Dr. Ben Carson’s Novel Idea for a “Compromise” on Gay Marriage

Why didn’t anyone think of this before?

Never let it be said that young Earth creationist neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson doesn’t know how to compromise. Just yesterday, he explained on a Newsmax TV show his idea for a grand compromise on gay marriage, and it’s amazingly simple: gay people should not be allowed to get married.

This man is a compromisin’ fool. Get him into the White House right away!

There is no compromising on Ben Carson’s foolishness. He took every last bit of foolishness and pinned it on his sleeve.

I saw a Ben Carson fro President sticker on the back of a starter Acura yesterday. It wasn’t on the bumper, it was on the paint.

I’m glad that Ben could look inside the deepest parts of his soul and scrape together not one fucking iota of empathy and sympathy for those that wish to share their lives together. Thankee Ben…. /////

If the phrase “creationist neurosurgeon” doesn’t send shudders down your spine, you’re probably 28°F and on a slab in the hospital basement.

Here is a compromise: Go live in theocracy because you hate democracy so much.

Dr. Michael Egnor, another neurosurgeon, is well-known in the skeptical circles for being an extremely ignorant creationist idiot:

Wingnuts are desperately afraid of marriage equality for one simple reason.

Once it is commonplace for Jeff and Steve, or Alice and Amy, to be just another couple in the suburbs, with the badass hybrid and 2.2 cats, there will be no chance for scapegoating to work.

Interesting, and aligns with my own observations. I would definitely put MDs and especially surgeons on the ‘Engineer’ side of scientific training. I.e., they’re trained with scientific knowledge but not trained to think like a scientist.

With engineers it’s sort of a professional defect - they “create” things by carefully designing them, so there is a temptation there. Dunno what’s that with neurosurgeons, but probably what you said, coupled with the wonderful complexity of the brain.

Seems to be very much a case-by-case thing. Engineers are certainly exposed to plenty of scientific thinking and reasoning, but it is possible to escape school without absorbing it. Naturally, the escapees always seem to be the loudest ones.

According to official statements from the General Conference, heterosexual marriages are the only biblically ordained grounds for sexual intimacy. Adventists do not perform same-sex marriages, and individuals who are openly homosexual cannot be ordained and may be disfellowshipped from the church membership.[43][44

No church has to confer the sacrament of matrimony on people who do not meet its standards. Granted, there was a time when the civil institution of marriage was identical or at least parallel with the sacrament.

Now the law says that the government cannot discriminate on grounds of race, religion or sexual orientation.

We separated Church and State over 200 years ago. Some folks still fail to process that message.

From the WashPost:

Sen. Thad Cochran is doing something remarkable in his effort to stave off a tea party challenge in Mississippi’s Republican runoff election on Tuesday. He’s running as a staunch defender of the federal government.

He has spoken some plain truths about one of the poorest states in the nation and its dependence on Washington. Mississippi has lived off the federal government for generations. When the South was solidly Democratic, Mississippi relied on the longevity and therefore the power of its delegation in Washington — politicians with names such as Eastland and Stennis, Montgomery and Whitten.

They steered a disproportionate share of the defense budget back to Mississippi. They provided money for other sectors of the economy. Federal safety-net programs brought back additional funding. Over the years, Mississippi got back far more in federal money than its residents sent to Washington in the form of tax payments. For a long time, the state has been at or near the top in the flow-of-funding competition. Cochran has helped continue that tradition as a senior member of the Appropriations Committee.

Life must be pretty hard for conservatives. They don’t want anything to change. Yet things keep changing. People, cultures, societies grow and learn. And yet they always want to go back to some prior period, which itself only existed after changes, small and large, had occured, creating the conditions upon which that era’s “normal” could be lived.

i read a very interesting study tracking down statements about the ‘ideal’ state of one’s native language, on the evidence of the many essays that have been written about it over the centuries

turns out no matter how many hundreds of years you trace it back, the ‘ideal’ form of one’s native language always seems to have existed just before the essayist was born

President Hillary Clinton Would Be Far More Conservative Than You Think

Hillary Clinton is neither a liberal nor a true conservative. Rather, she’s an electable Democratic candidate who leans to the right. She’s the Democratic version of Mitt Romney. President Hillary Clinton will be a conservative Barack Obama and a somewhat liberal George Bush. She’ll bail out banks in another collapse and send ground troops to a foreign country in the event of a terror attack. While Elizabeth Warren represents a confident liberal wing of the Democratic Party and Rand Paul is the darling of libertarian Republicans, Hillary Clinton is all things to everyone. She recently claimed that the Bible remains “the biggest influence” on her thinking and that she was dead broke, so pandering to too many voters at once might do her a disservice in the long run.

The fact that Hillary Clinton defines the term “centrist” might actually be a good thing, but Democrats should understand that they’re electing a person far more conservative than President Obama. If the GOP has a phrase called “Republicans In Name Only,” then Democrats should come up with a similar label for Hillary Clinton.

Reminds me of the time my sons were small. If I had anything extra on payday Fri, they would get a “treat” at McDonald’s or some other hamburger joint, when it was still halfway decent food, back in the ’60s; cheeseburgers weren’t even very popular. I don’t even think they had “kid’s meals” back then and no “value” menu. I never kept sodas or junk in the house. Desserts were usually puddings (at least they were made w/milk) and the occasional pie or cake; maybe cookies from time to time. Oh, they were so deprived!

When I was a kid growing up in 1970s Southern California, I think in that time (until 1981) I ate a McDonald’s maybe less than ten times.

Shakey’s Pizza, a few times - Tommy’s, of course, a few times as well and some other places my parents liked. But “going out to eat” was maybe once a month or so. It was pretty rare.

Behold the mighty intellect:

The following is a candidate for a proof of the existence of God.

Proposition: If a set is unique, then it exists.

Proof: If a set is unique, i.e. is properly specified so that a set having the properties is equal to the set, then even if the set has no members, it exists as the empty set.

Example x^2 + 1 = 0. Let A be the integer solutions. This set A is unique, but it is empty.

God is unique.
God contains other things and thus is a set.
Thus God is a unique set.
Therefore God exists.
God’s uniqueness.

Creator.
Moral law giver.
First cause.
Judge of the dead.
God is a set

Trinity is a set for those who define God to be the Trinity.
God contains therefore God is a set.

Been watching GoT from the beginning since I missed the first couple seasons. Kind of fun to see the backstory of all the stuff I missed but I don’t know if I wold have gotten hooked from the first few episodes. Still fun. Also interesting to see how young Arya is in the first episodes.

This is one of the odd effects of making a TV show out of a series of books that all take place over little more than a year, but end up being filmed over 5 or more years - the actors who were the right age for the characters at the start get a lot older than they were written as you go along. Arya’s probably the best example - she’s supposed to be about 11 when she heads to Braavos and up to that time most often mistaken for a boy, but Maisie Williams is now 17, and can’t really be mistaken for a boy anymore.

Sansa’s supposed to be about 13 or 14, and at that age it makes sense for Tyrion to say, “She’s just a child!”, but with Sophie Turner now 18, that rings false.

They seem to have retconned Tommen up to about 15 or so, so that Margaery Tyrell’s attentions become slightly less pedophilically creepy.

in any case, gritching about how the most likely democratic nominee is not as progressive as one might like and is actually acceptable to some people on wall st just ignores what an utterly fucked up political situation we find ourselves in

You mean this, right?

“Schindler’s subject matter is narrower than Deliso’s, being confined essentially to Bosnia. It is less a study of the role of al-Qa’ida and the mujahedin in Bosnia and more a diatribe against the Bosnian Muslims and the Bosnian cause. Despite the author’s claim to having had a youthful flirtation with Islam (p. 13), he is clearly hostile to the religion and views the Bosnian war on this basis: ‘Bosnia’s Muslims were really Muslims, and some of them adhered to a faith that was deeply hostile to Western concepts of freedom, democracy, and human rights.’ (p. 19) Furthermore, ‘Muhammad himself endorsed, and practiced, the violent spreading of the faith and considered it the obligation of every Muslim’; consequently, ‘As devout traditionalist Muslims, Izetbegovic and the SDA [Party of Democratic Action] leadership adhered to the ideology of jihad that stands at the center of their faith.’ Schindler considers the term ‘fundamentalist’ meaningless when applied to Islam, because ‘[a]ll truly believing Muslims are, from a Western viewpoint, “fundamentalists”’ (pp. 116-117). This hostility to Muslims and Islam appears to be the guiding motive behind Schindler’s book.”

That and this, which basically tries to excuse/downplay/deny the genocide in Bosnia, basically blaming the victims:

Schindler revises the death-toll of the Srebrenica massacre downward to ‘as many as two thousand Muslim men, mostly soldiers’ (p. 231) - although, in one of several internal contradictions in this book, he earlier put the figure at about seven thousand (p. 227). He argues that ‘[w]hile this was unquestionably a war crime, it is difficult to term it genocide’ (p. 231) - though it was not so difficult for the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, both of which formally described the Srebrenica massacre as ‘genocide’. Instead, Schindler portrays the Srebrenica massacre as Serb revenge for earlier Muslim attacks on Serb civilians, and employs a gross racial stereotype in the process: ‘To Mladic’s troops, who like all Bosnians believed in blood feuds and payback, this was simple revenge.’ (p. 231).

Schindler describes the siege of Sarajevo as a ‘siege manqué’ (p. 189) and as a ‘faux-siege’, where ‘conditions were much more normal than the Western media was willing to portray’ (p. 203), despite the Serb besiegers’ killing of thousands of people in Sarajevo during the war. Perhaps most tellingly of all, he claims (erroneously): ‘Ethnic cleansing, though unpleasant, was no more than the counterinsurgency doctrine learned by three generations of JNA [Yugoslav People’s Army] officers, who were trained in hunting down “fifth columnists” and “terrorists” by expelling sympathisers as well as fighters.’ (p. 82) He then endorses a CIA report, according to which: ‘The Bosnian Serb Army undertook these ethnic cleansing operations because it believed the Muslim population posed an armed threat or could act as a “Fifth Column” during the war with the Bosnian Government.’ (p. 82).

In the FUBAR saga of Meriam Ibrahim, it seems she has now been re-released.

Ibrahim and Wani, who is an American citizen, were at Khartoum airport on Tuesday with their two children attempting to leave the country when as many as 40 security agents detained the just-freed prisoner, according to the BBC.

“They were temporarily detained for several hours over questions related to their documents,” Marie Harf, a spokeswoman for the U.S. state department told journalists, adding that Sudan had guaranteed to the U.S. that the family was now safe.

The report speculated that the National Intelligence and Security Service — a key stakeholder in Sudanese politics — was unhappy with the recent decision to release Ibrahim and that “re-arresting her and her family was a way of making this point to the rest of the Sudanese government.”

“It is also conceivable that one part of NISS accepted Mrs Ibrahim’s release, while another section was not happy with it. Mrs Ibrahim’s release and re-arrest simply underline the fact that there are many decision-makers in Sudanese politics, and they do not always agree with each other,” it added.

So basically, NISS decided to be a bunch of assholes in order to voice their displeasure. Fuck that.

Christian Homeschooling Publishers Accused of Protecting Known Child Predators

There have been two other child predators (that we know of) who the Suarez’s actively protected. They demanded silence from those who knew and insisted on letting those predators have unfiltered access to family gatherings / child focused events. They insisted that families accept (what amounts to) a ‘zero accountability’ stance in regard to those men because they said the men had ‘repented’. And families who voiced concerned, or alerted other families to a potential danger, or who chose not to include the predators in their groups, were told they were in sin and were then condemned by the Suarez’s. One man, Roy Ballard, was later imprisoned for sexual assault against children. The other man they protected, Mike Marcum, was also imprisoned (for possession of child pornography).

I would ask: Why didn’t Igarashi go to the police at the time if she knew these men were convicted sex offenders? Part of their probation was more than likely to keep away from children.

A blog is no place to protect kids. It sounded as though Igarashi had an axe to grind and it put her claims in a different light.

It does look like law enforcement had been involved, but other witnesses and victims have been shamed into keeping silent.

One of the classic tactics abusers use after they victimize a person is to further oppress them by condemning them as ‘gossips’ or ‘slanderers’ if they don’t cover up the abusers actions.

Abusers will create smoke and clamor to divert attention away from their abuse by pretending the ‘sin of gossip’ is the Sin of all Sins and is therefore sufficient grounds to discount any charge of real sin against them.

It is in this point that Igarashi first mentions the safety of children. She writes,

I’ll just speak plainly here. If there are men who have sexually abused children (or are being investigated as child predators) and you are told to keep your mouth shut about it, then it’s time to do something. Leaving with your children is a good first step.

If you feel children may be in danger and speak out about it, you are not a gossip. If somebody gives you a long biblical treatise about how their view on how to handle child predators within the church is the only biblical one (and their view protects offenders and demands that other parents are not to be made aware) know they are flat wrong. If you’re told that you’re ‘possibly unsaved’ if you disagree with their views, you need to know that is a lie.

It’s a tie.

Because National Security Agency (NSA) whistleblower might be locked up in a U.S. Super Max prison had it not been for Russian President Vladimir Putin granting temporary political asylum to Snowden, we might not have learned as much as we have about the massive surveillance network operated by NSA and its over 45 partners around the globe.

Gary Oldman Controversy: ADL Slams Actor’s ‘Irresponsible’ and ‘Anti-Semitic’ Remarks

“Gary Oldman’s remarks irresponsibly feed into a classic anti-Semitic canard about supposed Jewish control of Hollywood and the film industry,” said Abraham H. Foxman, national director of the ADL. “He should know better than to repeat and give credence to tired anti-Semitic tropes. Mel Gibson’s ostracization in Hollywood was not a matter of being ‘politically incorrect,’ as Mr. Oldman suggests, but of paying the consequences for outing himself as a bigot and a hater. It is disturbing that Mr. Oldman appears to have bought into Mr. Gibson’s warped and prejudiced world view.”

A 2013 ADL poll revealed that 24 percent of all Americans believe that “the movie and television industries are pretty much run by Jews,” contributing to the stereotype.

Oldman has yet to respond to the backlash to his remarks.

re: #407 Justanotherhuman

Those are all wire reports of what I’ve been posting from The Record and Star Ledger and other local papers for the past couple of weeks. Christie got the Port Authority to shift funds originally meant for the ARC tunnel to go to rebuild the Pulaski Skyway. It’s a worthy and needed project, but NJ didn’t want to raise its own taxes or fees to cover it. They got the Port Authority to issue a ruling that the Skyway was an access road to the Lincoln Tunnel, which would be a valid use of Port Authority funds. But the reality is that it’s a stretch to call it a Lincoln Tunnel access road since it directly leads to the Holland.

This has consequences for the bond offerings by the Port Authority since it would be a material misrepresentation of what the bond offerings were for.

Now, a complicating factor is that the Port Authority doesn’t answer to Christie alone. It’s a bistate agency and Gov. Cuomo would ordinarily need to sign off on the deal through his representatives on the Board.

Bridgegate showed how the system inside the Port Authority is completely broken down and how NY’s reps on the authority were outside the loop for the GWB lane closures. Is it possible they’re outside the loop on the Skyway funding deal?

I consider that possible but highly implausible because all the major news outlets reported on how Port Authority funds were going to be reallocated to do the Pulaski project. That would seemingly implicate Cuomo as well.

How wouldn’t it implicate Cuomo? If the NJ cronies were the ones who ginned up the legal authority to shift the funds, ignoring other counsel, then they might be able to isolate the culpability for the deal to Christie and his allies inside the Port Authority.

Same here. I was thinking earlier that as a society we seem to crave the snake oil—the fast/easy/cheap cure, the Jerry Springer outrageous outrages & clickbait headlines, always sort of skimming the info… never looking at anything too deeply as that requires more than a 24-hour attention span. Now that everything including the news media is basically corporate-owned, financial profitability seems to be the driving factor for, well, for everything.

Example: Yesterday I got a call from a doctor, a specialist, that I last saw over a year ago. The doctor himself was okay, but I didn’t like the practice—it felt like a factory, very…. I can’t find the word I’m looking for. Anyway, I got an automated call from his office today saying, “We haven’t seen you in over a year, and we’re concerned about your health….” Really? You’re so concerned that you had that goddamned automated system call me and talk to me in a computer-effing-generated voice? You’re billing what, several hundred dollars an hour? And you can’t pay someone to pick up the phone?? Screw that. I’m not going back there.

Man who allegedly killed goat in front of co-workers charged with felony

According to the complaint:

A manager at Kipp told police that Pardee had been bringing the goat to work for a while, but on Friday he had locked his keys in his car and could not put the goat inside. He said Pardee put the goat into some crates but it escaped and was caught by another employee.

Told that he could not keep the goat in the building, Pardee took the goat from the employee, raised it above his head and smashed the goat to the ground.

Pardee admitted to Officer Ryahn Smith that he killed the goat by striking its head on a curb. Then he put the goat under his car so that he could give it “a proper funeral.”

Speaking of unions, Walkers administration shows his contempt for prison guards.

State prison guards demand 1% raise they say is overdue

Union guards in Wisconsin prisons shouldn’t have to wait any longer to get the 1% raise given to all other state workers a year ago, a labor leader argues in a letter to Gov. Scott Walker.

In the letter sent this week to Walker, Marty Beil, a frequent critic of the GOP governor and head of the Wisconsin State Employees Union, called on Walker to approve for corrections officers the raise that most other state employees received on June 29, 2013.

“You have often said that you value state employees and the jobs that they do. Here is an opportunity to back the words with action,” Beil wrote in a letter to Walker.

Prison wardens get hefty pay raises by switching posts

Six prison wardens locked in pay raises of 8% to 13% this week — bringing their pay to just under $100,000 a year — at a time when most correctional officers and other state employees are getting 1% pay raises.

The Department of Corrections was able to award the increases by moving wardens from one prison to another, because state rules allow larger wage increases for such job transfers. Some corrections officers derided the maneuver as a loophole, noting officers are often sent from one institution to another without seeing bumps in pay.

The raises included an 11% boost for Warden Michael Dittmann. An internal Department of Corrections investigation found evidence that Dittmann, about 10 years ago, used slurs against gays and threw refrigerated oranges at the groins of staff who disagreed with him.

Not to mention, Pittsburgh is a nice city still, nowhere near as much manufacturing, but more technology and medical businesses are located there, plus several universities.

There is much wailing and gnashing of teeth in freeperland. They seem broken hearted that THEIR RWNJ isn’t going to replace the Establishent RWNJ.

If unions were the villain, then Birmingham AL would still be pouring steel.

Slight bit of good news from South Carolina. Sally Atwater (the charming widow of charming Lee) is losing her runoff for the R candidate for State School Superintendent. (Yes, there’s a Democrat running, but…)

Her opponent in the R runoff is functionally a Democrat (that’s really all the Club for Growth folks could say against her), so there’s that.

No, I disagree. Dr. Carson is by objective standards a smart, intelligent man. The problem is, time and time again we witness the fact that blind ideology triumphs over intelligence.

The promise of Utopia so permeates the right wing/Libertarian fantasy world that otherwise intelligent people make asinine and stupid decisions and hold onto demonstrably false assumptions. Dr. Carson is just the latest example of ideology over Science and real world facts. His is a very human condition, and one where my outlook towards the future for much of this country is in serious doubt.

re: #38 Bulworth

a lot of their frustration comes from the fact they cannot return to a prior era because they never really existed in the first place. They hold a lot of fantasy, filtered recollections, and myth as sacred. Empirical evidence, real world current events, and real history are pushed far down on their list of priorities.

This man is Presidential material!

He’d give Jon Stewart and Steven Colbert plenty of material.

I’m not sure, but hasn’t the percentage of Americans that are actually in Unions been steadily decreasing for awhile? If that’s true, it hardly backs up the claim that unions are the cause of our economic woes today as people like this claim.
