In Which a Right Wing Website Mocks Obama for Acting to Protect a Vital Ecological System

I’ve had this blindingly stupid post at Michelle Malkin’s Twitchy hate site open since yesterday afternoon, trying to figure out how to write about the sheer idiocy of not understanding how important the basic biological process of pollination is to the human species and its food supply, but I remain gobsmacked that people can actually be this deliberately ignorant of issues that affect every part of their lives: ‘Can’t Make This Up!’ Obama Admin’s Laser-Like Focus on This Is Beyond Parody.

You don’t even want to look at the comments.

Basic science.

Something the GOP in 2014 is openly contemptuous of.

I lost my bees a couple of winters ago. The other day my sister spoke to someone who told her about a friend who is a longtime commercial beekeeper and he lost a significant number of his hives this past winter. According to the Baltimore Sun, one third of hives across the country were lost last winter and in some areas, like Maryland, half of the hives were lost.

This is a serious problem. It’s too bad that there are people who are so politically motivated they can’t see an obvious problem when it’s staring them in the face.

I believe there’s also been a decline in other pollinators, such as bumble bees. It’s also occurring in Europe.

Key oil refinery ‘seized by rebels’

Sunni rebels in Iraq say they have fully captured the country’s main oil refinery at Baiji, north of Baghdad.

The refinery had been under siege for 10 days with the militant offensive being repulsed several times.

The complex supplies a third of Iraq’s refined fuel and the battle has already led to petrol rationing.

As if the MS senate race wasn’t polarized enough, now the Tea Party plans to send poll watchers out tomorrow to, you know, make sure no shenanigans happen.

National tea party groups say they are working to “ensure a free and fair election” by sending several dozen observers to precincts to watch who votes during Tuesday’s GOP contest, concerned about six-term Sen. Thad Cochran’s efforts to persuade Mississippi Democrats to cast ballots. Challenger Chris McDaniel and the tea party portray cross-party voting as dangerous and even illegal, though state law allows it.

This should be interesting. Remember, these are the same people who FREAKED OUT about the Black Panthers.

“Well, if I called Nancy Pelosi a c*** — and I’ll go one better, a f****** useless c*** — I can’t really say that. But Bill Maher and Jon Stewart can, and nobody’s going to stop them from working because of it.

Really? Has anyone ever heard Stewart say anything like that? Maher might have used the c word on Palin, and IIRC he caught hell for it. He is a douchebag anyway.

and defending Mel Gibson -

“Mel Gibson is in a town that’s run by Jews, and he said the wrong thing because he’s actually bitten the hand that I guess has fed him - and doesn’t need to feed him anymore because he’s got enough dough,” Oldman said. “He’s like an outcast, a leper, you know?”

“We’re all f****** hypocrites,” he added. “That’s what I think about it. The policeman who arrested him has never used the word n***** or that f****** Jew?”

I don’t think the cop arrested him for using bigoted language Gary, he was arrested for being drunk and belligerent in public.

That all depends on what the landlord tells me. I only managed to pay about 3/4 of my rent last month and I haven’t made anywhere close to what I’d need for this month. I need to talk to him and to my family tomorrow and see what my options are.

I’m so tired of looking for work. All I want is to have a steady paycheck again so I don’t have to deal with this shit. If I had a job it wouldn’t be a problem. I’d pay at the beginning of the month like clockwork, just as I’ve always done.

As long as they don’t spray on everything in sight, sure. Spraying on a $30,000 harp would result in catapication. The smell of eau de cat piss in the space would be discouraged. Oh, and it’s furnished. It’s got a sink and laundry facilities and a really comfy futon. We’re considering buying a new reefer and the one in the house will be going out back. Functional. No oven or stove out there, but that can be worked out.

Helping other people shouldn’t be anything but normal. If we have assets that can be shared, they should be shared. Please refer to the preamble of the Constitution noting “the common good”. It’s obscene that “rugged individualism” has replaced “the common good” among so many people in this country. That is not what we were founded upon.

Listen up, GOPers. Bees ARE important. How important? Well, their extinction would be an existential threat to the human race, worse than Iranian nukes and much worse than the latest chaos in Iraq. Hell, it would be worse than Russian nukes, which is saying a lot. Literally. 135 Amory Blaine  Jun 24, 2014 3:39:38am

Heh. A fun read.

All or Nothing for Scott Walker

Scott Walker’s Achilles heel may be his star-struck need to be loved and noticed by national Republican heavyweights.

During the furor caused by the radical governor’s decimation of Wisconsin government in the dark winter and spring of 2011, Walker was comically recorded giving warm platonic phone sex to a brilliant prankster pretending to be democracy-killer David Koch. Walker, usually a publicly dreary on-message robot, became an effusive chatterbox with fake-Koch, even accepting an invitation to one of fake-Koch’s imaginary Xanadu mansions in California after the smoke had cleared on Wisconsin democracy.

Walker apparently did the same thing in August of that year in a revealing and potentially incriminating email to the real Karl Rove. Earlier this year, when emails were released from the Kelly Rindfleisch investigation from the time Walker was pretending to be Milwaukee County Executive, Walker’s contributions were short and terse. It was as if he could barely be bothered with his puny office drones and the details of the campaign that was being run out of his office in the Courthouse, much less (and I mean much less) his duties as county exec.

People like the Koch Brothers who promote and popularize this sort of thinking are not stupid enough to take it literally, they just see it as a means to advance their own agenda.

And that what makes the role of anonymous money in politics all the more dangerous.

Enough reasonable people voted for Bush for him to be elected (ignoring for now the Florida shenanigans). America was getting along okay, so sometimes change is good even when the result cannot be foreseen.

Sorry to hear that about Oldman, although I don’t think I’ve seen him in anything in 20 years.

BTW, he’s not a “conservative”—he’s an out and out racist and misogynist who seems fond of name calling.

If he lived in the UK, he could support the British Defence League and that lot known as UKIP with his views. Or there are plenty of orgs like that in the US that would love to have him.

Sorry Gary, but if you hate Semites, brown people or women, you are screwed and will just have to get over yourself.

You will note that Oldman has been married 4 times with at least one wife accusing him of alcoholism and domestic violence. None of the marriages other than the current one (at 6 yrs) lasted more than 2-4 yrs. It does make you wonder how many times he verbally abused them and called them “c****” just as he publicly called Nancy Pelosi?

161 HappyWarrior  Jun 24, 2014 5:34:52am

Sucks about Oldman. 162 Justanotherhuman  Jun 24, 2014 5:35:21am

Oldman is like many others—they make their own mistakes and blame it on their “youth” or their drinking or drug taking, or other circumstances, and in their waning years, all of a sudden become the arbiters of what is “moral” and what should be correct in the world.

That isn’t “wisdom”, that is the real hypocrisy. Realize there are generational differences, that things change, that they will never revert back to your own idealized portrait of the past that you’ve drawn in your declining years.

We all do it to some extent, but coloring it with racism, misogyny and outright reactionary politics should be called for what it is. But I suppose some people refuse to learn over a lifetime and just rest on their laurels.

As farmers, we’ve had beehives for decades, until Colony Collapse Disorder first made its ugly appearance a few years ago. Within the space of about 4-5 months, we lost all eight of our hives. One hive was filled with dead bees, all the other hives absconded and headed to the surrounding woods.
So far this year, for the first time, I’ve seen an alarming small number of honeybees in the yards and fields.

Mornin’ everyone.

Apparently black voter turn out in Mississippi is pretty good so far today. That means Cochran’s outreach strategy of announcing he’d be reaching out to black voters (without actually doing so) so that his opponent would explode into a racist rage and bring back memories of the glory days of pre-civil rights Mississippi - which in turn would cause a huge protest vote against McDaniel - is working.

Mornin’ everyone.

Then the Dem candidate can defeat Cochrane in Nov.

I like the strategy. : )

The right wing is anti-science, a-historical, and counterfactual. Logic and reasoning don’t begin to penetrate the derp that surrounds their deep unhinged hatred of all things relating to President Obama and his Administration.

They perpetuate nonsensical conspiracies (Benghazi, IRS, etc.) that are unsupported by the facts.

It might help them sleep through the night (or maybe those fever-dream/nightmares are what gets them through the night, all while clutching to their guns like a binky) but it is corrosive to the political system.

These folks think that trying to figure out why pollinators like bees are dying off is some waste of time or money, ignoring that the entire food chain requires pollinators to perpetuate the various plant species on which all other life is based. Figuring out why bees are dying could lead to preventative measures that would insure that this keystone species survives.

But that’s not the half of it; you’ve got nitwits who think that global warming, climate change, and sea level rises are just a part of a cyclical nature thing, and even after being flooded out time and time again in recent years, think that this doesn’t have anything to do with what mankind has been pumping into the atmosphere in prodigious quantities.

This isn’t just skepticism; it’s outright willful blindness to the science, which all trends to higher sea levels, higher global temperatures, and changed climates (which cannot be confused with weather, that could result in more extremes - both heat and cold). Warmer temperatures in the winter over the Northeast could actually produce even more snowfall because of lake effect - with warmer weather, the Great Lakes don’t freeze over and the lake effect mechanism doesn’t shut down. This past winter was the exception to the longer trend of heavy snowfalls across the Great Lakes as the lakes froze over to a greater degree than in years.

Do people really want to be associated with a party that is anti-science and anti-rational? I don’t.

The people who are behind spreading this sort of propaganda are not stupid enough to believe in it, they just see it as a tool to promote their agenda.

That is why they rely on politicians who either truly believe it or can sound sincere when they present it to their target audience.

Great read in Boston Magazine about my State Senator Linda Dorcena Forry. Linda upset the status-quo when she won the First Suffolk District which had long been held by white, Irish-American men from South Boston. Linda is a black Haitian-American woman from Dorchester.

The article focuses on the St. Patricks Day breakfast, which is a highly politicized event that is typical emceed by the state senator from the First Suffolk district.

A few months after her victory, she started making calls to top South Boston figures to make clear that she would soon begin the extensive planning for the event. One of those calls was to Bill Linehan, an old-school city councilor from Southie who had filled in as host the previous year, while the Senate seat was vacant. The two had a friendly conversation, according to Forry, in which they agreed to discuss the matter more later. She says that Linehan—who declined to be interviewed for this article—ended the chat by asking that she not speak to the media.

A few days later, on September 6, Forry woke up to a surprise on the Globe’s front page: Linehan was quoted in a story about the breakfast, suggesting that he should host. Nick Collins, the Southie state representative whom Forry beat in her Senate race, also voiced support for him.

Forry, Linehan and Collins were all to speak at the same event, and Forry made sure to address the issue afterwards, in the street:

But afterward, as Forry, Linehan, and Collins walked to their cars, Forry stopped on the sidewalk and turned to her colleagues. Breaking into a broad smile, she asked, “Bill—what the fuck are you thinking?”

“And then you, Nick—what are you talking about?”

Linehan tried to defend himself, but Forry would accept only unconditional surrender. It didn’t take long. That afternoon, Forry’s office sent out a joint press release in which Linehan, like a hostage in a forced-confession video, announced that his remarks had been misunderstood, and he was looking forward to seeing Forry host.

It’s a local story, but a great read nonetheless:

215 Bulworth  Jun 24, 2014 7:24:20am

The NYT this morning:

ERBIL, Iraq — The Sunni militant extremists who have seized a broad area of Iraq extended their control on Monday to the country’s entire western frontier, having secured nearly all official border crossings with Syria and the only one with Jordan, giving them the semblance of the new independent state that they say they intend to create in the region.

With the seizure of the Jordan crossing, which militants from the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria first assaulted late Sunday night, the Iraqi military defenses crumpled, as they have in other battlegrounds in the western and northern parts of the country over the past two weeks. ISIS control of the Jordan border raised the risks that its insurgency could menace not just Syria and Iraq, but Jordan and Saudi Arabia, two important American allies.

216 Bulworth  Jun 24, 2014 7:30:41am

Also from the NYT — Iraq promises immunity to U.S. military advisors

That’s the headline. The text reads a little differently.

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration said on Monday that it has accepted from the Iraqi government the same sort of immunity agreement for newly dispatched Special Operations troops that it refused to accept in 2011, when it opted to withdraw all American troops from Iraq rather than keep a residual force behind.

Iraq’s government provided assurances in a diplomatic note that American troops being sent to help combat a growing Islamist insurgency will be exempt from Iraqi law, officials said Monday. But in 2011, American military lawyers deemed such assurances insufficient and insisted troops stay only if legal immunity was approved by the Iraqi Parliament.

Rangel should have been gone after all of his tax shenanigans, but his constituents keep sending him back.

Right wingers are raging that the media is ignoring the IRS and VA scandals.

Ummmm, that would be because the IRS isn’t a scandal. They were doing their job of trying to figure out which entities weren’t entitled to 501(c)(4) exemptions. Darrell Issa was guilty of pushing a meme that the IRS unfairly targeted Tea Party and conservative groups, but the IG found that the IRS was targeting all kinds of entities, including liberal ones. IOW, it wasn’t a scandal. But that isn’t keeping the right wing busy trying to gin up a controversy.

Now, there is indeed an issue with the way the VA has been dealing with veterans and the waiting lists have been manipulated. That’s getting decent coverage in media outlets nationally. But this is also an issue that has been going on for years - dating back generations.

We treat veterans like crap; for as much as folks like to claim that they venerate veterans, it’s out of sight and out of mind. They need increasing medical care as they age, and the current generation of veterans who fought in Afghanistan and Iraq have a different set of medical issues due to the fact that many survived what would have been unsurvivable in prior conflicts. It requires more intensive care, more technology, and that doesn’t even begin to touch on the mental health support that they need.

I’m reading a book about the case called We Are Not Afraid. It provides quite a bit of back story, both on the lives of the three men as well as the Civil Rights movement from the sit-ins to the bus rides, to the Freedom Summer. Almost 50 years ago to the day they were killed.

The anecdotes in the book, the stuff that went on, the way southern Whites talked to Blacks (and White “race traitors”), the reprisals and violence, pretty astounding. And I don’t think any of it would have changed if Civil Rights leaders from the North and South hadn’t risen up and risked themselves.

Bob Moses, who was a leader in the Freedom Summer project, comes across as quite a fellow. And he’s still living (according to Wiki).

But afterward, as Forry, Linehan, and Collins walked to their cars, Forry stopped on the sidewalk and turned to her colleagues. Breaking into a broad smile, she asked, “Bill—what the fuck are you thinking?”

Basically you choose a burrito or taco and then your meat or veggies if you want and various condiments. Quite good actually for fast food and I’ve seen the same model it uses on many other fast food places.

re: #231 lawhawk

The media is ignoring the IRS business because the facts of the case have failed to live up to the hyperbole spun out by the GOP when it first came to everybody’s attention. Despite months and months of screaming fits, there has been no proof that any TP group had its civil rights abridged or its political speech silenced.

And it’s not ignoring the VA business, it’s doing what the media does best: Putting the whole story on the backburner because newer and juicier stories have come to their attention. As you noted, the issues with the VA are decades in the making and won’t be solved tomorrow simply by engaging in screaming fits. It’s going to take time, it’s going to take cooperation, and (most importantly) a shitload of money to fix.

It would be fairer to say that the stories are not being ignored, they’re simply not generating the sort of “WORSE THAN WATERGATE” controversy that the wingnuts thrive on. They wanted the media’s help in turning public opinion towards impeachment and it’s just not happening.

No food trucks yet, but kebab has become big.

Here in my downtown, for many years there was one kebab restaurant, and it usually catered to students who’d been out drinking the night away. When I first arrived here a couple of years ago, there were two kebab restaurants.

Now there are 20, scattered throughout the downtown core. Even the Vietnamese have converted a couple of their food stands to kebab stands.

Kebab. It’s what’s for dinner.

There is a BBQ place up here that has the rack of hot sauces. I just wish there was a decent vegetarian restaurant around here (at the moment, there isn’t even a bad one).

Or at least one that didn’t serve red meat at all.

That said, I still have to go, when I’m out, for the all veggie sub (w/slices of what passes for pepper jack cheese) on my whole grain roll. Skip the iceberg and go for the spinach and it’s like a salad on a roll. And Subway does that just as well as any other place.

He also wrote that “hispanic history [is] defined as a history of victimhood leading to a future of victimhood owned by you…”

Oh? That primary already happened? Well I guess the lunatic that writes Stockman’s tweets will have to find a new job in the interim.

Speaking of Texas, Rolling Stone has a magazine about the Texas wingnuts and how Dan “Not the guy from Sportscenter and SI” Patrick managed to convince voters that his opponent who is as right wing as the next guy in Texas was a sekrit liberal because the guy to his credit is not a total dick to Hispanics.

Yep good money in that and the only real work is finding an outrage which isn’t hard when you’ve already determined Barack Obama is the anti-christ.

Lawrence O’Donnell Praises Koch Brothers in Emotional MSNBC Return

O’Donnell then said, “Brace yourself for the first positive words about David Koch said on this program.” Yes, it turns out that the hospital O’Donnell got treated at was the beneficiary of donations by one half of the infamous Koch brothers. And while O’Donnell made it clear his political views on the Kochs have not changed, he personally thanked David Koch for giving so much to make sure this hospital had enough resources to take care of so many.

Wow. I’ve been super busy and not able to keep up with the conversations.

What the hell is going on with the world?

Bitching about bees. TeaParty insanity. 9/11 Troofers. Crazy actors revealing they are crazy.

Hey, there is always BENGHAZI to fall back on for a default position.

But reading Charles tweeting with a Troofer reminded me to ask the Lizards about info needed to keep a good friend from going down the Troofer road. I do not know what has happened, or who has been bending his ear with crap, but he has mentioned some ‘concerns’ with 9/11 and starting to get weird.

Does anyone have any good sites or other online info that really put down any sort of 9/11 was done by our government or other strange conspiracy bullshit? It is not something I ever needed to check before. I figure the Lizards, and especially Charles from the tone of what is being said, could really help me out. Thanks!

For the artistic and non-color challenged amongst my fellow lizards…

So I am refurbishing the kitchen in my parents old condo in preparation for putting it on the market. The new tile floor is mostly portland cement gray (base white tiles with swirls and streaks of gray) with light gray grouting.

The refinished cabinets are “titanium” which is a slighter darker gray than the floor color with varied color speckled black counter-tops and brushed nickel knobs and pulls.

The back splash is “olde school” 4” stamped metal tiles that alternate between black porcelain and brushed nickel finish.

The new appliances (Range, Built-in Microwave/hood, Dishwasher, and Refrigerator) are black.

My brother wants to paint the walls an extremely light shade of gray (aka: painters white) while I feel that we need to add some color to the room.

When I picture the “gray on gray on gray with black” that he is suggesting I imagine the walls looking as if they had a coat of primer on them and the room looking as though it was never finished.

Any suggestions for a contrasting wall color that isn’t too extreme for a large percentage of the prospective buyers tastes?

I never said Obama was Hitler. Simply stated there are similarities between them.

Wonder what similarities? Didn’t win the election but was appointed to the position? Started war(s) with countries that had not attacked him? She should list the similarities.
