Remember this guy?

Mitt Romney poses with anti-Muslim hate group leader Pamela Geller

Yes, he’s popping up again like a malevolent right wing jack-in-the-box, predictably calling President Obama all kinds of names and boasting about how he would have solved everything by… well, he actually never gets around to saying how he would do that.

I’m guessing it involves WAR, the all-purpose Republican response to foreign policy issues.

Mitt Romney Slams Leadership of Clinton, Obama at Donor meeting:

“He and his people will try to hide from their record,” Romney said. “Hillary Clinton said on Wednesday that some world leaders ‘may not be happy’ when they read her new book,” Romney said, adding that she singled out Putin.

“Please,” Romney said. “This from the woman who was gushing with smiles when she presented his minion with her red reset button.” …

“Jihadism and extremism are surging and on the rise in the Middle East and Africa. The Taliban is not defeated in Afghanistan,” Romney said as he spoke to his former donors in a theater-in-the-round setting. “And tragically, all that we fought for in Iraq, all that 4,500 American lives were shed to gain, is on the cusp of vanishing.”

Can’t Mitt do something remotely positive with all the time and money at his disposal? Make the world a better place in some small way? What a waste of humanity.

A lot of people, after the brief success of the ‘surge’ in stabilizing things militarily in Iraq, decided that Iraq was solved and everything was good. And they promptly stopped paying much attention to Iraq, and so they didn’t notice the endemic corruption, the increased sectarianism on the government’s part, and especially the breakdown in the justice system that saw many people disappeared and tortured.

Iraq’s government, despite what people like McCain and Romney need to tell themselves, was never stable, was never ‘won’.

FWIW… I don’t think that’s red-eye caused by the flash reflecting. I think it’s actually a photo showing the evil and hatred burning in her soul.

After all the Romney family sacrificed in back in the 2003 invasion and subsequent occupation and his leading the way with his multistep plan for peace in the Middle East, you just knew Mitt was going to take the news coming out of of Iraq hard.

“This is the nature of war, whose stake is at once the game and the authority and the justification. Seen so, war is the truest form of divination. It is the testing of one’s will and the will of another within that larger will which because it binds them is therefore forced to select. War is the ultimate game because war is at last a forcing of the unity of existence.War is god.”

“The good news is that we have a volunteer Army and that’s the way we’re going to keep it,” Romney told some 200 people gathered in an abbey near the Mississippi River that had been converted into a hotel. “My sons are all adults and they’ve made decisions about their careers and they’ve chosen not to serve in the military and active duty and I respect their decision in that regard.”

He added: “One of the ways my sons are showing support for our nation is helping me get elected because they think I’d be a great president.”

It was stable enough that the US wouldn’t keep hemorrhaging troops (which was enough for the politicians to claim victory, or at least honorable exit under the circumstances). But without the SOFA, the US backstop left, and the Iraqi forces have shown that they were not interested in protecting a government many saw as not protecting their interests, was more interested in sectarian gain (or violence), and did little to improve the economic plight of most Iraqis.

Former state party Vice Chairman Robin Armstrong of Friendswood moderated a panel discussion on minority outreach.

He remembered Said as a “very appealing, nice, polite young lady.”

“I had to tell her,” he said a little sheepishly, “that I don’t know of much Muslim outreach.”

He mentioned the party’s scattered Muslim precinct chairs, which would include Southlake City Council member Shahid Shafi, the target of Haussmann’s wrath.

Armstrong used the word Islamists. He said: “I use Muslims and Islamists interchangeably. I thought they meant the same thing.”

Uh — no.

(Might be a good topic for the next minority outreach.)

The point about the reset button is beyond dumb. Should the US have tried to be the bad cop? For what purpose? Sure, Putin eventually shitted all over this gesture of goodwill, but that’s the point - he did, not Obama or Hillary. And the latter did everything right in that case, unlike, say, Bush, who looked into Putin’s eyes and saw his beautiful soul. I don’t remember the wingnuts complaining about that.

What’s Romney’s idea of diplomacy anyway?

Iraq’s government, despite what people like McCain and Romney need to tell themselves, was never stable, was never ‘won’.

Al-Maliki was always a stooge for the Iranians.

Fareed Zakaria: Who lost Iraq? The Iraqis did, with an assist from George W. Bush

The insurgency the Maliki government faces today was utterly predictable because, in fact, it happened before. From 2003 onward, Iraq faced a Sunni insurgency that was finally tamped down by Gen. David Petraeus, who said explicitly at the time that the core element of his strategy was political, bringing Sunni tribes and militias into the fold. The surge’s success, he often noted, bought time for a real power-sharing deal in Iraq that would bring the Sunnis into the structure of the government.

A senior official closely involved with Iraq in the Bush administration told me, “Not only did Maliki not try to do broad power-sharing, he reneged on all the deals that had been made, stopped paying the Sunni tribes and militias, and started persecuting key Sunni officials.” Among those targeted were the vice president of Iraq and its finance minister.

I would have preferred to see a small American force in Iraq to try to prevent the country’s collapse. But let’s remember why this force is not there. Maliki refused to provide the guarantees that every other country in the world that hosts U.S. forces offers. Some commentators have blamed the Obama administration for negotiating badly or halfheartedly and perhaps this is true. But here’s what a senior Iraqi politician told me in the days when the U.S. withdrawal was being discussed: “It will not happen. Maliki cannot allow American troops to stay on. Iran has made very clear to Maliki that its No. 1 demand is that there be no American troops remaining in Iraq. And Maliki owes them.” He reminded me that Maliki spent 24 years in exile, most of them in Tehran and Damascus, and his party was funded by Iran for most of its existence. And in fact, Maliki’s government has followed policies that have been pro-Iranian and pro-Syrian.

At one time, Muslim Americans were considered a relatively reliable GOP voting bloc. They tend towards social conservatism and a good many of them are entrepreneurs. In the 80s, I can recall quite a few Muslim Americans proudly noting they voted for President Reagan; one chap I knew, a business owner, even proudly displayed a photo of him and President Reagan.

Way to go, GOP. Keep up the good work - if their track record holds, pretty soon they’ll have 100% of that ancient, rural white Christian fundamentalist vote!

And precious little else.

When you look at the timeline of “the Surge” it’s also clear that Bush used it to take credit for work done primarily by the Sunni Awakening Councils. Many of those same groups are now helping ISIS because Maliki froze them out of power, preferring to promote and appoint people primarily within his own Shia base of support.

GOP establishment vs. the GOP base should be interesting in 2016. If the nuts can unite behind a true believer, that should suffice to win the nomination. So if Romney does run in 2016, it would pretty much have to be as one of the nuts, which would be greatly entertaining. Lyndon LaRouche indeed.

It’ll be interesting to see if the wingnuts can unify behind one candidate early. They might, and I could see Ted Cruz as being acceptable enough to the majority of the Teahadis to pass muster.

I don’t see why not. The Teahadis unified behind five or six candidates early last cycle, discarding each in turn after they opened their mouth and derp flew out.

Crazy idea: maybe the Sunday talk shows should include some of the people who were, you know, actually right about Iraq, WMDs, etc.

I keep thinking “Please proceed” is going to wear out its welcome. It’s not.

If the chuckleheaded McCain gang wants to go on national television and explain how it’s so very important to their party’s vision for the US that we go get more of our kids shot up in Iraq, who am I to stop them?

Particularly since Iraq can’t field an army and the present government is apparently backsliding on all the power-sharing deal between various factions.

My view is that the US shouldn’t lift a finger until the Iraqi government meaningfully addresses both these issues. Happily, it seems that is also the official US position.

I expect 2016 for the GOP to be the usual scene, with plenty of wingnuts and one or two “mainstream” candidates. If the old rules apply and the next-in-line is based on past entries, then Santorum would win but he may be a bit too religious for some of the money men.

It’s the Democrats in 2016 which look to be a real quandry. Clinton and Biden are not going to be that fresh, no matter how their supports will try to convince everyone else that both deserve to be President. I’m hoping a Democratic governor comes out of fog and ends up leading the charge, but I don’t know if the Dems have a well-known enough politician on deck.

Because long rifles are the perfect weapons for CQB situations.

If you’re firing your rifle and your target isn’t double digit yards/meters away, its called a carnival attraction, not a shooting range

Let’s not forget that this fetish for all war all the time is one of the pillars of movement conservatism.

In other words, this warmongering would remain even if the GOP were significantly cleaned up by ridding it of its creationists, confederates and assorted other cranks.

Battle site zeroing of an M-16A2 was roughly 20-30 yards, since due to the ballistic arc, it would be hitting the same point at roughly 300 yards

You know, it wouldn’t even bother me if guys like Romney weren’t so eager to send other peopel’s kids to war. None of his sons have served. What a cowardly bunch Mitt and his whole immediate family are.

You left out the best part… in 1969, he was photographed leading a pro-draft rally at Stanford, as counter-demonstrators to the anti-draft folks. He got his entire College Republicans chapter to turn out in support of that position.

McCain’s ramblings though are a good reminder while the TP/Brat wing of the party are nuts that the establishment is just as bad. McCain has never met an armed conflict he hasn’t want us involved in. I am glad he opens his mouth though because he always reminds me how glad I am that I did not vote for him and his even more insane running mate.

I didn’t bring that up because just thinking about that fact angers me.

It always amuses me when RWNJs get all hot and bothered about accusations of chickenhawking. It’s so often true, and their reactions make it apparent the charge stings.

What’s always upset me about the chickenhawks is the arrogance of them. Cheney claiming ot have other priorities. Gee, Dick, I’m sure the guys who went in your place would have rather been somewhere else too. Or Mitt acting like he so badly wanted to be there. What was stopping you, chickenshit?

It’s a common RWNJ talking point. We had Iraq pacified to the point where they were having drum circles and maypole dances in the middle of Baghdad, then Obama had to ruin it all.

You know, because the invasion was perfectly executed and we built a stable Iraq in the aftermath.

It’s because they know, deep down, that they really don’t give a shit that they’re willing to send other people to die for their own selfish ends; they also know that if they had any shame or remorse, they would likely eat a bullet, yet self-preservation is strong with them.

Indeed. It’s a delicious combination of shame and imperfect denial. They really are chickens that want other people to die for their war-lust.

Romney would have solved all of America’s problems by being a Republican President, instead of the Democrat President we have, of course.

And the evidence of it is that Fox and its sheep would have praised and defended whatever he did instead of attacking it.
