Eric Cantor Defeated in VA GOP Primary by Tea Party Calvinist

Fanatics rejoice

The big news of the evening: House Majority Leader Eric Cantor has lost the Virginia GOP primary to Tea Party challenger Dave Brat … a Christian Reconstructionist who cites 16th century theologian John Calvin as an influence. Just what we need, another extreme right wing religious fundamentalist in Congress.

Scary to think that Cantor will probably be considered to the left of Mao by his party. We’ll be pining for the good old days when Cantors obstructionism was just boys being boys.

great scalp for the Tea Party, wonder what atrocities will follow in its wake…. Also have to wonder if this may be good news for Dems because if only the true believers came out to vote for this guy, perhaps the Dems can actually peel this seat off… every little bit helps.

From Betsy Woodruff, NRO:

Brat’s background should make him especially appealing to conservative organizations. He chairs the department of economics and business at Randolph-Macon College and heads its BB&T Moral Foundations of Capitalism program. The funding for the program came from John Allison, the former CEO of BB&T (a financial-services company) who now heads the Cato Institute. The two share an affinity for Ayn Rand: Allison is a major supporter of the Ayn Rand Institute, and Brat co-authored a paper titled “An Analysis of the Moral Foundations in Ayn Rand.” Brat says that while he isn’t a Randian, he has been influenced by Atlas Shrugged and appreciates Rand’s case for human freedom and free markets.

His academic background isn’t all economics, though. Brat got a business degree from Hope College in Holland, Mich., then went to Princeton seminary. Before deciding to focus on economics, he wanted to be a professor of systematic theology and cites John Calvin, Karl Barth, and Reinhold Niebuhr as influences.

And he says his religious background informs his views on economics. “I’ve always found it amazing how we have the grand swath of the Judeo-Christian tradition, and we lost moral arguments on the major issue of our day,” he says, referring to fiscal-policy issues.

A Randian-Christian. Oh boy.

In a sensible world, enough of the 44% that voted for Cantor in the primary would defect to the (D) candidate in the general election to prevent such extremists from getting into power.

Of course this will never happen. With the GOP, every day is ‘Party uber alles’ day.

That’s not so unusual for a libertarian, but so intense is Allison’s devotion to Rand’s work that he has waged a campaign to make college students read it, using the power of the BB&T Charitable Foundation and millions of dollars in donations to schools to achieve his goal. ”

No issue is more perfectly suited for getting this festival started than immigration, since the establishment likes having people around whose labor can be more readily exploited because of legal status issues and the base is xenophobic.

re: #34 Shvaughn

What does the district look like? Any possibility that this could swing Democratic?

From Wikipedia:

The district stretches from the west end of Richmond and its suburbs in Henrico and portions of Chesterfield Counties, through Orange, Culpeper and northward to Page and Rappahannock Counties. Its current configuration dates from 1993, when Virginia was forced to create a majority-minority district by a Justice Department directive. At that time, most of Richmond, which had been entirely in the old 3rd District for over a century, was shifted to a newly created 3rd District. The remaining territory in the old 3rd was combined with some more rural areas to the north to form the new 7th District.

Prior to 1993, the 7th District stretched from the fringes of the Washington, D.C. suburbs to Charlottesville. It included the far northern portion of the Shenandoah Valley, as well as Manassas and Fredericksburg.

According to the United States Census Bureau’s 2010 data for the 111th Congress, the total population of the district is 757,917. Median age for the district is 39.2 years. 74.3% of the district is White, 17.1% Black or African American, 3.9% Asian, 4.9% Hispanic or Latino, 0.3% Native American or Alaskan, and 2.1% some other race. Owner-occupied housing is 72.0% and renter-occupied housing is 28.0%. The median value of single-family owner-occupied homes is $188,400. 88.1% of the district population has at least a high school degree, 36.7% at least a bachelor’s degree or higher. 9.9% of the district are civilian veterans. 12.7% are foreign born and 20.1% speak a language other than English at home. 9.9% are of disability status. 68.2% of the district is in the labor force, which consists of those 16 years and older. Mean travel time to work is 26.2 minutes. Median household income is $64,751. Per capita income is $33,628. 5.3% of the population account for families living below the poverty level, and 7.6% of individuals live below the poverty level.

re: #37 Justanotherhuman

Interesting intersection with Calvinism:

Max Weber (1864-1920) appropriated the concept of predestination to explain the rise of capitalism as an economic system. Because no one knows exactly who will be saved, one can look only to temporal conditions as evidence of God’s favor. Thus the most faithful response to the life one is given is to care prudently for one’s resources and work diligently to show further evidence of humility and sobriety. If one accumulates wealth and property in the process of careful management of earthly resources, one can live more hopefully—and thus more faithfully. Randall Collins (1996) writes:

If one does this, turning one’s life into a calling, restricting any impulse to frivolous pleasure, one comes to experience a feeling of assurance that one is a member of the Elect. The puritan, ascetic lifestyle thus emerges as a response to the doctrine of predestination. Its effects, in turn, are to bring worldly economic activity under religious control and to harness religious motivation to a new spirit of capitalism.

I regard it as much more likely that America will break up. To those of us outside the States it seems pretty obvious large swathes of the nation loathe the other people and places in it and can’t wait to leave.

I’ve been thinking for a couple of years now that might be for the best. An somewhat amicable divorce now rather than a viciously vituperative one in the future.

I can’t figure out what to do with all of the States atomic weapons though.

51 olafmetal  Jun 10, 2014 5:44:18pm

A major part of Calvinism is the idea of predestination and the elect. Since God is all knowing and all powerful humans lack free will and cannot influence whether they go to heaven or hell. Their are some indications of who will be the elect going to heaven though. They will be the more upstanding and successful members of the community. This ties in quite well with our current political climate. Conservatives see the rich and powerful as paragons of virtue and intelligence chosen by god. That is why they constantly try to undermine the democratic process. Democracy is bad because it can potentially undermine the authority of gods chosen people.

Get as many like-minded people as you can to do the same.

The wingnut ‘magic’ is in vote suppression and gerrymandering.

Not really. The magic is getting the base so worked up with fear and anger and hatred that nothing will keep then from voting. It helps to have had 24/7 media outlets dedicated to that purpose for the last six years.

The Dems have nothing like that now, and because some Dems are disappointed in what Obama hasn’t accomplished they’re just going to sit at home and sulk while the far, far right takes over the country.

What’s instructive here is that this was a comparatively high turnout election to 2012, and that in a off year primary Cantor seems to have lost primarily because he didn’t hate immigrants enough. He didn’t schedule any votes on immigration reform, but at least on paper he gave wishy washy sentiments of approval for some nebulous version of the DREAM Act and allowing foreign citizen veterans of our military gain legal status. He obstructed actual immigration reform efforts at pretty much every turn, but Brat was able to paint him as an amnesty supporting liberal because Cantor didn’t back up his obstruction with vocal expressions of hate.

So, seriously, fuck the Republican party. Fuck it right in the neck.

Hilarious. Obama certainly won’t miss Cantor. He’s been a total pain in his ass. Then again, the new Majority Leader will probably be even worse.

This is a pretty big deal. IIRC, the last time someone in such a high leadership position in the House lost his seat was Speaker Tom Foley, 20 years ago. But that was arguably less surprising, since he lost to a member of the opposing party…not an even more extreme ideologue in his own party.

The irony is that Cantor positioned himself to the right of Boehner, partly in the hopes of becoming Speaker someday. But apparently he didn’t position himself FAR right enough to get the nod in his own district, which he’s served over a decade. Cantor was already one of the gop’s most aggressive anti-Obama/anti-Dem attack dogs. How much more right wing would he have to be to satisfy the voters in his district?

This x100. Cantor gave the Teabaggers damn near everything they wanted on substance, but he was voted out purely for not being hateful enough in his rhetoric.

Any takers on a bet for when the first ‘2 minutes of hate’ or reasonable facsimile thereof will air at a GOP convention?

2016 seems about right to me.

169 ObserverArt  Jun 10, 2014 6:22:42pm

This thread is moving fast and I haven’t had a chance to catch up, so if this has already been discussed, sorry.

I think this election stunner is more about Cantor’s district turning against him. They wanted him gone. It’s the old throw the bum out move. Two things point to that to me.

1. The dude that beat him only ran on the immigration issues. I don’t think that was enough to dump a guy like Cantor. There had to be some disappointment with Cantor overall.

2. Turnout was low. People are not going out to support Cantor…in a Republican district. Says a lot.

My summation. If the Dems have a decent candidate, I think they can make a run for it in that district. Again…throw the bum out also means we want someone new. The floor is open to sell those folks in Virginia that a nice level headed centrist Democrat can work for you. The other guy…Brat…he may too much for the people too, but was enough to take down Cantor which may have been the important goal of the voters.

And, I wonder what Reince Priebus is up to tonight?

I think what Cantor’s defeat does show you is how extremely nuts the GOP base has become. I am with Frank. Cantor never actually supported or did anything meaningful on immigration reform but it seems that he was defeated for not being openly hateful enough. It’s scary to me honestly the direction that party’s going and knowing they could get the Senate next year or worse the presidency in three years.

I guess being a poseur has its benefits but I think Graham benefited from having no united opposition against him unlike Cochran.

That and having six or so teabaggers splitting the vote is exactly what happened.

Cochran’s another matter. Here’s a guy who could hardly be more conservative, yet he loses his primary to the guy who has his wife filmed in a dementia unit, and the GOP base is fine with that.

Really though. Although I am darkly amused by this development. It does show you how fucked up the Republican Party is getting.

Is getting? It’s gone. There. Way past irrational.

The hate is strong with them. That’s what’s driving this. Hate. Hate of Obama and anything even remotely associated with Obama’s agenda or issues where GOPers might even consider a deal on governing.

Heck, Slate was running a story about how a GOPer has what they consider to be a superior student loan fix proposal to that which Elizabeth Warren has proffered.

Obama could make it his centerpiece for legislative intentions this year, and the GOP would turn on it on a dime and call it everything from reprehensible and unconscionable to unconstitutional, even though it was a GOPer who proposed it and there’s a record overseas of seeing it work. It was the same with ACA; they opposed even even though it came from their own think tanks.

I don’t know a great deal about the political climate of VA-07. But the population in the district is 75% white, only 4% Asian and 5% Hispanic. What the hell are the residents there so freaked out about? They haven’t been “overwhelmed by the inferior dusky hordes of foreign lands.”

Looks like there is no Democrat nominee. Something about failing to register on time or something. He will be running as a write in which isn’t promising.

So how do you think it will play out?

It’s too close to call. After the initial voting Chris McDaniel (the tea party guy) was leading Cochran by about 1500 votes but there was a third GOP guy on the ballot that I think got around 6000 votes. Wherever those votes shift to will determine who wins the runoff. I’m not sure how “Tea Party” the 3rd guy was so I’m not sure how many of the votes for him will shift in that direction.

I do know however that McDaniels’ campaign, as well as some PACs have been working hard to convince us that Cochran is a bleeding heart liberal. I’ve seen mailers painting him as “Obama’s best buddy” and the one that came yesterday was scolding Cochran for having the audacity to vote 27 times to raise the debt ceiling since he took office.

If you’re asking for a gut instinct call? McDaniel. I think he’ll pull it out.

Well, the news out of South Carolina is good:

Lindsey Graham wins primary outright

South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham won his Republican primary on Tuesday, cruising past the 50-percent threshold to avoid a runoff against his tea party-inspired challengers.

The 58-year-old senator faced six Republican challengers in the Palmetto State, but none of those opponents got much traction or raised enough money to become viable.

With 56 percent of precincts reporting, Graham was at 59 percent — well ahead of state Sen. Lee Bright, with 14percent. Rounding out the field were businessman Richard Cash at 8 percent, pastor Det Bowers at 7 percent, businesswoman Nancy Mace at 6 percent, attorney Bill Conner at 5percent and attorney Benjamin Dunn with just 1 percent.

Graham has only token Democratic opposition for a third term serving the deep-red state.

Now Graham can worry less about enraged wingnuts and devote his time once again to getting things done.

I think all the evidence so far points to this being a banner year for the TP, so I think Cochran is finished.

They actually haven’t done that well in the primaries this year. Cantor is only the second House incumbent to lose his/her primary.

In practical terms, this changes little. There is no harm this doof can do that Cantor wasn’t happy to do throughout the Obama administration. A fuck on both their houses.

Dark, at this point the only difference between a “Tea Party” candidate and an “establishment” one is who’s writing the checks. There’s not a bit of difference at this point between the candidates: They all hate Obama, they all think “progressives” are destroying this country, and they think the key is to destroy the country to save it.

re: #268 nines09

Really?

Really really. Before the result were announced today, Cantor was on Capitol Hill casting an important vote:

House passes VA bill

The House approved legislation on Tuesday that gives veterans stuck on long wait lists for medical care the ability to seek treatment outside of the system established by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Sponsored by Committee on Veterans’ Affairs Chairman Jeff Miller (R-Fla.), the bill passed 421-0 with overwhelming support from both parties.

The legislation is a response to systemic problems at the VA outlined in an inspector general report. That study found thousands of veterans are waylaid while seeking treatment in VA facilities - a disclosure that cost Secretary Eric Shinseki his post. The VA said on Monday that more than 57,000 new patients are waiting at least 90 days for their first appointments.

“The number of veterans that have received delayed care from VA facilities or were denied appointments despite being qualified for VA care is both shocking and appalling, and the resignation of former VA Secretary Eric Shinseki will not fix these systemic failures,” said Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee Ed Royce (R-CA), a co-sponsor of the legislation. “This legislation ensures that veterans who cannot get an appointment will still get the care they deserve. It is the least we can do for those who served our country so bravely.”

Tuesday’s measure closely resembles a deal struck by Sens. Bernie Sanders and John McCain last week that would allow veterans to see private doctors if they experience long wait times or live more than 40 miles from a VA hospital. That bill also funding [sic] to hire additional VA nurses and doctors and create 26 new medical facilities for veterans.

Last week, people here were saying the House was just going to stonewall. I am pleased to say I was right that it would in fact take action.

The irony is that Calvin himself would agree with that - he considered predestination a serious theological problem that he tried to solve his whole life and he down played it a much as he could. John Knox, however, took the idea from Calvin and emphasized it while grafting it to his Presbyterian polity and created the utter mess that is called Calvinism to this day.

Meh, it was what he had it do. If he hadn’t pandered, he’d have gotten maybe 38% of the primary vote and would be heading into a runoff that would see him bounced out of his seat. That didn’t happen and as a result the same man is going to hold his seat.

I disagree. In order to act effectively, Graham needs his Senate seat. Pushing back directly would have just gotten him bounced out of it and said push back would have had little if any effect. Sometimes you need to avoid confrontation in order to be able to act later when your chances of opposing the crazies are better.

Really, Graham’s nothing but a sad hack. i’ve said this before and I’ll say it again but I really do respect guys like him and McCain less than I do guys like Cruz and Paul because of exactly that. If Lindsey actually believes in the Benghazi bullshit, fine he’s a nutcase ignoring all evidence but if he is playing it up as DF concedes and I think many here believe than he’s nothing but a man abandoning all principles to satisfy a base of extremists. There’s a reason why John F. Kennedy wrote about Profiles in Courage. Graham’s actions the past five plus years show him to be deserving of a Profile in Cowardice.

Really if this guy is one of your party’s better members then I genuinely weep for your party.
