I don’t like starting off a thread with something so depressing, but here it is anyway. It’s not your imagination that most summers are probably hotter than they used to be (if you have any age on you at all) and that things will probably get worse.

“Energy demand to cool buildings has risen while heating demands have dropped since 1970.”

Climate Change in the U.S. in 8 Compelling Charts

climatecentral.org

“The newly released National Climate Assessment spans 30 chapters with thousands of references on how climate change is impacting the U.S. The report took more than 300 scientists and 4 years to prepare, including addressing more than 4,000 comments from the public. The message of the report is that climate change is already happening across the country.

“Climate change is not a distant threat, it is already affecting every region of the country and key sectors of the economy. This national climate assessment is the loudest and clearest alarm bell to date,” White House science advisor John Holdren said in a phone call with reporters.

“That message is reinforced by a number of powerful images in the report. To understand the changes that are already occurring and what’s projected for the future, here are eight of the report’s most compelling graphics that each tell a chapter of the global warming story.”

Climate change is real, it’s human-made, and to deny it is just down right irresponsible. Let’s hope it’s just not Catch-22.

They can be lethal. They can also blind. I knew a Palestinian guy back in Texas whose eye was put out as a kid by an IDF rubber bullet. I’m sure the technology has improved since then, and it’s better than live ammo, but still.

I have no idea; we’ve built an awful lot of residential and commercial bldgs since 1970. In 1970, I was living in a house with no a/c and in fact, didn’t live in any place except 1 apt w/central until I bought my second house in 1993. Almost every new house built after the ’60s in NC had central A/C. My first house, built in 1956 with surrounding trees and decent insulation with a brick veneer and crawl space, didn’t have it, and a large window unit (18K BTU) cooled the entire 1,000 sq ft, but it wasn’t in a development, either. People have gotten used to central A/C and for the most part, aren’t giving it up. I know I couldn’t live in my present apt without it during the summer.

Might be a good time to remember those drones are NOT the ones LAPD got from Seattle, those are just cam drones. I think we’ll not be having weaponized drones over the US anytime ever. Not even the less lethal variety.

EDIT-It’s a bad idea. Really awful. We can do better for riot/crowd control.

Some rubber bullets are about .3 inches of steel coated with .3 inches of elastomer. Those ones are fired as cannister from the muzzle of a rifle.

It was a lead-filled bean bag, according to the article. I remember hearing about it at the time—people thought it was a tear gas canister or something.

I agree it’s a bad idea. Regardless of what it was, any solid object fired at humans at high velocity has the potential to kill or maim.

It’s not as if they’re shooting Nerf bullets. //

Oh? Not familiar with those. More familiar with the one fired from shotguns and the flare/grenade launcher. LAPD uses pepper spray paintballs in ordinary paintball guns too.

I got a little training with less lethal stuff back when. Got to shoot some very interesting stuff. Saw how bean bags tend to frisbee or slice off to the side. The way to use rubber bullets is bounced off the ground at the legs. Going for the headshot is attempted murder.

“On June 21st 2014 and just before 1:00 am, Kirkland Police Department Patrol Units responded to a 911 call of a disturbance in the 10600 block of 124th AVE NE. The male caller stated that a female at the residence was “hitting people” and they could not get her to stop or to leave the house. Officer arrived and immediately heard the sounds of the disturbance inside the residence.

“They entered and contacted several persons; one being Hope A Stevens (Solo) who appeared intoxicated and upset. Nonlethal weapons should really be called “nonlethal, if used exactly as specified, and there’s no extenuating circumstances.”

Given how often and how badly tasers and pepper spray are used, not thrilled at the idea of a drone with rubber bullets.

Wiki text:
Israeli rubber bullets are produced in two main types. The older type, the standard rubber bullet, is a steel sphere coated in a thin layer of rubber, weighing 14 grams, while the new improved rubber bullet, introduced in 1989, is a rubber coated metal cylinder 1.7 cm in diameter, weighing 15.4 grams.[15] These bullets are fired from a special adapter attached to the muzzle of a rifle, similar to those used to launch rifle grenades. The rubber bullets are loaded into the front of the adapter, and propelled with a blank cartridge.[citation needed] Of the lethal injuries from this projectile, most are suffered to the head.[15]

The spherical ones were the common round when I was there.

Mass graves of migrants found in Falfurrias (+ Video)

FALFURRIAS - Unidentified migrants who died entering the United States were buried in mass graves in a South Texas cemetery, with remains found in trash bags, shopping bags, body bags, or no containers at all, researchers discovered.

“In one burial, bones of three bodies were inside one body bag. In another instance, at least five people in body bags and smaller plastic bags were piled on top of each other, Baylor University anthropologist Lori Baker said. Skulls were found in biohazard bags — like the red plastic bags in receptacles at doctors’ offices — placed between coffins.

Kurds now selling their own oil
Israel accepts 1st delivery of disputed Kurdish pipeline oil

The United States, Israel’s closest ally, does not support independent oil sales by the Kurdish region and has warned possible buyers against accepting the cargoes.

Israeli leaders have been alarmed in recent months, however, by signs of a possible rapprochement between the United States and Iran.

Officials said Israel was keen to build good ties with the Kurds, hoping to expand its limited diplomatic network in the Middle East and broaden options for energy supplies.

McDunn is Service Corporation International Spokeswoman Jessica McDunn who currently own the funeral home. She’s a “spokesperson” not on the scene and probably has no idea what is happening in the funeral home.

Furthermore, “Baker [the Baylor U anthropologist] reports that before exhuming the bodies, she asked the funeral home for their records and was told that none existed. The Funeraria del Angel Howard-Williams website claims a multi-decade history of assisting Hispanic families by offering “dignity and respect” throughout the ordeal of losing a loved one.”

If you watch the video at JAH’s link, you’ll see that the ‘wrong … truly anti-civilized … barbaric’ burials were discovered because they’ve begun a process of trying to identify the bodies. This will be made difficult or impossible because of the way they are buried.

Why do you side with the profit-making institution over the dead and their families?

If you’re a motorcycle cop with the L.A.P.D., time to celebrate. As a pilot project, the force has bought a Zero MMX electric motorcycle, that offers those advantages with the addition of stealth.

“Most importantly, our officers have an added tactical advantage while on patrol,” says Officer Steve Carbajal of the L.A.P.D. Off-Road Unit. For now, Zero says that the LAPD “purchased one MMX as a pilot program,” for use on and off-road. If it goes well, they will order more.

The MMX is Zero’s special forces-specific bike. It can ford through water up to 3.2 feet deep, put out 68 pound-feet of toque, go from zero to 60 in 4.4 seconds, and hit a top speed of 85 mph. Equipped with the largest available battery pack, it bike will run for two hours.

That’s a lot of remains that were consigned to a funeral home to bury and were discovered in shopping and plastic bags, etc in mass graves.

Over 100 so far and still more to go. Someone made a huge profit burying them that way. In fact if it were just 100, that’s $45K and you can’t tell me it cost that much to dig those graves in which multiple remains were found.

The county also knew that a normal “burial” costs far more than $450. The cheapest coffin would cost at least that. But they didn’t care about those folks, so I’m sure they also turned a blind eye to what was going on.

“Did you take care of those remains?”

“Yes, they were buried yesterday.”

“Check’s in the mail.”

No questions asked.

Someone responded to the (original) tweeter’s post that those are actually Palestinian security forces.

I did some googling and it looks like she may very well be right (see results here and here). Haaretz has a pretty good article on them:

First women joining Palestinian commando unit in West Bank

Palestinian women in combat fatigues and headscarves rappelled down a six-story tower, fired assault rifles at imaginary terrorists and in a drill straight out of the movies bundled a would-be VIP into a car and sped off after a shooting.

The 22 future commandos are trailblazers in a still largely male-dominated society, set to become the first female members of the Presidential Guards, a Palestinian elite force of 2,600 men. Their inclusion is the result of gradual changes in the West Bank in recent years.

Some gender barriers have fallen, with a few women assuming posts as mayors, judges and Cabinet ministers or starting their own businesses. At the same time, unemployment is on the rise, and families are more open to women entering non-traditional jobs if it means another paycheck. […]

Some of the new female Guards say they believe they are serving their homeland, but in the short term there’s also the draw of travel and adventure.

Greenwald said he was going to resume playing tennis regularly. “I’m willing to get old for this thing,” he said, “but I’m not willing to get fat.”

Judging from the clip I saw of him on Maher’s show, the book tour is defeating him.

In the NFL they’d all be fined and suspended for making the other team feel bad.

Must have been a pre-tourney match

They didn’t make the cut

I’m pretty hawkish and even I’m not in favor. I think our window of opportunity has come and gone. Lacking a better strategy for Iran and Syria I think it’s best to stop digging and just sit in the hole for a while and have a think.

If you ever get the chance to see the film Snowtown, do.

Daniel Henshall’s performance as Australian serial killer John Bunting is right up there with Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter and Anthony Perkins as Norman Bates. Henshall has an uncanny resemblance to Bunting, and he plays it to perfection.

The horror of course is that Bunting is a real-life serial killer, currently incarcerated for his killing of 11 people.

4 western Iraqi towns fall to advancing ISIS militants

Together, the four towns are situated along a highway from Syria to Baghdad, heightening possibilities that the militants could now march from the west to lay siege to the Iraqi capital. One of the four towns, Huseiba, is just 100 kilometers, or 62 miles, outside Baghdad.

Iraqi government officials didn’t have an immediate comment, other than security officials saying they were expecting troop reinforcements in Anbar.

Okay, so the problem with being hard of hearing is that you hear things that make absolutely no sense whatsoever, and you have tons of “what the fuck?” moments before you realize your ears have once again played you for a fool.

Kansas City’s bus system has audio advertisements, and they frequently interrupt the trip for announcements.

What they said was: “For more information go to bit.ly.”

What I heard was: “For more information go to bit.ly.”

Surfing the net this afternoon with the TV on in the background as background noise, there was a commercial for a new (cough) miracle weight loss pill, Lipozene.

The ad instantly caught my attention: “Really? Lima beans?”

This is the background that the film is based on. By all accounts, it adheres to the events pretty much perfectly.

re: #11 Rightwingconspirator

Might be a good time to remember those drones are NOT the ones LAPD got from Seattle, those are just cam drones. I think we’ll not be having weaponized drones over the US anytime ever. Not even the less lethal variety.

EDIT-It’s a bad idea. Really awful. We can do better for riot/crowd control.

Sorry to return to this post from the early part of the thread, but I do want to make clear that the utility I see for less-lethal-armed drones in a riot situation is for finding and incapacitating any leaders of the riot.

An example might be some wingnut preacher inciting a crowd in Texas to attack something associated with “SATANIC GOVERNMENT SOCIALISM!!1” or some such thing. The drone’s camera allows law enforcement to identify him and then they use the drone to hit him in the gut with a plastic ball, knocking him down and taking the wind out of him. Without him inciting the crowd, it fights less hard and is easier to disperse.

I should point out it was the British in Aden who first used “take out the ringleader” tactics successfully to quell riots. But they did by having sharpshooters shoot the ringleaders with full-power rifle rounds, which is obviously not acceptable. Hence my proposal to use a drone to get less lethal weapons into range of a riot’s ringleaders.
