I think that Vietnam was the first war that the US got ‘real time’ coverage on, and reporters who weren’t scrubbed or affiliated by the military or some major media organization.

The internet is still reeling from the discovery of the Heartbleed vulnerability, a software flaw exposed in April that broke most implementations of the widely used encryption protocol SSL. Now, before Heartbleed has even fully healed, another major bug has ripped off the scab.

On Thursday, the OpenSSL Foundation published an advisory warning to users to update their SSL yet again, this time to fix a previously unknown but more than decade-old bug in the software that allows any network eavesdropper to strip away its encryption. The non-profit foundation, whose encryption is used by the majority of the Web’s SSL servers, issued a patch and advised sites that use its software to upgrade immediately.

I remember watching the news and seeing faces of the dead every evening. Every family pretty much knew someone who was there, either a family member or a friend’s family member. The pictures of everyone who had been killed that week were in the Sunday paper. The war ended about the time I started high school or a bit after. It wasn’t kept from us like this last mess was. I think that’s been a big thing and helped divide us more in a lot of ways.

If we’re going to be involved in war then we should also have to see the realities of those decisions. Our Stupid Media sucks, it never should have got this far off the rails.

I grew up in a North Philly neighborhood (Fairhill) with plenty of Europeans who crawled from that carnage. One of my best friends father was Ukrainian and his mother was from the Netherlands. They found each other and raised a family here. Two sons. Nothing was ever spoken. A few grocers had the tattoos of the death camps. One pretzel vendor was the saddest man I have yet to meet. My life was filled with those who came from and came back. It was not that long ago when I was little. And it was crazy. Only in hindsight did I see the big picture.

That is one of my favourite episodes of that series. They did such a good job of showing how the battle went. That was The Alamo of naval battles, except this time the badly outnumbered force won.

It’s all just some lite fluffly opinions (whining) about Obama’s FP by Christopher Dickey. Finally at the end he gets to “what the D-Day veteran told Obama,”

One of the interesting things about the Battle of Leyte Gulf is that Kurita’s force essentially was on the receiving end of what IJN doctrine had been for the lead in to the desired “decisive battle”. As their battleship/cruiser task force advanced on the Philippines it was detected, and then attacked and attrition-ed by submarine and air attack. Which included Kurita himself being fished out of the water once since his initial flagship (a cruiser) was sunk by a submarine.

I think one of the women died recently in prison from cancer, after being denied “compassionate early release.” One Manson family member was paroled recently, but he wasn’t at either the Tate or LaBianca murder scenes.

I only heard some of my grandfather’s stories about Korea once. He never talked about Vietnam (he worked intel, some of it is apparently still classified).

I wish he was still around and I could ask more.

I didn’t discover that he’d gotten his associate’s degree until just this past Christmas. My dad hadn’t known either. Grandpa died before I got married over 3.5 years ago.

One of my father’s deals was being on the boat to Hawaii and he was an MP. All day long was spent standing in line waiting for your bologna sandwich unless you were a MP which meant you could go to the front of the line for your bologna sandwich.

My maternal Grandfather lied about his age after Pearl Harbor and joined the Army at 15, but by the time they found out, he had already made Sgt and had been fighting in the Pacific for a few months already. He ended up being a flamethrower man.

I learned this all from other relatives. He never talked about it.

I’m back to it to finish watching it again. That was the US Navy’s single finest moment in 200 years of glory.

I’ve never had bags searched, nothing past the standard questions when you’re going through the passport spots.

My dad has told me about the time he did get searched - but he was a single guy in his 20s coming back from visiting his parents in Turkey in the 70s. (My grandparents were stationed over there at that point.)

It was really nice to be able to arrive at the airport like normal, get our bags, and go find the car. I can’t sleep on planes. This has the predictable result after a 12 hour flight.

Even in old age, some are still in denial. I found this interesting story. There were actually about 30 people in the Manson “family” and some we’ve never even heard of, well, I’d never heard of Catherine Share until now, and I lived through it, but it was so horrible I think I tried to avoid some of the reports back then. I’m only a year older than Share and at the time was raising my 2 kids working at a full time job. She was born in 1942, adopted in CA and lived a relatively comfortable life, but she was drifting around CA (her nickname was “Gypsy”). I just cannot imagine taking the life of another, for any reason, yet these people would not have hesitated to kill for a scumbag like Manson.

Water/drain use in the entire apartment building is restricted after 9am. Main drain pipe is broken and a portion has to be replaced. Filled up all my water bottles just in case.

Just like I know now that, because one of the guys in Bergdahl’s unit has spoken up to say he never saw a note and he doesn’t immediately buy into the idea that Bowe joined the Taliban without strong evidence, that wingnuts are gonna quietly back away from the “deserter” talk. And when the Pentagon finally releases its report, they’ll only pay attention if it does decide to charge him with desertion. Otherwise it’ll be “old news” and quickly ignored.

Looks like summer has come early here in Ostrava - temps are forecast to reach 35 C (95 Fahrenheit) by Tuesday. It’s pretty nice right now; about 80 F.

Of course, as others have mentioned here before, most buildings in Central Europe - aside from the most recently constructed, or shopping centers - don’t have AC, so when it starts getting over 90 F, that’s when people start dropping, unfortunately.

(way late to this) My solution - works for me, not promising for anyone else - is that when i take a sleeping pill when I go to bed, and a plan a short midday nap the next day. The sleeping pill helps over come the “it’s not time to sleep yet” cry of the body, and the nap helps deal with the “I got up waaaay to early” reaction.

It’s been several years now so I might need more than one day to cope but that’s all I used to need using that technique.

A body found Wednesday night on Town Neck Road Beach in Sandwich was missing the head, both arms and both legs, according to authorities.

Cape & Island District Attorney Michael O’Keefe said the body was that of a black man, 6-foot to 6-foot-2, 220-230 pounds with a surgical scar on the abdomen.

Dozens killed in massacre in eastern Congo

Up to 37 people including women and children were killed in Democratic Republic of Congo’s eastern province of South Kivu on Saturday morning in an attack that the regional governor blamed on a dispute over cattle.

The victims, who included several pregnant women, had been shot, stabbed or burned inside their homes. A Reuters cameraman on the scene counted 37 bodies, some of them lying inside a village church.

Yeah, I admit I’m a little biased since I used to work at the store in Mooresville (where corp hdqtrs are). I used to get some fantastic bargains when we had “yard sales” of discontinued items. Bought 2 Stiffel all brass lamps for $15 one day—one had sold for over $100. We still have them, although we’ve changed the shades.

Whoops. That’s a pretty basic error to make in a study where you’re trying to correlate deadliness of something over time. Actually, when the authors did attempt to account for this by comparing only storms after 1979, as you might expect, any correlation between names and deadliness vanished. Ideally, to back up a claim like this, you’d want to have lots of data, and there simply haven’t been enough years of named hurricanes to get a sufficient statistical significance.

A third way: Holding down Shift-Command-4 will give you a crosshairs; use it to marquee the portion of your screen you want to capture. The resulting .png file will appear on your desktop.

Pentagon officials probing claims that eight soldiers died while looking for Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl have confirmed two troops from his unit died while the search was underway, but not while they while they were on patrol, a senior defense official told Fox News Friday.

Bergdahl was held by the Taliban for five years before being released last week in exchange for five Taliban Guantanamo detainees. Since his release, members of Bergdahl’s unit at the time of his disappearance have said he was a deserter and claimed eight men died as a result of the search for him.

The official said the two soldiers in Bergdahl’s unit who died were in a combat outpost that was attacked. The official said it was impossible to prove a link between their deaths and Bergdahl’s disappearance.

In addition, investigators have determined that some of the other eight soldiers were killed while driving a logistic delivery to the base, and likely would have been doing so regardless of the search. This whole thing continues to unravel before the eyes of wingnuts. I’ve seen more and more clamming up, now muttering that they want to wait for the Pentagon to do its investigation, as if that stopped them when they were sure that Bergdahl’s unit was unified against him.

Speaking of which, I haven’t really taken stock of just who all in his unit has been put before the cameras, but I note that two of them were guys in a leadership spot. I find myself wondering today if perhaps the negative feelings from them has to do with the brass chewing them out and then holding them responsible for Bowe falling into enemy hands.

You know, I have serious reservations about further stigmatizing people with mental illness, but if someone is throwing out all those signs AND has weapons, that’s just not going to end well. (way late to this) My solution - works for me, not promising for anyone else - is that when i take a sleeping pill when I go to bed, and a plan a short midday nap the next day. The sleeping pill helps over come the “it’s not time to sleep yet” cry of the body, and the nap helps deal with the “I got up waaaay to early” reaction.

It’s been several years now so I might need more than one day to cope but that’s all I used to need using that technique.

My system is to just stay up and tough it out until 7PM or so (Paris zone) (which is about a gazillion PM central standard time, but whatever). Wake up the next morning after 10 hours sleep or something sweet like that and it’s 5AM and you have an early start on the day but you’re not radically out of synch.

A happy twist of fate a few years back saw me in Normandy, work duties completed and free for June 5. So I made my way to Omaha beach, walked down from the cemetery to the bluffs and looked around, then back up.

The thing that struck me was how stark things must have been on the beach. Behind you is the tide coming in. In front of you are mines, wire obstacles, German machine guns, and so on. And there’s nothing for it but to either shelter behind some obstacle until the inevitable lucky shot or shell finds its way through a gap in your cover and nails you, or to make a dash for it to some better cover and better shooting vantage point. And from there, to another, and so on, until your luck runs out. Or doesn’t. And it’s a long, long ways across the beach and up the bluffs. Those who were there had to know their odds weren’t so good.

But they did it. Or, rather, after all was said and done, and so many were dead or injured, there were enough whose courage carried them forward and whose luck held.

For that day. As the war went on, everybody’s luck ran out, pretty much. Not one combat infantryman in a hundred served from D-Day right through to the end of the war. It was get killed, get captured, or get injured badly enough to require time out from the war for months—-or for good.

Everybody knew it. Mostly they stuck with it, knowing. That’s courage.
