I think that Vietnam was the first war that the US got ‘real time’ coverage on, and reporters who weren’t scrubbed or affiliated by the military or some major media organization.

Charles, have you seen this latest OpenSSL vulnerability?

Heartbleed Redux (Wired)

The internet is still reeling from the discovery of the Heartbleed vulnerability, a software flaw exposed in April that broke most implementations of the widely used encryption protocol SSL. Now, before Heartbleed has even fully healed, another major bug has ripped off the scab.

On Thursday, the OpenSSL Foundation published an advisory warning to users to update their SSL yet again, this time to fix a previously unknown but more than decade-old bug in the software that allows any network eavesdropper to strip away its encryption. The non-profit foundation, whose encryption is used by the majority of the Web’s SSL servers, issued a patch and advised sites that use its software to upgrade immediately.

Exercise Tiger - wikipedia

Exercise Tiger, or Operation Tiger, was the code name for one in a series of large-scale rehearsals for the D-Day invasion of Normandy, which took place on Slapton Sands or Slapton Beach in Devon. Coordination and communication problems resulted in friendly fire deaths during the exercise, and an Allied convoy positioning itself for the landing was attacked by E-boats of the German Navy (Kriegsmarine), resulting in the deaths of 946 American servicemen.[1][2][3] The incident was under the strictest secrecy at the time due to the impending invasion, and was only nominally reported afterward; as a result it has been called “forgotten”.

I wonder when people are going to start mistrusting Open Source (especially at a level like this)? Of course, big companies with proprietary software seem to have data security problems as well…

Re: Vietnam
I remember watching the news and seeing faces of the dead every evening. Every family pretty much knew someone who was there, either a family member or a friend’s family member. The pictures of everyone who had been killed that week were in the Sunday paper. The war ended about the time I started high school or a bit after. It wasn’t kept from us like this last mess was. I think that’s been a big thing and helped divide us more in a lot of ways.

If we’re going to be involved in war then we should also have to see the realities of those decisions. Our Stupid Media sucks, it never should have got this far off the rails.

I grew up in a North Philly neighborhood (Fairhill) with plenty of Europeans who crawled from that carnage. One of my best friends father was Ukrainian and his mother was from the Netherlands. They found each other and raised a family here. Two sons. Nothing was ever spoken. A few grocers had the tattoos of the death camps. One pretzel vendor was the saddest man I have yet to meet. My life was filled with those who came from and came back. It was not that long ago when I was little. And it was crazy. Only in hindsight did I see the big picture.

Short version. Daily Beast creates clickbait title, “What the D-Day Veteran Told Obama at the 70th Anniversary Commemoration” and only has one quote from a vet at the very end. It’s all just some lite fluffly opinions (whining) about Obama’s FP by Christopher Dickey. Finally at the end he gets to “what the D-Day veteran told Obama,”

When the ceremony was over, I made my way through the arrays of marble crosses to the stage and to the man in the blue hat who had taken Obama’s hand.

His name, it turns out, is Irving Smolens, and he was only 19 when he took part in the Normandy landing. Afterward he spent much of his life as a buyer of women’s and children’s clothing in Massachusetts, leading a quiet, peaceful life with his family.

“What did you say to Obama?” I asked him.

“I thanked him for keeping us out of war,” said Smolens.

I’d be perfectly willing to trade Hannity for a half eaten cheese sandwich.

Wow!!!! Talk about throwing a Welterweight into the ring with a Super-Heavy. TF Taffy 3 sure were punching above their weight class that day, and some major tactical errors were made by the Japanese

Thank you….

The Japanese were pretty weary by that point. I think Kurita’s spirit was pretty much broken. At that point the tenacious resistance Taffy 3 put up just pushed him to the point of retreat.

I recall reading that when the Johnston went down the captain of one of the Japanese ships bowed as it went under. They deserved it. Unparalleled courage.

I was more shocked at her tweet calling Bowe a deserter and going off on Bob’s beard.

That New Republic piece I tweeted [above: #90] is kind of disturbing. It’s disturbing to me because there are folks that are being predatory with people’s minds. They’re preying on base fears and prejudices, doing hardly any work doing it, and making a lot of money. Our system in the US allows this, and it makes me ill thinking about it.

Capitol Feud: A 12-Year-Old Is the Fodder

The critics accused Graeme’s father, Halsey, a self-employed woodworker, of choosing not to provide insurance for his family of six, even though he owned his own business. They pointed out that Graeme attends an expensive private school. And they asserted that the family’s home had undergone extensive remodeling, and that its market value could exceed $400,000.

One critic, in an e-mail message to Graeme’s mother, Bonnie, warned: “Lie down with dogs, and expect to get fleas.” As it turns out, the Frosts say, Graeme attends the private school on scholarship. The business that the critics said Mr. Frost owned was dissolved in 1999. The family’s home, in the modest Butchers Hill neighborhood of Baltimore, was bought for $55,000 in 1990 and is now worth about $260,000, according to public records. And, for the record, the Frosts say, their kitchen counters are concrete.

One of the interesting things about the Battle of Leyte Gulf is that Kurita’s force essentially was on the receiving end of what IJN doctrine had been for the lead in to the desired “decisive battle”. As their battleship/cruiser task force advanced on the Philippines it was detected, and then attacked and attrition-ed by submarine and air attack. Which included Kurita himself being fished out of the water once since his initial flagship (a cruiser) was sunk by a submarine.

No. Daily Beast/Newsweek.

Her tweets were extremely Fox Newsy and strange.

On September 11, 2013, Editor-in-Chief Tina Brown announced her departure. Initial reports of her contract not being renewed[53] were refuted in a statement issued by Barry Diller, IAC/InterActiveCorp’s Executive Director:

” I want to extol Tina Brown. She created the Beast in 2008 from a blank page, and from the beginning until today it has grown in circulation and brand recognition, even throughout the two unfortunate Newsweek years. If you removed the failed experiment to revive Newsweek, the story of The Daily Beast is one of excellence in reporting, in design, and in digital distribution. That to me is the lede of her tenure. That she chose, and she did, to leave the Beast, with all the attendant media judging, should not obscure her truly outstanding work as the editor and creator over the last five years at The Daily Beast.[54] “

Brown’s resignation also caused much speculation in the media in regard to the future of the website. This uncertainty was promptly addressed in a memo to staffers by interim CEO Rhona Murphy, “The Daily Beast is not for sale and is not closing. IAC has approved in concept the operating budget for 2014.”[54] In the words of executive editor John Avlon, “The Daily Beast roars on.”

*Took a NL team and a AL team to the World Series
*As a player, coach, or manager, Berra appeared in 21 World Series
*According to the win shares formula developed by sabermetrician Bill James, Berra is the greatest catcher of all time and the 52nd greatest non-pitching player in major-league history.
*Appeared in 14 World Series, winning 10
*Caught perfect game in Word Series
*15 time All Star
*Berra led all American League catchers eight times in games caught and in chances accepted, six times in double plays (a major league record), eight times in putouts, three times in assists, and once in fielding percentage. Berra left the game with the AL records for catcher putouts (8,723) and chances accepted (9,520). He was also one of only four catchers to ever field 1.000 for a season, playing 88 errorless games in 1958. Some foreign policy tidbits from Hillary’s book
Clinton describes daylight with Obama on Egypt

She describes how her first call as secretary of state went to Israeli’s prime minister, Ehud Olmert, hoping to safeguard a cease-fire reached with Gaza militants in the last days of George W. Bush’s presidency and to restart peace talks with the Palestinians. When Benjamin Netanyahu became prime minister of an Israeli government that included even more hard-line conservatives, negotiations became more difficult.

Clinton says the Obama administration made a tactical mistake, one long argued by the Jewish state and its powerful backers in Washington. “In retrospect, our early, hard line on settlements didn’t work.”

She said pushing for a freeze on the building of new Israeli homes in disputed territories hardened Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who didn’t negotiate directly with Israel for most of a 10-month construction pause because it didn’t include East Jerusalem.

When Netanyahu let the freeze expire, the talks collapsed — though she blames both sides for the failure. Abbas, she notes, ridiculed the Israel concession even as she called it “unprecedented.” But then the Palestinian demanded its extension for a continuation of negotiations with Netanyahu.

While Clinton’s retelling hardly praises Netanyahu, she describes no personal animosity between the two. That stands in clear contrast to the Israeli leader’s relationship with Obama, who is described as “furious” when new Israeli settlements are announced during a visit to Israel by Biden.

My father joined the marines at 16 due to a hardship exemption during WW2 and went from NYC to Hawaii. One of my uncles served under Patton, got a purple heart, and changed the subject when it came time to talk about what ever happened.

I have pictures of my grandfather in his WW1 uniform in his gas mask.

I am under 50. Damn catholics, their funky timelines mess up everything.

One of my great uncles served part of WW2 on Tinian. I believe he actually helped assemble the components.

His photo album was pretty interesting to look through and hear some of the stories.

The older I get the closer history gets to me. Growing up WW2 was something that happened in black and white and in a different world. When I had realized that I had been at certain job longer than the difference between the end of WW2 and my birth put things into an unimaginable perspective.

Life is short, don’t spend it all trying to defend a defector on twitter.

One of my father’s deals was being on the boat to Hawaii and he was an MP. All day long was spent standing in line waiting for your bologna sandwich unless you were a MP which meant you could go to the front of the line for your bologna sandwich.

My maternal Grandfather lied about his age after Pearl Harbor and joined the Army at 15, but by the time they found out, he had already made Sgt and had been fighting in the Pacific for a few months already. He ended up being a flamethrower man.

I learned this all from other relatives. He never talked about it.

I’m either 12 or 13 hours ahead of Eastern Time, depending on DST.

True fact: All of China is in the same time zone, despite its size. If China divided itself into time zones like the USA and Canada, there would be at least three zones, and only the eastern coastal regions would be +8 UTC.

I’m Pacific timezone and a night person to boot, so… bed in another hour or two. Mostly because a plumber is showing up at 10am (ugh) for an estimate on repiping the house.

My baby sister goes to school on the upper peninsula of Michigan, so there’s the fun kink in the US time zones there.

In some ways old school travel was much better because you had time to adjust to timezones.

I’m back to it to finish watching it again. That was the US Navy’s single finest moment in 200 years of glory.

That’s one of the most implausible stories in all of naval history…and yet it actually happened. If that happened in fiction, I’d call it unbelievable.

Traveling across the ocean by ship would have been great, for someone with the sufficient means to buy a stateroom. But I doubt I would have been one of them. Steerage would have been my lot.

As much as I like seeing family, I dread the long trans-Pacific flights. Thirteen hours cooped up in a tin can, and not being able to get a really good sleep time. The modern equivalent to steerage, but at least they had cots to sleep on.

I haven’t done China yet. The husband has, including a number of less common tourist stops (he did the overland route to Tibet back in the early 90s). Not sure when we’ll get there, honestly. I think the next targets are Scotland, Ireland, and northern France.

But after Ireland I am swearing off international travel for a bit. At least at Dublin is one of the places where there is pre-clearance for US customs. Not having to go through customs at SFO: priceless.

I’ve never had bags searched, nothing past the standard questions when you’re going through the passport spots.

My dad has told me about the time he did get searched - but he was a single guy in his 20s coming back from visiting his parents in Turkey in the 70s. (My grandparents were stationed over there at that point.)

It was really nice to be able to arrive at the airport like normal, get our bags, and go find the car. I can’t sleep on planes. This has the predictable result after a 12 hour flight.

There’s been interviews with Manson where he’s said - paraphrasing - that he really doesn’t know quite what to do with himself in the outside world. He’s been in prison so long, he likely doesn’t know how to adjust to freedom. He’d been in and out of the correctional system long before he started up his wackadoodle “Family” up at the Spanh Movie Ranch.

Even in old age, some are still in denial. I found this interesting story. There were actually about 30 people in the Manson “family” and some we’ve never even heard of, well, I’d never heard of Catherine Share until now, and I lived through it, but it was so horrible I think I tried to avoid some of the reports back then. I’m only a year older than Share and at the time was raising my 2 kids working at a full time job. She was born in 1942, adopted in CA and lived a relatively comfortable life, but she was drifting around CA (her nickname was “Gypsy”). I just cannot imagine taking the life of another, for any reason, yet these people would not have hesitated to kill for a scumbag like Manson.

reporternews.com

“Everyone wants to make them monsters,” said Share. “They weren’t monsters. They did a monstrous thing and now they’re older people and they’re not monsters anymore. None of those people ever would have been violent if it weren’t for Manson.”

That was from a woman who would have eagerly done the murders herself, except:

“Share said she was never asked, partly because she was older. But there was another reason: an extra 20 pounds that would have made it difficult for her to climb through windows.

“Let me tell you,” she said, “I was just short of murdering for him. If he had told me to get some black clothes and get in a car, I would have.”

I think Share can “rationalize” what she saw and did herself as well as the others because she became a “born again christian”. That just doesn’t cut it for me.

Mattis: No evidence of Bergdahl collusion with Taliban

During his time in Tampa as commander of U.S. Central Command, Marine Gen. James Mattis said he saw no evidence to confirm that Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, released in a prisoner swap last week, collaborated with his captors.

“I have never seen one bit of verified or confirmed evidence of that,” Mattis said in a phone interview with The Tampa Tribune. “Not one bit. You hear things and it was second- and third-hand.”

The Fox News story says information about Bergdahl converting to Islam, fraternizing openly with his captors and declaring himself a “mujahid,” or warrior for Islam, came from a source new to Clarridge’s Eclipse Group “whose trustworthiness had not been fully vetted by the group. However, the report stated, the informant “does have plausible access to the information reported.”

Fox News reported that Clarridge told them Eclipse Group “enjoyed a subcontract through the assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Low-Intensity Conflict from November 2009 through May 31, 2010, and that after the contract was terminated, he invested some $50,000 of his own money to maintain the elaborate network of informants and handlers that had yielded such detailed accounts of Bergdahl’s status.

Syria spillover: ISIS leaves Anbar campus, students flee

“The gunmen took some students to other university buildings. For the rest of us, we are still trapped in our rooms and everybody is in panic, especially the Shiite students,” al-Mehamdi told The Associated Press in a phone interview from inside the dormitory.

Several hours later, gunmen left the university under unclear circumstances. Students then boarded buses provided by the local government to flee the school, though gunfire erupted as security forces attacked retreating militants, police said.

“We thank God that this crisis ended almost peacefully and no student was hurt as far as I know,” al-Mehamdi said by mobile phone from inside a bus that took him to safety.

And when the Pentagon finally releases its report, they’ll only pay attention if it does decide to charge him with desertion. Otherwise it’ll be “old news” and quickly ignored.

Second Suspect Arrested in Theater ‘Bottle Bomb’ Explosion

nbcwashington.com

Prince George’s County Fire Department spokesman Mark Brady said Michael Sean Hollingsworth, 23, of Takoma Park, was taken into custody on Friday. He is charged with destructive device - manufacture/possession/distribution and conspiracy - destructive device - manufacture/possession/distribution in connection with the May 24 attack at the Magic Johnson Theaters.

(snip)

Another suspect, Manuel Joyner Bell, was arrested last week for his involvement in the Largo incident. Bell also faces charges in Maryland and Virginia for separate “bottle bomb” explosions at different theaters.

(snip)

The bottle bombs were filled with acid and metal. The material inside reacted, exploded the bottles and spewed acid; they are capable of sending the acid 20 to 30 feet, fire officials have said. More

New details emerging about the build-up to the attack indicate Ybarra had long struggled with substance abuse and mental health issues, although the former community college student, his friends said, had seemed to be turning his life around. He was twice evaluated by psychiatrists, but was found “not detainable” after his mother refused to have him admitted.

Looks like summer has come early here in Ostrava - temps are forecast to reach 35 C (95 Fahrenheit) by Tuesday. It’s pretty nice right now; about 80 F.

Of course, as others have mentioned here before, most buildings in Central Europe - aside from the most recently constructed, or shopping centers - don’t have AC, so when it starts getting over 90 F, that’s when people start dropping, unfortunately.

I believe it. Flying against the sun affects you more than flying with it.

OK, weekend tutoring time. See you later!

(way late to this) My solution - works for me, not promising for anyone else - is that when i take a sleeping pill when I go to bed, and a plan a short midday nap the next day. The sleeping pill helps over come the “it’s not time to sleep yet” cry of the body, and the nap helps deal with the “I got up waaaay to early” reaction.

It’s been several years now so I might need more than one day to cope but that’s all I used to need using that technique.

Body Found At Cape Beach Was Missing Head And Limbs

boston.cbslocal.com

A body found Wednesday night on Town Neck Road Beach in Sandwich was missing the head, both arms and both legs, according to authorities.

Cape & Island District Attorney Michael O’Keefe said the body was that of a black man, 6-foot to 6-foot-2, 220-230 pounds with a surgical scar on the abdomen.

The body was found wrapped in a tarp and attached to a moving dolly and was clad in black sweat-type pants and a blue t-shirt with the company name Cranston Windustrial on the back.

Typical media exaggeration to call that a ‘body’.

Dozens killed in massacre in eastern Congo

Up to 37 people including women and children were killed in Democratic Republic of Congo’s eastern province of South Kivu on Saturday morning in an attack that the regional governor blamed on a dispute over cattle.

The victims, who included several pregnant women, had been shot, stabbed or burned inside their homes. A Reuters cameraman on the scene counted 37 bodies, some of them lying inside a village church.

“It is Congolese who have carried out these attacks. It was about a dispute over cows,” South Kivu governor Marcellin Cishambo told Reuters. “The problem is that everyone in this area carries a weapon.”

Hurricanes Named After Women Are More Dangerous? Not So Fast.

Whoops. That’s a pretty basic error to make in a study where you’re trying to correlate deadliness of something over time. Actually, when the authors did attempt to account for this by comparing only storms after 1979, as you might expect, any correlation between names and deadliness vanished. Ideally, to back up a claim like this, you’d want to have lots of data, and there simply haven’t been enough years of named hurricanes to get a sufficient statistical significance.

From an unlikely source: Fox (doubt it will air on the network)

2 soldiers died while Bergdahl search underway, but not while on patrol, Pentagon finds

Pentagon officials probing claims that eight soldiers died while looking for Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl have confirmed two troops from his unit died while the search was underway, but not while they while they were on patrol, a senior defense official told Fox News Friday.

Bergdahl was held by the Taliban for five years before being released last week in exchange for five Taliban Guantanamo detainees. Since his release, members of Bergdahl’s unit at the time of his disappearance have said he was a deserter and claimed eight men died as a result of the search for him.

The official said the two soldiers in Bergdahl’s unit who died were in a combat outpost that was attacked. The official said it was impossible to prove a link between their deaths and Bergdahl’s disappearance.

In addition, investigators have determined that some of the other eight soldiers were killed while driving a logistic delivery to the base, and likely would have been doing so regardless of the search. The official said a few others were involved in explosive ordinance detection, but did not say whether that job was related to their deaths.

And, we need to do now it so we can take our country back™.”

Outrage ensues. Web sites ask for money to Get Michelle out of the White House.

2 soldiers died while Bergdahl search underway, but not while on patrol, Pentagon finds

This whole thing continues to unravel before the eyes of wingnuts. I’ve seen more and more clamming up, now muttering that they want to wait for the Pentagon to do its investigation, as if that stopped them when they were sure that Bergdahl’s unit was unified against him.

Speaking of which, I haven’t really taken stock of just who all in his unit has been put before the cameras, but I note that two of them were guys in a leadership spot. I find myself wondering today if perhaps the negative feelings from them has to do with the brass chewing them out and then holding them responsible for Bowe falling into enemy hands.

So, from the day Bowe did what ever Bowe did, they basically are claiming they were searching for him from that time on. So, anything that occurred from then on was “while searching for Bowe Bergdahl” and can be counted.

Got it.

This story is getting real thin. Soon it will be transparent enough we will see right through it.

Um, I’m sorry but yes! Anyone that obviously close to the edge is a threat to everyone. That close to the edge it is inevitable they will fall off and they will almost certainly take as many people as they can with them.

It is their last chance to prove their manhood.

Yeah, but sometimes all the glue is doing is holding the rotten substrate together. Still rotten inside and will not allow anything to be built on it.

Yes, but calling it an “error” while engaging in substantial character smearing (oops!) is just hypocrisy, and that’s not the graphics department’s fault.

Wingnut “patriots” have already decided that the military has tried and convicted Bowe Bergdahl of desertion. Many will go to church tomorrow to praise the Savior they claim was unjustly condemned by a religious mob.

re: #373 Romantic Heretic

Exactly, throw in a cache of weapons and homemade explosives and you end up with this. If that deputy had been looking away or was occupied doing something else yesterday at that time, the situation could have been A LOT uglier than it was.

You know, I have serious reservations about further stigmatizing people with mental illness, but if someone is throwing out all those signs AND has weapons, that’s just not going to end well. What we’re doing now is not working, and every fucking shooting like this SHOULD be a smack with the proverbial clue by 4 but no one is doing a fucking thing. We had three shootings in Metro Atlanta yesterday, this one, a lady who killed herself and her husband in a grocery store parking lot and a guy who got himself into a confrontation with SWAT. And those are just the ones that made the news. I don’t know what the hell it’s going to take short of someone wal

re: #284 kirkspencer

(way late to this) My solution - works for me, not promising for anyone else - is that when i take a sleeping pill when I go to bed, and a plan a short midday nap the next day. The sleeping pill helps over come the “it’s not time to sleep yet” cry of the body, and the nap helps deal with the “I got up waaaay to early” reaction.

It’s been several years now so I might need more than one day to cope but that’s all I used to need using that technique.

My system is to just stay up and tough it out until 7PM or so (Paris zone) (which is about a gazillion PM central standard time, but whatever). Wake up the next morning after 10 hours sleep or something sweet like that and it’s 5AM and you have an early start on the day but you’re not radically out of synch.

A happy twist of fate a few years back saw me in Normandy, work duties completed and free for June 5. So I made my way to Omaha beach, walked down from the cemetery to the bluffs and looked around, then back up.

The thing that struck me was how stark things must have been on the beach. Behind you is the tide coming in. In front of you are mines, wire obstacles, German machine guns, and so on. And there’s nothing for it but to either shelter behind some obstacle until the inevitable lucky shot or shell finds its way through a gap in your cover and nails you, or to make a dash for it to some better cover and better shooting vantage point. And from there, to another, and so on, until your luck runs out. Or doesn’t. And it’s a long, long ways across the beach and up the bluffs. Those who were there had to know their odds weren’t so good.

But they did it. Or, rather, after all was said and done, and so many were dead or injured, there were enough whose courage carried them forward and whose luck held.

For that day. As the war went on, everybody’s luck ran out, pretty much. Not one combat infantryman in a hundred served from D-Day right through to the end of the war. It was get killed, get captured, or get injured badly enough to require time out from the war for months—-or for good.

Everybody knew it. Mostly they stuck with it, knowing. That’s courage.

Thanks, guys.
