Anti-Government “Sovereign Citizen” Attacks Georgia Courthouse With Assault Rifle and Explosives

Today in Georgia’s Forsyth County, yet another far right “sovereign citizen” attempted to take over a courthouse with multiple explosive devices, weapons and a large amount of ammunition, wounding a deputy before he was killed in a shoot-out. The Atlanta-Journal Constitution reported minute by minute: Report: Forsyth Deputy Shot, Suspect Dead, Courthouse Evacuated.

A Forsyth County sheriff’s deputy has been shot in the leg at the courthouse in Cumming, and a suspect is reported dead. Atlanta Journal-Constitution reporters and photographers are on the way to the scene. Return to ajc.com for minute-by-minute updates on the situation.

12:46 p.m. - Forsyth Sheriff Duane Piper said the actions of the wounded deputy, who was working the doorway of the courthouse when he saw Dennis Marx drive up, likely saved many lives. “It would be a guess to think how many lives he saved had he not engaged him right there,” Piper said. “Mr. Marx’s intention was to get inside that front door and to take hostages.”

12:39 p.m. - Suspect Dennis Marx had not been living in his house for 10 days. Deputies are searching that house now for explosives and booby traps. Sheriff Duane Piper said Marx “was known to us before. Quite a few things are under investigation right now.” He said many of the explosives that Marx was carrying were homemade. “He had been planning it for a while,” Piper said.

12:36 p.m. - Piper said suspect Marx was armed with multiple explosives and lots of ammunition on himself and inside the car. He also had water, supplies and “zip-tie” restraining devices. “He came for the purpose of occupying the courthouse,” the sheriff said.

12:21 p.m. - A law enforcement official familiar with the situation said explosives are suspected because Marx is a “sovereign citizen” well-known to local authorities. They are concerned about explosives because sovereign citizens are known to be involved with explosives.

12:15 p.m. - The sheriff has confirmed to Channel 2 that the suspect is Dennis Marx. The station reports that Marx has identified himself as a sovereign citizen, part of an anti-govenment group that has been tied to violent attacks on law enforcement around the country. He was due in court today to plead out on drug and weapons charges.

Glenn Beck:
Administration Announces Domestic Terror Task Force Revival

“This regime is now justifiably terrified that attempts to overthrow them and re-establish our constitutional government and the rule of law may occur. A nazi/Stalin regime like rule is about to begin where people will be arrested and detained without evidence but on suspicion alone. Unlike Germany, there are no allies to come to our rescue to stop it.”

15 Justanotherhuman  Jun 6, 2014 10:41:23am

So, Marx was “known” to local law enforcement? Did he have a record? If so, was he considered dangerous or just a “kook”? And why was he allowed bail on drug and weapons charges?

These people seem to be tolerated and given a wide berth until there is a fatality or several. When is LE, even those officers who might see their “point”, i.e. “sovereign citizen”, going to stop giving them so much latitude?

People like Beck are frigging opportunist cowards though. Where was Glenn’s “concern” for an all too powerful government when the Bush administration signed the Patriot Act into law, where was he when the NSA had virtually no oversight over it, or when the Bush administration was going after domestic terrorists too. Seems to me that the right only worries about “the big bad federal government” when a Democrat resides at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. I mean these guys can’t even get their paranoia consistent. Glenn claims to hate the Nazis and I do believe him but yet he flips his shit that the administration is going after real Neo-Nazi groups.

These clowns are really comfortable with the concept of destroying the village in order to save the village.

The crazy thing is, the whole basis of Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, etc is that the GOVERNED get to determine what kind of GOVERNMENT they have - ALL OF the governed, not just a small chunk. That small chunk does not get to require the rest of us to consent to THEIR idea of government.

But that aside, I think it’s precious how they fall for Putin’s blatant photo-ops that would make Stalin jealous and think “Sigh, that’s the kind of leader I want.” Putin’s a little coward and it shows because he’s too chicken shit to tolerate real dissent in his country.

See, if you’re a wingnut, you have to learn to compartmentalize to avoid uncontrollable headaches from the cognitive dissonance:

One one hand, Obama was born in Kenya, so he’s not REALLY a citizen. On the other, Obama is really the son of Malcolm X, so he’s really a citizen, but he’s a born Radical!

One one hand, Obama’s an incompetent boob who couldn’t tie his shoes without blowing it. On the other, he’s managed to build hundreds of FEMA camps without anyone being able to find them or prove it.

On the one hand, Obama’s a Muslim. On the other, he attended a Christian church for years, where Jeremiah Wright made him a racist.

On the one hand, Obama’s a dictator who rules with an iron fist. On the other hand, he’s a weakling that even Lichtenstein isn’t afraid of.

On the one hand, saying he’d go after ObL in Pakistan was irresponsible treatment of our ally. On the other, Hillary Clinton and the Joint Chiefs of Staff had to overrule him to have troops go into Pakistan and take out ObL.

On the one hand, he’s violating the Constitution by killing American citizens with drones, even if they are part of AQ. On the other, he refuses to kill terrorists.

The head of the Senate Intelligence Committee isn’t buying the Obama administration’s excuse for why it kept her and Congress in the dark about the prisoner swap for Bowe Bergdahl. Sen. To me, it’s simple. The WH wanted this secret since they knew that someone would leak this and possibly get Bergdahl moved or forbid killed. They kept it under wraps knowing that fact. So, they decide to finally do it and they do succeed with their plan and the Congress is all up in arms because Obama didn’t inform them. I’d too prefer a more open WH but at the same time, I’d prefer an at least functionable Congress that hasn’t been passing pointless repeals of ACA the past two years with its signer in the WH and one that didn’t shut down over that.

Personally, I think the White House decided to get the man back and weather the storm that was kicked up afterward. If there are Democrats who cannot be mollified by the need for secrecy in this swap, then perhaps it’s because they’re less worried about the safety of this man’s life and more about the political fallout they personally will be subject to if they don’t make a lot of negative noise.

Well I can see I picked a good day to drive up to the western corner of GA to pick up The Son for the weekend. This could possibly explain the large number of GA State Patrol cars I saw all over the place today, you usually only see them on I-75 in that number, I was on a state route, 2 lane highway headed north and west and they were everywhere. Glad we’re home now, geesh.

Forsyth county used to be famous for the fact that only white people lived there for several generations. Oprah Winfrey did one of her talk shows there about the topic back in the 80s I think. At one point is was named the wealthiest county in GA, not that long ago, with an average household income in the 80K range if I remember right. I haven’t been over there in ages, it used to be sort of rural back when I lived on that end of Metro Atlanta.

I also see Atty Gen Holder has decided to heed the warnings in the report about domestic terrorism being on the rise, the report that made the wingnuts poop themselves. GOOD. Fits in with this topic quite well.

Steele Addresses GOP Faithful
Karen Bossick | info@idgop.org

SUN VALLEY — Government should fear its constituents, the head of the Republican party told a couple hundred party faithful Friday night at Sun Valleyâ€TMs River Run lodge.

“If our government leaders screw it up, you should fire them. That’s why government should fear you — because you have the power to fire them. And Iâ€TMm going to ask you to start by firing Nancy Pelosi. I’m going to ask you to fire Harry Reid. Iâ€TMm going to ask you to fire Henry Waxman and Barbara Boxer,” said Michael Steele, the chairman of the Republican National Committee.

Red, white and blue bunting was draped over the railing and piles of Tootsie Rolls wrapped in red, white and blue were placed on each table as Steele took the podium.

Earlier in the evening the Republicans had acknowledged Hailey soldier Bowe Bergdahl, who was captured by the Taliban a year ago, with an empty chair on which was draped a MIA flag. A rose sat on the table, a reminder that some American servicemen have paid the supreme sacrifice. A slice of lemon represented the bitter taste. And a candle signified hope that captured soldiers like Bergdahl would find their way home.

Bowe’s father, Bob Bergdahl, said that he and his wife Jani had experienced a lot of support, even from Muslims and Hindus, as they prayed for their sonâ€TMs release. He commended a secret organization of local women who had tied yellow ribbons around trees and fences throughout the valley.

“My wife knows that she’s not alone every time she sees a yellow ribbon,” he said.

Idaho U.S. Sen. Jim Risch acknowledged that Bergdahl was a high priority for the U.S. government. But, he added, on May 12 the U.S. government ran out of money and is now operating on $1.4 trillion borrowed from China.

“This is a really serious situation,” he said. “The Taliban can hurt us but they canâ€TMt destroy us.”

Living beyond its means could, however, destroy the country, he said. Steele, who spoke in a slow, considered manner, told the crowd that they had the opportunity to engage a young generation that has been unable to find jobs as he urged them to retire Idaho Congressman Walt Minnick, a Democrat.

“The GOP — the Grand Old Party — is no longer your mother and father’s party. It’s yours,” he said.

Really, the only thing I think the president hasn’t done right here is rightly call out the Republicans in Congress for the shitheads they are when it comes to this. They wanted Obama to do all he could as CoC to get Sgt. Bergdahl released and Obama did just that. And then they claim that he gave up too much (which by the way pales in comparison to what the Israelis have done for terrorists who operate literally in their own nation’s backyard) or started to insult the character of the solider himself. I might understand more of the criticisms of Obama if he had a rational bunch of human beings as his Congressional opposition but instead he has people who figuratively and literally wear tea-bags on their ears as his main opposition in Congress.

First off, I don’t want my government to fear me-I want it to represent me and work collaboratively with me and others to improve life for people in general (including myself, of course.)

Second, I don’t think they can ‘fire’ Waxman because he’s retiring.

What a horrible scary world some people must live in. And I’m not talking about people who live in truly scary situations-dangerous inner city neighborhoods, nasty health problems and insufficient medical care-just the ones who are afraid the ravening hordes that they’ve never actually seen are coming for them.

If I were President, and Sgt. Bergdahl’s release were on my watch, my presidential response to the endless BS coming from the RWNJ’s would be simple and succinct.

“We are the United States of America, and we don’t leave our men behind, regardless of circumstances. And if you don’t like that, you can go straight to Hell, or better yet, get the fuck out of the United States, because no sane American wants you here anymore.”

“My fellow Americans,

When we send American servicemen into harms way, you can be damned sure we’re going to do whatever we have to do to bring them home again.

Good night.”

I would have skipped the Rose Garden announcement and issued a press release, private meeting with the family. I would have avoid the “honor and distinction” comments about his service to some much more vague. The only tough call for me would be the comments about his health and threats to his safety if leaked. I suspect those are more political cover for the legal grey area, I don’t blame them for not wanting to notify congress so a little bit of ass covering is to be expected.

You realize that, with the vultures we have in the press, that would have only made things worse, right? Instead of bitching about “honor and distinction,” we’d have bitching that the White House is trying to hide something.

“Why,” they’d ask, “would the President be playing things low-key if they believed Bergdahl’s service was anything but honorable? Is it perhaps because they have access to the results of the first investigation and already know he’s a deserter? That they gave away the ‘worst of the worst’ for a guy who didn’t deserve to come home? Is that why they didn’t let Congress know?”

Have you ever given any thought to the fact that they may have done the public announcement to increase military morale? So those service members know that they are ever captured as Bergdahl was that the president and his advisers would do all they can do to get them out. Your nit over the honor and distinction I think is silly too, I think it’s only right to say that someone who has spent the past five years as a captive of the Taliban and at that tried to escape into hostile territory with that has served with honor. Really, the WH could have done all you suggested and there would still be a bunch of bs about what the WH did wrong. I really don’t think the WH did anything really wrong here.

Acting as though there is anything at all Obama can do that won’t get him immediately viciously attacked by the right-wing media, any presentation, any approach, makes you look either really stupid or hopelessly naive.

Here we have an example where, just days before, right-wingers were attacking Obama over Bergdahl’s continued capture, where McCain and others had voiced support for possible prisoner exchange, and within hours of the release, those same right-wingers are in a frenzy of attack.

Again, playing stupid has the side effect of making you look stupid. Your fussy “If they’d managed expectations” harrumphing just makes you look clueless as fuck.

179 HappyWarrior  Jun 6, 2014 12:12:54pm

But i guess we shouldn’t say that guys who have spent a time under Taliban captive longer than our whole time involved in WWII didn’t serve with honor because some RWNJ may take exception to them saying that. Sigh, I give up. They weren’t making Bergdahl out to be Sgt. York or Audie Murphy but they did correctly point out that he did serve honorably.

I’ve read stories in recent days about how, when the initial news of his return was announced, there were bouts of celebration in the military. That, in contrast to the atmosphere that has since been promoted by the “liberal” media, many were ecstatic that the only US POW still in enemy hands had been released and was coming home.

The delusion that there is anything that the WH could have done to change the RW response - and subsequently the focus on criticizing them instead of the fucking lack of human decency on full display in the press - is sadly predictable, if one’s goal is to bemoan all the mistakes that Obama is making all the time everywhere.

I will say this though and this is no indictment of Bob’s beliefs but had Bowe been released under a Republican president, I can guarantee that the same right wing noise machine that now tries to attack his character would be trying to make him out to be a great American. And I guess that’s what is said. Bob Bergdahl is a father who experienced what every father who sends his son to war probably fears most even more so than hearing that his son was KIA. I’m glad to have a president that sees our military servicemembers as human beings with families.

“In terms of harassment, investigators determined through interviews with employees that Babauta made female workers feel uncomfortable with some of his comments.

“According to the report, Babauta told one woman had a “hot ass” after sitting in her chair. He also appeared to be fixated on high heels, saying women should wear heels instead of flats, complimenting a female intern for wearing “sexy shoes” and saying women should keep “hooker” footwear around the office, the report said.

“Babauta also asked a deputy director to prepare a PowerPoint presentation for a speech at his daughter’s school about public service, and he had an employee pick up his girlfriend at an airport and drive them around for the weekend, among other questionable uses of government personnel, according to the report.” More

What I didn’t know for the longest time re: D-Day was about just how many different national groups took part. Not merely Americans, Brits, and Canadians but also Free French, Polish, and many others too. My respect and thanks to all of them.

To all the lovers of weird and macabre I can recommend this quirky psychological horror flick by a Czech director Jan Svankmajer:
Vimeo
It is based on a story by Poe but interweaves many other elements, including S.’s signature creepy animation.

I just came back in from a meeting and saw the Obama/Putin Vine. I think Putin doesn’t look so much uncomfortable - the little guy looks intimidated.

Could that be because it’s coming out that the Bergdahl’s aren’t Democrats? Hmm? God these people are pathetic, not the Bergdahl’s, the idiot denizens of outer Wingnuttia and their Flying Monkey Corps.

I totally expect the next line of attack to be that Obama didn’t do enough to get him out because they’re not Democrats. I mean if they can switch gears once, why not again?

bergdahl nearly absent from today’s freeptalk

No new “revelations” about the man, and the whole matter of the prisoner swap just isn’t as sexy when you realize that impeaching a president for the return of a POW would be a case of blowing off one’s own foot with a howitzer.

Perhaps Putin has come to the realization that he badly underestimated President Obama, and that his gambit in Ukraine is turning into a debacle that he doesn’t know how to extricate himself from.

When I saw that little video snippet, I could imagine Putin saying, “Hey….yeah, I sorta fucked up that whole Ukraine thing. Seriously….it’s starting to hurt my economy. Think you could find your way to doing me a solid?”
