Former CENTCOM Commander Gen. Mattis: No Evidence of Bergdahl Collusion With Taliban

Fox News smear rapidly coming unglued
US News • Views: 34,244

In an interview with the Tampa Tribune, former head of US Central Command Marine Gen. James Mattis says he has “never seen one bit of verified or confirmed evidence” that Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl collaborated with the Taliban — but he did see information that “specifically discounted” this allegation.

“I have never seen one bit of verified or confirmed evidence of that,” Mattis said in a phone interview with The Tampa Tribune. “Not one bit. You hear things and it was second- and third-hand.”

Other information “specifically discounted” reports that Bergdahl, captured by the Taliban in June 2009 after leaving his outpost in Afghanistan, was working with his captors, he said. Mattis declined to comment on what that information was because it remains classified.

Another interesting bit of data from this story: the shady right wing group that supplied Fox News with this BREAKING BOMBSHELL SCOOP did not even verify that their source was trustworthy.

The Fox News story says information about Bergdahl converting to Islam, fraternizing openly with his captors and declaring himself a “mujahid,” or warrior for Islam, came from a source new to Clarridge’s Eclipse Group “whose trustworthiness had not been fully vetted by the group. However, the report stated, the informant “does have plausible access to the information reported.”

And that’s not all.

Fox News reported that Clarridge told them Eclipse Group “enjoyed a subcontract through the assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Low-Intensity Conflict from November 2009 through May 31, 2010, and that after the contract was terminated, he invested some $50,000 of his own money to maintain the elaborate network of informants and handlers that had yielded such detailed accounts of Bergdahl’s status. …

The Pentagon “is not aware of any contract, subcontract or otherwise” between SOLIC and the Eclipse Group, Cmdr. Amy Derrick-Frost, Defense Department spokeswoman, said late Friday afternoon. Clarridge declined comment.

This Fox News BOMBSHELL is a damp squib, and the closer it’s examined the more it falls apart.

Fox News is like Glenn Greenwald…trying to make the story about themselves.

2 thedopefishlives  Jun 7, 2014 11:06:02am

That whole “information is classified” bit is going to make the right-wing nutjobs go crazy. HURR DURR OBAMA IS KEEPING IT SECRET BECAUSE IT’S ALL A LIE!!!!!

3 Targetpractice  Jun 7, 2014 11:07:10am

But like everything else Fox does, the damage has already been done. It’ll take longer to dismantle all their bullshit and, by the time that’s done, wingnuts will have lost interest and moved onto the next “scandal.” One thing’s for sure, however: Bowe has been assured now that no matter what he does in life, he’s gonna have this shit cloud hanging over his head. For the rest of his days, he’s going to be thought of by wingnuts as “the deserter/traitor.”

“…The confused and bitter politics surrounding Bergdahl’s case also played a role in the cancellation of a rally in his home town of Hailey, Idaho. The event, planned for June 28, was designed to welcome him back.

Then the town’s police chief started getting calls from detractors. Police Chief Jeff Gunter said one lawyer called him with plans to bring 2,000 people for a protest.

“There’s no way we could handle that size of people,” said Gunter, whose force has 17 officers.”

So in other words, the assholes at Fox “News” made this shit up. Because they could. And with a little help from a GOP political operative with his own PR firm (how convenient..) they got guys who served with Bergdahl to smear him, just to make it look all nice and tidy.

Is it legal to do this to someone? I mean I know it’s happened before (Richard Jewell comes to mind), but do the Bergdahl’s have a case here?

Absolutely. A damned good lawyer could get some excellent shit on this through a long discovery process. This seems to be a very clear cut case of manufactured defamation.

I don’t care what their politics are, all of the Bergdahls’ should be made whole for what FN has done to them. Murdoch, Ailes and the network have very deep pockets.

What these fucking assholes don’t understand is that when you’re taken prisoner like that your brain goes into survival mode full stop. You’re fighting to stay alive by whatever means necessary. Richard Mourdock says nation going way of Hitler’s Nazis

Indiana Treasurer Richard Mourdock compared the nation’s direction to Hitler’s Nazi Germany, during a speech today at the Indiana Republican Convention in Fort Wayne.
…..snip…..
Now I know some of you, especially some of the guests in the room, are thinking, there’s a wild-eyed Republican speaking craziness,” he said.

But, “We are in a grave situation,” he said. “And my last duty to you as a Republican at this convention is to ask you to influence everyone you know in this state and without.”

The speech, perhaps Mourdock’s last as treasurer, brought the crowd of nearly 1,700 GOP delegates to its feet for a standing ovation.

The bottom line is that this is a concerted campaign to define Bergdahl, to move the narrative solidly against him in order to score political points.

When you have Grunell as PR coordinator for these soldiers, and Fox news using the most questionable sources presented as fact (which then get cited as official intel) people should question this.

But no, other media outlets eat it up and spread the vile, viral vomit without a second thought.

Some of the open carry people may be there in the convention with black powder revolvers.

“The Republican party doesn’t have any problems with people expressing their view points,” explained Steve Munisteri, chair of the Texas GOP. “Anybody that has a concealed handgun permit is allowed to bring in a concealed handgun, so long as it remains concealed. Also, we’ve been informed that black powder weapons are not prohibited under TABC rules, so those are not only allowed in, but there are already people here carrying them without incident. And as for long guns or AK-47s, those are not allowed by TABC rules into the facility, so we ask that they restrict their demonstrations to the sidewalks.”

This sounds exactly like the kind of absurd reports you see on “counter-Jihadist” websites. They love throwing in Arabic words—I suspect they think it makes them sound more credible. It reminds me of that “former terrorist” Kamal Saleem who claimed to be descended from a “Grand Wazir” of Islam, a make-believe title that made me LOL the first time I heard it (it still makes me giggle). “Dude, the Grand Wazir of Islam? Seriously? Was his name Jafar? Did he also have a genie and a flying carpet?”

Anybody want to bet that the person with “plausible access” ends up being either 1.) a military person with a serious case of Islamophobia who’s been deployed to Afghanistan before, or 2.) a local Afghan who claims to belong to the Taliban the way Walid Shoebat claims to have been a member of the Muslim Brotherhood? These people are so freaking lame. It’s a crying shame that they’re allowed to do what they do without any consequences.

I read an excellent post about guns on the JREF forums the other day. It went something like this:

My idea for a gun application process is this: Let everyone wait 3 days. After 3 days, tell every applicant their application was denied. If the guy says, “Oh, excuse me, let me re-check the paperwork to ensure the fields were properly filled in and re-apply”, then give him a gun. If he says, “WHAT THE F— I’M GOING TO F—ING KILL YOU”, do not give that guy a gun.

Greg Abbott, Dan Patrick help shape controversial ‘Texas Solution immigration plan

Two years ago, the state party unexpectedly adopted the Texas Solution and its call for a guest worker program as its official immigration plank. This year, supporters have scratched the term guest worker and replaced it with support for a visa program.

Despite the different choice of terms, the end goal is still the same: to carve a path for undocumented immigrants to be able to work legally.

re: #136 Gus

On the one hand, if the weapon is not loaded (bullet chambered) you cannot switch the selector to safe.

On the other hand there’s a magazine in the well. It can be there without a round being chambered, but all it takes is a short pull on the charging handle to chamber one. It’s difficult and it is uncommon but it is a long way from impossible.

On the gripping hand, the majority of people do not know about any of this. Heck, they don’t know enough to know whether the safety is on or off. What they see is weapon with magazine in it, and that makes it a loaded weapon that’s the weapon of choice for mass shooters.

The bracero program was initially prompted by a demand for manual labor during World War II and began with the U.S. government bringing in a few hundred experienced Mexican agricultural laborers to harvest sugar beets in the Stockton, California area. The program soon spread to cover most of the United States and provided workers for the agricultural labor market (with the notable exception being Texas, which initially opted out of the program in preference to an “open border” policy, and was denied braceros by the Mexican government until 1947 due to perceived mistreatment of Mexican laborers.

They probably think it’s a Constitutional Convention and that anything they vote for is binding. Wouldn’t surprise me.

Ironically, they are all “experts” on the U.S. Constitution and how Obama is violating it.

Texas GOP platforms are always good for a laugh. So weird.

It’s all fun and games until you realize they’re serious.

I weep for this state. We’re being run by crazy people.

Oh, of course. Starting with the fact that it’s unconstitutional for a black man to be POTUS since the President lives in the White House.

I’d add sarc tags to that, but some dipshits believe it.

I think they know exactly what they’re doing and they don’t care. They make more than most people will ever see in a lifetime and there are never any consequences for getting it wrong, so why the hell should they bother? There’s no incentive to do anything in depth or anything remotely resembling actual journalistic type work. When was the last time one of these fools got fired or even reprimanded for getting important details wrong? It’s almost like that’s a feature, not a bug.

If it is, it’s not because of the current POTUS. The fascists in America exists exclusively with the GOP.

re: #208 Charles Johnson

What puzzles me about guys like Terry Moran and Jake Tapper - they’ve been around a while. They aren’t newbies. You mean to tell me “according to secret documents prepared on the basis of a purported eyewitness account” didn’t set off ANY warning signals for them? And then the docs themselves say that the so-called eyewitness was NEVER EVEN VETTED FULLY? Before making such serious charges?

Is this the future of journalism?

I know some writers I follow questioned the sourcing, so it’s not universal yet, whatever’s going on. Maybe there’s still time to stop it, if we act fast.

Well, most of us know that if you want to write fiction, you don’t call yourself a reporter or journalist.

I need to put away groceries and make dinner, but before I go here’s a cool tree that was behind the parking of a doctor’s office I visited Thursday. Unfortunately, all I had with me was my iPod Touch, but I have to go back for another appointment on the 20th, so I’m gonna try to remember to take my DSLR. Lots of interesting textures there…

I read an excellent post about guns on the JREF forums the other day. It went something like this:

Better follow them online too. Some people in an Illinois gun forum aren’t happy with the 3 day wait. Or the fingerprinting for CCW.

Small plane entered Capitol restricted airspace, wasn’t communicating. Capitol went to AIRCON RED. Pilot now communicating, exited airspace

Yeah. An F16 flying next to you with the pilot miming ‘pick up your damn phone!’ is generally a good way to get someone communicating.

re: #208 Charles Johnson

It seems most of the “reporters” on TV are totally smitten with Snowden and Greenwald as well and don’t question them on basic facts or apparent contradictions. Print reporters (Pierce excluded) seem to be more inclined to actually investigate and analyze. I would think reporters would have enough pride in their craft to detect someone who is pretending to be a journalist and ask hard hitting questions about vetting process.

The same dynamic seems to be in play with Bergdahl’s story. I will say that Here and Now on NPR has done a stellar job of interviewing people who understand how the military judicial processes work and how important they are to obtaining facts. A professor from Yale who teaches Military Law provided excellent information during his interview on Thursday..

I’m usually not a fan of NPR’s news coverage, but Here and Now has been outstanding.

Come join 13-year-old Brenna Strong along with her mom, Bea, and her dad, Richard, as they spend a typical Saturday running errands and having fun together. What’s not so typical is that Brenna’s parents lawfully open carry handguns for self-defense. The Strongs join a growing number of families that are standing up for their 2nd Amendment rights by open carrying and bringing gun ownership out of the closet and into the mainstream.

I suppose it’s entirely coincidental that the parents might be called Bea Dick.

I am officially starting the countdown until a massive Libel lawsuit is filed by Bergdahl and his family against Fox News, WND, and many other right-wing wacko media outfits. This is going to be juicy sweet, although it may take a few years to finally get underway. I have no doubt it is coming.

re: #20 Bulworth

whats Tapper complaining about with the adultery thing? That the media should uncritically report “scoop” from former Iran Contra figure?

One of the soldiers who served with Bergdahl got an “other than honorable discharge”. Tapper provides an example of another soldier who got such a discharge, due to adultery, to illuminate the kind of thing that results in an “other than honorable discharge”.

He then talks about politicians as a way to say that, just because a soldier may have lied to his wife, doesn’t mean the soldier isn’t credible when asked about the behavior of a fellow soldier.
