President Obama: US Will Not Send Troops to Iraq, Considering Other Options

No good options
Middle East • Views: 46,498

In a statement this morning, President Obama said he will not be sending US troops to Iraq, but did not rule out other types of military action such as airstrikes.

Speaking just before leaving for North Dakota, Obama told reporters that Iraqi leaders would have to reach a political solution to the sectarian divide in their country by making compromises with their opponents.

“We can’t do it for them,” the president said, repeating the same phrase a few minutes later.

The insurgent group, which calls itself the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), “poses a danger to Iraq and its people,” Obama said. “And given the nature of these terrorists, it could pose a threat, eventually, to American interests as well.”

Obama said the insurgents’ recent gains should serve as “a wake-up call” to the Iraqi government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, and he cautioned that he would not exercise any military option until Iraq’s leaders demonstrated their commitment to bridging differences between sectarian groups.

In other news, the Pentagon is reportedly moving the aircraft carrier George H.W. Bush into the Persian Gulf.

Congress to create special supercommittee to investigate situation in regard to confirmed deserter/traitor Bowe Bergdahl Benghazi Iraq, to collect information, determine facts and impeach Obama.

IOW, he’s preparing for the least bad option available to him.

And the GOP will dissemble his comments by claiming he’s losing (or lost) Iraq by not sending in troops (even though they’d be complaining all the same if he did).

The Iraqi government has to do more on its own behalf to get the situation under control, and the US can help with the military aspects, but this is as much about the sociopolitical situation across the country as it is about ISIS gaining territory.

ISIS wouldn’t be in the position it is currently in if the military were cohesive and the personnel were eager to fight on behalf of the government. They’re not. That is a huge vote of no confidence in the Maliki government. It’s also up to the Iraqi govt to figure out how to fix that; and speed is of the essence.

5 klys  Jun 13, 2014 10:53:18am

Man, how refreshing is it to have a President who actually considers the cost of actions, including the indirect costs of things like …enabling a government that really needs to be able to stand on its own if it is going to have legitimacy?

Of course, from the circle-jerk by certain folks downstairs, you wouldn’t have any idea. But I appreciate all the sane Lizards.

6 GeneJockey  Jun 13, 2014 10:55:53am

If I read this right, it’s like this:

Maliki: Barack! Save my ass!

Obama: Prove to me that it’s worth saving.

Pipsqueak says what?

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio: ‘Both Congress and the Pentagon have been warning the White House about the worsening situation in Iraq … It’s long past time for the president to lay out a plan for how we can reverse the momentum and spread of terrorism in Iraq’ - statement via @NBCNews
End of alert

Sorry, JB, but we’re not sending in the troops to satisfy your defense industry friends.

And again…

The “Unsafe Abortion Protection Act” will require that any doctor who performs more than five abortions per year “have active admitting privileges at a hospital that is located not further than thirty miles from the location at which the abortion is performed or induced and that provides obstetrical or gynecological health care services.”

Jindal said the law “will give women the health and safety protections they deserve, and continue to make Louisiana a state that values individual human life.”

However, the admission privileges the new law requires doctors to have are difficult to come by, because they are largely business decisions based on how many beds a doctor can fill. Because of the low rate of complications associated with abortions, it is difficult for abortion providers to meet the minimum number of admissions required to obtain the privilege.

It is impossible for our society to deal with complex issues, like Iraq, it appears, based on what is blaring through the various media.

Take this for example:

A Simple and Useful Guide to Understanding the Conflict in Iraq

Because we need it simple.

But it comes across more like simpleton - this from that article:

Can You Remind Me About Sunnis, Shiites, and Kurds Quickly?

Yes. This is tricky but important. There are three main groups in Iraq: Sunni Arabs, Shiite Arabs and Sunni Kurds.

Sunni and Shiite are different sects of Islam, a religion.

Kurd is an ethnic group, like Arab or Indian or Caucasian.
[…]

The culture wars are toxic.

“Culture War” is a MBF term designed to hide the fact that you have groups of people demanding their rights, and others who fight to deny those rights. “Culture War” makes it sound like “Both Sides Do It”, and plays into the idea that not being able to deny others the rights you enjoy is the same as having your own rights infringed.

So, in those specific respects, Joe the Plumber has a point. He obviously needs a lesson in decorum; his absolutist message cries out for subtlety; but the principle that government must prove its case before trumping constitutional rights is perfectly valid.

Apparently we are all just supposed to wait for the other side to die off/public opinion to change and then we get our rights. Instead of, you know, recognizing the very real and detrimental impact that not having those rights in the here-and-now has.

Of course, from his comments KT doesn’t have to worry about any of these problems and as such it’s all an abstract to him.

It is also true that the people who first started with the “culture war” rhetoric are extremist reactionaries intent on undoing decades of progress for women, minorities, gays, etc., etc.

To set off a war, it is sufficient to have one side intent on doing so. So let’s have it out. Either the American Taliban win and we end up with a theocracy, or they lose and we can get back to debating real political issues as opposed to culture war bullshit.

They’re spicy, but not hot and the flesh of the mangoes is very soft & kind of tangy-sour—a nice complement to the oil and strong curry flavor. The work great as a side dish or condiment.

Well no one is forcing your church to perform the marriage. Fundie zealots can’t handle gay people being on their postage stamps for crying out loud without them flipping the hell out. That is very misleading. The “water” isn’t really water but rather hydroxide ions, part of Ringwoodite.

It’s not an ocean, it’s a rock. The rock can change as it moves upwards, and eventually the hydroxide ions can separate and form water that can then reach the surface through lava flows, volcanoes, and such.

Many silly headlines on this one today.

I’d like to ask them how the 1000 year Reich was supposed to work if all the Nazis were as they believe gay. But I always like to turn their logic on them and point out that heterosexual Christians far outnumbered gay non-Christians in the Third Reich and no one is using that as rationale for making that group second class citizens. That’s usually when they make some crap up about how gay marriage discriminates against them. They have no real valid argument against allowing gay couples the same equality under the law as heterosexual ones- only their own bigotry and bigotry should never be the basis for law.

OT: Postman just brought my 1 kilo jar of Pakistani mango pickles. I don’t otherwise like mangoes, but these things nom, nom, nom… They’re chopped up and preserved in curry, spices, and oil. They’re spicy, but not hot and the flesh of the mangoes is very soft & kind of tangy-sour—a nice complement to the oil and strong curry flavor. The work great as a side dish or condiment.

They’re not gonna win any beauty pageants, but that’s okay as long as they taste good (excuse the somewhat blurry pic):

Mago pickles

Screw the culture wars—I have mango pickles and you guys don’t, so there. Time to go eat some… BBL

Those do sound good. The way you describe them, I could see doing something with lamb and using those as an accent, or perhaps as part of a sauce. We’ve got an international grocer not too far from the office, I’ll have to ask him next time I go down there about them.

They aren’t any better at fighting an insurgency than the next. Those ISIS militant/terrorists have been fighting in Syria for the last 2+ years, and are using the porous border to flow into Iraq. 500 Iranian troops is barely sufficient to patrol a decent sized town in the throes of an insurgency, let alone hold thousands of square miles (because how many of those troops are actually going to be patrolling versus the supply chain back to Iran).

ISIS’s Secret Allies
The Iraqi extremist group didn’t conquer a major chunk of the country on their own. They had help - from ex-Saddamites, tribal councils, and other militants.

All eyes have been on ISIS as the jihadist group, in a matter of days, cut Iraq in half and declared its own state in the cities it captured. With fewer than 10,000 fighters ISIS forced the retreat of the better-armed Iraqi army forces many times its size. Their incredible success on the battlefield has fed into a growing lore about the group: the small band of fanatics that can take down a country. The truth is more basic and it’s something ISIS doesn’t want to admit—they weren’t acting alone.

Wrong headline of the day:

Study: Vast Underground Ocean Discovered Near Earth’s Core

That is very misleading. The “water” isn’t really water but rather hydroxide ions, part of Ringwoodite.

It’s not an ocean, it’s a rock. The rock can change as it moves upwards, and eventually the hydroxide ions can separate and form water that can then reach the surface through lava flows, volcanoes, and such.

Many silly headlines on this one today.

The original paper is here:

“Culture War” is a MBF term designed to hide the fact that you have groups of people demanding their rights, and others who fight to deny those rights. “Culture War” makes it sound like “Both Sides Do It”, and plays into the idea that not being able to deny others the rights you enjoy is the same as having your own rights infringed.

The way I look at it is one side (non-whites, women, LGBT people etc.) gathered under the title of liberal are looking to get the rights that are ensured to them under the Constitution.

The other side, claiming to be conservatives, are fighting to ensure that power stays in their hands.

When the left talks, it talks about rights and freedom. When the right talks, it talks about power and denying it to those they deem unworthy.

If anything called out for a freakin’ congressional investigation it would be the former administration’s handling of the run up to the war. Benghazi is a minor pimple in the scheme of things compared to the systemic gangrenous rot that is the Iraq War. Karma demands that Cheney be water-boarded.
