GOHMERT! Loveable Louie Debates Pastor on Whether Non-Christians “Go to Hell”

Wingnuts • Views: 36,951

Life With Gohmert has been on hiatus as of late, but Louie and the gang are back with a brand new episode called “Use A House of Representatives Hearing to Debate Whether Non-Christians Go to Hell.”

And hilarity does ensue. The kind only GOHMERT! can deliver:

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) on Tuesday repeatedly confronted a faith leader — who also happens to be a noted church-state separatist — about his Christian beliefs during a House Judiciary Committee hearing on religious freedom.

“Do you believe in sharing the good news that will keep people from going to hell, consistent with the Christian beliefs?” Gohmert asked Rev. Barry Lynn, executive director for Americans United for the Separation of Church and State.

Lynn responded that he wouldn’t agree with Gohmert’s “construction of what hell is like or why one gets there.” When Gohmert pressed him to say whether he believed people “would go to hell if they do not believe Jesus is the way,” Lynn again answered that he thinks failing to ascribe to a certain set of Christian beliefs doesn’t necessarily doom a person to hell.

“No, not a set of ideas,” Gohmert insisted. “Either you believe as a Christian that Jesus is the way, the truth, or life, or you don’t.”

“Congressman, what I believe is not necessarily what I think ought to justify the creation of public policy for everybody,” Lynn countered. “For the 2,000 different religions that exist in this country, the 25 million non-believers. I’ve never been offended. I’ve never been ashamed to share my belief.”

Because of all the pressing issues on America’s plate right now, what one religious sect believes about eternal damnation is worth indepth questioning.

Because the Founding Fathers obviously meant for all Americans to accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior, which is why they mentioned it zero times in the founding documents.

I wonder how any rational, thinking person could respond to that question with anything but one of the following:

* uproarious laughter
* blank stare
* blank stare, followed by weeping into hands

That Barry Lynn was able to put one word in front of another means he is rather more stable on his feet than I.

I’d probably screw with Gomer on this question. I’d be like, “no, I believe all non-Christians go to the summit of K2 upon death and listen to Willie Nelson records for all eternity. Except for Zoroastrians. They go to the summit of Damavand and listen to Freddie Mercury records.”

It was a hearing on the State of Religious Liberty in the United States, By Direction of the Chairman of the Subcommittee* on the Constitution and Civil Justice, which would be Rep. Trent Franks.

I assume the purpose is to put something on the old resume for reelection, as well as to get something on the official record, such as Gohmert’s definition of Christianity.

*It’s a subcommittee of the Judiciary Committee, which is chaired by Bob Goodlatte, so wingnuts run wild, it seems.

US Eyes New Aid to Iraq to Curb Insurgent March

Al-Maliki and other Iraqi leaders have pleaded with the Obama administration for more than a year for additional help to combat the growing insurgency, which has been fueled by the unrelenting civil war in neighboring Syria. Northern Iraq has become a way station for insurgents who routinely travel between the two countries and are seeding the Syrian war’s violence in Baghdad and beyond.

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said it’s expected that the U.S. will give Iraq new assistance to combat insurgents but declined to describe it. Beyond the missiles, tanks, fighter jets and ammunition that the U.S. has already either given or plans to send to Iraq, Baghdad has sought American surveillance drones to root out insurgents.

Argentina has a new political party…

Neo-Nazi Party Given Legal Status

Judge Ariel Lijo approved an application by Bandera Vecinal to become a registered political party. This party is led by Alejandro Carlos Biondini, known for his Nazi sympathies.

The nationalist organisation applied before Judge Lijo — who has been under the spotlight as he is in charge of the case against Vice-President Amado Boudou — after it signed up the required 4,000 members. Bandera Vecinal defines itself as neither a left or right wing party, however Biondini’s former party, Nuevo Triunfo, was banned by a Supreme Court ruling in 2009 which considered its symbols and ideas a supporting Nazism and anti-antisemitism.

Biondini’s son, Alejandro César, denied the allegations, saying that Bandera Nacional, which he defines as a “nationalist and socialist party”, is profoundly democratic. “When you talk about family values, nationalism, migration, they accuse you of being a fascist, an ultra right-winger. We don’t identify with ‘Nazi’ politics. This is Argentina and we are proud of our people,” he said. The party expects to take part in next year’s presidential election.

If a force of 30,000 turns and flees from one of 800, then it’s pretty obvious that our time in Iraq was wasted. They don’t want us to teach them how to fight, they want us to do the fighting for them. That way the only thing they have to is regularly bitch about the Yankees who are causing them problems…before running the numbers and realizing all the dollars flooding into their businesses are the only thing keeping their economy going.

I would have preferred we leave behind a stable democracy. I’m not expecting perfection but something along the lines of Iraq. I can understand the confusion of US plutocrats. The US population is so complacent in the face of plutocracy that they think this model can be exported to places like Iraq just by making sure that the right people are put in charge after deposing the dictator.

It never seems to occur to them that the support for such regimes tends to evaporate as soon as the US troops are gone.

Yup, I think that’s a good example and very comparable situations between Iraq and Afghanistan. Iraq was politically stable but weak. They could have probably handled their own domestic problems but the civil war in Syria is the main source of their problems now.

Iraq War III Has Now Begun

Working from a secure base in Syria’s Raqqa province, ISIS seems to have carefully prepared operations in Mosul and a range of other cities as the opener to this year’s Ramadan offensive — a twisted annual tradition in Iraq since 2003, timed to coincide with the Islamic holy month that spans the length of July this year.

Formerly known as al Qaeda in Iraq, ISIS is an Iraqi-led militant group that draws its suicide operators primarily from international volunteers, its foot soldiers from Iraq and Syria, and its money chiefly from a mix of local organized crime rackets. ISIS has used the Syrian conflict to build its strength and assert its independence from al Qaeda’s senior leadership in Pakistan, which disavowed it in February 2014. But the movement’s real ambitions rest in Iraq. The majority of ISIS’s leadership and rank and file are Iraqi, including its emir Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Control of western Mosul would place ISIS in charge of the political and economic capital of Sunni Iraq, a prize of tremendous propaganda value.

Iraq doesn’t stand a chance with an unstable Syria next door. Afghanistan stands even less of a chance with Pakistan next door.

What part of “65% Shia, 32% Sunni” was unclear to the idiots in the Bush administration that thought toppling Saddam Hussein meant ‘mission accomplished’?

People in his White House actually had to be briefed on what Sunni and Shiite Muslims were…including Mr C plus at Harvard W Bush.

He made a point of leaving out most of the experienced hands from his dad’s days. Instead, we got kids from Falwell’s university being sent to the Green Zone to make rules for the new Iraqi stock exchange (true) while the country turned into a Hobbesian nightmare under the CPA and Paul Bremer.

According to OCE, Stockman accepted campaign contributions from two congressional staff members in February 2013. The campaign’s subsequent campaign finance reports identified the donors as family members of the employees. Stockman also allegedly was paying those two staff members full-time salaries when they were only doing part-time work.

Two staff launderers; swanky.

Yup, I think that’s a good example and very comparable situations between Iraq and Afghanistan. Iraq was politically stable but weak. They could have probably handled their own domestic problems but the civil war in Syria is the main source of their problems now.

Iraq War III Has Now Begun

Iraq doesn’t stand a chance with an unstable Syria next door. Afghanistan stands even less of a chance with Pakistan next door.

So… why did you wish we’d left behind a stable government? You’re saying they don’t have a chance, but a few weeks ago you were talking about what good shape Iraq is in. And since you think Afghanistan doesn’t have a chance either, what does it matter what state the government is in?

I hope I can get this comment in under all those evil cat eyes watching the progress of this thread.

On Chris ‘Tweety’ Matthews a few minutes ago he had Matt Kibbe from Freedom Works and another Republican strategist (didn’t get his name) and they concluded with last nights dumping of Cantor…there will be no further ‘moderate’ Republican presidential candidates for 2016.

If that is true then the party as it used to be is dead, dead and more dead. As some have been saying, it is now THE Tea Party.

Hey Dark_Falcon, here is your chance to leave the party. Just say the GOP is dead and you will have nothing to do with the rag-tag remnants that killed it.

By the way, I am hearing a lot of comments about Cantor getting dumped because of a dump all pols effort. I mentioned that last evening. We shall see how enamored the VA district is to its new Tea Man.

Oh god no….Joke Scarborough is on now…time to go throw up.

It was written Pre-2000. As best as I can remember it had nothing to do with installing democracy in the Middle East as its main concern was US not taking China and Russia seriously as threats in the post-Cold War era.

After 9/11, the people responsible for it added in all that spread democracy stuff to their world view.

What I remember best from the PNAC manifesto was delusional blathering about the desirability and feasibility of perpetual US global military hegemony.

They’re still going to spread more fear. And fear gets attention.

Fear appeals to the uneducated, the old, the ignorant, and the stupid.

We have a lot of work to do. We think just because we know a lot of political sites and comment here and there that others do. We’re just a drop in the barrel, really, since we can provide plenty of links that show just how these people actually “think”.

Don’t forget, too, that more people access the internet for porn and entertainment than they ever do politics, which bores them and might require some work, and in too many cases, already have their minds made up because “we’ve always voted this way”, if they vote at all.

If I sound cynical, it’s because every time I think there will be some progress in politics, we take 1 step forward and 2 steps back.

I still remember that horrible “Project for a New American Century” document that came out in the Bush years.

The foundation of the new Pax Americana.

Unlike the old one which (mostly) tried to make sure that our allies were on board when violence at an international level was needed the new one was, “Follow or get out of the way.”

In my mind Iraq was meant by the neo-cons as an object lesson for the rest of the world. “This is what happened to people to get in our way. You may hate as long as you also fear.”

It was straight out of the Hollywood vision of the Old West. A gunslinger walks into town, shoots somebody and announces, “There ain’t no law in this here town ‘ceptin’ what I say there is.” Because that was the main thrust of Iraq, to overturn international law and replace it with American rule, forever. Richard Perle made that very clear.

Not soon, I suspect. This jackass could be in the House for several terms.

True, but I mention America growing sick of him. You are probably right that his district will keep him in for a time. I am thinking America in general will not like him. He will be looked at as another Tea Nut crazy wingnut. It is a hope that a guy like this will further paint the GOP in a bad light nationally and maybe even start to make people more aware of them statewide and in districts.

The key for the Democrats is to turn out the vote this fall. There are gains to be had, but they need to motivate people to go out and keep Republicans out to prevent getting your own Tea Nut in your district because they may be coming. The GOP needs to be dipped heavily in the crazy tea. Like many here are saying, the Republican Party is THE Tea Party. Make that a bad thing and make it a major point.

On Padgett’s Facebook page, the 15-year-old liked two tactical knife companies, M4 assault rifles and political pages such as ‘Conservative American Military Veterans Against Barack Obama’ and ‘We WILL NOT Be Disarmed.’

These strong pro-gun opinions may have been inherited from his family. His brother-in-law Andrew Cooper wrote on Facebook that school shootings could be prevented with more armed guards.

‘Dear President Obama, here, I’ll help you out to create jobs a little, oh and more importantly- SAVE LIVES; advise the states to employ at least 2 specially trained police officers to constantly patrol all school campuses from kindergarden [sic] through all colleges. Duh,’ Cooper wrote in December 2012.

…On Padgett’s Facebook page, the 15-year-old liked two tactical knife companies, M4 assault rifles and political pages such as ‘Conservative American Military Veterans Against Barack Obama’ and ‘We WILL NOT Be Disarmed.’

He’s probably not a right-winger though. We can’t call him that. He must be mentally ill.

Notice the date on this. Four months later (at least that was admitted, or was it earlier?), Snowjob contacted GG, at least he says not anonymously (which he did in late 2012).

cuindependent.com

I detest the description of GG as a “liberal”, though. And exactly how many “civil rights” cases did he actually work? I can think of one, Matthew F. Hale. Any others he might have done, well, we have to take his word on. And his word isn’t worth a whole lot, as we have discovered.

“Glenn Greenwald, a liberal writer and former Constitutional and civil rights litigator, participated in the panel and spoke about the constitutional amendments currently under attack.”

And look who he was hanging out with, BTW, since this was a conservative meeting promoted and held by Young Americans for Liberty, formed at the end of Ron Paul’s campaign in 2008.

Jack Hunter, a conservative talk radio personality and contributor to The American Conservative magazine

More whacked out cant from The Brat. Who obviously doesn’t believe anything at all in the Constitution, including the “common” good.

“He frets about the state of morality in schools and about Beyoncé:

“For the first 13 years of your kid’s life, we teach them no religion, no philosophy, and no ethics…Who is our great moral teachers these days? Every generation has always had great theologians or philosophers by the century that you can name. Who do we got right now? [Audience: Jay-Z] Right. Right. [Audience: Beyoncé] Right. Beyoncé. When you can’t name a serious philosopher, a national name, or a serious theologian, or a serious religious leader, at the national level, your culture’s got a major problem. We got a major problem.”

motherjones.com

[bolding mine]

I note that he wants to teach your kids his religion. You teaching his kids your beliefs? Probably not so much.
I thought these guys didn’t want the state involved in teaching this stuff that ought to be the family’s responsibility?

These strong pro-gun opinions may have been inherited from his family. His brother-in-law Andrew Cooper wrote on Facebook that school shootings could be prevented with more armed guards.

‘Dear President Obama, here, I’ll help you out to create jobs a little, oh and more importantly- SAVE LIVES; advise the states to employ at least 2 specially trained police officers to constantly patrol all school campuses from kindergarden [sic] through all colleges. There is a fair sized Mennonite (not Amish, but simular) presence here where I live. I often see them when I’m out cycling, you can tell the houses easy from the road since there are no utility lines running into them from the road.

It took me quite a while to figure out what the weird wear marks on the road were, it’s from the steel bands on wheels of their buggies.

I see them all the time in Walmart, they don’t drive cars, but they do drive tractors, so they hook up a trailer behind the wagon, with a storage shed on that. That way they can drive into town, everybody rides in comfort.

Deputies respond to courthouse threat

SAN ANTONIO — Extra deputies, some wielding assault rifles, were posted outside Bexar County’s courthouse complex Wednesday afternoon after someone reportedly made threats against the courts and a specific judge.
“This is an ongoing investigation, but we have determined the threat is not imminent,” Bexar County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Rosanne Hughes said. “We’re still on high alert.”
A male called the Commissioners Court offices, but was looking for a judge, at about 1:35 p.m., Hughes said. He threatening violence against the courthouse in general and the judge if he wasn’t allowed to speak to the official, she said.
Authorities declined to identify which judge was singled out by the caller or to say whether the identity of the caller is known. The nature of the threat also wasn’t immediately disclosed.
The Bexar County Courthouse, Cadena Reeves Justice Center and Elizondo Tower were not evacuated.

You call that old? When I was in high school some of us got to go over to SRI (Stanford Research Institute) one evening and play on the computer. It would type out stuff on paper, and you would answer the questions by typing-with the text showing up on the same paper. One exchange was something about the capital of Italy and you could answer “Rome” or “Roma.” If the latter you were not only told you were right, but got a comment about “an Italian answer like that was fine.” Or some such.

Hey, everybody’s talking about old old computers. Does anybody remember this? Is it real?

First computer I used and figured out was my dad’s Apple IIe. I played a lot of Oregon Trail, Carmen San Diego, various geography trivia games, and in the 3rd grade I typed a letter to then-President George H.W. Bush asking him why we had to go to war in Iraq on that machine. His office actually responded with a cookie-cutter letter from some White House minion saying “Thank you Charlie, the president is very busy, we appreciate your feedback” and a picture of George and Barbara with their signatures on the bottom (not real signatures, printed).

That shit is sitting somewhere in a box in my basement with all my other papers. I should dig it out and photo it for tomorrow’s #ThrowbackThursday. Nah! That involves wading in a bunch of junk and endless papers.

For the most part those ancient “puters will do the same thing today that they did when new. That is if they still work, batteries, power units.

That’s why I’m pissed off I got rid of mine. It worked fine, and I had some really ancient classic software for it.

For example, the first graphic Adventure program, Mystery House, from Sierra On-Line. It was a real POS, but for the time it was amazing.

Do old people in the digital age reminisce about old computers?

I reminisce about cursive writing ,,, with a fountain pen!!

Hey, everybody’s talking about old old computers. Does anybody remember this? Is it real?

[Embedded content]

I think it is real, but a prototype that was never actually produced for sale.

My cat is sad because he worries that gadgets have feelings & feel abandoned when we exchange them for newer models. ]

My daughter taught semi-hardened criminals at the county lock-up. She said the most emotional group reaction she ever got was for a program on the abandonment of one of the Mars rovers.

RBS

Some Mennonite sects drive cars with black exterior paint and the chrome trim painted black.

426 b_sharp  Jun 11, 2014 8:12:23pm

I still have in storage:
Atari 600
Atari 1200
Atari 520 ST
2 Atari 5-1/4 drives
1 Atari 3-1/2 drive
1 Atari dot matrix printer.
A box of Atari cartridges
A box of 5-1/4 disks with several different Atari OS versions

Why?

Our desks had inkwells, and were bolted to the floor on ‘runners’ like a bobsled.

Wasn’t the TRS-80 the introduction of Visicalc? Precursor to Excel?

As I recall Visicalc came out on the Apple II first with other computers shortly thereafter.

The code was so similar that conversion took very little effort.

Devil’s devices. The lid raised, but could also be held up a couple inches by a steel rod. I sat on one and curled my fingertips under the lid when the rod collapsed.

re: #384 Bear

Apple 2 was a color machine. TRS-80 B&W only. Then was the portable Kaypro. Needed a 2 ton truck to move it!! O/S was C/PM.

I had a TI 99/4 then a 99/4A. Data held on cassette player. First recorder I had didn’t have a counter for the tape, so finding the programs was a pain until I went and bought one with a counter to position the tape close to where the data started. Hooked to a B&W TV.

447 BeenHereAwhile  Jun 11, 2014 8:23:31pm

re: #391 Skip Intro

Before the Kaypro there was the Osborne 1. Probably 1000 times heavier than a cell phone with .0001% of the power.

Good times.

I still have my Compaq portable sewing machine.

Used it to log into MCI mail, then got a shell account.
