NSA Responds to FOIA Request: No Record of Snowden Challenging Spying

Not a whistleblower
US News • Views: 28,493

NSA leaker Edward Snowden has been claiming for months that he sent numerous emails to NSA officials and the Office of General Counsel, trying to “blow the whistle” on illegal practices before stealing as much information as possible and fleeing the country.

But a month ago, the NSA released the only email they had discovered from Snowden, and it had nothing to do with reporting wrongdoing or abuse; it was a mundane question about a training course.

This point is no small matter; Snowden’s claim to be a whistleblower hinges on it. If he made no attempt to go through legal channels before his massive theft of secret documents, he can’t claim to be a whistleblower.

And yesterday, in response to an FOIA request from one of Snowden’s biggest boosters, Truthout’s Jason Leopold, the NSA says they’ve conducted a thorough search of their files — and turned up no abuse reports at all from Snowden.

The National Security Agency says it has not been able to find a single recorded case where former contractor Edward Snowen raised complaints about the agency’s operations.

The claim, revealed in response to a Freedom of Information Act request from investigative reporter Jason Leopold, undercuts Snowden’s claim that he raised concerns with his superiors before leaking top-secret spy agency documents to the press.

A thorough search of our files was conducted, but there are no documents indicating that Mr. Snowden contacted agency officials to raise concerns about NSA programs,” the agency said in a response to the journalist.

No doubt, Snowden and his public relations flack Glenn Greenwald will now say the NSA is lying and hiding these emails. But if he really did make these complaints as he claims, wouldn’t he have kept copies? How could anyone in that position not retain their own copies of these complaints, knowing that it would be a major issue of credibility?

Yet, Snowden has not released any such copies, even though he could destroy the NSA’s claims and vindicate himself by doing so. This simply doesn’t pass even a rudimentary smell test, folks.

“You’d lie about them, of course.”

Well of course the NSA is going to say that.

If only they had had a man on the inside who could have smuggled out the documentation proving Snowden had brought it up.

Hey now, Snowden is a master hacker. Surely he’s got copies of the emails, it’s just that they’re so encrypted that even he can’t access them.

You can bet if I had been scheming to steal top secret US security docs, and was going to make a claim about telling someone at the NSA about it, I sure as hell would have documented it.

Anyone who makes a claim against an employer for any reason whatsoever is told by their attorney (and anyone with a brain, really) to always document everything possible by paper copies, recordings, computer records or whatever. It’s never about s/he said/s/he said. Ever. And no experienced lawyer would ever take a case that didn’t have some forms of documentation.

Snowden had a lousy lawyer in Greenwald if he didn’t do that.

Therefore, why should anyone believe him just because he and Greenwald claim it?

This is probably irrelevant, but sometimes when you give a whistle to a little kid who hasn’t used one before, they suck on it.

Maybe Snowden is a whistle-sucker?

Some kind of sucker, anyway.

That’s what bothered me from the very get-go on this. I’ve never been in a whistle-blower situation, but have had times where due to a conflict, clash of personalities, variance on how certain tasks were to be performed, I made sure that I had kept copies of all the documentation on the issue, just in case.

Of course, to the true believer, lack of evidence is the proof.

To a conspiracy theorist, a lack of evidence is evidence in itself. After all, if the government had the emails, would it just release them? “Of course not,” says the CTer, “because that would prove their crime. They’d do everything they could to deny it exists!”

The dudebros have plenty of excuses for why he fled the country to China with US gov’t secrets, all of which rely upon their own conspiracy theories about how the government is secretly “disappearing” or “assassinating” people who try to reveal the government’s secrets.

Email. How does it work. Send email to someone, and it will generate a copy of the email request (that will generally appear in your sent email folder).

You’d think that something this important would be protected by Snowden at all costs since it goes to the heart of his whistleblower claims.

But that there’s no evidence he ever sent any email questioning the NSA activities as being illegal tells you that this is a retcon of his actual intent - to steal classified data from the NSA and abscond with it to a foreign country.

That’s not the mark of a whistleblower, but someone engaging in espionage.

So, for all Greenwald’s bloviation and dudebrosplain’, Snowden committed crimes, and he remains answerable for them - and he’s no hero for exposing NSA programs that have nothing to do with violations of US civil rights.

33 Islamo-Masonic Conspirator  Jun 26, 2014 12:57:04pm

So it’s Snowden’s claim without any evidence to back it up vs. an official reply backed up by the fact that the people who issued it could potentially suffer severe legal consequences if they lie replying to a FOIA request. As things stand now, the choice is clear.

Greenwald to Snowden before Snowden committed his crimes: Don’t worry, I’m a seasoned lawyer and I know how to obfuscate; we’ll cook this up as whistle blowing and tell the world they’re being spied upon and how mean and evil the US is and beat the drums about people’s civil rights. So, go ahead and steal everything you can get your hands on. Afterwards, we’ll have a big announcement in Hong Kong, a neutral setting, and you can escape the country and vacation in some South American country like I do as the money rolls in while we just release a few things here and there.

One more thing. If one alleges a conspiracy, one also has to deal with the fact that the officials know that Snowden can provide the emails, in which case lying would be counterproductive.

It’s kind of amazing to me that, after more than a year with nothing better to do, Snowjob didn’t just create some plausible fake emails. The NSA couldn’t condemn the lies any more strongly than they already have, and I’m sure legions of folks with dudebro sympathies would lap them up like a cat on milk.

Speaks once more to his general lack of, I dunno, smart-osity.

This is a real puzzle. I suspect the sticking point is that Snowden was so aggressively uninterested in following internal procedures that he had and has no idea at all what internal NSA email address is used for this purpose.

Hopefully the NSA has been intelligent enough to change this address since Snowden left.

WIngnut welfare is as real a job as anything else in our twisted system.

Regarding Coulter on soccer, it would be amusing if she were obliged to (attempt to) keep goal in a soccer game at the world cup level.

That would solve so many of her issues with soccer all at once (low scoring, lack of injuries, etc.) in a way I’d also find greatly entertaining.

I’m not as up on logical fallacies as most people who call themselves skeptics seem to be, but this exemplifies one that I come across frequently and which, if it doesn’t have a formal name, should. It’s the tendency to take a characteristic which is the average for a group and to assume that it is shared by every member of the group and, at it’s most extreme, is in fact an inherent, or perhaps even defining, characteristic. 40% of “strong liberals”, a category uniquely used by this particular poll it should be noted, often feel proud to be American. That is a minority, but it should be noted it’s a large minority.

Also, several of the other groups had numbers that were only in 50 - 60 % range.

Better than a large part of my human family in fact. It’s true that the hairy varmint kin are known to screech, throw feces, and masturbate in public but the human relatives do that too; as well as lie, cheat, steal, and belong to fundamentalist churches.

She told police that she was seeking a second opinion from a “natural” doctor, whose practice, she said, is “religious-based.”

Why am I not surprised?

When a police officer asked Markham if she had confirmed with a doctor that the Whole Foods formula was safe for her baby, she replied that she didn’t need to. Whole Foods wouldn’t sell it if it wasn’t organic or contained animal-derived ingredients, she said.

Reporting on Israel is admittedly difficult but you’d be hard pressed to pack more inaccuracies and omissions into the first 2 paragraphs
Palestinians Warn Israel That Crackdown on Hamas May Backfire

Shortly after three Israeli teenagers disappeared in the West Bank late on June 12, the effort to locate them shifted from a search to a broader campaign aimed at punishing Hamas.

Israeli officials say the militant Palestinian faction is responsible for the abductions of Gilad Shaar, Eyal Yifrach and Naftali Fraenkel, but no one pretends the thousands of Israeli soldiers who swarmed the West Bank for the last two weeks as part of “Operation Brothers’ Keeper” were only looking for them. The troops also swept up 371 activists and politicians, shut down 64 social welfare operations maintained by Hamas and, along the way, made every effort to thwart the only weeks-old unity pact bringing together Hamas and the more secular, peace-oriented Fatah faction.

I was reading some history of 17th-18th century London. The grocer was regarded as a cultural icon of dishonesty. They used to put all kinds of toxic dies on food to make it appear fresh, Sawdust was a common ingredient in bread, all kinds of nasty stuff. Laws have improved but the libertarian fantasy of businesses looking out for their customers just isn’t a factor in human nature.

re: #259 Lidane

Vegetarian is not the same as Vegan. Most of my family are vegetarians. Also, developing children have different nutritional needs than adults.

But in general, I don’t like it when people force their ideologies on their children. That includes parents I know who get upset when their children express ideas a little more conservative than they hold or religious ideas, including people who want to raise their kids as atheists. A person’s children are not their possessions.

It’s very, very difficult to be a healthy vegan. Personally, I don’t have the wherewithal to do it myself. Vegetarianism, by contrast, is much easier. People have killed their kids trying this and it’s something they should be aware of. But a lot of people just seem to have this notion that veganism = healthy, without any real subtleties beyond that. The media reinforces this.

I usually humor the dietary idiosyncrasies of my friends and family. In return, they usually humor mine. Adults have a right to do whatever they want with their own bodies. It’s just when kids are involved it becomes something else.
