Rand Paul: “Let’s Trade 5 Democrats to the Taliban”

Great moments in Republican rebranding, continued
Wingnuts • Views: 36,795

Here’s Senator Rand Paul speaking at the Republican Party of Texas state convention today, then proudly broadcasting his “joke” over Twitter. Because there’s nothing funnier than sending Democrats to be killed by the Taliban, is there? I’m sure it brought the house down.

Rand Paul, you may recall, has been presenting himself lately as the GOP’s leading moderate, reaching out to minorities and others alienated by the total derangement of the Republican Party.

And then he does this. Who could ever have predicted: Rand Paul, Libertarian Extremist in Moderate’s Clothing.

UPDATE at 6/6/14 2:12:03 pm

But wait — there’s more! Sen. Paul also claimed exclusive ownership of the Bill of Rights for the GOP:

And… wait for it… BENGHAZI.

UPDATE at 6/6/14 2:18:55 pm

From LGF commenter Lidane:

It’s worth noting that the #RPTCON14 hashtag Rand Paul is using is for the Texas GOP convention. The very same Texas GOP convention whose platform includes:

Ending the direct election of Senators
Repealing the Voting Rights Act
Ending all Motor Voter laws
Ending the Fed
Ending the TSA, the Department of Energy and the Department of Education
Withdrawing from the UN
Agenda 21
Creationism in public schools
AGW denial
CURE TEH GHEY conversion therapy
Repealing all hate crimes laws
Banning the morning after pill
Nullifying all federal gun laws

They’re also anti-vaccination. Fun times.

So yeah, they’re going to love Rand’s tweet here. It’s what the party stands for.

Lots of soldiers are Democrats.

I mean, this statement is just horrific and stupid and awful no matter what, but if you want to trade Democrats to the Taliban there’s plenty over there serving in the military.

What a fucker.

Stay classy Dr. Paul!

It is an unbelievable, horrible shame that Mitch Freakin’ McConnell is the least offensive senator from Kentucky.

6 Zamb  Jun 6, 2014 1:17:19pm

Haha because democrats don’t count as real people. Seriously democracy isn’t going to work when one side fantasizes about brutally torturing and killing the other.

7 Targetpractice  Jun 6, 2014 1:17:19pm

Isn’t he also supposedly selling himself as “mature” and less prone to the sorts of extremist BS that guys like Cruz are prone to?

No, what’s unbelievable is he’s not even the worst GOP Senator. I mean he’s awful don’t get me wrong but Cruz may be worse and if McDaniel wins that run off and GE would be worse too and had Bevin won in Kentucky, he’d probably be worse too.

No doubt Rand buys into the wingnut belief that all those serving in uniform are Republicans because they know that the GOP will always take care of them, both in war and in peace.

Hey Senator Paul; I’ve got a better idea.

Next time, we ship off Limbaugh, Hannity, Coulter, Sen. Cruz and Representative Gohmert.

Hell, we’ll even throw in Pam Geller and Robert Spencer, just because us Americans are cool like that.

Whaddaya say to that idea, Senator?

That or the usual non-apology apology where he claims he apologizes for anyone who was offended by his “sense of humor” and that the outrage over this is because of “political correctness.” Or yeah some staffer that was just doing Rand’s orders gets canned.

Why is Rand Paul at the Republican Party of Texas state convention anyways?

22 GeneJockey  Jun 6, 2014 1:21:30pm

OTOH, it’ll be a nice question to ask at any Presidential debate:

“So, Senator Paul - you equate the Democratic Party with the Taliban? You really hold 40% of your fellow Americans in lower esteem than a terrorist organization?”

Of course, it’d have to be in the debates for the General, since in the Primaries he’d get a rousing cheer.

Heh, yeah, I’m guessing Rand is still unaware of that little detail at the moment. It’s gonna be fun watching him trying to squirm out of it when he realizes the Bergdhals were supporters of his dad.

BTW, in case anyone missed it, here’s the NY Times story Sam Stein was referring to in his tweet:

Both Mr. Bergdahl and his wife, Jani, said they were upset that although they had had good relations with the State Department and the Pentagon during the three years that their son has been missing, they had never heard from President Obama. The two are Ron Paul supporters and have turned increasingly against the war in Afghanistan, although they support the president’s plan not to withdraw most American troops until 2014.

“He has never contacted us,” Jani Bergdahl said about Mr. Obama. “We haven’t gotten a Hallmark card, we haven’t gotten a note signed by an aide, nothing. Is it because he thinks we’re not Democrats?” […]

Heh, yeah, I’m guessing Rand is still unaware of that little detail at the moment. It’s gonna be fun watching him trying to squirm out of it when he realizes the Bergdhals were supporters of his dad.

That’s true that Jeb isn’t exactly Mr. Charisma. But he doesn’t need to be. All he needs to do is let the wingnuts devour each other in the primaries, which they will….that’s all but guaranteed.

Last man standing wins.

This is true, but I truly cannot imagine Jeb facing as weak a crazyright pu-pu platter as Romney did. I mean, I can’t name any name that would be worth a gas station ham sandwich, but Herman Cain? Michelle Bachmann!?

I can’t imagine such a passionately unappealing and inept group of competitors two cycles in a row.

Romney’s general election campaign in 2012 was the worst I’ve ever seen. IIRC the stats actually showed his appearances in states tended to be followed by a decrease in his support in those states.

As entertaining as that was, it pretty much means that Romney’s 2012 performance is a floor below which any GOP candidate will not likely fall in the next 1-2 cycles (i.e., before demographics really hammers the GOP).

Heh. I could see Cruz or Gohmert, maybe Gowdy, reaching for the brass ring this time around. Yes, 2012 was a glorious festival of ham-fisted stupid. Romney was genuinely fortunate to have faced such utterly incompetent foes.

I do like him as an actor, and there are times when his activism agrees with mine; he was the executive producer of a TV documentary called “Witch Hunt”, about the Bakersfield Satanic ritual abuse case of the early 1980s, in which three dozen people were railroaded into prison because of a DA wanting to look like a badass. Mr. Penn also narrated the documentary.

re: #126 Charles Johnson

The conclusion will get the Snowjob fans into a tizzy:

III. THE MYTHS IN ONE BIG BUNDLE

Edward Snowden heard the testimony of James Clapper and knew that the NSA Director was lying and hiding a massive and unconstitutional surveillance of millions of Americans from Congress. Leaping into action, he did everything that the whistleblower laws and regulations allowed him to do to alert the Government, but they took no notice, so, instead of being tied up and put into the trunk of a big black Government Lincoln—this happens to all whistleblowers—he bravely fled to China and then Russia, taking only those documents necessary to expose the Orwellian nightmare that is our lives being watched by Big Brother in everything that we do.

IV. THE MYTHS (EXPOSED) IN ONE BIG BUNDLE

Edward Snowden wanted to turn on the NSA for years. He chose NSA Director James Clapper as a convenient scapegoat, either knowing that Congress was fully informed about the NSA metadata program or being ignorant of that fact. Glenn Greenwald either told Snowden about the Supreme Court case allowing the Government to use telephone metadata, or he decided not to tell him because Story!, or they were both ignorant of the 35-year-old Supreme Court case that made it constitutional for the Government to do what it was doing. Although certainly capable of unconstitutional spying on Americans, the reality is that, when the curtain was unexpectedly pulled aside, the Government was going about its business balancing privacy with national security, implementing a three-tiered oversight mechanism that involves the Executive, Judicial and Legislative branches, as well as oversight from the media and whistleblowers, and neither Greenwald nor Snowden could show a single constitutional violation even with all those documents and a year to do it in. Thousands of Americans safely become whistleblowers every year, following the prescribed statutory mechanisms and providing a huge benefit to the Government. Oh, and the NSA doesn’t care to surveil the LOLCats on your Facebook page.

Judge overturns state’s gay marriage ban

U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb in Madison Friday overturned Wisconsin’s gay marriage ban, striking down an amendment to the state constitution approved overwhelmingly by voters in 2006.

Crabb did not stay her ruling but also did not immediately issue an order blocking the enforcement of the order, leaving it for the moment unclear whether couples could immediately marry in the courthouses of Wisconsin.

Instead, Crabb asked the gay couples who had sued over the ban to describe by June 16 exactly what they wanted the judge to block with respect to the enforcement of the law. She said she would then address whether to stay her decision while the matter is on appeal.

Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen, a Republican, said that “current law remains in force” in Wisconsin and he would appeal the decision.

Persons awarded an OTH characterization of service: are not entitled to retain their uniforms or wear them home (although they may be furnished civilian clothing at a cost of not more than $50); must accept transportation in kind to their homes; are subject to recoupment of any reenlistment bonus they may have received; are not eligible for notice of discharge to employers (which may affect unemployment benefits); and, do not receive mileage fees from the place of discharge to their home of record.

It is generally believed that an OTH Discharge will render an individual ineligible for all VA Benefits. This is not necessarily so. The Department of Veterans Affairs will make its own determination with respect as to whether the OTH was based on conditions which would forfeit any or all VA benefits. Most veterans’ benefits will be forfeited if that determination is adverse to the former service-member, such as when based on the following circumstances: (1) Desertion; (2) escape prior to trial by general court-martial; (3) conscientious objector who refuses to perform military duties, wear the uniform, or comply with lawful orders of competent military authorities; (4) willful or persistent misconduct; (5) offense(s) involving moral turpitude; (6) mutiny or spying; or (7) homosexual acts involving aggravating circumstances.

Rand wanted to trade 5 Dems for Tamoorhessi, the guy who drove into Mexico with his guns. He’s not a POW like Bergdahl was. He doesn’t need a swap to be freed, he needs to serve his sentence (once they give him one) and to depend on the diplomatic efforts of his country to convince the Mexicans to let him come home early.

It does not help Tamoorhessi to have wingnuts doing their damnedest to piss off everyone in the administration.

Anything else is collateral damage as long as they could keep the Kenyan Ursuprer from being seen as Presidential. Both sides in the furor over the Bergdahl case offer simplistic answers to the growing problem of abductions. Those who say the release of the five prisoners sets no precedent are downplaying the scope of this propaganda coup for the Taliban. Other militants around the globe will likely emulate them.

At the same time, the argument that refusing to pay ransom or release prisoners will end all kidnappings is wishful thinking. Given the delusions of my captors, jihadists will remain convinced for years, if not decades, that secret ransoms are being paid.

The real solution would require a massive and difficult long-term effort to reduce the world’s pockets of ungoverned spaces. The Taliban who held both Bergdahl and I felt no pressure to reduce their demand because they had a safe haven in the mountains of Pakistan.

Colombia curbed kidnappings by steadily eliminating the areas controlled by rebels. Kidnappings have been reduced in Somalia as African Union forces have gained greater control of the country. In the Philippines, abductions have slowed as the militant group Abu Sayyaf lost territory in the south.

Doing the same thing in Pakistan’s tribal areas, Syria and the Sahel is a staggering task. But setting that as the international community’s common long-term goal is far more constructive than demonizing a hostage and his family.

The focus of our anger should be the kidnappers. They are the problem, not hostages, their families, or a government that meets a demand.

re: #192 Dr Lizardo

If I’m not mistaken, “Other Than Honorable” discharge isn’t a good thing.

The third kind of discharge. Not good but not horrible.

Other Than Honorable (OTH)[edit]
An OTH is a form of administrative discharge. This type of discharge represents a departure from the conduct and performance expected of all military members. It can also be given as the result of certain civil hearings.

Recipients of OTH discharges are barred from reenlisting into any component of the Armed Forces (including the reserves), and are normally barred from joining the Army National Guard or Air National Guard. If the veteran receives at least one Honorable discharge prior to reenlisting he will be able to enroll in VA Healthcare using that period of enlistment, and the current OTH discharge will not bar him from health care services. The VA will submit Form 7131 (Information Exchange Between VA Regional Offices and Medical Facilities) if the veteran has less than one honorable discharge to decide if the service was honorable or dishonorable for VA purposes.

Veterans with an OTH discharge who qualify for VA Healthcare are eligible to submit claims for disability compensation pay, participation in educational, volunteer, and vocational rehabilitation programs. Other Than Honorable recipients are eligible for Montgomery GI Bill benefits if they have completed at least one honorable discharge, but are excluded from all Post 9/11 GI Bill Benefits.

Is ‘Long Island Medium’ Fake?

The actual article title is currently:

Is Theresa Caputo A Fake? ‘Long Island Medium’ Star Bashed By Investigator

Its at IBT, a brand by the same private company that bought out Newsweek.

The opening paragraph:

Theresa Caputo’s reality series “Long Island Medium” has consistently raked in high ratings for the TLC network since its 2011 debut but that hasn’t stopped some viewers from speculating that the celebrity medium’s ability to talk with the deceased may be fraudulent. After five seasons of air-time, one investigator is now stepping forward to call the reality-TV star’s gift a hoax.

He was okay with treating fellow humans like property to be bought and sold; with subsequently treating them as second class citizens; with the genocide of the original inhabitants of the land, then stuffing the ones who survived into the least desirable places we could find; overthrowing democratic governments around the world in favor of friendly dictators - all that, He was fine with.

If you’re at all interested in tomorrows horse race, there is an exquisite piece up at Sports Illustrated…

In nearly every corner of century-old Belmont Park, framed by peeling paint, leaky roofs and the inescapable feel of time standing still (though not always in a good way), there are ghosts of Triple Crowns attempted, but not won. Of history broached, but not made. Of legends prepared, only to be dismantled in 21/2 deflating minutes. Belmont is both old and timeless, one of those places in American sports to which we return once a year and where the backdrop of the photo is always the same, even if the faces are not. Augusta is like this, and so is Flushing Meadow, only a few miles away from Belmont Park. So are Daytona and Indianapolis. And Louisville, of course. They are places where a sport and a culture gather for renewal, and where greatness is validated in the crucible of a time-honored contest. Or in the case of the Belmont Stakes, where greatness is often denied.

You know, this anniversary of D-Day jogged my memory about a lesson I did four years ago. The lesson (conversational English with advanced students) was about violence and sexuality in films. This was an intensive class, four hours long per day.

The three young ladies were all horror genre aficianados, and they all maintained rather staunchly that violence in films was not a problem for them.

They changed their minds after the first 30 minutes of Saving Private Ryan, and for those who’ve seen that film, you know damned well what I’m referring to. The opening sequence depicting the Omaha Beach landing is quite possibly one of the most horrific sequences of carnage ever put on the silver screen.

Eva was watching it with her hands over her face, peering out through her fingers, muttering to herself in Czech, “I’m think I’m going to vomit.” Pavla was turning an interesting shade of green, and Jana was sitting there with her mouth open and tears streaming down her face.

When the movie was finished, their opinion about how violence in films was “funny” or “darkly humorous” had changed quite a bit.

It’s a pity that the rest of SPR was so annoyingly average. Still, for putting that sequence up there on the big screen, they earned the kudos that they get. It’s still not “real” in an exact sense but it’s as close as we’ve ever gotten with perhaps only one exception - the 1930 version of “All Quiet On The Western Front”. I do know one old man who after watching it said the only thing missing was the stink - of blood, shit, puke & fear.

Most likely. It’s one thing if it’s a film like Hostel, where the violence is heavy, but almost cartoonish in nature, like a gory Tom & jerry cartoon. The violence in Saving Private Ryan is depicted in a grimly realistic way. Add to that the historicity of the actual event, and it packs one hell of a punch.

My uncle Bob was in the Pacific Theater on the battleship USS-South Dakota, aboard which was Lieutenant Sargent Shriver, which Bob (a bedrock socialist union guy who was chomping at the bit to fight the Axis powers) thought was funny since Shriver had been a founding member of the isolationist America First Committee. But Bob always said Shriver was a fair and square guy.

Evening Lizardim from the rainy, stormy wild north country. A quick shower also doused my hopes of a transmission flush tonight; for alas, I have no hoses that I can fit to the oil lines. So it shall be a project for the weekend instead, which is OK by me. How go things among the lizardfolk?

Holy Shit. Taffy 3. That was probably the wildest battle of WWII. A handful of destroyers, destroyer escorts & escort carriers turned back the most powerful IJN fleet left at that time. She was the only carrier to damage an enemy ship with gunfire, IIRC.

My dad’s dad served in France. I have no idea about his service record (aside from being discharged as “a bit of a brawler”), so I don’t know if he was on the beaches.

My great uncles (grandma’s brothers - is that a great uncle?) were in the pacific. All I know is they would never talk about it and the family would never buy anything made in Japan.

Apropos of something, a late lamented pal of mine who was a native San Franciscan once told me that on the day Pearl Harbor was attacked, he and his two brothers got together over many drinks and pondered about which service they should join that would have the least chance of getting them killed. They chose the Coast Guard, thinking they’d be safely guarding the coast. So they joined up, and wouldn’t you know it, but within a couple of months they were all shipped off to the Pacific. Fortunately, they all made it out alive.

For about 65 years I knew almost nothing about my father and almost everything I knew was wrong. Finally the Internet and search engines caught up, and I know a tremendous amount about his service, which lasted 2 1/2 missions. Later, I found a book that is devoted entirely to Mission 376—a 1300 bomber raid that contains the only photos I have seen of him.

You soldiers in the ranks — you Volunteers,

I always think of Whitman on military anniversaries. As a nurse, he saw and knew it all, and as a poet he said it better than anyone.
