An insanely intricate piece by Antoine Dufour takes the two-handed tapping style to its outer limits. Amazing.

Finally! You guys have been patient! A song called «The Drive Within», from my Convergences album. Probably one of my hardest ones to play. Played on the new Beauregard signature guitar. Thanks for watching!

X-men. I’ve heard good things about it, even if it’s nowhere near as good as the comics were back in the early 80’s when I read that story for the first of many times.

Predictably, they’re comparing it now to the 18 minutes of missing tape from Watergate. Because apparently, in the 200+ years of American history, the only scandal of note where documents went “missing” was Watergate.

Rumsfeld, he had his own little extra-constitutional intelligence outfit staffed with his simpering cronies who he paid to blow smoke up his pinched grey ass until his colon resembled beef jerky and he sure didn’t have much use for us - after all, we were just the military he had.

But by the time we figured out we’d been ass-raped by Colin Powell, we were shoulder deep in Iraq, Baghdad was burning, Iraq’s army had thrown down their weapons and taken off their uniforms and had melted into the population, Saddam had vanished and his sons were dead, and the President of the United States had already declared victory from the deck of an American aircraft carrier.

The Iraqi Army has precedent for doing that, apparently.

Nothing has driven me up the wall more in the last 72 hours than listening to wingnuts simper and whine about how we weren’t prepared to clean up Maliki’s mess and how the President is “losing what we won!” Seriously, fuck you, wingnuts. What’s with this “we” business all of a sudden? Millions of your fellow Americans said the war was a mistake and you questioned their patriotism. Now you want them to feel as though they have a stake in your little “white man’s burden” expedition? Fuck you and the horse you rode in on.

What’s the goal? What’s the objective? Is it to end terrorism? Is it to enforce peace at the muzzle of a gun? Is it it to make defense contractors rich? Is it for jobs? Or is it for magic flying bunnies who shoot rainbows and cheap gasoline out of their little assholes to the sound of Yankee Doodle Dandy?

Or, or, is it just because you hate Barack Obama?

Sums it up nicely, IMO.

Really? Fuck off. Anyone with more than two functional brain cells to rub together could have told you — and DID tell you — that Iraq was a highly sectarian country. It was and is a majority Shiite country that was run by Saddam’s minority Sunni party and that the Baathists weren’t going to give up power easily. Overthrowing him without a fucking plan in place was going to lead to a power vacuum and to the kind of chaos we’re seeing now, but noooo. We had to go to war because Saddam and 9/11 and solving Dubya’s Daddy issues.

Fuck these chickenhawks sideways. They want another Iraq war? Let them fight it, and let them send their kids and use their money to pay for it.

And, we are not just noticing the predicted sectarian violence (oh that just rolls off the tongue) going down in Iraq.

We’ve been noticing it for years, the right wing though, swept it under the rug because they did not want to admit failure. Until a democratic president.

I tend to just tweak their tails by pointing out that they didn’t have much problem with these “outrages” when Bush was in the White House. That leads to whining about how he’s “not in office” anymore and thus nothing he did matters anymore.

The actual aficionados who know the DL appreciate the continued making it TO the World Cup. As long as no one is crippled, and the refs don’t blatantly jingle the money in their shorts….Well. The rest of the audience will be asking all the usual questions. Like; What’s offsides? What is an offside trap? Why is the ref ignoring the linesman? What is a play on advantage? And the most important one; That really must be a Magic Sponge!

Oh sure. I get that. The World Cup is massive and here in the States it barely registers on the radar. I’d love to see more interest in it and in sports like soccer. And it makes sense to push fans for Team USA. If more people follow the team then they’d be inclined to watch.

They’re idiots. Klinsmann is being honest and he’s speaking from experience. The US team isn’t ready to contend for the Cup. He’s setting realistic expectations for people so they don’t have a cow when the US fails to get out of their group.

There’s not going to be a Miracle on Ice and people need to accept that. It doesn’t mean that the US has a bad team. They just don’t have a strong enough team and they’ve also got the bad luck of being in the Group of Death. That’s just the way it is.

As an IT consultant I have to tell you the thought that the IRS can lose email is a little disturbing considering the rules for compliance for most financial institutions. If I ever told one of my clients that sorry we had a crash and lost 2 years of email I would lose that client so fast it would make your head spin. That shit should be on redundant hard drives, archived( since it is a government entity probably something easy like mimecast or global relay would be out so they would need an internal solution like mimosa) and also backed up nightly with traditional backups that can be taken off site and stored.

Any scandal here is that apparently the IRS’ IT infrastructure blows.

I remember this being something of a major bone of contention back when the ACA website went online, the screams about how there was no way that the government’s computers could be so pitifully set up that you couldn’t just build a website without it falling apart. But then a lot of those who worked in the government’s IT departments pointed out that most of their systems are A) years or decades old and B) rarely upgraded beyond what it takes to keep them from crashing all at once.

For something like a PC/laptop it varies. Once you move up to servers it depends on how the memory is configured, backed up, and how quickly someone noticed something is wrong.

Not to mention that the ACA thing had to interface with multiple other systems for information. That is a professional IT niche unto itself since you would be working with multiple platforms, methods of communication, and the protocols each system wants to exchange data in.

The IRS was able to generate 24,000 Lerner emails from the 2009 to 2011 because Lerner had copied in other IRS employees. The agency said it pieced together the emails from the computers of 82 other IRS employees.

But an untold number are gone. Camp’s office said the missing emails are mainly ones to and from people outside the IRS, “such as the White House, Treasury, Department of Justice, FEC, or Democrat offices.”

Then surely the emails will exist on other agency’s computers unless there was a rash of mysterious accidents.

The lost emails were reportedly on Lois Lerner’s personal laptop computer, not on a government server.

Yeah, it’s disconcerting that this could happen, but on the other hand it does, all the time. I’m not ready to start yelling cover-up just yet, though; the reports say they have all her intra-agency emails, this missing stuff is reportedly emails to other agencies or people. And they did turn over something like 72,000 emails.

The ACA thing is a bit of a different beast though. Literally the number one sin for IT is data loss. A lot of things can be forgiven in the IT world, downtime, inconvenience, but there is no reason to lose data. Certainly not 2 years worth. I have some clients who are ok with losing a days worth of data in case of a catastrophic failure or disaster(fire, flood etc.) but more than that is pretty unforgivable.

It’s become a fishing expedition at this point. They have no evidence that Lerner was receiving orders from anyone higher than her office, but they want to throw out the blanket accusation that those higher than her have “something to hide” unless they voluntarily turn over any emails from her they have. And even if they do, Republicans will declare that there’s more that’s not being released and thus reason to believe a cover-up.

Hard to say without knowing what systems they are using. If it was a situation where they have a Microsoft Exchange server and the user created an archive in the outlook client it actually pulls that mail of the server and stores it in an archive on the users machine. However, there should still be a server wide archive and backups specifically so a user can’t do that sort of thing and screw themselves.

About 4 million Feds and military, and perhaps as many contractor personnel produce maybe 100 million emails per day, including lolcats. Archiving all of it was required, but got damn little emphasis 10 years ago. You would expect department heads to get special attention, but since the requirements are so all-inclusive, she might not. Amid kidnapping, Abbas must take steps to prevent his political downfall

If it turns out the students were abducted for ransom in the form of concessions from Israel, it will be applauded by the Palestinian public, and Abbas will find it hard to express displeasure. Hamas and Islamic Jihad have made clear they expect a reward in exchange for the abductees’ release.

If all this weren’t enough, Palestinian complaints about the PA’s security coordination with Israel — coordination the Muqata recently declared “sacred,” will only increase. This will be used by Hamas, Islamic Jihad and the Palestinian public to goad Abbas.

If the three teens are released with PA assistance and no quid pro quo, it will be seen in the West Bank as a cozying up to Israel, even a betrayal of the Palestinian prisoners and detainees. The fact that Abbas has not yet conveyed a clear message, instead sending aides and associates to address the media, points to the trap he’s in.

Iraqi official confirms rumour that #ISIS militants flew captured Blackhawk chopper over #Mosul.

That’s a fake story. Here’s the truth, with the relevant paragraph bolded:

Department of Defense: Iraqi insurgents faking claims

The Islamic insurgents sweeping across Iraq have faked some of their claims of capturing American-made weapons from Iraq’s military, the Pentagon said today — though it also acknowledged the fighters have captured some vehicles and other equipment.

Defense officials told reporters that some of the claims made on social media by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria used years-old photos, including of weapons the U.S. never even sold to Iraq.

“There has been quite a lot of ISIS propaganda,” said Defense Department spokesman Col. Steve Warren. “Many of the photos are complete fabrications.”

For example, ISIS posted one photo that showed what it said was a captured MH-60 Black Hawk helicopter, the familiar workhorse of the U.S. Army and Navy. But as a defense official explained to reporters, not only did the U.S. not sell such aircraft to Baghdad, the picture itself had been taken years before and evidently just cut and pasted onto the Twitter around.

Except that it is an exceptionally busy and crowded place, and any rally there will be a major headache. The blowback against the bikers might be worth it to see, though.

There are some large parking lots near the border, but most of them are private and I doubt the owners want the bikers to rally there and cost them money.

If one or both of those assholes really is a veteran then they ought to have any non-medical veterans benefits they receive suspended for having snuck into a military hospital on behalf of an insane fuck like Alex Jones. And if Infowars knew and gave any aid to their plans to break the law, I’d advise the Bergdahl family to sue both the “reporters”, Infowars, and Jones himself under the civil lawsuit sections of the RICO Act.

Using a military ID to get on the base and not a press pass doesn’t get you an interview with anyone. It gets them an interview with you.

California declares whooping cough epidemic

California is being hit hard with a whooping cough epidemic, according to the state’s public health department, with 800 cases reported in the past two weeks alone.

The agency says that there were 3,458 whooping cough cases reported between January 1 and June 10, well ahead of the number of cases reported for all of 2013.

This is a problem of “epidemic proportions,” the department said. And the number of actual cases may be even higher, because past studies have shown that for every case of whooping cough that is reported, there are 10 more that are not officially counted.

Whooping cough, known to doctors as pertussis, is a highly contagious respiratory infection that is caused by a bacterium known as Bordetella pertussis.

The popular name for the disease comes from the whooping sound an infected person makes when gasping for breath after a coughing fit.

The bacteria spreads through coughing and sneezing. One person can infect up to 15 people nearby, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Typically symptoms appear an average of seven to 10 days after exposure.

Thanks, anti-vaxxers, you bunch of baby-killing choads!

That’s such bullshit. One report I heard on MSNBC this morning talked about kids reporting that gangs in El Salvador and Guatemala were coming into the schools there threatening kids w/harm if they didn’t join. The political situation isn’t really good, esp in El Salvador, and parents are desperate and frightened for their kids. Some in their teens are finding work here and sending money back home to have siblings sent, and some have already been sent back to their country of origin by the INS.

If they stay on the US side of the border there will be no problem with the demonstration itself. But I hope the Border Patrol and the Mexican government make sure the word gets out to any would-be illegal immigrants to stay the Hell away from where ever these guys are going to be. Because I don’t want to see someone who’s just looking for work get beat up or killed by a group of wingnut rage-boys.

“Would-be illegal immigrants” in Mexico are often known as “citizens”. Sometimes they are visitors in Mexico from farther south.

If they really were trying to cross the border illegally, I don’t think “wingnut rage-boys” would have much opportunity or ability to harm them. You think the bikers would form a rip-crew?

IMHO most recreational SCUBA shouldn’t go below 80 ft.

Yea, one can go deeper, but how physically fit are you? Decompression can become an issue, even using dive computers. Everyone, especially as one gets older, doesn’t react the same way to multiple dives to 80+ feet.

There isn’t much more you can (safely) see below 80 feet. Well there is, but when was the last time you drove your automobile 30 MPH past the speed limit.

Are you using rental equipment? Has your own equipment really been checked out for deep diving.

If you’re on a tourist dive boat, and you and your buddy are the only ones you know, make friends with another party, so they will notice if the boat starts to leave without you and your buddy back on board.

Really want to see natural reef beauty? Do a night dive.

If you’re going to do recreational SCUBA, especially in the Caribbean, or Central America, join DAN.

In North Florida there are also some very neat springs set up as dive centers. This one pours an unbelievable river of fresh water from cave about 70 ft. down. It has a population of small blind fresh water flounder. The rising current in places feels like a hurricane and sounds like a freight train.

That dive site doesn’t let you intro the cave without specific certification and equipment. (It’s very difficult for them to hold against the current.) Open water divers go to the mouth of it, which is oriented upwards. The water flow is so great that a tethered rope is needed to provide a handhold. The rush drops rapidly as the spring opens upwards.

Forgive me, I wasn’t trying to peddle that discredited idea. I was trying to say that not all the people who voted for Brat in the primary will support him in the general election. It seems I failed to insert nuance where it was required.

Graham’s already been to Iraq and in his reservist persona, too, not as a senator.

Lindsey Graham and John McCain are many things, but they are not chickenhawks. They’ve paid their dues and have earned the right to say what they want on Iraq.

Nobody called them chickenhawks, so this is kind of a non-sequiter. What McCain and Graham are, military experience notwithstanding, are two bigoted idiotic bloodthirsty old fuckwits eager to get more Americans killed just so we don’t “lose” a war we had no business ever getting involved in.

It might be one thing if Maliki’s government was at all worth fighting for, but it’s just another endemically corrupt kakistocracy that is adamantly opposed to reform.

Mashed potatoes need only milk, butter, salt, and pepper. Gravy if you have it - but REAL gravy, not some shit from a can or envelope.

Yeah. We have another that is only opened once a year as a fundraiser for the Sheriffs rescue team. That’s a known killer, only for certified guys. I just went for the monster BBQ. Entire hog in a thing half the size of an 18-wheeler.

Let my PADI & YMCA certs expire 14 years ago, after working a couple of years of dive “incident” investigations for underwriters, and besides I’d had 35 years of recreational SCUBA DUBA.

As you may well know, unless you do it a lot, and are in excellent physical shape, 60 ft should be your (safe) max for weekend warriors.

I was with ya up to the “scramble the egg”, everybody knows the ONLY proper egg to place on top the hash is a poached egg. You can use hash beside any kind of egg, but can only be topped with poached.

To do otherwise is to risk offending the old ones.

Poached eggs make me think of Mom - she used to do them in a pan, without those little inserts. Perfect every time - white completely cooked, but still soft and pillowy, yolk all runny.

Whenever I try to do that, I end up with a cooked yolk and a pan of dilute Egg Drop Soup.
