Fox’s Bergdahl Jihadi Story: “Secret Docs Based on a Purported Eyewitness” Supplied by a Shady Right Wing Group

Welcome to the 80s! It’s Iran-Contra time again!
US News • Views: 32,184

OK, I might as well post the link to this BREAKING BOMBSHELL SCOOP from the always reliable Fox News, but everything you really need to know about it is right there in the first paragraph:

U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl at one point during his captivity converted to Islam, fraternized openly with his captors and declared himself a “mujahid,” or warrior for Islam, according to secret documents prepared on the basis of a purported eyewitness account and obtained by Fox News.

New frontiers in anonymous sourcing! But actually, Fox journalist James Rosen (yes, the one Glenn Greenwald is always championing) does tell us something about where he got these double secret purported eyewitness accounts:

These real-time dispatches were generated by the Eclipse Group, a shadowy private firm of former intelligence officers and operatives that has subcontracted with the Defense Department and prominent corporations to deliver granular intelligence on terrorist activities and other security-related topics, often from challenging environments in far-flung corners of the globe.

The group is run by Duane R. (“Dewey”) Clarridge, a former senior operations officer for the Central Intelligence Agency in the 1980s best known for having been indicted for lying to Congress about his role in the tangled set of events that became known as the Iran-Contra scandal.

Ooohhhkay. When did it become 1980 again? First Ollie North pops up, now this.

For a bit more context on Clarridge, here’s a New York Times article on what he does, mentioning that he was behind a completely bogus report published at Breitbart “News” in 2010 that Mullah Omar had been placed under house arrest in Pakistan: Ex-Spy, Duane R. Clarridge, Runs His Own Private C.I.A.

When the military would not listen to him, Mr. Clarridge found other ways to peddle his information. For instance, his private spies in April and May were reporting that Mullah Muhammad Omar, the reclusive cleric who leads the Afghan Taliban, had been captured by Pakistani officials and placed under house arrest. Associates said Mr. Clarridge believed that Pakistan’s spy service was playing a game: keeping Mullah Omar confined but continuing to support the Afghan Taliban.

Both military and intelligence officials said the information could not be corroborated, but Mr. Clarridge used back channels to pass it on to senior Obama administration officials, including Dennis C. Blair, then the director of national intelligence.

And associates said that Mr. Clarridge, determined to make the information public, arranged for it to get to Mr. Thor, a square-jawed writer of thrillers, a blogger and a regular guest on Mr. Beck’s program on Fox News.

Most of Mr. Thor’s books are yarns about the heroic exploits of Special Operations troops. In interviews, he said he was once embedded with a “black special ops team” and helped expose “a Taliban pornography/murder ring.”

On May 10, biggovernment.com — a Web site run by the conservative commentator Andrew Breitbart — published an “exclusive” by Mr. Thor, who declined to comment for this article.

He declined to comment because the story was false, of course, and wingnuts never admit things like that.

Oh… and speaking of Oliver North?

Breitbart “News,” 13 May 2010: BREAKING: OLIVER NORTH CONFIRMS MULLAH OMAR CAPTURE.

According to secret documents prepared on the basis of a purported eyewitness account and supplied by a shady right wing “private intelligence” firm run by a guy who was convicted of lying to Congress and pushes false stories through Breitbart “News,” this is getting ridiculous.

All we need now is Fawn Hall to show up with a BREAKING BOMBSHELL SCOOP that Bergdahl worked on WMDs for the Taliban.

And thing is, I don’t think we’ve even yet reached the peak of Mt. Bullshit.

2 Kragar  Jun 5, 2014 5:54:54pm

From their “Bombshell”, the only fully sourced and verifiable quote:

Reached by telephone, retired U.S. Marine Corps Gen. James N. Mattis, a 45-year service veteran who served as CENTCOM commander from August 2010 to August 2012, told Fox News he may have received bits and pieces of the intelligence generated by Eclipse, but said Ashley, with whom he maintained a close working relationship, had not forwarded on to him the specific SITREPs cited by Fox News.

Mattis was also adamant that no one at CENTCOM or within the broader U.S. military or intelligence community — despite intensive investigation of such allegations — ever learned of anything to suggest Bergdahl had evolved into an active collaborator with the Haqqani network or the Taliban. “We were always looking for actionable intelligence,” Mattis said. “It wasn’t just the IC [intelligence community]. We had tactical units that were involved in the fight. We had SIGINT. Any collaborators who were on the other side and who came over to our side. We kept an eye on this. … There was never any evidence of collaboration.

Yet another demonstration that lies are the only things the GOP/RWNJs deal with these days.

In any normal midterm of a president’s 6th year, the opposing party can usually make evidence based arguments that the track record of the incumbent POTUS is bad enough to justify change.

However, this does require both doing work and making contact with reality. Right wing nut jobs have decided it is easier to traffic in 100.00% bullshit

I love how a lot of the B roll footage (backgrounds, establishing shots, things like that) don’t come close to matching the exposure / lighting of the main shots. Oh, that’s just one of the questions I’d ask.

“He’s slipped away twice before, so what made this time different?”

“The Rolling Stone article says he asked what items would cause problems if he left the base. Why didn’t anybody think to follow up on that question?”

“Did you see this note that he supposedly left? If so, what did it say?”

And, lastly, “Do you think he didn’t deserve to come home?”

You began to see this in the ’80s, this love of the secret warrior, with the fancy weapons and brawn, and the contempt for democracy. Seriously. The vets of World War II came home and didn’t want to go anywhere for the rest of their lives, and the only “special forces” they knew of were Skorzeny’s. The “Greatest Generation” were GI Joes, not war-lovers.

I know you guys didn’t miss it, since ya’ll always in da know, but just ICYMI (or like me, you were at work til 6pm!) here is the video of President Obama answering the question posed from a reporter today at the joint press conference with Cameron.

President Obama: “I make no apologies…We Do Not Leave Anybody Wearing the American Uniform Behind”

I’m never surprised by controversies that are whipped up in Washington, all right? That’s — that’s par for the course. But I’ll repeat what I said two days ago. We have a basic principle. We do not leave anybody wearing the American uniform behind. We had a prisoner of war whose health had deteriorated and we were deeply concerned about. And we saw an opportunity and we seized it. And I make no apologies for that…

But this basic principle that we don’t leave anybody behind and this basic recognition that often means prisoner exchanges with enemies is not unique to my administration…

This is not a political football…as commander-in-chief of the United States Armed Forces, I am responsible for those kids, and I get letters from parents who say, if you are, in fact, sending my child into war, make sure that that child is being taken care of. And I write too many letters to folks who, unfortunately, don’t see their children again after fighting a war. I make absolutely no apologies for making sure that we get back a young man to his parents and that the American people understand that this is somebody’s child and that we don’t condition whether or not we make the effort to try to get them back.

A real deserter and traitor
Martin James Monti

This numbskull was a USAAF P-38 pilot who (metaphorically) jumped aboard a sinking ship by defecting to the Germans in October, 1944, just 7 months before the end of the war in Europe and at a time when the Nazi empire was clearly doomed. He received the rank of Untersturmführer (2nd LT) in the SS and made propaganda broadcasts for the Nazis under the name “Martin Wiethaupt.” Allied intelligence was aware that this Martin Wiethaupt was almost certainly an American but could not identify him specifically. Monti was captured at the end of the war and, with his actual defection still unknown, he was initially prosecuted only with desertion. He served a year or so before his sentence was commuted to time served (as were most wartime desertion sentences). In 1948, however, the FBI learned about his SS rank and propaganda broadcasts and he was tried for treason. He served 12 years of a 25 year sentence. He died in 2000 at the age of 79.

Oh, this is a good one.

Zoo employee shoots man wearing gorilla suit with tranquilizer

An employee at a zoo in the Canary Islands accidentally shot an employee dressed in a gorilla suit with a tranquillizer dart, according to a report.

The worker in the suit fell to the ground and was immediately transported to a local hospital. By the time he arrived at the hospital, he was in serious condition from an allergic reaction to the dart that is powerful enough to put down a gorilla.

The employee was wearing the suit because of a practice drill preparing workers for an actual animal escape. The veterinarian who shot the dart at the man was not aware the exercise was taking place.

The zoo is Loro Parque located in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain.

Wow to see that name from Blackfish - it was where an orca killed a trainer.

Kinda oh funny, then ooooooooh.

The Guantanamo Docket, a project of The New York Times based on the WikiLeaks documents, also yields some interesting information.

Omari, for example, was a minor Taliban figure who said he was selling used cars when the war started. He also claimed that he was given $500 and a cell phone by a CIA officer named Mark and told to go find Mullah Omar. When he failed to deliver, he was arrested.

I really thought the Senate was going to have another partisan dogfight over reforming the DoVA, but it appears now that will not happen:

Bernie Sanders, John McCain strike VA deal

Sens. Bernie Sanders and John McCain have struck a deal on legislation to reform the Department of Veterans Affairs to expand veterans’ access to health care and make it easier to fire VA officials for misconduct.

The compromise measure, announced Thursday on the Senate floor, includes pieces of three VA bills that have been introduced in the Senate.

The legislation would allow veterans to see private doctors outside the VA system if they experience long wait times or live more than 40 miles from a VA facility. And it incorporates provisions from legislation introduced in the Senate by Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) making it easier to fire VA officials.

Similar legislation overwhelmingly passed the House last month and is included in the Sanders-McCain deal with the addition of an appellate process.

The bill also includes the construction of 26 new VA medical facilities in 18 states and uses $500 million in unobligated VA funds to hire additional VA doctors and nurses.

SNIP

Sanders said that the measure includes some provisions that both sides will object to, but the bill was an important step forward to responding to the VA wait list scandal that led to the resignation of VA Secretary Eric Shinseki, a retired four-star Army general.

“I would have written a very, very different bill,” Sanders said. “Right now we have a crisis on our hands, and its imperative that we will deal with that crisis.”

I must say that Sen. Sanders surprised me on this bill with his willingness to compromise. I want to thank both him and John McCain as well as Senators Richard Burr (R-N.C.) and Patty Murray (D, WA) for acting like adults and getting the job done. This was a show of sanity too rarely seen in Congress today.

Not too likely. The House has enough pressure on it to pass the bill mostly intact. Will it get amended? Highly likely. But gutted? Probably not. And after the House passes its bill, it’ll go to conference committee to get ironed out.

Final passage is going to take some time, but this is how our legislative process works.

re: #150 Dark_Falcon

DF, read the details of the McCain-Sanders bill again:

Under the agreement, veterans would be able to use providers participating in Medicare or federally qualified health centers, as well as Defense Department medical facilities.

Sanders said that agreement reached Thursday still left out many of the priorities he has been advocating for, and he hoped to return to them later.

The bill would also provide in-state tuition for all veterans at public colleges and universities, GI Bill tuition benefits to the spouses of troops killed in the line of duty and increased access to health care for sexual assault victims.

In addition, the measure calls for an independent commission and task force to examine scheduling issues.

Aside from the fact that the GOP will find some way of making the “federally qualified health centers” somehow refuse to “accept Obamacare”, I’ve highlighted the sticking points I can already see for the howler monkeys in the House.

The anti-immigrant assholes will turn the in-state tuition and GI bill benefits for spouses into DREAM Act rants and ways of demonizing brown people, and the anti-choice dipshits will fall all over themselves to turn the provisions for better health care for sexual assault survivors into a reason for forced ultrasounds and scare-mongering about birth control.

If that deal passes even mostly intact I’ll be amazed.

Megyn Kelly does that once in a blue moon - challenging Karl Rove’s election-night nonsense about Ohio, for instance, or chewing out someone for talking nonsense about women-related issues.

Not enough to outweigh the rest of her pushing the party line, like tonight when she was expressing disgust at the idea that anyone would call into question the motivation of Bergdahl’s former fellow soldiers.

157 Dark_Falcon  Jun 5, 2014 9:22:47pm

re: #151 Lidane

I think you’re wrong. Those provisions aren’t going to be seen as very controversial. The only one that might to some, the GI Bill benefits for surviving spouses of those killed in the line of duty, is not going be an issue because no one is going to want to be seen as mistreating the widow of a fallen soldier. At most, that provision might have a caveat attached that it only applies to those in the US legally.

The in-state tuition provision won’t raise a peep because its based on military service and not just high school graduation. And the sexual assault provision won’t trigger a uprising because it doesn’t mention abortion, but rather things like mental health care and provisions for ongoing care for a female vet who was raped. Those points aren’t controversial and bringing up scenarios that aren’t in the bill in order to scream would look too bad to risk. And lastly, Republicans stand to gain too much by passing this bill to throw those gains away for no return by rejecting it.

So again: Amendments, yes. Gutting, no.

Apparently that’s the recon version of the plane. According to one thing I read, Monti *stole* it. It’s not like he was flying it for his job and he took an unschedule right turn at Albuquerque.

That’s correct. Monti, who was rated for the P-38 and P-39, had actually deserted from a replacement depot in India and hitchhiked and finagled his way all the way to Italy. Haha! My dad had the Herb Alpert LP. Here’s a bit of trivia about the cover shot, from Wikipedia.

Whipped Cream & Other Delights sold over 6 million copies in the United States and the album cover alone is considered a classic pop culture icon. It featured model Dolores Erickson wearing chiffon and shaving cream. The picture was taken at a time when Erickson was three months pregnant. The album cover was so popular with Alpert fans that, during concerts, when about to play the song “Whipped Cream”, Alpert would tell the audience, “Sorry, we can’t play the cover for you!”

And from Dolores Erickson’s wiki:

Alpert and Jerry Moss, his business partner in A&M records, were originally not impressed with the sketches of the cover but they agreed to it. The photo shoot was done in one afternoon with Erickson covered with shaving cream with a dollop of whipped cream on her head. Erickson was three months pregnant at the time of the photo shoot, which could have increased her bust size, although she felt that there had been no visible change. As the shoot progressed, the shaving cream began to slide down her breasts slightly. Whorf had taken a couple pictures of this and sent the proofs, along with numerous other shots, to Erickson for her portfolio.[2] When she saw the more risqué pictures, she took them over to a girlfriend’s house and hid them behind her refrigerator because she didn’t want her husband to find them.[3] Initially, Alpert felt an image like that “was maybe pushing it a little too far…I thought the censors would be down on it. But in 2006 it looks pretty darn tame.”[4]

Alpert is now 79. Erickson, 77. Time flies, don’t it?

I remember Pat Cooper, too, but never had any of his albums. He was born Pascuale Caputo in 1929. Still alive and kickin’. He appeared in Analyze This and Analyze That.

Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass were hot during the late ’60s, not so much with teenagers, but with older folks. His music ended up on a TV game show (The Dating Game), a chewing gum commercial, and in the original Casino Royale movie (the parody one, not the Daniel Craig version).

The other two, not so famous.

For the record, I’ve got 12 years on your husband, so he has an excuse.

Pop music has such a short lifespan, anyway. Herb Alpert had his heyday in the late ’60s and early ’70s. He created a distinctive style of music that was sort of easy listening, sort of jazzy, sort of mariachi, and a perfect counterpoint to that noisy music the kids were listening to.

And despite the name of his band, not one of them was from Mexico — mostly session musicians from the LA area.

Movies have a longer lifespan, because the classic ones every generation can enjoy. Not so pop music. It gets dated really quick.

I was having a conversation with someone the other day about Michael Jackson and the new album that’s out of some of his older songs that had never been released. He was asking my impressions of Michael and it was like …well, the guy held a baby over a balcony, and had the child molestation trials.

We had a 4 year difference in ages …but that was a really important 4 years, as far as impressions go. By the time I was old enough to remember music, Michael Jackson had pretty much disappeared from the scene.

To an artist’s fans, their music never dies. (Elvis, for example). But in terms of a wider audience, fame is fleeting in the music biz. Britney Spears was the thing back in the ’80s ’90s. Now, no one under the age of 30 knows who she is, or cares.

Even the over-30s won’t really care after a while. Britney was a made-up star, a creation of a publicity machine more than for inherent skill or talent.

The old movie studios did that sort of thing all the time. There were a lot of “movie stars” whose fame only lasted a few years. Pop music turns them over faster. High fashion even faster than that.

And sat some point, the scandal surrounding the star becomes the main point and the music is secondary. But that was something that Andrew Loog Oldham actively promoted for the the Rolling Stones.

When I got married, I was 36, my (now ex-) wife was 25…

36 / 2 = 18 + 7 = 25….Allah be praised!

At the time when I was coming of age musically, when we listened to music on LPs, the listening experience was very different than it is today. For one, if you didn’t like the currently playing song you had to get out of your chair, walk over to the turntable, carefully pick up the tone arm and advance the needle to the next track. That was a lot of work to avoid three minutes of bad music. You really had to really dislike a song to make skipping it worth the effort. Today, with our fancy iPhones and our digital streaming music subscription services, skipping a song couldn’t be easier. Just tap a button and you are on to the next song. The skip button is now a big part of the overall listening experience. Don’t like a song? Skip it. Never heard a song? Skip it. Just heard a song? Skip it. The Skip even plays a role in how we we pay for music. For most music subscription services if you want the freedom to skip a song whenever you want, you’ll need to be a premium subscriber, otherwise you’ll be limited to a half-dozen or so skips per hour.

I am interested in how people are using the skip button when listening to music so I spent a bit of time taking a closer look at skip data. This and the next blog post or two will be all about the skipping behavior of music listeners. We’ll take a look at how often people skip, whether different listener demographics have different skipping behavior, what artists and genres are most and least likely to trigger skips and more!

“I was a lonely kid and my best friends were pens and paper. My first project was to paint the school. Then I started painting walls. But now I only participate in legal projects,” he says.

The number of his fans is growing every day and among them, well, there is even a police chief. “At first, they were trying to marginalize us, calling us ‘Satanists.’ But there has been a lot of improvement in the last five years. Now even municipalities want us to paint graffiti. I don’t understand that statement at all. Of course the poor fought—there was a draft. My father was 31 yrs old, married w/1 child and I don’t know his draft status or if he volunteered, but he did serve, from what I understand, a year in Hawaii as a civilian cook for the military (I have candids of him there).

Not only was there a draft from 1940 on, many young people (some even lied to get in) voluntarily joined after Pearl Harbor, dropping their civilian wrenches and shovels. The entire country may have griped about shortages in commodities used for the war effort, and there was a black market in those items, but most people understood it was a sacrifice they had to make if Hitler and Hirohito were to be defeated. The women on my mother’s side worked in war production, including my grandmother and her 2 adult daughters (my mother and aunt making batteries at what became Union Carbide) and her oldest son was in the Army at the end (and took advantage of the GI Bill). I may have been a young kid when the war ended, but it still permeated society for years afterwards, sometimes with good, but often with bad, results, as you well know.

Haha! My dad had the Herb Alpert LP. Here’s a bit of trivia about the cover shot, from Wikipedia.

And from Dolores Erickson’s wiki:

Alpert is now 79. Erickson, 77. Time flies, don’t it?

I remember Pat Cooper, too, but never had any of his albums. He was born Pascuale Caputo in 1929. Still alive and kickin’. He appeared in Analyze This and Analyze That.

I had a couple Herb Alpert albums that I had acquired from my mom. He was the reason I left the band woodwind section for brass.

My coworker’s son has been having a hard time with paying for school and working 2 part time jobs. I don’t even know when this kid sleeps. So he’s been thinking about joining the Navy as a way to somehow be able to survive post high school life in a country that education costs are skyrocketing and jobs are scarce.

From previous chats, I have judged this family as not being entirely “Politically aware”. In fact, she doesn’t even “bother to vote”. Thinks both sides are the same etc etc.

Well yesterday she told me that her son has decided that enlisting is not an option at all because how the Republicans are attacking this man and because of their hypocrisy and she called them “disgusting”. She basically said - if that’s how Republicans treat soldiers… than they can all go to hell.

One young man will not be enlisting. Thank goodness.

re: #253 Justanotherhuman

I can tell you your father’s draft status — the 1942 draft called up all able-bodied men, 18-34.

ALL OF THEM.

EVERY SINGLE ONE.

The entire Ivy League student body. All of major league baseball. The President’s sons, cabinet members’ sons, senators’ sons. Every single able-bodied man 18-34.

Then there was the volunteers — men too old to be drafted, boys too young to be drafted, women, the not-quite-able-bodied-but-lied-about-it.

At the height of the war, we had 15 million soldiers in uniform (more than 10 times what we have today), out of a total population of 150 million (less than half what we have today).

We really lucked out losing “only” half a million. Other countries had it so much worse. (the Soviets lost more than 25 million people, a full 15% of their population).

I know you know this, but a side note for the sake of clarity: most of those were civilians, not soldiers.

re: #257 sagehen

I don’t know what his draft status was—it might have been 4-F for all I know. They were requiring men 18-64 to register post-Pearl Harbor.

“After Pearl Harbor the STSA was further amended (December 19, 1941), extending the term of service to the duration of the war and six months and requiring the registration of all men 18 to 64 years of age. “

en.wikipedia.org

But he didn’t serve in the military. He was a civilian worker.

I’ve seen how service plays out in both draft and voluntary scenarios. I prefer the draft, to be honest about it. Volunteers tend to have their own motivation for joining up.

And millions of their dead weren’t from bullets or bombs — the sieges starved a whole lot of them. Eating shoe leather and wallpaper paste because that was closest thing to food remaining…

I often get blank looks telling people about Kharkov, then part of the USSR, now part of Ukraine in WWII.

It had about 300,000 people in it before the war. The front rolled over it four times. Once during Barbarossa, again after Stalingrad, once more in von Manstein’s counterattack and finally taken for good during the general Soviet attack after Kursk.

They found thirty of the original inhabitants remaining there.

It’s hard for people to comprehend that sort of carnage.

Other than Pearl Harbor, which was located in a territory of the US, the US was never invaded. An invasion tends to raise the civilian death toll. It’s also why Britons, for instance, have a different take on WWII than the US—many civilians served as “civil defense” during the war years as Hitler’s grand scheme to conquer Europe and other land masses were put into operation. The entire country was involved, whereas in the US, it was “business as usual” for many Americans.

Many young people are being taken for a ride by the for-profit pop-up schools that the last 20 years have spawned.

Others struggle at universities with equally outlandish prices; and though this makes me a bit unpopular perhaps with some, I think some of the young people are wasting their time at universities because they are simply doing it because they are “supposed to” rather than having a true interest or love in a field.

We are running up unmeetable expectations, I think, for many young people.

Two of the board game threads on the Consimworld (a wargame site) have been running a “70 years ago today” series of postings for the last three years. One is essentially covering the ETO and the other the PTO and Burma/China.

The father of one of the main posters was a C-47 pilot who was in the transport groups that dropped the 82nd Airborne into Normandy on the night of June 5th. (He posted about the airborne drops yesterday since today will be a very busy day for postings.)

The overall threads have been interesting narratives to follow. Readers have been adding additional pieces of information, corrections, or even personal accounts from their families when the appropriate events come up.

I agree. I wish we could return to more vocational style high school options which are the same thing the “for profits” are doing. I never went to “college” to learn typing, bookkeeping, office procedures and machines, etc. I learned all that in HS, along with my academic courses and that was in 10th and 11th grades, long enough to get decent clerical jobs over the years and support 2 kids (not lavishly, but hey, I knew how to budget), even earning enough to buy 2 houses that weren’t subsidized by anyone. Of course, those wouldn’t be offered today in the day of computers, but there are many occupations that could be covered. Sysadms, anyone?

We had lots of kids learning auto mechanics and repair, for instance, instead of being lured in at $25K/yr tuition for some fancy “NASCAR” school, as I saw working at Lowe’s, to pay rent on the crappy housing they were offered. Kids from all over the US thought they were going to work for some racing team and wound up at a Fast Lube instead.

That’s one of the points President Obama was making about getting POWs back at the end of a war. The soldiers themselves are only doing what they’re sent by their leaders to do. Off the battlefield, they’re just regular people. Same goes for football…if a safety sees a quarterback shopping with his wife and kids, he doesn’t just blitz and drive the guy into the canned vegetables - unless it happens to be Tony Romo.

Union and Confederate soldiers marched side by side at the 75th anniversary commemorations in 1938.

There’s a scene in Ken Burns’ “The Civil War” in which the Gettysburg Address is read while these images of the elderly vets of that battle show on screen and Jay Ungar’s “Ashokan Farewell” plays. It’s the absolute pinnacle of that entire miniseries, and leaves me in tears every time.

Edit: I actually think it was scenes from the 1913 reunion, not the 1938 one, but my point remains.

Maddow: Pentagon made up story of Jessica Lynch’s heroism

First, the original report Maddow pointed to — an article in the Washington Post — specifically said that the Pentagon couldn’t confirm the story.

And later, the author of the Post report made clear that his source was not the Pentagon. Loeb, the author, went further to say he does not believe he was fed false information “to create a hero.” The reality is we don’t know who provided the information to Loeb; he and his colleague Schmidt won’t say.

Maddow fails to have the evidence to back up her claim. We rate it False.

For those who were interested by my page on their first two issues, the third issue of the Socialist Gun Review is out. The emphasis of this issue is solidarity with native peoples and their anti-colonial operations. ;)

It’s not bad but it is oh so college student Marxist in it’s language and presentation. Hopefully they’ll remain in support of the proletariat after they graduate into the well educated and (presumably) well employed bourgeoisie… :D

That reminds me, I heard an interview with Ricky Gervais the other day and he has an interesting idea for gun control. Ban the sale of guns but allow people to give them away for free. Removing the capitalist incentive would reduce the number of guns. Probably wouldn’t work but still a cute idea.

So, I finally got around to watching the newest Star Trek from the alternative universe. My son asked me what I thought of it and I told him that Kahn isn’t supposed to be a nearly albino white guy.

He told me I am racist.

So, I guess Kahn is Caan (as in James) in this alternate universe. The Orbit White girl is the new Carol Marcus who is not divorced from Jim Kirk. Tribbles have already invaded the Enterprise and Kirk dies of radiation poisoning and isn’t revived by Marcus’s Genesis Project. Kingons were sexier in the original universe.

The New Spock being able to contact the Real Spock is just cheating.

I decided not to talk with my son about any of this.

I’ll admit that was my hardest bit. I decided to mark it down to all the genetic manipulation they were supposed to have undergone prior to birth. But they should have had someone closer to the classic.

The rest didn’t bug me as much - yeah, Spock to Spock was a bit of a cheat but once you had him live past the end of the first movie it was inevitable for it to show up.

Maddow: Pentagon made up story of Jessica Lynch’s heroism

A classic case of Politifact missing the forest for the trees. What Maddow is saying is that the reporting on stuff like this can wildly misrepresent what happened, and you should give it time before talking about it-rather than what you did, Killgore.

Politifact focuses on the least important part of what Maddow is saying and ignores the rest. The only reason she references the Lynch story is to show, accurately, that in a case like this the reporting can be highly misleading.

In fairness to Benedict Cumberbatch, the role of Khan was initially offered to Benicio Del Toro, but he backed out. They also considred Demian Bichir, Édgar Ramírez and Jordi Mollà, so they were definitely aiming for a Latin actor in the part as a nod to Montalban. It just didn’t work out.

Old news from Tuesday

But the P.E.E. at work this Friday is one of my favorites — the Birth/Death Model in the Labor Department’s Current Employment Statistics (CES).
In the CES, the Labor Department asks thousands of companies how many new jobs they’ve created in the last month. The department then takes the number and puts P.E.E. all over it.
For instance, those 288,000 new jobs allegedly created in April included 234,000 jobs that the Labor Department believes were created (the Birth part of the model) by companies just coming into existence. But it’s really P.E.E. — Washington can’t prove those jobs are real, and when a correction is made to the number next year, few people will notice or care.

I’m willing to cut them a bit of slack because this is still new territory for a lot of them. The fans were not thrilled with the retelling of an old storyline and it showed in the reviews and in the box office performance, so hopefully the next outing will be new material.

I have to wonder if it’s awkward as hell to be the German Chancellor present at a commemoration of D-Day.

Yep. STID was a rehash of Wrath of Khan.

Except I don’t remember Khan’s crew being put into cryo and sealed in a bunch of missiles while Carol Marcus’s father tried to engineer a war with the Klingons in the original film. Or Kirk being brought back from the dead via a transfusion of Khan’s blood.

Freed Taliban Commander Tells Relative He’ll Fight Americans Again

“After arriving in Qatar, Noorullah Noori kept insisting he would go to Afghanistan and fight American forces there,” a Taliban commander told NBC News via telephone from Afghanistan.

Noori pushed to return to Afghanistan after learning that the U.S. had provided written assurances that no country would arrest any of the five freed for a year as long as they lived peacefully, one of his relatives told NBC News by telephone from Afghanistan.

Nah. There’s plenty to mess with in Star Trek. It just has to be done right.

I actually liked Into Darkness for what it was. To me, it’s an alternate universe fan fiction using elements of Wrath of Khan. Plus, they made the Klingons look cool, and Uhura actually spoke Klingon in this one. It was an entertaining bit of fluff.

Yep. STID was a rehash of Wrath of Khan.

I have a somewhat different view, and I say this as a guy who watched Star Trek from the age of 9, from the very first episode ever aired (The Man Trap):

It was just a TV show.

A lot of it, and I do mean A LOT of it, was crap. Yes, it was visionary, and miles ahead of any other science fiction on TV or movies at the time, but still - nearly the whole third season was crap.

The movies, by and large, were crap - especially the first one, which IIRC is the one Gene Roddenberry had the greatest part in making.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Star Trek - TOS, NextGen, DS9, even Voyager, though I never really got into Enterprise. But it’s entertainment, made originally to sell advertizing, and now to fill seats in cinemegaplexes. It ain’t high art.

I actually like that they set it up in a new timeline, so yes, we may see the same heroes and villains, but in different circumstances. It’s either that or let it die, and just stick with what had been done before. Soon, we’d be watching the old episodes ritually, no longer understanding their meaning. They’d become the E Plebnista of Science Fiction.

The whole idea right now is to tie the movies and comics together, as a way to give fans a way to keep immersed in the universe in between the long waits between films. They’ve had everything in the comics so far from remakes of a few original series episodes (The Galileo Seven, Operation: Annihilate), a two-parter in the mirror universe, and even a post STID two-parter involving a run-in with a universe where all the crew are the same…except the genders are reversed.

Sorry, here is the putlizer for the greatest journalism in the whole world of America.

Matthew Continetti was for years a reliable defender of the great and powerful Bush. Then he realized that gravy train wouldn’t run forever, and so devoted himself to defending even greater Americans such as Sarah Palin, and to other variants of rightwing aargh-blaargh. Lately he’s switched his specialty to long hit pieces on Obama. In the latest installment, Obama goes to Italy and has dinner with local luminaries at the ambassador’s residence. Continetti wants us to know this is an outrage

(snip)

I like to imagine the conversations at these parties…

God that Bibi is so unreasonable, who are your favorite authors, it’s time for a real conversation about race, is Homeland like real life, this is the sushi place to go to in Los Angeles, you are a real role model for young men not only in this country but all around the world…

And so on; eventually Continetti criticizes “the phoniness, the small talk, above all the endless putting on airs” of a conversation he just made up. It’s like a transcript of teenage girls dishing on that stuck-up bitch in homeroom, but it’s actually one of Conservatism’s Great Minds writing what he probably thinks is social criticism, or at least a good way to pay the bills until he figures out who to suck up to next.

From Atlanta right now. Shooter in custody.

469 lawhawk  Jun 6, 2014 8:16:25am

So, yesterday, there were two mass shooting incidents that played out.

One in Seattle. The other in Canada.

Both ended with the suspect taken into custody.

In Seattle, the gunman shot up a college campus, and was tackled as he was reloading his shotgun by an unarmed student, who then got assists from other students and they held the shooter until cops took control. But all that happened after the shooter killed one and injured 3 others.

The suspect was identified by a law-enforcement source as Aaron Ybarra, 26, of Mountlake Terrace.

Police on Thursday night were questioning the suspect. He was booked into the King County Jail for investigation of murder, police said.

No motive was immediately given for the shooting. The suspect carried extra shotgun shells, and also a knife, police said.

“He was hellbent on a killing a lot of people today,” said a second law-enforcement source briefed on the investigation.

Jon Meis, a student working as a building monitor, pepper-sprayed the shooter as he stopped to reload, then put him in a chokehold and took him to the ground, according to police and a friend who spoke with Meis after the shooting. Then other students and faculty members rushed to hold the shooter down until police arrived.

But until it was clear that only one shooter was responsible, students barricaded themselves, pulled blinds and waited for word that they were safe. Medics were forced to wait outside until police were sure there was no more danger.

In Canada, three RCMPs were killed and two others injured by a guy toting multiple rifles and guns.

Mr. Bourque, 24, was wanted in connection with the shooting deaths of three RCMP officers Wednesday night.

The victims have been identified as Constables David Ross, 32, Fabrice Georges Gevaudan, 45, and Douglas James Larche, 40.

The two wounded officers were identified as Constable Darlene Gaudin and Constable Éric Dubois. Both are recovering well, according to Assistant Commissioner Roger Brown, the commanding officer for the RCMP in New Brunswick.

The shooter in Canada was running around with all those firearms, and it would have been impossible to tell his intentions were any different from those OCT nutters who think everyone should run around with all kinds of guns.

As Jon Stewart notes, the NRA/OCT nuts think that we should not only have open carry, but stand your ground, which means that public spaces become free fire zones where the only winner is the gun/ammo manufacturers.

A monastery in the Czech Republic has a ghoulish secret for those willing to venture underground - two dozen corpses clutching rosaries are on display.

The bodies in the Capuchin Crypt of the Holy Cross Church, in Brno, date back hundreds of years, but they were only recently rediscovered and opened to public viewing.

The below-ground chamber’s unique soil structure and a system of ventilation ducts allowed the corpses to be mummified in the open air, according to a Brno tourism website.

Return To D-Day: Utah Beach & Tears
June 4, 2013 4:06 PM

On this day, our 8 N Texas D Day vets raised the American flag at the cemetery, in total silence and salute, at 9:15am. There was no one else there, only them. […]

But the most moving moment of the day, came when that same Mr. Blatnik, at 93 years of age, wanted to go onto Omaha beach, and not just in the sand. He wanted to walk the quarter to half mile, to Fox Red One. The zone on Omaha where he and his men landed 69 years ago. As we moved slowly through the sand, with his walker with wheels, Blatnik struggled with his steps, but demanded to press on. Army man to the end. He got his wish. There we stood, in the same sand that he dodged German gunfire on in 1944. Looking straight up into the high ground, and a valley, that would be their strategic target. And then, Blatnik dropped to the sand. With tears in his eyes, he praised the Lord for sparing his life, and prayed even harder that his comrades would be taken care of. He blessed the sand under his hands and knees. The last time Mr. Blatnik was here, the people up the hill from this beach, the soldiers of Hitler’s Nazi war machine, were doing everything in their power to kill him. Today, 69 years later, everyone who lives up that hill, and through the rolling hills of the French countryside and across this nation, praise him. […]

My immediate family missed WW2 service. Grandfather just a little bit too old (late 40s) and father just a little bit too young (he did his military service in the USN mid-50s after college.) Only WW2 vet was one of my uncles who was in the ETO and had brought back a few souvenirs (a pistol and a periscope off a German tank.)

I’ve done some shallow searches on his WW2 service, but have just come up with that he enlisted in 1942 (age 23) and served in what I presume was a rear-area role - 3446th Ordnance Medium Automotive Maintenance Co. Made rank of T-3 (Technical Sgt) by the time he was mustered out.

I should probably ask one of my cousins from that part of the family to see if he ever discussed anything interesting. Though possibly not since I don’t recall my father discussing his military service much among the family.*

* - My mother’s remark about the family memorabilia from that time is that my father must have had some fixation on underway replenishment since he took a lot of pictures of it.

I think that more recent generations of Europeans take a more dispassionate view, but you have to remember that many English cities were essentially flattened in the early stages of the war. To say nothing of the massive physical damage inflicted on Russia (boo!) and indeed Germany.

Remember to the median or average aged person these days, WWII is ancient history.

500 calochortus  Jun 6, 2014 8:44:28am

I skimmed the topics at FR this morning and was interested to see a headline from an unknown (to me anyway) source: “D-Day at 70. When Order Triumphed Over Evil.” I didn’t click on it, but I thought it odd. Why not “good” triumphing?
Order isn’t the opposite of evil, and besides, no one ever called the Germans disorganized. If anything democracy is a bit disorganized, not fascism.

Remember to the median or average aged person these days, WWII is ancient history.

I’m 32 but the War is still very important to me. A lot of personal history there. Both my grandfathers served (one in Air Force, one in Navy), both came back, one even brought back a medal from a Nazi soldier that has become my all time favourite family heirloom.

505 lawhawk  Jun 6, 2014 8:46:49am

On this day in 1967, during the 2d day of the 6 Day War, Israel comes under fire from Syria, while Israel captures Gaza, Ras el Naqeb and Jebel Libni from Egypt. The IDF also captures Ramallah, North East Jerusalem, Ammunition Hill and Talpiot from Jordanian forces, which King Abdullah calls for a retreat from the West Bank.

Nasser had fed all kinds of nonsense to the Syrians about how well the Egyptians were doing in the South and the Jordanians were doing in the East. That turned out to be one of the biggest blunders by the Arab leaders - accepting and believing anything the Egyptians were saying.

But, seeing as they went down this rabbit hole, it was a matter of days before the Syrians and Jordanians lost the Golan and West Bank in their entirety, while the Egyptians were routed from Sinai before the US and Soviets forces a halt to the war (as Israel could have driven right to the capitals of both Egypt and Syria with limited resistance as the Arab lines had broken down.

Ah, what alt-history writers could have done with those scenarios.

Absolutely. I was only saying that, for Europeans of my parents’ age, it’s understandable if they take a slightly sideways look at US involvement in WWII.

I think it’s also interesting to think of the Pacific Theater as essentially a different/separate conflict which happened to take place at the same time.

I’ve been pondering the differences between “balance” and “order” these past few days.

Balance defies moral labels.

Order demands them.

I think there is a Vernor Vinge quote. Something about Good and evil being irrelevant before nature.

Speaking also as a Trek fan, from way back in the ’60s till now, I’m willing to forgive the reboots and character shifts if the new movies can do what the Original Series did.

Inspire people to imagine a future Earth without disease, without famine, without war, when people can work together globally for a common goal.

Granted, the reboots are more into bombastic save-the-universe plots, but there’s still an optimistic tone that, no matter what, we will survive.

Upside - he’s taken to his training like a duck to water. I took him to the vet this week (the 12 pound puppy we brough home now weighs in at 37 pounds, and he’s not done yet!), and he obeyed every command perfectly, even in a waiting room full of other dogs.

Speaking of reboots, I just watched the latest Spider-Man flick. I’ll give it a 6, maybe a 7, on a scale of 10.

re: #509 Sjef

Both of my cats are rescues. My ex-mother-in-law did cat rescue and that’s how I got my oldest (he’s about 13), bill. He was the runt and only survivor of the litter and had to be nursed back to health from the brink of death a few times. They think the mother had herpes and he got it in his eyes and tear ducts so he has a lot of scar tissue on his eyes and in his tear ducts. He seems to see just fine but everything he sees bobs up and down so when he really tries to focus his head bobs up and down. He was named bill cuz he came labelled as “B-ILL” which was Baby ill and with his head bobbing we call him bobble head Bill. Now he’s about 16 lbs and still runs around like crazy (I swear he sees dead people).

re: #563 Brother Holy Cruise Missile of Mild Acceptance

The other is around 8. She was a kitten that was apparently the only survivor of the litter, security guards at my old job found her in the parking garage. She was dirty, had a sinus infection and had a load of fleas (she was about 6 weeks old). Took her to the vet, got her antibiotics and flea treatment and she’s been with me ever since. 581 FemNaziBitch  Jun 6, 2014 9:22:24am
Known as the Skogkatt in its native Norway, the Norwegian Forest Cat is a large, semi-longhaired cat whose rugged appearance fits its name. Despite the hardy facade, this breed is very much a homebody that enjoys the company of other pets and particularly their human companions. Their relationship with you can best be described as “on their own terms.”

Isn’t that last kind of generic for all Feline Overlords? Domestic or otherwise.

I’ve seen a few of that same crash into trees here in Ohio. Same car too (if it was the Subaru Impreza WRX STI - too balled up to tell from image).

That is not all that expensive of a car for the amount of performance, which makes it attractive for young dudes and parents that apparently have no clue to the cars performance. Subaru also packages that car in boy-racer trim right from the factory. Fart muffler, wings, performance tires and wheels, lowered sport suspension, all the trimmings.

There is newer Subaru/Toyota (Subaru BRZ - Scion FR-S) shared performance car that is going to be a real killer for young kids bent on speed and lacking skill. It is front engine rear transaxle (transmission and rear end drive unit in one package) making it a neutral car as far as handling. A great car if you know what you are doing. If not, you can loop that car in a spin so fast you’ll never know what happened before its too late.

Continuing the Canadian theme, James Doohan, as everyone should know, was from Vancouver, British Columbia. During WWII, he was in on the invasion of Normandy, where he was wounded by, of all people, a Canadian sentry. War is haggis.

Unsurprising comments, it’s who the quote is from that really surprises. Feinstein. Huh. Why no support on the left flank? Puzzler.

“I think that they expected everybody just to fall in line,” said Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee and one of those who received a personal apology from a senior White House aide.

Feinstein said the White House failed to anticipate that bypassing Congress would provoke anger on both sides of the aisle. The discovery that the five Afghans were top-ranking Taliban commanders has fueled concerns that the trade may endanger U.S. security.

Top ranking or graybeards that will never pose much of a threat? Besides we have bio markers for all 5 and all the drones. And the vaunted intel services.

Nearly so. I’d probably have to square it off a bit. Not 100% centered on the South Face, but that’s probably the best angle with which to get the immensity of the tower.

If there’s a view/angle of 1WTC that re-captures the size and immensity of the original towers, that’s probably it. It’s the angle that people see it from street level, and the design of the tower draws your eye towards infinity.

Sure, the skyline shots are great (and I’ve taken more than a few of those), but I think this is the angle that does the designer’s intent to recapture the sky its justice.
