NPR Tiny Desk Concert: Simone Dinnerstein, Bach Two-Part Inventions

In this incredibly great Tiny Desk Concert, piano virtuoso Simone Dinnerstein plays several of Johann Sebastian Bach’s infamously difficult Two-Part Inventions, and talks about the demands these pieces make on a pianist’s independence and musicality.

And wow, is she ever skilled in both of these. She takes a couple of these inventions at an insanely fast tempo; it’s exhilarating to watch.

Set List

J.S. Bach: Inventions Nos. 1, 6, 8
J.S. Bach: Inventions Nos. 9, 10
J.S. Bach: Inventions Nos. 12, 13, 14

And sometimes they do suck…what the fuck:

Witnesses told police one yelled “This is the start of a revolution” before shooting the officers. The shooters then stripped the officers of their weapons and ammunition and went into the Walmart at 201 North Nellis.

Sweet. But then, I dearly love me some Bach. I may have to put the Musical Offering to play after I get back from grocery shopping.

I always thought Bach was pretty boring, but Bach did not write for the piano as it wasn’t invented yet.

This is music intended for the clavichord.

Doesn’t sound as boring, does it?

Love the piano inventions! I still have four of them memorized that I learned as a teenager. Since this thread may get more attention from classical music loving lizardim, I want to share a link to my favorite recent discovery, a piano piece by Ernesto Halffter, a Cuban born composer who studied under De Falla.

I’m a real sucker for Spanish classical piano pieces…so much passion and oomph!

Hey Gang,

Back from my open water scuba training. If you recall yesterday evening I was feeling a bit of apprehension about it, turns out my fears were totally unwarranted.

Everything went like a charm. Visibility was about 10-15 feet, the wetsuit kept me nice and warm, and never even noticed it in any negative way. I did all my skills with no problem, never felt uncomfortable underwater, and had a great time.

The Quarry is full of brim / bluegill type fish, and they can be aggressive. I had one about 4 inches long total come up, look at me, and then tried to take a bite at my finger. it was too funny.

Only downside, I get home, putting my wetsuit in the tub to wash it off, and my phone jumps out of my pocket into the water. I get it out, it reboots a couple of times, and now it’s in a bag of rice, sim and sd cards out of it. It’s a Razr Maxx, so no battery to remove, it’s all a sealed unit.

It’s stuck in a not on / not off state, I’m really hoping that overnight in the bag of rice will save it. I really like that phone, it’s funny that off all the water I’ve been around since I’ve had it, it takes it’s trip in a bath tub.

This is also a right wing talking point that comes up on the few liberal talk radio shows there are all the damned time. As soon as anyone talks about gun violence anywhere the calls start in with “well, what about CHICAGO?? I don’t think mass shooters are interested in fame or adulation - it’s kind of a grim competition to see who can one-up the other.

And in any event, they certainly do get their names in the history books, and I think for some disturbed individuals that may be motivation enough.

RBS

Saved mine a couple weeks ago after putting it through the wash-spin-rinse-spin cycles. I put it in a .50 cal can full of silica gel. (I think you can get it cheap at drug stores.) All it lost was the cheezy camera feature.

Or how little they’re worth to their employers, who can just replace them with someone who is desperate enough to work for less.

Is that a problem with employees or employers, though? I found a company that values me highly enough to retain me through multiple rounds of firings. It’s the closest thing to a sure-thing job I’ve ever had. As a programmer, I am always technically in danger of being replaced by the next child prodigy to come out of university (or from India, for that matter), but my company has built a sense of security around me. Of course, they’re a privately owned company with a much flatter financial structure, not a megacorp with a CEO who makes multiple millions of dollars in what I call “alternately taxed income” (stock options and other capital gains).

Killing two cops really ups the ante for the Sov. Cit. terrorists. I wouldn’t want to be a BLM agent anywhere in the Southwest where these vermin nest these days.

They have a strange eagerness for violence, considering their signature ploy is lawfare. They’ve shot a couple cops in traffic stops and similar situations. The nut who grabbed the kid from the Alabama schoolbus was identifiably SC.

I don’t think mass shooters are interested in fame or adulation - it’s kind of a grim competition to see who can one-up the other.

And in any event, the certainly do get their names in the history books, and I think for some disturbed individuals that may be motivation enough.

I think they just hate; people, the world, their lives. Like most people shit hasn’t worked out the way they like but unlike most people they just can’t accept it. They collect wounds. Lots of people have homicidal ideation, it’s fantastically common yet most people just let transitory fucked up ideas pass by and never act on them. These guys just reach a breaking point where natural inhibition no longer functions and the idea becomes a fixation, a fantasy, then an actual plan intended to be carried out.

Been out walking, then cooking dinner. And I see that things have escalated to ambushing law enforcement officers in a pizza store.

Right about when I left to go for a walk I got called into work to check on something. Since I already had my camera in my bag I took it along. Since there was no one else about I had free access to offices in order to do some photography from higher altitude than normal. Once I download and do some basic editing and resizing I’ll post a few shots of what Philadelphia looks like from 30 or 40 stories up in an office building. Plus the usual odd photo of a building or plant.

Ford and Samsung’s new lithium-ion battery may send lead-acid units to the scrap heap

The lead-acid car battery was invented in 1859 by French physicist Gaston Planté, and if you pop open the hood of your car right now, you’ll probably see something very similar to his first prototype. For all the advancements cars have made over the years, its batteries have remained eerily unchanged.
This Tuesday, Ford and technology mogul Samsung announced a dual-battery system for gas-powered vehicles that could be the beginning of the end for the lead-acid battery.
Ford and Samsung have combined a lithium-ion battery with a 12-volt lead-acid unit, creating a new, lighter, and more flexible power source. The new concept has massive potential for fuel savings, as the lithium-ion component can be recharged through regenerative braking.

These are the sales reps, fund raisers, and other root weevils who would come into my office, insult our security guard and janitor, behave dismissively toward the receptionist, and then try to kiss my ass when I made an appearance. No, HELL NO, that would not do at all. It is amazing how many people would do this kind of stuff. For some reason, Boy Scout fund raisers were the worst of the worst, invariably rude and insulting toward working people, completely obsequious toward anyone they thought might have a pocket they could pick. It didn’t take too many visits to convince them they weren’t welcome. Then one of their overlords tried to blackmail me: “Do you want to become known as a company that doesn’t support the scouts?”

When you go to the supermarket and you’re pushing your stuff through the checkout, look at the cashier’s name tag and when you pay for your order say “Thank you [Cashier’s Name] have a great day!”

If you ask the bagger to help carry your stuff to the car, give them a tip.

She has 76,000 followers on Twitter. You don’t find that scary?

Of course I do. I also find Fox “News” being the number one cable network for “news” scary.

Personally, I think we’re finished as a country. The middle class is dying, soon to be extinct, and assholes like Janie and her followers couldn’t care less.

We’re well on our way to becoming a 10%top/90% bottom society, and I don’t see anything changing that, particularly when so much of the bottom votes for the policies that only benefit the top.

I always try to ensure that I treat cashiers with the utmost politeness and slip in a “have a nice day” after every transaction. My first high school job was working at a retail store; I will never do it again, but I gained a real appreciation for the mooks behind the counter.

Being pleasant costs nothing, and probably lowers one’s own blood pressure.

Yet. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was coming. Kinda interesting, isn’t it, that almost all of the good conservative “hawt” women are blonde bombshells? With the notorious exception of Sarah Palin, I suppose, but it seems to reflect their misogynistic view of women that they so heavily favor the stereotype.

Fox knows their audience. Don’t ever make the mistake of thinking that Fox just happens to be the way it is. They probably have more PhD level psychologists and statisticians on staff than a mid sized university just to tailor their message/image to grab their audience.

I do the same thing for bartenders, waiters, and anyone in the service industry. I used to work in a sports bar. I know what they go through. It’s not a hardship to smile and be kind to the person serving me food or a drink at a happy hour, or to tip them after the fact.

Hey Gang,

Back from my open water scuba training. If you recall yesterday evening I was feeling a bit of apprehension about it, turns out my fears were totally unwarranted.

-snip-

Only downside, I get home, putting my wetsuit in the tub to wash it off, and my phone jumps out of my pocket into the water. I get it out, it reboots a couple of times, and now it’s in a bag of rice, sim and sd cards out of it. It’s a Razr Maxx, so no battery to remove, it’s all a sealed unit.

It’s stuck in a not on / not off state, I’m really hoping that overnight in the bag of rice will save it. I really like that phone, it’s funny that off all the water I’ve been around since I’ve had it, it takes it’s trip in a bath tub.

RBS

As you well know, if the contacts & data you need is on your Sim & SD cards, you’re better off replacing the device, as its reliability and battery will have been compromised. - should it come alive again.

It’s long been said, and I’ve always held to the notion that you can tell a lot about a person by the way he treats somebody who he feels has no ability to affect his career or life (ie, a cashier at a store). A “nice” person who treats a waiter badly, just to show his power, isn’t a “nice” person at all.

I’m alway sure to say things like “Please” and “Thank you very much” in my interactions with people. I like to look them in the eyes, smile, let them know that I see that they are there. I can’t believe the utter rudeness to another person that I see on a day in basis. Just because that person is behind the counter or fixing your latte doesn’t mean that it’s ok to ‘shush’ them because you’re on the phone. (which I’ve seen happen).

In my perfect world (which involves the powerball coming in), somebody getting a job working for me would be observed as they went about their routine day. If they treat sales clerks, cashiers, attendants poorly, they don’t work for me. Not only that, it would be made abundently clear to them why they didn’t get the job.

I have no idea why this post toggled my RANT setting. Maybe my mother just raised me right. Maybe I still remember those college jobs running a register. Maybe I’m just not a dick.

Yea… I’m not holding out much hope. Worst part is, I had that phone all set up exactly the way I wanted it, had even spent some money to get a couple of real apps installed. I imagine that I’m going to have to repurchase the ones that cost money. Not a big investment, but it’s going to be a PITA.

When I added a new android device, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that I owned all my paid apps, and didn’t need to pay again to put them on a second device. That was from google play.

The apps should be re-downloadable at no cost as you have already purchased them.

Should more extreme measures be necessary, even tho we do forensic work on handhelds, we send the wet-dead and near-dead handhelds to a shop in Cool Springs for data recovery.

Let me know and I’ll provide contact info, and you can review your options with them.
