Tea Party Mounts Massive Effort to Support Crazy Neo-Confederate in Mississippi

“Do I look fringe to you?”
Wingnuts • Views: 31,180

Here’s a good lengthy article at the Washington Post on the Tea Party’s all-out push in Mississippi to get out the vote for racist, homophobic neo-Confederate candidate Chris McDaniel: In Mississippi, Jenny Beth Martin and Tea Party Patriots Try to Prove Their Worth.

I think this is my favorite part of the article:

“This is about character, honor and integrity that used to be a hallmark of the country,” says Robert Edward Kenney, a man in a wheelchair with a big white beard and a confederate-flag-inspired bandana. “The way we are being portrayed is like we’re domestic terrorists with baby’s veins and guts hanging out of our teeth. They say we are fringe — do I look fringe to you?

Unfortunately, he’s right. There’s nothing “fringe” at all about people who flaunt the Confederate flag in today’s Republican Party.

They have moved the the GOP platform so close to the fringe that it grows hard to distinguish between the two

As fucked as we think we are, at least we don’t have senators claiming that ebola is a doctor’s conspiracy when people are dying left and right from it.

That’s what kills me. They’re acting like Thad Cochran is some sort of flaming pinko commie librul. He’s just as conservative as the next GOP stooge. He’s just not crazy enough for the base, so McDaniel. WTF.

“Before Martin was the president of the Tea Party Patriots, she was a software manager who quit her job to get fertility treatments and give birth to twins. The temp agency of her husband, Lee Martin, went belly-up, leaving the couple with a debt of more than $500,000 to the IRS. They filed for bankruptcy around the time of the Wall Street bailout.

“I was very frustrated by the TARP bill, because nobody bailed us out, and we weren’t looking for a bailout,” Martin says in a coffee shop outside of Jackson. It’s a message she uses often, saying that no one bailed out her husband’s company when it failed. As for being bailed out themselves, Martin has had to publicly contend with the fact that she and her husband filed for bankruptcy, a bailout of its own sort. Less well known is the fact that her husband accepted unemployment for a time, something else she has explained.”

Bailouts for me, but not for thee.

Good news is the Tea Party Patriots org alone is on record as spending 800K on the primaries. Assume that required a proportional response from Cochran’s establishment side. That’s a ton of money blown in a TPGOP ‘safe’ state.

Please proceed.

“Jenny Beth Martin” - from bankrupt house cleaner to well-paid fringe bomb thrower.

Who Are the Tea Party Patriots?

truth-out.org

“The year before her incorporation of Tea Party Patriots in Georgia in 2009, Jenny Beth Martin and her husband, Lee, declared bankruptcy. They claimed debts of more than $1.4 million resulting from a failed “temp” agency that supplied thousands of Spanish-speaking immigrant workers to local food production businesses, including Coca-Cola.

“Lee was not allowed to discharge the payroll taxes he had withheld from his employees and diverted from the taxing authorities, and the Martins continued to owe $510,000 to the federal government and $172,000 to the state of Georgia. They lost their five-bedroom home in Woodstock, matching Lincoln Navigators, and club membership, and Jenny Beth had to go to work as a house cleaner.

(snip)

“Although Jenny Beth Martin is listed as the Chief Financial Officer of TPP, its day-to-day finances are overseen by Lee Martin, who serves as the financial gatekeeper and de facto human resources manager. He is assisted by Jenny Beth’s cousin, who formerly worked as Lee’s operations coordinator at the failed temp agency and is now Jenny’s “right-hand man.” Lee says, “if people want to get paid, the bill goes through me for administrative purposes.” More

32 dog philosopher  Jun 23, 2014 12:51:53pm

The victim’s allegation that Clinton smeared her following her rape is based on a May 1975 court affidavit written by Clinton on behalf of Thomas Alfred Taylor, one of the two alleged attackers, whom Clinton agreed to defend after being asked by the prosecutor. Taylor had specifically requested a female attorney.

“I have been informed that the complainant is emotionally unstable with a tendency to seek out older men and engage in fantasizing,” Clinton, then named Hillary D. Rodham, wrote in the affidavit. “I have also been informed that she has in the past made false accusations about persons, claiming they had attacked her body. Also that she exhibits an unusual stubbornness and temper when she does not get her way.”

Clinton also wrote that a child psychologist told her that children in early adolescence “tend to exaggerate or romanticize sexual experiences,” especially when they come from “disorganized families, such as the complainant.”

The victim vigorously denied Clinton’s accusations and said there has never been any explanation of what Clinton was referring to in that affidavit. She claims she never accused anyone of attacking her before her rape.

“I’ve never said that about anyone. I don’t know why she said that. I have never made false allegations. I know she was lying,” she said. “I definitely didn’t see older men. I don’t know why Hillary put that in there and it makes me plumb mad.”

if hillary wants to be president, she better deal with this, effectively, and but quick

The victim’s second main grievance with Clinton stems from the newly revealed audio recordings, which were taped in a series of interviews of Clinton with Arkansas reporter Roy Reed, who was researching an article on the Clintons that was ultimately never published. The Free Beacon found the tapes archived at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, amidst thousands of pieces of Clinton history that are being periodically released for public consumption.

On the tapes, Clinton, who speaks in a Southern drawl, appears to acknowledge that she was aware of her client’s guilt, brags about successfully getting the only piece of physical evidence thrown out of court, and laughs about it all whimsically.

“He took a lie detector test. I had him take a polygraph, which he passed, which forever destroyed my faith in polygraphs,” Clinton says on the recording, failing to hold back some chuckles.

She then describes how she discovered that investigators had cut out and lost a section of the suspect’s underwear that they said contained the victim’s blood. Clinton brought the remaining underwear segment to a Nobel Prize-winning blood expert in Brooklyn, NY, she explained, in order to convince him to lend his heavyweight reputation and influence to her defense case.

“And so the, sort of the story through the grapevine was, if you get him interested in the case, then you know you had the foremost expert in the world willing to testify so that it came out the way you wanted it to come out,” Clinton said.

Clinton told the judge that the famous expert was willing to testify. Instead of the original charge of first-degree rape, the prosecutors let Taylor plead to a lesser charge: unlawful fondling of a child. According to the Free Beacon, Taylor was sentenced to one year behind bars, with two months reduced for time served. The second attacker was never charged.

i’m pretty sure this rape victim will be handed a prominent prime time slot at the republican national convention in 2016

No prob.

“Professional engineers will look at this, and they’re all very skeptical,” he says. “That’s great. I love their skepticism.” The biggest consideration is accounting for large trucks that need to turn. We’re talking delivery and tucks with trailers. These automobiles require very large turning radiuses. While it makes truck driver’s life easier, it also means smaller vehicles can take that turn at very fast speeds. “This design requires you to have a much tighter corner radius,” says Falbo. “These large truck operators, they are professional drivers they can actually make tighter turns than these standards normally say they would. The real answer is that I think you’re going to have to be a little stricter on your trucks in any number of ways.”

And who knows what he might know about operating a bicycle.

Falbo proposes a waiting area, just past the crosswalk where cyclists can stop. Cars will stop behind the crosswalk, bikes will halt ahead of it, and pedestrians are free to cross the street uninterrupted. This has the added benefit of making cyclists more visible to turning cars, and it’s a safe space for cyclists to wait while wanting to turn left. Instead of merging into the flow of traffic, riders can to a two-step left turn, and wait for a signal to turn.

He’s proposing that cyclists behave like pedestrians in order to make his design work.

The most difficult part of being in the bicycle industry for me is fending off the nuts who really don’t give a shit about those of us who are dedicated cyclists, but hate cars so much they want to drag everyone out of their car and force them to use bikes. They are doing it wrong.

There is a prominent person in the industry who reacted to a minor suggestion about a video (which he sent out to the public for reactions) with a scathing email about my lack of effort in making more cyclists. What an ass.

I see myself as someone who serves people who are cyclists. It’s not my job to make more.

re: #96 wrenchwench

That’s what gets people killed.

In my opinion lane splitting is fine if you keep your head on straight. So is sliding head and planting yourself in front of the stopped car in the lane you’re occupying (right / slow, or left turn.) But what fucks cyclists up is when drivers aren’t encouraged to treat them like legal traffic when they’re in the road. I don’t need an entire lane to myself most of the time, but when I signal left and glance to clear that’s not an indication for some asshole to gas it and try to get past me.

The last thing cyclists need is more confusion in the mind of the average intellect behind the wheel.

re: #115 b_sharp

That depends. CA Law states that we are to ride as close as practicable to the right edge of the TRAFFIC LANE, not the ROAD, unless there’s a rideable shoulder bike lane, unless you’re going the same speed as traffic, which is quite doable in the city.

Sometimes we ‘take the lane’, because we are intentionally preventing the driver from trying to pass, because WE know it’s not safe for them to do so. Other times, we’re going near enough to, or over the speed limit (say, on a descent) that we’re not impeding traffic AND we need the full width of the lane for cornering.

If there’s a handbook for cars, there’s one for bikes. The same one. People driving bikes often do it wrong. On the other hand, making a car slow down is not illegal in most circumstances, while holding up traffic often is.

It is if they’re trying to move over to an upcoming left turn lane, or intent to make a left turn at the next intersection. Considering how little deference drivers give to cyclist’s signals it’s often wise to physically occupy the lane you will need way in advance of needing it.

Ok, there’s a point I was unsure of. It’s the driving lane not the road.

There is no way a cyclist here can keep up with traffic except during rush hour when traffic slows down a bit. No hills here.

So I can assume then that people riding down the centre simply are ignorant of safe practices unless there are extenuating circumstances.

That will perhaps tone down my frustration somewhat.

Once, something like fifteen years ago I had someone try to door me on purpose. Totally empty street early in the morning on my way to work, no traffic, made eye contact through his rear view mirror, and something just seemed wrong. So I swerved out just as he threw the door out trying to catch me and cleared it by inches.

Also when I was in college there was a series of police reports in the local paper about some asshole with an umbrella walking on the Burke-Gillman who would clothesline or attempt to clothesline cyclists on the trail. Don’t know if they ever caught that asshole.

When you’re on a bike you can see things drivers don’t, like broken glass or other debris in the gutter pan. And cars rarely worry about getting doored, because they’re big and people watch out for them.

Where I ride depends on the road, the conditions, and traffic.

If it’s in town, I ride in the traffic lane, along the right edge, leaving a buffer as I pass parked cars.

If there’s a long stretch with no parked cars, I may move further right.

If it’s on a country road with no shoulder, I ride close to the edge of the road - group riding really helped me learn how to hold a line.

If I’m going 90% or more of the speed limit, and the road is full of blind corners I stick with the center of the lane, till I come to a wider and/or straighter part where I can be passed safely.

if there’s a wide, clean bike lane, I’ll ride there.

I’m feeling really a little thick here, but why are we supposed to care that some guy may have posted a photo of his penis? He’s not even an elected official.

According to the Gawker article:

He “was involved in some sort of flirty, lurid exchange of emails and texts with a Twitter user named @currahee88,” a longtime Twitter follower of the professor’s says.

I get he’s married, which would kind of make him a jerk, but why is everybody interested? As far as I understand, the exchange was consensual.

By the way, if people who are not women trying to meet men are unaware, phallic selfies are extremely commonplace. I get more than I’d like to acknowledge publicly, but it should be noted that this isn’t unusual behavior.

It’s of interest here because it is possible this guy was targeted for criticizing Greenwald and Snowden, which would put some others here in line for similar targeting, although arguable only if they do something dumb. And some here (see ‘Charles’) are always being targeted anyway, for other reasons as well as the same one.

10 june 1940 : As a french officer in a cavalry recon unit he was asked to go on patrol near the border of belgium as enemy troops moves had been reported.

Riding through woods he and his unit finally reach a hill where they think they will have a good point of view. And an excellent one they had! They started to count the panzers they could see but it was too much and when they decided to get back they were already surrounded and had no way back.

Shorewood resident charged with 13 felonies over alleged multiple voting

Robert Monroe, a 50-year-old Shorewood health insurance executive, was charged Friday with 13 felonies related to his voting a dozen times in five elections between 2011 and 2012 using his own name as well as that of his son and his girlfriend’s son.

“During 2011 and 2012, the defendant, Robert Monroe, became especially focused upon political issues and causes, including especially the recall elections,” the complaint asserts in its introduction.

wispolitics.com reported the investigation into Monroe’s multiple voting last week after Milwaukee County Judge J.D. Watts ordered the records related to a secret John Doe investigation be made public after the investigation was closed.

According to those records, Monroe was considered by investigators to be the most prolific multiple voter in memory. He was a supporter of Gov. Scott Walker and state Sen. Alberta Darling, both Republicans, and allegedly cast five ballots in the June 2012 election in which Walker survived a recall challenge.

According to the John Doe records, Monroe claimed to have a form of temporary amnesia and did not recall the election day events when confronted by investigators.

Rand getting some crossover appeal
Crossfire’s Van Jones Is ‘Loving’ This Rand Paul Guy Right Now

This guy is talking common sense, thank goodness, especially about Iraq,” Jones said, before showing a clip of Paul saying he would not be willing to send his son to fight in that country. “Well, hallelujah! Rand Paul says he wouldn’t send his kids to die in Iraq. I’ve got two boys, neither would I.”

On top of that, Jones agreed with Paul that the whole mess in Iraq is Dick Cheney’s fault. And even better, Paul recently said “he wants to build a stronger American democracy right here by, among other things, restoring voting rights for some former prisoners.”

“I love this!” Jones exclaimed. “You stop trying to fix every other country and get more Americans a real stake in this country. I am loving this guy.”

It’s certainly trivial to make a fake iphone chat with someone. Just set an accomplice’s contact info to have the target’s name, and have a chat. The “evidence” screenshot just shows Schinder’s name at the top, but doesn’t show the phone # or email that is being communicated with.

Of course, since Schindler doesn’t seem to be denying it, even with so much at stake, it’s probably legit.

I’d be concerned that the center of force from the crosswind would be significantly in front of the center of gravity, so that the whole thing would swing in a crosswind, not just blow off course. Actually, I meant the ‘bent. Rider all the way back by the rear wheel, fairing to catch the wind…

I figure riding position on the concept bike would be standard road bike position, based on the location of the saddle and the brifters. But the cross section of the frame and the wheels would make it very prone to crosswinds. I had a bike with Mavic CXP30s, a high-section rim, when I later replaced them with Velocity Aeroheads, the bike got a lot less vulnerable.

The steering, yeah - the fork looks to pivot from a lot farther back than a normal bike. That would make the angle as it is turned VERY different.

Golly gee…. this is absolute bs from the usual suspect:

The IRS and Congress have been notified that the IRS was examining all nonprofits seeking 501(c)(4) status and giving closer scrutiny to some that appeared politically involved. That cut across the political spectrum - not just Tea Party groups. All groups.

Issa purposefully sought answers to a specific question - were Tea Party groups investigated for close scrutiny. The IRS responded yes.

The IRS IG also indicated that liberal groups were given closer scrutiny too. And the reason that there was a cheat sheet for closer scrutiny is because the IRS doesn’t have the means to investigate every single group seeking nonprofit status because Congress doesn’t want to fund the IRS to administer the law they enacted.

So the IRS has to figure out ways to administer the law in a way that tries to be nonpartisan and impartial.

But to claim that the IRS targeted Tea Party groups alone is patently false.

The dishonesty of trying to claim otherwise is staggering, but typical for Hoft.

Oh, that I can tell you exactly. You sort of ‘tack’ into the wind a bit. Worst case is when something suddenly breaks the wind, (a windbreak, not break wind), then it wants to dart back over.

The faring is mounted on soft mounts I built down at the fork and also at the top of the handlebar area. It really doesn’t have much room to get leverage.

It’s actually incredibly stable. I’ve been up over 40 going down a hill many times, (unloaded), solid as a rock. (and it really holds the speed on the flats). Above that speed I start getting a bit nervous…. The biggest problem is climbing. You’re not in a biometrically most efficient position, and there is no standing to get some extra umph up over the top. I just gear down and spin. I can keep it stable going uphill to about 4 MPH, after that it wants to start to wobble a bit, but if I’m going that slow, I may just as well think about pushing it.

Even if it were true that TP groups were exclusively subjected to increased scrutiny, there’s not been a single confirmed example of a group whose application was denied during the period in question. And they were free to operate as a political group even while their application was under review, which totally neuters the assertion that their civil rights were violated. So I’ve no idea what the “crime” alleged is.

The deadly Ebola virus outbreak in West Africa has hit “unprecedented” proportions, according to relief workers on the ground.

“The epidemic is out of control,” Dr. Bart Janssens, director of operations for Doctors Without Borders, said in statement.

There have been 567 cases and 350 deaths since the epidemic began in March, according to the latest World Health Organization figures.

Ebola virus outbreaks are usually confined to remote areas, making it easier to contain. But this outbreak is different; patients have been identified in 60 locations in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia.

Officials believe the wide footprint of this outbreak is partly because of the close proximity between the jungle where the virus was first identified and cities such as Conakry. The capital in Guinea has a population of 2 million and an international airport.

People are traveling without realizing they’re carrying the deadly virus. It can take between two and 21 days for someone to feel sick after they’ve been exposed.

Ebola is a violent killer. The symptoms, at first, mimic the flu: headache, fever, tiredness. What comes next sounds like something out of a horror movie: significant diarrhea and vomiting, while the virus shuts off the blood’s ability to clot.

As a result, patients often suffer internal and external hemorrhaging. Many die in an average of 10 days.

“We have reached our limits,” Janssens said.

BTW, instead of using cardboard boxes, I’m using plastic bins from a service called BungoBox. 32 large bins, 3 extra-large bins, two wheeled carts that the large bins stack on top of, and two plastic wardrobe boxes, for two weeks, for ~$100. They drop them off at your origin location and pick them up at your destination.

when we moved our offices down the block, that’s what the movers used. They were sort of like the big crates that produce comes in, an overlapping set of fingers at the top. Stacked nicely one on another, could put 4 or more on a mover’s dolly and move them easy. Really impressed me.

I do IT consulting and probably do an office move every month or 2. That’s what they all seem to use, most of them have special crates and packaging for servers and desktops now too. Those guys are scary efficient, one company I worked with a couple of months ago moved a 150 person office in about 6 hours.

re: #286 RealityBasedSteve

I get the feeling that you’re a disciple of John Forrester (Vehicular Cycling). Not that I disagree…. I always get asked, in amazement, You ride on roads???

RBS

I’ve ridden thousands of miles on roads. It’s reasonably safe. When you weigh the risk of getting turned into road stew by a truck against the risks inherent in being a couch potato, I like my odds. People have generally been nice, even solicitous. There’s a few who—-well, the guys who drove off the road, off the shoulder, and onto the grass so they could pass me on the right whilst I was slogging along on the shoulder—-they took more of a chance with their own lives than with mine, so I can’t put it down to malice.

Put it down to kids being kids.

Now this maybe even ties in with what I was gonna say about politics: it is playing with fire to vote for someone who has no elfin business holding office, on the theory that if you do, you can be sure that your side will win. No you can’t be sure. Not if he/she stands any chance of losing against the other alternative from the other side. There’s the off chance that your guy may snatch defeat from victory. People do that. They put their foot in it, they email a photo of their junk to a teenager, whatever. Or their health fails. Or there’s a landslide in the other direction and they get buried.

Many a slip there is twixt cup and lip. Don’t play with fire. Let the other side nominate the tolerably bad candidate rather than take any chance at all that the disaster-should-he-win, wins.

Sheesh — their outright glee and gloating is pretty loathsome:

She’s also RT’ing a nasty parody account that’s repurposed the old, now deleted, account’s avatar image and name. [edit: the parody account has now been deleted too]

Appelbaum, who published some of the most sensitive Snowden sources/methods leaks is joining in the gloating too.

This Death and Taxes blog post nicely sums up how these folks are generally rationalizing their behavior:

“Generally speaking, I am incredibly against the idea of publicizing someone’s nude pics on the internet without their consent. I think it’s an incredibly shitty thing to do to someone, regardless of whether or not I agree with them politically. However, I will make a gleeful exception in this one case for someone who clearly is not too fond of privacy himself. I will make an exception for a person who argued against privacy for me and my fellow American citizens. Because in this case, it’s just straight-up karma. I mean, I’m hardly going to argue for the privacy of someone who wouldn’t argue for mine.”

The author then of course proceeded to post the alleged phone screen shot.

That’s exactly what they are. The guy I used says he mostly markets to businesses and moving companies, and any residential business is gravy. The concept is pretty new in the consumer/residential space, so a lot of people don’t know about the option.

I’d seen them years ago, used for office moves, but they’re way too expensive to buy. What’s new is the short term rentals, delivery/pickup of boxes, and online ordering, which makes it really easy.

re: #103 GeneJockey

This. Bicycles are VEHICLES, not pedestrians. We turn from the appropriate VEHICLE lane, or we walk the bike. Thinking of bikes as pedestrians leads to parents telling their kids to ride FACING traffic, and they get killed.

On top of everything else, there’s the business of closing speeds. A bicycle going with traffic, even at just 10mph, encounters cars at a 20 mph less closing velocity than a bicycle going the other way. If the speed limit is 40, that’s a difference between a closing speed of 30 and a closing speed of 50.

That’s huge.
