Officials in Bergdahl’s Town Deluged With Hateful Right Wing Phone Calls, Cancel Celebration

The smear campaign has whipped up an angry mob
Wingnuts • Views: 35,130

NBC News reports that as a result of the massive right wing smear campaign (unfortunately aided by much of the media) against Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, city officials in his hometown are being deluged with vitriolic, hateful phone calls.

This irrational lynch mob mentality is being fueled very deliberately by right wing blogs and media. They’ve found a juicy target and they’re using it to whip their audiences into a blind rage — which isn’t far from their normal state, anyway.

These phone calls are the direct equivalent of what you’ll see in the comment sections of any right wing site on the web today.

Jane Drussel, the president of the Hailey Chamber of Commerce, has been fielding dozens of angry calls.

“Well, (I feel) disappointment number one, just absolutely total surprise at how bad some of them are,” she told NBC News on Tuesday. …

Drussel said many of the calls are cancelling trips to the town of about 8,000.

“Well, number one is, how dare we as a community support someone who in their mind they’re thinking of as a ‘deserter,’ a traitor. That they had plans to come here on their vacation, they’re no longer coming, they’re cancelling their reservations.”

“I just find that shocking,” she said. “You know, we’re Americans, and we need to act like Americans, and to me that’s un-American. Let things play out, and if there needs to be action taken, I’m sure it will be taken. But that’s not the city of Hailey’s responsibility.”

She said the staffers at the Chamber of Commerce, and at a store she runs, don’t know how to deal with the vitriol.

“(We’re) really surprised at the people who are calling — they are hate calls, they’re not just people voicing an opinion,” she said. “The girls just don’t even… we’re all just absolutely in shock, we don’t know how to respond to that to tell you quite truthfully.”

Bring Bowe Back/Bowe Is Back Event Cancelled

(Hailey, Idaho) - Hailey community members who worked during March and April of this year to organize their annual Bring Bowe Back event in Hailey have asked to cancel the event.

When the news of Bowe Bergdahl’s release was announced this past Saturday, the organizers joyfully declared that the event would be renamed Bowe is Back, and would become a celebration of family and friends being reunited with their son who was had been held captive in Afganistan for five years. In the past, the event had been a celebration of support to the family through these many years.

National media attention on Hailey and this event has led many across the nation to believe that the event is intended to be a military parade. There is broad interest in this topic, as evidenced by the approximate 100 correspondences per day received by the City of Hailey this week. The organizers and Hailey expect a significant increase in attendance to this event, by people who both want to support or protest against it.

In the interest of public safety, the event will be cancelled. Hailey, a town of 8,000, does not have the infrastructure to support an event of the size this could become.

Now that’s the kind of political activism a Republican can really get behind.

But they “support the troops”

Someone linked to a Salon (or Slate, I mix them up all the time) post yesterday about the Right’s view of those in the military - they worship them as heroes, until they do or say something that ISN’T according to the RW script, whether it’s protesting against a war, supporting gay rights, or just supporting Obama. THEN they HATE them with the white hot heat of a thousand suns.

It pointed out that love can turn to hate in an instant, and be every bit as intense, if not more so.

Another point is that the Right worships servicemen and women in the abstract, not as real, flesh and blood individuals. It’s almost part of their religion that soldiers are the absolute essence of America, and thus a REAL soldier would believe exactly as they do - hence the belief that the military would not put down an armed insurrection by the Right - so if one DOES, he’s not just an apostate, he’s like Satan, turning away from All That Is Good, and so that much more deserving of hatred and enmity.

Interesting pathology.

The same way they worship the unborn in the abstract up to the moment they are brought into this world.

And I say “in the abstract” since if they really cared for them in reality they would be heavily supporting pre-natal care, health clinics, etc. rather than cutting funding and throwing up roadblocks at every opportunity.

I can only hope that all this hate aimed at Bergdhal backfires on the GOP. I mean, even if you think he deserves punishment for desertion, we are talking about a kid who just had a friend killed by an enemy attack, and then witnessed a child being run over by his fellow soldiers. Maybe being left to rot in a Taliban prison is a bit overkill given the circumstances?
Also, if you read the Rolling Stone article, he was apparently one of the few compentant soldiers in a platoon of fuck-ups (those fuck-ups are, as you would expect, the same ones running to the right-wing media to smear Bergdahl). As things move forward, I’m betting their will be a lot of backpeddling by conservatives on all this.

Wingnuts’ war on the troops: The ugly lesson of Bowe Bergdahl and Sarah Palin

Less understood is that when a member of the military fails to adhere to the far right’s rigid formula of what a soldier should be (nationalistic, religious, obedient; conservative) right-wingers like Palin come down on them like a ton of bricks. Where they once were heroes of almost mythic proportion, now they become charlatans — or maybe even traitors. During these moments, the far right’s hatred for the apostate soldier can only be understood if it’s recognized as a mirror image of their usual reverence. It’s not just that Sarah Palin is disappointed with Bergdahl for loathing the war in Afghanistan so much that he was “ashamed to be an American”; it’s that she now considers Bergdahl to be someone who is worth so little that the president’s acting to secure his life and liberty is, effectively, an insult to the rest. You know that old truism that nothing can turn to hate as quickly as love? This is what that looks like in politics.

I too would love this to turn against them. I want nothing more than clips of Republican office holders and right wing pundits demanding that POTUS do all he can do to return Sgt. Bergdahl to be played with clips of them later calling him a traitor and demanding POTUS’s impeachment for doing just that. I want the American public to see what a bunch of ugly people the GOP is comprised of and I want it to make Boehner to return to a permanent job as minority leader until his retirement or death.

Barbara Starr for CNN just reported Pentagon officials said there was NO evidence of a note left by Bergdahl as has been alleged.

Also reports that he had left the post before… unnoticed, bringing up the state of the security at the post.

Also, if he had indeed left the post prior to being captured, why wasn’t he under a watch?

Reminds me of something that happened to Werner Klemperer, who famously portrayed Colonel Klink on Hogan’s Heroes, and was the son of renowned conductor Otto Klemperer and soprano Johanna Geisler. Take it away, NY Times obit

Mr. Klemperer, whose Jewish family had escaped Germany in the 1930’s for Los Angeles, found the role a double-edged sword. […]

Years ago Mr. Klemperer was set to serve as grand marshal in a parade in Oregon, but a state legislator protested and said it was wrong to honor an actor who played Colonel Klink. Mr. Klemperer bowed out.

”I found that so ridiculous,” he said, years later. ”I wrote an open letter to the paper in that particular area and I said that I certainly would bow out of this parade, but that it was saddening to me that I, a three-year World War II veteran, had to do that.”

Hey now, none of that. Questioning the operational status of his unit and fellow soldiers is just blind rage against the troops.

13 Things You Need to Know About Bowe Bergdahl

Definitely worth the read.

From there:

4) Bergdahl’s unit in Afghanistan — part of the Obama surge — was beset by deficits of leadership, “a collapse in unit morale and an almost complete breakdown of authority.”

The unruly situation was captured by … a British documentary filmmaker [whose] footage shows a bunch of soldiers who no longer give a shit: breaking even the most basic rules of combat, like wearing baseball caps on patrol instead of helmets.

Oh, no, we don’t need to look at the rest of his unit. Let’s just calm down. I’m sure that’s all been investigated already.

The right has developed a well-honed, well-rehearsed, scarily efficient Demonization Machine, and they use it to push their agenda into mainstream media very successfully.

And it works. The ratings go up. So, why would the media not feed it?

Sometime Saturday morning, some think-tank group somewhere figured out the way they could turn this story into possibly the worst fuck-up in the Obama administration ever. This is his Bill Clinton moment…we have him now. The IRS and Benghazi were to do it, bring Obama down. But they didn’t. This is our opportunity. It has all the good juicy bits.

So, they must see a chance here. A chance they think they can use like no other. By this weekend, this will be a national security problem…Obama selling out this country to the Taliban. High Crimes and Misdemeanors.

Alan West is the day’s test dummy. They have floated out the real plan on his blog (and probably others) as was posted here at LGF in the last thread.

This will be an attempt at an impeachment.

Hope I’m wrong…but this is too pat. The quick turn by everyone to clear history and backtrack too coordinated. The talking points are out and they are sticking to it. This is the real Republican party at work.

This rings very true to me.

So, for the hundredth time, the most pressing US political question:

Why would anyone who is not themselves a true believer in the batshit insanity/evil that is the entirety of this GOP continue to vote affirmatively for such blatant evil?

If 50% + 1 of the the US really is this evil, then we’re doomed and there is no way to avoid it. However, I really don’t think we have 50% + 1 RWNJs in the US. The so-called ‘moderates’ in the GOP need to desert the party en masse to stop providing cover for and enabling the RWNJs.

Distinction without a difference, IMHO. Ultimately, the only positive action a senator can take is with his votes, and the votes wouldn’t be any different from the incumbent’s. Meanwhile, we could be sure of negative action (mouth-running, basically) which would continue to damage the Republican brand.

This article at Mother Jones seems to indicate that even if Bergdahl walked away voluntarily, he was AWOL and not a deserter. Unless it is proved that the soldier has no intention of returning, the soldier isn’t considered to be a deserter until 30 days of being AWOL.

I think it is a difference worth keeping in mind. AWOL can be accidental or sloppy or a temporary brain freeze or whatever. Desertion is much more deliberate and nefarious.

re: #167 EmmaAnne

My grandfather, in the Phillipines in WWII, wrote about punishing AWOL soldiers with regularity and leniency, including one guy who who holed up fishing for a week and then walked back in—in that case, the leniency was partially because when they found him he’d caught a bunch of catfish that they then fried up and ate.

Inherent in this ‘desertion’ charge is that he was joining the Taliban. because otherwise, I mean, where was he ‘deserting’ to? The cry of ‘desertion’ is actually pretty directly accusing him of being a traitor.

Have conservatives backtracked on anything? All of the non-scandals that they’ve tried to pin on President Obama have failed (Benghazi, IRS, Fast & Furious, etc.) but Republicans are still using them in a vain attempt to damage this administration and to raise $$$. They are interested in nothing more than playing political games.

As if that’s possible. You could have video of Bergdahl on patrol being jumped from behind by Taliban fighters and dragged away, and it would matter not a whit.

Yeah, but I get the distinct impression that that mass influx of calls cancelling vacation plans is bullshit. I guess only time will tell, but I doubt someone who has paid a non refundable portion of a plane ticket, hotel room, car rental or whatever is going to throw away a vacation over something like this. It will be interesting to see if the local businesses actually do suffer in any way.

frogs nudes chimes in a lightning poll:

Bergdahl was held captive for five years in Afghanistan. Voters are nearly evenly divided over the Taliban-exchange deal that got him released: 45 percent approve vs. 47 percent disapprove.

While 59 percent of Democrats approve of the swap, nearly a third disapproves (32 percent). Views among Republicans are reversed: 31 percent approve vs. 62 percent disapprove. Independents are more likely to disapprove (49 percent) than approve (41 percent) of the exchange.

It’s worth noting that this has been a fast-moving story and the poll was conducted before it was widely known that Bergdahl had written letters to his father saying he was ashamed to be an American and before the multiple news reports that Bergdahl intentionally walked off his post.

This is whole episode is just surreal. The speed with which this has happened is breathtaking (in the Seinfeldian sense). You have huge swathes of people, egged on by political operatives from one of two national parties (with a huge assist from the MSM) viciously smearing a soldier that was held captive for the last 5 years (along with his parents) with nothing more than hearsay and innuendo. No more than 6 months ago (and if you’d have asked, probably as recently as last week), they were yelling to do whatever needed to be done to get him back.

Now? Fuck him. He’s a traitor. The guy hasn’t even issued a public statement. There has been no investigation. Nothing. It’s well and truly unbelievable.

I think, honestly, it’s the fault of those who, for political gain, spent the last 40 or so years delegitimizing expertise, science, even reality itself. We used to all live in the same world, but saw it from different viewpoints.

Now we no longer share a common reality.

As I read comments on FB posts from Conservatives, or anyplace else where they congregate, I no longer find people living in the same universe as me. They live in a place where what they want to believe is true because they believe it, and if reality dose not conform to their expectations, it’s reality that’s faulty. This has been encouraged by the tearing down of every independent source of verifiable fact, none of which are to be trusted, according to an alarmingly large percentage of our fellow Americans.

Not that I recall. The Vietnam vets were largely draftees, who really didn’t have a hell of a lot of choice in the matter. I’m sure there were SOME who called them babykillers, etc, but by and large the folks protesting were in danger of being drafted themselves, so they were likely more inclined to sympathy rather than hatred.

I think what many Vietnam vets experienced may have had to do with the difference between Vietnam and, say WWII, where the entire nation and economy had been turned over to the war effort, where everyone was in for the duration, and there was a defined end. Vietnam vets returned to the world from a war that was still ongoing, to an America where it was in the news, but didn’t really have much of any effect on day-to-day living. Often they were returned with startling rapidity, and expected to immediately jump back into everyday, humdrum America after being in the jungle in imminent danger of death for no obvious reason for a long time. No parades, no welcome home speeches.

And by the time the whole thing ended, pretty much everyone just wanted it to go away.

My paternal grandfather’s sister had 5 kids, 3 girls and 2 boys. Both the boys were drafted and went to Vietnam. The girls were all hippy dippy flower children (who often babysat me, which was always fun) who went to war protests and the like. I was young then, but I never remember any one being nasty or hateful to any returning veteran. When the brothers came home I remember them being different people than when they left. One helped me learn to read, I remember sitting on his lap and he would read to me for as long as I wanted to. When they came back one was addicted to heroin, the other had trouble keeping a job or any focus. Both had PTSD. Their mom was a widow and her home was always open to everyone, so there were lots of social things going on there all the time. I never once heard or saw anything that was mean or awful relating to her sons. Everyone was way too happy they were alive and home to be anything else.

I was in the same position. We always had some returning vets from Vietnam in our various demonstrations (into the early ’70s), but I never saw anyone spit, hit or otherwise act hostile toward any of them. In fact, some were more vehemently against the war than your ordinary protester—after all, they had seen the horror that was Vietnam first hand.

As I remember it - and my family were fairly active in the peace movement, being part of one of the traditional ‘Peace Churches’ (Mennonite) - was that the peace movement drew a very clear distinction between the Administration and the military brass on the one hand, and the soldiers fighting it on the other.

I have been a VA volunteer for a number of years so I know and talk to a lot of Nam vets. Not yet have I heard one say he was spat upon or otherwise directly mistreated upon return home. What I have heard from several is a resentment directed at the anti-war protesters of the day who they feel belittled their efforts, a kind of ‘insult to injury’ thing. They felt shat upon by the military and government already, forced into that hellhole as so much cannon fodder for no good reason and then they felt disrespected by the people as well.

And how are they going to impeach the President for securing the safe return of an American POW? He’s not the first President to negotiate the release of a POW with our enemies. Saint Ronnie Reagan traded weapons to Iran for the release of hostages. Bush freed scores of Gitmo detainees.

This is just another cycle of faux outrage and hypocrisy by the Rightwing who hate President Obama.

I said I hoped I was wrong. Outside that, keep watching because I don’t think you have been. And one more point, that hatred you mention, they do it for a reason.

Long time lurker here-

Hailey is probably the most urban town in Idaho north of Boise. My family is from near there, and I was there just two years ago. It’s most known for having the airport that the celebrities land at on their way to Sun Valley.

Their heavy tourism season is in the winter, but it’s also a nice place to visit in the summer, especially so you can see the Craters of the Moon national park; well worth it.

I doubt that any of the people calling the CoC had reservations, but don’t pick on Hailey. It’s a nice place full of nice people.

I’m having a hard time thinking of a time that I’ve ever seen a POW being treated as if he was a serial killer who should have been left to rot with his captors.

Well, to make light of it…the Vietnam vets didn’t have to worry how they were treated until they ran for president.

There were some questions about some soldiers involved in the war of course. Lt. William Calley probably the biggest story due to the My Lai Massacre. So, that had huge rumblings of people taking sides and justifying and all that. But nothing like this. Of course, the media wasn’t anywhere near as ubiquitous as now. Has this “leak” been confirmed?

If so, the Taliban were talking about a US soldier answering “a call of nature” just before he was captured. He was captured “after he cleaned up”.

It would be extremely ironic if a Wikileaks release gave the best reason of why Bergdahl was away from his post!

Confirmed? No, but it’s been reported by the media, even as recently as this past March, that Wikileaks had a transcript showing radio chatter from the Taliban in the area at that time. That they’d caught a soldier in a makeshift latrine without a gun and sent out word to make a video announcing his capture.

That might derail the newstrain, can’t have that.

The transcript has both messages. Also, there is no contradiction between them - apparently he was asking for someone English-speaking in the village, and then got captured.

Considering he was described as being “in a haze” by the villagers, for all we know, the guy was high off his coconut and stumbling around.

re: #337 Targetpractice

You consider perhaps that the people making such claims are inserting their own conclusions?

Possibly. But being in the village, asking for English speakers and looking for the Taliban have both been corroborated by the villagers and other guys in his unit. It’s quite possibly true.

And the two “facts” can be rearranged to fit a large number of scenarios dependent on how far apart and in what order the events happened. Thus the need for a more thorough investigation at this point.

It is curious that the Wikileaks cables don;t specifically mention the part about looking for the Taliban, just that he was looking for someone who spoke English. I’m not sure why the Taliban is left out.

What part exactly is left out? Why do you assume anything has been left out?

Could very well have. Wouldn’t be the first soldier who cracked under the pressure. Except this one didn’t massacre 16 civilians before he ran out of ammo.

Another possibility, they either talked him or pressured himself into getting drunk/high and he just wandered off. Again, certainly would not be the first time.

Based on my experience leading wild-land firefighting crews, it’s not uncommon for some idiot to go off wandering around in the pucker-brush to answer a call of nature and never tell anyone where they were going.

Last I heard was 14. Like I said last night, before it’s all over, he’ll be blamed for every death in Afghanistan since 2009.

By the time this is over Bergdahl will have been responsible for all ISAF deaths in Afghanistan.

Then there would have been far more POWs than just Bergdahl. Also, he left his weapons. Sorry, that doesn’t explain anything.

And if something like that did happen, then it is a good explanation for some of the concerns about a cover your ass story by the rest of the guys in his unit.

366 CuriousLurker  Jun 4, 2014 5:23:48pm

Okay, since we’re doing macro shots, here are a couple from the series that caused me to work up a sweat yesterday.

If you’ve never tried this stuff—Nielsen-Massey Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Bean Paste—it’s amazing.

100mm macro 1/13 sec. at f/4.0 ISO 1600, tripod

100mm macro 1/3 sec. at f/11 ISO 1600, tripod, remote shutter release

The exposure & depth of field was much better on the second one, and the remote shutter release really helped keep things sharp.

Next time I’ll try to be more prepared and have my speedlight ready so I can bump the ISO down and not have to worry about camera shake.

I never said it was edited out. I’m not going to play word games. I don’t know why mentions of looking for the taliban weren’t included in the wikileaks cables.

I have to disagree. It probably happens all the time but maybe Bergdahl was just in the wrong place, at the wrong time just as the Taliban were preparing to attack. Yes, it was stupid to leave his weapon behind but we all know that sometimes stupid people do stupid things.

OK, sorry, then I misinterpreted your “I’m not sure why the Taliban is left out.”. It just means that Taliban likely wasn’t mentioned in the first place. (And yes, I know there were claims to the contrary. But human memory is frail. Usually documents have to take precedence.)

Have the truth come out in dribs and drabs later and all the low information voter will remember is that somehow Obama supported a deserting soldier and gave up 5 terrorists to plague the US again.

reince and repeat….

for other examples, see Benghazi, IRS, Fast and Furious, Obamacare, and NSA Oversight

Reince…Ha!
