that this absence of formal charges, by itself, refutes those who assert their guilt.

Oh, let’s not forget Herman Cain (2011):
Herman Cain says he ‘misspoke’ on considering prisoner transfer

It was a rough night at the GOP debate in Las Vegas for Herman Cain — and after the debate it got rougher still.
Cain was asked about remarks he made earlier in the day during a CNN interview about whether he would consider a prisoner exchange involving suspected terrorists jailed at the naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and an American soldier, similar to the deal that freed Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit along with more than 1,000 Palestinians.
It has been a longstanding policy of the United States not to negotiate with terrorist groups, but Cain didn’t say that.
“I could see myself authorizing that kind of transfer but what I would do is I would make sure that I got all of the information,” Cain told CNN before the debate. “I got all of the input, considered all of the options. And then, the president has to be the president and make a judgment call. I can make that call if I had to.”

Heritage’s new agitprop outlet has its first “journalist” and it’s none other than Sharyl Attkisson, whose first “scoop” is to cast aspersions/blame on President Obama for a NIH study involving oxygen treatments for preemies that operated for all but two months under President Bush (and I’m being charitable by saying two months, when President Obama was sworn in on January 20, 2009).

gawker.com

This is the kind of story that Attkisson couldn’t get run by CBS? Oh wait. The families could only figure out what happened within the past couple of months (after Attkisson had already separated from CBS by the look of it).

I really do wonder if the GOP wants to have hearings into this exchange. Because I’m pretty sure that, between now and when the gavel drops, there’s not going to be a major Republican who can say he was against doing “whatever necessary” to ensure Bergdahl’s release.

770 Shiplord Kirel  Jun 3, 2014 11:32:53am

If Obama had called up the GOP leaders and said, “I propose to trade 5 Gitmo detainees AND withdraw my increased minimum wage proposal in return for Bergdahl’s freedom,” the bastards would now be praising him to the rafters.

We’re on to your scam, GOPers.

She’s also Queen of Fast and Furious, and had her computer mysteriously hacked, no doubt by Obama himself in his spare time. And she’s an antivaxxer, speaking of responsibility for dead babies.

777 FemNaziBitch  Jun 3, 2014 11:35:35am

Prisoner swaps like Sgt. Bergdahl’s are nothing new

For some, the fight over Guantanamo seems to have unmasked opposing views of executive power - Obama’s exercise of it and Congress’s attempt to restrain it. But the true motivation behind the Guantanamo dispute is mostly about an attempt by Republicans to shield the Bush presidency and legacy from being held accountable for the torture and inhumane acts it perpetrated in the name of security. That is why trials for detainees in federal courts have been blocked and why transfers out of Guantanamo have been all but shut down.

With little to show for their partisan attacks on everything from health insurance to the deaths of four Americans in Libya, Republicans now hope to tar the freedom of a single American by suggesting it may have endangered the rest of the country. Such a claim doesn’t withstand scrutiny when it comes to the practices of allies, and doesn’t erase the practices of a Republican president who released hundreds of detainees - including some who actually returned to fight U.S. troops. It does, however, draw renewed attention to a detention facility that Obama himself described as a strain on America that needs to be washed away.

I slept way long this morning. The dogs couldn’t even wake me up. I haven’t read the allergy report yet, but I suspect nature is the culprit. I feel like I have a sleep hangover.

you?

Grass pollen is starting to be a big factor with the allergies. I find myself being tired all the time. Can’t have anything to do with the jackhammering in the street between 7pm and midnight —- every damn night for the past week.

re: #521 Fairly Sure I’m Still Obdicut

But don’t actually, y’know, learn shit about Muslims. Obsess about them and still get confused about what exactly these here “Sufi” fellahs are.

You know who learns about Islam and Muslims? Muslims!

THIS. I’ve posted numerous Pages & links about Islam, Muslims, extremism, terrorism resources, etc. but most of them generate little interest. People claim they’re “concerned”, but really all most of them do is make inflammatory (and often ill-informed) comments and post link after link to stories involving horrible things Muslims have done—even when the acts have nothing to do with Islam (i.e. it’s some cultural or criminal shit, but the guy is named Abdul so…)

It’s annoying and makes people look like shallow idiots.
