By the eyes of the very young
It’s a sudden good attack
Born of weakness my horse and I
Carry anger forth and back
But we’ll make it somehow
You’ve all what’s mine
And you’re leading me now

On the gallop to mother’s field
We will lose our breath and fight
And you give me the look of thorns
We give liars every night
But I get you somehow
Leave the reins inside
‘Cause you’re leading me now

Every time we wonder
What we left back in your heart
Could you see we’re dreaming
Though our minds just fall apart

To the side where I flew from you
When your pace just scared me blind
We will come back and joke of days
When I sold you to the unkind
But we’ll end up somehow
With a peaceful mind
And you’re leading me now

Every time we wonder
What we left back in your heart
Could you see we’re dreaming
Though our kindness fall apart
But we will end up somehow
With a peaceful mind
And you’re leading me now

Tasty food easy:

Peel, seed, and dice one cucumber.
Dice one avocado.

Mix with feta cheese, salt, and just enough balsamic vinegar to coat.

Eat. Nom nom nom.

The combination of the Sunni militias’ on-the-ground intelligence about their onetime AQI allies and American firepower proved devastating to al Qaeda’s Iraqi franchise. And so, between 2006 and 2008, AQI shrank from an insurgent organization that controlled territory larger than the size of New England to a rump terrorist group.

But AQI did not disappear. It simply bided its time. The Syrian civil war provided a staging point over the past three years for its resurrection and transformation into the “Islamic State of Iraq and Syria,” or ISIS. And now ISIS has marched back into western and northern Iraq. Only this time there is no U.S. military to stop it.

More importantly Al Maliki completely froze out the Sunni Awakening Councils who were the ones mostly responsible for the results Bush’s Surge took credit for. Now the Sunni councils see the Iraqi government as an enemy, because Maliki’s government is basically for Shias only. This is also why Malikis Army has so easily crumbled, because he’s refused for something like eight years to integrate other ethnic groups or issue appointments and promotions based on skill and expertise. Instead it’s all about who one knows within the existing Shia power infrastructure.

First Bush and Bremmer fired the Iraqi army and made needless enemies out of thousands of trained soldiers, that caused years of insurgency. Now the government they put in place has raised de Bathification from an understandable transitional anti-corruption measure into a de facto exclusion of the Sunni population from most positions of real power or influence. Unfortunately a lot of those Sunnis are the one’s with actual hands on military leadership experience and education, systematically denying them positions within army and government has resulted in a talent drain that probably hasn’t been seen since Stalin’s purges.

16 goddamnedfrank  Jun 13, 2014 10:10:35pm
President Barack Obama has made U.S. military help for Iraq’s beleaguered government contingent on fundamental changes by Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, who for eight years has resisted American calls for a more inclusive government.

Putting the onus to act on Maliki could give Obama a reason to avoid a resumption of American military involvement in Iraq, current and former administration officials said. The Shiite Muslim leader’s divisive ruling style, which marginalized minority Sunnis, helped pave the way for the jihadists’ blitzkrieg this week.

While ending Iraq’s sectarian strife is essential to defeating the insurgents, Maliki’s record of corruption and misrule leaves little room for optimism, they added. Instead, Maliki may turn to Shiite militias and Iran for support, possibly fueling a wider sectarian war.

I think Obama’s got the right idea here. Iraq isn’t our problem anymore, so if we’re going to help it needs to be with some assurance that fundamental changes take place. Otherwise we’ll be bailing their asses out forever.

Milwaukee John Doe probe looks into multiple votes by Shorewood man

During the 2012 recall election of Walker, Monroe voted at least six times: once from a Shorewood home he shares with his girlfriend; once from a home in Milwaukee that is part of a family trust; once from each of those addresses using absentee ballots, and voting absentee using the name of his son and his girlfriend’s son.

Monroe also allegedly voted multiple times in the 2012 election from Milwaukee and Shorewood then driving to Indiana, where he voted using a home he owns there as his residence.

The pic I took tonight has a temporarily beautiful aesthetic to it. I’m not a photographer, so…I just stood there and watched the planet rotate in real time for about 20 minutes. It was gorgeous. And indeed it was a Honey Moon, it had that honey tint to it for about 45 minutes tonight. My best lunar observation in quite some time.

Scott Walker: My views on same-sex marriage don’t matter

Gov. Scott Walker has a history of forcefully opposing same-sex marriage in Wisconsin, but in the wake of the state’s ban on gay marriages being found unconstitutional, the Republican leader said Thursday that his own views about the issue do not matter.

Walker, who is running for re-election this year and eyeing a bid for president in 2016, continued to largely duck questions about the state’s ban he voted for in 2006, as hundreds of gay couples wed in the last week and polls show public attitudes shifting in favor of allowing same-sex marriages.

We’re seeing more of this. The GOP candidate for Governor of Illinois has also been gutlessly dodging this question for months.

These guys see themselves as stuck, needing the votes of abject bigots to win but also needing to con their way into getting as many socially moderate / fiscally conservative votes as possible. They can’t voice support either way without alienating voters they’ll almost certainly need to win.

What’s fucked up is that this is what leadership looks like in the GOP today, a craven refusal to take a stand on a fundamental issue of civil rights and equality under the law, out of sheer political expedience. What’s funny is that this used to be the exact thing people dinged Bill Clinton for, triangulating his way through issues, using focus testing to come up with a stance. Only here the stubborn refusal to voice an actual position is the stance.

Appealing to the middle to win! Smart playbook! Refusing to get distracted by side issues! Eleventy!

Honestly, I have zero respect for anyone who weasels around on same sex marriage. Either you support full legal equality and civil rights for LGBT people full stop or you don’t. Period. Refusing to take a stand for political expediency is a sign that you’re a fucking coward.

This isn’t rocket science. It’s not hard. There are no good legal arguments against gay marriage or full equality for LGBT people. Every argument comes down to personal discomfort or religion, and those aren’t good enough reasons to deny people civil rights. And civil rights aren’t up for a popular vote. Ever. You either consider LGBT people full citizens with equal rights across the board or you don’t.

Hard to determine his party from the article. The candidate he pushed via his message, Alberta Darling, was GOP.

34 Justanotherhuman  Jun 14, 2014 5:16:40am

After reading this article, it’s pretty obvious that what Iraq is facing, and has done on its own with al Maliki in power, is sectarianism—Shiite v Sunni v Kurdish interests. It also appears that the WH has faced a terrible choice, which IMHO it has made the correct decision, for the short term, although it’s apparent that al Maliki is favoring better relations with Shiite Iran at the expense of others. These political factions, based on religious interests for the most part, will never be resolved by western interests.

Pres Obama said that a political solution in Iraq must be considered by them first and foremost. But how that will be done (as it has not been done in the past few years under al Maliki’s leadership) remains to be seen. Elections alone are not enough when minority interests are ignored. If Iraq winds up partitioned according to religious/tribal interests, then it will be so.

The Bushites didn’t understand what was at stake in Iraq—only US oil and political interests—and screwed up that country more than most realize, setting it up for abject failure and creating another lop-sided political climate to boot. “Democracy” cannot be forced on those who do not desire it or think it’s not in their interests. Iraq is an artificial “democracy” which simply won’t do for the current situation and trying to maintain with a US presence is folly.

U.S. won’t intervene in Iraq in absence of political reform by Iraqis, Obama says

Yesterday I posted about the elephant poaching statistics, which are showing about 5% of the wild population lost just last year.

This morning a news item popped up regarding one individual:

Satao the 50-year-old elephant found dead after poachers shoot him with poison arrows

One of Kenya’s largest elephants has died after being shot by poachers using poison arrows.

At 50-year-old, Satao had become one of the countries last surviving “great tuskers” - meaning his tusks were so long they reached the ground.

Determined poachers had been trying to track down the elephant, who had been living in the Tsavo East National Park, using mobile phones and GPS.

The combined forces of the Kenyan Wildlife Service and the Tsavo Trust had spent 18 months monitoring the gigantic animal’s movements using aerial reconnaissance and people on the ground.

But in March vets rushed to Satao’s aid after poachers managed to find him and shoot him with poison arrows.

Well he was clearly voting early and often, and that was the advice of Richard j. Daley, who was mayor of Chicago, President Obama’s home is in Chicago, therefore Robert Monroe is clearly a Chicago-style Democrat!!1

I hate saying this, but Kenya’s Wildlife Service should have tranq’d Satao and then cut off most of his tusks themselves. That would have hurt and possibly traumatized the elephant, but it might have kept him alive.

Sidebar: Yes, I hate the idea of “We can’t have/wear nice things because of the threat of robbery” too, but sometimes that is simply the situation and it needs to be accepted.

I don’t think he really wants to deal with politics this year. He knows what he’s known for, but since he will sometimes have bad news for the Democrats this time around he will not be as welcome as he was in 2012. Nate doesn’t pull back from statistics because he doesn’t like the numbers. The numbers are the numbers. I wanted him to tell me we’d win the House in 2012, but he didn’t, and we didn’t. It’s not his fault Boehner’s still speaker. He’ll post his analysis when the time is right. The election is still six months out.

Speaking of elections - how do you feel about Cantor getting his ass handed to him this week? Glad to see him go (he’s a RINO, after all). Think McCarthy will be as effective an asshole to Obama on Immigration ? He’s from California, you know…and an anti-immigrant stance here is suicide, even in a red district.

So, Nate’s “researcher” goes to the far stretches of the south to find a decent burrito?

Charlotte has so many Hispanic immigrants, entire neighborhoods contain some of the finest Mexican eateries if you want “authenticity”, in addition to Salvadoran, Guatemalean and other CA foodstuffs. And they’re on major roads, not tucked away. Restaurants, grocers, etc. abound, and even mainline supermarkets cater to Hispanic tastes, with food imported from Mexico and CA, with even fresh cactus and other “specialty” produce available.

A lot of that spills over into other counties as well, so you don’t find decent burritos just in the urban areas. I could find one here in a heartbeat, but usually make my own.

Except for the occasional medical facility, most of our construction is housing and small business, no food trucks. (Most of our Hispanic workforce is actually tied to chicken production.) We have had so little growth since the Bush crash that most of our retail space in an upscale 2009 stripmall has never been occupied.

Now, once the insurgency’s been suppressed, keeping the peace will entail one of two things: forming a coalition and making everyone happy or establishing a dictatorship and forcing everyone to comply.

I should have been an ambassador.

Except for the occasional medical facility, most of our construction is housing and small business, no food trucks. (Most of our Hispanic workforce is actually tied to chicken production.) We have had so little growth since the Bush crash that most of our retail space in an upscale 2009 stripmall has never been occupied.

I hear you. It’s booming in the urban areas here, though (lots of money in the Wall St of the South, Charlotte).

There’s a strip mall, pretty fancy with copper roofs and such, intended for “professional” types, I think, not retail, about a half mi from here that has been empty since it was built about 7+ yrs ago. A race car driver bought it a few years ago, but he has it for sale again. It’s a white elephant from hell.

I don’t know if they’ll go for a full on dictatorship but one of the major underlying issues is Maliki doesn’t want to share power with Sunnis. It’s an Iranian dream since the 80’s (and probably well before) to roll their military across the border and kill infidel Sunnis. Iraq may not end up as another dictatorship but the whole point of the exercise is to avoid an inclusive government. I think Iran’s offer of help is a lot more appealing to the Iraqis than Obama’s offer.

Iranian MP Blames US for Mounting ISIL Terrorism in Iraq

A Senior Iranian lawmaker slammed the US government for sponsoring the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terrorist group in Iraq.

“The anti-Islam and anti-religion group is operating on the part of the US and Israel to sow discord among Muslims… ISIL and other terrorist groups in Iraq are after implementing Washington’s anti Islam policies and spread Islamophobia,” Rapporteur of the Iranian parliament’s National Security and Foreign policy Commission Seyed Hossein Naqavi Hosseini told the Tasnim News Agency on Saturday.

re: #73 darthstar

I forgot to add the symptoms of a delusional disorder:

The following can indicate a delusion;

-The patient expresses an idea or belief with unusual persistence or force.
-That idea appears to have an undue influence on the patient’s life, and their way of life is often altered to an inexplicable extent.
-Despite his/her profound conviction, there is often a quality of secretiveness or suspicion when the patient is questioned about it.
- The individual tends to be humorless and oversensitive, especially about the belief.
-There is a quality of centrality: no matter how unlikely it is that these strange things are happening to him, the patient accepts them relatively unquestioningly.
-An attempt to contradict the belief is likely to arouse an inappropriately strong emotional reaction, often with irritability and hostility.
-The belief is, at the least, unlikely, and out of keeping with the patient’s social, cultural and religious background.
-The patient is emotionally over-invested in the idea and it overwhelms other elements of their psyche.
-The delusion, if acted out, often leads to behaviors which are abnormal and/or out of character, although perhaps understandable in the light of the delusional beliefs.
- Individuals who know the patient observe that the belief and behavior are uncharacteristic and alien.

I’m looking at you, wingnuts.

Beleaguered Iraqis Court Iranian Mastermind of the Shiites Who Fought the U.S.

Gen. Qassim Suleimani, the shadowy commander of Iran’s paramilitary Quds Force, flew to Iraq this week with dozens of his officers to advise the country’s beleaguered leadership about how to blunt the advance of militant forces on Baghdad, American officials said Friday.

In meeting with General Suleimani, the Iraqis are hosting the mastermind of Iran’s strategy in Iraq when Iraqi Shiite militias trained by Iran fought American troops. The general is also the current architect of Iranian military support in Syria for President Bashar al-Assad.

The contact suggests that the Iraqis see the possibility of significant aid from Iran as a means of pressuring the United States to come to Iraq’s defense with aid of its own.

Mr. Lister said it was unlikely that both Iran and the United States could play an active role in countering militancy in Iraq at the same time, but the strange-bedfellows element of the situation had led even Iran and Israel — bitter historical enemies — to find common cause.

“Everybody has an interest in checking ISIS,” said Amos Yadlin, a retired general and former head of Israeli military intelligence who is now executive director of Israel’s Institute of National Security Studies.

Mr. Yadlin warned that the United States should not let any shared interest it has with Iran in the current crisis cloud its judgment as Western nations negotiate to get Iran to abandon its nuclear program.

“If the price for getting cooperation on ISIS is giving Iran a free pass on the nuclear issue, then Israel is worried,” he said.

Gen. David H. Petraeus, who came to know the Quds Force commander’s influence when he served in Iraq, once described General Suleimani as “a truly evil figure” in a letter to Robert M. Gates, then the defense secretary. In another letter, he acknowledged the influence that General Suleimani had brought to bear in Iraq. “The most sobering surprise of the week was probably the extent of direct Iranian involvement in Iraqi political intrigue,” General Petraeus wrote in an April 2008 letter to Mr. Gates.

Even as the Quds Force under General Suleimani armed and trained Shiite militias in Iraq, he hosted some of Iraq’s most senior politicians. By stoking violence and then mediating the conflict, former American officials say, he could make himself indispensable and keep the Iraqis off balance.

In 2011, the United States Treasury Department put General Suleimani on its sanctions list because American officials said he had been involved in a plot to kill the Saudi ambassador to Washington.

This is where the “if you support policy ‘X’ with Iran” you must hate Israel logical fallacy comes into play.

I don’t think it has anything to do with Israel, but with sectarianism within Iraq. See #34.

If anything, support from Shi’ite Iran could be seen as attempts to suppress minority sects in Iraq politics which has been on-going for centuries.

Is the political conflict within the overall religion itself?

Conflict in Iraq Follows Centuries of Shiite-Sunni Mistrust

nbcnews.com

“The Iraq conflict plays out on several levels between Sunnis and Shiites. First and foremost, it’s about how to share power in a 21st century state. The prime minister, a Shiite, has failed abysmally in creating a formula to share power with the Sunnis, the traditional political masters in Iraq,” said Robin Wright, a joint fellow at the U.S. Institute of Peace and the Woodrow Wilson Center, non-partisan institutions.

(snip)

“I don’t necessarily think there’s a one-to-one correlation between the historic doctrinal differences and what is happening in Iraq right now,” said Haider Ala Hamoudi, an associate professor of law at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, who teaches on Islamic law. The fighting now, he said, arose more over a fight for power than the variations in beliefs held by Sunnis and Shiites.

(snip)

“Both sides agreed that Allah is the one true God and that Muhammad was his messenger, but one group (which eventually became the Shiites) felt Muhammad’s successor should be someone in his bloodline, while the other (which became the Sunnis) felt a pious individual who would follow the Prophet’s customs was acceptable.

“The original schism between Islam’s two largest sect was not over religious doctrine. It was over political leadership,” Wright said.” More

It is allowed on all hands, that the primitive way of breaking eggs, before we eat them, was upon the larger end; but his present majesty’s grandfather, while he was a boy, going to eat an egg, and breaking it according to the ancient practice, happened to cut one of his fingers. Whereupon the emperor his father published an edict, commanding all his subjects, upon great penalties, to break the smaller end of their eggs. The people so highly resented this law, that our histories tell us, there have been six rebellions raised on that account; wherein one emperor lost his life, and another his crown. These civil commotions were constantly fomented by the monarchs of Blefuscu; and when they were quelled, the exiles always fled for refuge to that empire. It is computed that eleven thousand persons have at several times suffered death, rather than submit to break their eggs at the smaller end. Many hundred large volumes have been published upon this controversy: but the books of the Big-endians have been long forbidden, and the whole party rendered incapable by law of holding employments. During the course of these troubles, the emperors of Blefusca did frequently expostulate by their ambassadors, accusing us of making a schism in religion, by offending against a fundamental doctrine of our great prophet Lustrog, in the fifty-fourth chapter of the Blundecral (which is their Alcoran). This, however, is thought to be a mere strain upon the text; for the words are these: ‘that all true believers break their eggs at the convenient end.’ And which is the convenient end, seems, in my humble opinion to be left to every man’s conscience, or at least in the power of the chief magistrate to determine. Now, the Big-endian exiles have found so much credit in the emperor of Blefuscu’s court, and so much private assistance and encouragement from their party here at home, that a bloody war has been carried on between the two empires for six-and-thirty moons, with various success; during which time we have lost forty capital ships, and a much a greater number of smaller vessels, together with thirty thousand of our best seamen and soldiers; and the damage received by the enemy is reckoned to be somewhat greater than ours. However, they have now equipped a numerous fleet, and are just preparing to make a descent upon us; and his imperial majesty, placing great confidence in your valour and strength, has commanded me to lay this account of his affairs before you.

I see greed as a force of nature, like wind or flowing water. When channeled properly, it can power a turbine, irrigate a field or create great wealth.

If left unchecked, it can wipe out cities and wreck economies.

The US government under Obama even indirectly cooperating with Iran? Howls and screams from the Right. Because no respectable president would ever even begin to negotiate with Iran, would he?

re: #129 Dark_Falcon

Very good use of Gulliver’s Travels.

The question at the heart of the matter - did Muhammad (saas) indeed designate Ali (r.a.) as his heir - is a good academic debate. I’ve read literature on both sides; unfortunately, it’s partisan literature meant to reinforce the respective arguments of both sides.

But it’s an academic debate. To commit mass slaughter in an attempt to answer a question wherein the principals have all been deceased for well over a millennium is the zenith of foolishness.

People can debate the matter - that’s fine. But as is often said in Islam, “Allah alone knows the truth of all things” so therefore, it’s not for us to try to decisively answer the question. In any event, a definitive and objective, non-partisan answer is an impossibility. So the most logical and obvious solution to this over 1,000-year old conundrum is simply to say, “Well….I wasn’t there, so I don’t know. Say - who do ya think’s gonna win the World Cup?”

My nephew, who works(ed?) for a military contractor and did 4 stints in Iraq posted the morning basically what I’ve been thinking:

- We never should have been there.

- The minority that is in power hates us.

- the only people currently able to maintain power are ruthless and corrupt because that’s the only way they have to keep it. I’ve locked eyes first hand with more than a few former Iraqi imperial guard soldiers. Pure evil. These same soldiers were trained by ‘us’, later defected, and are probably in power in Mosul at the moment.

- The overwhelming majority of Iraqis are simple well to do folks just like we are (Dad!!!). I reiterate - the Overwhelming majority!

- They have no infrastructure for a western style democracy. Regardless of our help. We take one step forward, the corrupt take them 2 steps back.

- in my opinion, no president past present or future has the means to affect positive change in that country - at this stage in that country’s political and ethical evolution. It is sad

- war is retarded… Military action is useless. We did nothing but kick a hornet’s nest both in Iraq and in Afghanistan. As a result of this, these regions have become westophobic and have reached a level of intolerance where aid workers and peace keepers are now targets.

Oh, I don’t bake cakes from scratch. The commercial stuff is usually pretty good, and I can’t eat much sugar, so off they go (saving a bit for the munchkin). Now, the muffins, breads, are entirely different. They’re from scratch. I always use paper cups—less mess and saves the pan, too, for muffins and cupcakes. You can substitute things like cereals (crushed) for some of your flour, add wheat germ, grapenuts, oatmeal, etc which makes them healthier, along with the fruits or veggies you use, and substitute honey, molasses, and other sweeteners for sugars (brown or white).

Lots of recipes online for simple breads without using yeast that are made with baking soda or baking powder, and all those recipes can be used interchangeably for muffins and loaves. You can’t fail with these unless your soda or baking powder is ancient.

Zucchini season is coming up, and zucchini bread or muffins is a good way to use that up. : )

Doesn’t really fit: Joe McCarthy wasn’t imagining an enemy, as the Soviet Union really was the enemy; What he was lying about was who was in bed with said enemy and level the enemy’s influence within the United States government. Nor was he impotent in his rage, as he had a decent amount of power.

She looks out the bedroom door, goes out, stands in the yard for a while, then comes back in through the back door, stands in the living room for a while, then slowly walks back the long hallway to the bedroom, where she looks out the window….

So far, she’s done it 3 times, and is on her fourth trip. It seems to make her happy, and she had a nice big breakfast. She really seems to like the new food - It’s got Bison in it!

Funny how sometimes the very people complaining about the paranoid style turn out to be paranoid ;)

From the Harper’s article:

On the other hand, the sexual freedom often attributed to the enemy, his lack of moral inhibition, his possession of especially effective techniques for fulfilling his desires, give exponents of the paranoid style an opportunity to project and express unacknowledgeable aspects of their own psychological concerns. Catholics and Mormons—later, Negroes and Jews—have lent themselves to a preoccupation with illicit sex. Very often the fantasies of true believers reveal strong sadomasochistic outlets, vividly expressed, for example, in the delight of anti-Masons with the cruelty of Masonic punishments.

Wow, did they ever hit that nail on the head. All you have to do is replace a couple of words and—bingo!—it perfectly describes the creepy eagerness some exhibit in reporting on beheadings & other terrorist cruelties:

Very often the fantasies of true believers reveal strong sadomasochistic outlets, vividly expressed, for example, in the delight of Islamophobes with the cruelty of radical Islamist/Jihadi punishments.

Considering that Cantor’s loss has largely been pinned on his immigration stance and that Jeb is considerably more moderate on that issue, you are probably 50% off the hook as of this week.

Gunmen attacks convoy, kill nine Iraq police

Gunmen attacked a convoy carrying the head of Iraq’s anti-corruption watchdog north of Baghdad today, sparking clashes that killed nine policemen, an officer and a doctor said. The attack on the convoy carrying Alaa Jawad, who was unharmed in the attack, also wounded 21 people and took place on the road between Baghdad and the city of Samarra.

I want a big, competitive Democratic primary. I want there to be months of competing t-shirts and bumper stickers and web sites touting the way this candidate will continue Obama’s legacy or that candidate will continue Obama’s legacy or a third candidate will augment Obama’s legacy with even more social programs and reforms. I want 2016 to be a celebration of Obamacare and a positive fight for more good things.

I also want the GOP to have a big, bloody primary where they talk about how much they hate dirty brown people, vaginas, and the environment, but love fetuses, guns in schools, and tax cuts.

Most women are raped by someone they know. Predators groom (brainwash) their victims and are very good at isolated victims who have been groomed by others.

All the guns and martial arts training in the world can’t undo that grooming. Only therapy can do that.

I think the most valuable lesson I learned with martial arts training - and this was true of all of the other women I trained with - is that we had the right to defend ourselves. We have the right to say no and back it up with kicking some ass if necessary. This is the hardest lesson women have to master after a lifetime of conditioning to be passive and “nice.”

Yeah, it’s hard for women to hurt another.

I’ve learned tho, that in the hands of the predator, all that training goes out the window. It takes therapy to overcome it. Martial arts and time at the target range can help, tho.

Then the younger boy tells me he’d be off in the early AM to attend his friend’s girlfriend’s graduation, so he’d be gone all day.

In 1651 the Italian astronomer Giovanni Battista Riccioli published within his
Almagestum Novum, a massive 1500 page treatise on astronomy, a discussion of 126
arguments for and against the Copernican hypothesis (49 for, 77 against). A
synopsis of each argument is presented here, with discussion and analysis. Seen
through Riccioli’s 126 arguments, the debate over the Copernican hypothesis
appears dynamic and indeed similar to more modern scientific debates. Both sides
present good arguments as point and counter-point. Religious arguments play a
minor role in the debate; careful, reproducible experiments a major role. To
Riccioli, the anti-Copernican arguments carry the greater weight, on the basis of
a few key arguments against which the Copernicans have no good response. These
include arguments based on telescopic observations of stars, and on the apparent
absence of what today would be called “Coriolis Effect” phenomena; both have been
overlooked by the historical record (which paints a picture of the 126 arguments
that little resembles them). Given the available scientific knowledge in 1651, a
geo-heliocentric hypothesis clearly had real strength, but Riccioli presents it
as merely the “least absurd” available model — perhaps comparable to the Standard
Model in particle physics today — and not as a fully coherent theory. Riccioli’s
work sheds light on a fascinating piece of the history of astronomy, and
highlights the competence of scientists of his time.

385 Islamo-Masonic Conspirator  Jun 14, 2014 12:53:01pm

I dunno if it’s been discussed here: the so-called “counter-Jihadis” now claim that Breivik’s support of them was but a ruse. They base this on a letter apparently written by him in prison, where he says he was using “double psychology” to discredit the “Jewish” wing of the CJ movement in favor of the “nordic” national socialist wing. It’s hard to evaluate, because in the letter he expresses his support for the nordic wing, and by using that same “double psychology” principle we could say that he wouldn’t write this (since it discredits the “nordics”), so maybe he wants to whitewash the Fjordman-Geller-Spencer wing. Indeed, his elaborate manifesto is hard to refute by a mere 13-page letter…

Typical Feline Overlord afternoon.

The female is moping on the window sill because she is bored/understimulated. She will periodically come over where I am and start knocking stuff off the table in order to get me to stir and pay attention to her - no pets, simply notice her.

The male found a milk jug ring. He is pawing at it. Then picking it up, carrying it over to a vinyl bag and dropping it into it so that he can then “hunt” it as it hides in the bag.

milk jug rings…who needs expensive store-bought cat toys?

(I would copy the link here but I can’t figure out how to do it on my Surface - don’t have a mouse attached.)

The mystery in the apartment currently is the little fabric mice that rattle that I pick up for $0.99 at Petco or the vet’s. The female cat really likes playing with them. Then, after a few days, they simply disappear. There are at least six of them somewhere in the apartment - and I cannot find them. And not in the usual places that small objects congregate in under a few pieces of the furniture since I clear those out weekly using a yard stick.

Under the sofa/couch or the bed.
That’s where I figure about 100 milk jug rings are hidden…

Yay! I get my truck tomorrow. Last time I owned a pickup was over 30 years ago - it was a 1970 Toyota HiLux. Slower than the second coming, but great for an 18 year old. But it was a good year, 1970 - Three Dog Night, The Guess Who, BJ Thomas at the top of the charts - so I’m sticking with it. And I’m buying my first American made vehicle…

There’s the Supreme Court Police, but I think they only provide security for the SCOTUS building, and justices while they are in the building.

Capitol police will make security arrangements & provide security for the Speaker Of The House for attending things like the Super Bowl.

Dunno about big box stores.

Supreme Court Police are different from Capitol Police.

It’s been reported that the next iPhone can take pictures underwater. But you can only do it once.

That’s ok, you can dry it in the microwave, also once.
