It is kind of amazing how much Matt Drudge has a say in US society. He’s been pimping the worst border stories for a month now. He bragged about it on a radio interview (an extremely rare engagement with the media) recently.

35 Eclectic Cyborg  Jun 30, 2014 9:21:19pm

Gone, but never forgotten

It’s been a difficult week in Cyborg land.

In the past seven days we’ve had to say goodbye to not one, but two of our beloved furry friends.

If you can believe it, we lost our Feline overlord Callie last Tuesday and then, two days later our beloved Basset Hound Molly.

Callie was only 4 and My wife and I had to make the extremely difficult decision to let her go because we could not afford the nearly $1000 for a treatment plan. I believe and always will believe that had we been able to, she would have pulled through. This was cat was tough. Quirky, annoying sometimes, impossibly affectionate at others, but always tough.

Molly was not unexpected, she was 10. Older age for a Basset and her health had declined in recent years. Still, two in three days is a lot for the heart to bear.

I haven’t really had time to process it yet I have been so busy with work and housework and church obligations and who knows what else. But at this time of night, with the house so quiet, I can’t help but notice.

At least we have one left. A relatively healthy two and half year old little yapper named Riley. I sincerely hope he’ll be around awhile.

On top of everything else, on the day we lost callie, the alternator in my car also decided to call it quits. Auto Zone quoted me $230 for a replacement but I managed to find a used one for $40 at a local parts place and a mechanic neighbor was nice enough to install it for me.

So at least one good thing happened last week.

I want to find a way to acknowledge the Lizards who actually live by what Jesus taught versus the modern day American Christian TM because they don’t deserve to be lumped in like that.

Of course, my solution to this was to leave the religion, so it’s not like I have great ideas.

I was raised by those sort of people, and my siblings and their families are that kind of Christian, so I get really offended when some bigoted asshole who fetishizes birth but can’t be bothered with the born claims Christianity as the sole province of his sort of narrowmindedness. My brother, for all that he’s an insufferably pompous git, and his wife put themselves in harms way for their beliefs, and those beliefs seem to me to be more in line with Christ’s teaching than those I hear from people who piss and moan about Christians being persecuted.

There was a point in my life where I was very Christian. I have a Bible full of underlining from that time period, given to me by a friend who remains very dear to my heart.

Even then, I could not reconcile the notion of a loving God with that of one who could give his creations free will and then consign them to eternal damnation if they didn’t follow his word precisely. I had my ways around thinking about that (mostly involving decidedly non-Christian concepts) but …I can’t pretend I was ever comfortable with that.

I was especially not comfortable with people who evangelized constantly. If your life isn’t a good example of why someone would want to be a Christian, you’re doing it wrong.

You’ll appreciate this quote from George Fox, who founded the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers).

“Be patterns, be examples in all countries, places, islands, nations wherever you come; that your carriage and life may preach among all sorts of people, and to them; then you will come to walk cheerfully over the world, answering that of God in everyone; whereby in them you may be a blessing, and make the witness of God in them to bless you.”

I grew up in a relatively liberal environment in a suburb of New York and most of the Christians I know are of that ilk. I, usually, try to note when I’m talking about far right wing politically motivated Christians, although sometimes I forget. It would be easier if there were simpler words. Many people use “evangelical”, but that’s not right either.

GG clearly has no experience with deadline journalism. No matter what “revelations” the government may have, if you’ve got a story ready to run, you publish it before anyone else can. Then if the new info requires a follow-up, you write a follow-up.

I thought the new editor guy from the Rocky Mtn News was supposed to shape these people up. Apparently, he’s not succeeded yet.

February (month 1) - 16
March - 21
April - 4
May - 7
June - 4
Total to date: 52, more than half of which were published in the first 2 months

For the sake of comparison, in that same time, my own blog (a one-man operation) published 31 articles.

Heh. Was driving around this weekend and saw a car driving that wasn’t nearly in as bad shape, but the entire rear end was being held together with duct tape. Nearly the entire trunk deck was taped over to keep the rear fender from falling off.

The front and sides were little better, and the driver had an annoying habit of straying from their own lane too. So I gave it a very wide berth.

It’s why I say God is an existentialist. He doesn’t care what a person believes. He cares about how they act.

I prefer to hammer them and SCOTUS on the blatant sexism.

Health insurance is a standard part of any compensation package offered by an employer to an employee. Those employees pay premiums AND co-pays to have that coverage. Women pay for those premiums through their labor for that employer, since the premiums are deducted from their paycheck. This Hobby Lobby horseshit not only grants religious rights to a corporation, but it says that the corporation’s rights trump the rights of their female employees, since only women would be affected by birth control coverage being denied.

I can’t understand how this ruling doesn’t shred the corporate veil. They’re blurring the line between the owners of the corporation and the corporation. WTF.

re: #210 sattv4u2

huh?

They upgraded the tropical storm forming to a hurricane? Last I heard it was going to only hit the Florida coast. If it’s going further north (and being upgraded to a hurricane) maybe I WON’T head to the beach later today/ very early tomorrow (South Carolina) as planned

Has the potential to develop into a Cat 1.

“People heading to the beaches on the Atlantic coast from Florida to southern New England can expect a couple of days on average of rough weather and surf.

(snip)

“From parts of eastern North Carolina to southeastern Virginia, Delmarva, New Jersey, Long Island and on Cape Cod, there is the potential for coastal flooding at times of high tide within 12 hours of the center of the system passing by, even if the center was to stay offshore. As the system is passing this part of the coastline, it could be a hurricane.

“The system, which is forecast to attain tropical storm status and could become a hurricane, will hug the coast and could even make landfall in North Carolina before turning out to the Northeast late in the week,” Kottlowski said.”

I just wonder how long before Omidyar realizes who he’s dealing with and reneges on the deal?

Of course, it will be a very expensive lesson since Greenwald would probably sue him for breach of contract.

Even billionaires can be fooled by a consummate con man.

Nah. Let the hiring contract run, but pull all the funding for the website, offices, and other infrastructure. Some rightwing sites have gotten all excited about an audiotape allegedly of an associate pastor of an African-American church in Mississippi claiming he worked with the Cochran campaign on a vote buying scheme. Obviously stuff like this coming from the Right isn’t credible, but it will be interesting to see if there is anything to it. If there is, it could give Travis Childers (D) a chance to win the Mississippi Senate race.

That was one sweet aircraft. Best close air support aircraft of the war.

It got that role due to the performance at altitude not being that good. Roughly the same frame got a different engine and had the desired performance (Tempest). UK at that time was looking for something to replace the Spitfire since they were running up against the performance limits of that airframe.

I posted a picture earlier of a Sea Fury. That was the last prop-driven RN fighter. And like a bunch of other good prop-driven aircraft (Bearcat, Tigercat, etc.) it had a relatively short lifespan in active service before being replaced by jets.

Indeed, not to mention plenty of it. The Nazis were actually pushing engines to their very limits, but were still hampered by low-octane fuel. And the Japanese were stuck trying to build bigger and bigger engines for not much increase in performance. Not to say they didn’t both make some major strides, but that had more to do with aerodynamics than engine power.

So, this morning NRO decided to complain that we are spending too much on infrastructure.

Oh, and that Obama might call for more infrastructure spending to create jobs. As if that’s a bad thing.

Let’s dig into this a bit more, shall we?

America has a sprawling infrastructure, a significant portion of which was built in the 1950s as part of the Interstate Highway System. Many components of that system have are now functionally obsolete or have run up against their design lives. So, they require replacement, rehabilitation, and significant expenditures to keep them from collapsing.

A functional infrastructure improves economic vitality of regions, speeds goods to markets, and can have significant economic benefits far beyond just the jobs created for those projects.

But maintaining what we already have is just a part of the infrastructure picture. We need to build more rail capacity in certain parts of the country to handle higher populations. Some of those projects are expensive. The 2d Avenue Subway by itself is a multibillion dollar project that would move nearly 200,000 people a day for just the phase 1 portion. Now imagine how the full line would operate (from 125th street to Hanover Square); it would move more than 500,000 a day. Phase 1 costs over $4 billion.

That’s just one part of the region’s infrastructure projects.

There’s the scandal-ridden Pulaski Skyway project that was funded by the Port Authority, which will cost more than $1 billion.

The cancelled ARC tunnel was a $8 billion funded project (though overruns would probably have pushed it north of $10 billion) - all to move hundreds of thousands of people daily.

East Side Access is another multibillion dollar project, which wont be finished for another decade.

Those are just in NYC.

There are major highway projects across the nation, HSR in California, road and bridge projects that need to replace aging bridges and structures.

Heck, the backlog on Amtrak alone is over $100 billion for the NEC alone. That would eliminate bottlenecks in places like NYC, Baltimore, New Jersey, speed limitations throughout, and improve service nationally.

Likewise, infrastructure includes airport improvements - billions need (and are) being spent on airport improvements that passengers see like terminals, but billions more are needed to upgrade ATC systems to make a safer, more reliable, and more accurate system (which would also make it cheaper for airlines that could route planes more directly to save them fuel costs and reduce time in the airports waiting to land or takeoff, etc.)

Then, there’s the forgotten infrastructure - electric, sewer, and water distribution. Again, billions need to be spent to upgrade water purification, distribution, and treatment nationally.

NRO, and Geraghty argue that this is overblown? Seriously?

But we’re supposed to take the Keystone jobs claims on their face as being the key to creating jobs nationally?

What a bunch of hooey.

287 FemNaziBitch  Jul 1, 2014 7:43:39am

Anyone interested in learning the history and importance of infrastructure might want to check-out this book: Roads to Power, Britain Invents the Infrastructure State by Jo Guldi.

I attended the author talk a while back and it wasn’t nearly as boring as I first thought it would be. I learned quite a bit.

A few employees of the various road and bridge departements in my State were also in attendance.

Quite boring Q & A session as a result.

Hopefully that map is right and it misses Columbus. And I hope for the same for you too Sleuth, as well as other LGF members in the target area. We sure do not need more rain right now around here. The lakes and rivers are higher than they’ve been this time of the year and they are having trouble with flood control as they can’t draw down the reservoirs due to the rivers already at max.

And it is so humid today. Supposed to make it to 91° today with the cold front right behind it…thus the storms.

Once again, I’m right in the middle of that map mess.
We also have a heat advisory until 8 pm (heat index 101F).
sigh.

I did much the same, re-watched Star Treks 2 and 3, then found a really bad Band of Brothers/Private Ryan rehash (starring some of the same actors) that was so far-fetched and poorly done that even I (a big fan of anything with tanks in it) fave up watching.

Was that the one with Ted Sizemore where the group of soldiers got “ambushed” about ten minutes in by one German MG and one mortar?

“Band of Heroes” or something like that? If it was I turned it off right after they took out the mortar team. I was surprised the soldiers could run that well while being so loaded down with cliches.

No, they want someone else to pay for their construction, maintenance, and ongoing functionality. But then complain when they’re called on to pay for it via use taxes (tolls, motor fuel taxes, etc.) or from general funds (revenues from income taxes).

It’s not just infrastructure; in NJ, Gov. Christie approved the budget, which is marginally smaller than his prior budgets, but that’s because he slashed the pension payment he was obligated to pay (and a court allowed him to do so, even though the legislature found a way to do it with a combination of higher taxes/fees to make the full payment possible, saving the state a bundle over the long term in lower carrying costs). He’ll cry poverty, even though the state could raise the gas tax to fund transit projects, which would improve the road and rail conditions statewide - generating new economic development through jobs created and money spent by those folks.

And his so-called economic development policies have generated less economic growth than New York or PA, which arguably have even higher tax burdens. Spending by the state plays a role in that. NJ simply isn’t spending on the long term, and it’s barely scraping together enough for current obligations.

China’s got its own set of problems, whether it’s shoddy construction or no protections for landowners against government takings, or building on speculation and you’ve got entire ghost cities because no one is living there (an attempt at induced demand).

The Chinese government is at least interested in building infrastructure. And they’re considering ways to reduce pollution (moving factories out of urban areas is one method, but shifting to less polluting methods and energy sources is another).

The GOP isn’t - and so the federal transit/highway budget is once again hanging in the balance.

The fact of the matter is Women are not considered human beings in our society. Period.

Third, police departments continue to ignore rapes of women thought of as “fringe,” including prostitutes, runaways, trans women, drug addicts and people considered transient. Women of color in particular face difficulties. For example, for years, women repeatedly went to the police in Cleveland to report that Anthony Sowell had raped, beaten or otherwise violently assaulted them at his house. Little was done until 2009, when police finally found eleven decomposing bodies of women there.

You bet, it’s Paged READ THE WHOLE THING.

The new Indian government is looking to overhaul the employment laws and that’s expected to cause quite a bit of upheaval too - many have been in place since independence. The new government thinks that revising the laws will encourage companies to grow, increase women’s participation, etc.

But there’s a huge number of people still living in crushing poverty and infrastructure is still a huge concern for much of India.

While many foreign companies have set up in places like Bangalore and Hydrabad, they also build their own power generators because of regular power outages.

Potable water is another major concern, as is sea level rise, which will affect neighboring Bangladesh and Pakistan even more (with Bangladesh mostly just a few feet above sea level, such that any significant storm surge can have devastating consequences even without the sea level rise due to global warming).

Speaking of potable water, the source for much of the region’s water is also under fire from global warming as the snowpack in the Himalayas isn’t what it has been, meaning that there’s less water to go around.

No, I don’t think this is a numbers crunching thing. It’s a belief in the crime thing. We have a systemic problem with this and crimes against women. One just has to look at the GOP response to allowing abortions for rape victims.

Legitimate Rape being the most memorable. Many still think a married woman cannot be raped by her husband or a Sex Worker cannot be raped by her John.

Any women having sex outside of marriage is fair game to some and that includes members of Law Enforcement. They simply did not believe a crime was committed and therefore did not report it as such.

He says ‘we spend $52b a year and people still complain.’ The assumption is that $52b is a lot, even enough. It’s just a number though, with no real context.

$52b could be way more than enough, or far short of enough, or just the right amount. He doesn’t f’ing know, he just makes an assumption based on nothing more than the size of the number that it’s big enough.

When they were slut shaming Sandra Fluke, it was being reported that she could get $9 a month BC at the Target store in Georgetown.

So this tech support request just came in:

thank you for the help the other day.
so i called panasonic he suggested loading firefox and try, no luck. also to type the password in notepad then copy and paste it in the field, again no luck.
so i removed ids and low and behold it works.
the black x still iluminates over the go button, but online banking is available.
so the concern goes back to what is it with the ids software that causes this.
is r**** the i-t guy still down there ? could i call him or he call me or ?
my cell number is in this thread with numbers and words, please call if needed.
thanks again.

So this tech support request just came in:

If anyone ever wondered why the Tech Support From Hell meme exists also understand that the reverse is true and that Tech Support gets stuff that goes beyond making you scratch your head about what they are actually requesting. (Or that they require you to have ESP to know exactly what they want based on a very nebulous single sentence.)

There is also the infamous SUT (Stupid User Trick). Which is the wild goose chase request you spend at least 30 minutes on and trace back to a non-issue or the user making a mistake about the request in the first place.

re: #343 Ryan King

$52 billion doesn’t go nearly as far when you realize there are 4.09 million miles of road in the United States, according to the Federal Highway Administration, including Alaska and Hawaii.

That includes 47,432 miles of Interstate Highways, which comprise just over one percent of highway mileage but carry one-quarter of all highway traffic. The Interstates plus another 175,514 miles of major roads comprise the National Highway System, which carries most of the highway freight and traffic in the U.S.

Source.

$52 billion into 4.09 million miles of road comes out to spending about $12,000 per mile. Mind you that’s if you looked at mileage alone (other factors like lane miles drill down even further). But that isn’t where/how the money is spent. It’s concentrated on items like bridge replacement (which can run into the millions for a single bridge overpass on an interstate, or billions for a road expansion like the Turnpike expansion, or a major highway interchange improvement or a bridge upgrade like the Bayonne Bridge navigation clearance project or Goethals bridge replacement).

And that $52 billion is for roads and rails - and a single rail project could be $1b or more - like the Portal Bridge that would more than double capacity through the Meadowlands at speed.

But the GOP tends to refuse to fund those kinds of projects since they tend to land in states where there’s lots of people, urban areas, etc., which don’t favor the GOP unless they get something in return.

I once read up on how whiskey and bourbon are made. One reason to age the liquor in charred oak barrels is to remove the methanol and other toxic substances left after distillation. The charcoal “purifies” the liquor as well as imparts flavor to the liquid.

Moonshine, meanwhile, may not go through any purification and certainly not aging (Aged in the bottle two days!). so drinking it may be somewhat risky.

You will find those numbers buried in footnote No. 23 of Alito’s opinion. Of far more importance to him is 1) creating a new category of workers called “partial-public employees” who don’t have to pay union fees if they don’t want to and 2) attacking what he calls the “questionable foundations” of Abood and the whole idea of allowing unions to collect mandatory dues from any employees—public, partial-public, or private. The first part is bad for the home health aides in Illinois and the people for whom they care. If people can opt out of paying their union dues, that weakens the union, which eventually means worse terms of employment, which translates to worse service for patients. The second part of Alito’s opinion doesn’t really matter for today’s outcome, but it bodes ill for the next challenge to the way unions are funded, which surely a right-to-work, anti-union lawyer is already mounting.

Geraghty makes the same error of ignorance that happens often with climate deniers: spout a big number and, well, it’s real big, so, let’s make an assumption about that number based solely on it’s value.

IF the US wins today they’ll have a VERY rough go against either Argentina or the Swiss. I would rather see the Swiss win (for the US’s chances) but then again, any chance to watch the virtuosity of Messi, even if it’s against the US is Must See

But the “win” for the US was getting into the round of 16. Everything beyond that point is gravy in terms of expectations.

Here’s a sanity break.

Even though it’s in Czech, and folks likely won’t understand it, this is an episode from a series called Pripady 1. Oddeleni, or “Case #1 Department”. In real life, those guys are the homicide squad of the Federal Police that work on the really difficult cases.

You can watch it without understanding the language; it’s fairly straightforward. Notice the actors they use; they’re very ordinary looking people, thus enhancing the realism of the series.

Might not be safe for work, and there are, in some episodes, occasionally graphic violence. This particular episode is based on a true story; a rag-and-bone man in Prague found the torso of a dismembered woman while rooting through the dumpsters one day, and the rest of her was found nearby in other trash receptacles. The Czech Republic is generally not a violent place - murder is not a frequent occurrence here, but it does happen of course, as it does everywhere. But this case stood out for many because of the grisly nature of the crime.

The pathetic hilarious thing about the reactions to RBG’s dissent as being some sort of “tool of satan” is that she spends barely any time at all arguing the moral merits of the decision. She doesn’t go into great detail on why it takes a miserable piece of shit to want to deny women an essential part of their healthcare. She instead goes at it from the purely logical standpoint of the decision being terrible jurisprudence. About how it’s inherently contradictory to established law and precedent, about how it clearly favors one religion over another (Alito making exceptions for transfusions and vaccines, etc.), and how the decision opens up the door to all kinds of retarded challenges to law on religious grounds no matter what bullshit weaksauce excuses Alito tries to throw out there.

Ottawa born here. I know that area well.

I remember when I was a kid and the exchange rate was so crazy we could actually save a bit of money by driving to Rochester NY and do our shopping there.

Massena is still surviving partially based on that*. Lots of Canadians still crossing over to do shopping there.

* - Massena used to be a major industrial center for a small town. ALCOA smelter operation (still open I think), Reynolds Metals smelter operation (closed?), and GM had a parts plant next to Reynolds (closed). The last two came in after the St Lawrence Seaway construction included a hydroelectric dam there for cheap electricity.** So the place, and St Lawrence County in general is still hurting from the recession.

ALCOA was in the area from even before the Seaway. They built their initial operations in that area back in the 1910s - and dug a canal from a tributary river (Grasse) to the St Lawrence in order to generate electricity for their initial smelting operations. This plant was also a sabotage target of German agents in WW2 due to it being one of the major aluminum production spots in the US.

** - Robert Moses is not considered an evil name in that area. He brought a lot of economic growth to the area via the Seaway projects.

Another theory. Andy Beshear is running for AG and half of Ky Democrats still oppose ssm. By keeping the litigation going, Andy gets to straddle the fence by saying he can’t take a position now because he might have to issue an AG’s opinion on it after he takes office if he wins.

I also see from the Wiki page on the Typhoon that they had the black/white stripes painted on them previous to D-Day. Apparently the Typhoon bore a resemblance in shape to the FW-190 and there were some friendly fire incidents.

For me, I only had to a one-time psychological test thing online and monthly blood tests (liver or kidneys I think, can’t remember which) and the doctor did the standard “Are you going to crazy? Any thoughts of suicide?” questions every month.

I think I was on it for six months and by the end, I was on the mass dosage (two pills twice a day).

It’s tied to employment, in part, because there are tax benefits to the employers for providing the benefit, which is part of your overall compensation for working.

Sounds like someone needs a history lesson in how and why it was done this way.

Oh, and that the US determined health insurance was a need way back in 1789, when it established the Marine Hospital Service. The service as funded by compulsory contributions from seamen’s wages.

Another history DIY-er.

DIY is probably giving too much credit, probably just reading wikipedia:

“Employer-sponsored health insurance plans dramatically expanded as a direct result of wage controls imposed by the federal government during World War II.[21] The labor market was tight because of the increased demand for goods and decreased supply of workers during the war. Federally imposed wage and price controls prohibited manufacturers and other employers from raising wages enough to attract workers. When the War Labor Board declared that fringe benefits, such as sick leave and health insurance, did not count as wages for the purpose of wage controls, employers responded with significantly increased offers of fringe benefits, especially health care coverage, to attract workers.[21]”

Sarah Jaffe:
Why Harris and Hobby Lobby Spell Disaster for Working Women

…Both 5-4 decisions were written by Justice Samuel Alito, a conservative Catholic from New Jersey appointed by George W. Bush, and both rested on narrowly tailored legal arguments that just happen to cut wide enough to impact groups of workers who are almost exclusively female.

…………

…The conservatives pushing both of these cases would have you believe that these are cases about freedom — the freedom to avoid a union, the freedom to practice religion. And yet what they wind up being about is reducing power on the job for thousands of people — mostly women, mostly low-paid workers — across the country.

I have a question about marriage equality bumber stickers…

I have the standard one from HRC with the blue background and the yellow bars in the middle.

However, I sometimes see another sticker that is just three horizontal bars. Often the top and bottom bars are black so that on darker cars only the middle bar shows up. I was wondering if anyone else had seen these and if they are (1) just another version of the marriage equality sticker (2) some kind of anti-marriage equality message or (3) not related to marriage equality at all.

Unfortunately whenever I’ve seen these there haven’t been any other stickers on the car that would help interpret the message, if there is one.

Assuming you have a rooster. My brother’s flock is 10 hens (currently) and 0 rooster.

The interesting thing when he started and had upwards of 15-20 hens around and that one or two would start developing larger combs, and start crowing as well.* Essentially some behavioral/biology pressure for a chicken to start acting like a male in the absence of one. Once the flock dropped below twelve or so that particular behavior stopped.

* - Said behavior was *not* a positive survival trait in that flock. Since it was then a mix of meat and egg chickens those that started crowing met the chopping block first.
