Video: George Will Stands by His Column on Sexual Assault

Will: Women report rapes just to win “coveted” victimhood status

I’m going out on a limb to predict that George Will’s attempt to man-splain his recent column on sexual abuse and rape, in which he claimed women report rapes so they can be afforded the “coveted status” of “privileged” victimhood, isn’t going to win anyone over to his weird, heartless argument.

Wait. You mean the well respected, non-partisan, moderate, and non-polarizing George Will?

2 Testy Toad T  Jun 20, 2014 12:40:51pm

I’m sure that’s the reason that more than half of all rapes go unreported. Because “victim of rape” is such a coveted status.

Fossilized piece of shit.

3 Rev_Arthur_Belling  Jun 20, 2014 12:41:12pm

Actually met George Will once at a cook-out. He’s just as much of an asshole as you’d think.

4 Eclectic Cyborg  Jun 20, 2014 12:43:38pm

Because being ostracized and slut shamed are such awesome “privileges”.

5 aagcobb  Jun 20, 2014 12:44:21pm

Hope we can get some GOP senatorial candidates commenting favorably on how women falsely report rape to obtain that coveted victimhood status. Though by now you’d think they would’ve learned that when the word “rape” comes up, the only appropriate response is to say that it is a horrendous crime which should be vigorously prosecuted and victims should get all the assistance they need for their recovery.

6 TedStriker  Jun 20, 2014 12:45:05pm

Of course Will is doubling down; being a modern “conservative” means never having to say that you’re wrong or that you’re sorry.

What a fucking bloviating assbag.

7 Justanotherhuman  Jun 20, 2014 12:45:14pm

Yeah, women want this “coveted” status, all right. Even though it took me almost 50 yrs to publicly admit what happened to me twice.

I never talked about it until a couple of years ago.

They can’t really talk sensibly about rape. After all, US so-cons are perilously close to approving of rape, as long at it only happens to uppity women and other undesirables (e.g., prison inmates).

18 wrenchwench  Jun 20, 2014 12:49:39pm

He’s worried about the men who are accused of rape, because he takes sexual assault more seriously than his critics do.

The real bad people are the ones who keep young men from getting into medical school by holding them accountable for their behavior.

26 Targetpractice  Jun 20, 2014 12:52:38pm

Say George, if you take rape so seriously, perhaps you might start treating men as equal partners in it and ask them why they got so drunk that they allowed their hormones to get the better of them. You know, just like you’d question their victims.

You’d think that the “Law ‘N Order” Conservatives would be more supportive of the victims, but I guess the problem is that it’s feminists who are bringing the topic up, AND the kind of rape they’re talking about isn’t the kind where the perp is a violent stranger, ideally a minority, and the victim is chaste and ideally white. Also it probably makes them uncomfortable to think that getting a girl drunk and taking advantage is a bad thing.

It was only a brief time ago where probably most of them thought that there could be no such thing as rape in a marriage.

Will shows all the signs of an elite, privileged boarding school type who remembers when “boys will be boys” and turning one into the police would “ruin a young man’s future.” Yeah, it’s that kind of attitude even if he wasn’t that privileged w/money, although since his father was a professor, he was able to get a leg up at the UI jr/sr high school which was considered “elite”. Will and I are the same age, from the same generation, and I saw it in actual practice. No doubt he did, too, and it shaped his perspective.

en.wikipedia.org

Never mind the damage it did to women who were forced to just bear it or suffer the consequences, because no one would believe that such “fine young men” would be the actual pigs they were.

47 Targetpractice  Jun 20, 2014 1:06:08pm

I believe I’ve mentioned it before, but this past March I had to sit on a jury for a rape trial. And that had to be the most uncomfortable three days of my life. It was the sort of trial that George Will would have quickly blown off, two teens in court with the girl claiming she’d been taken advantage of while passed out and the guy claiming she’d been a willing participant. Even if the prosecutor hadn’t screwed up with her medical witness, bringing in a nurse examiner who wasn’t qualified to testify as the conclusions of the medical exam, the case was still pretty flimsy. It was her word against his, no other witnesses to the event itself, and plenty of doubt as to veracity of her claim.

I never felt more emotionally drained when, after five hours of deliberation, I had to vote to acquit. Do I believe she was raped? I can really only say that, in her mind, what happened was rape. Can I prove it? Not beyond reasonable doubt. I can say that I think the defendant is a sleazeball, and I think he’s on borrowed time before he’s back in court on another criminal charge.

Conservatives tend to only be all law-and-order on rape if it’s black/brown man-on-white woman; anything else either triggers the circle-the-wagons response (when it’s well-off white dudes doing the raping) or simply doesn’t compute in their microscopic brains (all other cases).

Since the late 60s and early 70s, that shit changed and those excuses no longer cut it. I know…I graduated high school in ‘72 and after that college…graduated in early ‘77. It was already clear to me that old thinking was gone. Not that some of the guys my age (almost 60) didn’t try it, but they already knew they were being fuck-ups and skirting the law, etc.

That was another of the highlights of the case I sat on the jury for, the guy’s insistence that she was raring to go because she hadn’t stopped him. And his defense attorney made sure to emphasize that she had not at any time cried out or gave an indication that she was distressed until after he’d dropped her off at her sister’s apartment.

See, the first half of that argument does sort of play out in the media. Rapists are looked upon as dirty evil people (as they should be), and not everyone is good enough to adhere to the concept of “innocent until proven guilty”. That being said, if you’re even remotely concerned about the possibility of a girl crying rape, perhaps you should rethink your approach to dating rather than complain about it.

As a law firm, The NCHERM Group represents 35 colleges and universities as outside counsel, making it one of the largest higher education-specific law practices in the country. As a consulting group, The NCHERM Group’s twenty-four consultants have provided services to more than 3,000 clients, giving it unparalleled reach and impact on the field. The NCHERM Way has become the risk management touchstone for schools, colleges and universities across the country.

141 calochortus  Jun 20, 2014 2:42:08pm

OK, I think we can all agree that a rape where you suffer a broken arm and a couple broken ribs, and fear for your life is probably worse than some guy forcing himself on a virtually unconsious woman at the end of a date. That doesn’t make either one OK.
Furthermore, the fact that it isn’t rape doesn’t make being groped by someone OK either.

The fact that a few people who claim to be crime victims are lying doesn’t mean women who say they have been raped need to be subjected to special scrutiny.

Thank you for your kind attention. That is all.

I think that’s why people like to cling to the very clear-cut person-was-beaten-into-submitting definition of rape. Because it does avoid the murky grounds of intent and consent and what these things actually mean in practice.

However, papering over these issues doesn’t make them go away, as much as some conservatives would like them to. And, for that matter, some liberals as well.

Doorframe has developed some fur mats as a result of his recent injury, surgery and recuperation.

My cat loves it. The only problem is getting her to stay still because she gets into the brushing so much. There’s a low end model and a high-end model. I’ve never tried the high-end version.

Edit: And it pulls in a LOT of fur.

Edit 2: But she’s never had matted hair, so I can’t comment on how well it would work with that.

Two of my overlords are of the very fluffy variety, but for the most part this has thankfully been …less of a problem.

I have a comb with rolling teeth (really not sure what else to call it) that I will sometimes use to very slowly work things out. There is generally a lot of bribing involved.

Google tells me that you are supposed to use a mat splitter to cut the mats into smaller pieces to be removed with the comb.

I’ve carefully combed a few out using a flea comb on a short hair. I try to hold the fur beneath the mat in order to reduce the pulling on the cat’s skin as much as possible. Cat was still not happy due to it being belly fur, but he put up with it for the most part. (This was with the older cats, and the one Siamese started to get mats and lots of loose tufts that needed combed out once his arthritis got bad enough he couldn’t groom his belly and back legs properly.)

One of my cats lurrrrrrrrrrrvs this brush. Also, any other brush. The other kitteh seemed too sensitive for vigorous brushing, but once he got into it, his fave turned out to be this one, or one like it. Both are shorthairs.

The season finale of Fargo was as good as I’d hoped it would be. Just a great, great show - I actually think I enjoyed this more than True Detective. Off the wall characters that develop in completely unexpected ways. Billy Bob Thornton has the role of a lifetime.

Long form storytelling really works with Coen Brothers-type material. No Country For Old Men would have worked really well as a series like this — the film seemed too condensed in parts to really tell the full story.

Ugh.

Some days I think we’re making progress and then the amount of victim blaming/slut shaming/let’s put sexual assault in scare quotes because it’s just women overreacting to men being men…

I had a massive, week long fight with my brother that played out over facebook, private phone calls and email…all over a fb post I put up about supporting ‘slutwalks’ that focus shame on rapists instead of the victims. My brother was utterly apoplectic that I would post such a thing and ended up publically disowning me as a family member after I took down several stalker-ish posts he left on my fb front page where he cursed at and attacked a female college friend of mine who defended my position.

He just recently started talking to me again, but things will never, ever be the same between us.

I talked to three different counselors about the incident and showed them the emails. Two of them were convinced he had sexually assaulted someone in the past based on his reaction to the original post.

I get frustrated at the characters obviously choosing the wrong thing, or not saying the right thing, but given the tendency in my own family to avoidant behavior (for example), I can’t really say it’s unrealistic.

Ugh.

Honestly, things like this are why I have a policy of absolutely nothing politically related on Facebook, and the majority of family is relegated to a list that I can ignore at will.

I have scarcely ventured onto fb ever since then. This was last October. Unbelievably, my parent blame me for what happened. Then again, I live 3,000 miles away, and he lives an hour from them and framed things as he saw fit in conversations to them.

I did not forward the emails to family members because I thought it unethical…and because they were so sickening I couldn’t bring myself to show any relatives who would never be able to forget what he says in them.

There’s no doubt in my mind that George Will can imagine himself in the position of a rapist (or at the very least, accused of rape) much more easily than he can imagine himself as a woman doing anything.

When someone wants to parse the boundaries of what is and isn’t rape with great attention to legalistic technicalities combined with complete disregard for the underlying concept of consent, I suspect there is motivation for taking that path.

Weeks like this one really make it all fun. They didn’t even mind that I blew off the last chapter all about MVC 2.0 and Silverlight 4. It kills me to know that he leans pretty heavily Republican. We don’t talk about it. We never will talk about it. But to know that the man I have respected for years and years and years cannot see the anti-women platform and won’t put my rights, my sisters’ rights above lower taxes and “smaller” government …hurts. I absolutely do my best to deal with it and not let it be an issue, and for the most part it’s not - but I can’t pretend it doesn’t exist either.

When I was a kid there was a boy a couple of years younger than me whose grandma lived a few doors down from us. He was really creepy at a very young age—I’m talking catching snakes, chopping them up, then putting all the gore in a bucket and showing it to you creepy… asking to see girls & women naked and/or asking to touch them inappropriately creepy… IOW, gonna grow up to be a serial killer creepy. And he always did this stuff with a smile, like it was perfectly normal and he was enjoying it immensely. He made my skin crawl.

He drowned when he was 12. As horribly callous as it sounds, all I can remember feeling is relief upon hearing about his demise.

I used to have an e-mail filter for my grandmother so that I didn’t get all the Fox News forwards 20 times a day. The other set (the ones who are still around) are less bad, but mostly in that they are less vocal about it. Oh well. I corrupted my sisters, I will take what I can get.

Oddly enough, my parents are at least as liberal as I am, and have been more consistent about it.

Apparently, they were GOP activists for the Goldwater(!) campaign, but got disillusioned with him when he came out on the wrong side of the civil rights issues of the time. Years later, Reagan didn’t fool them at all.

I would use a scissors to cut along the mat, not across it (producing several smaller mats) then pull apart with my fingers and comb the “daughter” mats.

Am I evil?

That’s what I tried on other furry companions in the past.
It never ended well.

I pointed out to my mother that now she is going to have a 29 year old child and cannot pretend to be 29 anymore and got grumped at on the phone.

Granted my mother is in better shape than I am so I am allowed to be an occasional obnoxious child.

On the subject of family politics, my mom’s parents were big time Republican supporters, especially after they moved to Sun City in AZ in retirement.

I still have a CREEP medal from them somewhere (yes, the 1972 election really did have Committee to RE-Elect the President as an official supporter of the GOP/Nixon).

A noteworthy deviation from this orthodoxy was Grandpa’s disapproval of Pat Buchanan (probably after the infamous culture war speech). Apparently Grandpa said Buchanan was doing Nazi talk. Since Grandpa and Grandma emigrated from Germany because of the Nazis’ growing power, he should know it when he hears it.

Aw, hell. I can make MYSELF feel old, just remembering what all I remember.

I can remember a lot of things, but I still don’t feel old most of the time. But catch me after a a two hour set in a sweltering performance space in Brooklyn (like I did last night for Intel’s rollout of this new app), and yeah. Might feel a little old at that point.

My oldest just turned 29 on the 10th of this month. And my youngest, the surprise, turns 14 in August.

Same.

re: #267 klys

We can play the make other lizards feel old game.

I hadn’t graduated high school yet when 9/11 happened.

The first election I was eligible to vote in was 2004.

I have no memories of the Berlin Wall falling.

I remember it going up.

(But my wife bests me—she was stationed with her father in Vielsek then, her second tour in FRG.)

Me too! My whole family went to downtown Toronto for the Stanley Cup parade in 1967. Mahovlich, Horton, Armstrong, Kelly , Keon, Bower, winning over Montreal. Good times! We’ve been waiting a very long time for another Cup, haven’t we?

Anything that keeps George Will from writing another boring sentence about baseball has to be a good thing.

My mother spent the better part of a decade asking what happened to the “nice young boy” who raped me. She would say things like, “He liked you so much.” The creepy part of it is that he did. Afterward he told me he wanted to marry me.

I think there is something that genuinely doesn’t add up in the minds of many, perhaps most, rapists. They really do believe that “no” means “yes” and so on.

No idea which unit, but it looks like a fuel-air bomb, not a missile. Those bombs go by parachute so they’ll descend slowly so as to allow the big clunky sky trucks that carry them to get clear of the area before they go off.

I’ll make you feel young. I remember the Berlin wall going UP. I remember hating it. I remember visiting Berlin and hating it more. Here you had a wall whose purpose was to make a whole part of the world into a maximum security prison. And it had the body count to prove that the guards meant business. And there I was walking on the other side, and the guards were watching me. And they had machine guns. The big kind, with a tripod etc.

Putting aside the more important personal events that rank first, second, etc. in happiest days of life, the day that wall was breached and Berlin threw a liberation party was number 1.

A year or two later, walking under the Brandenburg gate where once the central iconic sector of that wall stood, was right up there too.

Kennedy’s Ich bin…quote may have been a slip up of German grammar, but it was an inspirational moment in history and made its own big contribution to the string of events that led to that day. And I remember that too.
