Luca Stricagnoli Plays the Theme From Braveheart, on 4 Instruments

Music • Views: 25,970

YouTube

Yes, another music video, but I promise you’ll like this one too. Luca Stricagnoli pulls off something pretty amazing here, playing two harmonicas, a baritone guitar, and a recorder (the video description calls it a flute) for a terrific solo version of the theme from the movie “Braveheart,” composed by James Horner.

Theme from the “Braveheart” movie’s original soundtrack , composed by J.Horner, arranged and performed by Luca Stricagnoli on a baritone guitar made by Davide Serracini, two harmonicas and a flute.

Wikipedia’s new Media Viewer function sucks on browsers, it takes three steps to do what was easily accessible before and it’s half hidden in a superfluous design interface.

Flute confusion. Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson plays a ‘transverse flute’. To the Italians, the straight ‘recorder’ is a ‘sweet’ flute, a ‘flauto dolce’.

This was relegated to the side-column, but its actually more important than that headline:

Official: Karachi Airport Attacked By Gunmen

KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) — Gunmen disguised as police guards attacked a terminal at Pakistan’s busiest airport Sunday with machine guns and a rocket launcher during a five-hour siege that killed 13 people as explosions echoed into the night, officials said.

A separate suicide bombing in the country’s southwest killed 23 Shiite pilgrims returning from Iran, authorities said.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack on the Jinnah International Airport in Karachi, named after the founder of Pakistan, nor the suicide bombing in Baluchistan province. However, the attacks come as government-led peace talks with the local Taliban faction and other militants have floundered in recent weeks.

The airport attack began late Sunday and continued on into the dawn hours of Monday in Karachi, a sprawling port city on Pakistan’s southern coast, although officials said all the passengers had been evacuated. During the course of the attack, heavy gunfire and multiple explosions could be heard coming from the terminal, used for VIP flights and cargo, as militants and security forces battled for control. A major fire rose from the airport, illuminating the night sky in an orange glow as the silhouettes of jets could be seen.

The deadly operation was carried out by 10 militants, said the Chief Minister of Sindh province, Qaim Ali Shah.

“They were well trained. Their plan was very well thought out,” he told reporters. He said they intended to destroy some of the aircraft and buildings but were not able to.

Trojan Horse update: ‘Trojan Horse’: Ofsted to publish reports on Birmingham schools

The inquiry into 21 schools is expected to say six schools will be placed in special measures, and that five of them did not protect pupils from extremism.

The prime minister is asking for snap Ofsted inspections of schools.

A parallel investigation has criticised the trust at the centre of the claims.

The leaked draft report by the Education Funding Agency (EFA), said the Park View Educational Trust ran schools that had “taken the Islamic focus too far”.

It also found girls and boys had been segregated in some classes.

Tesla boss Elon Musk has given the strongest hint yet that the firm is considering “freeing” its patents to help speed up electric car development.

Mr Musk said he hoped to break down technological barriers to help speed up electric car adoption.

Not pure altruism as he’s working on the presumption that he’ll sell more cars as well. That being said, it’s still an utterly ebil concept to Libertarians/Objectivists who would argue that you have to extract maximum value from all forms of your capital.

The idea of freeing the patents would fit Adam Smith’s moral & economic theory quite well, however.

Evening lizards!

Friday was both my daughters 12th birthday so we took them and one of their friends to the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL. As I told you one of my daughters changed her dream of being a teacher and now wants to be an engineer. (She’s also a huge Homer Hickam fan) When we walked into the rocket center she suddenly got excited and said “Look, it’s Wernher von Braun!” and pointed to a bust of him right by the desk where we were buying tickets. Who else knows of any 12 year old who knows who Wernher von Braun is?

I didn’t know what to expect when bringing three 12 year old girls to a NASA museum instead of 6 Flags. It was great. They liked looking at the rockets, riding the G Force ride (they did that 6 times), they really enjoyed the IMAX movie about the Hubble. My one daughter said to me “Wouldn’t it be cool if Homer was here today?” Later she found out he actually lives there in Huntsville.

We went to the Nashville Zoo yesterday but they didn’t show nearly the excitement they did in Huntsville at the rocket center. Next year she wants to go to Space Camp and I think her friend wants to go too.

Feds charge gang members with Quick murder

CHARLOTTESVILLE The kidnapping and homicide of reserve Waynesboro police officer Kevin W. Quick was part of a months-long crime spree committed by a local organization of a national street gang, according to a federal indictment unsealed Friday.

The indictments charge four members of the gang with killing Quick after he left his mother’s home in Afton on Jan. 31. The four held him against his will as they drove to various banks to withdraw money from his accounts, the indictment alleges.

They then shot him to death to keep their crime concealed and left his body in a wooded area of Goochland County near the border with Louisa County, the indictment states.

This got me curious:

It’s apparently referencing James Rosen on O’Reilly from a couple day’s back:

Youtube Video

O’Reilly: “How would you define sergeant Bergdahl?”

Rosen: “Probably, in some respects, as a kind of modern day Lee Harvey Oswald. A confused figure. A kind of inept figure by many accounts, but I stand by my reporting. …”

Rosen: “… There’s a lot still to be discovered, and presumably, at some point, there will be a full, proper Article 32 investigation.”

O’Reilly: “OK, but you’re presuming that in an administration, that if it turns out that he’s a real bad guy it’s really going to be curtains for President Obama. … Right now the President’s whole legacy is riding on this story. That’s how important it is. His whole administration is riding on it. If it turns out that this guy collaborator, Rosen, you know what’s going to happen. His administration is done. That’s how big this story is.”

I snipped out Rosen rehashing his “Dewey” Clarridge story.

117 Gus  Jun 8, 2014 9:28:34pm

The shooters were a married couple thought to be in their late 20s who were new to the Las Vegas Valley, according to a law enforcement official close to the investigation. Police are looking into their links to the white supremacy movement and found swastika symbols during their initial investigation.

118 Gus  Jun 8, 2014 9:29:11pm

Details are sketchy but Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department sources close to the investigation say the shooters shouted that “this is the start of a revolution” before opening fire on the officers, and draped their bodies with cloth showing a Revolutionary War-era flag. Investigators have also found paraphernalia associated with white supremacists.

Fresh gunfire at Karachi airport, security operation resumes

KARACHI: Pakistan’s security forces said Monday they have relaunched a military operation at Karachi airport as gunfire resumed several hours after they announced the end of a militant siege that left 24 dead. “We have relaunched the operation and called in additional troops,” said Sibtain Rizvi, spokesman for the Rangers paramilitary force, adding that one police officer had been injured in the firing.

An AFP reporter at the scene said gunshots could be heard inside the airport and that rangers and elite commandos were rushing inside.
The initial assault at the Jinnah International Airport began late Sunday and raged until dawn, when the military said that all 10 militants had been killed.

Equipped with suicide vests, grenades and rocket launchers, they had battled security forces in one of the most brazen attacks in years in Pakistan’s biggest city.

Among the 14 victims were security personnel and four airport workers.

It’s telling how Republicans often accuse people who disagree with them on tax and minimum wage policy with being poor and working minimum wage jobs. It offers another layer of confirmation that conservatives can’t really conceive of any motive not rooted in abject selfism, and fundamentally lack empathy. Also, it betrays an intrinsic classism to think calling someone poor is an insult.

Police searching downtown apartment possibly connected to cop killers

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) — Las Vegas police are currently serving a search warrant at an apartment on Bruce Street near Fremont Street in downtown Las Vegas.

Other media outlets are reporting that the search could be related to this morning’s shooting of two police officers in the eastern part of the valley.

A woman who lives near the apartment that is being searched told Action News that the apartment was occupied by the couple who is accused of shooting two Las Vegas police officers on Sunday morning.

According to the neighbor, the couple would often talk about killing police officers and were very anti-government.

The neighbor also told Action News that the man would often dress up as the “Joker” and “Slender Man” and the woman would dress up as “Harley Quinn.”

The “Joker” is a comic book super villain who was portrayed as a criminal mastermind. He was the arch enemy of Batman. James Holmes, the man who shot and killed 12 people at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, dressed up as the Joker during the mass murder.

“Slender Man” has most recently been associated with the stabbing of a 12-year-old girl by her 12-year-old friends. The girls allegedly stabbed the girl because they wanted to meet the fictional character made popular by the website creepypasta.com.

“Harley Quinn” is also a fictional character in the “Batman” comic book series. She is the girlfriend of the “Joker.”

Several apartments have been evacuated and Bruce Street is currently closed from Charleston to Fremont.

Idiots. Total fucking idiots.

The same people who have been spitting on Bergdahl before he could even make his case were raving mad about the DHS report that correctly predicted that some veterans may flock to rightwing extremism, which presents danger because of their combat skills.

The same report stated:

that while DHS “has no specific information that domestic rightwing terrorists are currently planning acts of violence…rightwing extremists may be gaining new recruits by playing on their fears about several emergent issues.”
[…]
The “emergent issues,” the DHS report states, include both “the election of the first African American president” and “a prolonged economic downturn—including real estate foreclosures, unemployment, and an inability to obtain credit,” which DHS says “present unique drivers for rightwing radicalization and recruitment.”
“A recent example of the potential violence associated with a rise in rightwing extremism may be found in the shooting deaths of three police officers in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on 4 April 2009,” the report states. “The alleged gunman’s reaction reportedly was influenced by his racist ideology and belief in antigovernment conspiracy theories related to gun confiscations, citizen detention camps, and a Jewish-controlled ‘one world government.’”

I wonder if all the scum that agitated against the report should be thought of as willing accomplices…

If you think about it, this sort of attack on the poor is profoundly anti capitalistic.

Remember, only one out of every five new business survives after five years. Why? Not because the owners have a bad idea, or they didn’t work. The number one reason why businesses fail is…under capitalization and lack of investment.

More businesses would prosper if they had the needed capital and investment. More individuals would prosper and succeed if they had the needed capital and investment.

re: #152 Romantic Here

Go placidly amid the noise and waste
And remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof
Avoid quiet and passive persons, unless you are in need of sleep
Rotate your tires
Speak glowingly of those greater than yourself
And heed well their advice, even though they be turkeys
Know what to kiss, and when
Consider that two wrongs never make a right, but that three do
Wherever possible, put people on hold
Be comforted that in the face of all aridity and disillusionment
And despite the changing fortunes of time
There is always a big future in computer maintenance

You are a fluke of the universe
You have no right to be here
And whether you can hear it or not
The universe is laughing behind your back

Remember The Pueblo
Strive at all times to bend, fold, spindle, and mutilate
Know yourself
If you need help, call the FBI
Exercise caution in your daily affairs
Especially with those persons closest to you -
That lemon on your left, for instance
Be assured that a walk through the ocean of most souls
Would scarcely get your feet wet
Fall not in love therefore. It will stick to your face
Gracefully surrender the things of youth: birds, clean air, tuna, Taiwan
And let not the sands of time get in your lunch
Hire people with hooks
For a good time, call 606-4311. Ask for Ken
Take heart in the bedeepening gloom
That your dog is finally getting enough cheese
And reflect that whatever fortune may be your lot
It could only be worse in Milwaukee

You are a fluke of the universe
You have no right to be here
And whether you can hear it or not
The universe is laughing behind your back

Therefore, make peace with your god
Whatever you perceive him to be - hairy thunderer, or cosmic muffin
With all its hopes, dreams, promises, and urban renewal
The world continues to deteriorate
Give up!

Speaking of diversions, I think I’ve lost interest in Continuum, the Canadian sci-fi show that started out strong but now seems totally lost in an infinite regression of plot twists and badly stereotyped dialogue.

I tried watching that show since the boyfriend seems to watch anything and everything on SyFy and I hated it. The only show that irritates me more is Lost Girl. God, that show is awful.

Yep. Obviously, it makes them deeply uncomfortable. I know quite a few Muslims that do similar mental gymnastics whenever some loon blows himself up or perpetrates some other manner of atrocity.

Yes, it’s extraordinarily disconcerting to say the least, but trying to dismiss extremism isn’t going to make the problem go away.
